We like to say we’re the Miami of South Dakota — located in the southeast corner of the state, we’re just an hour from the larger communities of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Sioux City, Iowa, and only two hours from Omaha, Nebraska.

Vermillion thrives as a diverse arts and culture hub in our region. Food lovers will adore the amazing local restaurants located along the street of our historic downtown which boasts in character and charm. We have everything from pizza to coffee to fair trade goods. It’s the kind of place you can get your nails and your finances done on the same block. Shoppers are enthralled by the unique retail shops like Sharing the Dream and Blue Monarch and you will be too! Cherry Street features dozens of bustling businesses to suit many of your needs. Bread and sandwich lovers must stop by Mister Smith’s Café & Catering, featured in Oprah Magazine where the “bread artistry” was named “The Best Bread in the World.”

The University of South Dakota, South Dakota’s flagship university, is home to some of the brightest and most talented minds in the country and fantastic Division I athletics. USD is a driving force behind Vermillion’s energy. The University is not only the largest employer in our hometown, but with an enrollment of over 7,000, the student body nearly doubles the city’s population while school is in session!

As the flagship university in the state, USD boasts South Dakota’s only law school and medical school. On campus, students learn the value of community and are always looking for ways to get involved.

Vermillion is a community of hand-raisers, do-gooders, and show-uppers. It’s a unique place where business owners, artists, retirees, and educators share coffee and conversation on Wednesday mornings; students and farmers eat at the same sandwich shop in the local hardware store; and everyone agrees on three things: #LOVermillion, Go Yotes, and we are the spirit of South Dakota.

Getting Here CAN I FLY INTO VERMILLION? Vermillion does not have its own commercial airport, but is located near a few cities that do! Sioux Falls is home to the Sioux Falls Regional Airport (FSD), which is the largest airport within an hour driving distance from Vermillion, and offers over 150 weekly flights with 10 direct flight destinations. The Sioux Gateway Airport (SUX), located in Sioux City, 39 minutes to the southeast, offers seasonal flights and three daily American Airlines nonstop flights.

HOW DO I REACH VERMILLION BY CAR? Vermillion is conveniently placed 6 miles (8 minutes) from the Highway 50 Interstate 29 junction. Sioux Falls is 63 miles (1 hour) north of Vermillion. Sioux City is 39.2 miles (41 minutes) southeast of Vermillion.

DOES VERMILLION HAVE ANY RIDESHARING OPTIONS? Vermillion is home to a few Lyft drivers who are happy to pick you up when you need a “lift!” Download the Lyft app to view their availability.

DO I NEED A CAR TO GET AROUND VERMILLION? Vermillion is definitely a walkable town, although you may want a car while visiting the surrounding areas (and likely during winter too).

ANY OTHER WAYS TO REACH YOU? The Vermillion Public Transit system is a great option. This system serves the community of Vermillion and its surrounding area, with five buses and two vans providing nearly 400 different customers with more than 5,000 rides per month. Give them a call at 605.624.7433 to schedule a ride while you are visiting us!

There is also a Greyhound bus station near McDonalds (702 N. Dakota St.) where travelers can catch a ride to cities like Rapid City, Denver, Indianapolis, Oklahoma City and more! Call 605.624.0018 for tickets or more information about where the Greyhound travels to.

The University of South Dakota has called Vermillion home since 1862. The beating heart of Vermillion is our historic downtown, which recently got a new facelift to include sidewalks and greenery. Top Seasonal Things to do Summer SOUTH DAKOTA ALL-STAR FOOTBALL (June 9th – June 11th) DakotaDome, Vermillion The South Dakota High School All-Star Football game will be played in Vermillion, SD on Saturday, June 11th. Players from across the state and all class divisions will represent their schools as they come together for practices and camaraderie during game-week preparations in Vermillion.

Join us in cheering on the all-stars from every football team in the state!

SOUTH DAKOTA SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL (June 16th – June 19th) Prentis Park, Vermillion The South Dakota Shakespeare Festival invites you to join us in a celebration of Shakespeare and the arts, including live performances of Shakespearean scenes, sonnets, and monologues, early modern music, a Shakespeare film screening, trivia night, workshops for youth, and a wide array of community outreach events.

This year’s production will be OTHELLO¸ written by William Shakespeare.

VERMILLION AREA FARMER’S MARKETS Corner of High and Cherry Street The Vermillion Area Farmers Market promotes locally grown produce, grain, dairy, and other food items and local artisan crafts by providing opportunities for local producers and local craftspeople to sell to local consumers.

It also provides for the education of the public about agricultural products and concerns, and on the benefits of locally grown and organic foods.

Thursday Markets are from 3 pm to 7 pm. Summer hours begin in May 19 and continue through October at the Clay County Fairgrounds.

Saturday Markets are from 9 am to noon, June through September, held in Downtown Vermillion on the Platz.

SPIRIT MOUND

31148 SD-19, Vermillion Established in 2002, the Spirit Mound Historic Prairie is a state park in Clay County featuring a prominent hill on the Great Plains.

The Plains Indians of the region considered Spirit Mound the home of dangerous spirits (or “devils”). Members of the Lewis and Clark Expedition climbed the hill on August 25th, 1804.

Spirit Mound gives a fantastic view of the area from the peak, and is also a popular spot for star gazers, especially on moon-less nights.

DOWNTOWN VERMILLION

VALIANT VINEYARDS WINERY 1500 W. Main St., Vermillion Wine lovers must make a visit to South Dakota’s first and oldest winery to enjoy the Bed & Breakfast and the spectacular views of the Vermillion River.

Stop in and one of their wine experts will guide you through an original South Dakota wine and spirits tasting experience!

In the summer months, spend a Sunday afternoon on their balcony enjoying one of their monster Bloody Mary’s. They make their own mix and add their pepper infused SD vodka.

Visit the flagship building of USD, home to the largest collection of artworks from Oscar Howe, internationally celebrated American Indian artist.

Vermillion’s main cultural district fills the most historic section of the city. If you’re looking for uniquely local, downtown is the place to go, with tons of shops, local restaurants, and bars lining the streets. Also adorning the sidewalk area is new sculptures! Try to find to find them all!

What’s summer without a visit to Southeast South Dakota’s premier aquatic center?

See South Dakota’s largest collection of natural and cultural history. The W.H. Over collection includes rocks, minerals, fossils, works of art, and items representing the inhabitants and various ethnic groups who call South Dakota home.

Slide down one of two slides, float along the 180-foot lazy river, swim laps in the 25-meter pool, or splash about in several open play areas including a zero-depth entry pool.

AUSTIN-WHITTEMORE HOUSE 15 Austin St., Vermillion Austin-Whittemore House, the brick Italian villa built in 1882, is now home to the Clay County Historical Society Museum. It’s a one-stop shop for those wanting to learn more about Vermillion history or research their ancestors.

Not only does the Coyote Twin house the only theater in a 30-mile radius, but it is also home to the First Dakota National Bank Coyote Gallery, a rotating art space featuring local makers, photographers, painters, sculptors, and cultural exhibits.

Recognized as “A Landmark of American Music” by the National Music Council, the National Music Museum is one of the most renowned institutions of its kind in the world.

This gallery is updated each month, making it a great place for locals and visitors alike to support Vermillion’s art and culture community. Come visit for the day, take in a movie and a spot of retail shopping too.

With more than 15,000 musical instruments, the NMM’s collections are among the best anywhere. Recognized by the New York Times as a “musical Smithsonian… whose galleries teem with masterpieces,” the NMM attracts thousands of visitors each year.

The museum is currently undergoing an extensive renovation, but special exhibits are open for patrons to enjoy while permanent exhibits are being created.

On the water CANOE & KAYAKING The Missouri National Recreational River is only a 15-minute drive from Vermillion, and it’s a great place for experienced paddlers to get out on the water. Head down to Clay County Park, where you’ll find an excellent spot to launch your canoe or kayak. Make sure to wear your safety gear, as the river’s currents are quite strong! Kayaks can be rented from the local Ace Hardware store (812 Cottage Ave).

FISHING There are more than 175 fishing lakes in our area of the state, and thanks to our close proximity to the Missouri River, fishing can easily be a local’s favorite pastime. The best part?

The South Dakota fishing season never closes. The annual license is good for year-round fishing, so don’t delay!

Get your fishing supplies from Wal-Mart and the Pump ‘N Pack; boat supplies can be found at Mart Marine.

SWIMMING Don’t forget to bring a swimsuit with you if you come to visit during the summer months! Vermillion’s state-of-the-art water park, the Prentis Plunge, is something you won’t want to miss. The heated pool features a lazy river, slides, splash pad, lap swim, concession stand, and plenty of lounge chairs for you to enjoy.

ICE FISHING Are you a sportsman with a warm disposition and a down parka? Ice fishing can be a great relief to cabin fever. The lakes in the Vermillion Area have a large population of perch, bluegill, crappie, and many other species of fish. Pack a thermos of your favorite hot beverage!

The course is a favorite destination point for golfers of all skill levels. Carved from the natural topography of the region, the Par 72 layout tests golfers from the beginning with water on five of the first six holes.

DISC GOLFING Fan of disc golf? Vermillion offers a couple of courses for beginners and experts alike. Head down to Barstow Park on Cherry St. to enjoy the 10-basket course. You can also play a round at Prentis Park on Clark St. (also 10 baskets) and enjoy time outside with friends and family.

All of the outdoor-lovers out there will be thrilled to explore the Vermillion Area via trails in and around the city.

In town, check out the Vermillion River Trail, which begins just off of W. Broadway St., which follows the Vermillion River, passes through Cotton Park, and continues via an underpass for a final rail-with-trail section. Looking to explore the outer reaches of Vermillion? Head north on Highway 19 toward Spirit Mound State Historic Prairie.

There you will find a trail which leads to a confirmed Lewis and Clark exploration point.

SNOWSHOEING Boost your winter workout and build up your endurance throughout the winter by snowshoeing!

It’s an easy and enjoyable way to get outside during the snowy winter days. All you need is a sense of adventure and some good boots. If you can walk, you can snowshoe!

Head down near the Missouri and Vermillion Rivers to find beautiful trails through the nearby forests.

CAMPING Grab a tent (or an RV) and come camp with us! If you are looking to stay within city limits, head down to the corner of Princeton and High Streets and set up your campsite at Lion’s Park. If you are looking to rough it in the great outdoors, Clay County Park is an area favorite for camping. It’s only a 15-minute drive outside of town, and its location near the Missouri River makes it a beautiful spot to pitch a tent and enjoy a campfire.

Community Connection Center mural

EÚŋKIČHETUPI: COME BACK TO LIFE Vermillion’s vibrant downtown bespeaks a community blessed by the creative milieu of a university town. Home to prodigious murals by artists Dick Termes and Rick Johns, two new public paintings have recently emerged on the walls of the Coyote Twin Theater.

Eúŋkičhetupi, Lakota for “Come Back to Life” was born in community meetings held by lead artists, Reyna Hernandez, Inkpa Mani, and Liz Skye, and assisted by Jenae Porter and USD Assistant Professor Amber Hansen. The mural incorporates varying perspectives from members of the Vermillion community on topics ranging from identity, water, motherhood, landscape, femininity, and the importance of representation. Through conversations with community members, the artists of the mural found importance in creating a space for women, specifically indigenous women.

Together, the mural brings focus to the importance of sharing contemporary indigenous narratives and honoring tradition.

The Community Connection Center (CCC) is home to the United Way of Vermillion, the Welcome Table, Vermillion Food Pantry, and other critical services.

It is also home to a beautiful, brand new mural. The room that hosts the mural is the Leroy N. Meyer Community Room and it’s the largest room at the CCC. Susan Heggestad was the local teaching artist who led the mural project. The creation of the mural was in part supported by a project grant from the SD Arts Council. The mural is 43.5’x8.5’ and features local landmarks as well as symbols of the community and support.

Visitors can now visit and bear witness to a beautifully completed mural as the second wall was completed in May 2020. Titled Wanáȟča, translated to “Flower that Blooms” from Lakota, the second part of the mural fills a larger area than the first, and serves as the visual introduction to the story depicted in Eúŋkičhetup by portraying a Native woman “breathing life” into the rest of the scene as she braids her hair, which flows into the Missouri River and the water that is the central theme in the first mural.

15 Austin St., Vermillion Built five years prior to South Dakota statehood, this house is one of the few surviving 19th century structures in the vicinity of Vermillion. Austin came from one of the first groups of settlers to arrive in, what it was known as at the time, Dakota, in 1859.

Vermillion Community Theatre Home to amateur theatre in Vermillion, the VCT takes pride in mounting ambitious productions that draw upon the enthusiasm and rich talent pool that runs throughout our community. Each summer they host a production at the Vermillion High School.

Sculpture Walk
