See the world-renowned National Music Museum, home to five centuries worth of musical instruments, and hike the historic Spirit Mound, a confirmed stopping point on the Lewis & Clark expedition. Camp in town or along the Missouri River, and fish, hunt, hike, and bike to your heart’s content out at Clay County Park. And, with an array of community events, concert series, sports tournaments, social service organizations, and volunteer opportunities, there’s never a shortage of things to do if you look.
OUR HISTORY
Vermillion is one of the oldest cities in South Dakota. The present site of Vermillion was first visited by French fur traders at the close of the 18th century. On August 24, 1804, Lewis and Clark camped at the mouth of the Vermillion River and from there made their trek to Spirit Mound. Afterward, numerous trappers and fur traders went up and down the river, and the Columbia Fur Company established a trading post at the river’s mouth. By 1860, the Yankton Sioux were forcibly moved to government lands and the Dakota Territory was opened to homesteaders. Vermillion grew and became a thriving community. The University of South Dakota was established in 1862 at the first meeting of the Territorial Legislature and is central to modern-day Vermillion.

Vermillion abounds with parades, festivals, sporting events, and historic celebrations. From the Shakespeare Festival to the Clay County Fair, from Ribs, Rods, and Rock N’ Roll to our very own Thursdays on the Platz summer music series, there is something for everyone in Vermillion. If you like history, visit the National Music Museum, the W.H. Over Museum, and the Austin-Whittemore House. Enjoy our local art with the Oscar Howe Gallery, the First Dakota National Bank Coyote Gallery, the University Galleries, or take a stroll in our historic downtown to view our community murals and sculpture walk. Take advantage of Vermillion’s outdoors by picnicking at Clay County Park or Cotton Park, hiking Spirit Mound, swimming at Prentis Plunge, golfing at The Bluffs, or kayaking the Missouri National Recreational River. The beating heart of Vermillion is our historic downtown, which recently got a new facelift to include benches, pedestrian areas, and greenery. In Vermillion, you can grab a coffee, buy gifts and clothing, go to dinner, and see a movie all within a two-block radius. When you are done downtown, don’t forget Cherry Street, where you can go grocery shopping, fuel up, or check out a home with one of our realtors. Getting Here CAN I FLY INTO VERMILLION? Vermillion does not have its own commercial airport, but it is located near a few cities that do! Sioux Falls is home to the Sioux Falls Regional Airport (FSD), the largest airport within an hour driving distance from Vermillion, and offers over 150 weekly flights with 10 direct flight destinations. The Sioux Gateway Airport (SUX), located in Sioux City, 39 minutes to the southeast, offers seasonal flights and three daily American Airlines nonstop flights.
HOW DO I REACH VERMILLION BY CAR? Vermillion is conveniently placed 6 miles (8 minutes) from the Highway 50 Interstate 29 junction. Sioux Falls is 63 miles (1 hour) north of Vermillion. Sioux City is 39.2 miles (41 minutes) southeast of Vermillion.
DO I NEED A CAR TO GET AROUND VERMILLION? Vermillion is definitely a walkable town, although you may want a car while visiting the surrounding areas, like Fleurish Flower Farms and Mulberry Bend Overlook (and likely during winter too).
ANY OTHER WAYS TO REACH YOU? The Vermillion Public Transit system is a great option. This system serves the community of Vermillion and its surrounding area, with five buses and two vans providing nearly 400 different customers with more than 5,000 rides per month. Give them a call at 605.624.7433 to schedule a ride while you are visiting us! There is also a Greyhound bus stop at 615 Jefferson St. where travelers can catch a ride to cities like Rapid City, Denver, Indianapolis, Oklahoma City and more! Top Seasonal Things to Do Spring FOOL’S 48 FILM FESTIVAL April 5–8 In this community favorite, local teams have 48 hours to write, shoot, and edit a short film. To add a challenge, each team draws a genre from a hat at the Friday evening kickoff event, and all teams must incorporate the same line of dialogue, prop, and location. Completed films will premiere Monday, April 8th at the Coyote Twin Theater. It’s always a blockbuster event!
Summer SD SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL June 2–9 The South Dakota Shakespeare Festival is a weeklong celebration of Shakespeare and the arts. The festivities include a feature production at Prentis Park, a Shakespeare film screening, the “Bark with the Bard” dog-inspired 5k, trivia nights, workshops for youth, and a wide array of community outreach events. This year’s production will be The Merchant of Venice, showing June 6–9 in Prentis Park. All showings are free of cost, though donations are welcome!
THURSDAYS ON THE PLATZ July 11–August 29 Thursdays on the Platz features live music and food vendors at Ratingen Platz in historic Downtown Vermillion. Enjoy food and drinks, socialize with friends, and take in the beautiful summer weather while listening to some great local musicians!

CLAY COUNTY FAIR August 8–10 Get ready for three days of animal shows, live music, cornhole tournaments, barbecue competitions, water wars, street dances, and more! See everything from 4-H competitions to chainsaw carvings to USD Herpetology exhibits. Fancy yourself an adrenaline junkie? See (or compete in!) the annual demolition derby. Fall & Winter RIBS, RODS & ROCK N’ ROLL September 6–7 When over 30 teams from across the Midwest come together to compete in a BBQ battle, you’re gonna want to check out what they’re cooking! Head to downtown Vermillion to celebrate the 20th year of this annual Vermillion tradition with food and drink (of course!), vendors, performances from local musicians, a cornhole tournament, a 5k color run, a classic car show, and more.
STANDSTILL PARADE OF LIGHTS December 5 Kick off the holiday season with the 9th Annual Standstill Parade of Lights in Downtown Vermillion! Come check out the floats designed by Vermillion area businesses, enjoy music and a performance by the Vermillion Area Dance Organization, and drink lots of hot chocolate. Then, see Santa Claus as he lights the Vermillion Christmas Tree! Following the tree lighting, Santa will be available for pictures at the Vermillion Public Library—don’t forget to bring your camera!

Dining Vermillion’s eateries offer a plethora of tasty meals, delicious treats, specialty coffees, cocktails, and beers and wines that are sure to delight the palette. Start your day off right with a coffee from The Bean Community Coffeehouse—we recommend the Yote Blend, The Bean’s specialty roast. For elaborate lattés and pastries, check out Café Brulé, which is also a great place to get breakfast, lunch, and dinner. If pizza is what you’re after, El Fredo’s is known for their incredible pies! Dakota Brick House also has a fantastic handtossed pizza option, though we would be remiss if we didn’t also mention their eclectic food menu that will satisfy any craving. While it might be a little off the beaten path, Whimp’s Steakhouse in Burbank, South Dakota is worth driving out to. If you’re out the other direction, stop by Toby’s Lounge in Meckling, South Dakota for their famous chicken. Want to stay in town? Hartford Steak Co. Tavern has a great steak menu. Stop in on a weekday for the best steak deal around: a 6 oz. filet mignon and sides for only $12.95! After dinner, experience Vermillion’s nightlife with staples like Carey’s Bar—celebrating 70 years in business in 2024!—and The Varsity Pub. Public Art COMMUNITY MURALS Vermillion is a thriving arts community, and some of the most celebrated pieces in Vermillion’s oeuvre are the murals adorning our historic downtown. These murals represent the spirit of Vermillion, from the Coyote Twin Pocket Park Mural—inspired by Vermillion sights and pastimes—to the Wanáhča and ˇ wrap murals—showcasing idenEúŋkičhetupi tity, femininity, and motherhood—to the new Vermillion Pride mural adorning the west side of Café Brulé.

Vermillion Pride Mural SCULPTURE WALK
In 2015, Vermillion joined the sculpture walk project, a program in which sculptures are installed in public spaces for a period of two years. Our sculpture walk is located along the streets of historic downtown and on the University of South Dakota campus. New sculptures will be installed May of 2024, and a new installation location will be added on the corner of Main and Court Streets outside of Cee Cee’s 605 Scratch Kitchen & Bar. One sculpture—Suddenly by Chris Wubbena— has become a permanent addition to downtown Vermillion. 16

Old Main, USD Campus The Oscar Howe Gallery holds the largest collection of work by internationally celebrated American Indian artist Oscar Howe, who served on the USD faculty for 25 years.

15 Austin St., Vermillion Built five years prior to South Dakota statehood, this house is one of the few surviving 19th century structures in the vicinity of Vermillion. Home of the Clay County Historical Society.

1110 N. University St., Vermillion The W. H. Over Museum is a privately-supported museum featuring the historical, natural, and cultural histories of South Dakota and the surrounding region. Today, the museum’s collection includes natural specimens, fossils, photographs, works of art, and archaeological artifacts.

In town, check out the Vermillion River Trail, which follows the Vermillion River, passes through Cotton Park, and continues via an underpass for a final rail-with-trail section. Looking to explore the outer reaches of Vermillion? Head north on Highway 19 to hike Spirit Mound for a stunning view of the prairie all around!

SNOWSHOEING
Boost your winter workout and build up your endurance throughout the winter by snowshoeing! Head down near the Missouri and Vermillion Rivers to find beautiful trails through the nearby forests.

The Missouri National Recreational River is only a 15-minute drive from Vermillion, and it’s a great place for experienced paddlers to get out on the water. Head down to Clay County Park, where you’ll find an excellent spot to launch your canoe or kayak. Make sure to wear your safety gear, as the river’s currents are quite strong! Kayaks can be rented from the local Ace Hardware store (812 Cottage Ave).
FISHING
There are more than 175 fishing lakes in our area of the state, and thanks to our close proximity to the Missouri River, fishing can easily be a local’s favorite pastime. The best part? The South Dakota fishing season never closes. The annual license is good for year-round fishing, so don’t delay!
SWIMMING Don’t forget to bring a swimsuit with you if you come to visit during the summer months! Vermillion’s state-of-the-art water park, Prentis Plunge, is something you won’t want to miss. Education VERMILLION SCHOOL DISTRICT Serving the Clay and Union County communities of Vermillion, Burbank, and Meckling, the Vermillion Public School District encompasses 200 square miles located near Interstate 29 in southeastern South Dakota.
