The sun was shining as the ‘Show and Shine’ Nepal Earthquake Relief fundraiser revved up plenty of excitement in Vermilion. Local supporters and motor enthusiasts turned out to view the show and enjoy a hamburger at the AFSC parking lot on May 21.

A wide variety of vintage cars, dealership trucks, sports cars and other show vehicles were shined up and displayed hood up with the opportunity for spectators to talk with the owners.

The Show and Shine fundraiser raised $1,600 in total. This contribution will be doubled to $3,200 by the federal government as a contribution to the Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund.

The two young organizers, Dallas Maughan and Kyle Bardoel, both Grade 10 leadership students at St. Jerome’s School, decided to organize the fundraiser event to support relief efforts in Nepal after the recent devastating earthquakes.

Maughan said, “I really didn’t expect this many cars to show up today, it started off as a school event and then it grew so we decided we needed a parking lot. After we put it on Facebook there was a huge response. We are very surprised and happy with this huge response today.”

Jim Mullan travelled from Wainwright Motor Club with his 1968 Chrysler 300.

“We found out about today’s event on Facebook and we were more than willing

to bring some vehicles here to show. We all drive cars and it’s a chance to get out in the sun for a drive today and to support a good cause.”

The Lloydminster Motor Club (LMC) also brought their cars, made a donation and spent the afternoon at the show. The Club handed out LMC member cards by donation, giving special pricing discounts at 15 local businesses throughout Lloydminster, Provost, and Wainwright.

St. Jerome’s teacher Allan MacMillan said, “It has been a fantastic success and I cannot thank the generosity of our local car communities and the people of Vermilion enough. We went into this thing pretty blind and hoping for the best. I really want to say thank you to all the folks who came and bought a burger or dog, or made a donation to support Nepal earthquake relief. I would also like to thank our leadership kids who spent an awful lot of time organizing and executing to make this happen.”

Eastalta Co-op, McDonald Foods, and Vermilion Packers donated all the food and barbecue supplies. The Town of Vermilion and AFSC gave permission for the use of space. ATCO loaned their tent, and the Knights of Columbus loaned the barbecue (with the assistance of Jim Sanson and Paul Corbiere). Volunteers from the fire school worked the barbecue.

Volunteer Citizen Of The Year Runner-Up

Buddy Bensmiller was the runner up of this year’s Volunteer Citizen of The Year. He was nominated as a finalist for his volunteer work coaching hockey and contribution to the Chuckwagon racing in the Dewberry community. “ It ’s a great honour, I was ver y s u r p r i s e d ,” s a i d B e n s m i l l e r w h o coached minor hockey for close to twenty years.

“I have often called up families that I knew had kids that weren’t playing to get them out so that we could get enough to make a team. I just love to see kids playing hockey. I think every kid should have the chance and in a small town like Dewberr y you have trouble getting enough kids to get a team.”

Bensmiller said he started off coaching when his knees couldn’t handle playing hockey, “ I quit and star ted coaching with my nephews and then with my kids.”

“While working in the oil patch and farming a 500/600 head of cattle, Bensmiller still found the time to support hockey kids and attend hockey games as far away as Fort McMurray.

Buddy is a two-time World Champion Chuckwagon Driver, a three-time Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby Champion driver and a three -time Calgary Stampede Aggregate winner.

Buddy is a second-generation wagon man, and his three sons are all chuckwagon drivers. Buddy and his wife Darlene have four children: Lisa, David, Kurt, and Chance, and eight grandchildren.

“Since the oil patch got slow I went

to work in the movies with John Scott in Calgary.”

Bensmiller worked as one of three trackers on horses in Leonardo DiCaprio’s western ‘The Revenant ’ shot in southern Alberta. “ I t w a s c o o l ,” s a i d B e n s m i l l e r.

“DiCaprio was great to work with on the first day, but the second day in takes it was a dif ferent stor y. He wanted everybody to do things for him, he had been in a few other Western films but he had never really rode horses.”

The Volunteer Citizen of the Year Award program seeks to acknowledge dedicated individuals whose contributions make their communities a better place to live. It was first introduced to Alberta in 2005. The program is part of Direct Energy’s Nor th American community involvement initiative.

Summer is on its way, which means swimsuits, sandals, shorts and tank tops season. We will all be pulling out our summer attire, and for many of us the purpose is to stay cool and enjoy soaking up some sun. But for the teenage population, girls in particular, it also means looking your best in the variety of dresses, tanks and shorts and especially the bathing suit or bikini.

Many teenage girls will worry about the few extra pounds they may have.

Those who are considered obese will be attempting everything possible to lose the pounds.

Being a chunky woman myself, who one time before pregnancy, was a very slender well-muscled young women.

I know how it feels to dislike the way you look, but sometimes life serves you lemons and your metabolism changes, and no matter how healthy you eat you will never be the size 0 you used to be.

With that said, you have to learn how to accept yourself and love yourself regardless of your size.

Many people in society automatically assume that if you are a bigger person your eating habits consist of junk food and over-eating. They think you are a couch

potato, who just sits around not engaging in physical activity.

The stereotypes toward heavier people are that they are fat because they are lazy and love food too much. I can tell you from personal experience that isn’t always the case. I am very careful about what I consume; being a person who is both lactose and gluten intolerant my food choices are quite limited and basically consist mainly of fruits, vegetables and meat and I still have the daily struggle of trying to losing weight. This editorial isn’t about me, it’s asking the question if our society has pushed skinny too far? Has society pushed our children over the edge through commercials, TV shows, the picture of models and societal perception?

Studies have shown that women and teenage girls on average have 13 negative thoughts each day about their body and 97% of women and girls admit to having at least one thought per day where they absolutely hate their body. The statistics are staggering on how much we as women continuously put ourselves down due to our body image and size.

Teen girls are, as we know, most likely to develop eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia. Teen girls are more apt to seek out and try the numerous fad diets just to lose what they consider extra pounds.

Young women tend to perceive their

bodies more harshly, especially when they compare themselves to models who are medically considered emaciated, or to singers who strut their stuff in music videos. Teen girls and young women look at celebrities who are often way to skinny and set impossible weight goals for themselves.

One of the newest things young women look at is the “Thigh gap.” Seriously, the space between the thighs has become one of the popular wants among young women. Personally, I think it’s ridiculous, but somehow it has become an important space on the body which should be there.

Where did the perception of the “Thigh gap” come from? Apparently it all started from a Victoria Secret fashion show.

In writing this editorial I asked my teenage daughter about the “Thigh gap” and the importance behind it, and quite frankly I was surprised by her response. “The “Thigh gap” determines if your legs are skinny enough or not for shorts. Your legs look better in shorts if they are skinnier, not like my legs.” My response back to her was quite blunt and to the point, “Are you kidding me?? That is the craziest thing I have ever heard! Your legs are just fine!”

Another thought which runs through a teen/young woman’s mind is their perception of what is on the minds of boys/young men. The thinking is that boys/men don’t want the average or chunkier female as a mate; they want the arm candy they can

Genocide Recognition vote was clearly not unanimous I fo u n d i t ve r y c o n c e r n i n g t h at some members of the media reported that House of Commons Motion No. 587 (Genocide Recognition) was carried unanimously. This inaccurate reporting gave the false impression that all Members of Parliament supported this motion on genocide, which included a reaffirmation of the Armenian Genocide motion passed by Parliament in 2004.

Many MPs did not support this part of the motion for differing reasons. The vote in the House of Commons was not unanimous as was reported by some media.

In fact, unanimous support was denied and the motion was passed by the subsequent voice vote.

The motion sought to declare April as Genocide Remembrance, Condemnation and Prevention Month, which probably was unanimously supported. But it also re-affirms support of the House of Commons for the 2004 Armenian Genocide recognition resolution and acknowledges the associated Armenian Geno-

cide Memorial Day, which certainly was not unanimously supported.

Accurately reporting the outcome of this vote is important to the Turkish-Canadian and Armenian-Canadian communities alike. It is an extremely divisive issue for many. Reporting its adoption as unanimous is not only inaccurate, but also hurtful to Turks from around the world, who have been led to believe that all Canadian parliamentarians believe that what occurred 100 years ago was genocide and that this issue should be repeatedly reaffirmed in the Canadian parliament.

This inaccurate reporting is hurtful to Canadians of Turkish descent and Turks around the world, as well as to Canadian MPs who did not support this motion.

There has been some shift in the skinny trend on social media from the male perceptive. I have seen videos made by young men stating that women of all shapes and sizes are beautiful, they have actually tried to change society’s view of the chunkier woman and I find that a positive change. I think it helps show the girls/women of the world that they can be accepted and loved for who they are.

They don’t need to be super skinny; if you are beautiful on the inside it will shine on the outside.

The thing is, don’t let society dictate what you should look like. We are all different shapes and sizes. Eat healthy, stay active and love yourself for who you are. Being skinny is not worth starving yourself or making yourself sick. Once you walk down the road to fad diets and eating disorders, it’s a very hard long road back once these disorders are entrenched in you.

Young ladies, stay young. Enjoy the things that matter, such as spending time with your friends and growing your relationships. Make memories this summer that will last a lifetime. Remember the saying, if you don’t like what you see, you don’t have to look at me. Hold your head high and love yourself for who you are!!

I h o p e e ve r y o n e had a safe and enjoyable May long weeke n d . I t wa s o n e o f t h e b e st t hat I c an remember. We even needed that little midnight rain some of us got, as things are very dry out there.

I had a final push on yard and garden chores all weekend, however, at least I was outdoors for it all. I even got a slight “farmers tan” on Monday, and it just keeps getting better all week.

Well, from a sun worshipper or nice weather person perspective anyway, Alber ta Forestr y may be a lit tle concerned with all the hot dry weather though, I wanted to buy the fire pit last evening, but checked Alber ta’s fire bans.

Although we have a fire ban in our recreational county, fire pits are still allowed at this time, and since we had a little gusting wind I didn’t want to push it as the fire risk is high to extreme; better safe than sorry.

There are fire bans for much of the populated nor th in ef fect, although some have special allowances such as mine, many campers and spring bear hunters had a cold camp this past long weekend.

The Nor th Buck Lake recreation area, north of Edmonton, was temporarily evacuated, because of a wildfire burning nearby. But, overall the number of human-caused and unattended campfires was down significantly from a typical long weekend.

“Of the fires that were repor ted, 50 were unattended campfires,” said Duncan MacDonnell with Sustainable Resource Development. “Most of those were in the south part of the province

and that sounds like a lot. But it’s actually down from what we normally get on a long weekend. We could get 100 to 200 unattended campfires and this year there were only 50. That’s still 50 too many, but it’s a little better than it was before.”

Fines could run you up to $5000 for unattended fires and/or your worst nightmare …cost to fight a wildfire, it’s getting so beautiful and green out there, not much into that black and charcoal look, so please be careful out there.

A l s o, g o t m y g a r d e n f i s h p o n d cleaned up and filled with water, so on Friday I went to the pet store and asked for four gold fish…now I didn’t realize they literally were made of gold now.

The bill came to $50.00, but I got two large and two small with some food until the mosquito lar vae and other waterborne insects moved in, then they get huge and fat quickly.

One year they grew over 15 cm /6” long. They are fun to watch. I have an old working order hand water pump that they had on old farmsteads, and a rusty old bucket, which looks authentic.

This little pond is made of cement and rock and is twice the size…both length and depth of a large bathtub and the gold fish have a perfect mix of shade and sun there.

c an g et water. It ’s a tranquil lit tle aquatic world, all expect for one big issue.

Miss Pickles, who is already over that 6 0 lb mark, with a mix ture of colder weather breeds, rolls around in the garden, runs through the fresh plowed fields, streaks over to the pond and as graceful as a hippo dives on in.

She thinks it ’s the handiest mud puddle to cool off in ever. She likes it so much she doesn’t even run over to the our big slough pond to terrorize all the wildlife there anymore.

Marj, who took the best outstanding crocus picture, sent me a picture of their new slough grandbaby’s; a whole flock of the first bright yellow goslings.

TAKE NOTICE that the Council of the County of Two Hills No. 21, in the Province of Alberta, has given first reading to Bylaw No. 4-2015 which will, upon final passage and approval, authorize the lending of money by the County of Two Hills No. 21 to the Myrnam Municipal Seed Cleaning Plant for Upgrades and a Gravity Separator.

The total cost of the aforesaid project amounts to $150,000.00. The Myrnam Municipal Seed Cleaning Plant shall repay the indebtedness according to the repayment schedule, in effect, namely semi annual equal payments of combined principal and interest installments not to exceed twenty (20) years calculated at a minimum rate of not less than that fixed by Alberta Capital Finance Authority; and not to exceed ten (10%) percent.

NOW THEREFORE NOTICE is hereby given by the Council of the County of Two Hills that, unless a petition of the ratepayers for a vote on Bylaw No. 4-2015 is demanded, as provided for by the terms of Section 231 of the Municipal Government Act, the said Council may pass the said lending bylaw.

All persons interested are hereby notified and they are required to govern themselves accordingly.

In hard times and with cash being scarce, you’d of ten find patch jobs and jury rigged fixins’ that only a person with a really creative mind and that necessity to try to survive would think of!!

In real early times, balers used wire to tie the bales. You know now how twine gets discarded and is a nuisance. Well you can imagine that, “Haywire” soon found its way to fixin things that needed a fastener to hold things together.

Next, was the twine rope that came with every bag of twine, every six balls!!

Those twine ropes were used in so many ways. Halter shanks and gate hinges; my brother and I made a swing with two ropes and a big willow post suspended across two trees. Like I say, you’d find those ropes in dozens of applications. Next were the belts that ran things that had pulleys until they wore out and soon they made soles for shoes, door hinges, and on and on.

Back in the days when inner tubes were really rubber, straps of it passed as screen door springs and anywhere else you needed a substitute for a spring.

Really something in the war time when metal was in short supply.

I made some pretty deadly sling shots with the same material and a forked stick!!

The fact that cash and repairs were scarce made the art of makin’do so wonderful.

A neighbour of ours used some bacon rind for a bearing shell on his old pump engine and it made do pumping water like a new one. A piece of bacon rind!!

with similar makeshift doings as a matter of cause. It was a study to watch a gasket being made from building paper or whatever else that was handy.

After the depression started in the thirties, many folks simply couldn’t afford their telephones, so it seemed there was a lot of telephone lines abandoned and telephone wire became common as it was heavier and stronger then haywire. It was also very cheap and it soon appeared in a lot of applications around many farms.

Like I said, you used whatever was handy and cheap.

We had poplar trees growing in fairly good quantity and besides being used for firewood, it was also made use of to build corals, strawbarns, floors in barns and almost any other place wood was used; even wagon and sleigh tongues, reaches (the thing that hooked the back to the front of a sleigh or wagon). A good well cured piece could do for a double tree, neck yoke, or to build a bundle rack or whatever!!

In my boyhood it seemed anything that needed fixed was worked on at home, right in our own little shop, whether it was overhauling an engine or transmission whatever needed attention!

I would watch as dad took the transmission out of his car and took it completely to pieces and examined all the parts to find out the problem, do the repair and assembled it all on a rainy afternoon. It was fascinating to watch. Same with any engine, as the cylinder head was taken off and the pistons and valves cleaned and maybe new piston rings would be fitted, all the bearings checked and valves ground. Very little work was done in a garage by a regular mechanic, there just wasn’t cash for that, most of the folks did their own, or at least we did.

My brother and I overhauled tractors and vehicle engines when we were teenagers. My brother was a gifted mechanic and I was the gopher. But Elmer engineered a surplus aircraft generator and made a portable electric welder that we ran off our little 9N Ford tractor. We built a lot of worthwhile pieces of handy gadgets

for ourselves and neighbours over the years, as well as did so many repairs for all who needed help.

So many old car parts were remanufactured into wire-winders, power units to saw wood and grind grain. To see the creative ways that our pioneers made due to survive hard times was wonderful to see.

In our affluent times it doesn’t seem necessary to do that kind of thing and now machines are so high tech that kind of thing maybe isn’t even in any way possible. That makes do, get by spirit, isn’t so readily needed when there is such an abundance of nearly everything, and it’s easier and we do often take that trail that leads to head to town and get whatever we need at whatever the cost. I sincerely hope those hard times that spawn the, “Makin do Gettin’ by” idea don’t find a place anymore, really!

Vermilion Lions Club member Jimmy Cryderman and his dog Dancer prepare for the upcoming Purina Walk for Dog Guides in Vermilion Park on Sunday, May 31. While the Vermilion chapter of the Lions Club walk is now in its sixth year, nationally it is in its 30th year. The walk raises money to train dogs to help people with very specific needs, such as hearing and vision loss, among others. Each dog guide costs $25,000 to train. Cryderman cited very personal reasons for participating in the walk every year. “People need guide dogs

and you never know, one day I might need one of those dogs.” This year will mark the second year Cr yderman’s dog Dancer will be walking with him.

He also said he is walking in memory of his dogs Bingo and Oakie. “ We are also looking for volunteers. We need all the money we can raise.”

From time to time during their tenure, opportunities arise for our Parliamentary representatives to demonstrate to a cynical public that integrity remains alive and well in the House. Such an opportunity awaits them now as they consider whether or not to cast a vote in favour of passing Bill C-59, introduced in the House on May 7, 2015. The purpose of the ‘Economic Action Plan 2015 Act’, is ostensibly to implement the federal government’s new budget presented last month.

We’ve grown to accept that our majority Conservative government prefers the form of omnibus bills when presenting new legislation to Parliament. Nestled deep inside the text of Bill C-59’s cumbersome 167 pages lies something not even remotely related to any budgetary or financial matters. That’s the key to an omnibus format. All kinds of unrelated issues can be addressed and amendments to existing laws can be included under one banner, all of which will pass quietly into law when a bill receives Royal Assent. What’s proposed in the most recent omnibus submission though, is something that Suzanne Legault, Canada’s Information Commissioner, refers to as “unprecedented”. What could it be?

Lawmaking, Retroactively

A simpleton’s synopsis of events: Allegedly, certain documents concerning the long-gun registry were to have been preserved and provided as part of a legitimate request made on March 27, 2012 under the provisions of the Access to Information Act. Instead of being preserved, said documents were destroyed. Under existing law, such destruction constitutes an illegal act. Bill C-59 seeks to amend section 230 of the Ending the Long-gun Registry Act, passed into law on April 5, 2012, and for such amendment to take effect “retroactively”, NOT to the date the law became law but to October 25, 2011, the date the Conservatives introduced the bill to Parliament. The effect is to eliminate any wrongdoing by those who destroyed the documents and deny anyone the right to challenge the action. It’s a move with all kinds of questionable and alarming future possibilities. New laws usually affect the future. They do not normally reach back into and alter the past.

To get the specific and full backstory, you will want to seek out Ms. Legault’s Special Report to Parliament. After investigation, she has referred the matter to the Attorney General, recommending that charges be laid. You can access the Report easily enough online. It’s definitely a worthwhile read...but only if you care deeply about your country and the future of democracy as we know it.

“It’s as if in 2005, we would have erased all of the audits that (then Auditor General) Sheila Fraser did in the sponsorship scandal” or “if there are allegations of electoral fraud, we would decide to pass a law to retroactively eliminate and erase all investigations,” said Ms. Legault in a recent CTV interview.

Access to Information experts refer to it as essentially “erasing National memory”.

Plainly, what this legislation seeks to accomplish is to eliminate an offence by changing the law that makes an act an offence. Sounds slightly outrageous.

Prime Minister Harper, when challenged in the House this week about the dangerous implications of applying law retroactively, responded to MP Wayne Easter that government was simply closing a “loophole”. There are a growing number of people of conscience who perceive manipulating legislation in this manner quite differently.

We know that ideal is a construct, but we still aspire to achieve it. Without hope to cling to, surely we would all be

compelled to leap over the cliff of despair into the abyss of permanent darkness.

Parliamentarians, were we to imagine the ideal family scenario, are the parental stand-ins. We the citizens then, are the expectant children, seeking guidance and example from those in charge. From those whose cumulative experience, apparent superior knowledge, and nonpartisan judgement qualifying them as leaders, keepers of the flame symbolizing Justice and Honour, we expect FairPlay.

Is it unreasonable for us to expect that those responsible for creating our laws would also respect and uphold them?

What would you do with your vote if you had been gifted the honour of representing your family of trusting citizens in the most powerful process in the country? Would you close your eyes and press the most convenient button, accept your whipping and tow the party line, or would you stand up for integrity and honour a process of lawmaking that represents our democracy and shields it from glaring compromise?

The 109 Annual General Meeting were let out of school to stamp out

History Lesson

of the Vermilion and District Chamber of Commerce took place in the historic Vermilion CN Station on May 21, and as you would expect after 109 years, there was a lot of history present.

Board member for the Vermilion Heritage Museum, Tom Kibblewhite, was the invited speaker for the occasion. Before delving into the history of the Chamber of Commerce in Vermilion, he visually prepared everyone for his speech by donning a hat and tucking a pocket watch into his vest which was reminiscent of the typical businessman attire of the early 1900’s.

Quoting excerpts from the Vermilion Signal, the first newspaper in Vermilion, that are collected in a book called The Bull’s – Eye by Allen Ronaghan, Kibblewhite described in great detail how the local Board of Trade came about from a suggestion that was first made in February 1906, approximately one year after the Town of Vermilion was established in September 1905.

He also spoke about the fire in 1918 that blazed through the wooden structures of the Town that burned down 28 stores and business blocks. Kibble-

sparks that were being spread by burning cedar shingles. The Town’s buildings were rebuilt using cement and bricks. “Future planners should heed the past,” said Kibblewhite.

President of the Chamber of Commerce, Robert Ernst, echoed this sentiment.

“We are providing the history for our kids and our children’s children. The significance may not hit us today, but it will down the road.”

Ernst said 2014 was a challenge for the Chamber for many reasons.

“It was a trying time with the price of oil and everything else,” he said.

He also cited the difficulties the Chamber had with maintaining communication with its members due to a lack of consistency in the Office Manager role.

However, with Michelle Feist now in that position he said, “Communication with members has been normalized.”

Treasurer Meagan Balaneski also complimented Feist and said thanks to initiatives like the All Candidates’ Forum and the Women’s Conference and Trade Show; the Chamber is now “officially selfsustaining.”

“Whenever possible give local businesses a chance to provide you a product (before going out of town)…please help support local businesses. Without support we can’t support groups,” said Ernst.

“The Chamber provides a lot of good information and activities. It promotes community growth.”

Homemade Granola Bars

My newest recipe is for homemade granola bars. They are very easy to make and this recipe yields 10 to 12

bars.

First of all, use the large flake oats. You can use it right out of the bag or roast the 2 cups of rolled oats in the oven for 15 minutes at 350 degrees.

Be sure the dates that you buy are pitted. For the dates you will need to use a blender or food processer to puree them. I think the sticky nature of the dates, makes them hard to process. I found my small food processor could not do the work, but the blender was fine.

You can also use half a cup dates and half of a cup of prunes (which are only dried plums) for this recipe with excellent results. The chopped mass will still be a little chunky, but I have found that when the blender will not go any farther that this point is good enough.

The combined cup of coconut, nuts and seeds can be of your choosing. I have enjoyed using one half of a cup of a combination of slivered almonds, walnuts and sunflower seeds. The coconut can

be omitted but it must be replaced with an additional one half cup of either oatmeal, other nuts, seeds, chocolate chips, raisins or dried berries and fruit.

You can get creative and make your own signature artisan granola bars. I also made some Paleo grain free bars in which the rolled oats was substituted out with fine unsweetened coconut. They also turned out great.

If you want the bars to be softer and chewy, then do not heat the honey. If you want bars with a sturdy, crisp texture, like the ones you buy, then you should heat the honey in a small pot just before pouring it over the oatmeal.

Honey is super sticky, so line the pan with parchment paper as your first choice over wax paper. I have made the bars with both a quarter of a cup of honey and a third of a cup. It is really your preference depending on the sweetness you desire.

I think the perfect amount of honey would be a scant one third of a cup.

Home Made Granola Bars (no bake) 2 cups large flake rolled oats 1 cup pitted dates, pureed.

1/2 cup unsweetened fine or shredded coconut 1/2 cup nuts and/or seeds 1/3 cup honey

“The Poster Child” For The Online Parts Technician Program

When Jen Lewis says she’ll get something done, she delivers on her promise.

The of fice manager at Nitro Nut Mechanical in Warburg had managed the shop’s parts inventory for about eight years but was asked last year to also order parts for the mechanics. “Our head mechanic was spending more time ordering parts than he was working on equipment so they asked me to take on that job. I did and I’ve enjoyed the challenge,” she says.

Wanting to learn more about the parts technician trade, she looked into training options in Alberta. When she discovered that Lakeland College and Red Deer College offer the parts technician program online through eCampusAlberta, she decided to register.

“If it wasn’t available online, I’m not sure if I’d have done the training,” says Lewis.

As a mother of two children and co-owner of a delivery company in Warburg, she didn’t want to move to Edmonton for up to eight weeks to take the apprenticeship technical training at NAIT. “It isn’t easy for me to get away. Online was definitely the best option for me,” says Lewis, 39. Lakeland College offers periods one and three of the parts technician program; Red Deer College offers period two.

With the flexible start and completion dates that the online option provides, Lewis hoped to complete two training periods during the 2014-2015 academic year. She exceeded even her own expectations when she finished all three training periods in only nine months. “It went so well I just continued,” she says.

Lewis credits Lakeland instructor Chris Noster for her success in the program.

“If it wasn’t for him, I probably wouldn’t have completed all three periods in one year. He was very supportive,” she says.

Noster refers to Lewis as “the poster child” for online learning. “She is an outstanding student who achieved very high marks.

I am extremely impressed with Jen’s accomplishments,” he says.

become a certified journeyman.

While becoming a journeyman parts technician will mean an increase in her wage, that wasn’t the main reason she took the training.

“I did this because I wanted to know more about parts and help create a system so we can make things run smoother in our shop. The information has been very helpful,” says Lewis, noting that she learned not only about individual parts and how they operate, but also how they work with other parts. Ordering, receiving and storing parts, managing inventory and office management were among the other topics covered.

“I’d definitely recommend this online option to others. I spent many evenings and weekends doing course work. I’m still not sure how I managed to get (all three periods) done, but I’m glad I did,” she says.

The parts technician program has two specializations – parts and materials. Lewis completed the parts portion and plans to challenge the second period exam for the materials specialization which focuses on the movement of materials. 2 tablespoons peanut or almond butter 1 tablespoon olive oil Lightly cook the oatmeal in a 8 x 8 pan at 350 degree (optional). Process the dates in a blender to chop them. They will be able to form into a ball. In a bowl, combine the chopped dates, the oatmeal, nuts, coconut and seeds etc. Line the bottom of an 8x8 pan with parchment paper. Really work the dates into the oatmeal mixture; you may have to use your hands. Combine the olive oil with the nut butter. Add the nut butter mixture and the honey, (uncooked for softer bars and cooked for crisper bars) and stir until the honey is well distributed throughout the mixture. Pour into your prepared pan and press the mixture down well. Put in the freezer to cool. When cool turn the mass out of the pan and cut it apart down the middle, and then cut each side into 5 or 6 bars.

Church Helps Feed Children Cross Canada Walk Run Roll destroyed in the devastating earthquake and has remained standing even though it has several cracks to the walls and foundation. Trigo says he and his family feel very blessed as not everyone was able to escape that area with their lives and many people lost everything.

“About 70 to 100 people attend church service at Dayspring Church. Many people lost their homes and possessions. Due to the devastation to the area the church has only been able to focus on helping the people. Their priority has been in feeding and supporting the needs of the people – especially children,” said Trigo.

The congregation at Dayspring is made up of mostly fishermen who earn very little money so the majority of the funding to help cover costs has come from the Trigo family who live in Canada.

“We felt as a church it was important to help. Having a personal connection between our church and the Dayspring Church is important as well. We will look forward to hearing how the money we raise will help them to continue to help families and also help repair the church. We can make a dif ference and with the support of the people in this community - we will,” said Hodges Marlowe.

On October 15, 2013 the Philippines’ Bohol Island Province was struck by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake – the strongest to hit the area in 25 years. Since that time the area has had over 4,000 aftershocks of which the strongest was recorded at a magnitude of 5.3.

Glad Tidings Pentecostal Assembly will be hosting a fundraiser on Saturday, May 30th at 5:30 p.m. to bring an update to our community on the work that continues to be done to recover from the devastating earthquake and aftershocks.

“When the earthquake struck the world reached out to help the Philippines but it is important to understand they have not recovered from the devastation. There is still a lot of work to be done as aftershocks continue to create problems,” said Susan Hodges Marlowe, board member of Glad Tidings Pentecostal Assembly.

“There are many Philippine families in our church family which gives us a personal connection to the area. Psalm Trigo’s father is the pastor of Dayspring Church which is located in the Bohol Island Province. We are able to partner with him in helping the people of his church and area.”

It started with Terr y Fox and his attempt to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. Steve Fonyo followed with a successful cross Canada run to raise money for Cancer research. It continued with Rick Hansen and his Man in Motion World Tour to raise money for spinal cord research. The Cross Canada walk/run/whatever has become a familiar form of fund-raising attention getting for lots of causes.

Passing through Vermilion on Monday, May 18 was Steve O’Brien on his Cross Canada Tour to raise awareness for children’s activity.

“Everywhere I stop, I seek out the schools, the youth groups, etc. and let them know that we are here to listen to their concerns,” said Steve O’Brian, when he stopped at St. Jerome’s in Vermilion on Tuesday morning. He had a similar message for J.R. Robson High School .

“Family life has changed so much in the last 30 years, kids today are very bright, but they have little to no physical activity.“ “When I was young, my mother stayed home, and we went outside and played all of the time. Whether it was Kick the Can, a pick-up baseball game, or just heading down to the local swimming hole. We were active,” he said.

“But today, everybody is so tied to technology that they just don’t get out and get active. For example when I was in Edmonton, I stayed with a cousin. After dinner, both the kids and the parents

“My trip isn’t about raising money, although we do get some donations, it’s about raising awareness that we need to listen to and support the youth of our communities. That parents have to make time to spend quality time with their children.”

“I cannot even begin to count the number of children that I have talked to that both their parents work, so there is no time for the family. They get up, they go to school or day care, they go home, have supper, and then nothing. Everybody is either too busy with work, or too tired from work to spend any time being a family.”

Steve is alternating between means of transportation on his journey. In the morning, to warm up he will start by walking or running five kilometers. Then approximately every five kilometers he will change his method of transportation.

Depending on road and weather conditions it may be roller blades, long board (an extra long skateboard), scooter, bike, adapted bike and a wheel chair. All the methods are ones that have been chosen by kids that he has talked with.

“If I can find one, I’m even going to add a pogo stick to the mix,” said O’Brien.

Lloydminster Ladies Charity Golf Scramble Back

Co-Chair of the sixth Lloydminster Ladies Charity Golf Scramble, Heather Tebey, is hoping for a solid turnout for this year’s tournament despite it being a more difficult year for sponsorship and registrations.

“The way the market is, it’s tough,” said Tebey. “Registration is slow right now, but we’re hoping for 144 (participants).”

Although the tournament was on hiatus last year, overall the charity golf tournament has raised $77,000 in five years added Tebey.

All of the proceeds from the tournament are donated to the Lloydminster Region Health Foundation (LRHF) to augment and enhance healthcare provided by the Lloydminster Hospital, Dr. Cooke Extended Care Centre, Jubilee Home and Community Health Care Services.

Although it is presently undecided where the proceeds from this year’s tournament will specifically go, Tebey said “The LRHF is so important; it does a lot of good work. The fundraising provides equipment the province isn’t able to fund, one year it was allotted to the mammography unit.”

Each year of the tournament the organizer s have selected a theme and people dress t h e m s e l ve s a n d their carts accordingly.

“You can imagine what some of

the carts looked like that year,” Tebey joked. “Another year was a Mexican theme and people showed up as mariachis and in sombreros.”

This year’s theme is “Tee it Up tacky style – the tackier the better…there are so many variations of tacky out there.”

The tackiest will be awarded a prize.

“People think it’s competitive, but it’s not, it’s just fun.” Tebey added, “It’s a great charity because everyone will have health issues. It impacts everyone.”

Different sponsorship opportunities are available. Single player registration is $100 which includes supper.

It was a full day for the 4-H Light Horse Club who held their Achievement Day on Monday, May 18 which included a horse show and a gymkhana on the grounds of the Vermilion Ag. Society.

“Achievement Day is about celebrating what we have achieved throughout the year,” said General Leader, Krystal Enstrom.

Fifteen members took par t in the horse show which included: Showmanship, English Pleasure, English Equit ation, Wester n Pleasure and Western Equitation; while 16 members participated in the gymkhana’s events of Barrel Racing, Pole Bending and Keyhole Race. Hesston Zach made it back just in time to ride in the gymkhana after playing in a hockey tournament.

During the gymkhana one of the younger members of the group, Josslyn Smith, showed a mighty dose of courage after her mini-horse, the aptly named Rascal, threw her off during the Barrel Race. She took a few minutes to recover and “got back on the horse” as they say, and reined Rascal in and finished the course.

Achievement Day also recognized two members who stood out as most improved and most dedicated to the club.

The Most Dedicated Award went to club member, Brianne Hrychiuk.

“This award goes to the member who attends the most events, is the most helpful and who is a good role model,” said Enstrom.

The Most Improved was awarded

to Emily Elder who showed the most improvement with her project horse and worked the hardest during the year added Enstrom.

Although Achievement Day officially marks the end of the 4-H season in terms of meetings for the club, there is still plenty more to do.

“We have the parade and gymkhana (Vermilion Fair), volunteering and the Lloyd Expo.”

Regular meetings of the 4-H Light Horse Club will begin again in September.

How To Maintain Your Concrete Paver Driveway Submitted

An interlock driveway or walkway can add distinct curb appeal and elegance to an otherwise dull outside of your home. This is typically the first element that anyone sees when visiting or passing by your house; therefore, it’s important to maintain and keep it in top condition.

If there is a valid argument against selecting properly installed interlocking concrete pavers, it is that the jointing sand used to stabilize the pavers creates ongoing and frustrating maintenance issues. It erodes with the onset of wind and rain. It is fertile ground for airborne weed seeds and an inviting home for nearby ant colonies.

This is especially true with the popular high-end, tumbled pavers with irregular edges and rounded corners.

Today, greener options abound, adding to the myriad of choices already available.

“Heightened interest in incorporating renewable resources into the home has resulted in many beautiful eco-friendly flooring options,” says Alan Stewart, broker-manager with Royal LePage Sussex in North Vancouver.

For homeowners looking on the greener side, Stewart suggests a look at the many sustainable products available today: • Give a tree another lease on life with salvaged wood flooring. A rustic look can be created with reclaimed wood. Buying reclaimed lumber continues to get easier, and in some instances, less expensive relative to the cost of new hardwoods. An Internet search under reclaimed wood, reclaimed timber or reclaimed lumber should yield results.

• Bamboo is a good option for rooms with low humidity. High abundance and a natural look make sustainable bamboo an attractive flooring option. Bamboo grows to maturity in three to five years, about a quarter of the time it takes to grow trees used for hardwood.

• Linoleum flooring has retained its popularity over decades. Unlike vinyl flooring, which is a synthetic product made of chlorinated petrochemicals, linoleum is manufactured from natural compounds including linseed oil, cork dust, tree resins and ground limestone.

With natural, renewable elements used in its manufacturing, the popularity of this

eco-friendly flooring option continues to rise.

• Cork flooring has many eco-friendly attributes. Like bamboo, cork is quickly renewable. It is harvested from the bark of the cork oak tree and grows back every three years. Cork has anti-microbial properties to reduce allergens, is fire retardant and provides a comfortable feel under foot. Cork flooring can be finished in a variety of paints and stains to complement any room setting.

• Polyester (P.E.T.) Berber carpet is a sustainable option made of recycled plastic bottles. Don’t Miss The Fifth Biggest Pro Rodeo In Canada

Rodeos have been held at the Lea Park location since the late 1920’s and this year it will have been held consecutively for 61 years.

“It’s the fifth biggest Pro Rodeo in Canada,” said Lea Park Pro Rodeo President Lloyd Gray.

“There will be approximately $100,000 in prize money paid out this year and our rodeo would not be at the caliber that it is without our sponsors.”

Lea Park has set rodeo standards over the years with the popular Wild Ride first started at Lea Park, it is now being held in many rodeos throughout the country.

Chute music was also a first that was introduced at Lea Park.

“There will be world champions competing from around the world, with the majority being from the United States and Canada,” said Gray.

“We are expecting 10,000 people including families and children. There are camping facilities nearby for those who

want to camp.”

With the donation of time and the work of all the Lea Park rodeo committee and organizers, as well as the community support over the years, the Lea Park Rodeo is proud to be staging the 61st consecutively held rodeo. The Lea Park Rodeo will take place June 5th, 6th, and 7th at the Lea Park located 10 miles north of Marwayne.

Events will include Bareback Riding, Steer Wrestling, Team Roping, Tie-Down Roping, Ladies Barrel Racing, Saddle Bronc and Bull Riding.

Friday June 5 - 1st round for timed events at 3:00 p.m. Rodeo Performance - 6:00 p.m.

Saturday June 6 - Pancake Breakfast 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. (Marwayne Arena).

Chamber Lunch At Anthony’s Grill Alberta Health Services Promotion Facilitator Neil Harris from Lloydminster gave a presentation to the Vermilion Chamber at the monthly Chamber lunch at Anthony’s Grill, May 20. The presentation looked in detail at information about mental health problems and how common mental health problems are. It also looked at how to identify a troubled employee and how to help and support a troubled employee in the work place. There was also a 14 minute video about how to identify resources for getting help.

National Health And Fitness Day Mayor Bruce MacDuff signed the declaration for National Health and Fitness Day (June 6 th) on Wednesday, May 20th with the Vermilion Wellness Coalition at the fitness pod east of J.R. Robson School in the park on 44 th Street. The Vermilion Wellness Coalition hopes that individuals and families get active on June 6th. “The fitness park, was a project mostly funded through grant dollars from the Alberta tire recycling program and cost Vermilion taxpayers $4 each in 2012 for a long-term fitness facility that is usable for all ages at any time of day,” said Director of Community Services Shawn Bell. “The Wellness Coalition would like to encourage community members to use the fitness pod. In partnership with the Provincial Park we have installed our Frisbee Golf sets so take your frisbee and come out and play,” said VIBE coordinator Pat Calyniuk. On May 14, the Grade 1 classes walked to the Valley Lodge with gardening gloves and shovels in hand to assist the residents in preparing their flower beds. Students pulled weeds and turned the dirt in various beds so that flowers could be planted. This field trip fit in well with the science curriculum they are currently learning about entitled, “The Needs of Plants and Animals”. When the job was finished, students were given a tasty popsicle treat for all their efforts.

Our AR assembly was held on May 19.

Mrs. Webb discussed May’s virtue of citizenship with the students and gave them some ideas on how to be good citizens.

Grade 5 did a terrific job of choral speaking, citing a Maya Angelou poem. Grade 2-6 students have now read over 18 000 points in AR, so Mr. Beecroft will continue to grow his beard for another month.

The VES Parent Council had a meeting on May 19. The Grade 3 teachers shared about the positive impact Marty Chan had on student writing. Marty Chan spent a week with our students in a writing residency program this winter and excellent

writing is still evident in students’ daily work. Trustee King discussed budget and the new School Act, as well as celebrating the work BTPS math teachers have been doing. Trustee Huedepohl toured five German schools and shared his observations. VES administration discussed plans for the upcoming school year. The next PAC meeting will be held September 21 at 7:00 p.m.

The VES Hot Lunch Society is an amazing organization that helps take the pressure off of parents, students, and staff, by providing us with a hot lunch on three days every week. This society will be putting on a dance to help raise money for the program. The dance will be held in the VES gym on June 12 from 5:30 p.m. -8:30 p.m. with DJ Shannon Leonard providing the music. There will be hot dogs, salads and beverages served. $5 will get you music, food, and lots of fun besides. Please come out and support this tremendous cause.

Led by Miss Ishaq, the Grade 7 Leadership class’ current project involved adding a planter-garden to the school.

Students held a bake sale last week during noon hour and raised $130 in efforts to purchase some greenery. Their flower garden was prepared and planted last Friday in the east outdoor common area.

Mr. Woodward’s Grade 10 Physical Education students—nearly 30 of them!— canoed down the North Saskatchewan River for two days last week. Timed with great weather, the combination of kids, food, campfire stories and paddling skills made for an unforgettable trip. The P. E. 20 and 30 students will have their chance at a paddling and camping trip in June.

In Grade 10 Social Studies class, students were invited by Mr. Maier to attend the First Nations Culture and Language Celebration Day. The event was hosted by Blue Quills First Nations

Grade 9 students participated in “It Can’t Happen Me” on Friday, May 8. The day started off with a mock accident scene. Presentations by the Vermilion Fire Department, Prairie EMS, RCMP, Lakeland Funeral Home, and Health Unit were made during this time. Boston Pizza donated pizzas for lunch and the students had to eat lunch with some type of disability. After lunch the students visited the ER, X-ray department and the Ambulance.

Students found out that in a severe accident most patients need about 50 units of blood, which most small hospitals do not have. Guest speaker, Reyane Wade, was seriously injured when a distracted driver hit the stalled vehicle she was in. She had to learn how to do everything again.

“A distracted driver changed my life forever, keep your eyes on the road, don’t make someone live a life like mine.”

Boston Pizza donated pizzas. Students ate lunch with a disability. The students found the day a very informative and educational day and especially connected with Reyane.

St. Jerome’s School News

The sound of whispering voices and the pitter-patter of little feet echoed down the halls of the hospital as the kindergarten class toured the many departments.

The children learned that there is nothing to fear in the dreary X-ray room and that it is important to keep small objects out of their mouths. Giggles emerged from the bathing room as each child had a turn riding up and down in the bathing chairs. Who knew a bed could be so entertaining? The children could hardly wait to push every button on the control pad. A snack was shared outside on the grass in the bright sunshine followed by a quick game of tag in the gazebo.

The tour concluded with a visit to the grandmas and grandpas. The children were all smiles as they headed back to school eagerly anticipating the fun they would have with their newly acquired masks, gloves and hats.

Grade 5 students and their guests sat down to enjoy a supper together made by the students themselves as part as the “Cooking With Crystal” program they have been involved in over the past five weeks. The students have learned kitchen safety, proper knife care, breakfast, lunch and snack recipes. The

students have enjoyed every moment of this cooking program and are thankful to our VIBE coach, Crystal for teaching them all these skills.

Thirty-six Grade 10 and 11 students and four adults headed to Olds to attend ASLC, the Alberta Student Leadership Conference from May 10-12. “Jacked Up Leadership ….. Steering the Future” was the theme of this year’s conference.

Students participated in a variety of inspirational, educational, and motivational activities and break out sessions. David Baribaldi – a performance painter, Tenille – an Albertan singer/songwriter, Cara Filler – youth motivational speaker, and Mark Scharenbroich – who is passionate about serving others were the keynote speakers. The students enjoyed meeting some of the 800 other students who also attended the event, the hypnotist, and the MOGA – Most Outrageous Group Activity dance routine in the park. Our leadership students came back to school excited to share their experiences and skills they had acquired.

Lions Club Tournament Now In Its 18th Year

Organizer and Lions Club member, Cliff Rolheiser said there are two reasons the Lions-CNIB Charity Golf Tournament has been such a successful and longstanding fundraiser.

“The community has supported us year after year and the CNIB is a good organization dedicated to helping people,” said Rolheiser.

For the 18th year in a row the Vermilion Lions Club will be hosting the event. The proceeds will be spilt 50/50 between the CNIB and local programs. Some of the programs include: FOCUS, Marauders Football Club, Ukrainian Cultural Dance Association, STARS Ambulance, Vermilion Minor Ball Association, Vermilion Library and the Royal Canadian Legion, among others.

“We’re hoping for between 50 to 60 people, but it’s still too early to tell,” said Rolheiser.”

The tournament is a best ball scramble format which means anyone can participate. “Even if you haven’t golfed before, you’re not going to hold anyone up.”

This type of play encourages all skill levels to get involved.

A trademark of the tournament is to blindfold golfers on the 1st and 9th holes. “ We also have a CNIB representative coming out to the course this year.”

Goggles replicating various degrees of vision loss are also on hand during the tournament for the players to try on.

Rolheiser also remarked that all the improvements that have been made to the golf course will make the day even more enjoyable.

The Lions Club’s affiliation with the CNIB has a long history. In 1925 Helen Keller put forth a challenge to the organization to become “knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness.” The CNIB helps people with partial loss of vision.

You don’t have to be legally blind to seek help.

The Grade 5-9 students competed in our school based track and field in period 7/8 Physical Education time between the 19th and 21st of May. The students competed in various events in mixed grade groups and we celebrated their achievements within their grade level.

We are hoping that this event will allow our older students to help mentor the younger students and develop track and field skills for future years to come. Interested junior high students will be participating in the BTJHAA Northerns Track and Field on May 26th at JR Robson, with a chance to win a spot at the Finals on June 2.

May 9, brought an excited bunch of runners out to the annual Lakeland Runaway and Walk on the Wild Side event at the Vermilion Provincial Park. All the runners enjoyed beautiful weather and fantastic runs, one racer even received a medal. Students running in the 2K: Trevis Rewuski, Hannah Rewuski and Bryan Pankiw. 10K participants were: Keagan Rewuski (3rd place finish), Shannon Bakos and Susanna Pankiw. Students who place first, second or third move on to the Zones in Fort McMurray. From our school it will be Kenzie, Marty, Stephen, Chelsea and Neil.

While we are on the topic of sports, our sports teams will be out on Thursday, June 4 doing their last bottle drive in town for this school year. Again, we thank everyone for any donations. The money is used to help offset expenses for our athletes.

ing with our VIBE coach, Mrs. Lorenson. Students have been practising their bumble bee breathing and relaxation techniques.

Our Grade 4 class has been busy learning about the First Nations people, the fur trade and the beginnings of settlement in Alberta. They have explored how the fur trade expanded west and how the establishment of trading posts or forts influenced settlement. Plans are now underway for a field trip to see Fort Edmonton.

Remember Mrs. Campbell and her Grade 3 class decorating Ukrainian Easter Eggs … well they are planning to see the Ukrainian Village on their field trip.

MP for Vegreville Wainwright Leon Benoit congratulated seniors on the renovations at the Vermilion Seniors Centre, May 20. The funding for the renovations was $24,500 allocated to the Vermilion Senior Centre from the New Horizons for Seniors Program.

The funding was used to replace the old stage, allowing seniors to continue offering health, wellness, and educational, social and cultural events.

“On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, I want to thank you today for continuing to contribute to this country. I want to thank the drop in centre here in Vermilion.

Our government is pleased to work with organizations like yours because what you’re doing is allowing seniors to remain active in the community, who continue to do things to build our town and our community. I want to congratulate you on the work that you have done here. I am delighted that the government of Canada could contribute $24,500 for the new stage and you have done a great job,” announced Leon Benoit, Member of Parliament for Vegreville Wainwright.

Judy Woyewitka said, “We’ve come a long way in the last two months of renovations. We got the new stage replaced; new railing and we painted the hall. The flag presentation today is symbolic that it was a Canadian project.”

Executive Assistant Diane Dunn said, “We set ourselves the goal of one month and we are delighted that we hit our target.”

“Through initiatives such as the New Horizons for Seniors Program, we are helping to ensure that seniors maintain a high quality of life and continue as active, participating members of their communities,” said MP Leon Benoit.

Clandonald 4-H Achievement Day

It was a busy day for the 18 members of the Clandonald 4-H Multi-Club who held their Achievement Day on Saturday, May 23. There was barely a moment to spare as Judges Kurt and Becky Peterson, along with Ring man Andrew Convey and M.C. Kali Brodbin kept the show going at a steady pace. At the end of the day, Judge Kurt Peterson wished the members luck in their upcoming district show adding they may even notice a difference of opinion in the judging.

World War II Veterans Honoured With Commemorative Lapel Pins

Limited edition commemorative lapel pins and personalized certificates of recognition signed by Prime Minister Stephen Harper were presented to Veterans Kenneth Gilbert and Mike Sayna at the Vermilion Royal Canadian Legion, Wednesday May 20.

Among their family, friend s and community, the two local WWII Veterans were honoured for the extraordinary role Canadians played in the Allied victory

Veteran Charlie Blackford was unable to attend the presentation but will also be receiving the commemorative lapel pin and certificate.

The limited-edition commemorative lapel pin is modeled from the Victory Nickel minted between 1943 and 1945 near the end of WWII. “Today I am humbled and it is my privi-

lege to have this opportunity to recognize our World War II Veterans here in Vermilion. Thank you for serving, it is due to your remarkable contributions that our nation has been able to remain strong and free,” MP Benoit told both Veterans.

Veteran Mike Sayna reminisced about the three years he served in World War II in the countries of the Netherlands, Germany, France and Beligum.

“I was a driver and instructor. I remember when the planes would come in and light up the skies. We survived. The people were starving.”

The family of Audrey LARMOUR would like to take this time to thank everyone for their love and support during the short time Audrey was ill and during our recent loss. We appreciated the beautiful flowers, the delicious food, the telephone calls and the cards/ donations that we received during this difficult time. A SPECIAL THANK YOU to Dr. Stewart Hunter, the Ambulance Attendants, the Doctors and Staff at the Royal Alex and Cross Cancer Hospitals and an immense thank you to the Palliative Care Nurses at the Vermilion Hospital that made Audrey’s last days bearable. We would also like to thank Sam Donaldson, John Mc Gregor and Jerven Weekes for officiating the service along with Lakeland Funeral Home for the funeral arrangements. We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to Anne McMinis/Bob Ernst and Robert and Jeanette Drake for all their help during Audrey’s illness. Family and friends were invited to a meal at Nick’s Family Restaurant, after the service, a tradition that Audrey held dear. Thank you Nick and Staff for the enjoyable meal and your kind consideration.
