The theme for their concert is “A Merry Holiday,” as they will perform songs to get us in the mood for the upcoming holiday season!

Did You Know?

Congress has yet to extend the enhanced Section 179 first year depreciation deduction for certain business expenditures. Legislation is expected to happen in late 2014 and be retroactive to the beginning of the year. If not extended, the allowable Section 179 deduction for 2014 will be $25,000, as compared to 2012 and 2013 of $500,000. Businesses should be watch for the extension and be aware of this before making purchases before year-end.

Snow Alert Policy The City of Harrisburg will declare a “Snow Alert” when an accumulation of 2” is either forecast for the city or should the city have no prior forecast warning, when the snow plows are dispatched. This could also include blowing or drifting snow that would require plowing.

All on-street parking shall be prohibited on both sides of the street, regardless of the directional run of that street until it has been plowed curb to curb. Section 14: Obstructing snow removal and street cleaning.

No vehicle shall be parked in such a manner or for such a period of time as to unreasonably interfere with or obstruct the removal of snow from, or the cleaning of, the streets in the city. Parking may resume when streets have been cleared of snow completely from curb to curb.

Ticketing will begin when plows are dispatched which could be anytime after the snow alert is issued. Towing of vehicles, trailers and other appurtenances will begin approximately 24 hours after the ticket has been issued.

It is each resident’s responsibility to keep your sidewalks clear of snow and ice. Blowing, pushing, shoveling or placing snow onto the roadways is not permitted. These policies will be enforced on a per-call basis.

Please exercise common sense during the winter plowing season and respect the plows.

Harrisburg Community Library Corner PHILIP OLINGER We look forward to seeing you at our annual Story Time with Santa event on Friday December 5th at 6:30 pm. We will have children’s story time, a craft and pictures with Santa during that time. We are also hoping to start a “Friends of the Library” board to help with fundraising projects to help meet the needs of our growing community. Mayor Julie Burke Bowen presented Dr. Ashley Mayland with a Certificate of Appreciation for his service and dedication to the Harrisburg Economic Development Corporation.

Dr. Mayland was a founding member of the HEDC and the Harrisburg Days Foundation and served as President of the HEDC since its incorporation. His devotion and service to our community has not gone unnoticed.

City Of Harrisburg Wastewater Facilities Plan Update Stockwell Engineers has completed the city’s wastewater facilities plan update and their presentations to the city council can be found at www. harrisburgsd.gov . The City Council will be making a decision at their December 1, 2014 City Council meeting on what option or options to pursue. Animal Ordinances The City of Harrisburg currently contracts with the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society. Any lost animals or animals in violation of the city ordinances will be brought to SFAHS, (605) 338-4441.

Residents are required to license their animals annually and keep their shots up to date.

PLEASE NOTE: Renewing of animal licenses is required every January.

Cost of an animal license is $5.00 and tags are obtained at city hall.

Owners of any dog, cat, or other animal held as a domestic pet shall not permit such animal to run at large at any time. A leash is required AT ALL TIMES. If found, these animals are impounded and expenses and fines are paid by owner.

The City receives many complaints of barking dogs. These cases may be considered a disturbance of the peace by animals. Please take necessary steps to prevent this to avoid any fines.

When walking your pet, please carry a bag with you to clean up after your pet and dispose of properly.

Our faculty ask each spring for dollars to afford their students to do the “extras”, attend athletic camps, conferences, and travel to competitions locally and nationally. The more numbers we have who volunteer their time in our fundraising and attend our once-monthly meetings (third Wednesday of each month, 7 pm, high school librar y), and assist with decision- making, the more dollars we can divvy to our faculty and his/her activity. FFA State Bound MS. TARA FASTERT On November 17 the Harrisburg FFA Chapter traveled to Hartford, South Dakota to compete Fall Leadership CDEs against Baltic, BrandonValley, Chester, Colman-Egan, Dell Rapids, Flandreau, Garretson, Tri-Valley, and West Central FFA Chapters. Twenty-five students participated in seven different Career Development Events (CDEs).

Seven students from five chapters competed in Public Speaking, in this contest students write a six to eight minute speech, memorize it, and recite it in from of a panel of judges. Kailyn Mutsch and Ashlynne Benninga participated in Prepared Public Speaking, Beninga is alternate to State.

Extemporaneous Speaking is a contest that will put you on your toes; you draw three topics, pick one and are given thirty minutes to write a four to six minutes speak on the topic. Ben Ostebee received 2nd Place in Extemporaneous Speaking and will advance to the state contest; there were twelve students from eight chapters who competed including Samantha Peterson.

Cassidy Rippentrop has spent the past month memorizing the FFA Creed, tonight recited it for a panel of judges. They evaluated her on how well she knew the Creed, how she presented it, and her interpretation of it. Rippentrop received

third Place in Creed Speaking, she competed against eleven students from seven different chapters and will advance to the State contest.

Alyvia Ahnberg and Samantha Peterson both interview to become a Kennel Care Attendant. Job Interview is just like it sounds; students prepare a cover letter, resume, application, go through an interview, and write a thank you letter. These girls competed against twelve other participants from nine different chapters; Samantha Peterson is alternate to State.

Harrisburg FFA Attends National Convention MATT HUDSON This year, 64,409 FFA members and registered guests, a record number, attended the 87th National FFA Convention and Expo in Louisville, Ky. This year’s convention theme — “Go All Out!”— asks members to take action, give their all, and put everything they have into everything they do. I did just that, I gave it my all and went all out! Attending Convention has taught me a lot about the Organization I love so much. FFA is a massive organization, the current membership in stands at 610,240 members, and has been helping people around the world since it was created.

I could tell you a bunch of facts about FFA, but you would probably forget them as soon as you wake up tomorrow. Instead I would like to tell you why attending a National FFA Convention is such an amazing experience and why I encourage everyone to strive for the privilege to attend a National Convention. This year was my second year attending and I was not disappointed. The sheer amount of people attending still amazes me today. From the state of Alaska to Puerto Rico and from Maine to Hawaii, every state is accounted for. You are able to strike up a conversation with any member from any state simply because of the connection you both have with a blue corduroy jackets on.

One of the most wonderful thing to see while at Convention is the support FFA receives from colleges and businesses. All of the organization that have a booth in the expo center have various reasons for attending

Convention and some of them may even have rival companies there, but one thing they all have in common is their desire for the FFA to succeed and they continue to come year after year to support the FFA. I was also able to watch the National Parliamentary Procedure Career Development Event, watching this competition was a true privilege. I compete in this CDE, observing these teams will help me improve my skills on a local level. Not only is attending National FFA Convention a learning experience, it is also fun. I had the opportunity to explore the Career Show, shop in the FFA Mall, attend a few workshops and sessions, as well as tour Slugger Museum & Factory, Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby Museum.

The keynote speakers are another amazing thing to see, several motivational speakers come to Convention each year to speak during the general sessions, it is inspiring to hear the message they have for high school students and future leaders of America. One that really had my attention this year was Nick Vujicic. Vujicic was born without arms or legs, he explained how he endured bullying and teasing while he was in school and how those experiences helped him quickly realize that living a life with purpose and kindness is critical. He encouraged FFA members to live a life with an open heart and mind and to always show compassion and kindness. Nick is an amazing motivational speaker and it is things like this that encourage me to tell all FFA members to shoot for the stars by attending the National FFA Convention.

Harrisburg Debate Team Experiences Sweet Success The Harrisburg HS Debate team started the season with a number of strong performances. The team to a small group to Watertown to compete in the Pumpkinstakes Speech Contest on November 1. Ben Menke led the way by placing 4th in Novice Extemp and 6th in Original Oratory with Hayden Cole placing 5th in Novice Extemp.

The HHS Novice Debate team – the first year competitors – opened their season at SF Lincoln on Tuesday, November 4 in dominating fashion.

Of the twenty-one teams entered in the competition, there were six undefeated teams of which five were from HHS. Those going undefeated were the two person teams of Evan Papka and Jack Olson, Audra Nickel and Hayden Cole, Hallie Sagness and Ben Menke, Claire Tufty and Cody Schriever, and Allyson Kowalski and Alexis Janssen

proved too much for the completion and the teams took the top four spots in the meet. Hayden Cole and Landon Dinger tied with Ben Menke and Hallie Sagness for first place as they were the only two undefeated teams after five preliminary rounds. Megan Yee, debating by herself against two-person teams, finished in third place and Allyson Kowalski and Cody Schriever finishing in fourth place. Varsity public forum debaters Sydney Tuttle and Ann Marie Anderson finished in fourth place and Jordann Krouse finished fourth in novice Lincoln-Douglas debate. Krouse also placed fifth in storytelling in the speech part of the tournament.

The novice team completed its last after school tournament at Sioux Falls Roosevelt on November 18. Twenty-five teams were present and four teams finished the meet undefeated. The Tigers had three of those teams, led by Hayden Cole and Audra Nickel, Ben Menke and Hallie Sagness, and Landon Dinger debating alone.

The team continues its season in December by hosting an after school novice meet December 2nd and will travel to meets at Brandon Valley, Brookings, and Des Moines, IA.

The following weekend found the Harrisburg Debate team competing at the SF Roosevelt Sweetstates. Leading the way and winning a ½ sheet cake was junior Jordann Krouse with a first place victory in Novice Lincoln Douglas debate. Jordann finished the day with an undefeated 6-0 record.

Seniors Ann Marie Anderson and Alex Cain finished as semi-finalists in the varsity public forum division. The team finished 5-2 on the day, and came with in one ballot of making the final round. They received a certificate and a nice cupcake for their hard work.

Freshman Hayden Cole and Landon Dinger placed second in novice public forum debate. The team finished as the only undefeated team in preliminary rounds and fell in the final round on a 2-1 decision. Hallie Sagness and Ben Menke also qualified for elimination rounds with a 4-1 record and finished as semifinalists. The novice also enjoyed a cupcake.

On Thursday, November 13 the novice squad again had multiple entries go undefeated at the Sioux Falls Washington After School meet. The twoperson teams of Audra Nickel and Hayden Cole, Jack Olson and Evan Papka, and Landon Dinger and Megan Yee completed the four-round competition unscathed.

HHS Band Members Selected For The Augustana Band Festival And East Central Honor Band JASON GROON Harrisburg High School was represented by 8 students at the 57th Annual Augustana College Band Festival on November 14th & 15th. Nicole Pierson, Sylvia Larson, Ben Aasheim, Alexandra Lindner, Cole Hanselman, Garrett Buchanan, Emilie Larson, and Paige Schnetter spent two days on the Augustana College Campus with nearly 300 other high school instrumentalists and 70 band directors representing schools from Iowa, Minnesota, and South Dakota. A Grand Finale Concert was held in the Great Hall of the Washington Pavilion on the evening of November 15th that featured the Augustana Band and three Festival Bands.

In addition to the Augustana Band Festival, four Harrisburg High School students were also selected to the 17th annual East Central Honor Band. The one-day event was held on Monday, December 1st on the campus of South Dakota State University. Kevin Kessler, currently a DMA candidate in conducting and Graduate Teaching Assistant at The University of Iowa, directed the honor band and Carl Spaeth, visiting instructor of Jazz and Saxophone at South Dakota State University, directed the honor jazz ensemble. HHS students Nicole Pierson, Emilie Larson, Ben Aasheim, and Garrett Buchanan enjoyed a day of rehearsals, master classes, and an evening performance in the SDSU Performing Arts Center.

Can you believe it’s already December? With the holiday seasons upon us, many organizations within the high school are busier than ever, and that’s no different for your favorite student council. In October our members have been involved in everything from putting on a good scare with our annual haunted house, to creating stars in honor of our veterans, to starting up the yearly Teddy Bear Fundraiser. The haunted house took place on October 23rd in collaboration with the school’s FCCLA students. Transformed with a creepy amusement park theme, Mr. Amolins’ chemistry room successfully spooked the older attendees at a late hour, and accommodated to the younger ones at an earlier time.

Secondly, Harrisburg High School acknowledged that Veteran’s Day is an important holiday to recognize. In honor of our veterans, student council collected names of those who have served America and wrote them on stars that were hung throughout the duration of the week. Finally, it is that time of year again where student council fundraises money both to be given to CMA (Children’s Miracle Network) and money used to buy Christmas presents for children staying in our local hospitals. Typically, we raise money to purchase Teddy bears for each child, however this year we changed it up a bit and are purchasing more specific gifts such as Barbie dolls, action figures etc. This change allows the council to continue providing children with Christmas gifts, but also allows us to donate more to CMA. Thank you for your continued support and help in making Stuco so great!

TIGER VOLLEYBALL HEADS TO STATE SYDNEY FIKSE This past season, the Harrisburg Tigers were successful in their district playoff games and earned their spot in the South Dakota Class AA Volleyball Tournament. The Tigers had to fight their way past the Lincoln Patriots and the Yankton Gazelles. Not only did this squad earn their spot in the state tournament, they became the District 2AA champions. The Tigers are headed to play the third-ranked Watertown Arrows at 6:00, Thursday, in the first round of the tournament. The other teams in the tournament include O’Gorman, Aberdeen Central, Huron, Rapid City Stevens, Roosevelt, and Pierre. The state tournament will take place November 20 - 22 at the Summit Activities Center in Yankton.

North Middle School

Harrisburg North Middle School Community Service Day On October 2nd the Harrisburg North Middle School student body participated in a school wide community service day. Each advisory was assigned a place to go and serve for two hours in the afternoon. HNMS had a total of twenty-five advisories and 453 students along with staff and parent helpers that volunteered their time on that day.

The day started out with team building activities within each students’ advisory.

Then each advisory has lunch had lunch in their classroom and then went to the gym for the kick off assembly for the community service event. The assembly featured Haley Bruggeman and Cody Cook Harrisburg high school seniors that have been recognized as the Harrisburg Hometown heroes along with their director Phil Olson that spoke about being a person of character and how we should all strive to be polished stones. The student body also received a welcome from the Harrisburg homecoming king and queen. Mrs. Alton presented a motivational video about community service and then the students were sent to their placements. It was a great experience for all involved and something that Harrisburg North Middle School looks forward to every year.

American Revolution Simulation MRS. HUFFMAN The next five weeks in Mrs. Huffman’s American History class, students will experience an American Revolution simulation. A simulation is a teacherdirected, student driven activity that provides lifelike problem-solving experiences through role-playing and reenacting historical events.

Students will find out what it was like to live as a colonist in 1770’s Massachusetts. After choosing an occupation, they will discover that colonial life is going to change considerably. The students will have to choose to either remain loyal to King George III or risk everything and become a Patriot and fight for America’s independence. The simulation will focus on the most important aspects of the war and will end when the entire class participates in the British surrender at Yorktown.

Throughout all of these events, students will keep a diary of their experiences. Mrs. Huffman will use the students’ diary entries as ongoing assessments to determine what the students are learning throughout the simulation. She also uses the diaries to understand how she can improve the simulation for future classes.

Patriot’s Pen Winners Each year more than 100,000 students in grades 6-8 enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest. The first-place winner from each state competes to win one of 46 national awards totaling $46,000. The national first-place winner wins $5,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., in March. The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief.

This year the theme was “Why I Appreciate Veterans.” Every student in Language Arts class wrote a paper and the top five were chosen as the winners. Their papers will now be forwarded on to the state competition to have a chance to be chosen as the state’s top essay.

The top winners were Trey Pederson 1st place, Brecli Honner 2nd place, Josie Boyd 3rd place, Brooklyn Bollweg 4th place, and Macy Rott 5th place.

It’s Robotics Season CHRISTOPHER STEWART November 22nd eleven robotics teams from around the state arrived in Harrisburg for the second annual VEX Robotics Tournament hosted by the two time state champ Tiger Robotics team. The tournament gave teams a chance to scope out the competition from around the state while competing in this year’s current VEX Robotics Challenge Sky Rise.

This year’s challenge pits two robots and their drivers against two opposing teams to see who can build towers and stack cubes the highest. An impressive feat considering the robots start the match no taller than 18 inches, but must lift cubes up to 4 feet of the ground.

Vex Robotics is one of three different robotics leagues that Tiger Robotics participates in. Tiger Robotics also fields a team in the First Lego League, which has been around and flourishing for many years. This year Tiger Robotics also competed in a new and growing league called BEST Robotics. All robotics leagues share the similar

goal of inspiring students into the science, technology, engineering, or mathematics fields of study through the use of robotics and friendly competition.

20 students from Harrisburg South and North Middle Schools, as well as the Harrisburg High School, meet at South Middle School daily to design, build and program the robots used in each of the three different competition.

Tiger Robotics is coached by a team of volunteers, including Chris Stewart, Steve Fox, and Nate Hadrick.

The team is funded primarily through sponsorships from local businesses and Harrisburg families.

The Life Of An 8th Grade Equestrian MARIA MCKNIGHT Kayla is not just a student at HSMS, but an accomplished equestrian as well. She has been riding horses since she was 7 when she went to summer camp and fell in love with riding. Two years ago, she received her first horse, Rocky, for her 12th birthday and started training him for Penning and Sorting through the help of some family friends. She was able to get in some competitions and learning her way around the Southeast South Dakota Horse Shows. When Kayla was 13, she was given Rebel and Jester for her birthday after losing Rocky to old age.

She began working with Jester to run speed events, such as Barrels and Poles, and Rebel for show events such as Western Pleasure and fun events like Egg and Spoon. She began showing in both Southeast SD Horse Shows and 4-H events. She has earned ribbons and awards along the way and even took first place at Windy Hills competition in Barrels. Kayla does her own training of her horses with the help of her 4-H leader Lori Plucker, of the Lucky Lopers 4-H Club.

Kayla not only spends hours every week training and working with her horses, but she is in charge of cleaning up after them as well. She raises money to pay for her love of horses by babysitting and doing odd jobs for her parents. During the summer months, she works 8 hours a day, 4 days a week babysitting, then spends 3-4 hours with her horses. She is one responsible young lady! She hopes to join the Women’s Pro Rodeo Association some day and compete in Barrel Racing and maybe Poles too.

Kayla says her love of horses started as a little girl when her grandma, sister and her used to play with the toy horses that her grandma had at her house. I guess the love really stuck! Thank you, Kayla, for spending some time with me and teaching me a little more about the world of horse shows.

I can’t wait to say, “I knew her when!”

Vocabulary Basics CARLA DIEDE Do you know what an ohm or a farad is used to measure? Or what a high power discharge of electricity between two or more conductors is called? If you are an electrical engineer then there is a good chance you understood the previous questions. If not, there is a good chance that some of the terms in the questions were foreign to you.

Just as each career field has its own set of terminology so does each course of study in education. Not to say that there isn’t overlap between courses, but each course whether it is math, science, language arts, history or computer all contain terms unique to their courses that are vital in order to fully understand the concepts the course covers.

Here are a couple of tips to help students grasp the meaning of

vocabulary terms. First, examine the word in context. Even if you don’t understand the meaning of a word, looking at how it is used in a sentence or in an example can give you an idea of what the word means. Once you have an understanding of a vocabulary word, you can reinforce leaning by using it in a sentence or explaining the meaning in your own words. To help make connections with the vocabulary term, it is helpful to represent it using different forms; for example, a written description of the word, a picture of the word, examples of what the word represents, non-examples of the word, etc.. Each person’s learning style is unique, while one student may connect well with a visual representation of a vocabulary term, another student may understand it better by examining examples and non-examples of the word. No matter what the strategy, vocabulary plays a vital role and everyone needs to find their own pathway to understanding the words around them.

Social Studies Curriculum Shopping CHRISTOPHER ANDRE Harrisburg Middle School Social Studies teachers are hoping to make the current curriculum another piece of history. The current materials have been used for the past eight years and are showing the wear and tear of daily use. The materials are also limited in their accessibility to both teachers and students, with most online access being outdated and obsolete.

With the guidance of Secondary Curriculum Director, Dr. Kip McKee, a team of teachers from both middle schools, building administrators, and members of the technology department have met with representatives from three major curriculum publishers to sample their latest materials. It is a weighty task, but the team is examining each sample provided by vendors and scoring them on a rubric to ensure that they meet high standards. Factors being considered in the search for new Social Studies materials fall under three main categories: content, organization and style, and support materials.

New curriculum will also need to come with support materials that integrate technology to promote understanding of the content. The technology must be user friendly, easily accessible, and work on a variety of devices and formats. The idea is to have resources to extend student learning, while striving for paper-less classrooms.

In a nutshell, the team is looking for high-quality Social Studies materials that meet the needs of students in a 21st Century classroom. The goal is to reconvene as a team and have the final decision by early spring.

Endeavor Elementary Sharing Gifts At Christmas LISA M NORRIS The artists in the Endeavor Sketch club are sharing their gift of creativity this Christmas. The 80 artists in this drawing club are designing Christmas cards to share with patients at the Veterans Hospital and also The Banquet. Sketch discussed that there are people in our lives who never receive a Christmas card at Christmas, so we wanted to bring some people joy and remind them that they are loved. The cards are all unique and one of a kind! The artists did a wonderful job and we hope to share our Christmas spirit!

Endeavor participated in Coins For Kids. It is a program sponsored by the United Way. The money that is donated goes towards purchasing books for children in our community through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Endeavor raised $1223.27 in change!

Explorer Elementary Star Wars Reads Day Strikes Back KINDERGARTEN TEACHERS On October 10th Star Wars characters came to Explorer Elementary to promote reading in conjunction to the nation Star Wars Reads Day! Amy DeNomme, the Explorer librarian arranged the thrilling event. Students lined the hallways with books in hand as the Star Wars characters encourage the enjoyment of reading. Each student was excited to receive a Star Wars bookmark!

My little brother and big brother, mom and dad, Zoe and Brenna will be invited. For dessert, we will have ice cream that NEVER melts. Then we will go play cars and princesses.

Kylie: I am going to get my turkey from Walmart. It will cost $200.00. My mom will help me put it in the cart and we will take it to my house. I will put the turkey in the microwave for 2 minutes. I will take the turkey out of the oven and put it on the table. I will have grapes, dead fish, apples, spinach and carrots with the turkey. All my Grandmas and Grandpas will be invited! After dinner we will play hide and seek.

Eliah I will hunt for the turkey in my garden. I will cook him in the oven for 2 minutes. I will grab his wings and pull him out. Then we will eat the turkey with pickles, potatoes, and spaghetti, with milk to drink. My Mom, Dad, Grandma, and Grandpa will eat the turkey with me.

Grace I would go to Hy-Vee to get my turkey and it would cost $2.00. I would put it in a pan and cook it in the oven for 50 minutes. I would wear my gloves and take it out of the oven when it was done and let it cool down. Then I would pluck the legs and bring the turkey to Grandma’s house. We will eat apples and carrots with the turkey. After eating the turkey I will go in my favorite room, Adam’s room, and watch TV. Kennedy I will get the turkey from Papa. I will then put it in the oven and cook it for 5 minutes. I would invite Papa, Grandma and auntie to eat with us. I would cut the turkey and put it on the table.

I would eat the turkey with a fork. I would have green beans, corn, watermelon, blueberries, and asparagus with the turkey. After dinner we would have pumpkin pie for dessert.

Landon I would find my turkey in the forest. I would hunt it down with a bow. You know most guys have four wheelers to drive; I think I would use that to go home. I would tie him up with a rope so he wouldn’t fall off on the way to my house. I would carry him upstairs to the table. I would put him in the oven and cook him for 18 minutes. Then I would cut him up and put him on the table. My Mom, Dad, and cousins would come for dinner.

We would cut the turkey into small pieces for my cousins and I. My mom and Dad just rip off the meat and will eat it. Then we would go downstairs, eat ice cream, and watch TV. Gavin I think Aden, my friend, will shoot me a turkey in the forest. Aden will put the turkey in the truck and give it to me. I will bring it home. Then I will get the ingredients like sugar and flour so it doesn’t get dirty. I will cook it for I don’t know how many minutes, maybe 10. I will get some oven gloves, and put it in a pan and let it cool off for 10 or 12 minutes and then we will put it on the table. I will bring some paper plates and we will cut it in slices so we can eat it! J I will probably bring some desserts for Thanksgiving

Aden My Dad and I would go and shoot my turkey from the wild. We would lift it in the truck and bring it to my house. This might be creepy, but I will cut the legs off of the turkey and keep them.

We will put it in the oven for 10 minutes and take it out and put it on a plate. Then I will put it on the table with a little bit of applesauce and some drinks, like milk. There will be a treat after dinner if you eat all your turkey. Grandma and my cousins will be there. After we eat we will go to bed.

Emily I will look everywhere for a turkey and find it at the farm. I will run as fast as I can and try to catch it. When I catch it I will take the skin off of the turkey. I will put him in a big giant net and have my map on my phone get me back to my house. I will put it in the oven for about 2 hours or 1, I don’t know. My Mom knows when it is done because she has big ears. I will eat the entire leg with ketchup. We will also have peas, corn and pork chops. Everyone in the school is invited, EVEN Mrs. K and Mrs. Pederson. After eating, Grandma will tell us to go play.

Trinity I will find my turkey in the woods. I will run as fast as I can and catch it. I will grab it and bring it into the back end of my van. My mom will drive the van to my house. I will hold it down with an extension cord. I will cook it in my oven for 15 minutes. I will cut the turkey and I will bring it to the table. The whole school and Mrs. G will be invited for supper. I will serve potatoes and corn with the turkey. After dinner, I will sweep the floor and do the dishes when we are done.

Reese I will find a turkey out in a country field. Me, Gavin, Garrit and my Daddy will spot the turkey and shoot it. We will put it in the back of the pick up and drive to my house. I will cook it in the oven for 5 minutes. We have a dingy thing that will tell us the turkey is done. I will put it on the table with ham, pickles and that’s it. My entire family will be invited, even my great grandma.

Then we will have ice cream for dessert. Then we will play outside in the snow!

Ashton I will find my turkey at the Sams club shop. I will buy it for 10 quarters. Then I will take my turkey home and put it in the oven. I will cook it for 10 seconds. After I cook it for 10 seconds I will wash it off and put salt on it. I will cut the turkey and put it on the plates. I will yank the turkey legs off

for myself. I will also have corn, potatoes, and water. My family and I will eat the dinner. I will throw away the bones and watch Turkey shows with my family.

Karah I will get my turkey at Hy-Vee for $1.00. I will also get cake and cupcakes for dinner. I will put it in the oven for 20 seconds. I will hear it beep and then I will know the turkey is done. I will take it out of the oven with a plate. I will then set the table. My friends, cousins, aunt and uncle, grandma and grandpa will come. After we are done eating I will go outside and play at my park.

Kyle I will travel to Oakwood to have Thanksgiving with my brothers. I will get the turkey at Hy-Vee and it might cost probably $60.00 or $50.00 or $20.00, hm I don’t know. I will go home and put it in the oven. I will put the turkey in the oven for probably 15 or 14 minutes. I will be VERY careful and take the turkey out. I will put vegetables and fruit with the turkey because I really want to be healthy. My Mom, Dad, Grandma and Grandpa and sister will be invited. We will have cookies for dessert.

Jackson I will get my turkey from the store, Hy-Vee. It will cost probably $7.00. I will cook it in the oven for 5 minutes. I will cut the turkey and put it on the table but first I will need to set it. I will put my Mom’s tablecloth on first, and then I will put real plates on the table. I will make sure salt and pepper is on the table for my Dad. I will have watermelon, apples, and carrots with the turkey. Afterward, we will all go play in the snow.

I would shoot the turkey and then put it in the car and drive home. I would cook it in the oven for 1 minute. I would then take it out and yell “supper’s ready”. I would then put the plates on the table and the food. I would also add mashed potatoes, fruit and vegetables so it’s nice and healthy. Then we would pray and eat!

Grady I would get my turkey in the country. I would shoot the turkey with a riffle and then we would get the turkey and put it in the back of the truck.

When we get home we will take the meat out and bake it in the oven for 30 minutes. I will put it on the table and then I will call my cousins and my grandmas and grandpas. Then I will put the sandwiches, pudding, grapes, and the turkey on the table to eat. Then we will play football outside.

Mason I would find my turkey in the wild. I would shoot it with a gun and put it in a bag, and then put it in the truck. I will drive my truck to Grandmas house. I would cut off the meat at Grandmas house and put it in the oven. I would cook it in the oven for 2 hours., then I would set the table and put candles on it. My uncle, mom and Grandma and Grandpa will come. Afterward, I will clean up the table and drive home.

Journey Elementary The Pick Of The Patch At Journey MRS. SABRINA POWELL, JOURNEY 1ST GRADE TEACHER, MS. SANDIE CHILDS, JOURNEY ELEMENTARY ART INSTRUCTOR Mrs. Powell’s first grade students recently experienced pumpkins in a new way; learning from the inside out! The children read about the life cycle of a pumpkin, and observed a fresh specimen in class. They had lots of fun estimating the weight of the pumpkin, weighing it, and then “gutting” it to harvest the seeds. After separating the seeds out, allowing them to dry overnight, and baking them in the oven, all students put an estimate of the number of seeds collected from the pumpkin into a basket. There were 447 seeds, and the closest estimate was 500! How did first graders count all of those seeds? Each table group (5 total) was given a pile of seeds to count, as distributed by the teacher. Students used various counting strategies at each table (groups of 5, groups of 10, groups of 20) to count their seeds. Then, with Mrs. Powell’s help, they combined each table’s total to arrive at 447. Now what to do with all of those pumpkin seeds?

Science, math…Let’s integrate some more--- and take them into the art room, for yet another exciting learning experience! With art instructor Ms. Childs, the students were then involved in a fun review and demonstration of color theory and the color wheel. The seeds were divided and dyed the primary colors with food coloring and vinegar, and then divided again and mixed together in combinations to form the secondary colors. The students used the colorful seeds to create original artwork.

Liberty Elementary Liberty Elementary Veteran’s Day Assembly MRS. PASSICK On November 11th, all the students at Liberty took part in an assembly to honor our veterans. The program included a flag ceremony by the Harrisburg American Legion, patriotic songs sung by all students, and poems and essays written by our 4th and 5th grade students. The assembly ended with a slideshow tribute and a picture of all veterans in attendance. Thank you to our veterans for the sacrifices you have made!

Continued from Page 1: Crosswalk Safety going: one at the east school entrance and one at the west school entrance. Before and after school Liberty Elementary also has “Crossing Guards”. You may recognize them by their bright orange safety vests and the STOP sign they are holding. When the crossing guard has students to cross, he/she holds up the sign, waits to ensure that the traffic stops, and then keeps the traffic stopped until students are safely out of the crosswalk. Although you should always stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk, because the safety of children is involved, the traffic laws are even stricter in school zones. While the regular speed limit in front of Liberty Elementary is 25 mph, during the peak times (7:45am-8:15am and 3:00pm-3:30pm) it is reduced to 15 mph. If a driver should get a traffic citation for breaking this law, the fines are higher during those peak times (usually doubled). Fines can be even higher if you are a teen driver or a commercial vehicle driver.

While we understand it can be inconvenient to wait for students to cross the street and to drive so slowly through this area, it is very important that drivers abide by these speed limits to ensure that Liberty’s students and staff are safe!

Liberty Second graders have been very busy the last month. We celebrated Veteran’s Day with a school wide program and learned how to show respect to those that serve our country. We learned about Thanksgiving past and present. We made Turkey’s with geoblocks to review the geometric shapes we learned in math. We practiced and performed the play “The ABC’s Of The First Thanksgiving” for our parents.
