Parent committee launches campaign to fund new playground at ABS BY JASON STARR Observer staff
The deficiencies of the current playground at Allen Brook School have been apparent for a few years. It’s also clear that there are more pressing pressures on the Champlain Valley School District’s budget than a playground upgrade. Earlier this year, Rachel Allard, a member of Williston’s Families as Partners group, launched an effort to design and build a new playground at the K-2 school. Parents, teachers and school administrators began meeting in the spring as the “Play 27 Committee” — the 27 referring to the year (next summer) when they hope to break ground, as well as the approximate number of years the new playground will last. The current playground was built about 30 years ago. “We’re really excited to reimagine it, and I think the community is going to be really happy,” Allard said. “It’s going to look like a totally different playground and draw a lot more people than it does today.” The committee has already raised $60,000 toward a $250,000 fundraising goal. It has also engaged with the original playground designer, Pettinelli & Associates of Burlington, to draw up a redesign. The current playground,

while state-of-the-art in the mid-1990s, is not fully accessible for all abilities — particularly the mulch surface — and is rusting to the point where parts of the main structure have been roped off in recent school years. “Things have come up over the years that we have been kind of mitigating, so it makes sense that we put some time and attention into it,” ABS Principal Angela Filion said. “We really

want a nice fresh start.” One of the initial steps the Play 27 Committee took was surveying students and parents about their hopes for a new playground and gathering information from school staff about how kids are using the current play structures. “We have a broad spectrum of voices, so that’s been really awesome,” Allard said. Pettinelli & Associates has
produced preliminary drawings of what the new playground could look like. It will use an all-weather wheelchair-accessible surface to replace the mulch and have a multitude of separate play zones, catering to an age range of 3 to 9 years old. Students surveyed emphasized a need for more open space for sports, Allard said. “We’re trying to really push some more challenging opportunities for play while also bringing in some more quiet, sensory level and younger elements of play as well,” Allard said. “We want people to see it as a community resource the way they see Village Community Park.” According to Filion, it’s common for public school playground upgrades to be accomplished by parent volunteers and private fundraising rather than through the taxpayer-supported annual school district budget. When Allard attended district budget meetings in recent years, she’s accepted that the school district has other priorities. “It was very obvious to me that the district wasn’t going to have a way to fund a playground any time soon,” Allard said. “So I started asking around (and) the consensus was, no one is going to step in from the school or district and all the sudden come up with this money, so let’s do it.” For more information, to get involved or to make a donation, email play27committee@ gmail.com.
