Sesdac, Inc. Renovation Project

We are pleased to announce the completion of Sesdac, Inc. Renovation Project. In efforts to continue to meet the needs of the people we support and make the building more welcoming and friendlier, we recognized that a renovation was needed.

Designed by Fiegen Construction, the project includes the renovation of all activity rooms and offices; created more private work spaces; updated the fitness area, break room and restrooms; and added an upgraded air filtration system, new carpet and new furniture for part of the building. Our group homes have also seen a new air filtration system and will get more updates like new paint and new carpet in the near future.

The entire cost was covered from grant funds received in early January, 2021. Thanks to a 2019 donation from Midwest Ready Mix & Equipment, Inc. we were finally able to acquire new equipment for the sensory room and transform it into a very relaxing and calming environment for the people we support. Recently we have resumed the Day Services Program at the Center and we are very pleased to see everyone’s reaction to those changes and hear all the positive and nice compliments.

We would like to thank everyone who was involved with this project: Fiegen Construction, Midwest Ready Mix & Equipment, Inc., and last, but not least, our entire Sesdac team for all the hard work and dedication.

“Gamelan: A Way of Life” opens March 25 in the Groves Gallery for Special Exhibitions

“Learning about gamelan music is learning about life,” according to gamelan master Midiyanto. Celebrate the music and instruments of the Kyai Rengga Manis Everist Gamelan and discover how gamelan is a reflection of Indonesian lessons, values, and culture.

Originating in Indonesia centuries ago and varying by region, Gamelan means “ensemble” and refers to a revered set of mostly percussion instruments, crafted and tuned to be played together. Themes to be explored in this special exhibit include: “Unity in Diversity,” “Permanence and Impermanence,” and the “Inevitable Gong.”

The exhibit is free and open to the public at the National Music Museum through the summer months on Thursdays and Fridays from 10 am to 4 pm and on Saturdays from 12 pm to 4 pm.

Updates from Lambeth Law Office

Lambeth Law Office is a general legal practice that seeks to provide compassionate legal representation to the people of southeastern South Dakota.

It has been a fun and busy year at Lambeth Law Office. Returning to Vermillion in April 2021, Lambeth Law Office has hit the ground running, with clients lined up well before its official restart date- people were calling Kasen for representation before he’d even announced his plans to resume his practice. This experience has been great for Kasen, who has successfully represented clients in ever more diverse fields of the law.

LLO (as it is affectionately referred to by Kasen and his wife Beth) was honored in June 2021 to be selected as the new legal services provider for the students of the University of South Dakota. In this regard, Kasen has been able to share his passion for helping others with the student body by such vehicles as the Know Your Rights campaign and passionate representation of those students who require a helping hand to guide them through their legal difficulties.

In July 2021, LLO was honored by the people of Vermillion and surrounding areas during its ribbon cutting, put on by the VCDC. Initially planning for a turnout of around 15, LLO received easily double that figure. Thankfully, Pizza Ranch and Varsity Pub saved the day by providing fresh pizza and drinks for hungry visitors!

LLO was graciously provided another opportunity to offer compassionate legal representation in September 2021 when it was offered a chance to serve as one of three public defenders for Union County. Because of this opportunity, LLO will also be opening a second office in Elk Point!

Kasen is genuinely touched by the massive outpouring of support that the Vermillion community has shown his business. If it weren’t for the wonderful community that is Vermillion, the efforts of the hardworking people at VCDC and VermillionNext, and all of those mentors along the way, Kasen’s dream of having a viable solo law practice would have never gained traction.
