Teen crew tackles Allen Brook trail extension

About 300 Williston residents in three different neighborhoods have a new pedestrian connection to Williston Community Park this summer thanks to the work of a Vermont

Youth Conservation Corps crew.

The crew of eight teens joined two VYCC leaders on the project, working through a rainy June to improve what was a makeshift connection through town-owned land into a viable walking path.

The path connects homes on Wildflower Circle, Michael Lane, Pleasant Acres and Jensen Road to the Allen Brook Nature Trail and on to Williston Community Park and Williston Central School.

“We’ve been planning this trail for a long

time,” said Williston Senior Planner Melinda Scott. “We finally built what was an informal path that lots of people have been using over the years into a real trail.”

bridges, puncheons and a slight relocation to improve walkability and span muddy areas.

The crew also cut down some waist-high grass in and around the path.

Two bridges — a 70-footer and a 20-footer — were built, as well as about a dozen

smaller wooden puncheons that elevate the trail over wet areas.

“I wanted to get out and do something in the community this summer, and learn something new,” said crew member Cameron Quinlan, 15, of Williston. “I’ve never built very much of anything before. It was very hard, but fun.”

The crew came from Essex, Williston and Burlington. Quinlan, who attends Missis-

By the end of the month, Quinlan said he came away with new construction skills and a sense of accomplishment.

“If felt nice to take a step back and say ‘I helped contribute to this,’” he said.

Local conservation gets a boost

By Melinda Scott Starting last November and running through this past spring, 17 Williston residents participated in 30 hours of training led by professional naturalists to start a Williston chapter of the Vermont Master Naturalist Program. The program connects residents to the nature of their hometown through training and volunteer projects.

Participants visited key natural areas in town and learned about the geology, soils, natural communities, wildlife and land use history of Williston.

Since completing the training, the Williston class has been working in teams to design and complete projects like stewardship of recently planted streamside trees and shrubs, outreach about pollinator-friendly landscap-

ADOPT-A-TRAIL The Williston Conservation Commission and town staff are responsible for managing the town’s growing network of parks and

trails. Although contractors do some of the work, we largely rely on local volunteers and businesses to complete smaller trail projects and routine maintenance.

This summer, we’re initiating a program called “Adopt-a-Trail” to engage volunteers in the stewardship of local trails. Conservation intern Maddy Zimmerman has been organizing and promoting this new program.

It is an opportunity for community members to choose a trail section and plan four outings a year to check on the trail’s condition, clear drainage, prune vegetation and report larger maintenance needs to the town. GOOD NEWS FROM AROUND TOWN Officer’s ‘compassion’ saves suicidal man Williston Police Officer John Hamlin was credited last week with talking a suicidal man off a bridge over the Winooski River.

Police Ch ief Pat r ick Foley repor ted t hat Ha m li n, i n h is first year with the department, approached a 37-year-old man who was sitting on the bridge’s railing on the northbound side of Interstate 89 near Exit 15 at about 3 a.m. last Thursday.

Foley said the shirtless male “was suicidal and was contemplating jumping off the bridge.”

Hamlin talked with the person for about a half hour, according t o p ol ic e, b efor e t he p e r son agreed to come off the bridge a nd go to t he U V M Med ical Center.

“Officer Hamlin built a rapp o r t w it h h i m ,” Fole y s a id . “(He) displayed calmness and compassion while … trying to convince him to come back to the safe side of the railing.”

She goes in search of the perfect wheel for her unicycle and has many surprise encounters in nature along the way. The story impresses the moral that through imagination, curiosity, determination and belief in your ideas, anything is possible.

Last month, Girls on the Run Vermont officially moved its operations from its flagship Brattleboro-area office to a new space at 188 Allen Brook Road in Williston.

The move comes during the nonprofit’s 20th year and in anticipation of a leadership transition from founder Nancy Heydinger to Program Manager Rachel Desautels. A resident of Williston, Desautels will take over as executive director on Oct. 1, as Heydinger is retiring.

Girls on the Run Vermont’s new Williston office will house five staff members and welcomes visitors. The organization will retain a second office in Brattleboro.

“We are very fortunate to be located in a town with so much enthusiasm and passion for this empowering program,” Desautels said. “We look forward to continued growth in the years ahead and are excited about the future of our organization.”

Girls on the Run Vermont empowers girls in grades 3-8 to develop physical, emotional and social well-being through a 10-week after school program held at over 160 sites statewide.

Local gymnast takes national yoga title Nica Thomas, a Burlington gymnast who competes for the Green Mountain Training Center in Williston, defended her title as National Yoga Asana Youth Champion last week in Lynchburg, Va. Thomas, 10, won the 7-11 age division. She also won the competition last year.

“I was really nervous, but I just took a deep breath, let it go and focused,” she said.

Thomas has a goal of becoming an Olympic gymnast.

Adams Farm on Old Stage Road in Williston is supporting a garden beautification project at the gardens outside the Ronald McDonald House in Burlington for the third season this summer, donating trays of annual flowers.

The Ronald McDonald House provides a home base for families with seriously ill children seeking treatment at the University of Vermont Children’s Hospital.

The gardens at the Ronald McDonald House were adapted as a Burlington Garden Club Therapy Project in 2009, and garden club members maintain the gardens May through October. The gardens contribute to the Ronald McDonald House’s goal of providing refuge for families experiencing the stress of their loved one’s illness.

Members of the Adams family also volunteer their time at the Ronald McDonald House.

“Giving back is the important life lesson this family does in our community,” said Doris Van Mullen, co-president of the Burlington Garden Club. “No matter how tough we think our life is, there is always someone who is facing challenges even tougher than ours.”

Keim nominated as NCAA Woman of the Year Williston’s Abigail Keim is in the running for 2019 NCAA Woman of the Year after being selected i n July as the Commonwealth Coast Conference nominee.

The cross country and track star competed for Endicott College in Beverly, Mass., graduating this year. The NCAA Woman of the Year winner will be announced Oct. 20 during a reception in Indianapolis.

Champlain Valley Union High School 2019 graduate Lindsey Drew won the Kennedy Center VSA Playwright Discovery Program competition this year and a trip in July to the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. The trip included workshops and mentoring with professional playwrights, directors and actors.

The Playwright Discovery Program asks student writers to explore the disability experience through an original short play. Drew, a resident of Hinesburg with cerebral palsy, won the competition for her play, ‘Life Coach.’

DREW: I go to Champlain Valley Union High School. I have cerebral palsy. I love reading and writing, of course, and I love food.

Q: When did you first become interested in playwriting, and what sparked that interest?

year. I did a class at school where we learned how to write 10-minute plays and spent the second half performing them.

Q: Are there any people who have served as role models for you during this process?

DREW: A role model for me in this process is definitely my acting teacher, Robin Fawcett. She teaches the playwriting class at my school and was the one who inspired me to send my script to the Kennedy Center. I owe her all my gratitude.

Q: How does playwriting stand out for you among all the other arts mediums?

DREW: Playwriting is intriguing to me because, like other forms of creative writing, you’re creating an original world of characters that feels alive. But what’s unique about playwriting is that you’re creating the blueprint for something that is eventually going to take on a life of its own. Theatre is a live art, and a good script supports that.

Q: What were the highlights of your experience at the Kennedy Center?

DREW: One of the highlights of my experience at the Kennedy Center was getting to see my play put on by professional actors.

Even with no set, costumes, or lighting, and less than a day’s work to prepare, they breathed new life into my play that I had never seen before.

What I took away from the experience was the importance of getting to talk with other disabled artists and hear their perspectives.

Q: What encouragement would you give others (young or old) who are interested in becoming better artists?

DREW: Whatever it is that you’re passionate about, practice it constantly. Some people think that in order to be good in an artistic field (or any field, really), you need to go to a prestigious school and train for years, but I disagree. Experience is the best teacher.

If you want to make films, for example, it’s great to learn about film history. But go out and make films yourself, even if they’re horrible.

It doesn’t matter if you aren’t good at something you’re passionate about from the start; it matters that you like it enough to keep going.

Muster the courage to put yourself out there and say ‘This is who I am, take it or leave it.’ Some people won’t like what you have to say and some will. But regardless, you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment in being your authentic self.

Generosity from all corners of the community

There are so many good things about Williston. Despite our sprawl and ever-expanding neighborhoods, Williston continues to work at being a real community, with school events, fundraisers and a library and town offices that look at ways to keep the people of Williston connected in fun, healthy and cultural ways.

There are active churches, a Rotary club, band concerts on the green, concerts at the Old Brick Church and an active recreation department. There are classes for kids and adults at the library, conversations about substance use prevention, neighborhood get-togethers and more. There are hiking trails, an outdoor center and golf courses.

One of the many great things that happen in this town is our Community Food Shelf. The shelf is a resource used by 240-250 families every month (which translates to 700-800 people having good, nutritious food). Most of the volunteers (a group of about 80 people) live in Williston, although there are many who come from surrounding towns to see that the need is filled.

Williston. Donations of food and money come to the shelf each month from all around town.

Small businesses have collection jars on their counters; larger businesses host competitions for donations between their departments; food businesses give food and host fundraisers; individuals write checks, ask for food instead of birthday gifts and grow extra vegetables in their gardens to donate.

When the food shelf has a table at school events or the election polls, people show up with food and money. Kindergarteners collect food and go to the shelf for tours. Eighth-graders and high school seniors study hunger and

food insecurity and include the food shelf in their projects.

These are some, but not all, of the reasons that the Williston Community Food Shelf has flourished over the past 10-plus years.

Kindness and generosity are alive and well in Williston, Vermont.

Ripples of kindness on an evening commute

While scrolling through my endless social media newsfeed, I stopped on one post and took a moment to digest it. It claimed that the number of adults and kids who read books has dropped dramatically, and showed surprisingly low percentages of those who have claimed to have read an entire book within the past year.

As usual, I do not fit into the mold. A voracious page-turner, I always keep one or two books waiting on my nightstand while the current one has its day. One recent find is an homage to Fred Rogers called “The Good Neighbor” (the movie to be released in theaters this November). How many of us grew up with Mr. Rogers’ calm, gentle manner, his way of teaching directed at the

younger set? He touted kindness and the impor tance of simple acts. I started reading on Sunday. The next day, I observed a random lesson in kindness that would have made our friend Mr. Rogers proud.

Driving home, I passed a local convenience store and noticed an elderly man struggling to pull and position an air hose to reach the rear tires of his small car. He was obviously exerting himself. My first thought was, “Oh, I should stop and help!” But, I continued onward to the traffic light, now red. As I stopped, I glanced in my rear-view mir ror to see a fancy, black Lincoln car behind me. The driver, craning his neck for a better view, also noticed the man. As the light remained red, the thought of, “I need to help!” nagged at me.

It was then that the driver of the

helping hand now nearby. It was an act of random kindness unfolding during an evening commute.

T he t raf f ic lig ht had si nce turned green, and I continued home, tears in my eyes after witnessing a selfless, from-the-heart act of kindness. Why didn’t I stop to offer assistance? Mr. Rogers would have, without hesitation.

This stranger in the fancy car had the compassion to take his time to help a person in need.

After that drive home, I vowed that each day I will practice a random act of kindness: letting a car go in front of mine in a line of traffic, asking if a person with fewer items in her grocery cart would like my spot, sneaking a flower on my manager’s desk before she ar rives, giving the guy who cut me off in traffic the benefit of the doubt, paying for the person’s coffee behind me,

or surprising my little dog and tortoise with their favorite watermelon treat, just because.

Kindness ripples manifest into waves of continuous compassion.

Am I perfect? Not by a longshot.

I’m simply doing my part in a world turned upside down. And, don’t we all need some ext ra warm fuzzy feelings right now?

We are in an era of nonstop news, r ushing to get here and there and packed schedules. We can’t possibly fit any more into our days. Or can we?

Let’s ask Mr. Lincoln. I’m not sure if I would recognize this good Samar itan if I saw him again, but I will remember what happened on that typical Monday afternoon and take the lesson of kindness to heart. Mr. Rogers would unequivocally approve.

Rotarians at the ready

The Williston-Richmond Rotary Club has been quietly providing much-needed and often-unnoticed services to the communities of Williston and Richmond for more than 20 years.

Over the years, Rotarians have been engaged in local, regional and international service projects for the purpose of helping when needed, and because it is simply the right thing to do and is beneficial to all.

Williston’s membership is comprised of business and professional leaders, educators, farmers and government and elected officials. Whether a dentist, doctor, lawyer, clergy or contractor, Williston Rotarians willingly and eagerly help build handicapped-accessible ramps on a moment’s notice, or provide heating assistance — or even a new furnace — to a family in need during the cold of winter.

Rotarians have spent many Saturday mornings over the years helping to clear and maintain local trails, maintaining a canoe access on the Winooski River or placing and maintaining benches along the Allen Brook trail, and at other locations throughout town.

Literacy has been a focal point of activity for the past many years as the club has donated time, funds and books to Williston school literacy programs, mentoring programs and to school children in Central and South America.

This October, the club will sponsor the Old Brick Church Music Series with all proceeds benefitting Polio

Plus — the flagship international cause that was begun many years ago with the sole intent of eradicating polio worldwide. The success of this program has been enormous, with polio being completely eliminated from all but two countries.

Every December, the club sponsors the Jonathan Milne Senior Holiday Lunch for any seniors residing in Williston or Richmond. The turkey and ham luncheon is organized and staffed entirely by Rotarians and also includes entertainment by the Williston Central School choral ensembles.

The Rotary’s Annual Easter Egg Hunt and Parade was started by Rotarian Bill Mikell and continues as a major community event on the day before Easter every year.

This year, over 200 children paraded around the town green then raced to find candy-filled plastic eggs and, if lucky, the special eggs that would be turned in for a fun-filled Easter basket.

Helping youth gain leadership skills is another undertaking of the group. Each year the club will send three or four high school sophomores to a weekend leadership training at Lyndon State University. Additionally, the club will provide three scholarships to graduating seniors for college, trade schools or apprenticeship programs.

The Williston-Richmond Rotary Club meets every Thursday morning at 7:15 at the Williston Federated Church community hall.

Hiring an in-home caregiver Dear Savvy Senior, I need to locate a good in-home caregiver for my 83-year-old mother. What’s the best way to find and hire one?

Dear Looking, Finding a good in-home caregiver for an elderly parent can be challenging. How can you find one that’s reliable and trustworthy, as well as someone your

parent likes and is comfortable with? Here are some tips that can help.

KNOW YOUR NEEDS Before you start the task of looking for an in-home caregiver, your first step is to determine the level of care your mom needs.

This can pinpoint the type of help she’ll need. For example, if she only needs help with daily living tasks like shopping, cooking, doing laundry, bathing or dressing, a “homemaker” or “personal care aide” will do.

But, if she needs health care services, there are “home health aides” that may do all the things a homemaker does, plus they also have training in administering

medications, changing wound d ressings and other medically related duties. Home health aides often work under a nurse’s supervision.

Once you settle on a level of care, you then need to decide how many hours of assistance she’ll need. For example, does your mom need someone to come in just a few mornings a week to help her cook, clean, run errands or perhaps bathe? Or does she need more continuous care that requires daily visits or a fulltime aide?

After you determine her needs, there are two ways in which you can go about hiring someone.

HIRING THROUGH AN AGENCY Hiring a personal care or home health aide through an agency is the safest and easiest option, but it’s more expensive. Costs typically run anywhere between $14 and $25 an hour depending on where you live and the qualification of the aide.

How it works is you pay the agency, and they handle everything including an assessment of your mom’s needs, assigning appropriately trained and prescreened staff to care for her, and finding a fill-in on days her aide cannot come.

Some of the drawbacks, however, are that you may not have much input into the selection of the caregiver, and the caregivers may change or alternate, which can cause a disruption.

A simple summer strawberry dessert Enjoy your summer with fresh fruit in this easy strawberry shortcake recipe.

EASY STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE 1 can (5-8) Pillsbury flaky buttermilk biscuits 2 tablespoons butter, melted 1/4 cup sugar Strawberry mixture: 3 cups fresh strawberries, sliced 1/3 cup sugar Whipped cream: 1/2 cup wh ippi ng cream 2 tablespoons sugar 1/4 teaspoon vanilla Heat oven to 375 degrees.

Separate biscuits. Dip tops and sides of biscuits in melted butter.

Dip biscuits, covering tops and sides, in sugar. Place sugar-side up on ungreased baking sheet. Bake 13-17 minutes, or until golden brown.

To make strawberry mixture: In medium bowl, mix strawberries and sugar. Set aside.

To make whipped cream: In small bowl, beat whipping cream and sugar until soft peaks form. Add vanilla and beat into mixture.

On plate, split biscuits and put dollop of whipped cream mixture on bottom half of biscuit. Add strawberry mixture. Replace biscuit top and dollop with whipping cream.

Heidi is a four year old white lab x Great Pyrenees female. She is calm and grounded and as dear and sweet as anyone could want. Heidi is also deaf. Her first foster home did not even realize that she was deaf. She played with the kids and the other dogs and folks assumed that she just did not know her name.
