VSP presents plans for new barracks at Exit 12 ‘A hefty chunk of hillside is going to be opened up’ By Jason Starr Observer staff
Williston planners requested new drawings depicting how a proposed Vermont State Police barracks will appear to drivers passing on Interstate 89 during a preliminary review of the project last week at Town Hall. Three buildings are proposed for a 51-acre wooded hillside just south of Exit 12, a complex that would replace the current barracks about a half-mile down the road on Route 2A. Up to 17 acres will be cleared to accommodate building footprints and parking lots. The buildings will be no more than two stories tall, but a 50-foot communications tower with clear sightlines to Mt. Mansfield and Camp Johnson in Colchester is also planned. The project is in the town’s “Gateway Zoning District South,” which has building height restrictions that are designed “to maintain the appearance of a wooded hillside from afar, so you are not looking up
at the hillside from Route 2 or the highway and seeing giant buildings,” Williston Senior Planner Melinda Scott explained. The Development Review Board, in its Oct. 22 unanimous decision to allow the state to proceed to a final review of the project, required an architectural drawing of the buildings as they will look from the interstate. Drawings submitted for preliminary review show only aerial views. “There is a hefty chunk of hillside that is going to be opened up,” DRB chairman Scott Rieley said. “We understand it’s going to get built. Let’s make sure that it’s done as well as possible.” The board also required the state to enhance landscaping on the south side of the property to build a buffer between the project and homes to the south. Neighboring property owner Doug Williams lamented the loss of woods in favor of buildings and pavement. “My property value is going to see BARRACKS page18
