ne of the very difficult challenges that the Harrisburg School has is to get out messages and announcements to our community. Without a true weekly local newspaper dedicated solely to the Harrisburg School Community, we find that people often say they were not informed about important events or announcements. I

t is a rainy Monday in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Vivien and I sit by the window in a downtown coffee shop. Vivien Voigt, a junior at Harrisburg High School, is studying here as a foreign exchange student all the way from Germany. We drink our coffees and talk about her life here in America. After being asked what made her decide to come to America, Vivien holds her warm coffee in her hands, looks down, smiles and says, “ I have always dreamed of spending a year in another country and experiencing life in a different culture. The United States always fascinated me because everything “cool” seems to come from here, all the movies, music, clothing lines, etc, so I was curious to know how the real American life beyond that really is.” This is not Vivien’s first time here in America. She says, “I have been to America before when I drove over with my aunt from Canada to Buffalo, NY, for one day. I loved the States right from the beginning, and I was sure that I wanted to come back one day. So I did. I have traveled to a couple European countries like England, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Slovakia, etc. and outside of Europe I have been to Egypt, Canada and the Caribbean. I love traveling and exploring different countries!”

Her favorite thing about America is the mentality of the people, “People here are just so friendly and open, which made it a lot easier at the beginning. I love that people just do nice things for each other like giving compliments and so on. That makes the daily life just so much nicer.”

W

e began to talk about school and her first impression of everything. “In comparison to my hometown, which has about 70,000 inhabitants, Harrisburg is pretty small, but I like it anyways. The people are really nice and I like that it is so close to Sioux Falls, where I hang out with my friends all the time. Harrisburg High School is just an awesome school, and I am so happy and proud that I can call it my school. I felt welcome and accepted right from the first day, and I love the school spirit, where even teachers dress up for Homecoming. so well and they generally do not judge each other much. That just makes you feel really good and accepted. People that go to Harrisburg might see that differently, but that is what I have noticed in contrast to my German school. The teachers are all really downto earth and I like that you can talk to them about everything.”

I was curious to know how school differed in Germany, “School is very different in Germany; we, for example, have different schedules everyday and we do not have the “fun classes” such as Photography, Drama, or Interior Design. Another difference I have noticed is that it is a lot more work to do here because in Germany, we do not have a lot of homework or tests. We have one or two exams a semester and rarely any tests or quizzes. In America all your assignments get graded, where as in Germany only your participation in class is graded. It is not harder or easier, the focus just lays elsewhere.”

A

s the coffee shop started to close, we had to wrap up our conversation. I was able to ask her a few more questions. “I am really looking forward to learning more about America and to go home, being able to say I have made the most out of this experience. I also love when people ask me about Germany; I can help to clear up potential prejudices and be a representative of my culture. Above all, I am looking forward to exploring new places and meeting new people.” I asked if she plans to be back in America after high school and about her life goals. “I am definitely planning to come back, and I hope I will be able to study at one of the great Art Schools here in America, as I want to become an Interior Designer.”

W

e were deep into conversation; we never noticed the lights turned off. “Ladies, we are about to head out.” The workers had their coats on and were waiting for us to leave. I had learned a very important lesson from Vivien that day. I learned there is a whole world out there waiting for you.

A

s Harrisburg High School’s growth continues, there is no doubt that our students will have to continue to work hard in order to obtain the success in different organizations and athletics alike. More students means more competition. For example, this year, as in past years, at times maybe 20 people will be trying to obtain an office in clubs like FFA or Student Council, and obviously only a select few obtain those positions. If our school was to double or triple in size, a student’s ability to stand out in a group will be much more competitive. Not to say it isn’t possible. It is.

for students to participate in. In the past year, HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) and DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) started in our school, each gaining prospective students in the group’s area of expertise. Groups like FFA (Future Farmers of America), FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America), and Student Council continued to grow. The question really i s , with a

growing school, are we able to keep up?

W

e notice with other schools at conferences or events, Harrisburg almost always is the school that brings two times as many students as the other schools. With this growth, students may have to work harder to shine in sports and stand out among their prospects. It is this way in all activities. This growth can be seen as a positive because it will only bring more talent to an already talented group of students. Our district and schools have prepared to take on such challenges that many districts could only hope for. In the meantime, our students will continue to work hard to shine and be the best we can be.

H

arrisburg has grown tremendously over the past few years. Our school district used to consist of one building of K-12 students with plenty of growing room.

This building is now Liberty Elementary in Harrisburg. With Harrisburg increasing in size by the next couple of years, the community decided to move the high school students to a building of their own, which is now Harrisburg Middle School South. Once the number of middle school students and elementary students started becoming overwhelming, they decided to add on to the “High School” (South Middle School) and move the eighth grade students to a newly added wing.

W

ith more and more elementary and middle school students attending Harrisburg, the community had to make a decision to either move the middle school students in with the high school students or completely build another school. The community and school board had decided that with all the students that plan on attending Harrisburg in the future, that they better have enough room to fit the students comfortably. After crunching the numbers, they had come to the conclusion that a new high school needed to be built, with room to grow.

noticed that the elementary school had become very cramped, meaning that Harrisburg needed yet another elementary school.

This one, though, needed to be for the kids who lived closer to Sioux Falls. The School Board then split the district in half and sent the in-town kids to what is called Liberty Elementary, and the kids that live closer to Sioux Falls attended Explorer Elementary.

bigger! The district was again split into three parts. The intown kids would remain going to Liberty, but the Sioux Falls kids were split in half.

One half that lived closer to Explorer would attend there and the other half would attend the new school called Journey Elementary. Again a short year after that Liberty Elementary began to get cramped again so Harrisburg built another elementary in town. This one was called Freedom Elementary. Most in-town kids picked whether they wanted to go to the new school or stay at the old one.

W

ith all these elementary schools, how were they all going to fit into one middle school? That is when the next two schools were put into action. The community and school bard decided to build a new middle school on the outside of Sioux Falls and called is Harrisburg Middle School North. All kids that live close to Middle School North would attend there. With another middle school being added, they might as well build another elementary school, and that is exactly what happened. The new school is called Endeavor. Harrisburg has dramatically grown over the years, and there are no signs of it stopping anytime soon.

arrisburg is now up to five elementary schools, two middle schools, and a high school. It is now one of the largest school districts in the state and is rated number three in the top schools of the state.

This year’s 8th Grade class is over double the size of the senior class.

This year’s 1st Grade class is over three times the size of the senior class.

Since the 2007-08 school year, the district’s population has nearly doubled.

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS FAST PITCH SOFTBALL SUBMITTED BY: COACH KEN LANIER

T

he Harrisburg High School Girls Fast pitch softball team recently finished up an exciting season. We had 20 players this year that competed at the Junior Varsity (JV) and Varsity level. It is the first time Harrisburg has been able to field two teams like this without a co-op from surrounding schools. The JV finished the year with a record of 12-5-1 and a 3rd place finish in the JV State tournament held in Sioux Falls on Sept 28th/29th. Leading the way for the Tigers offensively were Stephanie Gabel and Alexandra “Boogie” Lindner with .481 batting average, and 22 runs scored respectively. On the mound the JV team was led

by Jalena Smallfield and Lexi Kono.

A

t the varsity level things were a little more difficult, but the kids played and worked hard throughout the season.

We finished with an overall record of 4-13, but peaked at the right time winning 4 of our last 6 contests and wound up finishing 5th in the state tournament in Sioux Falls on Oct 5th/6th. It was a cold/wet weekend but the girls persevered after losing the opening round game to Lennox, by beating Tea, Dakota Valley, and Douglas in succession before succumbing to Lennox again 3-2 in a hard fought well played contest. The SD All State selections for the Tigers are Seniors Korissa Lindner and Kianna Smallfield. Honorable Mention All State honors went to Junior, Brooke Severy, and Sophomore Anna Okerlund. Congratulations to all players on a fantastic season!

N

ow that the volleyball season is winding down, we are focusing on getting these last couple of wins. With few games left, we would love getting as much support as we can get from the fans.

Senior night was the 25th of October; the game started at 7pm at home vs. Brookings. The next two games were away with Pierre and Watertown.

W

e had been working together to better ourselves for these last games. We were pulling together to communicate more and cover our hitters. Our team has had a roller coaster year, but we are hoping that we are on an upward climb that will take us into districts.

The schools that are in Harrisburg’s district are Washington, Lincoln, Yankton, and Brandon Valley. With some tough competition, our volleyball team will have to rally together to play to our full potential.

ight now the Harrisburg Tiger football team is near a 500 record; it’s not as good as we have wanted it to be, but we know what we need to work on. We need to get our offense clicking a little more and to score on every drive.

Our defense is doing pretty well so far, hindering some major plays of our opponents. The last game of the regular season is against Brandon, and then we move on to playoffs. We hope to finish strong and come out with some W’s.

ctober has been an incredibly successful month for the Harrisburg Student Council filled with many activities and fundraising opportunities. The month began with the Olympic themed homecoming which fostered school spirit and included Olympic decorations, fun dress up days, Olympic ceremonies, tiger Olympics, and ended with a dance. However, Students Council’s greatest achievement during homecoming was raising over $8,000 through the tiger variety show, tiger jersey sales, and sucker sales to be donated back to the community.

tudent Council also partnered with FFA and FCCLA in our annual “Rake the Town” event. Together, we raked the lawns of those unable to do so and cleared the Harrisburg city parks of their leaves.

This was the second annual “Rake the Town” and Student Council looks forward to continuing this partnership and donation in the future.

pcoming events for Student Council include the Haunted House that will be hosted at Nov. 1 in Freedom Elementary School. The house opens at 7 p.m. and will include a spooky tours and activities.

The haunted house is recommended for all ages.

outh Dakota FCCLA’s members “Discovered their Superpowers” at the recent Leadership Weekend on October 5th and 6th at the Crossroads Hotel in Huron, SD. 211 students and 33 advisers from across the state attended Rookie Camp, Power Training, or Peer Education Training. 2013-14 State FCCLA Officers led the Rookie Training. They spoke about National Programs, Star Events and taught students the basic information about FCCLA. Rookie Training attendees received the Step One Membership Award at the conference. Trent Misak, former National Officer conducted Power Training.

He incorporated dynamic leadership activities and games into his presentation that expanded students’ knowledge of FCCLA. Peer Education team members had their first meetings together and each team identified their state projects.

The Community peer education team planned projects to support the National FCCLA Outreach Project, Share Our Strength. The Family team will be working with one of the National FCCLA educational partners, Autism Speaks, to bring awareness to autism issues. And finally, the Career peer education team members are planning a year-long drive to support Ronald McDonald houses in South Dakota.

n Friday, October 18th the FFA hosted a chili feed before the Harrisburg-Yankton football game. With all the help from many members and parents we served 198 adults and children. We also served 28 gallons of chili, and even more pans of bars. This event helped not only the community, but it helped the older members meet the younger members. The normal participants for our activities were there which made things even more enjoyable.

long with the chili feed at the front doors we had a fruit sales table for people to buy fruit and help raise money for the chapter. Personally I think the night was fun.

Meeting new people is always a good time.

As a chapter we raised over $1015. This will go to help pay for national convention and other activities that the chapter may want to do in the future. Overall it was a chilly night that was fit for a warm bowl of chili and conversation.

FFA - MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE SUBMITTED BY: ALLIE FLANDERS

T

here are many clubs and school activities to be involved with throughout your high school career, except, the only way you know about them is through daily announcements saying, “Don’t forget, there’s a HOSA meeting during SAT!” or “Band and Choir students, get your New York trip permission slips turned into the office.”

Well, now is your chance to join something big! This is something that you can use in your future and follow it throughout every step you take. It is a little something I like to call FFA. Now, many of you know it as Future Farmers of America, but that doesn’t mean we are only made for farmers and do farmer activities. We do all kinds of productive activities that can make a huge benefit in your life and an impact to another life, farmer or not. In fact, we have more people that don’t know anything about farming than those that do know.

H

ere at Harrisburg High School, we have one of the largest FFA chapters in the state of South Dakota. When you take an Ag class with Mr. Marks, you are automatically considered a participant of the FFA chapter.

An Ag class can range from welding, to animal science, to leadership class, and even the basics of shop mechanics. FFA is a whole world full of craziness, and when I say crazy, I mean crazy! For starters, we have what we call spring and fall CDE’s. CDE stands for Career Development Event, and this is where you compete in competitions with people from all over the district, to national levels. The fall CDE’s are based upon leadership, speaking, real world skills (such as job interview), broadcasting, ag issues, and plenty more. The spring CDE’s are focused on hands-on skills that you can use in a work force. This would include horse evaluation, mechanics, milk quality, agronomy, floriculture, and so many more!

If you do well enough, you have the

opportunity to move to state level, and onto national level. With these competitions, comes a lot of traveling, which is the bet part! State is held at SDSU in the month of April. Nationals, which rotates form Indianapolis, IN, to Louisville KY, is held at the end of October.

T

raveling and competing isn’t all what we get to do, though. FFA has fruit sale fundraising, community service, projects, and chances to win money! I won $150 at state my junior year, and two other students, who graduated from Harrisburg, were given the opportunity to travel to Costa Rica the same way I won. There are numerous opportunities when you join FFA that the possibilities are endless! FFA is a great program to be involved in, whether you are a farmer or not. Oh, and don’t forget that it looks good on college applications in the future! Good luck, and hope to see you soon.

To top it off, our four officers and some of our member-leaders are heading to the South Dakota HOSA Fall Leadership Conference on October 30th.

SOUTH MIDDLE SCHOOL FROM THE OFFICE…

hat a great first quarter we have had at Harrisburg South Middle School! We have been stressing to the students, the importance of having all their materials for class and not being tardy. As part of our P.B.I.S. (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) we had a surprise “Karaoke Hour” in Directed Studies for students who did not have any tardies from September 30 through October 15. The students were given passes in the morning and were surprised to have a fun afternoon of music and fellowship.

uring the week of October 21, HSMS celebrated Red Ribbon Week, the nations’ oldest and most celebrated substance abuse prevention campaign. We celebrated with dress up days, scavenger hunts and most importantly students signing pledges to remain drug and alcohol free. (See attached photos.)

he student council will be hosting a school dance on Friday, November 22. We will be trying something a little different and having the dance from 3:15-5:30. The students that attend will need to be picked up from school at 5:30. The cost of the dance is $4.00 or $3.00 plus a canned food item.

6TH GRADE SOUTH MIDDLE SCHOOL

he 2013-2014 school year is off to a great start. We have enjoyed teaching this year’s group of 6th grade students, and we look forward to continued fun and success. As we finish the first quarter of this school year, the 6th grade teachers want to remind parents of the many tools they have to keep connected with the school and make some recommendations for parent-teacher conferences.

n November 7, we will have parent-teacher conferences. Our conferences will be student-led, meaning that the students will lead the discussion between parents and teachers. During advisory, students will reflect on the first quarter of this school year to prepare for this night. Students and parents will be meeting with the student’s advisory teacher. If parents would like to meet with another teacher, please e-mail or call that teacher to find an available time for this meeting.

S

urprisingly, first quarter of 7th grade is coming to an end. We have been working hard using the SpringBoard curriculum.

SpringBoard aligns the Common Core standards to what the students are reading and writing. It will help our students get ready for the Smarter Balance Assessment that they will be taking in the spring in place of the Dakota Step Test.

ecently, we started reading The Outsiders. The students really seem to be interested in the story. We will be working on this for the next two weeks, finishing up on November 1.

T

he first unit, we worked on writing a personal narrative about a memory and a choice. We worked a lot on editing and revising our writing. The students used their memory writing and illustrated it on a quilt square. Miss Olson’s mom will end up putting them all together to create a class quilt.

N

ext, we started reading stories dealing with the Greek gods.

Some of these stories were about the creation of the sun, moon, stars, and spiders. The students seemed to be very interested in these. To sum up this unit, the students worked in pairs to create their own graphic novel that explained a natural phenomenon. All of the time, effort, and hard work, paid off for some really creative projects.

iddle school band students have had a busy fall, with 3 performances already! This year, there are a total of 198 students in band in grades 6, 7 and 8! 7th and 8th grade band students from both North and South Middle Schools performed in the Homecoming parade, in addition to traveling to Chester, SD for the Lake Area Festival of Bands on October 4th. The Fall Music Showcase on October 19th was also a success.

ooking ahead, the South Middle School band students will be performing their first formal concert on Tuesday, November 19th at the High School PAC. The North Middle School band concert will be held on Tuesday, December 10th at 7pm in the North Auditorium. Ms. Elizabeth Ennenga is the band director at South, and Mr. Joel Shotwell is the band director at North.

8TH GRADE HAPPENINGS

T

he English Language Arts scholars of Harrisburg South Middle School have been engaged in literary analysis over the classic, young adult novel The Giver. Throughout the course of this inspiring unit, students have considered many of the social ills affecting our global community and brainstormed ideas for combating these problems to improve society as a whole. In addition, students have been introduced to a new grammar program, Giggles in the Middle, that incorporates riveting and entertaining examples of vocabulary, writing, and grammar to improve student writing.

W

e have been working on multimedia tools in Computer class.

We started with Prezi. This is an interactive presentation tool that is pleasing to eye and is web-based. Using this tool allows students to create a presentation on one computer and finish it on another computer anywhere they have Internet access. There is no need to attach and email it to share with one person or another.

They simply use the Share feature and it is now accessible by the recipient. From here we will work on other multimedia tools such as Powerpoint and Keynote.

f fencing costs $35.68 per foot, do you know how much it would cost to build a fence around a square yard that has an area of 144 square feet? If not, ask an 8th grade math student. Students have been working with exponents and examining the concepts of area and volume. Working to build upon their algebraic thinking, students have used their knowledge of exponent relationships and exponential properties to also explore the concept of Scientific Notation.

cience class has been working on rocks and minerals. We also had Outdoor Campus come visit us. The kids spent the class period outside on a scavenger hunt learning compass skills and orienteering. The students had a great time and worked up a sweat. We have been identifying rocks and learning the difference between igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks. They also presented their rock cycle song and they rocked on!! Physical science has been imploding cans, compressing marshmallows and expanding balloons. NORTH MIDDLE SCHOOL 7TH GRADE TEAM

I

t is hard to believe that the end of the nine weeks is upon us… The leaves are falling and the students are getting settled into the role of learning again. Besides math, science, ELA, social studies, music enrichment, physical education, and their encore classes, many students spend additional time at volleyball, football, soccer, cross country and softball practice.

With the changing of the quarter, there will also be a change for many of the athletes, as basketball and wrestling will begin midNovember. (Fall meeting for athletes and their parents is November 12th—watch the website for more information).

Following last spring’s success with student- led conferences; we are beginning to get letters out and working on our scripts in advisory to help your child present an overview of their seventh grade year. These student-led conferences allow you, your child, and the teacher to interact and for the student to share their education and

social achievements and goals.

NMS has been collecting Box Tops for Education (BTFE) and will be turning enough box tops to receive a check for approximately $425.00.

The sixth grade group won the competition by beating out the seventh and eighth graders. Mrs. Andrews Advisory won the seventh grade competition and they were rewarded with a breakfast pizza party. We will use this BTFE money to fund some prizes for students as part of PBIS and also other items as needs and wants are added. There will be another competition from now until February so please save your box tops and send them with your child.

s the year progresses, the students seem to be adapting to the new curriculum, DIGITS, quite well. They are becoming more familiar and most of the tech issues of working online have been resolved. A

ccording to the CDC, “Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and tripled in adolescents in the past 30 years. The percentage of children aged 6–11 years in the United States who were obese increased from 7% in 1980 to nearly 18% in 2010. Similarly, the percentage of adolescents aged 12–19 years who were obese increased from 5% to 18% over the same period.”

So the question remains, as a society, what are we doing to help our children learn what it takes to live and maintain a healthy lifestyle?

A

s long as I can remember, a typical Physical Education class consisted of students coming in and playing a variety of games throughout the school year. Games such as dodge ball, mat ball, kickball, and soccer are a few that come to mind, but as we study the statics that were shared above, it seems like more needs to be done in our traditional PE classes. Don’t get me wrong, there are certainly times when games are appropriate to be played and enjoyed by all, but if we can challenge and teach our students a little more in terms of lifetime fitness, maybe we can help to curb this obesity epidemic that is running rampant across our nation.

T

his year at the Harrisburg North Middle School, we aim to tackle childhood and adolescent obesity by encouraging our students to be “Fit for Life.” In conjunction with Health class, as a PE department, we are challenging our students to learn various exercises that they can perform now, when they are 25, 40, or 60. In addition, we are offering our support to our students on how to make healthy choices when it comes to what they eat and drink.

W

e are shying away from the traditional PE class (playing mat ball, dodge ball, etc.) and are teaching our students how to properly lift weights, what circuit training looks like, what are good cardio exercises to perform, and they are learning basic aerobic workouts they can do in the comfort of their home. Also, we are having our students keep journals with how much exercise they are performing each week (we are aiming for 30 minutes of activity at least 5 days a week) and what choices they are making in terms of food consumption.

ur hope is that we can change the way the students are thinking about the importance of physical activity as well as how to make healthy choices in their lives. If we work together and encourage our young adults, we can teach them to be fit for the rest of their lives.

HARRISBURG NMS BAND OFF TO A MUSICAL START SUBMITTED BY: JOEL SHOTWELL

T

he Harrisburg North Middle School Band has been busy so far this fall. The beginning of the year had us preparing for the homecoming parade and for the Chester Band Days parade.

The students performed alongside the South Middle School band students to make a band of just over 100 students. It was a great sight and sound to witness. They performed the old rock and roll standard, “Louie Louie”. Though the day was windy and cold at Chester Band Days, the students did a great job performing and cheering on the rest of the bands as they marched by.

They represented our school with pride and dignity. One of the highlights for the students was watching Harrisburg’s own high school marching band march by.

D

ecember 10th marks the NMS band’s first ever concert band concert. This will take place at 6:30pm at the PAC in the high school. The December concert will feature the middle school jazz band, the 6th grade band and the 7th/8th grade band. We will be performing a variety of holiday music with a surprise guest narrator for a band version of “Twas The Night Before Christmas”.

That night will be filled with a variety of styles of music such as: bossa nova, swing, spy movie music, traditional classical music and even rock and roll. You won’t want to miss this one.

his year also marks the first year teaching in the Harrisburg school district for Mr. Joel Shotwell. Previously, Mr. Shotwell taught at the High School in Beresford, South Dakota. He spent 5 years there and decided to make the change to be closer to home. Recently, he and his wife had a daughter, Rylee, who is now 7 months old. Mr. Shotwell would like to express his gratitude to all the staff, administration, students and parents for making his transition to a new school smooth, and for supporting him and his program.

or young children, as for most of us, pumpkins are more than just a variety of squash. They have come to symbolize not only the vibrant color of the fall season, but the spirit of the season as well. This is the best time of year to utilize the endless possibilities of pumpkins in our classroom activities.

Young students may tend to associate pumpkins only with Halloween and jack o’lanterns; first grade tapped into a wide array of pumpkin-related curriculum in math, science and language arts. Our male rolemodels visited our classrooms to help us celebrate the fall season.

A

s part of their science unit on “Learning to Learn”, the 4th and 5th graders in the HSD Tiger Reserve program for advanced students spent time discovering more about neurology at the Sanford Research Center in early October. Students learned about the work of the Research Center, dissected a sheep brain and learned more about the parts of the brain and how they help people learn.

ndeavor has elected 12 Student Council representatives for the 2013-2014 school year. Any 4th or 5th grade student can run for student council. They must prepare a speech and read it to their classmates.

Two students are chosen from each class based upon their ideas, good character, and willingness to help with school and community projects. Their first project this year was helping PTO with the school Harvest Festival event. Other projects this year will include a pop tab collection for The Ronald McDonald House, supplies for the Sioux Falls Banquet, supplies for the Humane Society, and any other school or community projects that come their way.

econd grade students at Explorer Elementary are very enthusiastic about using our new mini iPads. Our three 2nd grade sections are able to use 24 mini iPads that are available for our classes. With the help of our technology integrationist, Mr. Lape, Mr. Flemmer, Mrs. Holt, and Mrs. Samuelson have been able to do some fun & educational activities for English Language Arts using our iPads. Each week one of our vocabulary activities consists of using our iPads to review and assess the students’ knowledge of our vocabulary words by using the Socrative website. The teacher and students are given instant feedback on their answers and they love to see their results on their iPads and/or interwrite boards.

nother activity using the mini iPads that engaged the students was our second grade team creating a YouTube video for a writing project. The teachers gathered the materials and showed the steps to

he 3rd grade classes at Explorer Elementary were hired by Mr. Lape, their computer teacher, to do some sleuthing work! Their mission was to ask good questions that would lead them to discovering the location of our Mystery Skype buddies.

T

he class was divided into five groups; Google mappers, note takers, reporters, question askers, and responders. Students relied on one another to relay the information that they discovered.

The whole process moved quite rapidly but our students were up for the challenge.

E

xcitement was flowing throughout the room in anticipation of who would guess

carving a Halloween jack-o-lantern. Once again Mr. Lape, assisted us and made the video more entertaining and informative for the students. The students then used their individual iPads to watch the video and write the steps for a How-To-Instructional writing assignment. The teachers all agreed it was a great way for the kids to be able to see the video more than once and to be very successful in writing the steps for how to carve a jack-o-lantern. The kids also loved seeing their teachers dressed up in Halloween costumes in this video! This was an enjoyable learning experience for the teachers and students.

Social Studies standards of comparing our country’s past and present.

his year our second graders, lead by our music teacher, Mrs. Short, will sing Christmas carols from Around the World to the Avera Heart Hospital and the Trail Ridge Retirement Center. Our carols in the booklets are from the cultures of the United States, Australia, Germany, Mexico, Norway, Holland, England and Wales. The booklets present a balance of sacred and secular holiday carols. It is a wonderful way to spread some holiday cheer to others in our community.

he Old Courthouse Museum’s educators, Kevin Gansz and Jill Van Veldhuizen, brought the pioneer experience to our second graders. They dressed in historic clothing and read first-hand accounts from letters and diaries to tell the Dakota pioneer story. It is a great way to bring history to life for our students and accomplish one of our

Mystery Skyping is a fantastic way to incorporate technology into the classroom as well as teaching the students about other cultures and communities. All three 3rd grade classes were Skyping with classrooms down south. It was interesting how our students could pick up on sight and sound clues. When our Skype session was over we had some excellent discussion about our Mystery Skype buddies, their location and the experience in general.

FREEDOM ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

FREEDOM ELEMENTARY AFTER SCHOOL CLUBS SUBMITTED BY: KYLE KNIPS

A

s the afternoon bell rings at Freedom Elementary, most students pack up, file into the hallways, and head home.

But an increasing number of students are enrolling in after school clubs held from 3:30-4:30pm on Wednesdays.

M

r. Knips, technology integrationist, heads the Chess Club. In its inaugural year last school year, 28 students in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade participated. “I’ve always enjoyed chess, but I wasn’t sure if kids would be interested in the game,” stated Knips.

He was pleasantly surprised with the turnout and the newfound excitement over the club that he decided to offer it again this year. As of last week, 48 students have enrolled, 24 each semester.

Knips continued: “The first few weeks of the year we focus on each of the chess pieces and how they move on the board. Students then pair up and start playing right away to get a better feel for the game. As the year progresses, we look at specific moves and strategy,” explained Knips. “The last month in each semester, students put their knowledge of the game to the test in a friendly chess tournament.“

S

tudents can also take part in Art Club during that same time period. Miss Siegle, Freedom’s K-5 art teacher, offers this extra curricular activity for students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade. Miss Siegle stated, “I started Art Club because I wanted to give kids who love art an extra opportunity to explore other materials and processes.”

The love of art is apparent as more than 50 students have signed up for the three different sessions offered. The first project of the year was making sketchbooks out of recycled materials. Miss Siegle then had the students bring them home so they could add sketches and drawings of things that gave them inspiration.

“This project was meant to foster good artistic habits at home,”

elaborated Siegle; “Art is everywhere, so I think it’s important for students to sketch what they see.”

Later on in the year the Art Club plans to decorate pumpkins, model and fire clay animals, and help with displays around the building to foster school spirit. Miss Siegle also has a field trip planned to tour the art facilities at Augustana College.

A

s many people may know, Liberty Elementary experienced a flood Memorial Day weekend causing severe damage to the gym floor. After realizing the extent of the damage, it was decided that a whole new floor would need to be installed. Progress has been made on laying a new wood floor. As of October 16th, the wood has been installed. The workers plan to sand the floor the week of October 21st and paint the week of October 28th. The plan is to have the gym floor complete by Monday, November 4th. The bleachers will then be installed.

ats off to our Physical Education teacher, Amanda Fodness, for using her creativity and adjusting to teaching without a classroom.

Each day was unique and full of excitement! From sweating it out in the 90-degree heat to dodging the rainy days, it proves physical education can be done in any location, and with or without any equipment! Some days we were in the hallways, other days we were in an unused classroom. All that truly matters is teaching the students how good it feels to move and be active and that goal was definitely met!!”

THE PROBLEM PATROL

P

roblem Patrol is a group of 4th and 5th grade students who assist on the playground before school. They provide services from tying shoes to collecting lost in found as well as supporting underclassman when they need them. It gives the 4th and 5th graders an opportunity to be positive role models. They also alert staff to any problem areas or concerns.

JOURNEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEW ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS CURRICULUM SUBMITTED BY: KRISTINA HORSTED • READING SPECIALIST

T

his year, Harrisburg adopted a new K-5 English Language Arts curriculum called Journeys.

It is an “all-in-one” researchbased reading program that combines reading, writing, grammar, phonics, and word study. It provides the blueprint for students to become critical thinkers, and each unit is filled with the rigor aligned to the Common Core State Standards.

There are also opportunities to incorporate technology into the lessons.

T

he components of the program offer a balanced approach to reading and writing.

It combines whole

group instruction, small group instruction, and independent practice.

W

hole Group Instruction: Students will gain an overview and understanding of skills and key concepts during the whole group instruction.

They will take part in Shared Reading, which may include a teacher read aloud, choral reading, echo reading, partner reading, or repeated reading.

The teacher will provide instruction on skills and strategies during this time.

S

mall Group Instruction: During Guided Reading, students work closely with the teacher in

a small group, focusing on the skills that meet their individual needs.

Groups of students will meet with the teacher several times a week for explicit practice in reading skills and strategies.

Differentiation of instruction is a part of everyday instruction to ensure that the needs of every child are met.

I

ndividual Practice: What are the rest of the students doing while the teacher is meeting with a small group? They will be practicing skills as individuals or with others.

Students may be reading or writing independently, participating in word work activities, reading

with another student, listening to a story at the listening center, or practicing another skill covered in whole group instruction.

It is crucial that students are given the time to practice these skills, especially reading independently.

J

ourneys provides teachers with a clear focus for each week, and this may be shared with the students on the weekly Focus Wall. Each week, there are specific target skills and strategies that the whole class will be working on. These are tied directly to the Common Core standards for each grade level.

Creative Writing

During the week of October 8th-11th students in Mrs. Wieking's 4th grade class were given an assignment to write a news article. They were given the general outline of a news report, and had to use their creativity to come up with the setting, characters and plot.

All articles entered were fictional. The students worked hard all week editing and adding the final touches. Here are three examples written by Samantha DeAndrea, Ella Christianson and Taylor Klein. The Argus Leader better watch out!:)

“When I was coming on stage to perform, Lauren was on the ground crying!” Kayla Messner answered, “And Julie was stuck in a plastic tube!” Messner continued.
