Lakeland College Rodeo Club Hosts Fall Classic Rodeo

The rodeo has been a large part of college life at Lakeland College for over 40 years. This past weekend the Lakeland College Rodeo Club hosted its annual Fall Classic Rodeo filled with fast-paced rodeo action in Bareback/ Saddlebronc, Pole Bending, Tie Down Roping, Breakaway Roping, Saddlebronc, Goat Tying, Bull Riding, Steer Wrestling, Barrel Racing, and Team Roping for all to see.

On Saturday the event started with the Slack, moving into the timed rodeo performances at 6:30 p.m. completed by

competitors from Alberta and Saskatchewan.

In the Pole Bending Jade Nelson came in first with a time of 22.502, with Kamryn Gilliland of Lakeland College second with a time of 22.506 and Kacee Ward third completing the pole bending in 22.611. Rachel Moat took the fastest time in Barrel Racing with a time of 14.525, with Madalyn Fraser from Lakeland College taking second with a time of 14.543 and Quincy Squair also from Lakeland College taking third with a time of 14.571.

In the Goat Tying on Saturday, Emily Pugsley tied the fastest with a time of

8.78, Alex Mcdonald second with a time of 9.63, and Jade Nelson third with a time of 10.56.

S o m e r e s u l t s f r o m S a t u r d a y ’s events have unofficial times and will be published later.

Sunday wasn’t a day of disappointment as the crowds were entertained with the same events hosted on Saturday.

The announcer for the event was Neil Branden, judges were Kyle Rock and Scott Griffin, pick-up men – Dustin Gintaut and Darcy McKinney, bullfighters Josh Haeberle and Cole Grinde, TimersBecky Demmans and Marilee Taylor and stock contractors were C5 Rodeo, Foley Bucking Bulls and Thompson Rodeo.

The rodeo followed the Restrictions Exemption Program where attendees were required to provide proof of vaccination, or a negative COVID-19 test completed within 72 hours of the event, and masking when inside the equine centre.

In Memory Of Our Dear Friend

Bill McGrath was an inspiration to many over the years. His story-telling ability often put people at ease and he warmed their hearts with his casual demeanour and positive outlook.

He was always willing to share a tale about his many adventures, whether hunting or travelling the countryside. He always had a knack for remembering friendly faces in the community, often visiting and willing to lend a helping hand.

Some remember Bill for his years of service with DHL, others for his volunteering with 4H. He was never an idle man, and some had the pleasure of sampling his homemade baking, or admiring the vibrant geraniums he had nurtured through many winters.

He was always incredibly proud of his children and grandchildren, nieces and nephews. For a man a born in 1932, he had 89 years of experience and an undeniable ability to carry on. To be frank, I think his energy just made everyone else envious.

For us he not only provided newspaper delivery, but offered friendly encouragement or even a giggle to lighten the atmosphere.

Publisher, Sue Chikie, said that Bill came to the Vermilion Voice as a delivery person to all the rural communities we distribute to, and he would always deliver the papers on time whether there was snow, sleet or hail. Over the years he has been a great support for the Voice, suggesting stories for us to follow up on, or making suggestions to make things work smoothly with deliveries. We loved to hear his stories of fishing and hunting and all the other things Bill did.

“Bill has always been a member of our family at the Voice, and we have all loved him and will truly miss him.” said Sue. Editor, Lorna Hamilton, met Bill almost eight years ago when she started working at the Voice. She was amazed that

a man of Bill’s age (80 at the time) was still out driving all over the County delivering papers. She remembers having many conversations with Bill about how fit he was and how she respected the fact that he was so active! They often talked of his travels and he told her stories of when he was a driver in his career driving in all sorts of weather conditions. She remembers days Bill would still go out to deliver the paper even when the weather wasn’t optimal and the roads were not at their greatest, (she wasn’t doing her route because she was to chicken to go until the roads became better). Bill was definitely an early riser, and she remembers so many times he was at the office before her, and she said that she would try to beat him there so her and Jason (her husband) could help him load the papers into his vehicle, but low and behold those days were few and far between because Bill was already there and gone. Days that she did get there before him to help him load, he always stayed to help her load hers before he left.

She says Bill was a man filled with compassion for others and spoke of the time she was really sick with a cold or flu and Bill brought her his famous Garlic soup to cure her all up. She laughs and said that she wasn’t sure if Bill was trying to kill the bug or her because that soup could take the hair off a grown man it was so strong! But Bill was adamant that it would knock that bug right out of her. She remembers all the times Bill was concerned for her or a member of her family if he knew they were under the weather and would never go without asking if they were okay, and always hugged you when he knew you were sad or going through something. She said Bill was sometimes a man of few words, but you never had to doubt his compassion for others.

Robert Harold Richardson Oct. 7, 1942 - Oct. 13, 2021 Robert Harold Richardson, 79, of St. Albert passed away on October 13 2021 from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.

Bob grew up in St. Albert and graduated from NAIT as a denturist in 1966. At NAIT he met Dianne, his wife of 55 years. Soon after, he opened Richardson Denture Clinic in Vermilion where they lived for 27 years with daughters, Shawna and Dayna. During his time as a denturist and business owner he mentored and trained many successful denturist students.

Bob was very involved in the denturist community. Serving as president of the Alberta Denturist Association as well as being on the Federal association board.

He also served on the examining board to qualify new denturists. Bob was the first denturist to be awarded the Award of Merit from the Alberta Denturist association. Bob donated his time and expertise on multiple dental missions in Central and South America over the years.

Bob was always busy with different organizations in Vermilion, Kinsmen, Curling Club, United Church, Chamber of Commerce, Rotary to name a few.

Bob was also a wonderful family man.

He loved spending weekends at the lake in the summer with his family and friends. He looked forward to fishing and hunting trips every year with his buddies.

After selling the denture clinic in Vermilion he and Dianne moved to St. Albert where Bob started instructing at NAIT. After several years Bob retired in 2003.

Once retired he had time to pursue his hobbies of furniture building and wood carving. At this point he also enjoyed being grandpa to his 4 grandchildren.

Bob was predeceased by parents Dan and Agnes Richardson and sister-in-law Beryle. He is survived by wife, Dianne, daughters Shawna (Tim) Hawkins and Dayna (Kerry) Kineshanko. Grandchildren Graham Kineshanko, Everett Kineshanko, Elias Hawkins and Donovan Hawkins. Brother Fred, sister Kathleen, nieces and nephews.

To honour Bob’s wishes there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers consider making donations to Pacific Alzheimer’s Research Foundation (parf.ca).

Bill was about his appearance! When Bill discovered that Lorna was also a hairstylist she knew she would be getting a phone call every four weeks like clockwork, and if she couldn’t make it for whatever reason he said no worries and would be off to get it done. Jason always went with Lorna to cut Bill’s hair and she believes Bill really enjoyed the male company as after each cut Bill wasn’t letting them go until you had a cup of tea or coffee along with some of the baked goods he had made, and a chat.

There are so many conversations had and many that will now be missed, she says that Bills passing has left an emptiness in the Vermilion Voice team that will last a very long time.

Graphic Designer, Amr Rezk, met Bill almost five years ago when he started working at the Voice.

“He was a pleasant man, always smiling and cheery. He would stop at the office around noon after delivering the paper and have a friendly chat. It was the highlight of my Tuesday when he came in for our weekly chat.” said Amr. “I remember one time when it was a very cold day and he asked for the temperature and I answered him and he followed with “is that Celsius or Fahrenheit?” then proceeded to tell me how Celsius still confuses him since he grew up during the times when Canada was still using the imperial system and he still uses Fahrenheit and the only thing he remembers is that -40 Celsius is the same in Fahrenheit. It was always endearing to hear his stories when he stopped by.” added Amr. “Another memory I have is when Bill came to the office a couple years ago on a Tuesday and mentioned that it was his birthday. We wished him a happy birthday and we invited him to go with us to lunch and we went and had lunch that day, and he told us many of his hunting and fishing stories. It was always a pleasure to talk

to him and he will be dearly missed.” said Amr. Angela Mouly said it was easy to see Bill’s appreciation for others in the community and as a past reporter, she was grateful that he was always willing to help come up with story ideas. Whether it was time spent in the office, at his home or even on the phone checking in, her favourite thing about Bill was his ability to always brighten her day. Touring the area, learning all of his recommended points of interest was definitely a highlight because it came with the same genuine zest for life that he shared with everyone every day.

“As for me I simply wish I could give my friend one more gentle hug,” said Angela.

“You will be dearly missed by a multitude of friends, and we send sincere condolences to your family. Your life and the way in which you carried yourself is something we can all admire.”

Orest A. Kiziak passed away on October 14, 2021 in Edmonton at the age of 78 years.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 56 years Joan; children Cindy (Brad) Hines, Rodney Kiziak, and Stacey (Joanne) Kiziak; grandchildren Derek Hines, Owen Hines, Tyrel Hines (Mikayla Franke), Dustin Hines (Raven Bullee), Emily (Harley Ralfs), and Kaitlyn; great grandchildren Braelyn and Caysen Hines; brother Paul Kiziak (Cindy Goulding); mother in Law Annie Trach; nephew and niece Lee (Stacey) Trach and Kelsey Trach (Karl Jory); great niece Leah Trach; as well as numerous relatives, trucking friends and acquaintances.

He was predeceased by his parents Peter & Annie Kiziak; father in law John Trach; brother in law Peter Trach; and sister in law Patsy Trach.

A private family funeral service will be taking place.

The Blake Reid Band Opens Allied Arts Season

The Vermilion Allied Ar ts Coun cil kicked off their 2021-2022 season with a performance by The Blake Reid Band at the Alumni Theatre Saturday evening. Hailing from Dogpound in Southern Alberta, Blake Reid, a fifth generation farmer, uses his music to tell the stories of rural life. Writing music while farming and growing up in rural Alberta, Reid and his songwriting partner, Aaron Young have mastered the art of storytelling through melody and thoughtful, genuine lyrics. “ It is cof fee time through music, stories that are coloured with acoustic instruments played by fantastic musicians,” says Reid.

The band played several of Reid’s original pieces enter taining the socially distanced crowd with some

down to earth, clean, clear countr y rhythms. Drawing music from the band’s documentary ‘No Roads In’, their ex tensive reper toire of songs, as well as new music from their next album, the band painted a realistic, sometimes humorous por trait of real life experiences.

From the title track of the movie, to the entertaining ‘Friggin’ Dog’, and a tribute to the strong relationship with his grandfather, as well as a wonderful nod to Merle Haggard’s ‘The Way I am’ Reid and his friends had the crowd clapping, laughing, reflecting and tapping their toes all evening.

DARY, Kenneth Brian On October 10, 2021 Kenneth Brian Dary of Mannville, Alberta passed away peacefully at the age of 72. Driving Back To Work Program

With the ever-growing shortage of Class 1 drivers the Alberta government is implementing the second phase of the ‘Driving Back To Work (DBTW) grant program; which they claim will help strengthen the workforce by providing unemployed Albertans an opportunity to start careers as commercial truck drivers.

It is also meant to reduce the expected 12 per cent shortage of commercial drivers forecasted by 2023, which could put the province’s supply chain at risk.

“We have projected that we’re going to have quite the shortage in qualified truck drivers in the next couple of years,” stated Alberta Transportation Minister Rajan Sawhney.

The two- year program which started in 2020, and is part of Alberta’s Recovery Plan with funding totaling $5 million to provide 500 unemployed Albertans with the opportunity to obtain their Class

Alberta that is now collapsing our healthcare system. This was preventable.

The government, the school boards and the principals are legally culpable for their decisions. Due Diligence is the legal term that is used to assess whether legal obligations have been met. Because there is a viral wildfire burning tens of thousands of our children at schools is proof that the government and school boards have gravely failed their due diligence.

Of course, we also have the Municipal and School Board elections on October 18, so make sure that you only vote for candidates that are willing to fight and win the Covid Crisis, for rolling over and playing dead hasn’t worked out well at all and fully vaccinated people are now dying because they can’t get healthcare services. This is truly the biggest crisis in Alberta’s history so make sure you’re on the right side of history.

It’s a beautiful fall, and it is starting to get a bit chilly. That is always a good reason to turn on the oven and do a little baking.

This week I am developing double chocolate muffin, that is full of healthy ingredients. As you may already know from my other articles, oats contain a special fiber called beta-glucan, which has been proven to have the beneficial effect of removing cholesterol from the digestive track before it can enter the bloodstream.

The oat bran and ground flax seed are great sources of fiber and help to stabilize blood sugar, which may be beneficial for people with diabetes, insulin-resistant metabolic syndrome and obesity. I like using unbleached flour instead of white

These days, working the same job for two decades is not incredibly common.

Typically, people will move from job to job, usually in the same career, every few years.

Back in 1928, there was one man who stayed at his job for 20 years and even more amazingly, never missed a day or took a holiday.

Beginning in 1908, Alfred Monkman started to deliver the mail between Vermilion and Elk Point, which was no small journey. At the time, there was little between the two locations and his first mail vehicle was just a wagon with a couple of oxen. Traveling about 72 kilo-

bleached wheat flour because then the immune system in our gut does not have to deal with the bleaching agents in the flour.

When selecting cocoa powder, it’s good to know that there are two types. One is called dutched, such as Frys and the other is natural, such as Hershey. When the cocoa powder is dutched, it has been treated with an alkalizing substance. This gives the chocolate a darker colour and removes some of the bitterness. Unfortunately, it removes many of the beneficial antioxidants. Natural cocoa, like Hersey has a lighter colour, and is slightly bitter, but it is full of the beneficial antioxidants and nutrients that have caused heart doctors to advise their patients to eat dark chocolate.

Studies have shown dark chocolate to be heart-healthy by reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke. Chocolate consumption helps to raise good cholesterol and reduce bad cholesterol. A compound in

chocolate called anandamide delivers feelgood bliss, reducing depression, while also stimulating areas of the brain responsible for memory, a positive mood and higher thought processes. Scientists at Harvard Medical School recommend drinking 2 cups of cocoa a day to help preserve memory and keep the brain healthy, so go ahead and enjoy your favourite chocolate.

I like using Heresy cocoa for this recipe, as it is natural and un-dutched, therefore you get more of the beneficial dark chocolate antioxidants. If you prefer dairy- free, you could sub out the butter and milk for coconut oil and coconut milk or just water. I will often use a mixture of fats to make up the 1/2 cup, as each different fat has different health benefits.

Healthy Double Chocolate Muffins 1 cup unbleached flour 1/2 cup oat bran 1/2 cup ground flax seed

1/2 cup ground cocoa powder 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon sea salt (optional) 1 cup sugar 1 egg 1/3 cup oil, can be olive, canola or real butter melted 3/4 cup water or milk 1/2 cup sour cream Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Line 12 muffin tins with papers, or grease well.

In a mixing bowl add all the dry ingredients. In a second bowl mix together the wet ingredients including the egg, oil, sour cream, milk and stir to combine. Add the wet ingredient mixture to the dry and stir until just mixed, do not over stir or your muffins will be tough. Stir in the chocolate chips and divide the batter into 12 muffin cups. Bake at 375 degrees for 30 minutes.

Finally, he got a small three-ton truck, with mail bags piled high, about five or six feet above the box, and slung over the sides and fastened to the box. Sometimes he would have two or three passengers joining him on the journey.

The worst time of year to transport the mail was not the winter, but the spring, when the roads were knee-deep in mud, with the horses tired from the winter and the weather still cold in the mornings and

evening. Another bit of danger was going over rivers, where the ice was beginning to thaw. That created the real danger of falling through in the spring. During the later spring, summer and autumn, ferries would run which made the journey much safer.

Overall, for 20 years, Monkman made the mail trip twice a week without fail.

In that time it is estimated he travelled 370,149 kilometres, which is just shy of the distance from Earth to the Moon. Along the way, he carried about 12,000 tons of mail, or twice the weight of a Tyrannosaurus Rex. The route was travelled roughly 4,000 times in those 20 years.

Unfortunately, the path of progress spelled an end to Monkman and his travels as the mail carrier in 1928. That year, the route he had taken was replaced with

a railroad and he would do his last run of the mail route on April 28, 1928.

How much would Canada save by having the mail sent over the railroad between Elk Point and Vermilion? It amounted to $100 per year, no small amount at the time but it could be said something was lost when Monkman made his last trip.

Could This Be The Start Of A Real-Life Terminator?

Robots have been given a special spotlight in recent years, with major advancements taking the old wheeled robots of the 19th century and transforming them into legged walking machines. Companies like Boston Dynamics have been manufacturing robotic dogs for a couple of years.

Although Boston Dynamics opts to disallow the weaponization of their robot dogs, other companies do not share the same sentiment. These robots are very powerful machines and it was only a matter of time until someone decided to strap a gun to one. But recently when a US firm Ghost Robotics unveiled its Sniper rifle-equipped military robot dog it was met with mixed feelings.

The Robot dog is marketed on their website as “ the future of unmanned weapon systems” and although they aren’t exactly clear on what that will entail “unmanned” sounds like the dogs will be running autonomously. This raises the question of how they can distinguish between friendlies and enemies, or even

when it is ok to fire. A lot more information will need to be unveiled before this weapon is used in actual combat. Hopefully, rather than having these robots control themselves these systems will be controlled remotely by a pilot from afar. With a system like this equipped with night vision, thermal vision, and a 30x optical zoom it would take a new level of insanity to give the machine control.

Of course, these machines will have more utility than being weapons. With these robot dogs being much more capable of navigating rough terrain than a wheeled or treaded vehicle it does seem like a logical next step to add legs to what is already available. These robots will also be able to carry other payloads, all with their own purposes including providing remote video and mapping, the machines could be used as mobile cell towers, to defuse bombs, or to detect chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear matter.

The question is when these devices are deployed how much oversight will be required before they are able to fire at a human. Many are asking the government to put in some pre-emptive measures or restrictions on these killer robots. Although Canada is already on board with banning

Hughes went on to say that Peace Officers routinely check on rural mailboxes as part of their patrol, however they are not always able to prevent break-ins.

“If you see something suspicious, contact the RCMP. If the mailbox needs servicing, contact your local Canada Post outlet,” explained Hughes.

Alberta’s Influenza Immunization Campaign Started

With the Influenza season started Alber ta Health Ser vices (AHS) has began their immunization campaign yesterday.

Lead Medic al O f ficer of Health, Communicable Disease Control, Alberta Health Service Dr. Kristin Klein was available virtually on October 15 to discuss influenza immunization across Alberta.

Dr. Klein says there is no concerns at this time that they would not have adequate vaccine for everybody that wants to get vaccinated to do so, and that in 2020 1.6 million doses were administered in Alberta; currently, the province has ordered 2.1 million doses.

“In 2020 we had the largest uptake rate the province has seen in the past decade and I think in my ideal circumstance we actually would run out of vaccine because that would mean that 40 per cent of the population or more have taken the opportunity to protect themselves and get vaccinated,” stated Dr. Klein.

Hinshaw stated that so far there have been three confirmed cases of Influenza.

Unlike the 2020/21 Influenza season, there were no lab-confirmed influenza cases and no flu-related deaths according to AHS. In the 2019/20 season it is stated that there were 8470 confirmed cases of Influenza and 41 deaths “Influenza remains a serious and deadly virus and it is important that we protect as many people as possible,” stated Dr. File Photo

Hinshaw also mentioned that similar prevention strategies including good hygiene, such as washing hands, physical distancing, staying home when sick and wearing masks are effective in preventing the spread of both Influenza and COVID-19.

Dr. Klein mentioned that the three confirmed cases have been linked to travel, and also noted that at this point in time in any other normal year the province would have typically recorded 10 to 20 cases and that as of now this year is currently well below normal averages.

AHS will partner with Public Health clinics to administer doses to children under the age of five and their households, for people who do not have an Alberta Health Care number, and for people living in communities without the means to receive the immunization. Reducing Red Tape Saves Time, Money For Alberta Small Businesses

There is nothing small about small business. Making up 99 per cent of all businesses in our province and accounting for nearly half of all private sector employment, these companies contribute billions of dollars into Alberta’s economy every year.

The small business community is determined, innovative and fearlessly optimistic.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t do more to support these entrepreneurs.

With this week being Small Business Week, I wanted to share a few of the ways that Alberta’s government is helping small businesses.

First and foremost, as the Associate Minister of Red Tape Reduction, my goal

is to cut red tape by one third to get Albertans back to work and to bolster Alberta’s Recovery Plan.

Small businesses told us from the start that the regulatory burden was crushing their competitiveness. That’s why we’re focused on streamlining time consuming processes, eliminating redundant reporting requirements, and modernizing regulatory frameworks to save small businesses both time and money.

So far we have made great progress, cutting red tape by more than 17 per cent.

So what does this mean for you or your business?

To start with, it means more opportunities for small distillers and more choice for consumers. Alberta’s liquor policies were outdated so we modernized them, spurring small businesses to increase sales, engage with customers and expand business opportunities with new products.

We also updated regulations to give Albertans more access to low-risk homeprepared goods like jams, jellies, canned goods and candies and created new revenue opportunities for bed and breakfasts.

Further, we eliminated more than 10,000 permits for Alberta’s truckers while maintaining road safety, meaning that they can continue to do what they do best, create jobs and drive our economic recovery.

These are just a few examples of the

hundreds of initiatives we have completed to date and we know there’s more to do.

We will continue to work with industry leaders, non-profits, Albertans and the experts on our Red Tape Reduction Industry Panels to identify regulatory barriers that are getting in the way of our job creators and slowing the economic recovery and growth of our province.

Eliminating unnecessary red tape that leads to meaningful impacts for Albertans will continue to be my number one priority, which is where you come in.

Our government shares a common vision with job creators operating small businesses: we want Alberta to be a destination that draws talent and leaders in innovation, investment, and business from across Canada and around the globe.

We need your ideas.

Time To Act On Online Harassment Newsmedia Canada

Submitted Canad a’s news publisher s, who employ 3000 journalists from coast to coast to coast, believe that free speech, journalistic freedom, and a strong, healthy, c o mmerc ially viable, an d fiercely independent media ecosystem are all vital to our democracy.

Canadians rely on their newspapers and news media to be their trusted sources of information, helping them m ake infor me d c ho i c es an d ho l d ing people and institutions, including governments and corporations, accountable.

We hope that Parliamentarians will come together and take meaning ful action to combat hate speech and other kinds of harmful content online, while ensuring that freedom of expression and free debate are recognized, preserved, and protected.

We are among the country’s leading defenders of freedom of speech. At the same time, as employers, we strive to provide a safe, healthy, and inclusive work environment for our journalists.

As businesses who supply news and analysis, we also strive to protect our customers: the public who read our news and engage with us and their fellow readers. We listen to our customers. We take our responsibilities to them and the broader public seriously.

We try to build a better common future for all. And we are accountable for both our actions and inaction.

As a business, the news publishing industr y remains und er threat fr o m u n r e g u l ate d a n d u n c h e c ke d social media and online communication service providers. At the same, our journalists and readers face online harm constantly. Ask any journalist, and they’ll tell you that criticism comes with the job. And rightly so. But hate, harassment, and online and physical harm shouldn’t. It comes from the right, the left, and everywhere in between, and its victims are all too often women and racialized journalists.

We are united in suppor ting our journalists and newsrooms against those who seek to silence them and threaten their safety. Together, we will continue to advocate for industry-wide responses to end this behaviour.

Across the globe, journalists face physical, judicial, and online harm.

In addition to harassment from individuals, journalists face sophisticated defamation campaigns to discredit them. These threats, and their potential impact on journalistic freedom of expression, have detrimental implications for society at large.

The findings of a survey conducted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the International Center for Journalists about online violence against women journalists are alarming:73 per

cent of women respondents said they had experienced online violence; 20 per cent said they had been attacked or abused offline in incidents seeded online; and 41 per cent said they had been the targets of online attacks that appeared to be linked to orchestrated disinformation campaigns.

The impact of this violence on mental health is sobering:38 per cent missed work; 11 per cent quit their jobs; and two per cent abandoned journalism altogether. It also impacts journalistic practices and audience engagement:30 per cent self-censor on social media; 20 per cent only ‘broadcast’ and avoid all interaction; and 10 per cent avoid pursuing particular stories.

Like news publishers, online platforms curate content. They reap all the benefits of being a publisher, albeit on much more commercially favourable terms. At present, however, they do not have the same responsibilities and are not held accountable in the many ways that news publishers are in Canada.

Indeed, they have allowed fake news and disinformation to proliferate around the globe, and they have profited from

it handsomely.

Big Tech has a societal obligation to moderate these activities, just as any news publisher does. In the United States, section 230 of the U.S. Communications Decency Act exempts them from liability over hosting user-generated content and from liability when they choose to remove that content.

However, global companies operating in Canada are subject to Canadian law and should conduct themselves accordingly.

As adver tisers know, these firms have enormous and extremely sophisticated technical prowess. Why then have they failed in their duty as content moderators and allowed harmful content targeted at journalists to be amplified on their platforms?

As a matter of principle, our journalists should be afforded the same protections in the online world as they are in the offline world. Accordingly, we recommend that the Government of Canada explicitly recognize online threats to journalists directly in legislation. At the same time, online platforms should act responsibly. First, they

should act upon reports of harassment from news publishers and journalists within 24 hours. Second, they should invest in technology to detect online hate against journalists. Third, they should detail online harm against journalists in their transparency reports.

Fourth, they should be held accountable through Canada’s libel, defamation, and hate laws, just as Canada’s news publishers are. Fifth, they should face economic penalties when they fail to comply with Canadian laws. Finally, they should make it hard for internet trolls to ‘profit’ from the monetization of content that harms journalists.

As a society, we need to do everything we can to protect democratic expression, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t protect journalists. All publishers, including internet intermediaries, should be held accountable for harmful content. Canada’s publishers stand with our journalists, who won’t be silenced, and readers, who want to be informed.

Lakeland Welcomes New Chair To Board Of Governors

T h e L a k e land College Board of Governors is pleased to welcome Adam Waterman to the position of chair. “ L a ke l a n d s t a n d s t o b e n e f i t s o much from Adam’s combined experience and expertise,” says Dr. Alice Wainwright- Stewar t, president and CEO of L akeland College. “ I am honoured to welcome him to this new position and look forward to work with him in his new position as we navigate the college through these challenging times.”

Waterman first joined the Board of Governors last year as a public member. He has worked in the oil and gas industry for 15 years, and currently works in operations management for a mid-sized producer. Waterman is the

current president of the Lloydminster Oilfield Technical Society and holds other board positions. He has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and a master of business administration. He is currently enrolled in the master of science in finance program at Georg etown Univer sit y and the CFA Institute’s char tered financial analyst program. “ Being from Lloydminster, I fully appreciate the significant role Lakeland plays; both in terms of economic benefits and as a part of our commun i t y,” Wat e r m a n ex p l a i n s . “ I l o o k for ward to building on the work of my predecessor and seeing L ake land grow into the leading agricultural school in Western Canada.”

In the upper gallery of the The Vermilion Heritage Museum, rests a bulletin board full of local business matchbooks.

For decades, matchbooks were used as a form of advertising. Patented in 1892,

businesses began using matchbooks as promotional items about two years later.

I will begin my new position as Principal of Ochre Park School in Redwater on November 1. After 24 years in Buffalo Trail Public Schools, I felt it was time for a change. While I am excited to begin a new adventure, I am truly going to miss the students, parents and staff at Vermilion Elementary School. I have looked for ward to coming to school each and every day and that has been wonderful. Thank you all. My last day at VES will be October 22. I am happy to congratulate Mrs. Sheila Doherty as the new Acting Principal at Vermilion Elementary School. She will assume her new role on November 1 and will remain in that position for the remainder of the school year. An advertisement will be posted shortly for an Acting Assistant Principal for the rest of the 2021/2022 school year. Stay tuned for further updates regarding this position and any other staffing implications for VES.

Students were busy last week making community connections. Each class took two periods to make a flat art project. Every student made their own and then these will be taken to the hospital, extended care, and the lodge, to be placed on their eating trays or table spots. Thank you to Mrs. Gerri Cameron for delivering these. We love making community connections.

If you see your bus driver, make a point this School Bus Safety Week to say thank you for the wonderful job they do. Trying to keep their eyes on the road, while making sure students are wearing masks, sitting in their seats and that the bus and students are sanitized is no easy task. We are lucky that we have such dedicated bus drivers as there are driver shortages across the province where some families don’t have a school bus to get their children to school.

Just like it is the bus driver’s responsibility to safely transport the children to and from school, it is the parent or guardian’s responsibility to make sure their children get safely to and from the bus stop, wear their mask and don’t go to school if they are sick.

Help bus drivers keep our students safe, DO NOT PASS a school bus from either direction when the RED LIGHTS ARE FLASHING. Amber lights are a warning to motorists following or approaching a bus that they are slowing down to make a passenger stop. Passing a school bus puts children at risk. Together we can continue to make the school bus the safest means of student transportation.

If you see someone pass a school bus with its red lights flashing, please call your local RCMP to report them, it is a $567 fine and 6 demerit points. Some of our contracted school buses are equipped with video cameras on the outside of their buses to catch violators. The Provincial School Bus Safety Slogan for the Red Flashing Light Awareness Campaign is “REDS FLASHING…NO PASSING!” One fly-by is one too many!

Sheldon was born in Vermilion Alberta and discovered at an early age that music can pretty much save your life. Growing up in a small town, he found refuge in music as a musician and performed in bands throughout the 80’s as a drummer.

His love of music morphed into a fascination with the recording process and discovered his passion lay in the studio, behind the mixing board.

In 1991, Sheldon went to Trebas Institute, a prestigious recording school in Vancouver where he gained theoretical and practical experience. After his studies at Trebas, he was hired to work at “The Factory”, starting as an assistant engineer working under John MacLean.

From 1993 -2011 Sheldon was the Head Engineer at “The Factory”, working with a bevy of recording acts like Billy Talent, Robben Ford, Geddy Lee, Simple Plan, Bad Company, Roberta Flack, Michelle Wright, Sheena Easton, Melissa Manchester, Susan Aglukark, Philip

Allied Arts Season Tickets

The Allied Arts is inviting you to join them for their 2021-2022 season. The season is in danger of not happening this year due to low sales. In order for the Allied Arts Season to run for the season, they must sell a minimum of 130 adult season tickets. While this will not pay all expenses, the Vermilion Allied Arts Council is willing to absorb the loss for this year, in order to bring performing arts shows back to Vermilion and area.

Please take your cheque for $130 for the 5 shows per adult to Fantasy Flowers by October 30.

Season Tickets will be handed out at the first show of the series on November 6 at 7 p.m. Lakeland College Alumni Theatre.

There has been a change to the lineup for two performances, and the Christmas performance is included in this year’s package.

The following performances are scheduled to happen, current social distancing requirements will be implemented at every show, and season ticket prices will remain at the 2019/20 rate: Adults/Seniors - $130/ 5 shows; Students $40/ 5 shows For this year only, the Christmas performance will be included within the series pricing. Please note: a meal will not be offered with this show.

When “The Factory” closed its doors, Sheldon started the next leg of his journey with his own production company, “Zed Productions”. “Zed Productions” quickly became a ‘go to’ full-service production company, offering in-house studio services at Zed and teaming up with other studios like the iconic “Warehouse Studio” in Vancouver. As his business grew, Sheldon also became the ‘go to guy’ specializing in Live and Remote Recording.

He’s so intuitive, he knows exactly what each instrument, each vocal, each song needs. From working on The Country Music Hall of Fame, “Then and Now” recordings with Ian and Sylvia Tyson, Michelle Wright, Murray McLachlan, The Good Brothers and Gary Fjellgaard, to working on Marilyn Manson’s album and countless other recording projects, Sheldon’s love of music, his creativity, sensibilities, experience and knowledge, give him the green light to engineer diverse musical styles in all genres; jazz, classical, country, rock, folk and other sub-genres.

He’s received numerous nominations for Engineer of the Year for the Junos, Western Canadian Music Awards and BCCMA - BC Country Music Association, and has worked on albums that garnered a Juno from award-winning artists such as Limblifter, Jim Byrnes, Doc Walker, Barney Bentall, Tanya Tagag, Zubot and Dawson, Phil Dwyer, Devin Townsend, Metalwood, Old Man Luedeke, Fond of Tigers, Brad Turner Quartet and Pugs and Crows.

Sheldon has just been awarded his 2nd Western Canadian Music award for Engineer of the Year, October 15, 2021.
