The Vermilion Public Library, Vermilion River Watershed Alliance, and North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance hosted a Wetland Explorers – Buggin’ out Down by the River, for children aged 5-12 on July 22.

Under nice warm conditions the children had the opportunity to do net dipping for all kinds of water creatures, participate in outdoor activities, and listen to a story read

by Shelia Heit, Program Coordinator from the Vermilion Public Library about what a bird is and creatures similar to birds except they don’t have feathers. Attendees also had the opportunity to watch a demonstration put on by the North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance on what a watershed is and how humans can impact the water that flows into waterways like the Vermil-

ion River. The children in attendance were full of excitement and eagerness to participate in the activities and to learn about the species which thrive in watersheds and to learn how the water enters the watersheds and how pollution can disrupt and pollute these important waterways.

Sheila Heit, Programs Coordinator for the Vermilion Public Library stated that they partnered with the Vermilion River Watershed Alliance and the North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance to put together this event.

The event had three representatives Jillian Calvert, Rosey Radmanovich and Kaila Belovich from the North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance as well as Chris Elder from the County of Vermilion ALUS program on hand to speak with and educate Sheila Heit, program coordinator from the Vermilion Public Library reading a book to the children about birds. the 20 children in attendance.

New Resident Goats In Town

A goat initiative is underway at the Town of Vermilion, thanks to a partnership with Yellowhead Grazing.

There are 50 does and their kids currently grazing at the East Point Business Park, and then they will be moved to the river hill.

“The goats are to help reduce invasive weed species and tackle hard to reach areas. They have been out 30 hours now, and they’ve nearly cleared one section working on about a half an acre at a time,” said Director of Community Services, Sarah Paterson.

The town has said that residents are

welcome to check out to the goats, but not to feed them as they are working animals. So far resident comments are supportive of the project, noting that it is environmentally friendly.

Marisa Schuebel, co-owner of Yellowhead Grazing, said the use of goats has definitely become more popular as a land management strategy. Projects include areas that are usually rough cut or on hillsides where weed whackers are needed. Along with her husband Kolter, the young farmers have managed a goat herd since 2018 doing targeted grazing on farms around Vermilion but this is their first urban project. They live in town

and work in the area, so that’s why they wanted to approach Vermilion as their first community.

Marisa has an animal science degree from the University of Saskatchewan and she teaches animal science at Lakeland College. Kolters relatives had previous reports on grazing goats in Wyoming, so the couple decided to dive into that stream as well.

Schuebel said goats are child friendly so with summers off at the college, she is able to take her one and three year old with her while she is moving fence. The project is expected to take approximately six weeks but will depend on how much and how fast they eat. She is also working on an accreditation program with Alberta Lamb Producers so that people can learn more about targeted grazing and to help create more trained individuals to start up their own operations.

“There are not enough goats to do all the jobs out there. They eat weeds the best. Sheep are more like a cow in that they require more grass, where goats are more like a deer and require more concentrated feed. They will stand up on their hind feet and eat

anything,” said Schuebel. “To start our business we wanted targeted grazing for concentrated weed management. You have to understand plants and nutrition as well as a goat’s feeding behaviour. They will have a three day paddock rotation with a variety of plant material in each paddock, and then I will move them. We strategically place pens in order to improve the landscape as well as to manage our animals.”

The goats will work to reduce fire hazards, control invasive weed species and undergrowth, and safely and ef ficiently graze rough terrain before they go to winter at Pearman Farms.

An advocate for young farms that do not own land Schuebel said, “We’re thankful to have kind friends that help us. It ’s agriculture, but you have to think how you can raise animals without owning land. Young people get discouraged because the start up cost is so expensive. In order to not end up in debt, you have to think outside the box. For now we are nook and cranny farming but eventually plan to build the business and buy our own land.”

Carl had a special love for children. It didn’t matter whose they were and he’d always try to have a little something to give them. Carl was always willing to help and would gladly give you his version of how he would do it. He was known for his carpentry skills, his latest receipes and his leather work.

Vermilion Fire Department Approved For New Drone

Town Council approved the request for the remaining costs of a Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced drone for the Vermilion Fire Department with the initial costs covered by the Vermilion Rotary Club. The drone will be equipped with thermo-imaging and a camera, so from firefighting to search and rescue, Fire Chief Anton Krys says there are many possibilities of what the drone can do.

The Town will make the initial purchase but will be reimbursed $10,000 by the Rotary Club for the drone and training; leaving the Town to cover insurance and registration as well as potential battery or drone replacement in the future.

“A drone, which has been on the wish list for some time, is not an essential piece of firefighting equipment but another tool in the toolbox. It will be a huge asset to the Vermilion Fire Depar tment, the Town of Vermilion and surrounding area, so we were very excited and grateful when the Vermilion Rotary Club approached us on a partnership in purchasing the drone,” said Krys.

The drone will help firefighters see through the smoke to help them avoid potential risks.

“The thermo-imaging can detect heat sources, whether it is a fire or a human body. We can use the drone to determine if a fire is spreading in remote areas or if it crossed a water body without physically being there, or if the fire is completely extinguished. Also, in the case of a missing person, we can use the thermo-imaging to detect body heat and search a large area quickly. It can be used to give an overall picture of a fire scene, dangerous good incident,

accident scene, or an area of devastation to help determine access, damage, and resources required. We can also record events in video and use them for evidence or training for a later date.

The list of uses continues to grow as we think about the drone and our capabilities,” said Krys.

Because there are existing mutual aid agreements with the County of Vermilion River, neighbouring counties and communities, he said they too will have access to the drone through the Vermilion Fire Department. Several members in the depar tment will be attending special training required to operate the drone when it arrives. Krys said drones in the fire emergency service is not a new concept, however due to technology changes, the uses and reliability has increased so they are being used more and more.

“The Vermilion Fire Department with the Town of Vermilion are continuously trying to improve public safety, protection of property, firefighter safety, and skills and tactics of firefighting and rescue,” explained Krys.

The Town of Vermilion hosted a barbecue and sod turning with Alberta Broadband Networks at the Vermilion Regional Centre to signify the start of their broadband initiative in the community on July 21.

The barbecue provided an opportunity for residents to gain information about the fibre soon to be installed in various neighbourhoods in the community.

Door hangers had previously been handed out in areas of the community that are currently having fibre laid, and attendees discussed speeds they will soon be able to access.

CAO, Kevin Lucas, said the average homeowner would be able to access higher than traditional speeds and businesses would have access to additional speeds.

“Those upload and download rates are second to none in Alberta at this point.

Vermilion would be the first in Alberta even in an urban setting with this speed,” said Lucas.

During the barbecue Mayor Throndson spoke to residents saying that the high speed

fibre would give Vermilion a competitive advantage, and help put the community on the map for potential home buyers or business owners looking to set up shop.

“This project is the largest project that the Town of Vermilion has been involved in as it affects every inch of our community,” said Throndson. “It affects all sectors including business retention, expansion, and investment as well as job creation; sale of industrial, highway commercial and residential lots; residents; health care – including attracting doctors, emergency services; education (Lakeland College, schools, or training within our industry sectors); and tourism.”

To compete for potential growth with larger municipalities, Throndson said they have to provide high speed broadband and diversify the community. This broadband project will enable them to become a SMART community, which he said will allow residents to live and play in Vermilion, but work elsewhere without moving.

Further information regarding the project is expected to be announced in late August or September.

Full Throttle At The Run To The Hills Bike Rally

The Run To The Hills Bike Rally brought over 600 visitors to Two Hills from July 14 -24, a well as several off-site events in neighbouring communities.

Having run for 15 years with proceeds going to support the Wayside Fallen Riders Memorial, there is now a monument and a chapel at the Wayside Memorial Park.

This year’s rally included RCW wrestling, a chili cook-off, live music, a group ride, car and bike show, pig roast, etc.

Crowds enjoyed performances by local artist Abygale Durie and a charity concert

by Midnight Echo out of Vancouver. Event coordinator, Bob Ross, said they have a strong regular base but see more and more new faces each year. Although a majority of the riders came from Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia; their furthest rider was from Chapala, Mexico.

Dan Hudon from The Axe Man Studio previously lived in Vermilion and said his business started as a hobby but now that he is in retirement, he is enjoying being able to sell some of his work.

“I really enjoy seeing what I can do with the raw product and comparing the finished product,” commented Hudon.

Dad shook his head in wonderment as he leaned on the sink, gazing out the kitchen window where streams of water had begun their descent for yet another day.

He turned away, shaking his head, but catching my eye, a smile slowly widened under his bushy, gray moustache.

“Ah well,” he said with customary optimism, “it could be worse.”

I confess there are times when people with so much bloody, bright-eyed cheerfulness are annoying to those of us looking forward to a day spent in a downward spiral of self-pity. However, as I’ve always found, father knows best. It’s healthiest for the mind and body to focus on the silver

From a duck’s point of view, the weather’s great. I see them happily frolicking in sloughs and ditches each day as I rumble down country roads in my bus. Carefree and light of heart, they paddle in large clusters by the road to mull over the day’s events or assemble, gossiping in ditches.

“Have you seen Bert and Harriet’s new nest? I mean, seriously—who uses mud and sticks anymore?”

Serenely they paddle about in water mere inches from my tires, calling eagerly to friends, “Sally—Maurice, get the kids and come on in. The water’s fine.”

Naturally, just as I pull abreast of the laughing crowd, Sally turns. Spotting the enormous yellow monster thundering down upon them (or so it must seem to a duck), she leaps into the air, quacking loudly.

“Alert, alert! Everyone out of the pool!”

Then, flapping wildly, with crazed indecision, everyone rises awkwardly into the air, veering off in the safest possible direc-

tion—directly in front of the bus. Dumb ducks.

Mud hens are worse. They often collect in small groups at the water’s edge in the gravel, muttering. I advanced upon a few of them the other day as they stood, huddled together arguing.

“Look, we need to get to the other side, okay,” said Max Mud Duck, self-appointed group leader. He strutted importantly around the doubtful throng, “I say we act now. And flying is out of the question. I’ve given this a lot of thought, and our best course of action is to run out like a pack of lunatics in front of that bus.”

His wife piped up from the sidelines in loud accusatory tones, “Cousin Frankie followed you on one of your hair-brained schemes last week, and we all know how that ended!” The ducks turned to stare at several mangled black feathers protruding from the mud.

“Alright, I admit that wasn’t the best plan, but I tell you, I know what I’m doing now,” Maxwell’s voice rang with conviction

as he glared at his foolish wife with beady eyes. The troop surged around him with renewed confidence (mud ducks aren’t all that bright).

They paused a second more, waiting for just the right moment to fling themselves into oncoming traffic. Heads bobbing, eyes vacant and trusting, they milled around their fearless leader.

“This is it!” Max cried, suddenly lunging onto the road. Without hesitation, they rushed forward as one, necks craning, little legs propelling them under my wheels to certain death.

Oh, don’t worry, I didn’t actually hit the silly creatures. I was expecting their heedless dash across the road and had slowed.

But if I hadn’t…

As we can see, this wet weather suits some of us just fine. And if it doesn’t, there isn’t much we can do about it anyway, so you might just as well sit back, read the newspaper and have another cup of coffee.

It could always be worse. Be thankful you aren’t a duck.

Serious Motor Vehicle Collision

On Wednesday, July 20 a serious two vehicle motor collision involving a loaded semi-truck/trailer and a ½ ton pickup on Highway 16 occured which sent out tones to several response agencies.

The Vermilion Fire Department, County #9-1, Alberta EMS and the Vermilion RCMP were dispatched. Upon arriving at the scene it was reported that one person was entrapped and there was hazardous materials leaking from the tanker trailer.

Both vehicle occupants were transported to hospital with one being airlifted to Edmonton via STARS. Traffic was reduced to one lane on the

eastbound side and the westbound lane was closed and traffic was diverted through the Town of Vermilion.

The accident required many moving parts and additionally had to utilize Town of Vermilion Peace Officers, Alberta Sheriffs and Alberta Environment, Emcon Services and RCMP Traffic Analyst.

County of Vermilion Protective Services would like to remind motorist that when coming upon an accident scene to please reduce your speed and watch out for the responders on the scene.

Lakeland Rowing Club Host Provincial Canada Summer Games Rowing Team

Under beautiful skies and warm weather the Lakeland Rowing Club hosted the Provincial Canada Summer Games (CSG) Provincial Rowing Team from July 22-24. In hosting the camp the Lakeland Rowing Club provided the 24 member team and their coaches Michael Simonson, Jenny McGuinness and Tim Fleming with the use of their boats. The purpose of the visit was to attend a rowing camp in preparation for the Canada Summer Games in Niagara in August of this year; unfortunately not all team athletes were in attendance as they were competing in Italy for the U23 and U19

competition. Throughout the weekend the athletes also used the camp time for team building/bonding, high-intensity training and starting the boat selection process.

On Friday evening the athletes met at the docks in the Provinicial Park for a meeting and to get in some practice time.

On Saturday, the team practiced pretty much all day and then enjoyed pizza which was prepared at the open oven and purchased through Express Pizza.

“Express Pizza and Subway were so helpful with our large food orders and we really appreciate it, we also purchased gluten free desserts from Prairie Bakeshop and Bistro which was great,” commented Lakeland Rowing Club

member, Kati White.

Sunday was the final day and the team had an early morning practice before heading to Edmonton for Team Alberta Staging where they received their Team Alberta logo gear and swag.

“We would like to thank the Provincial Park staff for being so welcoming to our athletes during their stay there. And I would like to mention that we received a lot of comments from the athletes and parents about what a great community Vermilion is!” said White.

To become a member of the Team Alberta Rowing team athletes had to attended the selection camp that was by invite only, and held in Calgary from June

17-19. The requirements to be invited to the selection camp were very aggressive implying that each participant was an extremely strong althlete.

At the end of the camp the Team Alberta Rowing Team had been selected.

Rowing has been featured at every Canada Summer Games since 1969 and was initially a male-only sport for the 1969 and 1973 games before offering it to both male and female events as of 1977, which was expanded to six disciplines contested by both.

“We have a really talented team and it has the potential to do quite well at the games,” commented Team Coach, Michael Simonson.

Thank Goodness It’s Back

Holy cow, the Fair is back!! I can’t wait to see it all again after missing it for the last two years! Summer is halfway over and the weather thus far has been a little bit of a pain but this past week it’s been beautiful. I hope Mother Nature is kind enough to give us decent sunny weather for those three days. I don’t care if we get rain in the night while we sleep; we do need that.

As always, I am hoping to spend some relaxing time during the Fair so I can take in some of the entertainment but it is a pretty busy time for us here at the paper; so it will be a we’ll see how it goes kinda thing. If you see us around and would like to come up and say hi please do so, we love getting really great photos of all the happenings.

The rides in the Midway I absolutely won’t be utilizing but I do enjoy watching the children as they jump from one ride to another ride; it’s a blast to see their happy faces full of excitement.

The Vermilion Ag Society along with their volunteers have always done a beautiful job organizing all the events which are jam-packed with livestock events such as - beef, and sheep, shows and of course the many horse events. The trade show, open stage, and the popular beer gardens and evening entertainment.

As a reminder, our quiet town will soon be bustling with thousands of visitors, and while we are a very trusting town, I do think it is important to remember to be vigilant with our children and belongings. Don’t let the little ones wander off; it can be pretty scary when you turn around and discover your child is on the missing list and it can be even more traumatic for them when they can’t find their parents. We have to remember that with the lights and so many things to look at children do get distracted easily.

I think it is also important to remind residents and visitors to make sure your vehicles are locked when unattended and that your personal property is stored out of sight as it encourages theft when it is not secure.

As for us adults, I think it is important for us to remember that even though it is a weekend meant for fun, we all need to take care and caution with how much we drink and keep it planted solidly in our minds not to drink and drive. No one wants a DUI or death on their hands.

Enjoy the weekend with your friends and loved ones, make memories that will last a lifetime and above all else stay safe. Have wonderful fair times everyone!

Vermilion Fair Is Jam-packed With Livestock And Equine

The 2022 Vermilion Fair will showcase everything agriculture between a selection of programs from July 28-30. The Vermilion Agricultural Society is a non-profit community organization that preserves and promotes rural heritage and community spirit with the livestock shows and agricultural focus being an integral part of that commitment and the Fair.

Found in the Heritage Pavilion each day starting in the early afternoon is AGVENTURE which gives everyone an opportunity to get up close and personal with the animals in the building while learning about different aspects of farming in Alberta, rural safety, and wetland & riparian health.

The Heavy Horse Harness Show will be Thursday at 4:30 p.m., the Heavy Horse Halter Show and JR Equine will be on Friday bright and early at 8 a.m. the Heavy Horse Hitch Show is at 3 p.m. The Heavy Horse beauty continues on Saturday with the Senior/Open Equine Show, and Junior

Heavy Horse Show at 9 a.m. and the Heavy Horse Hitch Show again at 3 p.m.

The Fair attendees can take in the Wild Rose Jumping Show on Thursday at 8 a.m., on Friday Team Roping will be at 1 p.m. and there is a JR Equine show at 2 p.m. On Sunday Gymkhana takes place at 8 a.m.

Cattle Shows include the Junior Heifer Classic Steer Jackpot at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Junior Beef Show will be held at 10:30 a.m., followed by the Open Beef Show at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, and a Cow/Calf Pair/Pen of 3 Heifer Show on Saturday at 1 p.m.

is a bit concerned with the training time of having both events in the same year.

“People in the cities train in groups, but out in the countr y I have to be self-motivated and self-taught. Interval training seems to work for me. I alternate running and walking to gain endurance. Four hundred meters is a fairly good distance for a flat-out race,” said Storch. “If there is any secret to sprinting, it’s in getting a good start.

I’ve been blessed with good genetics so getting out of the blocks has been

okay for me.”

With the games star ted by Peter Laugheed, Alber ta usually has the largest team of approximately 1,200 competitor s. This year there were only 900 par ticipants following the pandemic. The games have allowed Storch to travel to Eastern Canada and all in between with his mother.

He thanked his wife for being a good, healthy cook, and said a good diet and exercise are a good foundation for anything.

National Drowning Prevention Week Provides Timely Reminder To Practice Water Safety

As summer heats up, many Albertans are visiting local pools, heading out boating, taking a dip in a lake or enjoying a rela xing river float.

However people decide to cool off in or on the water, it’s important to stay safe while beating the heat.

T hat ’s w hy A l b er t a B lu e Cr o s s ® is promoting the Lifesaving Society’s National Drowning Prevention Week, which is from July 17 to 23 this year.

Sadly, d ozens of peo ple die in water-related accidents each year.

Summer 2022 is unfor tunately no exception, as multiple drown ings have occurred already across Alberta this month.

Ac c ording to the 2021 20 -Year Drowning Analysis of Alber ta, an average of 30 Albertans drown per year—the most likely to drown are m a l e s a n d t h o s e ag e d 20 to 2 9.

M o s t d r ow n i n g s o c c ur fr o m M ay to September in lakes, ponds and rivers—even good swimmers are at risk of drowning if they fall out of a boat or are in an accident.

There are several simple steps Alber tans can take to ensure that t hey an d t h o se aroun d t hem are safe while on the water.

Properly prepare for your excursion.

Che c k both water and weather conditions before heading out on a lake or river. Weather can change and quickly become dangerous.

Make sure everyone on the water is equipped with — and wearing — life jackets that are properly fitted to each individual and approved by Transport Canada.

Ensure boats have a safet y kit and cellphone on board in case of emergencies.

It’s a good idea to have someone in your group with CPR and first aid training.

Teach basic swimming and water safety skills to children.

Children can drown in as little as one inch of water, so never leave them unsupervised in or near water.

Children should always wear life jackets in deep water or if they’re swimming beyond arms reach from the adult supervising them.

Advocate for all children to have access to swimming lessons. Children c an b eg in lear ning to swim at ages as young as one year old, depending on their individual strength and comfor t in water. It ’s a g o o d i d e a t o f i n d a sw i m m i n g lesson that you can par ticipate in along with your child at first.

Enjoy yourself—safely.

Never operate a boat while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

A selfie should never compromise your safety.

If you’re out on the water alone, make sure you let someone know where you’re going and when you plan to be back.

New ‘Know Your Food’ Trailer Touring The Province

Ag for Life is excited to announce their most recent initiative; a mobile trailer showcasing Alberta agriculture and food production that will tour the province at fairs, festivals, and schools throughout the year.

The ‘Know Your Food’ unit’s aim is to get participants involved in science and help them understand the facts about where their food comes from by exposing them to interactive education stations and sharing a balanced farmto-table story. Their goal is for everyone in the province to appreciate the Ag industry and see how greatly it impacts their lives.

said, “Our goal is that visitors leave the unit with more knowledge, interest and confidence in Alberta agriculture than what they first came in with. This, and a deeper connection to their food, where it comes from and the hard work that goes in to producing it. Junior and senior high schools are a primary destination for the unit. We believe the key to fully building trust between the agriculture industry and consumers is to educate the future generations on what makes agriculture such an important piece of our livelihoods.”

Through other initiatives in the past, they have delivered over half a million in person and online educational Ag lessons in communities around the province. With the “Know Your Food’ trailer

they simply plan to do more engaging Albertans in meaningful conversations about agriculture and food production.

New Vice President Brings Experience And Expertise To Lakeland

Having worked in a polytechnic institute with a focus on applied, hands-on learning, I am so excited to be a par t of Lakeland College where there are so many innovative programs that provide students oppor tunities for innovative experiential learning.”

Alberta Health Services Lifts COVID -19 Restrictions In Health Care Settings

On July 20, after 2.5 years of Acute Care patients being restricted from having family members accompany or visit them in acute care, ambulatory care, urgent care and emergency care sites Alberta Health Services (AHS) announced it was rescinding the COVID19 restrictions.

Throughout the pandemic AHS had placed strong restrictions limiting the number of visitors and designated family/ support persons to help reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission; which many Alberta residents felt were detrimental to their loved ones health and mental well-being. With these restrictions now lifted it removes the number of visitors and designated family/support persons permitted per patient.

On a side note that while most sites will be able to accommodate open access for visitors and designated family/support persons it is important to understand that some healthcare settings may still need to impose access limits due to the vulnerability of their patients in the event of a COVID-19 outbreak. Also noted is that there may also be limits on how many people can be in the area at one time in order to maintain physical distancing requirements. It is recommended to contact the site or the patient’s care team before visiting to find out if there are any access limits in place.

While the restrictions are being eased in regards to visitation and support per sons, it is said that the ab ove mentioned settings will still required certain measures such as entry screening, masking, physical distancing and hand hygiene.
