HHS Volleyball Earns The State Title KAYE WEBER Champions. Winners. Victors. Number One. All of these words describe the 2016 Harrisburg Volleyball Team, who earned a state title on Saturday, November 19, by defeating the Roosevelt Rough Riders in a thrilling 5 set match.

The Tigers entered the AA State Tournament as the #1 seed, facing off against the Lincoln Patriots, the team that previously took down the Tigers in the first round of districts. Apparently, that loss lit a fire in the Tiger team, determined to seek redemption. They came out ready to play and took down the Patriots in a 3-0 win, with scores of 25-20, 25-17, 25-11. The well-rounded Tiger hitters slammed many kills to the ground; Samantha Slaughter had 14 kills, Madison Wassink had 12 kills, and Carlie Fikse had 10 kills.

Harrisburg - Better Than Ever MAYOR JULIE BURKE-VAN LUVANEE It has been another very productive year to put in the books! The city staff, city boards, volunteers and overall community has continued to make Harrisburg even better in 2016!

While we got a lot more boring stuff done (like paint a water tower, chip seal streets, snow removal, fight fires and patrol and fight crime to keep neighborhoods safe along with a long list of every day operations) I’d like to share what I believe are some of the top unbelievable things the community of Harrisburg accomplished in 2016!

10 – First City Proclamation for Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) Awareness Day 9 - Park Board hosted the 1st Annual (and very hands on) Arbor Day Celebration 8 - Community Library attendance increased over 15% during the year including a record number of participants in their Summer Reading Program!

7 – Welcoming new businesses: Carolan Rental, Lava’s Java’s, Meadow Barn, AutoCorrect and Forget me Not 6 – Statewide acknowledgment of some of our leadership in the Harrisburg School District: • Mr. Holbeck named 2016 State Superintendent of the year • Mr. Rollinger named 2016 Asst Principal of the Year • Dr. Lein named 2016 Principal of the Year 5 – Updated Zoning Regulations—first major update since 2010.

‘Tis The Season To Be Counting ADRIENNE MCKEOWN, PRESIDENT, HARRISBURG ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION AND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE This time of year, it seems like everyone is counting. Kids are counting the number of days until Christmas break and Santa’s arrival.

Parents are counting the number of shopping days left. And soon, we will all be counting down the final moments of 2016 and excitedly ushering in 2017 with all of its possibilities.

Winter Weather Advice When it is snowing, or snow is in the forecast, refrain from parking on city streets and alleys. Check our city website for snow alert notices. www. harrisburgsd.gov Expect snowplows to make unanticipated maneuvers such as backing up and making wide turns. The amber warning lights on snow removal equipment are there to alert motorists and remind them to yield the right of way.

Stay at least 70 feet (4 car lengths) back when you are following behind snowplows and other snow removal equipment so the maintenance vehicle driver can see you. Remember that snowplow drivers have limited vision from inside their vehicles.

Do not travel beside snowplows or other snow removal equipment. They can veer sideways very easily by force of the snow on the plow blade.

Be patient. City crews are working to make the streets safe for everyone!

Remove snow, ice from sidewalks, crosswalks and around fire hydrants on your property within 48 hours of snowfall.

DO NOT shovel or blow snow from sidewalks, crosswalks, driveways or parking lots onto public streets. It is a violation of City Ordinances.

Snow Removal Parking Ban The City of Harrisburg will declare a “Snow Alert” when an accumulation of 2” is either forecast for the city or should the city have no prior forecast warning, when the snow plows are dispatched. This could also include blowing or drifting snow that would require plowing.

All on-street parking shall be prohibited on both sides of the streets, regardless of the directional run of that street. Vehicles left on the street are subject to being ticketed and towed. Parking may resume after the snow alert has ended.

Harrisburg Community Library News SUZANNE ANDERSON Thank you to all who came to visit with Santa and share in the special storytime! The Community Library Book Club will be hosting a movie night in December. Please follow the book club Facebook group at Harrisburg Community Book Club for dates and movie choice (& like the library Facebook page too!). January’s Book Club book choice is “The Husband’s Secret” by Liane Moriarty. The book club will meet to discuss the book on Tuesday, January 31 at 6:30 in the conference room located by the library.

Make sure to stop in the library to check out the new books and movies. The DVD and Blue Ray selections are full of fun movies for the cold days. Due to the Christmas & New Years’ holiday the library will be closed December 2426 & December 31-2. The library will be open 9am-1pm December 27-30.

In the second round of the tournament, the Tigers took down the 2015 defending State Champs, the Aberdeen Central Golden Eagles in a 3-0 game, 25-23, 25-21, 25-21. Game highlights include the following: Slaughter’s 17 kills, 14 digs, and 4 blocks; Thorson’s 39 set assists; Wassink’s 10 kills; Fikse’s 7 kills; and Nelson’s 23 digs.

Up next, the Tigers approached the 2016 AA State Championship match against the Roosevelt

District Rough Riders. The two teams met mid-season in a heated 5 set match, where the Tigers clinched a close win. This time around, both teams fought for that state title and gave it all they had. After splitting the sets 2-2, the Tigers approached the fifth set ready to take care of business. According to the Argus Leader, Samantha Slaughter, “set a new career-high in kills. No. 37 tied the decisive fifth set at 9-9 and No. 39 clinched the state title for the Tigers, who rallied to beat the Rough Riders 3-2 (21-25, 25-12, 14-25, 25-13, 1510).” Slaughter finished the match with 39 kills, 3 aces, 14 digs, and 3 block assists. McKenna Mathiesen logged 4 kills, 5 digs, and 1 solo block. Teammate Madison Wassink finished with 10 kills and 22 digs, while Avery Thorson finished with 50 assists and 13 digs. Carlie Fikse added in 4 kills and 5 block assists, while Rachel Nelson contributed 7 digs and 5 aces. Both Slaughter and Thorson were also named to the AA All-Tournament Team.

By setting goals, working persistently, and never backing down, the Tiger Volleyball Team became the 2016 AA State Champions. It was a perfect ending to a successful season.

The booster club’s success relies on the numerous families in the district willing to join at membership levels ranging from $25 for faculty, $50 for families and up. Our April 19th Tiger Nation meeting will be the dollar distribution night for the extra curricular activities who request funds from the booster club. Dollars are divvied up on this evening based upon volunteer hours by students, faculty and parents for their designated extra curricular activity at our meetings and numerous fundraising events. Tiger Nation was honored to pass out over $30,000 in April 2016 and we would love to hand out more in 2017! National FFA Trip KAYLA SMEENK On October 18th, a group of intellectual FFA members left early in the morning to start their 14 hour journey to Indianapolis, Indiana, for the 89th National FFA Convention. Organizing and scheduling were the hardest parts of the trip, according to FFA Advisor Ms. Fastert. Since so many people went on the trip, it was a very costly experience for the chapter. The trip was possible by efforts made throughout the year

by FFA members and Harrisburg’s two advisors: Mr. Marks and Ms. Fastert. These efforts include participating in the chili feed, fruit sales, Old MacDonald’s Farm, and chain gang events. Although a great deal of money was made through these events, students who went on the THE TIGER TIMES • DECEMBER 2016 • PAGE 6

trip were still expected to pay a fee for travel and hotel costs which was definitely worth it. The Milk Quality team, Agronomy team, and an individual Creed Speaker competed at the convention. All competitors received an award that reflected on their hard work: Connor McAllister received an individual gold, Noah Hovorka and Chase Jensen both received individual silvers, Marianne Bishop got an individual bronze, and they received a team silver; Nolan Hoback, Brady Samuelson, Cassidy Rippentrop, and Reagan Yseth all received individual bronzes and a team bronze; Kayla Smeenk received an individual bronze. On the trip, students were able to go shopping, visit the career fair, attend lectures, and stop at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, also known as the Indy 500 Speedway. That long bus ride was definitely worth it with all of the memorable experiences that the students gained.

So Long To Soccer Season JACE POELSTRA

After this soccer season, Harrisburg High School says goodbye to two stellar members of their girl’s soccer team. The two seniors graduating, Cait Kelly and Alicia Aseltine, have left an impact and will continue impacting this team for years to come. These two seniors were representing the team in many ways throughout this season. The seniors represented the team through their determination, leadership, and fairness. Even though the soccer team didn’t have the greatest season, the seniors still encouraged everyone to try no matter the outcome. In an interview with senior captain Cait Kelly, she gave some insight into her favorite moments and memories from this season. When asked about a moment that she will remember from this season, Cait replied, “The most memorable moment for me as a captain was beating Huron and Mitchell after a five game losing streak.” Every

member of the soccer team will remember this moment; for the seniors; however, winning these games was certainly unforgettable.

Cait said that her goals for this season were to help lead the team into playoffs; however this goal was sadly unachieved due to the team’s record. When asked about what she would change if she could change something from this season, she replied by saying that she would increase not only the amount of time spent on individual skills, but also the amount of work to help the team improve as a whole. At the end of every soccer season, there is a team banquet with awards given to the players that certainly made an impact throughout the season. Both Cait and Alicia received awards at the banquet. Cait received the Hustle Award for her strength and resilience throughout the season, and Alicia was granted with the Leadership Award for her ability to lead the team and to make sure no one was discouraged at any time throughout any game. Cait and Alicia, who both worked hard throughout the season, helped lead the team to greatness. Through the struggles, the team still managed to overcome their challenges of the season with help from their supportive captains.

Preparing For Championship Football HUNTER CHEAR This year, the varsity football team at Harrisburg High School, made it a season to remember.

By practicing hard, playing fast, and winning games, the football team has become very successful. The team went undefeated in their conference; as a result, Harrisburg was the 11AA ESD Football Champions, which is the first time Harrisburg has won the title since they moved up to AA in 2013. On all three levels, freshmen, junior varsity, and varsity, there have been major successes. The head coach, Brandon White, said, “The main focus for this team all year has been to play our best football in the end. We have also focused on not having any regrets. We have really developed a love for the game and what it takes to be successful day in and day out.” Since then, the team advanced to the 11AA State Championship game to battle the Mitchell Kernels in Vermillion on Friday, November 11. When asked

about the mindset going into the game, Coach White said, “We are the underdog. We will go in with the mindset that we need to earn everything. We need to play fast – physical football. No turnovers and have fun!” Rather than having extra stress about this game, Coach White will prepare his team just like he would any other game. “I am not a big believer that we need to change a bunch of things. We need to be confident in what we do and make them adjust to us.”

The team will have to be focused, concentrated, and determined and to play their best at the championship game. Throughout the season, the players have done an outstanding job building confidence in one another.

Together, they have bonded as a team. With only three words, Coach White described this season as: perseverance, unforgettable, and fun. In the end, the Tigers felt short to the Mitchell Kernels in the 11AA championship game with a score of 41-6.

The Road To The Dome KENNEDY PIRLET The Harrisburg tiger football team, with help from its fans, made it to the class 11AA championship game at the Dakota Dome. The Tigers (9-2) faced the Mitchell Kernels (10-1) at the championship game on Friday night. Though the tigers fell and took state runner-up, the support from the Tiger fans is endless.

The Harrisburg student section was packed Friday night, as students came out to cheer on their football team. Excitement filled the air as the team took the field. The Tiger fans waved their touchdown flags and screamed in support of their favorite football team.

HHS students had been dedicated to helping their boys to a championship victory all year long. The student section was filled every Friday night, with fans dressing for the theme of the night. Spirit from the Tiger students only encouraged the boys to play harder in order to make their fans proud. A successful season is teamwork between the team and their fans.

Although the Tigers lost, we must remain optimistic. The football team advanced to the championship game. They took their fans all the way to the Dakota Dome this year, when they could’ve been watching from home. As this season comes to a close, the flame of a Tiger state victory does not extinguish as players and coaches alike prepare for next season. As the tiger fans would say, “WE’RE PROUD OF OUR TEAM, SAY WE’RE PROUD OF OUR TEAM!”

Presidential Election TAYLOR PFAFF The 2016 Presidential Election caused a lot of controversy among Americans.

Donald Trump for the Republicans and Hillary Clinton for the Democrats argued and debated over many topics, and in the end, it came down to what the people wanted.

Trump, who had 276 electoral votes, defeated Clinton, who had 228 votes. Swing states such as Florida, Pennsylvania, Michigan, North Carolina, Virginia, Colorado, Ohio, Wisconsin, Nevada, New Hampshire,

and Iowa played a big role in this election; ultimately, they changed the outcome. Although Clinton did win the popular vote, Trump was the one to receive the 270 electoral votes. There was a lot to debate about amongst Americans this election. Many people believed that neither of the candidates was valid, honorable, or ethical. Iowa and Wisconsin were two major states that changed from Democrat to Republican during the 2016 Election. Since the election started, people have been interested in each of the candidate’s campaign.

Both of these candidates, Trump and Clinton, impacted Americans by their strong platforms.

What Does It Take To Become A College Athlete?

ZACH VANBEEK As new athletic seasons come around this winter, and six seniors at HHS signed just a few weeks ago, it is evident that athletes are thinking about going into college sports and understanding what it takes to be a college athlete. I interviewed Ethan Roth, a student athlete at USD, who was recruited for football his senior year of high school and is now half way through his freshman year of college. Ethan explained that the main difference between high school and college is time management; students can either sleep or choose to study, so, they need to be self disciplined and committed to their studies. He then went on and discussed how the transition affected him personally, saying that it was weird not living

at home for the first few weeks, but eventually he got used to it.

Next we discussed what college coaches are looking for, and he explained that grades are the most important criteria for getting recruited. If students don’t have the grades, they cannot play, simple as that. Also, they look for studentathletes that are going to be able to balance both school and sports at the same time. Time is an important factor; he said that it takes more than you think. College athletes have practice five days a week, and during the week you must complete six hours of study hall time and two hours of math alone. Finally, to sum up his experience in one sentence, HANNAH ABBOTT — REPORTER he said since it is a commitment, it takes a lot of time, but can be worth it overall in the end. For high school athletes, like myself, this is a big eye opener into the college world that we will all face in a few short years.

Teenager Campaigns For Skate Park STEPHEN KRALL Fourteen-yearold Billy Nelson advocates for a skate park to be built at Heartland Park in Harrisburg.

The reasoning for his drive is that he and his friends are tired of skating on the basketball court. He promoted this idea a year and a half ago and has gone to 17 meetings for the skate park. At the moment, the Harrisburg parks and rec department is in the process of getting the money set up for building; Billy has been granted a total of $30,000 dollars. He could have asked for more, but he feels that it is a reasonable cost for the size of the park to be built. The park

itself is going to have three quarter pipes, three rails, three boxes, and one set of stairs in various locations.

Kyle Hanisch, who is a Harrisburg citizen, believes this park is a good idea because it would get the kids of Harrisburg outside and active.

Also, he believes that it is great that someone is willing to take the lead for such an effort. He has been to numerous city council meetings and knows about the skate park being built; he also has kids of his own.

If the skate park can be built fast enough, his own kids most likely will spend time there. His family would be willing to donate to the cause, but he hopes the city council will pay for the majority of the cost because it is for the city’s benefit.

December was a pretty laid back month for the Harrisburg HOSA chapter. Events are finalized, a field trip was taken, and a Science Saturday closed up the month that led up to Christmas break. Students selected their events to compete with at state and the maximum number of

events one student can compete in is two—one individual event and one team event. Returning members chose events pretty quickly, but the new members got to have an in-depth look at all of the events and choose one that was right for them. On December 7th, students went to Avera for the Avera All-Access Tour, which is a fun tour that allows students to see a closer look at health careers. Lastly, Science Saturday was on December 17th, and the theme was Christmas!

Both high schoolers and elementary students had a blast designing and partaking in Christmas themed experiments. We can’t wait to see what the new year has to bring our chapter in the coming months!

Curtains Are Open For The Theater Department WINTER VANVELDHUIZEN The theater department is off to a show-stopping start with The Diary of Anne Frank already finished. Mr. Michael Smith directed the play. It took place on the 10th, 11th, and 12th of November in the Harrisburg PAC (Performing Arts Center) at 7:00pm. After the Veterans Day Program on the 11th, the cast shared their story with all the 7th grade advanced ELA classes, all 8th grade ELA classes, and all fourth and fifth grade classes from Liberty and Endeavor. Kyja Norris, the drama club president, is excited about upcoming events in the theater department. She was also involved in the recent play; she played Edith Frank, Anne’s mother.

When asked about her favorite moments from the process of putting the show together, she responded with, “I have a few favorite parts... I loved playing such a deep character, it was difficult at first, but after, I really got into it. It was like reliving the events that took place in her life, and it was really cool to see what life was like.” Kyja also noted that there are more opportunities to see the theater department in action. Look out for a musical, a one-act play, and a group trip. One-act this year will be in Aberdeen and the play is Anne Of Green Gables. The play must run under forty-five minutes because of the completion regulations. It is about a young orphan girl that falls in love with a friend. The musical this year, Annie, will come to the stage in the spring. Annie is a musical that has been on Broadway many times. Annie is also about a young orphan girl. Before Christmas break, auditions will be held for both of these productions in the PAC. In January there is a trip to Minneapolis, Minnesota, for all drama club members. They will be seeing shows and going to theater events. Please come support the Harrisburg Theater Department and watch out for performance dates of the one-act and musical.

Endeavor Elementary “Socktober” Helps Local Community Members LISA M NORRIS Did you know that there are over 600,00 homeless people in the US? There are over 1000 in SD and over 400 in Sioux Falls. This was not alright with Team Norris! We knew that socks were the most needed item of clothing, but the least donated item. So, we decided to join the efforts of Kid President and started a sock drive for Socktober!

Team Norris had read Crenshaw, a book about a boy and his family, who were homeless. We also read Wonder, a book all about showing kindness.

Our Team received a banner from the author, for being a “Choose Kind Classroom”. We did random acts of kindness to earn this acknowledgment.

After several discussions, we thought Socktober would be a great way to help make a difference in our community and embrace these themes.

We made posters, talked to classrooms, our families and neighbors and set out to gather as many socks as we could. Travis Lape, an Assistant Principal for Harrisburg, challenged the participants of his SD EDCamp to donate… they brought in 350 pairs. His innovation and willingness to help paid off.

Thanks to Travis and to everyone who donated to our cause.

The final count… 1000 pairs of socks! That is awesome! We donated the socks to The Family Connection, Bishop Dudley House and Bosses Pizza, here in Sioux Falls. The owners of Bosses Pizza, Jeremy and Heidi Seefeldt cook for the homeless on Thanksgiving and they will be handing out our socks. It was a wonderful learning experience, and we hope to make a difference in the lives of others. We challenge everyone to be kinder than necessary, 365 days a year.

Journey Elementary Makerspace “Break-Out” MRS. BETH WELLS, JOURNEY ELEMENTARY LIBRARIAN This year, Journey 4th grade students are completing some STEM challenges in the library during their Tuesday Makerspace Time.

Mrs. Hoffman, Computer Teacher and Technology Integrationist and Mrs. Wells, Librarian, are collaborating to encourage students to make things related to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Our first challenge paired with the book Rosie Revere, Engineer by Andrea Beaty. The theme of the story encourages students to try and fail and try again. Students made a helicopter with paper and a paperclip and then competed to see which designs would have the slowest descent to the ground.

The following week students had to solve several puzzles to unlock a box.

The BreakoutEDU challenge included five locks that the students had to figure out how to unlock in order to win. The theme was Monsters, and students worked to unlock their boxes while listening to Monster Mash.

The puzzles included a directional maze-type puzzle, a word to unscramble with letters on bats, some math with jack-o-lantern shapes and QR codes, some invisible ink and Ultra Violet flashlight, along with clues hidden throughout the library. All groups completed the challenge and posed with their team for a photo.

DANAE WIEKING On Friday, November 11th, 2016 students from Mrs. Wieking’s fourth grade class were able to celebrate Veterans day with special guests: Trent Bruce(active duty), Denny Sisson (Vietnam War), Larry Anderson (Korean War), and Ty Friederich (Vietnam War).
