Whether you are a new town resident or perhaps a new business owner, Williston has much to offer. Good schools, excellent parks, a top-notch library and quality municipal services combine to make Williston an attractive place to live, work and shop. Below are some facts about Williston that you may not know: l It was selected as the best place to raise children by “Bloomberg Businessweek” l It leads the State of Vermont in total retail sales l It has one of the lowest municipal tax rates in Chittenden County l It received the highest (best) score in a Vermont Ethan Allen Institute study on the financial condition of Vermont’s 30 most populous communities.

Williston’s long-term plan articulates a vision of protecting the open spaces and village center of town while concentrating development in a limited area of the community. In fact, Williston has won many awards for its planning efforts.

This effort is reflected in the town’s motto: “Old town charm, new town spirit.”

You’ll find your neighbors to be welcoming, and we encourage you to get involved with the community. There are many opportunities, depending on your interests. This includes various recreational, cultural and social activities. Selectboard This five-member elected board is responsible for setting the town’s general policy direction, passing ordinances, setting the tax rate, reviewing the budget, supervising the town manager and a host of other related responsibilities. This three-member elected board is charged with determining the value of real estate in Williston. Property val-

ues determined by the board serve as a base for property tax collections. The town assessor provides professional assistance. Together, they inspect new and changed property, compile and analyze sales data, provide the public with assessment information, supply the Department of Property Valuation and Review with reports and perform other miscellaneous duties.

A: Williston Town Hall, which houses most municipal offices, is at 7900 Williston Rd. It is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. The town’s website is www. town.williston.vt.us.

Q: Where is the Williston Post Office A: The post office is located at 82 Blair Park Rd. and can be reached at 879-5257.

Q: Where do I go to vote?

A: All voting for registered voters in Williston takes place at the Williston Armory at 7846 Williston Rd., next to Town Hall. Election day voting hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Election information is available in the Town Clerk section of the website at www.town.williston. vt.us or by calling the Town Clerk’s office at 878-5121.

Q: How do I apply for a building permit?

A: Call the Planning Office at 8786704. You may also want to visit the Planning and Zoning Department section of the town website, or email Town Planner Matt Boulanger at mboulanger@willistonvt.org.

Q: When are dog licenses due and how much do they cost?

A: Dog licenses are due April

1. The fee is $13 for dogs that are spayed or neutered and $17 if the dog is not spayed or neutered.

Proof of a current rabies vaccine is required. After April 1, the fees increase to $17 and $23. By state statute, all dogs in town must be licensed each year by April 1. Call the Williston Town Clerk’s office at 878-5121 or stop by at 7900 Williston Rd. Q: Where do I get rid of trash and recyclables?

A: The Chittenden Solid Waste District drop-off center at 1492 Redmond Road accepts trash and recyclables for a fee. It is open Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m.3:30 p.m. Call 872-8111 for more information. Also, two transfer stations — at 1496 Redmond Rd. and 220 Avenue B — accept larger loads of trash. The Materials Recovery Center at 357 Avenue C accepts large loads of recyclables. Its hours are Monday through Friday 6 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Visit www.cswd. net for more information.

Q: Why did the town initiate a stormwater fee?

A: In past years, stormwater services were funded through the town’s general fund with revenue generated through municipal taxes.

As both state and federal stormwater requirements become more

stringent and a Lake Champlain cleanup effort continues, municipalities are required to invest more resources toward stormwater management. Accordingly, an ordinance creating a dedicated stormwater budget funded through a stormwater fee was adopted by the Selectboard in 2014. Stormwater bills are processed quarterly and are due on the following dates: March 31, June 30, Sept. 30 and Dec. 31.

Q: Who should I call if the town snowplow takes out my mailbox?

A: If you live on a town road, call the Williston Public Works Department at 878-1239. If you live on a state road (Williston Road or Route 2A, for example), the state may replace your mailbox depending on the situation. Call 655-1580 for more information.

Q: Does the fire department offer smoke detectors to residents at no charge?

A: Yes. Call 878-5622 to request one. Supplies are limited.

Q: What is a CLA? A: The CLA (Common Level of Appraisal) represents the percentage at which property assessments are currently valued. As the years after a re-appraisal pass, the CLA will typically drop below 100 percent.

Williston schools

Williston has a single school system divided into two schools. Allen Brook School serves preschool through second grade, and Williston Central School serves third grade through eighth grade. Students and staff are organized into multi-age learning communities called “houses” within the schools. Students attend Champlain Valley Union High School in Hinesburg for grades 9-12.

Williston is part of the Champlain Valley School District, which also covers the towns of Hinesburg, Charlotte, Shelburne and St. George.

People have lived in the area that is now Williston dating back 8,000 years. The Abenaki people lived here prior to the first European settlers, who arrived in the 1700s. The Abenaki tended to live along waterways such as the Winooski River, Allen Brook and Muddy Brook.

Higher elevations, such as Five Tree Hill, were used as lookouts to site herds of caribou or deer. Wetlands and ponds, such as Mud Pond and Lake Iroquois, were rich in wildlife and served as hunting grounds.

European settlement began in the 1770s. Thomas Chittenden, an early Williston settler, became Vermont’s first governor. His home was located on what is now Governor Chittenden Road.

NEIGHBORHOODS WILLISTON VILLAGE Most of the homes and municipal buildings in the historic village district were built in the nineteenth century. The streetscape is also old: large stately trees, mature shrubs, m a n y we l l - t e n d e d lawns. The variety of architectural styles, including the brick Greek revival buildings that dominate the core of the village give stature and distinction to the district.

Exceptions to this historic setting a re Williston Central School, Dorothy Alling Memorial Library and the bandstand. These add significantly to the character of the village, bringing vitality and a sense of community. Although unseen from Williston Road, playing fields behind the school and a paved rec path provide athletic and recreational opportunities for children and adults.

MEADOW RUN This small neighborhood is tucked into the corner of

Route 2A and Mountain View Road. In addition to Meadow Run Road, it also includes Whitewater Circle and Forest Run Road.

After the ent rance, which has a white fence on the left and trees on the right, the road splits. Meadow Run Road heads to the left, with Whitewater Circle going right before connecting back with Meadow Run, which extends in a tail. Forest stems off the tail.

The vast majority of houses are beautiful single-story duplexes, all tan in color.

INDIAN RIDGE This family neighborhood centers around Isham Circle, and also contains the dead-end Bingham and Winslow lanes. Chamberlin Lane c o n ne c t s t he neig h borhood with Brennan Woods to the north. Hanging signs at both ends of the Isham Circle loop identify Indian Ridge.

The Taft Farms Association maintains a small park for neighborhood members, with a swing, bench, basketball courts and a pool.

large recreation park at the school, and the Williston Village Bike Path also runs through the neighborhood, connecting it to the town center.

ST. GEORGE ROAD South on Route 2A past the shopping centers, toward the small town of St. George, is an area full of crabapple trees as far as Butternut Road. To the east, one can see Five Tree Hill, and to the west, Brownell Mountain.

The Seventh Day Adventist Church is prominent among the old homes along this road. At the corner of Old Creamery Road and Route 2A are newer homes built with views west toward Burlington.

NORTH SIDE OF OLD CREAMERY ROAD North of Old Creamery Road are Bradley Lane, Farm View Road, Oak Knoll, Highlands Drive, Oak Hill Estates and Porterwood Drive.

NEIGHBORHOODS and dates back to 1791. Knob Hill has a few homes separated by woods, and at the end of the road is a beacon that flashes red to warn incoming planes of the high altitude.

Oak Knoll is its own community with many homes having views of the Sunset Hill and Five Tree Hill hiking trail. As you travel further on this road, it dips down, and there are secluded homes on wooded lots.

Highlands Drive is the second highest hillside of homes south of Route 2. These are large, newer homes with views of Burlington, South Burlington, Essex Junction, New York and Lake Champlain. Coming south down Interstate 89, they can clearly be seen on the hillside.

Porterwood Drive is a close-knit group of homes — a setting where children can play and walk safely away from traffic.

FINNEY CROSSING Fin ney Crossing is Williston’s largest subdivision and has been built over the past eight years. Located in the Taft Corners growth center, it features houses and apartments, as well as a series of walking paths and small park areas. In addition to housing, the mixed-use development includes retail and office space. The project’s developers are Snyder Companies, which built the homes, and J.L. Davis Inc., which developed the commercial part of Finney Crossing that

includes a grocery store, bank and hotel. The development has been described as a key component of the town’s plan to create a pedestrian-friendly downtown.

MEADOW RIDGE/SOUTH WILLISTON This area of Williston is more rural with lots of open land and spectacular views of Mt. Mansfield, Camel’s Hump and Bolton Valley. Getting closer to Lake Iroquois, one can enjoy the scene of Mt. Pritchard and its hillside.

Many homes in this area are close to the road and over 50 years old. One has a feeling of living in a quiet, safe and clean environment.

There are three public trails in the area — Oak View Hill, Mud Pond and Mud Pond Country Park — for all to enjoy nature and wildlife habitat. Meadow Ridge is a newer development of homes built into the hillside off South Road with views west along the interstate. The homes are secluded from one another and private, yet the neighborhood is a community of its own. The main roads in this area are mostly flat and enjoyed by runners and bikers.

SUNSET HILL This area is comprised of Sunset Hill Road, Five Tree Hill Road, Hassett Lane, McJay Drive, Lyman Drive, Pebble

Lane, Elk Lane and Deer Run. Aptly named, the area is graced with the most beautiful sunsets over Lake Champlain seen from Sunset Hill Road as well as a view of mountains to the east.

There are many old homes along the roads, with a cluster of newer homes on and just off Sunset Hill Road. Three of Williston’s oldest farms have been renovated and improved in this area: the Sutton Farm, Talcott Farm and Merchant Farm.

The Five Tree Hill public trail is off Sunset Road with a spectacular view from its high peak of Burlington to the west. The two main roads provide a square shape of about 3 miles for runners and walkers.

SOUTH BROWNELL AREA As you travel down Walker Hill Road toward South Brownell, the view is of Burlington, South Burlington, the Adirondacks and Lake Champlain. The Lacasse Farm at the end of this road developed land in such a way that new homes are not seen but built back from the road and in wooded areas, keeping many open fields and giving the feeling of a rural see NEIGHBORHOODS page 14

area. South Brownell Road is commercial with businesses from Route 2 to Marshall Avenue and just before the interstate bridge.

Van Sicklen Road is a short road, about a mile, that connects to Route 116.

Shunpike Road has become a shortcut from South Brownell to the mostly commercial Marshall Avenue, populated with many businesses.

BRENNAN WOODS The entrance to this family neighborhood lies on the south side of Mountain View Road in the northern part of Williston. Maple trees line the entrance into the neighborhood on Brennan Woods Drive. Once inside the neighborhood, manicured lawns line the quiet, residential streets — Brennan Woods Drive, Hanon Drive, O’Neil Lane, Casey Lane, Sadler Lane and Barrett Lane.

The neighborhood has its own Brennan Park, with three baseball fields, a small playground, Williston Community Gardens and parking for 40 cars. The park has been used for Little League games for 20 years.

The southern part of Brennan Woods, where Brennan Woods Drive crests a hill and becomes Chamberlin Drive,

offers views toward Taft Corners and New York’s Adirondack Mountains.

RIVER COVE ROAD West of Route 2A at the River Cove Animal Hospital, a cluster of neighborhoods appears at Savage Court, Terry Lane and Palmer Court, as well as small apartment and condominium complexes on Shirley Circle and Twitchell Court. The road then quickly becomes a forested country road, passing secluded Shady Lane on the left and proceeding gently downhill to the Griswold Farm and crossing Muddy Brook into South Burlington.

Mount Mansfield, Camel's Hump and other Green Mountain peaks. It winds its way west and uphill past the Catamount Outdoor Family Center before joining with North Williston Road. The middle portion of Governor Chittenden Road is closed in winter.

North Williston Road begins in the center of Williston Village and heads due north past the Williston Golf Club, farmland and newer housing developments. It then drops into a wooded ravine and past the community of Williston Woods before flattening out at the Winooski River.

The area of North Williston is known for its wide open expanses, especially along the aptly named Mountain View Road, which heads westward from North Williston Road toward Route 2A. At Adams Farm Market, Old Stage Road leaves Mountain View Road heading south, passing farmland before becoming more residential as it enters Williston Village.

SOUTHRIDGE NORTH WILLISTON T he neighborhood of North Williston has a large swath of forests and hills, bordered on the north and east by the Winooski River. Route 2 lines the southern portion of the neighborhood, looping eastward down French Hill toward Richmond.

NEIGHBORHOODS LAMPLITE ACRES The Lamplite Acres neighborhood of Williston is close to much of the bustling activity of Taft Corners, but also quiet and removed as well. Surrounded by tall pines, the area encompasses quiet streets, including White Birch, Aspen, Lamplite and Pine lanes.

The main route through the neighborhood is North Brownell Road, which connects between Route 2 and Industrial Avenue. Rossignol Park is at the northern end of North Brownell. The neighborhood is flanked by routes 2 and 2A, along with Industrial Avenue, giving the area quick and convenient access to some of the major businesses in and around Taft Corners.

GOLF LINKS Driving north on North Williston Road, past the Williston Golf Club, is Golf Links: a horseshoe loop made up of Tamarack Drive and Fairway Drive. Homes on the ridge look down at the comings and goings of traffic to and from North Williston Road. Golf Links residents have the advantage of being close to the village. Their view to the west includes Burlington and the Adirondack Mountains of New York and, in some spots, a sliver of Lake Champlain.

PLEASANT ACRES

FRENCH HILL East of Williston Village, beyond the Thomas Chittenden and East cemeteries, Route 2 becomes a heavily wooded, winding road down French Hill to the Winooski Valley. Numerous homes are nestled in the trees along the road, leading to the Sunrise neighborhood. At Governor Chittenden Road, the highway quickly straightens

It is dotted with clotheslines, swing sets and basketball hoops. It boasts a wonderful view of a full night sky without interference, and a spectacular view of Mt. Mansfield, Bolton Valley and Camel’s Hump.

Residents can take advantage of the town’s primitive path

in their backyards. Across the road on the corner of Mountain View and North Williston roads was once the home of The Stovepipe School, Williston’s last one-room schoolhouse, which was moved to the village green in the 1990s, where it is preserved today and owned by the town.

HERITAGE MEADOW Driving north from the village on Old Stage Road, just before Adam’s Farm Market is Heritage Meadow. Made up of a tree-lined street — Wildf lower Circle — that loops back to its entrance, the neighborhood has two-story multi-generational homes with ample room between each lot and spacious backyards.

The front of the neighborhood offers two large swaths of common land shared by all the neighbors and protected from further development. The homes were built in the open, flat meadow of a farm once owned by Bernard and Virginia Boyer, with the stipulation that the views to the east would not be obstructed so all could enjoy Mt. Mansfield and Camel’s Hump, as well as Bolton Valley Ski Area.

In close proximity to all that the village and Taft Corners have to offer, Wildflower Circle nonetheless retains a sense of rural charm due to the large open meadow and horse farm across the road. see NEIGHBORHOODS page 16

The Town of Williston continues to grow, with major housing and commercial developments currently under construction FINNEY CROSSING (COMMERCIAL) Williston enjoys an abundance of housing for senior citizens. Williston Woods off North Williston Road on the way to Essex offers single family housing with its own community center and neighborhood association. In Williston Village, Whitney Hill provides congregate housing within walking distance of churches, town offices and schools. the first phase of a 40-home development on 44 acres off Metcalf Drive. The first phase will consist of a mix of 21 single-family, duplex and triplex homes, as well as a pool, a common building and two new streets.

COTTONWOOD CROSSING (MIXED-USE) This five-phase mixed-use development is in the early stages of construction on 17 acres along Route 2 next to Maple Tree Place.

Phase one consists of three buildings totaling 35,000 square feet of commercial/restaurant space and 46 one- and two-bedroom apartments.

In total, roughly 70,000 square feet of commercial space and 200 residences are planned. The buildings will be two and three stories tall with underground parking.

The project is designed in quadrants around a central square. Community Bank has committed to building and occupying one of the commercial buildings with its regional headquarters.

Green Mountain Transit serves Williston with two bus routes. The Red Line begins at Walmart/Taft Corners and follows Williston Road into South Burlington, Burlington and into Burlington's New North End. It operates daily.

The Orange Line runs between Walmart/Maple Tree Place through Five Corners in Essex Junction and into the Essex Experience in the Town of Essex. It operates Monday through Saturday.

Fares for both routes are $1.50. For child ren ages 6-17 and people over the age of 60, the fare is 75 cents.

COMMUNITY PARKS Williston Community Park

park has two multi-purpose fields and a path that connects with the neighborhoods of Talcott Road and Coyote Lane.

Expansion plans include new ball fields, tennis, pickleball and baseketball courts, playground structures and a pavilion.

Brennan Park & Community Gardens

Located behind Williston Central School at 250 Library Lane, this park offers separate playgrounds for school-age children and toddlers, four sand volleyball courts, a soccer field, a Little League field, multi-purpose fields and a lighted skate park, which is converted to a skating rink in the winter.

A 12-hole disc golf course is located west of the fields.

A 1.1-mile paved rec path runs through the park. It is an excellent destination for all kids of recreation.

Allen Brook Community Park

Fields, courts and amenities open mid-April (weather permitting) and close at the end of October.

Lake Iroquois

Located at 110 Brennan Woods Drive, this park has three Little League fields, a playground structure for younger children (2-5 years old) and a climbing structure for children 5-12 years old. Next to the park is the Williston Community Gardens. The garden has 16 large and small plots for Williston residents.

Rossignol Park

Located at 497 Talcott Road at Allen Brook School, this

Located at 541 Industrial Ave, this park is sheltered and great for families. The park has two tennis courts with pickleball lines, a basketball court, a small picnic pavilion, Little League field and a playground structure. Parking is available off of Industrial Avenue.

The towns of Hinesburg, Williston, St. George and Richmond surround Lake Iroquois. The towns have agreed to manage the lakeshore through a special district. The Lake Iroquois Recreation District owns, leases, develops, maintains and manages property around the lake for public recreation and conservation.

The district’s public beach area, along with its 150 acres of open land, is for the use of residents of member towns as well as non-residents. These lands provide access to swimming, picnicking, playground equipment and walking trails.

The beach area is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Annual beach passes are available for a fee at the Town Clerk’s Office at 7900 Williston Rd. Day passes can be purchased at a ticket booth at the beach.

FORESTS, TRAILS AND NATURAL AREAS

Catamount Community Forest

The Catamount Community Forest is the newest addition to Williston’s protected open space. The nearly 400-acre property has been a well-loved destination for a diversity of outdoor recreation for the last four decades.

The land, acquired by the town in 2019, serves as a town forest and is managed by the nonprofit Catamount Outdoor Family Center for mountain biking, Nordic skiing, environmental education and other year-round public access.

While some activities, such as skiing and mountain biking require purchase of a trail pass, pedestrian access (walking, running, snowshoeing) is free. Visitors are asked to sign in before venturing out on the trails.

CATAMOUNT RULES AND GUIDELINES

Dogs are not allowed on the property. l Catamount Community Forest is open for pedestrian access (walking/hiking/running/snowshoeing) free of charge. l A trail pass is required for mountain/fat biking and cross-country skiing. l Pedestrian users are asked to sign into the register at the ticket counter. l During winter when trails are snow-covered, snowshoes must be used by pedestrians to protect the surface of the trails. l Trails are open from dawn until dusk, conditions permitting. l Trails are subject to closure as warranted by conditions such as spring thaw and other weather conditions/events. l Walkers should be aware of other users, races, camps and special events and exercise caution accordingly. l There is no hunting allowed on the property. l

No matter the season, the Catamount Community Forest has recreational options. Winter walks, snowshoes and Nordic ski outings give way to running, hiking and mountain biking in the warmer months. The property is home to numerous running and mountain biking races that draw competitors from across the Northeast.

FORESTS, TRAILS AND NATURAL AREAS The Town of Williston has a growing portfolio of conserved public natural areas with trail networks that are managed by the Williston Conservation Commission and planning department staff.

These seven designated natural areas total more than 500 acres, with 12 miles of trails. The natural areas and trails are maintained by town staff with the help of local volunteers. l Allen Brook Nature Trail l Five Tree Hill Country Park l Mud Pond Conservation Area l Mud Pond Country Park l Oak View Hill Trail l Sucker Brook Hollow Country Park l Catamount Community Forest (Please refer to the map on page 18 for locations) Mountain biking and fat biking are allowed at Mud Pond Country Park and Catamount when trails are not muddy. Trails are closed to biking during the spring mud season from April 1 to May 1. To prevent trail erosion, town staff recommends limiting all trail usage during mud season, and reserves the right to close trails when conditions warrant.

Dogs are not allowed at Catamount, but feel free to bring them to the other natural areas. Clean up after dogs and be courteous of others by keeping dogs in control at all times.
