After 2 years of hiatus, the Wainwright Stampede was underway this past weekend. It is in the top 5 largest Pro Rodeos in Canada.

There were many pancake breakfasts held throughout the town during Stampede week.

Thursday, the Agricultural Fair took place in the afternoon and the Chamber Stampede held its Kick Off Party from 4 to 9 p.m.

On Friday, the weather cooperated with only a light rain for a short time while the CPCA Chuckwagon Races kicked off the evening events, followed by the Rodeo and new this year was the Ladies Breakaway Roping. Also, the

wild pony races were a popular event as always.

Friday evening a young steer rider was injured and paramedics were on hand to attend to him.

The sun came out for the rest of the weekend and families came down to take in the parade on Saturday with the theme, ‘Salute to Healthcare Professionals’, and the Rodeo was held at 1 p.m. with the Chuckwagon Races again at 5 p.m. then the Rodeo Under the Lights at 9 p.m.

Saturday evening featured Donny Lee at the Stampede Cabaret.

The final day, Sunday had the Chuckwagon races in the afternoon with the Rodeo Battle for the Buckles closing out the 2022 Wainwright Stampede.

Dewberry Chuckwagon Races And Dewberry Ag Society 50th Anniversary

Society also celebrated their 50th anniversary. A pancake breakfast kicked off the day at the Dewberry Fire Hall. The breakfast was followed by the ‘Spirit of Country’ parade, which lead the way for a variety of activities throughout the day including cake, a bouncy house,

The Dewberry Chuckwagon Racing Heritage Society once again presented the Dewberry Chuckwagon Races featuring the World Professional Chuckwagon Association drivers from June 24-26 at the Dewberry Spor ts Ground. On June 22 a BBQ with a Driver Meet and Greet was held at the Dewberr y Co-op which provided attendees the opportunity to get autographs from their favourite driver.

Due to heav y rain that began Thursday evening and continued into Friday the first night of the chuck wagon races had to be cancelled.

another BBQ, an indoor market, and ball hockey at the Dewberry arena from 1 to 3 p.m. Main Street Fun was also available, such as a garage sale, a toy tractor race, face painting, music and entertainment, bicycle decorating and pie and ice cream from 1 to 4 p.m. If

those activities didn’t suit, attendees had the opportunity to participate in a Dewberry Heritage scavenger hunt from 2 to 4 p.m.

At 7 p.m. the infamous chuckwagon races began which had the crowds cheering for their favourite outfit, and another street dance was held at 9 p.m.

Sunday was the day of championship races where drivers raced around the track at top speed to see who would grab the Champion Sunday $25,0 0 0 Dash for Cash.

The final heat lineup featured Evan Salmond, Vern Nolan (3rd place) and Kris Molle (2nd place).

This is Salmond’s third career win and his first win at the Dewberry Championship.

Get Ready, Get Set, Plan Your Float

The 116th Annual Vermilion Fair is just a month away, which means the parade is also on its way, so put on your thinking caps and enter a float in this year’s parade!! The theme for the Fair is ‘MOOving Forward’ and that theme could resonate with the parade. Everyone is encouraged to incorporate the theme into their floats for the parade and loud music.

“This year’s theme is about moving forward. We want to put the last couple of years behind us and we are excited to be ‘MOOving Forward and having the Fair in all its glory this year,” commented Vermilion Ag Society office manager, Nicole Templeton.

The categories for this year’s judging include Commercial, Out-of-Town, Senior Organization, Junior Organization, Comic, Decorated Car, Decorated Bikes, Antiques, and Decorated Pony. There will be first, second, and third place ribbons handed out depending on the number of entries in each

category.

There is no registration fee or pre-registration for the parade and floats should be set up by 9:30 a.m. on July 28 at the marshalling area for judging and placement within the parade. The marshalling area is located at the Lakeland Mall parking lot and judging begins at 10 a.m.

The parade starts at 11 a.m. sharp and the route as in previous years will begin at Lakeland Mall go along Railway Avenue turning right at 49 Street, then left at 50 Avenue where it will continue until 51 Street where it will turn south, returning to Railway Avenue. It will continue on this path, merging with 50 Avenue and ending near the Vermilion Health Care Centre.

Linda Elsenheimer Retires From Co-op

Linda Elsenheimer has been with Co-op for the last 30 years and has seen many changes during that time.

“I have worked for Co-op since 1991, during that time I have seen East-Alta Co-op change to Cornerstone Co-op.

I remember when the original Co-op grocery store was where the Hardware store was. I then saw the hardware store go and then the second Co-op grocery store go and the new Cornerstone Co-op store built where it is today,” commented Elsenheimer.

During her 30 years at Co-op Linda had advanced from cashier to head

cashier and then to her current position of a cash office clerk.

“I have also completed unofficial jobs as a problem solver to go-to-girl,” chuckled Linda.

Elsenheimers’ favourite par ts of being with Co-op over the years were the customers and she stated that, “seeing so many people come and go is quite mind-boggling. I have enjoyed doing everything I could to make their shopping experience a good one.”

Linda also joked about how a customer asked her “What the heck are you going to do with all those Co-op numbers you have in your head? She commented that the old saying ‘if you

don’t use it, you lose it’ will be a true statement.

Upon her retirement Elsenheimer stated that she is looking forward to travelling, spending more time with family and friends and other hobbies that she enjoys.

“I love gardening so that is something I will definitely be spending time at,” commented Linda.

As of June 30, Elsenheimer will be retiring from Cornerstone Co-op and says the things she will miss the most are the customers and the great team at Cornerstone Co-op. Linda would like to thank everyone for humouring her over the last 30 years.

Assistant store manager Mamie Caira also commented on Linda’s ability to remember customers Co-op numbers, in some cases better than they knew it themselves, and said that Linda was always very helpful and accommodating to fill in when team members were sick and that she worked the till and anything else that was needed.

“Linda is a keystone of the front end, she has so much knowledge of the processes and people, and that won’t be easy to replace,” said Caira. Caira also said, “Linda has always represented the Co-op brand by being genuine and modest, working behind the scenes to make everyone else look good.”

ABBA tunes blared, and singing along, I effortlessly slipped back to the 1980s. It was going to be a fine day, and I smiled into the rearview mirror as a car approached from behind.

A glass storage bowl by Pryex or Pampered Chef of the 375 ml size will work great as well. Be sure to butter the bowl well. Once this bun is cooked it may be eaten warm with butter, or used for a sandwich or as a hamburger bun. You can also toast it and enjoy it with your favorite toppings such as peanut butter, cheese spread or bacon, lettuce and tomato. This bread is also great to use for French toast, by dipping the slices into beaten egg, and then into a buttered fry pan.

You can buy almond flour in several grocery stores, and the bigger bags are

more economical if you are doing keto, or cooking for a gluten free family member.

Almonds contain healthy monounsaturated fat, which is the same fat that makes olive oil so healthy. Almonds are high in antioxidants. Almonds are an excellent source of vitamin E, magnesium and potassium. Studies have shown that almonds lower blood sugar and insulin after meals. Almonds are also an excellent source of biotin. Biotin is beneficial for your hair, skin and nails.

Butter is a source of butyrate which has great benefits to the lining of our gut.

Twisting my head, I peered through the window. What the heck! A white-haired, wizened old man of about 93 hunkered in the driver’s seat (likely on a crocheted cushion). He gripped the steering wheel with both hands and strained to see over his arthritic knuckles, but by golly, he could drive.

Feeling a rush of admiration for this fellow, I fell back in my seat to consider the whole event. Either my driving expertise has declined sharply, and I should consider throwing in the keys, or this guy has a remarkable skill for his age. (Alternately, his foot may simply have slipped from the brake to the accelerator. Naw, I’m sure it was pure skill).

Here’s the deal – I want to be like him someday! I mean, not exactly like him.

Thanks to a close relationship between myself and “Miss Clairol,” I don’t plan on sporting white hair anytime soon, and the whole wizening thing can just pass me right on by. However, it can’t be denied that this man has quick reflexes and an enviable ability.

So, the lesson to be gleaned here is as follows: don’t get bogged down with worry over your age. It doesn’t determine your competence or aptitude in any arena of life. It’s only a number, after all.

Choose one that represents you, and hang on.

Over the years, he would collect Indigenous artifacts from the region, being fascinated by the history. He would find Indigenous artwork, beadwork, arrowheads and much more, all of which he kept. The process to gather these items took him 35 years.

Upon his death, he stipulated in his will that all of the Indigenous artifacts would be given to the Vermilion high school, where they would be used to highlight Indigenous art and history.

J.W.G Morrison, the principal of the school, would state quote: “It was Mr. Brimacombe’s interest in the life of the Indian and the wish the young men and women coming after him would be placed in a position where they could

appreciate the art and work of those fast disappearing people that led him to bequeath the most cherished of all his treasures to the Vermilion high school.”

At the time, his collection was considered to be among the largest individual collections found in all of Alberta.

The collection would be housed within glass cases at the Vermilion High School from that point on.

Christina’s Home Furnishings BBQ Fundraiser

Kirby Whitlock, owner of Christina’s Home Furnishings is no stranger to community service and volunteerism, and this week was no different. On Tuesday, June 21 Whitlock fired up the barbeque once again to hold a Fundraiser hot dog and hamburger BBQ for the Hot Lunch program at Vermilion Elementary School.

“I think it is important to support different organizations and programs within the community. It always feels great to be able to help out and give back to the community,” commented Whitlock.

For the rest of the summer, Whitlock is hoping to hold a BBQ fundraiser ever y Tuesday in front of Christina Home Furnishings for organizations and programs that would like to receive a little extra help that can be had by holding the BBQs. “I would like to help as many organizations or programs as I can with these BBQs. If anyone would like us to hold one in support of their program or organization all they have to do is contact me

at the store. Once the food cost is looked after all the proceeds are donated to the organization or program. The next BBQ on June 28 weather permitting will be for the VES Hot Lunch program again and we are hoping to do one for Hearts and Hands and the Museum,” explained Whitlock.

VES Hot Lunch program head cook, Karen Hughes was very appreciative to Whitlock for holding the BBQ as the Hot Lunch Program is a very beneficial program for the students and parents of Vermilion Elementary School.

“We would like to thank Kirby for holding this fundraising BBQ for the Hot Lunch program, it takes a lot of effort to prepare something like that and we really appreciate it. As Kirby always says, ‘Go Team’ and the money raised during these BBQs will help put nutritious meals in the tummies of our children giving them the energy needed to have the ‘Go Team’ attitude in everything they do, a full tummy makes every child more productive,” commented Hughes.

Cutter Rally Donates For Cancer

The Cutter Rally for Cancer has released their final numbers from Cutter Rally for Cancer 2022. They have sent $2,000 to Haying in the 30”s. To the Lloydminster Regional Health Foundation they presented a cheque for $12,015.12 in total proceeds from the rally, donations and the silent auction. $2,000 will be put toward a new blanket warmer and $10,000 which will be called POKER CUTTER RALLY FOR CANCER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT BURSARY. The staff and students of J.R. Robson school would like to thank the community of Vermilion in their fundraising effor ts. In April, our school ran our annual flower fundraiser. As a group we decided that we were going to donate half of our proceeds to the Ukrainian Canadian Congress Alberta Provin-

cial Council. Through the generosity of people in our community J.R. Robson was able to donate $1,900 to the UCC. O n J un e 20, A l ex Po li s huk wa s able to present the donation to the UCC Alberta Council President Orysia Boychuk. Orysia was able to tell us that the donation will be used to aid refugees that are continually arriving here in Alberta.

TheyBuildBridges Joins Vermilion Elementary School

Vermilion Elementary School (VES) was the center of some fun and enlightening activities on Thursday, June 23 as they celebrated National Indigenous Day. Several stations were set up throughout

the school, including the always popular bannock making and eating.

Once again, TheyBuildBridges and friends joined VES staff and students to help educate and connect. Kevin John, his sister Debbie Semeniuk along with several Indigenous community members spent

the day with a school community that looks forward to the time they get to spend together. John and his companions look forward to the days they spend at VES too.

On their Facebook page that evening, he thanked VES for their continuing support of Indigenous learning, “Niyanan nanas-

The Vermilion Ag Society presented their first Gears and Cheers Car Show under beautiful blue skies and with wonderfully warm weather conditions on Sunday, June 26.

This family-friendly event had numerous classic cars and trucks, as well as souped up vehicles for attendees to view and ask questions about. The owners of the vehicle were in their element as they discussed the modifications some of the vehicles have undergone and the history of their project.

Gears And Cheers

recounted the story of how his grandmothers’ car was sold out of the family and one day he saw it and asked the owner if he could buy it back.

Keith and William Crocker are proud owners of a 69’ mustang and explained that they were always into vintage tractors, but decided to purchase the mustang as well.

“We are usually into vintage tractors and participate in the vintage tractor pulls at the Fair each year, but decided to branch out into the classic cars when the mustang became available,” Keith explained.

Classic and modified cars were not the only thing to partake in at the event,

adults also had the opportunity to taste test alcoholic beverages from three local distilleries and breweries, such as Copper Cork Distillery-Vermilion, Journey North Cider-Bonnyville and Cold Lake Brewing and Distillery was on hand. If alcohol wasn’t an attendee’s forte they could enjoy the two food vendors on site. Something Sweet Coffee & Bake Shop –Mannville was offering lunch, snack and beverage items and Hero’s Food Truck-Wainwright offered the fair like food to enjoy.

Coordinator of the event and Ag Society executive member Nicole Polishuk was pleased with the turnout at the event and was excited to offer the family-friendly event.

“This is our first year for this event and I am super excited about it all! I am hoping the event will grow and we will be able to make this an annual event and expand it to have tractors and motorcycles etc. in the future. We don’t only have vehicles from the Vermilion area; we have them from Bonnyville and Rivercourse. It would be awesome to have it even bigger and better next year,” commented Polishuk.

The event was very affordable as admission was by donation, the food prices were on par and the tickets to try the drinks from the local establishments were only $5 each. Proceeds from the event will be used to help renovate the washrooms at the Ag Society.

Western Institute Has Grand Re-Opening

Shane Croke and his team of instructors and students have relocated their Vermilion administration office to 51 Avenue in the Cornerstone Co-op Administration building, and hosted a fundraising BBQ on June 23 to celebrate their new location. Croke’s crew and some helpful volunteers served up hotdogs and hamburgers to community members before the rain came.

Next to the BBQ, the Western Institute Emergency Medical Responder Students (EMR) and the Vermilion Fire Department

performed a mock scenario vehicle extrication scene. The two teams used the Jaws of Life to remove accident victims, and demonstrate how they dismantle a car when necessary. Spectators were invited to ask questions about procedures and see a live rescue.

The Institute chose to donate all proceeds from the BBQ to the FOCUS Ve r m i l i o n Tr a n s p o r t at i o n S e r v i c e Program. “We wanted people to know we had moved, and wanted to give back to the community too. Being a former paramedic, I know how this service will benefit the community,” stated Croke.

You may have sung it in grade school and still hear it before hockey games, but what do you really know about “O Canada?” Here are some fun facts about our national anthem.

• It was originally written in Quebec.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CANADA “O Canada” was first commissioned in 1880 by the Lieutenant Governor of Quebec for Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day. The Wishing All Of Our Customers a song’s music was composed by Calixa Lavallée and the lyrics were written by poet and judge Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier.

• It wasn’t translated until 1908.

The English version was originally written by the Honourable Robert Stanley Weir. Since then, it’s undergone a few changes, including the addition of a fourth, more religious verse in 1926 and another change to make the anthem gender neutral in 2018.

• The English and French versions are nothing alike.

Aside from the words “O Canada,” the lyrics to the English and French versions of the anthem are completely different.

The French lyrics make reference to the Catholic religion and refer to Canada as a land of ancestors. The English version is a simpler affirmation of love and service to the nation.

• It wasn’t official until 1980.

“O Canada” didn’t officially become the national anthem until 1980. Before then, “God Save the Queen” was sung at important events and it remains the royal anthem of Canada.

5 Things Canadians Do Best Canadians have a global reputation for being friendly and polite. However, Canucks have a lot more going for them than being wellmannered. To celebrate Canada Day, here are five things that this country and its citizens do best.

1. Comedy What do Eugene Levy, Mike Myers, Samantha Bee, John Candy, Catherine O’Hara and Jim Carrey have in common? They all hail from the Great White North and are prominent names in the world of comedy.

2. Hockey This sport is an inarguable part of the Canadian identity. Professional teams have won more championships than any other country, and national teams regularly top the world rankings.

3. Cottage country Canada has more lakes than any other coun­ try in the world. When combined with ocean coastlines, mountain ranges, unique deserts and abundant wilderness, Canada provides more opportunities to get away from it all than just about anywhere else.

4. Slang In addition to their regional accents, Canadians use terms and idioms that’re all their

own. Where else can you say, “I’m going to put on my toque, drive a few clicks down the road and pick up a two-four”?

VES Grade 6 students and staf f would like to extend a huge thank you to JR Robson for the great orientation to Grade 7 on June 20. The students were very excited to meet their teachers and see their classroom and experience the life of a seventh grader.

On June 20, Grade 3 students did a tadpole check in. The tadpoles are growing back legs and becoming stronger swimmers. Soon the front legs will develop. Once the front and back legs are developed, the frogs will begin learning to breathe through their lungs.

What a great science opportunity.

Kindergarten had two beautiful afternoons at the Vermilion Provincial Park on June 21 and 22. They played mini golf, had fun on the playground, explored the caboose and netted water critters. A special stop was made to visit Maneet’s family store, the Circle K. They got to meet his mom and dad who sent them away with cookies. Thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Singh and to the parent helpers.

Grade 1 students were busy learning about the needs of plants and animals.

Thank you to Nutrien for providing the Grade 1 classes with the Seed Survivor Kits. Students in 1B enjoyed taking care of their sunflowers and watching them grow. In 1A, students examined

and identified the parts of a bean seed and then made their own greenhouses to sprout them.

On the mornings of June 21 and 22, kindergarten students got to be first graders in training, and the Grade 1 students got to play in the kindergarten room. The kindergarten kids are definitely ready for Grade 1.

VES celebrated Indigenous Peoples’ Day on June 23. We opened the day by welcoming JR Robson’s Grade 7 and 8 students and listening to a drum group.

VES students were then able to participate in beading and listen to storytelling (while eating bannock). At the end of the day, we gathered together with JR’s

Grade 9 students for a round dance. We would like to thank the following individuals for making this day so special: Kevin John, Arlene Folk, Debbie Semeniuk, Elaina John, Hannah Semeniuk, Ruth Semeniuk, Wendy Gallant, Tia Desjarlais and Shawna Desjarlais and drum group members Leon Whitstone, Takota Stonechild and Trennan Whitstone.

This school year ended with a splash for the elementary students at STJ. The classes were split in half and each went to the pool and had a blast splashing and playing in the water together. Last Thursday, elementary students had the opportunity to participate in our Track and Field event. Mr. Martin organized everything and it went smoothly! Events included ball kick, ball throw, standing and running long jump, and three sepa-

rate running races. Hungry tummies were grateful to the volunteers from the Credit Union who came to BBQ hotdogs, and they even brought Fat Cat with them! Overall, the weather held, the kids had fun, and certainly got their fair share of exercise. Thank you to Mr. Martin and the high school volunteers who ran the stations and cheered our kiddos on! Go Spartans!

Our students are grateful for the chance to take their learning outside the classroom these past couple of weeks.

Our grade 2’s journeyed to Vegreville’s pysanka egg, explored the playground and paths in the park, and hit up DQ for a sweet way to end the day. The grades 4 and 5 classes explored the newly renovated Fort Edmonton Park, a living museum where students developed a great appreciation for life in the past. Our grade 1 students visited the Provincial Park on Friday for a special soccer camp, nature walk, and playground adventure. They ended with a fun scrimmage and smiles for all.

Lakeland’s Expanded Health Care Aide Options

Lakeland College Submitted

(Lloydminster, Alta.) Students preparing for an in-demand career in health care now have more study options with Lakeland College including taking labs in Wainwright.

This fall, Lakeland will offer three different delivery models for its health care aide program: • In-person at Lakeland’s Lloydminster campus, with all classes and labs on campus during the week; • Online theory and monthly weekend labs at the Lloydminster campus; or • Online theory and monthly weekend labs in Wainwright, Alta.

The program features three practicums for students to put their education into action, building their skills and networks prior to graduation. In less than one year,

students will be ready to work as vital members of the healthcare field.

“We are very excited to offer more options for our students this fall. We know how crucial health care aides are in the healthcare system. We also know that this particular field will face a labour shortage over the next 10 years across the country.

Providing more seats and flexible program options will help more students achieve their goals and prepare them to join the health care field and support communities,” says Janice Aughey, dean of the School of Health, Wellness and Human Services.

“We are grateful for the Government of Alberta’s support, which will allow Lakeland to grow our health care aide enrollment by an additional 100 seats over the next three years in both Lloydminster and Wainwright.”

Complete with three delivery options, Lakeland’s full-time health care aide program trains students to provide clientcentered care, personal grooming and hygiene, medical delivery assistance and more. Students also gain 320 hours of workplace experience through fulltime clinical placements at three different settings.

Students can begin their Lakeland journey this fall. For assistance with enrolment, email hello@lakelandcollege.ca Graduates of the health care aid program are qualified to work with people who need care in home care, long-term care, assisted living facilities, hospices, hospitals and other health centres.

Wainwright – South Campus - Info Session

Anyone interested in learning more about applying to the health care aide program in Wainwright is encouraged to attend an Info Session on Thursday, July 7 at 7 p.m. at the Wainwright Communiplex. Lakeland’s admissions and enrolment team will be on-site to answer questions. More information is also available at lakelandcollege.ca/ HCA. Lakeland’s Wainwright delivery option is supported by the Town of Wainwright, Wainwright Economic Development and Alberta Health Services.

In May, the Government of Alberta announced the Alberta at Work initiative, which includes targeted enrolment expansion in high-demand programs. Lakeland received $990,000 to support enrolment growth in the health care aide and animal health technology programs.

“Our history” is wrapped up in our parent’s lives and when they die our history is untold.

“Our present ” is in our Spouse / Companion’s lives and when one dies the present is severed. Today I would like to fo c u s o n “ O ur Future,” our children. When the death of a child occurs, whether from pregnancy, still born, infant loss, loss of child or youth or an adult child the World Assumption, that the elderly die first, is shattere d. T h e p are nt r o l e i s s e e n a s protector, teacher, nurturer and when life ceases at any age the parent ’s mind often is filled with emotions of; guilt, anger, blame of self and others and the why’s and what if’s. It is said the loss of a child is the worst loss and more difficult to work through the grief.

Those impacted by the loss of a child would surly agree. The future with

that person is gone as are the dreams (death of dreams). For some the loss of their child is sudden and traumatic, which increased the work of mourning and grief and leaves loved ones with so many emotions needing to be acknowledged and dealt with. The reality and shock leaves loved ones somewhat frozen in their grief and struggling to cope daily. A great hole has been left in the family’s life and for each individual in the family. Relationships suffer and often break apart.

Communic ation barrier s are when words often can’t express what one is really feeling. This is yet another grief to deal with.

Remember the grandparents, too.

Grandparents grieve too, both the loss of a grandchild and the pain of their children’s loss and grief. Acknowledge and support grandparents as their loss is great too. Grandparents may quietly remain in the background but are feel-

ing their pain and helplessness, too.

Siblings are so of ten overlooked as experiencing their deep grief and watching their parents who are in such emotional pain. They are in need of a supportive person, group or counsellor, as their lives have changed forever too.

Societ y of ten puts a burden on t h o s e w h o h ave h a d a c h i l d d i e . (called- disenfranchised grief).

Comments such as; “You never got to know your baby, or you can have another.” For the child or youth who died in an accident or other trauma death the comment might be, “Parents should have been parenting better.”

Fo r t h o s e w h o h ave h ad a n ad u l t child die and are elderly parents the comment is “The parent is elderly so they won’t feel the loss”.

T h e r e i s h o p e a m i d s t t h e p a i n.

There will be symptoms that affects the whole of you as a person, feelings that are overwhelming. You may

even feel frozen. Seek out support for your grief journey -the deepest-darkest pain. There is support by finding a friend who understands to talk with, a counsellor or support group. Please access one of these and talk through the pain. For children seek a support and a place for them to talk and be heard and work through their pain. A suggestion is the Hope After Loss – Audra’s Legacy program which begins in September for 10 weeks for 6-16 year olds.

For those who grieve, be gently with yourselves as you go through your grief and feel overwhelming pain.

Seek suppor t, take some time and space and find people and places that are a comfort. Carry on your days in small portions.

For those who support, reach out, forget the cliché, and really seek to understand. Listen with your heart and be a companion.

Town’s Strategic Plan In Place

Town Council held a regular meeting on June 21, here are the highlights. Councillor Robert Snow was sworn in as Deputy Mayor for July and August 2022.

Sgt. Dunsmore of the Vermilion RCMP Detachment presented his 4th Quarter Community Policing Report to the Town Council. He discussed two new RCMP initiatives, the Body Worn Camera program, and the Alberta RCMP App. The camera program helps increase transparency for RCMP and citizen interactions.

Field tests of the cameras will begin later in 2022. The app is a free download that provides residents with online access to news, crime reporting, detachment locations, crime mapping and statistics. People can also report non-urgent incidents on the app.

Sgt. Dunsmore also reviewed the three community priorities. Crime Reduction has seen property crime with an 18 per cent decrease in property crimes. Police/ Community Relations, there have been two town halls and two community engagements initiatives this past year. Finally, traffic enforcement fell short of goals but only by an 8 per cent margin. At present, there are nine established detachment positions with eight working officers.

The Strategic Plan was introduced by Shari-Anne Doolaege of SAGE Analytics Inc.. Doolaege opened her presentation with an acknowledgement to Judy Tran and Ted Gillespie for assisting with the workshop and the creation of the Strategic Plan. This document sets the direction for the community going forward and guides Council’s decision making and the accomplishment of their goals. The top 5 key priorities for the Council, Vision, Mission, Values, Slogan, Strategic Priorities were discussed. Developed from Council and community input, these are the councils focus through this plan.

This motion was carried.

Annual Recognition and Service Awards Policy moved by Deputy Mayor Joshua Rayment, “That Council for the Town of Vermilion approve the 2022 Staff Recognition Policy to be effective June 16, 2022.” This motion was carried.

Deputy Mayor Joshua Rayment moved that, “Council for the Town of Vermilion approve the settlement offer of $300,000 from MPE Engineering and their subconsultant TetraTech.” The motion carried.

Council meetings can now be attended by the public in person at the Town office.

You can also continue to watch Council meetings through the Town’s YouTube channel which you can access through their website. The next regular Council meeting is July 19, at 6 p.m.
