Tiger Volleyball Hoping To “Carve” Some Wins KAYE WEBER The Harrisburg Varsity Volleyball team, coaches, and managers used their day off from school on Columbus Day for team bonding. The group met at senior, Haley Bruggeman’s house for a pumpkin-carving contest. As it turned out, some of the girls should stick to playing volleyball, since their pumpkin carving skills needed some work. The varsity team enjoyed the afternoon of bonding, but they came back to practice Tuesday ready to prepare for their last four games of the season at Yankton (10/16), at Brookings (10/24), at home against Pierre (10/25), and at home against Watertown (10/28). Absolutely no other materials! This is not a dump site and those caught dumping would be in violation and turned over to the authorities. There is the possibility of closing the site for everyone if dumping of items other than those allowed continues.

Snow Alert Policy

Neighborhood Safety

The City of Harrisburg will declare a “Snow Alert” when an accumulation of 2” is either forecast for the city or should the city have no prior forecast warning, when the snow plows are dispatched. This could also include blowing or drifting snow that would require plowing.

All on-street parking shall be prohibited on both sides of the street, regardless of the directional run of that street until it has been plowed curb to curb.

Section 14: Obstructing snow removal and street cleaning. No vehicle shall be parked in such a manner or for such a period of time as to unreasonably interfere with or obstruct the removal of snow from, or the cleaning of, the streets in the city. Parking may resume when streets have been cleared of snow completely from curb to curb.

Ticketing will begin when plows are dispatched which could be anytime after the snow alert is issued. Towing of vehicles, trailers and other appurtenances will begin approximately 24 hours after the ticket has been issued.

It is each resident’s responsibility to keep your sidewalks clear of snow and ice. Blowing, pushing, shoveling or placing snow onto the roadways is not permitted. These policies will be enforced on a per-call basis.

Please exercise common sense during the winter plowing season and respect the plows.

Neighborhood Watch Informational Meeting There will be an informational meeting for Harrisburg Residents on starting a Neighborhood Watch on Thursday Oct. 23rd at 7pm at the Harrisburg City Hall. If interested please email Deputy Johns at tjohns@ lincolncountysd.org. See the article on the next page for further information regarding neighborhood watches.

Parking Limits It shall be unlawful for any motor vehicle to remain parked on any street, avenue, alley or public ground for a period of longer than 72 hours.

It shall be unlawful for any boat, trailer, or other appurtenance to park on any street, avenue, alley or other public ground.

It shall be unlawful for any camper (whether or not motorized) to remain parked on any street, avenue, alley or other public ground for longer than 24 hours. A special permit may be obtained for $5.00 per day with a limit of 4 consecutive days at the city hall office for visiting people with campers.

Animal Ordinances The City of Harrisburg currently contracts with the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society.

Any lost animals or animals in violation of the city ordinances will be brought to SFAHS, (605) 338-4441.

Residents are required to license their animals annually and keep their shots up to date. Cost of an animal license is $5.00 and tags are obtained at city hall. Renewing of any license is required in January of each year.

Owners of any dog, cat, or other animal held as a domestic pet shall not permit such animal to run at large at any time. A leash is required AT ALL TIMES. If found, these animals are impounded and expenses and fines are paid by owner.

The City receives many complaints of barking dogs. These cases may be considered a disturbance of the peace by animals.

Please take necessary steps to prevent this to avoid any fines.

When walking your pet, please carry a bag with you to clean up after your pet and dispose of properly.

Harrisburg North Middle School will be hosting a Scholastic book fair November 3-7. Everyone is invited to visit the book fairs during conferences. You will find a wide variety of books, as well as fun school supply items, such as posters, pencils and erasers. All book fairs can be accessed online as well. Apply at www.augie.edu/apply Starting A Neighborhood Watch Neighborhood Watch, Block Watch, Town Watch, Apartment Watch, Crime Watch -- no matter what it's called, this is one of the most effective and least costly answers to crime. Watch groups are a foundation of community crime prevention, they can be a stepping stone to community revitalization.

Phase One: Getting Started -- Meetings, Block Captains, and Maps • Form a small planning committee of neighbors to discuss needs, the level of interest, possible challenges, and the Watch concept.

• Contact the local police or sheriffs' department, or local crime prevention organization, to discuss Neighborhood Watch and local crime problems.

Invite a law enforcement officer to attend your meeting.

• Publicize your meeting at least one week in advance with door-to-door fliers and follow up with phone calls the day before.

• Select a meeting place that is accessible to people with disabilities.

• Hold an initial meeting to gauge neighbors' interest; establish purpose of program; and begin to identify issues that need to be addressed. Stress that a Watch group is an association of neighbors who look out for each other's families and property, alert the police to any suspicious activities or crime in progress, and work together to make their community a safer and better place to live.

• Prepare a neighborhood map showing names, addresses, and phone numbers of participating households and distribute to members. Block captains keep this map up to date, contacting newcomers to the neighborhood and rechecking occasionally with ongoing participants.

• With guidance from a law enforcement agency, the Watch trains its members in home security techniques, observation skills, and crime reporting. Residents also learn about the types of crime that affect the area.

• If you are ready to post Neighborhood Watch signs, check with law enforcement to see if they have such eligibility requirements as number of houses that participate in the program. Law enforcement may also be able to provide your program with signs. If not, they can probably tell you where you can order them.

• Organizers and block captains must emphasize that Watch groups are not vigilantes and do not assume the role of the police. They only ask neighbors to be alert, observant, and caring—and to report suspicious activity or crimes immediately to the police.

• The Watch concept is adaptable. There are Park Watches, Apartment Watches, Window Watches, Boat Watches, School Watches, Realtor Watches, Utility Watches, and Business Watches. A Watch can be organized around any geographic unit.

Phase Two: When the neighborhood decides to adopt the Watch idea, elect a chairperson.

Tips for Success

• Ask for block captain volunteers who are responsible for relaying information to members on their block, keeping up-to-date information on residents, and making special efforts to involve the elderly, working parents, and young people. Block captains also can serve as liaisons between the neighborhood and the police and communicate information about meetings and crime incidents to all residents.

• Consider linking with an existing organization, such as a citizens’ association, community development office, tenants’ association, housing authority.

• Establish a regular means of communicating with Watch members— e.g., newsletter, telephone tree, e-mall, fax, etc.

• Hold regular meetings to help residents get to know each other and to collectively decide upon program strategies and activities.

• Canvas door-to-door to recruit members.

• Involve everyone -- young and old, single and married, renter and homeowner.

• Gain support from the police or sheriffs' office. This is critical to a Watch group's credibility. These agencies are the major sources of information on local crime patterns, home security, other crime prevention education, and crime reporting.

• Get the information out quickly. Share all kinds of news -- quash rumors.

• Gather the facts about crime in your neighborhood. Check police reports, do victimization surveys, and learn residents' perceptions about crime. Often residents' opinions are not supported by facts, and accurate information can reduce fear of crime.

• Physical conditions like abandoned cars or overgrown vacant lots

contribute to crime. Sponsor cleanups, encourage residents to beautify the area, and ask them to turn on outdoor lights at night.

• It's essential to celebrate the success of the effort and recognize volunteers' contributions through such events as awards, annual dinners, and parties. To help meet community needs, Neighborhood Watches can sponsor meetings that address broader issues such as drug abuse, gangs, self-protection tactics, isolation of the elderly, crime in the schools, and rape prevention.

• Don't forget events like National Night Out or a potluck dinner that gives neighbors a chance to get together. Such items as pins, t-shirts, hats, or coffee mugs with the group's name also enhance identity and pride.

High School Mr. Jason Kurtz SDCTE Teacher Of The Year South Dakota Council of Teachers of English (SDCTE) announced Jason Kurtz of Harrisburg High School as South Dakota English Teacher of the Year at its state conference this weekend. Kurtz has been teaching for 15 years, both in the secondary classroom and post-secondary settings including University of Sioux Falls and Colorado Technical University. Kurtz is no stranger to SDCTE as he has presented a variety of topics, usually dealing with technology, at numerous state conferences. Jason is also the

current Vice President on the SDCTE Executive Board. Jason has attended and presented at National Council of Teachers of English conferences around the country, and he has presented as a member of the Young Adult Literature Symposium. In addition to these organizations, Kurtz is also a member of the National Education Association, the South Dakota Education Association, and the National Genealogical Society.

Harrisburg High School, You May Now Enter The Field In Competition JADYN ULRICH Everyone remembers “Last Years Band” as they march onto the field, clad in maroon and black. The stands remain loud and rambunctious; fans are preoccupied. Mosquitoes fly in swarms under the bright lights of the stadium. The drum majors raise their hands, and the band steps off, unrecognizable.

Classes for students this year started on the twenty-first of August, but the Harrisburg Marching Band has been working hard since the middle of July. With this being the first year of competitive marching, much more time and work has been put into the show.

Everything began with two weeks in the summer. The band would meet for eight hours every day, practicing their eight and a half minutes of music, memorizing drill charts, and remembering visuals.

The marching band continues their practice with two and a half hours every Tuesday and Thursday night. They’ll be attending five competitions around the region, as well as marching at the homecoming game on October 3rd.

The goal now is to not plateau at “good enough”, but to continue excelling forward.

Mrs. Tracy Kern SDACTE Teacher Of The Year The South Dakota Association for Career and Technical Education (SDACTE) is pleased to announce that Tracy Kern, family and consumer sciences teacher from Harrisburg High School is this year’s Teacher of the Year. During her 17 years of teaching, Mrs. Kern has exemplified the qualities of an outstanding teacher by updating her curriculum to meet the needs, interests, and career goals of her students. She makes sure that the career and technical education (CTE) classes she teaches are up-to-date and meet the South Dakota Department of Education requirements. She works with her the school administration to create long-range plans for shaping future CTE courses. In her career cluster and pathway courses, she makes it mandatory for all of her students to complete a job shadowing and career exploration unit. Her students take field trips to businesses and agencies that are relevant to each cluster/pathway course.

In her classroom, her students have access to up-to-date journal and magazine articles, videos, blogging and/or chatting capability, and project based learning tools. Through technology, students have used higher order skills of create, design, and develop from Bloom’s Taxonomy.

She has incorporated technology with project based learning instruction by using Garage Band to create financial podcasts for the Dave Ramsey Show, by using iMovie to develop a theorist puppet show, and by utilizing Apple Wiki server for creating a nutrition and wellness electronic portfolio.

Fortunately, Mrs. Kern has shared her expertise with other

teachers by presenting at numerous workshops and conferences such as the SDACTE Summer Conference, South Dakota Teaching Innovation in Education (TIE) Conference and the South Dakota Systems Change Conference. She also co-presented a workshop called “Career Cluster: from a Teacher’s Perspective” at the Vision Conference, at the South Dakota Board of Education Conference, and the National Career Cluster Institute Conference.

In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Mrs. Kern also advises the Harrisburg Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Chapter. Her members have created projects for STAR Events at the district, state, and national levels. They have demonstrated their commitment to the school and community by developing various community service projects . During the current school year, she is serving as the adviser to the state FCCLA president, Ashton Auch. This role has allowed her to serve on the South Dakota FCCLA Board of Directors and as the FCCLA Advisers I Action President. During the course of her teaching career, she has also served as the adviser to three other state officers and numerous state peer educators.

In one of her letters of recommendation, it was noted that Mrs. Kern “is a caring and compassionate leader, balancing her high expectations for students with understanding of their potential. She has no fear of attempting contemporary methods in search for the very best for each of her students. She leads by example and assists students to great heights in FCCLA activities and FACS courses.”

As recipient of the SDACTE Teacher of the Year award, Mrs. Kern received a plaque and a $300 stipend sponsored by Cenex Harvest States Foundation. During the 2015 SDACTE Conference in Watertown, she will receive complimentary lodging. In March of 2015, she has the opportunity to compete for Region V Teacher of the Year.

Leadership Class Does Community Service WYATT DEELSTRA AND KIAN WILCOX On October 14, 2014, the Leadership and Service Learning class spent the day volunteering at the VOA Day Center in Sioux Falls. Students spent the morning with 2 – 4 year olds monitoring outdoor play and joining the students in indoor activities such as puzzles, blocks, books and toys. The afternoon was spent helping the children relax in order to get ready for nap time and constructing two sandboxes that the children will be able to use in their outdoor playtime. A great day was had by all involved.

The leadership class is designed to help students build skills to understand themselves and develop skills to help them both lead and serve others.

An important skill is to recognize the need for serving others; therefore, students do a one-day service project each quarter.

Harrisburg Speaker Receives National Recognition Harrisburg High School Class of 2014 Graduate Tristan Chasing Hawk was notified this past October of being named a National Speech and Debate Association All-American for the 2013-14 academic year. At the end of each season of high school speech and debate only the top 25 national point leaders out of a field of more than 130,000 student members earn this coveted award.

Chasing Hawk competed all four years of high school for the Tigers in a variety of events. He competed in humorous, dramatic, and duo interpretation, reader’s theater, extemporaneous speaking, original oratory, Lincoln Douglas and public forum debate, and student congress. He also actively sought other forums to present his talent for talking, including the HHS HOSA Chapter, Poetry Out Loud, and South Dakota Voices for Children.

While competing he received numerous awards including recognition at speech and debate tournaments throughout the upper Midwest and at the SDHSAA state festival. He qualified for the national speech and debate tournament twice, once in dramatic interpretation and once in student congress.

“Tristan’s recognition as an All American is an acknowledgment of how talented he was but also how hard he worked”, stated HHS Debate Coach Dr. Kip McKee. “If there was a competition somewhere he would want to attend, and he would prepare like no other to make sure he was competitive at each contest. His dedication to the activity places him up there with the best in the country.”

HHS To Host State Debate Tournament The Harrisburg High School Speech and Debate team kicked off their season this November with tournaments in Watertown, Sioux Falls, Aberdeen and Mitchell. The team is excited to announce they will host the 2015 SDHSAA State Debate and Individual Event Tournament at HHS on March 6 & 7.

The team is looking for 50 - yes 50 - volunteers that would be willing to judge South Dakota’s best in their final meet of the season. The commitments are a 3-4 hour block of time on Friday night or a 3-4 hour block of time on Saturday morning. Training and food will be provided and the judging would be for public forum debate, a 40 minute round with a panel of three judges. FCCLA Members Enhance Leadership Skills At Leadership Weekend In Huron

SD FCCLA President Attends National Leadership Conference

Seventeen students from Harrisburg High School FCCLA joined 300 FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) fellow students from across the state in Huron on October 5-6 for the 2014 South Dakota FCCLA Fall Leadership Conference.

This year’s state theme is a Hunger Games rendition: A Tribute to Leadership.

This theme challenges students to look at their leadership skills, work to improve them, and perform “in the arena” – or today’s society.

Members attended three different trainings: Rookie Training, Power Training, and Peer Education Training. At Rookie Training, attendees were educated about the organization and its opportunities by the South Dakota State Officers. Each officer presented a workshop, with topics varying from public speaking, to fun facts about FCCLA, to interviews. At Power Training, led

by Nick Palkowski, members built upon previously acquired leadership skills by doing various workshops. At Peer Education Training, the elected South Dakota Peer Educators planned their year’s program of work.

FCCLA is the only youth-led organization with family as its central focus.

Members learn how to be active community leaders, become caring family members, and prepare for life beyond high school.

More than 7,000 Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) members, advisers, alumni, and guests from across the country gathered in San Antonio, Texas for the FCCLA 2014 National Leadership Conference. Ashton Auch, Harrisburg FCCLA Member and SD State FCCLA President, along with her mom Bonnie Auch and her advisor, Mrs. Tracy Kern, attended the meeting.

National Leadership Conference provided opportunities for students and advisers to come together for fun and to listen to inspiring speakers, as well as to expand their leadership skills, sharpen their talents and explore possible career pathways. The theme of this year’s conference was “SOAR” and attendees were challenged to go beyond what was expected of them to make lasting, positive impressions in their families, schools and communities.

“We were delighted to gather great speakers, leadership development initiatives and the energy of the thousands of students who came to San Antonio for this conference, but realize the best part is that these students will use the event as a platform to make a difference in their own cities and states when they return home,” said Sandy Spavone, executive director of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America Ashton represented the state of South Dakota during the Opening Ceremony and during STAR Events Award Ceremony. She also attended State Officer/Leadership Academy training. This training is a series of year-long leadership trainings which allow students to customize their leadership development journey by choosing courses that fit their needs and interests.

FCCLA offers over 30 Family and Consumer Sciences related events, also known as STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) events. These events include Culinary Arts, Knowledge Bowl, Career Investigation, and Fashion Construction to name a few. Members compete at the District, State and National level. This year, over 4200 STAR Event participants competed this week in San Antonio. This is the largest number of competitors at any National STAR Events competition!

Winter Driver Education To Be Offered RON HOLTEN, HARRISBURG DRIVER EDUCATION COORDINATOR & INSTRUCTOR Spring-term driver education will be offered again this winter. Unlike summer driver education, all students will have the opportunity to experience a wider range of driving situations involving driving in the dark and changing road conditions. Driving time will be postponed if school is canceled, after school activities are canceled, or the instructor deems it unsafe.

The deadline for Harrisburg High School spring term driver education registration is Friday, December 19. Registrations must be turned into the high school office along with payment or approved scholarship. Harrisburg students will be given first priority for the course – first-come, first serve. A minimum enrollment is needed for the class to go and enrollment may be capped, so register early.

There is a $250 fee for Harrisburg students and $350 fee for in-district residents but non-Harrisburg students. Scholarships are available to students eligible for free-and-reduced lunch; applications can be obtained by emailing kevin.lein@k12.sd.us. Scholarships are approved at the discretion of the principal. Check the Harrisburg High School website for a registration form.

The student must be age 14 by July 1, 2015. An instruction permit is not required to take the course. There will be 30 hours of required classroom instruction and six hours of required behind-the-wheel (BTW) instruction.

The classroom session will meet 3:20 to 6:20 pm, from January 5 to January 16, Monday through Friday, at the high school. BTW instruction will be by arrangement starting January 26. BTW consists of two students, each

driving two hours each day, for three consecutive school days. The students will be picked up after school at their school.

The course will be graded pass/fail. Students passing the course will receive a certificate indicating their successful completion of the program and .25 of high school credit (this does not factor into student GPA).

There is a limit of two misses and all absences must be made up. Excused absences include Illness, extreme emergency, and instructor-approved for a school activity. Classroom absences will be made up January 20 23. In the event a driving time will be missed, the student must give the instructor 24 hours notice. If notice is not given, a student may forfeit the opportunity to pass the course.

Harrisburg High School Girls Fastpitch Softball The Harrisburg High School Girls Fastpitch softball team recently finished up an exciting season. We had 20 players this year that competed at the Junior Varsity (JV) and Varsity level. It is only the second year that Harrisburg has been able to field two teams like this without a coop from surrounding schools. The JV finished the year with a record of 10-6 and a strong finish in the JV State tournament held in Sioux Falls.

On the mound the JV team was led by Ivory denHoed and Kylie Berndt.

Offensive leaders for the JV this year were Audra Nickel, Alexandra Lindner, Madison Corcoran, Hallie Sagness, and Shelby Brodkorb. The Varsity took steps forward this year improving to a 6-11 record overall and a 5th place finish at the state tournament. The Tigers played well with a very tough schedule this year, highlighted with a dramatic 5-4 win vs. 3 time defending champion West Central during the regular season.

The Tigers had two All State selections this year, and they are Sr., Mallory Lanier and Jr., Aanna Okerlund. Honorable Mention All State honors went to Sr., Brooke Severy, and So. Steph Gabel. Winter Sports Student/Parent Meeting JOEY STRUWE, ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR There will be a student/parent winter sports meeting on Monday November 10 at 6:30 p.m. In the high school PAC. This meeting is for parents and students in grades 9-12 interested in participating in boys and girls basketball, wrestling and cheerleading. North Middle School

State Adopts New Physical Education Standards TAMMY HOFER

In September of 2014, the South Dakota Department of Education adopted a new set of K-12 Physical Education Standards. At the middle school level, we are excited to see that the state is building in more of a lifetime fitness approach to the new standards.

In addition to learning a variety of fitness terms and skills, our middle school students will still be working on refining their basic motor skills, working on understanding different team sports (included is good sportsmanship and team work), and will have some class time devoted to nutrition. Last year at the North Middle School, we started to promote a life time fitness feel in our PE classes and it is great to see that this trend can continue.

As 6th graders, our students will get a basic understanding of the different fitness components and will keep progressing to the point that by the time they are 8th graders, they will be asked to write their own personal workout plan.

This is a really exciting time as we will be getting to see our students start to take ownership of their own fitness and health goals. We hope that as a school community (parents, students, teachers, food service, etc.), we can work together to help our children develop healthy habits that will last them a lifetime.

Recap On Challenge Day MOD/CL Question & Answer Session For 8th Grade Parents November 5th, 6th (during conferences), 11th and 19th 5:00 -7:00

KRISTA GROENEWEG On September 9, North MS hosted a Challenge Day for 100 of our 7th and 8th grade students. Challenge Day’s mission is to, “provide youth and their communities with experiential programs that demonstrate the possibility of love and connection through the celebration of diversity, truth, and full expression.” The day was full of excitement. There were a lot times filled with laughter and some times of tears. To quote 8th grade students Nick and Payton, «Students and adults were able to see that none of us are alone...that we are all in this together.» We learned to be Hug dealers and the importance of being there for one another.

We have seen “Be the Change” extend beyond Challenge day. Some examples are a group of 8th graders writing positive post-it notes to all of the 8th grade class and posting them anonymously.

Mrs. Snyder and Mr. Stewart are starting a group of Challenge day students known as G2. The first project they are tackling is Pay It Forward. This is a student led group and we are excited to see the impact that this group will have on our school. Please continue to watch us on Facebook to stay informed.

Senator John Thune Visits Harrisburg’s 8th Graders!

ALYSSA PERSSON AND TAMRA HUFFMAN Senator John Thune took some time out of his busy schedule to stop by the North Middle School and visit with North and South’s 8th graders. American History is the focus for 8th grade social studies so Miss Persson and Mrs. Huffman, 8th grade history teachers, thought it was the perfect opportunity for their students to get introduced to government.

Senator Thune’s main message was making smart choices and being a good citizen.

One way to stay positive is leading a life with great character. 8th grade is the time in life where important decisions will be made that can influence a person’s individual journey.

A person giving 100% in their journey will lead a more healthy and productive life.

Senator Thune also answered questions from the audience that ranged from what his job consisted of to a possible run for president. Students were interested in knowing how Thune became interested in politics, and he responded by telling the story of how he met his mentor, Senator Jim Abdnor. Using his beloved game of basketball as a metaphor, Thune articulated the need to constantly improve upon oneself – whether it is for a free throw percentage, or anything else students choose to do in life.

Overall, the students really enjoyed the time they spent with Senator John Thune. Miss Persson and Mrs. Huffman also look forward to recapping the Senator’s message in their own classrooms when they present their units on civics, government, and citizenship. The Senator’s visit was a nice additional supplement to the history curriculum and everyone was pleased that it worked out to meet one of our representatives from Congress.

Our Fall Parent/Teacher conferences are scheduled for Thursday, November 6 from 2:00-8:30. Conferences will be scheduled with your student’s advisor and held in the advisor’s classroom. Each conference will last approximately fifteen minutes and will involve your student leading a formal discussion regarding his/her performance in each class. In addition, you may also schedule appointments to speak with your student’s other teachers if you desire more information regarding a specific class.

South Middle School has welcomed a new face to the music department this year! We welcome Mrs. Randi Van Der Sloot as the new SMS Choir Director and 7th grade music enrichment teacher. Prior to joining us, she taught at O’Gorman, and she has worked with middle school choirs, high school choirs, and show choirs. She is excited to lead SMS music students to excellence in music!

The student-led conference format provides a platform that empowers students in leading the conversation regarding their academic performance and in establishing goals to continue their progress. Your student will be working hard to prepare for his/her conference by learning presentation skills to lead the discussion. Your son/daughter will review his or her current grades, highlight successes, identify areas for growth, and discuss specific academic goals they would like to accomplish moving forward.

This process is intended help your student self-evaluate his/her overall performance in school with the guidance of their advisory teacher.

8th Grade Happenings TONYA MILLER Once again, Harrisburg South Middle School had the privilege of Outdoor Campus coming to us. The students had a great time learning about latitude and longitude. We also learned how to use GPS devices. After we had this figured out, we headed outside to put our knowledge into practice. We hid film canisters with groups’ names included inside. The group would mark their position; trade GPS devices with another group and start the scavenger hunt. We also enjoy our time with Pat and can’t wait to have Outdoor Campus back again.

The Secret Life Of A South 6th Grader DARREN ELLWEIN Viewing Jessarae in the classroom and hallway, a person would have no idea how accomplished she is outside of school. She doesn’t draw any attention to her life on the shooting range. Jess is a prolific archer. This year alone she has won three national championships, two indoor and one outdoor. In February she competed in the Vegas World Archery Festival with over 50 competitors in her age category from around the world. The result…World Champion! “It’s a mental game. You have to handle a lot of responsibility when making adjustments from site to site.”

In back-to-back events this summer, Jess shot over 2,700 arrows in 10 days. Like golf, she moves from site to site, adjusting to conditions and new targets. This year alone she competed in twelve competitions, winning nine of them. When asked about her friends at school, she commented, “It’s like I live in two worlds.

I have my school friends and my archery friends. One friend through archery lives in South Africa.”

You are maybe wondering as I did about her future goals.

“Short term is to get the silver pin in Junior Olympic Archery Development. My long term goal is to go to the Olympics,” commented Jessarae. Currently, she meets with an Olympic

The 7th and 8th grade band has already had one successful performance this year with the Homecoming Parade. They performed an arrangement of “Any Way You Want It,” while learning about parade marching fundamentals and technique.

The South Middle School band and choirs are now working hard and preparing for their Winter Concerts. The Winter Choral Concert will be held on Monday, December 8th at the Performing Arts Center. The Winter Band Concert will be held on Monday, December 15th at the Performing Arts Center. Students should arrive in concert dress by 6:30pm and meet in the high school band and choir rooms for warm up, with each concert beginning at 7:00pm. We hope to see you there!

SMS FACS The SMS Encore FACS students and Mrs. Rombough have been busy exploring a variety of areas of Family & Consumer Sciences. In 6th grade FACS we recently looked at what skills make a dependable and caring childcare provider / babysitter.

In addition to individual and group work, the students were able to test out a variety of toys and activities and determine age appropriateness and safety.

7th grade Encore FACS focused on food and kitchen safety. Students were able to gain hands-on experience in the foods lab preparing a variety of items including quick breads and smoothies. They also identified traits of effective leaders and, in pairs, created & presented a leadership newscast. This was a fun activity and the students showed a lot of creativity in their work describing positive leaders.

8th grade FACS had the opportunity to look at career exploration through use of the online simulation THE REAL GAME. In this experience, students explore their wants and needs, role play an occupation and gain a better understanding of employability skills. A special thank you to Adam Learing, from STEMFuse , LLC of Brandon, SD and Mrs. Atwood for being guest speakers in the class.

In every one of our buildings, we have interesting stories and students like this. Taking the time to visit with Jess during lunch led to a hidden gem of conversation. She continues to maintain a low-key attitude about her skill, but now she will have a few more cheerleaders for her future competitions.

Endeavor Elementary Generous Hearts Build New Club LISA NORRIS Thanks to the generous donations of several caring people, a new Enrichment Club was formed at Endeavor Elementary. “LEGO Quest” has begun constructing master builders after school. This new club is for first –fifth graders, who want to use their imagination and creativity to build something that will help them become master builders. Each month the builders will go on a new quest and share with the group what they have created. The students are learning a plethora of skills while participating in this new adventure.

Listening In On Kate DiCamillo JEN SEVOLD, ENDEAVOR LIBRARIAN AIDE On September 25, 2014, the third and fourth graders at Endeavor had the opportunity to pack into the library and watch a live webcast of author Kate DiCamillo as she was speaking to a crowd of students in Brookings, SD. She is best known for writing; Mercy Watson, Bink and Gollie, Flora & Ulysses, Because of Winn-Dixie, The Tale of Despereaux, and The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane.

Students were able to hear stories of her childhood, how she became a writer, how many rejection letters she got before getting her big break, and what her favorite book was. She was born in Philadelphia but moved to Florida when she was five years old due to her health. Her parents thought the warmer weather would help but she continued to struggle. Reading helped her pass the time during her stays in the hospital or while she was at home getting over her illnesses.

In college, she knew she wanted to be a writer. She dressed the part wearing black turtleneck sweaters but never actually wrote. It was later when she was 30 that she began writing soon after moving to Minneapolis, MN. Her first book was Because of Winn-Dixie.

Freedom Elementary Clubs After the final bell rings, the hallways fill with students as they file out the doors on their way home after a long day of learning at school. But there are a growing number of kids who have elected to stay after school and participate in one or more of the four extra-curricular clubs offered at Freedom this year.

One of those clubs offered is the Lego Club headed by 5th grade teacher Mr. Muth. There will be two six-week sessions for students in 2nd-5th grade. The first session will start either on November 10th or the following week depending on the success of the Harrisburg High School football team. And then after winter break, the second session will start on January 5th. This club will allow students to use their imagination to create and accomplish a variety of challenges using the greatest toy ever invented....the LEGO. “For children who like to build, I believe that Lego bricks have a universal appeal and influence. Lego has a number of appealing options for the elementary age range and beyond,” Mr. Muth said in an interview with me earlier in the year.

This marks the 3rd year for Chess Club at Freedom. Mr. Knips, technology integrationist, is again leading the club for students in 1st-5th grade. The fall session is just underway and there are 25 students participating. “It’s great to have so many kids interested in the game,” remarked Mr. Knips, “Chess is sometimes thought of as a game for adults, but students of all ages can learn to play and practice critical thinking.” At the beginning of the year, students follow along as Mr. Knips teaches them about all the chess pieces and how they move. They then transition into strategy and positioning. At the end of the semester, Chess Club players take on some of our K-5 teachers in our annual Freedom Chess Showdown. They conclude the year with a friendly, but competitive chess tournament with awards going to the winner of each bracket.

The art club at Freedom is also beginning its third year. Megan Siegle, Freedom’s art teacher, is again leading the club, which is being offered to students in third through fifth grade. With over forty students participating in one of the two sessions offered, the club is doing very well. “It’s been great to have an opportunity for enrichment in the visual arts for those students who are very passionate about creating. Art club offers students an experience to work more collaboratively and to establish a sense of comradery amongst each other, which is such a vital part of building an arts

community. I love to see the kids get excited and inspired by each other as they work,” remarked Ms. Siegle. Art club offers a variety of activities that extend beyond the regular art classroom experience including: T-shirt tie dying, sketchbook-making, building on more advanced clay techniques, as well as some form of a group mural. In the past, the art club has created crayon meltings, experimented with printmaking, and painted pumpkins. “Art club offers students a unique opportunity to be more independent in the direction of their art making. My hope is to instill in my students a sense of what it really means to think and create like an artist, so that they may independently pursue their interests and curiosities through the creation of art,” commented Ms. Siegle about her mission in creating the club. She hopes to be able to take the art club on a field trip out into the community throughout the semester to see professional artists at work, and to expose students to the broader community of artists.

A new addition to the Freedom Club’s is the Freedom Drum Club, Milele Muziki (Forever Music). Ms. Nelson is in her second year at Freedom and in her first session of Drum Club. 30 students were introduced in a 5-week mini-session last year and this year 15 students are enjoying the art of world drumming. Drum Club offers students the opportunity to work together and explore their creativity. “Not only are students learning the drums, they are experiencing music in a different way,” says Ms. Nelson.

“Music makes students smarter. Drumming alone engages both the left (linear) and right (creative) sides of the brain.” Studies have shown that drumming not only improves IQ scores for students, but improves social skills, such as teamwork, self-esteem, and discipline. Drum Club will be offering performance opportunities such as, Invite-Your-Teacher day and a performance at the Freedom Elementary Talent Show.

Mrs. Pederson would like to thank the teachers for volunteering to lead the clubs: “We are very fortunate to have teachers that love what they do, are willing to put in extra time, and want to devote their energy into developing our students’ talents and interests.” She would also like to thank the Freedom PTO for helping to sponsor the clubs, “The Freedom PTO has been very generous in helping with supplies to help jump start and maintain our school clubs.”

Harrisburg Firefighters visited Freedom Elementary Kindergarten for Fire Prevention Week

Professional Climber Speaks To Students “It’s kind of like running a marathon every day for two or three weeks”, remarked Jeff Mathy while sharing with the Tiger Reserve students about the physical requirements of climbing the highest mountain on each continent. That’s running 26.2 miles every day for 21 straight days but not really out of the ordinary for this young man who was attempting to become the youngest person to scale the Seven Summits. Training physically for this feat started about 10 years after his first backpacking trip as young Boy Scout- which he says he hated. He kept going out on expeditions though and each one got easier and more fun. Soon he was hooked on mountaineering. He set a goal to climb Kilimanjaro in Africa and made it. Then he focused on summiting Acongagua in South America and Denali in Alaska. He knew that to meet these goals he needed to train full-time. He started training six days a week by running outside hauling a weighted sled and carrying an 80 pound backpack while climbing a Stairmaster. This fitness program got him strong enough to handle the demands on his body but the weather and the altitude of the mountain tops posed additional challenges. On Everest the Khumbu Icefall was “like a carnival ride without the fun” , stated Mathy. It required eight long hours to navigate and had to be done six times while climbing the South Face. The temperatures on some summits varied 100 degrees depending on the weather patterns and the winds can literally blow people off the mountain. Even “camping out” while climbing a high altitude mountain becomes a physical challenge. When you are at an altitude above 12,000 feet the thin air stresses your body and makes even simple tasks like clipping into your carabiner or locating your gloves very difficult. Climbing the Seven Summits is something Jeff Mathy says any healthy person can do if they are willing to train and push themselves to their limits both mentally and physically. The Tiger Reserve students were enthralled with his story and felt Jeff Mathy showed both mental and physical courage while on his quest to climb the Seven Summits. Tiger Reserve students at Liberty & Endeavor have been engaged in a Unit of Study focused on Courage for about eight weeks.

Journey Elementary A Journey Back In History For 4th Graders MRS. DANAE WIEKING, MR. JASON LARSEN, AND MRS. DANA HONNER, JOURNEY ELEMENTARY 4TH GRADE TEACHING TEAM The 4th graders from Journey Elementary had special speakers, Kevin Gansz and Jill Van Velduizen from the Old Court House Museum come and present their show-and-tell program on September 23. The reason for their visit was because for the past several weeks 4th graders from Journey Elementary have been learning about trading and bartering in the early 1800’s. Students also learned about supply and demand along with transportation and communication during this time period. Since the students had been studying about the early 1800’s the artifacts were all taken from that time period. The museum did an outstanding job of bringing history to life in the classroom through the artifact-show-and-tell program. Recommended for all ages!

An “Apple A Day” The Kindergarten Way! MRS. LISA LARSON AND MRS. MACKENZIE JENSEN, JOURNEY KINDERGARTEN TEACHERS Kindergarteners in KJL spent the past two weeks studying apples. We did a wide variety of cross-curricular activities with this beloved fruit! In Math, the kids taste tested yellow, green and red apples, then graphed the results of their favorites. In Science, students used the parts of the apple to do a sink and float activity. They found that the whole apple, 1/2 an apple and the peelings float, while the seeds sink. During Writing, students made a family apple tree and wrote each family member’s name on an apple. This was a great way to get to know their classmates even better! One of the favorite art projects was cutting an apple horizontally, finding the star shape in the middle, then stamping it in red paint to make a little apple book. The culminating activity was making apple sauce. The kids got to help with the whole process: peeling, slicing, adding ingredients, stirring and waiting for the delicious treat to cook all day. Kindergarteners LOVED the homemade applesauce they had made. Learning about apples was a fun, exciting, and educational couple of weeks in Kindergarten!
