Former NFL QB shares story of addiction, redemption

Ryan Leaf’s narrative starts slowly, and if you’re not a fan of the NFL and didn’t follow his epic descent from starting quarterback into drug addiction and prison,

you might wonder what worthy insight he has to impart about struggling, overcoming and living a fulfilling life.

Williston’s Majestic 10 theaters — about the part where he describes how crushing friends and competitors in high school sports was his first addiction — the room was riveted.

Leaf spoke at the Majestic at the behest of Bob Morgan, the North Country Federal Credit Union CEO who recalls hearing Leaf in a sports talk radio interview recount how he has overcome his addictions and found a purposeful life. It was one of those moments commuters describe when they arrive at home but remain in their driveway to finish listening to a radio segment.

With opiate addiction affecting so many Vermont lives, Morgan reached out to invite Leaf to town.

“We were looking for someone to connect the dots about the dangers of opiate abuse,” Morgan said. “He has gone through it. I thought his story would resonate.”

Earlier in the day, Leaf had spoken at the credit union’s annual meeting.

“We wanted to use the opportunity while we had him here to have a community session and make an impact with the community at large,” said Morgan.

‘I WAS THE PROBLEM’ One might assume the story of an NFL player getting hooked on painkillers would begin during his playing days. Leaf said he took opiates on numerous occasions to play through pain. But it wasn’t until shortly after his retirement, as he came to grips with a professional career that is remembered mostly as a mockery, that he became engulfed.

His problem with opiates started as a way to dull mental and emotional pain.

Leaf was a multi-sport phenomenon in a small Montana town and a blue chip recruit who led Washington State University to its first Rose Bowl appearance in nearly 70 years. He describes being surrounded by a loving family and supportive community as a kid. But his athletic prowess fed a sense of superiority that led to his undoing.

“I ould get away with things other kids couldn’t because I could perform on the field,” Leaf said. “I believed I was better than everybody.

“I didn’t work on how I treated other people or how I dealt with life.”

In the 1998 NFL draft, Leaf was chosen No. 2 overall by the San Diego Chargers. He was guaranteed $31 million. For someone whose definition of success at the time was “money, power and prestige,” Leaf was self-actualized. But his entitled attitude quickly caught up to him.

After an embarrassing loss to Kansas City in his third game, he was confronted with critical fans and pointed media questions. There is a famous video clip of Leaf exploding in anger at a reporter during a locker room interview. He now describes himself at that time as “a petulant child.”

Leaf played for four teams over six years, and by the end was deeply depressed.

“There was always a problem wherever I went,” he said. “It turns out, I was the problem … I was mentally ill and I didn’t realize it.”

‘ANGRY, SELF-LOATHING AND SELFISH’ He tells the story of attending an event in Las Vegas during his first season out of the league. With his failures in the NFL still fresh, he was booed by the crowd after his attendance was announced. That night, he recalls, he took Vicodin for the first time by choice.

“It didn’t make me feel better, but I didn’t feel anything,” he said.

“That’s what I was looking for, and it worked.”

For the next eight years, Leaf numbed his depression with opiates, getting drugs by doctor prescription at first, then by any means necessary.

Leaf didn’t specify the extent to which his fortune evaporated over this time, but by 2010 he was living in a one-bedroom apartment back in his hometown in Montana, victimizing the community.

And that was my day,” he said.

“The ends justified the means. I did anything it took.”

Leaf was arrested in March of 2012 for burglarizing a home in search of opiates.

He now views the arrest as an intervention from a higher power — the jolt he needed to take him to his lowest point, then set the stage for his revival. Leaf spent the first three months of his prison sentence withdrawing from opiates in solitary confinement.

“I was as angry, as self-loathing and selfish as you could imagine,” he said.

When he joined the general pris-

on population, Leaf says his higher power gave him another needed jolt. His cellmate was an Afghanistan veteran in jail for causing a fatal car crash while driving drunk.

He encouraged Leaf to come to the prison library and help inmates study English.

“He confronted me,” Leaf said.

“He said I didn’t understand the value I had.”

The man is now one of Leaf’s closest friends.

“I was being of service to another human being for the first time in my life. I knew, when I got out, that was going to have to be the foundation of my life, otherwise nothing would change,” Leaf said. “You either get better or you die. That’s what this disease does.”

cupation with prestige. He is now guided by the principles of accountability, spirituality and community. Leaf has become a leader in the recovery community in Los Angeles, where he lives, and shares his story in speaking engagements nationally, hoping to shed light on the opiate problem and lead other addicts into recovery.

“If there is a positive change for one person, that’s all I can ask for,” Leaf said. “My hope is no one ever feels as miserable as I did at one point.”

The annual NFL draft is this week. It’s usually a trigger for Leaf, a reminder of the unfulfilled potential and entitled attitude

he has left behind. But this year there is a twist. Leaf has come full circle with the NFL. He is newly re-employed with the league, hired in March to help retiring players transition successfully into post-playing careers.

“Every day is a new start for me, and it can always be better,” he said.

After Leaf spoke, Jack Zuwallack and Caleb Jenson, Williston teenagers and football players at Champlain Valley Union High School, approached him. They asked Leaf about the possibility of sharing his story at a school-wide assembly. Leaf handed them his card and vowed to make it happen.

as they hiked, played at the lake and explored museums and other attractions in Vermont. Deeva particularly enjoyed the days when they learned about and made art.

Stephanie recalls, “Deeva is in her element when we are working on arts and crafts. We have learned about different styles of art, including pointillism, and the artist, Georges Seurat. Then the girls created their own paintings using his techniques.”

Over the summers spent together, the Perkins have seen their relationship with Deeva evolve. “Our connection has grown stronger over the years.

Deeva and our daughter became friends immediately. Now, they have an undeniable bond,” Stephanie said. “We would encourage other families to host a child. It is a rewarding experience that has provided us the opportunity to appreciate the small stuff, to remember what is important in life, and to let loose, have fun and make memories,” Stephanie said.

FDA officials are sending mixed messages about a genetic test they just approved -- and the lack of clarity could jeopardize Americans’ health.

The test, from genomics firm 23andMe, is simple to use. Folks order it online and mail in their saliva samples. Within weeks, 23andMe analyzes their DNA for nearly three dozen genetic variants. Those variants can help predict how consumers would metabolize commonly prescribed drugs such as antidepressants and blood thinners.

FDA officials lauded the test as a “step forward” that will help patients “better inform their discussions with their health care providers.”

Yet the FDA also issued an extensive list of warnings. The test “does not determine whether a medication is appropriate for a patient.” As a result, “consumers should not use this test to make treatment decisions on their own.

Any medical decisions should be made only after discussing the results with a licensed health care provider.”

Inevitably, some consumers won’t consult doctors and will stop taking certain medicines based on the results. It’s irresponsible for the FDA to approve a product so prone

to misuse, especially since the test results only make sense when contextualized by physicians.

This is hardly the first time that regulators have offered a stamp of approval to products consumers don’t understand.

Consider FDA-approved breast and ovarian cancer diagnostic tests. These tests identify mutations within two genes associated with an increased risk for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer.

Thousands of women have taken such tests.

Traditionally, patients had to order them through their doctors, who could contextualize the results. But in 2018, the FDA greenlit the first direct-to-consumer cancer test, also made by 23andMe. 23andMe’s test searches for just three out of more than 1,000 known mutations on the two cancer-linked genes. Doctor-ordered tests, by contrast, are far more comprehensive.

Consider the experience of Jane -- a patient with a family history of cancer. After testing negative for three BRCA mutations through 23andMe’s test, she believed she was in the clear. But the test failed to take into account her family history or thousands of other known mutations common to her descent.

sity, warned that direct-to-consumer tests are generally “less likely to be able to predict your chances of developing a health problem.”

Consumers may opt for direct-to-consumer tests without fully understanding their shortcomings. For instance, if a patient’s test results don’t show any of the three harmful genetic variants in 23andMe’s test, she might think she isn’t predisposed to breast cancer.

Unaware that there are hundreds of other mutations, the patient might forgo regular preventative care and early-detection measures.

This would make it harder to catch and treat cancer -- a life-or-death matter.

The FDA is widely viewed as the world’s premier safety regulator. So when consumers see that a test is “FDA-approved,” they assume it’s high-quality. Increasingly, that’s not the case.

The agency can protect consumers by refusing to approve products that could be easily misused and being clearer about the nature of the products it does approve.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Nuclear response I’m writing in response to a letter from Meegan Delphia supporting the proposed basing of the F-35 nuclear bomber in Vermont.

The nuclear bomb that has been specifically designed for the F-35 has a maximum explosive force of three times the bomb that destroyed Hiroshima and killed 150,000 people instantly—and an additional 150,000 over time from radiation disease.

Some say an even more dangerous aspect is that the F-35’s bomb can also be “dialed down” to less than the force of the Hiroshima bomb. It then becomes what some Pentagon planners consider to be a “usable nuke.” They believe that a “little” nuclear explosion

will not lead to all out nuclear war. Others disagree.

The F-35 is the first fighter-bomber that has been designated as part of USA’s strategic nuclear triad in the 2018 Nuclear Posture Review. Combined with the F-35’s stealth properties, it is designed to evade enemy radars and have first strike nuclear capability.

The U.S. already has enough nuclear weapons to blow up the entire world many times over.

The F-35 is part of a whole new generation of nuclear weapons that will cost $1.5 trillion. That’s enough money to provide quality childcare and preschool for every child in the United States FOR THE NEXT 50 YEARS. We support and appreciate the dedicated professionals in

our Vermont National Guard.

We oppose the insanity of the Pentagon’s nuclear war planners.

We applaud Representative Jim McCullough’s principled stand against this nuclear boondoggle.

The big question is, do Vermonters want to be complicit in the latest nuclear nightmare? Vermont ranks in top 10 states for disability employment

Rubaud recognized Julie Rubaud’s Red Wagon Plants was recently named the 2019 Vermont Woman-Owned Business of the Year. Red Wagon Plants is located in Hinesburg, and grows and sells a variety of plants and flowers year-round.

Rubaud started Red Wagon Plants in 2005 as a seasonal business, open from April to June. When it began, it consisted of three small greenhouses and she only sold wholesale to a select clientele. In 2007, she began selling retail. Today the business has 25 seasonal employees, nine greenhouses and sells year round. Rubaud says she is very fortunate in that many of her employees return to Red Wagon Plants year after year, a trait not commonly associated with seasonal work.

“Red Wagon is known as a place that pays well and has fun, family like work environment. The mission of the business is to help people succeed in the garden, as well as to help employees succeed in their work lives,” said Rubaud.

Rubaud was recently selected to participate in the SBA’s 2019 Emerging Leaders Program, a free class for small business owners. During the seven-month program, she will create a three-year strategic growth plan to help reach those goals.

A new addition to Red Wagon Plants is a classroom built inside one of the greenhouses to conduct a variety of workshops. Red Wagon Plants and other small business award winners will be presented their awards during the 2019 Vermont Small Business Awards Ceremony in June. The ceremony is open to the public.

Spring Cleaning?

Last year, more than 1,700 Vermonters with disabilities entered the workforce, propelling the Green Mountain State to join the ranks of the top states with the best employment rates for people with disabilities. Part of a nationwide trend of job growth for people with disabilities, Vermont stood out for a dramatic increase in its overall disability employment, now ranking sixth in the nation. The newly published 2018 Annual Disability Statistics Compendium shows Vermont has a 47.2 disability employment rate.

That number is up from only 39.6 percent employment for Vermonters with disabilities.

To put that in a larger perspective, there are 47,113 working-age (18-64) Vermonters with disabilities. Out of that number, 22,234 have jobs. Nationally, the disability employment rate of all Americans with disabilities is only 37 percent. What that means is that Vermont consistently outperforms other, bigger states like California and Texas.

The Governor’s Committee on

Employment for People with Disabilities has helped to implement key policy initiatives. In September 2018, the Committee presented multiple “Spirit of the ADA Awards” to inclusive employers and community providers for their hard work getting more people with disabilities into the workforce. In February 2019, the Chair of the Governor’s Committee on the Employment of People with Disabilities emphasized the crucial link between identity and employment. “All of us through our work have made friends, felt productive, and created an identity. We are just looking for the same for people with disabilities, to have that opportunity to make employment a big part of their lives.”

Likewise, the Vermont Department of Disabilities, Aging & Independent Living has won awards for its commitment to affordability as well as access.

Vermont is also home to engaged self-advocate groups such as Green Mountain Self-Advocates (GMSA) and advocacy

organizations such as Vermont Coalition for Disability Rights.

Beyond Vermont, how is the workforce changing for people with disabilities? What is driving these changes? The answer is simple. According to Vincenzo Piscopo of the Coca-Cola Company: “People with disabilities bring a unique skill set that it is very valuable for companies.”

Young professional community survey results released New UVM study shows dietary self-monitoring takes less than 15 minutes a day If you want to lose weight, research shows, the single best predictor of success is monitoring and recording your calorie and fat intake throughout the day -- to “write it when you bite it.”

But dietary self-monitoring is commonly viewed as so unpleasant and time-consuming, many wouldbe weight-losers can’t muster the will power to do it.

New research to be published in the March issue of “Obesity” suggests that the reality of dietary self-monitoring may be far less disagreeable than the perception.

After six months of monitoring their dietary intake, the most successful participants in an online behavioral weight-loss program spent an average of just 14.6 minutes per day on the activity. Program participants recorded the calories and fat for all foods and beverages they consumed, as well as the portion

sizes and the preparation methods.

The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Vermont and the University of South Carolina, is the first to quantify the amount of time that dietary self-monitoring actually takes for those who successfully lose weight.

“People hate it; they think it’s onerous and awful, but the question we had was: How much time does dietary self-monitoring really take?” said Jean Harvey, chair of the Nutrition and Food Sciences Department at the University of Vermont and the lead author of the study. “The answer is, not very much.”

Har vey and her colleag ues looked at the dietary self-monitoring habits of 142 participants in an online behavioral weight control intervention. For 24 weeks, participants met weekly for an online group session led by a trained

dietician.

They also logged their daily food intake online, in the process leaving behind a record of how much time they spent on the activity and how often they logged in – information the researchers mined for the new study.

Participants who lost 10 percent of their body weight – the most successful members of the cohort – spent an average of 23.2 minutes per day on self-monitoring in the first month of the program. By the sixth month, the time had dropped to 14.6 minutes.

Brief but frequent What was most predictive of weight-loss success was not the time spent monitoring – those who took more time and included more detail did not have better outcomes – but the frequency of log-ins, confirming the conclusions of earlier studies.

Completed by 500 young professionals in the region between January and March of this year, the “State of the Greater Burlington Young Professional Community Survey” covered housing, employment and civic engagement topics as a means to understand what young professionals want and need to continue to live and work in the greater Burlington area.

74 percent of survey respondents were between the ages of 22 and 34 and 85 percent of respondents were employed full-time. Average student monthly loan payments for those who completed the survey was $424.

56 percent are renting with Burlington and South Burlington being the top rental locations. Work topped the list of reasons respondents live in the greater Burlington area and they listed culture and community, natural assets and localvore values as the region’s top assets, while citing our cost of living, housing and lack of job growth opportunities as the biggest challenges.

“Young professionals love Burlington and want to stay here, but challenges like a lack of single family homes, a high cost of living and insufficient job growth opportunities are major concerns,” said Erin Bombard, Director of Burlington Young Professionals. “While 26 percent of survey respondents indicate that they plan to leave the area in between 1 and 4 years, this snapshot of our young professional community gives us an opportunity to work together on these challenges.”

“We are fortunate that so many took the time to share their thoughts on how we make the Burlington region an even better place to live, work and give back,” said Catherine Davis, Executive Vice President of the Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce. “While it shouldn’t be a surprise that people in their 20s and 30s are looking to buy homes, start families and grow in their careers, it should galvanize us into action since retaining our workforce is vital to our community’s future.”

Boys U12 Williston soccer team undefeated session

On Saturday, April 20, the 9- to 12-year-old members of the U12 Williston soccer team accomplished a feat that will not be easy for a town club to repeat. They went undefeated in the Nordic U12 Indoor Session Three. This win marks the third indoor title the team won this year.

Previously, they won Nordic and Far Post tournaments at the U10 level. While the players come from diverse backgrounds, they share a commitment and love for soccer. Ultimate’s first varsity season

Nineteen years ago, Syrus Amedore picked up a new sport as a high school student at Champlain Valley Union High School.

This week, Amedore will stand on the sidelines as the head coach as that new sport - Ultimate - kicks off its first varsity season.

“I actually started playing at CVU in 1997,” Amedore, who coaches the CVU boys Ultimate team, said. “We had a club when I was in school, but there was a lot less opportunities at the time.

“I love the game and it has given a lot to me.”

Ultimate joins the varsity ranks at CVU on Tuesday, April 30, when the boys and girls teams play their first game of the spring season.

“The returners, we started this as a club and we made it to a varsity sport, it’s a pretty good feat for us,” said CVU junior Maryn Askew. “It’s really exciting.”

Three years ago, the Vermont Principals’ Association sanctioned ultimate as an exhibition sport. Vermont then became the first state in the United States to officially recognize ultimate as a varsity sport when they approved it for varsity

status this year.

“Now we get that recognition that we have never gotten,” said CVU’s Claire Rocheleau.

Champlain Valley will jump right into the season after having the sport at the Hinesburg school for years - nearly 20 years by Amedore’s recollection - and have already seen the benefit of ultimate’s varsity status.

“Things haven’t changed much for us,” Amedore said. “We were treated like a varsity sport the last two years here (at CVU), but it is exciting to be officially recognized throughout the state.”

Ultimate is played on a playing surface slightly smaller than a football field with seven players on each side. Players pass a disc (or frisbee) down the field with the goal of getting it into the end zone. If the disc falls, it is turned over to the other team.

Now Vermont high school fans will get a chance to see it for themselves.

“It’s a legit sport,” Askew said. “It requires skill and hard work.”

OBITUARIES Tom Nelson Thomas (Tom) Nelson, 77, of St. George passed away peacefully on April 5, 2019, at the University of Vermont Medical Center after suffering a brief illness.

Tom was born in Cape Girardeau, Mo., on August 5, 1941, to Thomas Nelson Jr. and Delpha Nelson. He spent his childhood growing up in Missouri and Kentucky before his family moved to the Chicago suburbs.

Tom attended Kentucky Military Institute for his last year of high school.

After military school, he joined the Air Force and served for four years, spending time in Korea following the war. After being discharged, he moved back to Illinois, where he owned and successfully operated a service center franchise. Eventually he made his way to Florida, where he spent many years living in Pompano Beach. It was there that he found his love for carpentry through working in the construction field. He also became an expert scuba diver, enjoyed deep sea fishing and played a lot of tennis while living in the Sunshine State.

One day the northern winds came calling, and he found himself living

in Burlington, Vt. It was here he continued to work construction and started his own carpentry business.

Although his company did new construction, renovation of older homes was always Tom’s passion. He thrived on always having something to do and continued to do small projects in the Burlington area until just months before his death. He loved being useful to others in any way that he could.

Tom’s service to the community included being a Hospice volunteer for a number of years. When Burlington formed a sister city relationship with Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua, Tom traveled to Puerto Cabezas with a Burlington Sister City Coalition of carpenters, and together they built a playground for the city.

During his time in Vermont, Tom always had a very special relationship with plants and gardening. He was happiest while working in his garden and tending his many houseplants.

He also taught himself to sail on Lake Champlain and spent long hours sailing out on the water. His passion for fishing continued in Vermont, where he and his youngest son Daniel took joy in countless fishing trips. Tom and Dan also shared a love of baseball

and basketball, both being devoted Red Sox and Celtics fans and rarely missing a game. Volunteering as an umpire and coach for the Williston teams Dan played on was a great source of enjoyment for him. Toward the end of his life, he was an avid reader; when he wasn’t working on a project, you could often find him at the Williston library checking out his weekly books.

Tom leaves behind four children: Joel Nelson of Lakewood, Ca.; Terri Berkheimer of Manassas, Va.; Scot Nelson of Deland, Fla.; and Daniel Nelson of St. George, Vt. He is also survived by his sister Barbara Deldin of Largo, Fla.; his brother Joseph Nelson of Coon Rapids, Minn.; his former wife and dear friend Mary-Ellen Giroux of Williston, Vt.; and four grandchildren, Mariah, Brandon, Luke and Morgan. Last but not least, Tom is survived by three beloved cats, Timi-Nu, Tucky and Walter.

During the last days of his life, Tom was full of many profound thoughts, one of which being, “I am ready to set my sails and sail off into a sea of bliss ... to see what I will find.” We’ll look forward to finding him out there someday.

Safe ways to get rid of expired, unused medicine Dear Savvy Senior, What’s the best, environmentally safe way to dispose of old and unused medications? My mother has a medicine cabinet chocked-full of pills, some of which haven’t been touched in 25 years, and I’d like to clean it out for her.

Protective Daughter Dear Protective, Cleaning out the medicine cabinet is a chore that most people don’t think about, but it’s an important task that can help prevent medica-

tion problems, and protect children who may have access to these old, unused drugs. Here’s how you can clean out your mother’s medicine cabinet so it’s safe and useful.

Return them Your local pharmacy, as well as hospitals, clinics, long-termcare facilities, and narcotic treatment programs, might accept your mom’s unused medications, often as part of programs that collect and destroy unused drugs. Search for

an authorized facility near you at DisposeMyMeds.org.

You can also drop off her unused meds at designated police departments, fire stations and other sites on National Prescription Take Back Day, Saturday, April 27. To find a collection site near you, visit TakeBackDay.dea.gov.

Use a Ddsposal kiosk Many Walgreens and CVS stores have free, anonymous and secure kiosks where you can dispose of any medication. Remove your personal information from the packaging and drop unwanted medication, including opioids, in the slot.

Mail them Costco, Rite Aid and CVS pharmacies sell postage-paid envelopes for customers to mail any prescription, including opioids and over-the-counter medications, to a disposal facility.

Throw them out If mailing them in or getting to one of the drop-off sites is not an option, you can dispose of them yourself, but do so carefully. The Food and Drug Administration recommends taking the medications out of their original bottles and putting them in a sealable plastic bag with an undesirable substance like coffee grounds, dirt or kitty litter. Then seal the plastic bag and throw it in the trash. This will make the medication less appealing to children, pets or other people who may fish through your trash.

But don’t do this with dangerous drugs, such as opioids, which can be abused. For these, the FDA says flushing them down the toilet is OK. But trace amounts of drugs can end up in the water supply so this should be done only as a last resort. To see the FDA list of medications that should be flushed when they are no longer needed, go to FDA.gov and type “flush list” into the search box.

Or, another option is to purchase some medication disposal bags like the Medsaway Medication Disposal System. These are carbon pouches that are designed to neutralize all medication including narcotics, liquid medication, transdermal patches and controlled substances so you can just add water and toss them in the trash. You can find medication disposal bags at some local pharmacies or online at Amazon.com for around $15.

You’ll also want to make sure to scratch out all your mom’s personal information on the empty medicine bottles or other packaging before throwing it away to protect her identity and privacy.

Traffic accident results in multiple charges

The Williston Police Department responded to a traffic accident on South Brownell Road, just north of Walker Hill Road, on April 17 after receiving a report of a vehicle fully engulfed in flames. According to police reports, the driver had fled the scene on foot and two passengers told police the driver had left the scene with her boyfriend and her 9 year-old child. The driver was identified by the passengers as Kimberly Donovan, 46, of Barre.

Approximately 30 minutes later, the three returned to the scene and Donovan was placed in custody and charged with driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident, gross negligent operation of a vehicle and cruelty to a child, according to the report.

One passenger, with non-life-threatening injuries, was transported for medical care by the Williston Fire Department. The vehicle is a total loss, according to police reports. Two telephone poles were also severely damaged and had to be replaced by FairPoint Communications.

Although the accident remains under investigation, alcohol and speed appear to be contributing factors, according to the report. If anyone witnessed the accident, police request that you call the Williston Police Department at 878-6611.

Ruby Beet Chicken Salad Skewers, flavored with Aunt Nellie’s Baby Whole Pickled Beets, can be ready in less than an hour for those last-minute get-togethers.

RUBY BEET CHICKEN SALAD SKEWERS 1 jar (16 ounces) Aunt Nellie’s Baby Whole Pickled Beets 2 large boneless, skinless chicken breast halves (about 1 pound) 1/2 teaspoon salt, plus additional, to taste, divided 1/2 teaspoon pepper, plus additional, to taste, divided 4 1/2 tablespoons stone ground mustard, divided 1 1/2 tablespoons, plus 1/3 cup, orange marmalade, divided 2 tablespoons minced fresh chives 1 large lemon, zest and juice (1/3 cup juice) 1/4 cup olive oil 1 bag (9 ounces) leafy romaine lettuce pieces 1/3 cup chopped almonds, toasted 1/3 cup crumbled blue, feta or goat cheese Heat oven to 375 F. Drain beets; set aside.

Season both sides of chicken with salt and pepper, to taste. In small bowl, combine 1 1/2 tablespoons mustard and 1 1/2 tablespoons marmalade. Brush mixture over chicken until completely coated. Bake chicken on rimmed baking sheet lined with aluminum foil about 20-25 minutes, or until juices run clear; set aside.

To make vinaigrette: In medium bowl, combine remaining mustard, remaining marmalade, chives, lemon zest and juice, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Slowly pour in oil while whisking vigorously until completely combined.

Slice cooled chicken into 1-inch pieces. Onto each skewer, thread one beet, one piece of chicken and 4-5 pieces of lettuce; repeat two times for each skewer, adding one beet at ends. Repeat to make eight SCG&Son Cremation Ad skewers.

Place skewers on large serving platter.

calls on themselves and are encouraged to know all the rules.

“You have to hold yourself accountable,” said CVU’s Taylor Antonioli.

“Even on the field with other teams, you have to be respectful. It’s just a part of the game to be respectful.”

The varsity status has already had an impact for the Redhawks. After turning out 25 total players eight years ago as a club, Amedore said that this season 54 boys tried out for the team.

The girls team jumped to 25 girls this season, after having just eight players last season. The addition includes second year coach Maya Waehrer for the girls team, who is a

student at the University of Vermont and adds more legitimacy to the growing sport.

“We have definitely had a big uptick in players,” Amedore said. “This year, there will be 20 boys teams.”

Members of the CVU girls ultimate team encourage those interested in learning more to come out and watch.

They are hoping that varsity status helps people look past their misconceptions when it comes to ultimate.

“People think it is a super easy sport,” said CVU player Pheobe Sarandos. “You have a different midnset when you have never played before. It is just as intense as any other sport.”

This attachment will designate the portion of the uncommitted reserve capacity that will be available for use during the next fiscal year which starts July 1, 2019.
