On July 12 Team Vermilion Ride for Cancer held their team family-friendly fundraiser at the Vermilion Heritage Park in extremely hot temperatures that didn’t seem to deter the attendees.

“We all fundraise individually but this is our team fundraiser and all the guests here this evening is by private invite as we are serving pizza and beer and we had to acquire a special license for the event,” explained Team captain, Darren Bratrud.

Bratrud and his team members worked hard baking pizza that was purchased through Express Pizza at a discounted price for the anticipated 100 guests, of which some were previous donors and

others were new faces to the fundraising event. The Ride for Cancer will take place at the Calgary Polo Club this year and Team Vermilion will be riding the long route which consists of 103 kms.

The fundraiser was a success as the team raised $1126.10.

Each team member has their reasons for participating in the ride, but Bratrud has several reasons why he has been completing the ride since 2018 as stated on his ride for cancer webpage.

“I will Ride for this cause! It is near and dear to my heart because of the great and strong people it has taken. My friend Murray Westman lost his battle with cancer in a short and intense fight. From the time he had been diagnosed, he not once had a break, he kept his hopes up

for the next test, the next hurdle, and even till the day he died, he did not give up.

In 1995, my brother Dale had a similar type of fight. After a simple tear duct surgery, he was called a few hours later and was told that he needed to be at Cross Cancer Institute Monday morning.

Six months later, we were saying goodbye to him.

In 2000, my Dad lost his battle with cancer at age 63, he was able to live with cancer for 5 years but wasn’t able to make the all-clear mark which was 5 years.

My Grandpa and my 1st cousin both died too young from cancer my cousin at 55 years old and Grandpa at 62.

There are way too many people that I

have known throughout my years that have gotten cancer and lost their battles, and there are so many living examples of people who have conquered cancer.”

Craig Brown also stated that he completes the ride because it is hard pressed to find someone whose family has not been affected by cancer.

“I have had family affected by the disease and I worked as a pharmacist my whole career and in doing so I have met so many patients affected by this; some who have survived and some who have not. These people are not just our patients they are our neighbours and friends,” commented Brown.

Mannville 4-H Barbecues For Peavy Mart

The Mannville 4-H Multi Club volunteered by barbecuing hotdogs at the Vegreville Peavy Mart’s grand opening on July 8.

Peavey Mart is a longstanding partner of 4-H and the celebration continued until July 10, allowing hundreds of customers to check out the newly expanded store.

Several locals commented how thankful they were for the lunch and shared memories of when they themselves had participated in 4-H. Alex Morse, customer service supervisor said, “The barbecue spreads the word on 4-H. A lot of people might not know what 4-H is about and can help potentially get their own children involved and seeing the value of the club.”

She said Peavy Mart has been open for 35 years in Vegreville. Throughout the pandemic, renovations and an add-on allowed them to double the size of their store.

“We’re able to bring in more customers and are now able to serve them better because we are such a huge agricultural

community.”

Shane Banack added that in a rural based community, they are excited to bring in the larger product lines; with 50,000 different items to sell on a daily basis, the old location only had room for about half of that. With Peavy Mart being 100 per cent Canadian owned and operated, he said their store location is a huge supplier of 4-H members throughout the district.

“In a rural community like this I would guess half the people in Vegreville were in a 4-H club of some sort,” said Banack.

“Without the customers we wouldn’t be here today. We’re ecstatic that everything is complete; it was chaotic for both customers and staff during our renovation, but the year long process was definitely worth the wait.”

Mannville 4-H Multi Club is one of the few youth district service clubs that continues to operate throughout the summer months. They have been in operation for over 75 years, and this year they completed two projects: Craft and Explore Alberta with three cleavers, one mini member, and seven regular members. enced members are looking forward to the possibility of receiving scholarships in the future and Sophia Myhovich said they were happy to volunteer serving

Smith shared rock samples for children and on their walk they examined wild strawberries, saskatoons, aspens, spruce, and lichens. They also discusses

the parasitic processes active in the park such as wasps laying larvae in caterpillars. It was estimated that during their spring bird count they witnessed 82 species and 1,500 plus birds.

Kayleen and Luke Falkenstein have been members of the Vermilion River Naturalist Society for the past two years.

“It’s a really great group to learn about the things around you. There are mentorships from seniors to college students,” said Kayleen, a biologist working for the Edmonton and Area Land Trust.

“It’s a good way to get some exercise and learn unique facts you wouldn’t normally get to,” added Luke.

“There has been a presence of First Nations in this area for 10-11,000 years.

I found a teepee ring on the north side of the river and registered it with the province,” said Smith.

“In 1924, Town Council approved a plan to build a campground called Auto Park, and in 1953 it was added to the provincial park system. Through the years there was a power plant, wooden dam, and a natural gas turbine. There’s all kinds of history in the park – even bison bones popping out of the banks, and a lot of cattle bones.”

Smith shared different dental facts about various animal skulls, showing which teeth are used for chewing, piercing, etc. He included a young fox skull whose teeth were still really sharp and there were no molars yet, and compared them to a large bison and moose jaws.

Todd Ree shared the spear point he found at the edge of the Lakeland College garden. Now photographed and catalogued as the Todd Ree Collectionat the Royal Alberta Museum, he said it is 9,500 years old and made out of stone called Knife River flint which originated in North Dakota. The gentleman at the museum said it was the smallest one he had ever seen, and had likely been re-worked several times.

Flying Fast At Cold Lake Air Show

Flying up to 1, 20 0 k m per hour, Royal Canadian Air Force Captain Jesse Haggart-Smith demonstrated the capabilities of a CF-18 fighter jet at the Cold Lake Air Show July 16-17.

A CF-188 Hornet (CF-18) can reach Mach 2 which is twice the speed of sound but show performances were less to avoid any loud booms or potential damages.

“Aviation isn’t inherently dangerous but it is inherently unforgiving. It’s important you are treating everything with the respect it deser ves,” said Capt. Haggart-Smith.

Leading up to the event Friday, the City of Cold Lake hosted children’s activities, vendors and entertainment.

The weekend in c lud e d ever y thing from bouncy castles to beer gardens, a monster truck, the classic car show, California Cruise (a Tom Cruise impersonator), the Sk yHawks Parachute Team, the RCAF Snowbirds, the CF-18 Demo Team, and the United States Air Force F-22 Raptor Demo Team.

the air show every two years, but due to the pandemic, their last one was in 2018, which saw 23,000 visitors of all ages over the two days. Chair of the 2022 organizing commit tee, Major Kael Rennie, said this year they had hoped to see over 30,000. Their number one location for ticket sales was Edmonton but had guests from the United States and even Europe.

“We were super excited to put one on again; there was a fantastic line-up in the air and on the ground. 4 Wing Cold Lake was extremely excited to invite the Lakeland region to take in an exciting event and see not only our RCAF in action but our allies as well.

We were ver y for tunate to have the F-22 Raptor Demo team as they are the number one attraction on the air show circuit and are only performing 2 places in Canada,” said Major Rennie.

As for Haggar t-Smith, he said he had always wanted to fly having grown up hearing stories of his grandfather in WWII. He joined the cadets at age 12, and the military at 16, and said the rest was history.

“Flight is amazing; it’s a rush just

being able to go out. It’s a lot of hard wor k w h i c h m ake s i t a ll t h e m ore rewarding, and we have a lot of fun.

O n e o f m y f avo u r i t e p a r t s o f t h e air show circuit is chatting with the people. I remember going to air shows and being in awe. Now I have to pinch myself sometimes thinking that this is my day job. I get to tour the country and meet amazing people,” said.

He began by obtaining his college b a c h e l o r ’s d e g r e e w h i c h w a s a requirement, then began pilot training in 2014 and the following year went to Moose Jaw for phase 2, 3, and 4 flight training on a CT-156 Harvard II and continued phase 4 on a BAE systems hawk. From there, he moved up to Cold Lake in 2017 where he continued training on hawk and advanced and transitioned to a CF-18 in 2018 which he has been flying ever since.

His routine during the show highl i g h t e d t h e C F -18 ’s s l o w s p e e d handling, high speed, and manoeuvrability as well as the professionalism of his fellow CAF personnel, maintenance crews and all the support that

goes into it.

“A s i d e fr o m t h e f l y i n g w h i c h i s amazingly fun and truly rewarding, a great part of the job is working with such great people day in and day out.

The level of motivation from people who are good at their job and really good people is a great environment to work in,” said Capt. Haggart-Smith.

After he finishes travelling to demos throughout the summer, he will return to being a line pilot. That position includes being on call and ready for NOR AD responses or going of f to protect Canada’s interests abroad (he has previously worked in Romania), as well as making sure they are always training so that if they ever need to answer the call, they are ready.

“I would encourage anyone interested in a career in aviation or the armed forces to take a look and see if it ’s the right fit. I’ve had a great career and amazing oppor tunities that I wouldn’t have had otherwise,” said Capt. Haggart-Smith.

‘Smart Builders’

Children were excited to participate in the Smart Builders session at the Vermilion Public Library on July 12.

Together they were able to play a memory game and tangram puzzles, built cars with magnetic bodies, as well as practised creating 2D geometric layouts and lif ting them into 3D magnetic shapes. They also had the opportunity to build cars with different wheels and inputs for batteries or electric pieces that allowed them to operate with switches and fans. Together the group even attempted building a robot from the ground up.

“It was awesome; if they they had it all summer I would definitely go back,”

said Kalen Garnett.

Participants are already looking forward to the next coding session later this s u m m e r. A n e l e c t r i c session will also take place and children 8-12 can register online. Summer Vegetable Slaw

S u m m e r barbeques season i s h ere. W i t h t h at comes the need for fresh summer salads. This vegetable slaw is my mo d er n take on an old favourite c abbage everlasting salad. I have b e e n wo r k i n g o n a c a b b ag e s l aw recipe that eliminates all the unhealthy vegetable fats that are common to most commercial salad dressings and mayonnaises. After several renditions, this is my favourite. It is such an easy way to eat a lot of healthy vegetables.

Every single ingredient in this salad has multiple health benefits from the vitamins, antioxidants, fibre and flavonoids. If you don’t have apple cider vinegar, you can use regular white vinegar, but the apple cider does have greater benefits. This salad recipe is a keeper.

A University of Otago study in New

Zealand found that the isothiocyanates in cruciferous vegetable such as cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts and cauliflower can even cause cancer cells to destruct. A study in Poland fo u n d t h at wo m e n t h at c o n su m e d 4 ser vings a week of cabbage had significantly lower breast cancer r ate s t han wo m en w h o c o n sum e d only one ser ving a week. Regularly eating raw or lightly steamed cabbage helps lower cholesterol. Cabbage is rich in antioxidants and exhibits antiinflammatory properties in our bodies.

Cabbage juice aids in the healing of stomach ulcers and improves digestive health. While we don’t usually think of cabbage as a source of vitamin C, it is interesting to note that 1 cup of cabbage provides 50 % of the d aily re c o mm en d e d value of v it amin C and 91% of DRV of vitamin K. Amazingly cabbage also has omega 3 in the form of alpha linolenic acid.

While Ver milion is an old enough community now that there are no more pioneers from its earliest era, there was a time when those pioneers still walked its streets.

Isn’t it great to get your hands back into the earth and see the garden growing a g a i n? W h e t h e r you have fields, flower boxes or gardens to tend, it does a heart good to break into the rich brown soil after such a long winter. Of course, getting your hands into the ear th is not so great if a cat has recently squatted there or a dog has deposited some toothsome treat beneath the crust.

We don’t have outside cats, but I know how unpleasant that can be, and as for the dog problem, sit back and let me tell you about it.

As their numbers started to dwindle, the original pioneers of the community decided to hold a get-together to celebrate the pioneer spirit of Vermilion.

O n N ov. 2 , 19 3 7, 16 0 p i o n e e r s gathered together for a banquet and reunion of the Vermilion Old-Timers Association. P.G. Pilkie, who was 88, was made the honorary president of the organization.

For the banquet, speeches were given by the pioneers who had settled in the area during its earliest years and helped build the community over the past two decades.

She looked back at me, tail wagging, the pic ture of inno cence and good humour. I found my trowel and bent to investigate. It didn’t take much effort to reveal the shinbone of a recently deceased cow hidden in a shallow grave amongst the mangled remains of my tulips. Great.

Then, as I was working the dirt in a large tub by the house, my trowel hit upon another obstacle. I’d been trans p lant ing p etunias an d had n’ t bothered with my gloves. Oh, how I wish I had. Fishing about in the soft

“Argh!” I screeched, tossing the flattened remains of a partially chewed gopher high into the air. Double great.

Chili and my brother’s dog Gibson often get in scrapes together. Several times we’ve had to fetch them from one place or another.

This winter, as I was driving my school bus home after work, I glanced toward the house of a new neigh bour in our area. I observed Chili and Gibson frolicking about in the field beside their garage. Drat. Those dogs were up to it again. Angrily I laid on the horn, knowing if Chili saw the bus, she’d run for home.

Honk, honk, honk! I leaned on it loud and long, but the dogs paid not the slightest attention. Instead, they gambled in the snow, bowling one another over and moving onto the front lawn to continue their fun.

Lakeland College Emergency Training Centre Welcomes New Dean

Shawn McKerr y joined Lakeland College Emergency Training Centre on July 4, however he is already quite familiar with the c olleg e. A L ake land alumnus, McKerry is excited to go from a Class of 2006 emergency services technology (EST) graduate to dean of the Emergency Training Centre.

Following graduation, he spent 20 years as a first responder in municipal fire services. McKerry progressively worked his way up in municipal government, serving as a deputy fire chief with Yellowhead County and Parkland County, fire chief with Fort Saskatchewan and most recently chief adminE1 platoon graduating class. istrative officer with Brazeau County.

“We are very excited to have Shawn t r a i n i n g s t u d e n t s – i n c l u d i n g t h e blended (E1) and fully on-site platoons – have been building life-saving skills.

They’ve been putting their education into action with live training in vehicle ex trication, structural firefighting, dangerous goods and industrial scenarios, among others.

The E1 platoon successfully finished their combined blended training on June 17, culminating with their graduation ceremony that same day. The second firefighter training platoon is set to graduate on July 15. In August, another platoon of firefighter training students will begin the comprehensive 12-week on-site program. Students in this program experience the operation

Lakeland ignited McKerry’s passion for higher education. Following his graduation from Lakeland, he obtained an administration degree from Colorado State University, a master’s degree in emergency management from Charles Sturt University, and has now started working on an executive MBA through the University of Fredericton.

“The Emergency Training Centre is a second home for me and although many faces have changed since I was a student, I look forward to ensuring Lakeland continues to offer top-notch and in-demand programming,” says McKerry. “With our EST and firefighter training programs sporting waitlists, it’s clear that the demand for these es sential programs is high. We’re exc ite d to have ever yo ne o n - site,

of a firehall from day one, developing essential leadership skills. The EST program features both a fire and medical stream, and is the only full-time diploma program of its kind in Canada.

As one of the top training facilities in

North America, Lakeland also offers a range of corporate training opportunities, including emergency preparedness, safet y codes and more, to a variety of clients. Seventeen corporate clients are booked for the 2022 season. Munic ipal training is also offered throughout the year.

Prior to opening the training field this spring, several upgrades were completed. A new pump was installed at the pumphouse to support ETC’s self-sufficient water system. A new push-pull ceiling prop was also installed, which will prepare students for the Canadian Physical Ability Test that is required by fire departments.

der s and bunker gear were ad ded to ETC’s supply. As well, new vehicle extrication tools were purchased thanks to funds raised at Feast on the Farm, Lakeland’s annual event that raises funds to create experiences where students can learn, lead and manage.

“In the height of training season, there are countless moving pieces each day that our ETC team expertly handles to provide the highest quality experiential education as possible,” says McKerry. “We’re proud to offer our future and current emergency responders these comprehensive, hands-on opportunities to train.”

In addition to EST and firefighter training, ETC also of fers a bache lor of applied business: emergency services program. Application is open for this par t-time, online program.

Vermilion Tim Horton’s celebrated their annual Camp Day on July 13. Coffee and iced coffee sales as well as bracelets and socks all went to support sending children to camp.

Town Councillor Kevin Martin volunteered to serve customers at the drive thru and cash donations also went to support the special day.

“The youth that participate in camps are able to gain experience and develop their personalities. We’d like to thank everyone for helping the children,” said manager, Rommel Mandocdoc.

The national fundraiser is an exciting day for the company. The Tim Horton Children’s Ranch is located at Kananaskis and offers children the opportunity to try horseback riding, canoeing, archery, climbing, campfires, as well as ecological and wilderness activities. Local NDP-AGM Hosts Alberta Caucus Critic

Submitted O n June 3 0, the Alber ta NDP Constituency Association, Vermili o n - L l oyd m i n s t e r-Wa i n w r i g h t , hosted special guest, MLA Heather Sweet, at their A nnual General Meeting. The meeting was held in the Vermilion Senior Centre to an above average attendance.

Guest speaker, Heather Sweet, elected MLA for Edmonton Manning in 2015 and re-elected in 2019 is currently the Official Opposition House Leader. Heather is a member of Alberta’s NDP Caucus serving as Agriculture and Forestry Critic and Rural Economic Development Critic.

Heather spoke to the audience about her passion for Alber tans and her optimism for where Alberta is headed in the future. She talked a b o u t i n c r e a s e d a n d i m p r ove d child care spaces and how the NDP will address heath care and public education and return to positive partnerships.

Before her time as MLA, Heather spent over a decade as a social worker in child protection services focused on work with at-risk youth.

She is a person that knows something about the desire to create a province that is more progressive, sustainable, and where no one is left behind.

Sheep Club Achievement Day

The Vermilion 4-H Sheep Club’s 47th Annual Achievement Day is just around the corner. It is scheduled to be held in person on July 26 during the Vermilion Fair.

The members are very ecstatic to be able to have a live show and share their hard work with the public.

Throughout the year, members learned how to communicate with each other in different ways, completed workshops in-person on grooming, nutrition, parasite management, pathology etc.

Sixty days before Achievement Day, the members get their market lambs and work their projects caring for them, feeding and training them for the show. A few days before the show the members are busy washing, grooming and working with their project animals.

This preparation helps the member and their project animal practice the skills they

need to be successful and have fun. It also helps them be more prepared to listen to the directions the ring master and judge will ask them, and make it a little less stressful for the members and the animals.

The day provides club members the opportunity to show their market lambs and goats at 2 p.m. at the Vermilion Ag Society Sheep Barn. Final market lamb and goat show classes will be held at 6 p.m. with the sale to follow at 7 p.m. at the same location.

In the market there will be two goats and 12 market lambs on offer.

Achievement Day provides a good opportunity for anyone that is considering joining the Club to go and see what is involved, have the chance to lead a sheep around the ring and to ask questions they may have.

4-H isn’t just for those that have a farm or raise sheep, it is also for those that would like to learn more about them and different skills as well as meet new people.

The Lloydminster Exhibition Fair A Huge Success

Fair goers swamped the Lloydminster Exhibition grounds from July 13 -16 as the Association held its Fair after a two year hiatus due to COVID. Attendees were full of excitement to finally be able to take in the parade, West Coast Amusements midway, pet ting zoo, livesto c k shows, kids zone, dog shows and livestock shows, tradeshow, live enter tainment and concerts at the grand stand, as well as the North American Chuckwagon Championships. The four day event boasted over 150 activities and entertainment, and new this year was the Running with the Bulls event on Saturday, where participants had the opportunity to show off their braver y and have a chance to grab up the $1500 prize and of course bragging rights.

The much anticipated parade started at 10 a.m. on Wednesday and travelled throughout the downtown streets. It brought smiles and cheers no matter the age. Throughout the four days attendees could attend a variety of activities such as the Old Timer’s Log Cabin Activities, Create it – Home Arts & Crafts Displays, Country Lane – Agricultural Displays and Activities, the Indoor and Outdoor Trade Show, BABS Gaming, Midway Rides, the Alberta Petting Zoo and the Kids Fun Tent, etc.

West Coast Amusements rides were also a hit as line-ups were filled with ride goers who enjoyed the excitement of the twists, turns and swirls of the many rides available. If rides were not the attendees forte they could attend the unbelievable number of events such as, Trick Riding Competitions,

Hitch Driving Classes, Extreme Dogs, the NACC Chuckwagon Races, Multi Breed Draft Horse Halter Show, Gelding Halter Classes that were followed by the Best of Show Supreme Champions and Junior Decorating and Showmanship Classes. The list of events available just kept on going with the Gymkhana, Team Roping, Draft Horse Pull, Team Sorting, and Rusty Bexon Memorial Open 6 Horse Hitch, Open Four (8), Open Team (8), Ladies Cart, and Champion Presentations, etc.
