OUR FOCUS At Vermont Plank Flooring, our goal is to offer customers the best wide plank flooring in the world. We achieve that through unparalleled standards, individualized service, and unbeatable value. The quality of our product begins in the forest. Our flooring comes from the healthiest, fully mature trees, sustainably grown and selectively harvested by small, private New England woodlot owners with whom we’ve worked for decades. With that high quality lumber as our starting point, we are able to mill the widest and longest planks in the industry, with dimensions often two-to-three times what you’ll find elsewhere. Our quest for quality continues through the milling process, where each plank we produce is carefully assessed and graded to meet our exacting standards.

As each of those planks are handcrafted specifically for your project, we produce them exactly to your requirements. You choose the species, solid hardwood versus engineered, the plank lengths and widths, the grade, the saw technique, and the finishing product and tinting. We’ll be by your side providing as much or as little support as you need. You’ll be pleasantly surprised to find our superior service, choice, and quality don’t translate into sticker shock. Our small, family-run business is lean and nimble, operating with low overhead and mill-direct wholesale pricing so we can provide you with simply gorgeous custom wood flooring at a surprisingly affordable price. That’s our mission, and we do it well.

OUR STORY

THREE GENERATIONS, PLUS A FRIENDSHIP Jack’s son Mark joined the company in 1980, helping it grow roots in a community and supply chain that persist to this day. Meanwhile, Howard Mathison, who had grown a successful cabinet-making business in Minnesota during the 1970s, was moving his business to Massachusetts. Howard and Mark met and struck up a friendship.

Like most American business success stories, Vermont Plank Flooring was born of a degree of foresight, a little bit of luck, and a lot of hard work. Our involvement in the wood business started in 1946 when Jack Tarmy started driving a lumber truck making deliveries in the Boston area. By 1958, he had his own company, selling the finest New England timber to customers around the world.

In 1989, Mark and Howard joined forces and started crafting custommade, wide-plank flooring from a mill in Brattleboro, Vermont. They named it Vermont Plank Flooring, and began to mill the best floors in the business. Thirty years later, a third generation of Tarmys is helping guide the business into the future without losing sight of Jack’s guiding principle: the best product for the best price.

SUSTAINABLE, EARTHFRIENDLY FLOORING. FSC - CERTIFIED Vermont Plank Flooring is committed to sustaining our valuable forests and maintaining the earth’s precious ecosystem for generations to come. We are fully certified by the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC) for both newly sawn and reclaimed wood floors and millwork. Vermont Plank’s newly sawn floors are certified as coming exclusively from 100% sustainably-managed forests— the highest and most prestigious FSC® award level. Additionally, our reclaimed floors, coming from 100to-200 year old structures destined for demolition, are certified by FSC® as having a documented chain-of-custody from the structure directly to our mill. We wear the FSC® badge with pride. From a business perspective, it makes unquestionable sense.

Harvesting sustainably managed, mature trees provides us with the highest quality raw material from which to mill our flooring, a critical starting point for a spectacular finished product. It also maintains the health of the forest, guaranteeing high quality raw materials for decades and generations to come. From an ethical perspective, we believe it is our duty to champion our planet’s health by minimizing our impact however we can, and by working exclusively with forest owners and material suppliers who can be trusted to do the same. It’s simply the right thing to do—for our business, for the quality of our products, for the earth, and for our children and grandchildren.
