11 a.m. Also on Friday, there was a farmers market, Pysanka writing and Dough Dove making. The opening ceremonies were held at 2 p.m., throughout the day attendees could watch the Mazur Polish Dancers, Chaika Concert Ensemble, Marango Pie (band showcase) and the Grandstand show. There was a sunflower painting workshop, and a craft corner, etc. At 9 p.m. the evening Zabava was held.

On Saturday, attendees could attend many of the same demonstrations, the Yarmarok marketplace, the Thistle Hill Petting Farm, craft corner, workshops, and beer gardens. They could watch the

The Vegreville Cultural Association held its 49th Annual Pysanka Festival from July 1 to July 3.

This family-friendly event had free admission except for the Grandstand shows and the evening Zabava.

The three day event had a variety of dance competitions, Cultural Showcases, Authentic Ukrainian food, a marketplace and much more.

On Friday, the Pioneer Village D e m o n s t r a t i o n s , Ya r m a r o k marketplace and Artist market as well as the beer gardens opened at

Vinok Orchestra, Boyan Dancers, Calgary Tryzub Dancers, Peace River Muzyka Dancers, Stonewall Manitoba Dancers, Polka Ramblers and Travis Dolter and more.

The final day the Ukrainian Dance Competitions started at 9 a.m. at the Multiplex. The Pioneer Villag e, Fo lk Ar t s, Yar m aro k Marketplace and Artists Market opened at 10 a.m. along with the Thistle Hill Petting Farm and Farmers market. The beer gardens, Sunflower Painting Workshop, craft corner, Flailing at Pioneer Village all began at 11 a.m. as well as the Korali workshops. The Grandstand Show began at 2 p.m. Dancers.

Burnt Rock Adventure Co. Holds Demo Day

Owners Toland Cochrane and Aaron Hayman were busy set ting up and holding a paddle sports demo day at the boat docks in the Vermilion Provincial Park on Saturday, July 9, under the utmost beautiful sunny skies and perfectly warm weather conditions.

The purpose of the demo was to provide potential customers the opportunity to try out some of the canoes, kayaks and paddle boards the store carries before buying.

“All of the paddle sport products are different and they handle differently so doing a day like today gives people the opportunity to try out the different products we carr y before buying to see which they feel more comfortable using,” explained Cochrane.

Some of the products available to try were hardshell kayaks and canoes

from O ld Town Canoe whic h have been shaping adventures since 1898.

These canoes and kayaks can be used for fishing and hunting or just enjoying a day paddling on the open water.

The Old Town Kayaks and Canoes are recognized as the world’s most advanced recreational kayaks that feature a redesigned hull for better glide and tracking.

Edgerton Sports Day and Fair

The Edgerton Sports Association held its annual Sports Day and Fair from July 8-10 which featured the PBR Canada Bullarama on Friday, July 8 as well as wild pony races. There was a beef on the bun supper and a 50/50 draw. Attendees were wowed by the fireworks at dusk that were sponsored

by Benoit Oilfield Construction.

Saturday was an action-packed day for the whole family with a pancake breakfast and parade, fair exhibits, antique tractor pulls and slow races, a petting zoo, a kids carnival, a livestock show, barrel racing and pole bending jackpot followed by a steak supper from

4-6 p.m. at the Edgerton Fire Hall and the chuck wagons and chariots at 7 p.m.

There was also a sports tournament on Saturday and Sunday where participants enjoyed playing Men’s Fastball and Mixed Slow pitch.

Sunday wasn’t a disappointment either as the day started off with another pancake breakfast, a community church service, another round of barrel racing and pole bending jackpot, antique tractor pulls, slow races, and chuck wagons and chariots and the fair exhibits with trophies and awards presented. The children had an opportunity to search Children enjoying the the money pit all weekend long, and Wild Pony races. Photo the adults could enjoy a three-day beer Laurie Jensen Jackson garden.

Isabelle thoroughly enjoyed her first visit to the Vermilion Spray Park located in the Vermilion Provincial Park on July 9.

R e c e nt l y I h ave shared with you my amazing recipe for naked egg rolls and fried rice. This week the meal is finished with a vegetable stir fry that tastes so amazing. Vegetables are filled with so many phyto nutrients.

As we all know these nutrients hold the keys to health. The packs of frozen mixed Asian vegetable make it so easy to make this Vegetable Stir Fry. Of course, if you have time you can use fresh, and cut them up instead of using frozen. Studies have shown that frozen vegetables are picked in their prime, and quickly frozen, so they often are superior in nutrition to the fresh counterparts in the grocery stores. If you are using fresh vegetables then consider broccoli, cauliflower, orien-

tal flat peas, bok choy, red pepper and thinly sliced carrots. Canned baby corn can be drained and added. You will want 6 -7 cups of vegetables.

Broccoli, a common vegetable in stir fries is a nutrient powerhouse, with a 1/2 cup providing your daily need for vitamins C and K as well as significant amounts of Vitamin A and at least 18 other vitamins and minerals. Broccoli has antioxidant abilities, anti-inflammator y proper ties, and unique cell detoxification abilities. Studies have shown broccoli to decrease cholesterol, inhibit the overgrowth of Helicobacter pylori (bad bacterium) in the stomach and aid in cancer prevention.

A 1/2 cup serving of broccoli has only 22 calories and provides many health benefits. If you decide to serve cooked broccoli it is best steamed or cooked for less than 5 minutes to retain the maximum number of nutritional benefits.

Carrots are an excellent source of vitamin A, which benefits your eyes and lungs. Onions are a great source of the nutrient quercetin, and the good news is that cooked onions retain this beneficial nutrient, undamaged by the heat, plus cooked onions are easier on the breath than raw onions. Quercetin is a flavonoid that may inhibit the growth of certain cancers. Quercetin has been shown to lower bad cholesterol, raise good cholesterol and be protective of the cardio-vascular system. Onions are a natural source of both quercetin and chromium, which both assist in blood sugar control. Onions and garlic contain sulfur compounds that work to detox our bodies by binding to heavy metals such as lead, mercur y and cadmium and then escorting them out of the body. Ever y single vegetable has a great story to tell for your body.

Vegetable Stir Fry 1 tablespoon olive oil

1 onion chopped in medium or large pieces 3 cloves garlic minced 1 tablespoon chopped ginger (optional) 500 grams frozen stir fry vegetables 1 can of sliced mushrooms – save water 1/2 cup mushroom water or chicken broth 1 tablespoon cornstarch 1 tablespoon brown sugar (optional) 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1 teaspoon sesame oil (optional_ A sprinkle of sesame seed (optional) S a l u te o n i o n, g ar l i c a n d g i n g er slightly in oil. Add in the vegetables and drained mushrooms and cover, stirring frequently until almost cooked.

In a small bowl mix the mushroom water, soy sauce, cornstarch. Pour this mixture into the hot vegetables and stir until thickened. Finish with the sesame oil.

Some Highly Experimental Gas Alternatives

Recently gas prices have been soaring and many people are wondering just how high they will go. It isn’t clear just yet how much more pain will come from raising gas prices but there are a few inventors who have created a workaround. Many strange vehicles have been made with some of the most wild ideas imaginable.

All of these new machines were created with the purpose of replacing gas as a fuel source. Although these ideas will never amount to anything, it is interesting to take a look at some of the bizarre

creations people have come up with.

The first vehicle made by British inventor Harold Bate and was one of the most unique, yet questionable vehicles. His automobile was powered using chicken poop. By processing methane gas from rotted chicken manure and feeding it to the engine through a special device he invented, the inventor was able to drive his 1953 Hillman at speeds up to 75 mph. without the use of gasoline.

The second strange automobile was created back in 1939 by an inventor by the name of Z. Wiggs. This inventor had the idea to make a vehicle powered by his dog.

The device featured a large turning wheel allowing the dog to run on a treadmill type of device and generate the power needed

to move the entire wheeled machine. With the given name of “The Poochmobile” this is one device that really does deserve to go mainstream.

Another strange vehicle that briefly had its try at taking the spotlight was Chrysler’s Tequila and perfume powered turbine car.

This vehicle was a highly experimental piece of machinery that was briefly used by the President of Mexico. While running a car on tequila and perfume doesn’t exactly sound like an improvement over gas it will likely be a cheaper option if gas continues rising the way it has been.

One startup company in California made a vehicle powered by Magnets and compressed air. This unique machine unnecessarily did away with the tradi-

The design of this one is something akin to an electric car but instead of lithium batteries its compressed air turning a turbine.

The final vehicle was made by Toyota.

This car can be fuelled by the chemicals found in garbage. While you may be thinking it’s akin to the delorean from back to the future you would be misled.

This vehicle quite anticlimactically is actually powered by hydrogen, and while Toyota has said that the vehicle could be powered by hydrogen extracted from garbage, it really hasn’t been yet.

Stood in the sun too long? Drank a tumbler of outdated fruit juice? Was he hoping to have his head snapped off?

My eyes narrowed. “I am not now, nor am I in the foreseeable future preparing a bowl of macaroni salad,” I said bitterly. “Delicious or otherwise.”

Sure, I might have scorched the nuts, forgot to add the egg whites until I slid the cake into the oven, and then set fire to a tea towel as I hastily snatched the pan back out. And I did trip over the cat and slop a portion of the batter onto the floor as I hurriedly slapped the whites back in, but other than that, I think it turned out quite well. Or not.

Actually, for dif ferent reasons, I doubt I’ll ever be asked to make walnut cake or macaroni salad again.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING Off-Site Levy Bylaw

In accordance with the Municipal Government Act and amendments thereafter the Council of the Town of Vermilion will hold a Public Hearing in consideration of passing Bylaw 5-2022 to establish an off-site levy for land that is to be subdivided or developed within the Town of Vermilion. Off-site levies collected from developers are used to facilitate growth of the community by providing harmonized off-site levy rates for roads, water, sanitary, and stormwater infrastructure that are fair and equitable and comply with legislative and regulatory requirements.

Please take notice that on Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at 6:15 p.m. a Public Hearing will be held at the Town of Vermilion Town Hall located at 5021 - 49th Avenue to hear from anyone who feels they may be affected by the proposed Off-Site Levy Bylaw 5-2022.

A copy of the relevant documents is available on the website or may be examined at the Town Hall at any time during regular business hours. Anyone wishing to be heard either directly or on someone else's behalf may make oral representation at the public hearing. Written submissions are acceptable and must be delivered to the to the Town Hall address indicated above prior to July 15, 2022. At the Public Hearing, the Mayor shall direct to hear representation from those property owners directly affected together with any other person who wishes to make representation.

Any person who is directly affected by a bylaw imposing a levy for facilities may submit a notice of appeal to the Municipal Government Board not later than 30 days after the bylaw imposing the levy has been passed.

Choosing The Correct Car Seat For Your Child

In Alberta, all children under six years of age or weighing less than 18 kilograms (40 pounds) must be secured in an appropriate child safety seat that is properly installed in the vehicle.

Proper use of a child safety seat has been shown to reduce the likelihood of a child being injured or killed in a motor vehicle accident by as much as 75 per cent.

Choosing the correct type of child safety seat is an important step in ensur-

ing your child is safe.

Rear-facing car seats A child is safest in a rear-facing car seat until they are at least two years old, or when they reach the maximum weight or height limit for a rear-facing seat (as stated by the manufacturer).

Rear-facing car seats with higher weight and height limits are preferred.

They keep a child in the safer, rear-facing position beyond age two.

Don’t rush to put your child in a forwardfacing seat. The rear-facing position is the safest.

Forward-facing car seats A child who is at least two years old or has reached the maximum weight or height limit of the rear-facing seat (as stated by the manufacturer) may ride in a forward-facing car seat.

A child must use a forward-facing car seat until they reach the seat’s maximum weight or height limit (as stated by the manufacturer). Some forward-facing seats may be used with the five-point harness for children up to 30 kg (65 lb).

Booster seats An adult seat belt alone does not properly fit a child’s body because it sits too high on a child’s belly and neck. This can cause serious injuries in a crash. A booster seat helps the seat belt safely fit a child’s body.

Once a child has reached the maximum forward-facing weight or height limit

of their car seat (as stated by the manufacturer), they can move into a booster seat.

A child is safest in a booster seat until they reach the seat’s maximum weight or height limit (as stated by the manufacturer).

Vermilion Roar Lacrosse U16 Wins Silver

The Vermilion Roar Lacrosse U10 and U16 headed to Cold Lake from July 8 to 10 for the Minor Box Lacrosse Provincial Championships. The tournaments were hosted at the Col J.J. Parr Sports Centre, the Cold Lake Energy Centre and the Cold Lake North Arena.

Opening ceremonies commenced Friday evening at the Imperial Oil Place in the Energy Centre to kick off the tournament.

The Vermilion Roar U10 had their first game of the tournament on July 8 at 12:30 p.m. where they battled it out against the Bonnyville Heat where they were the victor ending the game with a score of 10-4. They played again on Saturday against the North Central Wolves at 9 a.m. with a final score of 7-5. For their game against the Sherwood Park Titans,

the Vermilion Roar were defeated with a score of 7-0.

The U16’s had a great run at the tournament as they battled for the top Championship. On Friday they played against the Bonnyville Heat where they lost with a final score of 8-7. On Saturday the battle continued when they faced off against the Grand Prairie Thrashers and managed to squeak in a victory with the final score being 8-6, they then went on to play the Flagstaff Fusions and whooped them with a score of 13-3.

The U16 Vermilion Roar went into Photos submitted the championships where they played against the Brooks Drillers where they came out with a silver medal.

“The kids all played great, and we are very proud of each and every one of them, especially after just coming back after two years of COVID,” commented President Ryan Adams.

In Loving Memory Phyllis Pratt (By Daughter Cindy Martin, with the help of my three sisters) January 10, 2022 was a very sad day for us as we said goodbye to our dear mother. After a long battle with heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory failure, Mom passed away at the Vermilion Hospital at the age of 87.

Mom was born and raised in Surrey, England on September 9, 1934, the fourth daughter of nine born to Harold and Phoebe Fagence.

In April of 1950, she married the love of her life, Alfred Pratt, (aka, Dad), and in September 1951, first daughter, Linda was born. In September 1954, came Caroline. In 1957, Mom, Dad, and their two little girls came to Canada by boat. After numerous moves throughout Alberta and BC, in July 1960, Rosemarie was born, and in January 1964, I completed the family. “The fourth daughter of a fourth daughter.” Mom used to say. She told me when I had four daughters, it would then be four generations of fourth daughters. I assured her I was not having four kids! It was always a big joke for us!

We returned to England in 1964 till 1967. Although Dad was born in England, he was raised near Islay, which would become our home for most of my upbringing. Mom and Dad welcomed their first grandchild, Jason, in September 1970 . Finally, a boy! Six more grandchildren would follow over the next twenty years.

Mom’s life was not without hardships. In January 1964, only three weeks after I was born, Mom was held hostage in the wee hours of the morning at the hands of a knife-wielding fugitive in Courtney, BC. John Hopton Twist broke out of prison, and after stealing a taxi, beating an Innkeepers wife almost to death, and burning down a house after stealing food, he knocked on Mom’s door at 4am. She assumed it was Dad coming home after being away working for two weeks. When she opened the door, he pushed his way in, shoved her into the refrigerator, knocked her to the floor, and held a seven inch dagger to her throat! She hurt her back on the refrigerator door handle, which made her mad, and she knocked the knife out of his hand! At 5’ 2”, she was a force to be reckoned with! She had to protect her children! Over the next few hours, she kept him busy with conversation and dad’s stash of beer in the fridge. She calmly got her two oldest up for school. Mom then told him she went to her neighbours every morning for coffee and if she didn’t show, her neighbour would come here. He simply got up and left. She ran to the nearest house (over half a mile away) and called police. Dad came home later that day and told her he heard of a woman and her children being held hostage, and she told him, “Ya, you’re looking at her!”

We didn’t have much money. I can remember many times while living in Islay, Mom would rummage through the couch, pulling up the cushions, looking for that one extra penny for a loaf of bread. She eventually got a drivers licence and was able to take on jobs in Lloyd and Vermilion.

Mom worked very hard to make ends meet, cleaning motel rooms or at home running the household. Dad had many health issues and could no longer work. At times, we simply did without, but thanks to Dad’s love of gardening, we always had food.

Mom missed her family back in England dearly. There were many times she felt very alone in Canada, in spite of having us here. In 1977, she got the opportunity to go back and visit them. It was the trip that sparked many more over the next 40 years and one she spoke fondly of until her death.

Mom looked very much like the Queen. We used to tease her that they were switched at birth, and our real mother was the Queen of England, that we were Royalty! (This, in spite of the fact that the Queen is about 9 years older than Mom!) She loved it anyway!

Mom loved Saturdays when I would do her hair. Friends and family would then join us for cards, or a barbeque and horseshoes. It was a sort of weekly thing for us and she truly looked forward to it.

She also loved family gatherings. Her children and grandchildren meant everything to her. I recently came across a letter that she wrote which stated, “I am blessed with four good daughters.” Thank you, Mom! Thanks to Rosemarie, Mom never spent one day in a nursing home.

She was a good mother, and a dedicated wife. We will remember her with love and appreciation, respect and admiration. After 54 years of marriage, she is once again with Dad. We always said she was just trying to catch up to him, as he died also at the age of 87, 18 years ago.

Mom, we say goodbye with heartache and great sadness. We will miss you and love you both forever.

Alberta Blue Cross® Shares Essential Summer Safety Tips

Beat the heat and plan to be prepared for any situation this summer.

For two summers, the COVID-19 pandemic impacted vacation plans for many Albertans. Now, opportunities to travel, participate in large social gatherings, and attend festivals and outdoor concerts have finally returned and Alberta Blue Cross is sharing tips to help Albertans safely enjoy their summer.

As a partner in Alberta’s preventable injury campaign and a champion for wellness, Alberta Blue Cross encourages Albertans to have a safe and active summer.

1. Stay cool and hydrated.

Sunshine and high temperatures increase your risk of sunstroke and heat exhaustion—both can be life-threatening for infants, young children and seniors.

To avoid this, stay hydrated by drinking lots of water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated drinks. Increase your vitamin C intake—it provides a natural defense against heat stroke, exhaustion and heat rash. Make sure to stay cool by wearing light-coloured clothing and seeking shade often. Never leave children or pets inside a parked vehicle.

Additional tips to beat the heat, especially during heat waves and for those who don’t have air conditioning, include the following: • Open doors and windows and use fans to promote air circulation throughout your home.

• Keep blinds closed.

• Seek refuge in a cooler basement if you have one.

• Avoid large meals, use an outdoor grill and eat fresh foods that don’t require you to use the oven or stove to prepare.

• Eliminate extra heat sources—don’t leave computers or appliances running and avoid using incandescent light bulbs.

• Take cold showers or baths, soak your hands and feet in buckets or bowls of cold water, place ice packs or wet towels on your pulse points (inside of wrists, back of the neck and behind the knees). Or use a spray bottle filled with cold water to spritz yourself.

• Visit public buildings with air conditioning, like libraries, art galleries, movie theatres, museums and shopping malls.

• Place your pillowcases or blankets in a bag and pop them in the freezer for a few minutes before going to sleep.

2. Practice sun safety.

Avoid sunburns by using a broadspectrum sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30. Generously apply it 20 minutes before going outside and reapply frequently. Don’t forget about your face and eyes—protect them by wearing a hat and sunglasses with an ultraviolet (UV) A/B certified

seal. With kids being more sensitive to sunlight, it’s important they’re protected when outside for even short periods.

3. Be safe in and on the water.

No one plans to drown, but dozens of individuals die in water-related accidents each year. According to the 2021 20-Year Drowning Analysis of Alberta, an average of 30 Albertans drown per year—the most likely to drown are males and those aged 20 to 29. Most drownings occur from May to September in lakes, ponds and rivers—even as a good swimmer, you’re at risk of drowning if you fall out of a boat or are in an accident. When visiting bodies of water, make sure you and your family are equipped with life jackets that are properly fitted to each individual and approved by Transport Canada.

Children can drown in as little as one inch of water, so never leave them unsupervised in or near water.

4. Avoid pesky bug bites.

While the risk of getting a serious disease from a bug bite in Alberta is low, it’s important to be aware of the risks and how you can prevent them. Cover up with light-coloured clothing, which is less attractive to mosquitoes and allows you to see ticks easily. Wear insect repellent but apply sunscreen first. After being outside, check yourself, your children and pets for any ticks or bug bites. If you find a bug bite, follow proper instructions on how to treat it quickly to reduce the chance of infection or disease. You can find treatment instructions at MyHealth.

5. Play safe.

Make sure backyard and playground equipment is properly secured to the ground and teach children how to play safely. Be especially careful around recreational trampolines, which are an increasing cause of injuries among children—and ensure all trampolines contain a safety net enclosure and that any use is closely supervised. Always supervise children playing outdoors if they’re under the age of 12—be attentive and close enough to act if needed.

6. Wear a helmet.

To protect yourself from injury, it’s important to wear a helmet when on a bicycle, skateboard, scooter, rollerblades or when operating a motorized off-road vehicle. Alberta laws require helmets be worn by anyone operating a motorcycle or an off-highway vehicle, such as an AllTerrain Vehicle (ATV). Albertans under the age of 18 are also required to wear a helmet when cycling. Make sure your helmet fits properly—it should be snug, level front-to-back, sit an inch above your eyebrows and allow for two fingers to fit between your chin and the strap.

7. Keep your pets safe.

Always provide pets with access to clean, fresh water and shade for protection from the heat and sun. Exercise pets in the early morning or late evening to avoid the midday heat. On hot days, keep them off pavement to protect their feet. During heat waves, you can help keep your pet’s body temperature down with cool baths or showers, cooling vests and wraps or outdoor hoses, sprinklers and pools. Never leave pets inside a parked vehicle, even for a short time. The temperature inside a vehicle can quickly rise to dangerous levels and cause a pet to suffer heatstroke, irreparable organ damage and even death. Keep your pets up to date on their medications to avoid health complications and diseases that can be transmitted through fleas, ticks, mosquitos and other bugs.

8. Camp safely.

Plan to be prepared for any situation when camping. Bring a map of the area and make sure someone knows where you’re headed, especially if there’s no cellphone service. Bring clothing for all types of weather and always pack an emergency kit with a flashlight, a radio, extra batteries and medical supplies.

Avoid attracting bears to your campsite by keeping food, garbage and recyclables inside a vehicle, hard-sided trailer or bear-proof container. In the event of severe weather, seek shelter in a building or metal-roofed vehicle—never stay in your tent. Prior to your trip, check the Alberta Parks website for the most up-todate information on camping regulations.

9. Keep food fresh.

Prepare and handle foods safely to reduce the risk of food-borne illness, especially when barbequing or going outdoors. Wash your hands thoroughly before and after handling food. Use hand sanitizer if you’re camping or on a picnic. Keep food between 4 and 6°C to prevent growth of harmful bacteria. Discard any cooked food that has been at room temperature for more than two hours—when in doubt, throw it out!

10. Respect nature.

Always give any wildlife you encounter plenty of space, and never feed them directly or indirectly by leaving unattended food or garbage for them to find. Once an animal has tasted human food, it may seek it out and endanger itself or other humans. Always dispose of waste properly— litter is not only unappealing, but it also poses a danger to the wildlife and can destroy

habitats over time. Follow all park rules and respect signs posted in wild areas, including trail closures. When driving in parks and forests, obey speed limits and keep an eye out for animals. If you see wildlife along the road, slow down, stay in your vehicle and move on. Only stop if wildlife is crossing your path. Stopping on roads to observe wildlife puts yourself, wildlife and other motorists at risk.

11. Keep an eye on the sky.

Summer weather conditions in Alberta can change fast. Severe weather like heavy winds, hailstorms or tornadoes can be life-threatening. Before you head out, be sure to check the weather forecast. While outside, keep an eye on the sky, keep a radio or your mobile phone nearby to be aware of any weather advisories, and have a plan to find shelter should a storm arise.

12. Protect your home.

To decrease the possibility of someone breaking into your home while you’re away on vacation or even just for the day, follow some simple tips. If you’re going to mention your trip on social media, make sure your profile and status updates are set to private. While away, avoid geotagging pictures or adding the location to public status and story updates. Have friends or neighbours check in on your home to bring in mail and packages or identify any leaks or hazards that could become bigger problems—as a bonus, their visits will make potential criminals think your house is occupied. Before leaving your home, even just for the day, check that all doors locked, and windows are shut or not accessible from the outside.

The History Of Independent Retailer Month

Submitted July is Independent Retailer Month, an event that encourages people to visit their local shops and markets and support their community’s business sector. After all, small businesses are the backbone of the economy.

How it started Independent Retailer Week was created in 20 03 by Tom Shay, the founder of Profits Plus, a web-based

company providing support to small businesses. With this event, he sought to educate small business owners on the importance of engaging with their communities and customers.

Six years later, Kerry Bannigan, a co-founder of Nolcha, launched her own version of Independent Retailer Week.

This time, the campaign targeted New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia and New Jersey. The event focused on

independent fashion retailers and was a tremendous success.

I n 2 0 11, S h a y a n d B a n n i g a n discussed creating a new, more inclusive event that celebrated and raised awareness of the importance of independent retailers of all kinds. Welcome Back To The Feast On The Farm

Lakeland College’s Feast on the Farm returns this August.

“Feast on the Farm is one of our most enjoyable events,” says Dr. Alice Wainwright-Stewart, president and CEO of Lakeland College. “I’m so glad we are able to welcome guests to join us in celebrating and supporting student success.”

After a two-year hiatus, Feast on the Farm will be held on Thursday, Aug. 18 at the Research Centre, located on the Vermilion campus and the event will be held outdoors in a large tent. Greg Shannon, CFCW radio and Lakeland Class of 1987 alumnus will host the event.

This will be the fifth time Lakeland has hosted the event, which features a grassroots dining experience, musical performance and more. It’s an opportunity to connect with industry leaders, alumni and friends of the college while raising funds for Lakeland’s distinct educational model.

Funds raised at the event support Lakeland’s experiential learning model, providing educational experiences that go beyond the classroom.

Third Annual Alberta Open Farm Day At Chatsworth Farm

Open Farm Days at Chatsworth Farm has become an annual event for the Wasylik family and their farm, this year featuring returning favourites and new additions including an expanded farmers market, BBQ lunch throughout the day, new hands-on farm activities, and new displays. The Wasylik family farms 15 minutes northwest of Vermilion, and are looking forward to hosting the event again this summer, on Saturday, August 13th.

Open Farm Days presented by Servus Credit Union is celebrating its 10th anniversary this summer and is a collaborative, province-wide event that gives everyone the opportunity to experience farms and agricultural operations where they can learn more about the farms and farmers who grow and raise their food, and have some farm fun.

Open Farm Days at Chatsworth Farm will include guided tours of the family farm with the animals, including beef cattle, sheep, chickens, geese, ducks, and turkeys, plus farm kittens and the family’s livestock guardian dog, Lizzie, and herding puppy-in-training, Chief. This year’s farmers market will include Berry View Farms, Chatsworth Farm, Copper Cork Distillery, Fraiche Flower Farm, Old School Cheesery, Pottery by Dellaney, and Wilds Acre.

Everyone is welcome to attend, with the event wheelchair accessible with transportation on the farm provided for those in need. “We love to see that so many people are interested in learning about locally grown and produced food and seeing the behind-the-scenes of how it gets from our farm to their fork. Lots of Albertans have roots on the farm or want to learn more, so this gives them the chance to rediscover and explore those connections,” says Charlotte Wasylik.

Open Farm Days is a free event, with registration required again this year, so don’t delay. Spaces booked up very quickly last year.

What Does It Cost (And Save) To Set Up A Livestock Water System?

What if cattle producers could adopt a single practice that would improve livestock production, help conserve water and improve the environment?

Developing an off-site or remote water system may achieve that.

Wa t e r i s a n e s s e n t i a l n u t r i e n t for c at tle, ac counting for bet ween 50 and 80 per cent of an animal’s l i ve w e i g h t . F o r o p t i m u m h e a l t h , cattle need a consistent source and adequate supply of water each d ay. Ac c es s to fresh, c lean water increases animals’ water intake, which in turn, increases their feed intake and improves animal per formance.

On top of potential production benefits, producers often report improved animal health from reduced bacterial consumption. In addition, there are less instances of mastitis and foot rot when animals are not regularly standing in water.

When designing a livestock water system, economic analysis and projections are helpful. The BCRC’s updated Water Systems Calculator is a useful tool for comparing costs and benefits of different livestock water systems and calculating how much time it will take to pay off the system.

To provide cattle with a safe, reliable supply of good qualit y water, many producer s are using remote water systems. According to the Farm M anag ement Sur vey 2017, 5 4 per cent of beef cattle operations where livestock had limited or no access to surface water used remote or offsite water systems.

The economics of water systems depend on initial costs, capacity, herd size and cattle prices. The updated calculator allows greater flexibility to reflect different situations and allows producers to: - use their own herd size and adjust cattle daily water consumption to calculate daily water requirement.

- change the infrastructure setting (e.g., number of wells, troughs and stock tanks).

- choose to use the default prices or enter their own prices for different parts of the water system.

- use their projected sale price for the cattle being watered to estimate the potential economic benefit from additional weight gain.

In different regions, there are also financial assistance programs available for developing a livestock water system. Some examples are: - Canadian Agricultural Partnership - Farm and Ranch Water Infrastructure Program - Ag Action Manitoba Program PR O D U CERS ’ TIPS FO R LIVESTOCK WATER SYSTEMS: - If watering pairs, ensure the trough is low enough for calves to access.

- Use of insulated tanks helps to keep water from freezing during cold weather.

- When using a solar pump system, arrange the angle of your solar panels to capture the most sunlight possible.

This needs to be adjusted according to winter or summer use.

- Place your trough in a location where the topography naturally slopes away from the dugout. This prevents manure from draining back into the source.

- When pumping water from a dugout or dam, cattle should have emergency ac c e s s to t h e water s o ur c e i f t h e system fails.

With a well-designed water system,

producers can benefit from improved cattle productivity, sustain their valuable water resources and, at the same time, do their part to protect water and contribute to a more environmentally friendly cattle industry.

To select a water system that best fits the operation’s economic and environmental goals, producers need to give careful thought to matching herd water requirements with grazing management and site conditions. Experience and insights from other producers, especially those with similar produc-

tion systems, management practices or site conditions, can provide valuable information for new adopters.
