Cowboy Action Match Welcomes Chief Firearm Officer

The Vermilion Gun Club held the first competition of the year on June 4 and 5 welcoming 27 competitors to showcase their skills with classic single action guns, rifles and double barrel shotguns in a Cowboy Action Match. This fun match had competitors divide into two posses, then safely and accurately shoot their way through 12 stages over the two days they were down at the range. Contestants must safely follow a series of steps at each stage, with four members of their posse at each stage to help ensure the safe loading and unloading of the firearms. Gun Club director and competition organizer Blaine Felt emphasized the importance of the safety procedures, “Safety is paramount in this competition, it is safer than people realize”. Not following the safety measures in place can result in a cowboy not only getting
time penalties added on to their score, but they can also be disqualified for not adhering to them. The shooters can also receive time violations for missing targets, procedural errors, and not unloading properly at the end of each stage. The competition isn’t all about cowboy action, there is also the opportunity for some fellowship and connecting with some very talented shooters. Contestants were also treated to a swap meet and supper at Johnston’s Campground Saturday evening. Attending the first competition since her appointment to the position, Chief Firearms Officer for Alberta, Teri Bryant stopped in on Saturday to meet competitors and Gun Club members. Bryant will be attending shows and competitions to build and enhance relationships within all aspects of the firearms community in Alberta. There are Chief Firearms Officers in every province and territory, but Bryant is

only one of the two provincially appointed Officers (Saskatchewan is the other province) who can advocate for positive change to improve public safety. In a discussion with Bryant regarding the Liberals reintroduction of Bill C-21 this past week (see also a release from MP Shannon Stubbs in this issue), she pointed out the shortcomings of the three major goals of the bill. The goals of C-21 include a freeze on handgun sales and transfering, accelerating the timeline for the Orders in Council regarding the confiscation of certain firearms throughout Canada, and to establish stricter magazine regulations for particular cartridges. Like many other firearm supporters and advocates, Bryant notes that these three goals are not helpful to the prevention of gun violence and crime, but will instead simply create a large financial bill for the Canadian Government and taxpayers. Not only will there be the costs of

financial compensation for the confiscation program, but there is also the manpower cost to organize, set up and manage the program. Not to mention the added responsibilities to local police authorities in executing the program and then managing the storage and destruction of the confiscated weapons. “Canada already possesses strict rules regarding the purchase of legal firearms”, she stated. “Screening needs to be more focused, and should focus on the person looking to acquire a firearm, not the type of firearm they are purchasing.” “It is really important that law-abiding firearm owners continue to hold their events, such as gun shows and competitions to provide opportunities for the creation and preservation of a positive firearms culture to counteract misleading and harmful images seen in the media and elsewhere.” says Bryant.

Vermilion Jr. B Tigers Hire New Coach

The Vermilion Jr. B Tigers were on the hunt for a new head coach and Danny Haygarth responded. H ayg ar t h i s n o s t r a n g er to t h e hockey communit y and resides in Lloydminster. He is married with four children, two of which are twin boys, 22, who are currently playing for the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings hockey team, in the ACAC. Haygar th also has a 19 -year- old daughter and a 17-year-old son who played hockey for the U18 AA Blazers, last season. Haygarth has been involved with hockey his whole life as he played minor hockey in Lloydminster. He played four years of Jr. A Hockey, two years with the Lloydminster Blazers, and two seasons with the Sherwood Park Crusaders of the AJHL. At the age of 21, Haygarth finished playing hockey and began his coaching career, where he has coached Midgets A A, Junior B Bandits in Lloydminster for three years, and they won the NEAJBHL title all three years, winning provincials twice, and

representing Alberta at the Western Canadian Championships, earning a silver medal in the 1997-98 season. He then moved on to coach the Lloydminster B la zer s of the A JHL for three years where he was the assistant coach for the first two years and was head coach his last year with the Blazers. After that, Haygarth took a break from coaching Junior hockey, to help with coaching minor hockey with his young family. Haygarth also served as the director of the Lloydminster Bantam AAA Heat, for eight seasons during this time. “I knew that I wanted to get back into c oac hing Junior ho c key, and now that my children are grown, I saw that the Tigers were looking for applications for a coach, so now is the time, so I applied,” commented Haygarth. Up on ac c e pting the p osition of h e a d c o a c h fo r t h e J r. B T i g e r s , Haygarth and the team have made a two-year commitment, but said, “I understand that being a coach also means you can be let go at any time,
so hopefully I can fullfill those two rink,” commented Haygarth. years,” Haygarth said with a chuckle. “My teams in the past have always been hardworking and disciplined. The fundraiser was held to raise funds for the new Transport Van the organization has purchased to help provide transportation for individuals requiring transport to medical appointments outside the community. During the BBQ, residents could purchase a hamburger/hotdog and a beverage for $5. They could also opt to partake in dunking a volunteering member of the Town Council, Councilman Paul Conlon or Mayor Greg Throndson, the executive director of FOCUS Robert Snow, or

the business stated, “It is with a lot of thought we have decided to close. Many fac tor s have c ontributed to our decision. According to Dawn Riley, FOCUS program director special projects, the service is hoping to launch the middle part of June and will be providing nonemergent transportation to Vermilion and area residents. “This service is intended for medical appointments at health facilities outside of the Vermilion area. Health Care Facilities and private residences will have the ability to access the FOCUS Transport Service. For example, if an individual has an appointment in Camrose for a CAT Scan and does not have transportation to the appointment they can contact us
to make arrangements for transport, etc.” commented Riley. The FOCUS Transport Service will be a fee-for-service and the client is droppedoff at their appointment and then picked up by the same vehicle when the appointment is complete. The bus can transport up to five clients and is wheelchair accessible. One of the goals of the service is to help reduce the strain on the current EMS service while providing peace of mind to community members who struggle to find transportation to medical appointments outside of Vermilion. Shoppers Drug Mart Run For Women
Shoppers Drug Mart has been well known for exclusive women’s fundraisers. Their main fundraiser over the years is the LOVE YOU by Shoppers Drug Mart Run for Women, which is a 5k and 10k walk /run in support of local women’s mental health programs in 18 cities across Canada. Over the last year, the Shoppers Drug Mart employees diligently completed fundraisers to raise funds for their participation in the annual Shoppers Drug Mart Run for Women. The crew completed a perfume, Easter basket,
In-store bake sale, Jeans on Friday, bottle drive, yoga night, and paper shoe sale fundraisers. Through the different fundraisers, the Vermilion location was able to raise $2665.90 for the Lois Hole Hospital for Women. This is 4th year Vermilion Shoppers Drug Mart had participated in the Run for Women. The first year was in-person, and then the last two years were completed in a virtual setting due to COVID. The 11 participants from Vermilion Shoppers Drug Mart were happy to attend in-person in Edmonton at the Sir Wilfred Laurier Park this year. “I was unable to attend this year, but it
looked and sounded like it was great fun and they are looking forward to next year. I would also like to send a huge shout out the Eagle’s Nest for the donation of bottles,” commented Shoppers Drug Mart, front store manager, Janice Hoffman. In total, the Shoppers Drug Mart stores in Northern Alberta were able to raise $240,000 for the Lois Hole Hospital for Women. The mission of The Lois Hole Hospital for Women is to advance and advocate for the health of women through support from donors to the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation. Annual Wainwright Stampede

The annual event is held each year at the Wainwright Stampede Grounds and draws onlookers from all over Alberta. On June 24 the CPCA chuckwagon races will start at 5 p.m. The rodeo boasts Team Roping, Barrel Racing, Saddle Bronc, Tie-Down Roping, Steer Wrestling, Bull Riding, and Bareback at 7:30 p.m. with the Ladies Breakaway roping as a new event year. Saturday, June 25, the Downtown Parade (route available on the website) featuring a ‘Salute to Healthcare Professionals’ theme will kick off the day. Moving into the afternoon the rodeo will begin at 1 p.m. with all the same events as on Friday. The CPCA Chuckwagon races will start at 5 p.m. and the Rodeo Under the Lights at 9 p.m. The much anticipated Stampede Cabaret featuring Donny Lea at the Wainwright Peace Memorial Multiplex will be at 9:30 p.m. with a $20 cover. The final day of the three-day event will feature the CPCA Chuckwagon races at 2 p.m. with the Battle for the Buckles at 6:30 p.m. featuring 10 bulls, 60 horses, 90 contestants, and eight events. West Coast Amusements will be preparing for the influx of people that come every year to enjoy the midway full of rides and games. This year the midway will boast 15 rides, 15 plus games, and 12 plus food venues, sporting all the fan fair food such as cotton candy, candy apples, mini donuts, ice cream, Hawaiian shaved ice, freshsqueezed lemonade, corn dogs, ribbon fries, hot dogs, sno cones, poutine, and much more. There will also be a wide array of pancake breakfasts and lunches throughout the week. “It is with great excitement that we welcome you to the 69th annual Wainwright Stampede. This annual stampede is an integral part of our community and western heritage. Each year we go above and beyond to accommodate the rodeo contestants, chuck wagon drivers and our wonderful fans in the stands. This could not be possible without the many hands that are needed to make each year a success. This year will not disappoint, as we have a full line-up of events that span over the week. There is a little something for all ages. In Canadian history, no one has ser ved longer as prime minister than William Lyon Mackenzie King. From 1921 to 1926, then a brief gap of a few months, then from 1926 to 1930, and 1935 to 1948, he was the prime minister. That totals 21 years, way longer than anyone else. Ironically, when he came to visit Vermilion, he was not prime minister, but the Leader of the Opposition. It was on Aug 9, 1933 when he came to the area for an evening event after travel-

Lessons Learned I come from a family of great penny pinchers. My parents taught me well. Of course, we prefer to think of ourselves as thrifty, economical, or even cautious. Still, it all boils down to the same thing – cheap. I think it comes from having parents and grandparents who lived through the dirty thirties and other tough times. They knew how to repurpose long before it became trendy. Syrup tins became lunch pails, hand-medowns were expected, and there was zero waste. It was a way of life. When I was a kid, I didn’t understand all that. Once, after visiting the home of a young friend, I whined to my mother, “Katie has so many pretty dresses. Why don’t I?” In a fresh wave of misery, I recalled a Christmas concert where I dreamt of sweeping through the door in a white lace dress with

Buffalo Trail Schools Hold Division Track Meet
JR Robson High School once again hosted track and field athletes this season for the Buffalo Trail Public Schools Jr. High Track Finals on June 2. Students and staff from around the division enjoyed an almost perfect weather day to show off their skills and sportsmanship. Athletes who participated on Thursday were the top competitors in the North and South track meets held the week before. The Grade 6 classes from both Vermilion Elementary School and St. Jerome’s School received a very informative tour of the Vermilion Airport and some planes on May 31 and June 2. The students from both schools have been working on an aviation module as part of the grade 6 curriculum and were invited to the Vermilion Airport by the Vermilion River Flying Club so they could see and learn firsthand about the operations of the airport and some of the planes which are housed there. “As Flying Club members we think it is really important to expose them to this as much as we can and help them learn about the airport, about planes and how they fly, as well as the operations of an airport, and a little bit about meteorology that is involved when operating an airplane,” explained Vermilion River Flying Club president Darcy Balaneski. Flying Club member and Pilot Erwin Warkentin explained to the VES students on the first day of the tour how some of the controls work, how planes turn, what factors cause the planes to turn, and the basics of flight. He also spoke with the children about the different levels of pilot licenses and the ages they can be obtained. “Do you know at what age you can

become a student pilot?” asked Warkentin. The children were surprised to learn that you can become a student pilot in training at the age of 14. Flying Club member Larry Bingham had the opportunity to explain to both groups how to complete a pre-flight walk around to ensure an aircraft is safe to take flight, as well as, the principles of flight. Flying Club member Jim Bristowe intrigued the grade 6 students with a few different remote control aircraft as he taught them about the different controls and about why airplanes fly. He also spoke on safety and regulations surrounding the operations of remote control airplanes. “This big plane here can travel at very high speeds and cause irreparable harm if not flown correctly and in the correct area. You cannot fly planes just anywhere, they have to be flown in special areas,” commented Bristow. Bristow also quizzed the pre-teens on various parts of the planes. Balaneski who is a Pilot and also works at the Flight Service Station at the Lloydminster airport dealing with flight communications between airplanes and vehicles on the ground, as well as, meteorology for weather reporting for Environment Canada toured the airport with the children teaching them a little bit about meteorology and explaining different parts and components of the
airport to them. Safety coordinator Shawn Jacula also spoke on the importance of the local airport and said, “During COVID we had about 94 air ambulances come in here to assist our community. I think a lot of people think that air ambulance is just helicopters, but a lot of traffic is fix-winged aircraft and they need the runaway.” He also explained the importance

of the airport for the agricultural community, “There is also a spray plane that is used for saving our crops which is so very important. Vermilion is actually the only paved registered airport in the County of Vermilion River, so when Farmers have bugs that come in or need the crops saved by air it’s a vital part of our agricultural community as well.”

Vendor financing or financing using third party mortgages or encumbrances upon the purchased lands, or other similar financing arrangements, cannot be accommodated. The auctioneer, councillors, the chief administrative officer, the designated officers, and employees of the municipality must not bid or buy any parcel of land offered for sale, unless directed by the municipality to bid for or buy a parcel of land on behalf of the municipality. If no offer is received on a property or if the reserve bid is not met, the property cannot be sold at the public auction. Once the property is declared sold to another individual at public auction the previous owner has no further right to pay the tax arrears. The risk of the property lies with the purchaser immediately following the auction. The purchaser will be required to execute a Sale Agreement in form and substance provided by the municipality. The purchaser is responsible for obtaining vacant possession. The purchaser will be responsible for the transfer registration fee. The Town of Vermilion may, after the public auction, become the owner of any parcel of land that is not sold at the public auction. FCC Supports Beef Sustainability Program
Submitted Far m Cre d i t Can ad a (FCC) h a s created a new offering to attract and recognize Canadian beef producers certified to sustainability standards set by the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (CRSB). The FCC Sustainability Incentive Program will provide a payment to FCC customers who are CRSB Certifie d t hroug h CRS B ’s Cer t ifi c at i o n Bodies including Verified Beef Production Plus, Where Food Comes From Canada, and the Ontario Corn Fed Beef Quality Assurance Program. “Canadian producers are already expert stewards of the land and livestock, and the beef sector has been a leader in demonstrating their sustainable practices through the CRSB,” said Todd Klink, FCC’s vice -president of marketing. “We are pleased to work with the CRSB to recognize FCC customers who have already achieved their cer tification and to encourage additional producers to become certified.” The payment to customers, made by FCC, will be calculated as a portion of their lending with FCC to a maximum of $2,000 per year. Certified producers are welcome to re-apply for the incentive payment each year for the life of the FCC Sustainability Incentive Program. For customers who are already CRSB Certified, applying for the program is a simple process at fcc.ca/sustainabilityprograms. That is also where producers interested in becoming certified and taking advantage of the incentive payment can find more information. “ The Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef applauds FCC for seeing the benefits of CRSB Certified beef production practices,” said Anne Wasko, CRSB chair and co-owner of Bar 4 Bar Land and Cattle Inc.

Launching this program with the CRSB is another way to support the industry on its sustainability journey,” said Klink. “While collaborating with

Gopher Eradication Underway

A partnership between Alberta Environment and Parks and the Vermilion Soccer Association (VSA) is underway to help combat the gopher population within Vermilion Provincial Park’s boundaries. The holes are considered a safety hazard as some get big enough to cause people to trip very easily. On June 2, over 20 volunteers spent a few hours placing over 2000 flags at the entrances of gopher holes so that on June 6, the holes could be filled with foam. The foam causes the gophers to go deeper into their holes, preventing them from get ting out. Twent yfour hours after filling the holes, the exterminator contracted to fill them will check if foaming is needed again. Unfortunately, 2000 flags were not
enough to mark all the holes, so a second shif t will be happening on Tuesday June 7. The goal is to do the entire park, including the soccer fields, campground, CN Station roadways and open areas. The VSA is donating the manpower to get the holes identified and marked, and Alberta Parks is covering the cost of the extermination. If you are a soccer fa m i l y, h e l p i n g o u t w i t h this project will go towards your volunteer hours for t h i s s e a s o n . Liberals Re-Introduce Bill C-21 Firearms Confiscation
Submitted O n M ay 3 0 , 2 0 2 2 , t h e f e d e r a l Li b er al M ini ster of Pu b li c Safet y, Marco Mendicino, re-introduced Bill C - 21 i n t h e H o u s e o f C o m m o n s , which includes a “freeze” on handgun ownership in Canada. The previous Bill C-21, which contained a number of provisions, including a firearms confiscation program, did not pass all stages to become law before the election in 2021. MP Stubbs was the Shadow Minister for Public Safet y before the last election, and led the Conser vative Of ficial Opposition’s efforts against Bill C-21 at the time. Stubbs, the Member of Parliament for Lakeland and the current Shadow Minister for Rural Economic Development and Broadband, commented on Monday’s announcement: “This Liberal government always
makes a big show about cracking down on gun violence whenever there is a mass shooting tragedy in either the United States – or, more rarely but no less urgent and heart breaking, in Canada - but their policies won’t actually make the streets and communities safer for Canadians. The current Bill C-21 is a lot like the old one. It targets law-abiding firearms owners, collectors, and retailers while failing to combat the cause of most gun crime in Canada: criminals and gangs with illegally smuggled guns. Today’s so-called freeze on handgun ownership is truly a wasteful and ineffective “guns for gangs only” approach that punishes already legal, law abiding firearms owners, and won’t stop criminals and gangsters who already break the laws, and aren’t worried about lawfully following rules or filing
paperwork.” C a n a d a’s C o n s e r vat i ve s a r e committed to actually strengthen and se cure public safet y through real action to tackle gun crime head-on. Conser vatives have always urged increased funding and coordination for border securit y to clamp down on illegal firearms smuggling, and continue to call for mandatory minimum penalties to keep violent gang members off the street, and to focus on gangs and criminals by ending automatic bail, revoking parole for gang members, and new and tougher sentences for ordering or involvement in violent gang crime. “The reality is that gun crime and shootings are up in Canada under the Liberals. But, incredibly, right now, the Liberals are also pushing through legislation that will eliminate

mandator y minimum sentences for d ang erous cr iminals c onvi c ted of a wide range of violent gun crimes like robber y, ex tor tion, traf ficking and discharging with intent. A core responsibilit y of government is to protect public safety, and Canadians everywhere, especially in big cities where gun smuggling and crimes are on the rise, should rightfully expect government action, but this Liberal approach is backwards. “Unlike the Liberals, Canad a’s C o n ser vat i ve s fo c u s o n real outcomes and whether laws actually achieve objectives. What Bill C-21 proves is that the Liberals, as always, are more concerned with a p p ear an c e s. T h ey p l ay fa st an d loose with the facts, make up words to scare, and ignore the actual problem. “

Village Of Mannville A Busy Place

The Village of Mannville was the place to be on June 4 as it was hopping with places to go and things to see. The Village held its annual Village Wide Community Garage Sale, which boasted a lot of treasures and interesting items for visitors to meander their way through. Also, on Saturday the Mannville Elks Lodge 395 held their 3rd Annual Bike Rally and Classic Car event. The event was hosted by the Mannville Elks, with support from neighbouring lodges in Wainwright, Viking, Irma, and Vermilion. Registration was between 8:30 a.m and 9:30 a.m. and their wheels were up at 10 a.m. The Bike Rally riders travelled around 240 kilometers. They started the ride in Mannville, travelling down to Viking, then through Irma, and stopping in Wainwright for a lunch provided by the Wainwright Elks. The riders then travelled up to Vermilion and ended in Mannville, where the riders reconvened at the Gazebo for a Beef on a Bun supper with prizes handed out at 4:30 p.m. In addition to the bikes, there were classic cars entered in the rally.
The riders and car owners in the rally paid an entry fee of $25, which covered the cost of prizes, and lunch with the rest of the proceeds going to local events and charities. “We would like to give many thanks to our sponsors, Confectionery 881, ATB Financial, Mannville and Area Liquor Store, Village of Mannville, Mannville Hotel, Vermilion Credit Union Mannville Branch, Co-op Cornerstone, Doug’s Backhoe, Baba Jenny’s, and Reflections Funeral Home. I would also like to thank the Elks members, Mannville Elks Royal Purple Ladies #205 and the Mannville Multi 4-H Club and Rally participants. Many hands make light work”, said Event Chairperson, Jim Storch. The Bike Rally and the CommunityWide Garage Sale wasn’t the only events to attend. Shine, a family-owned business in Mannville that specializes in products and services that help you to shine from the inside out according to local owner Vicky Marshall also held a Psychic Fair and Market which consisted of 15 readers including an Animal Communicator, Tarot Card Readers, Oracle Card Readers, an Aura Reader, and Intuitive Mediums as well as, five Healers who offered Craniosacral Massage, Sound
Bath Energy Clearings, Reiki, EFT Tapping and Galactic Healing. The market side of the event had a wide variety of vendors who offered handmade and/or metaphysical products. Jewelry, crowns, fairy lanterns, gnomes, plants, plant pots, decorative, cement trays, paintings, weighted therapy

items, bookmarks, keychains, apothecary items, tarot and oracle card decks and much much more. The Fair and Market was a free admission event held at the Mannville Rec Centre. There was also a Senior Ball Tournament on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Library Artist Of The Month
For the month of June, visitors to the Vermilion Public Library will be treated to some of local artist John Lychak’s personal favourite works. All of the pieces Lychak has displayed are works that he is very proud of, each with a story on their own. When asked if there was a particular piece he would like mentioned in the write up, Lychak was quick to talk about Memories of Greenlawn. An acr ylic
painting done on watercolor paper on display right inside the library doors. The painting is a tribute to the original racetrack by Dewberry at Greenlawn. It is of the announcer station which was still standing when Lychak did the painting. He has fond memories as a child of his parents taking his family there to watch the races. For Lychak, this was an original painting from the start as he took the pictures himself of the announcer stand, and it was one of his first times using acrylic

paints on watercolor paper. In the children’s section of the library, Lychak has another painting of the same medium on display. Done at roughly the same time as Memories of Greenlawn, a portrait of Cal Ripken Jr is hanging up. He is very pleased with how this portrait turned out, and has received several compliments on his portrait of Ripken. Lychak’s work will be on display until the end of June, and it is well worth popping into the library to check it out.

Keeping Well Resource Continues To Support Alberta Seniors Emerging From Pandemic

Based on last year’s successful distribution of the Keeping Well resource and in recognition of Alberta’s upcoming Senior’s Week from June 6 to 12, Alberta Blue Cross® has once again teamed up with the Injury Prevention Centre to support the well-being of Alberta seniors as pandemic health measures ease. “The pandemic has been a challenging time for everyone, but took a particular toll on Alberta seniors,” says Brian Geislinger, vice-president of Corporate Relations with Alberta Blue Cross. “Many older adults have been living through periods of quarantine and isolation with reduced access to exercise, activity, socialization
and interaction with peers—and this has had an impact on their physical, mental and emotional health.” Keeping Well is a booklet designed to help older Albertans stay well, keep active and stay connected to lower their risk of falling. It contains a myriad of useful information for seniors ranging from activity and exercise tips to advice on fall prevention, healthy eating, medication use, vision care, mental health and avoiding fraud and scams. The free resource is available to download as a PDF document at findingbalancealberta.ca, and printed booklets can be ordered online or by phoning 780-492-6019. In 2021, a total of 15,000 copies of Keeping Well were distributed across the
province through seniors’ resource and recreation centres, seniors’ service organizations and seniors’ independent living residences. Information about the resource was also provided to physicians, nurses and pharmacies to share with patients. Falls are the leading cause of injury among seniors in Alberta and can significantly impact lifestyle and independence for older adults. Based on 2021 c e n s u s d at a , t h e population of seniors is expected to triple by 2046, which will have a big impact on the health care and long-term care

Mother And Daughter Qualify For Boston Marathon

With finishing times of 3 hrs and 28 minutes and 3 hours and 47 minutes at the Calgary Marathon May 29, Jackie Yungblut and her mom Carolyn McKinnon, from Mannville became qualifiers for the 2023 Boston Marathon. Running longer races for roughly 3 years, the duo have competed in several long distance events, including the both
the 50 km and 100 km Ironhorse Trail Runs in St. Paul. The Calgary Marathon is one of the Canadian Certified Qualifying Races for the Boston Marathon, and both Yungblut and McKinnon are very pleased with their results. Both came in under the required qualifying minimum times for their age group, so are confident in their abilities to run in Boston. Their 2022 race season is not over yet however, they will be participating in
Alberta’s only sand dune 50 km race Saturday June 11, at the Crazy Muley Ultra which starts and ends at Ribstone Brewery in Edgerton. The pair will also be competing on July 30 and 31 in the Canadian Death Race, a 125 km race through the Rocky Mountains outside of Grande Cache. Shine A Light On Brain Injury

‘Shine a Light on Brain Injury’ is the theme for the 2022 June Brain Injury Awareness Month. Brain injuries can happen in an instant and it doesn’t discriminate. Brain injury not only impacts the injured, it often changes the lives of families and friends of those affected. Minister of Health Jason Copping commented on Brain Injury month stating, “Brain Injuries can occur at any age and cause temporary or permanent cognitive, physical, behavioural and emotional changes. About 1.5 million Canadians live with an acquired
brain injury affecting many aspects of their lives.” Brain injuries can last a lifetime and they can often leave people it impacts with an inability to cope. “Those living with a brain injury can experience headaches, problems with memory, attention and judgment, depression and difficulties in social situations. These often chronic symptoms can affect every area of their lives – whether they are at home, school, work and in relationships, as well as the lives of their families, friends and colleagues,” commented Minister Copping. While some brain injuries can be prevented

which are external causes like falls, motor vehicle accidents, sports injuries, etc. not all can be prevented, these are considered internal factors such as an aneurysm, brain tumour, stroke, etc. Brain injuries can also be caused by substance abuse, such as opioid overdose. Minister Copping announced, “I am glad
that our announcement of an $81-million investment to complete construction of the University of Alberta Hospital’s Brain Centre coincides with Brain Injury Awareness Month. Albertans now and in the future, can be assured they have access to world-class technology and care, and the best chance for recovery.”

We had a very busy month with our Mock and Achievement Day as well as other activities. We held our monthly meeting a week earlier on May 4 at Minburn. We had our Mock Achievement on May 11 at Minburn Ag. Grounds and our cleanup of the Ag. Grounds on May 15. All the days went really well, we had great weather for each day. Our Achievement day was held on May 25 at
Minburn as well. Was a beautiful sunny day and all the calves look great and behaved very well. Our members did a great job and our Grand Champion was Rylan Jackson and Reserve Champion was Camille Kassian. We had a fabulous supper after the show at 5pm and our sale started at 6:30pm. We had a great bunch of buyers that came out to support. Thanks again to our sponsors for the year and all the community that has come out year after year to support.

Our educational assistants will be Mrs. Bykowski; Mrs. Forbes; Mrs. Fuller; Mrs. McPhee; Mrs. Murie; Mrs. Page; Ms. Pentelichuk; and Mrs. Prill. The administrative assistants are Mrs. Baldwin and Mrs. Cameron. Mrs. Joa is our assistant principal and Mrs. Doherty will be our principal. At the end of June, we will be saying goodbye to three staff from our VES family. We would like to thank Mrs. McLean for teaching Grade 6 this year and wish her well in her future. We will also be saying goodbye to Mrs. Moses in her capacity as an educational assistant. Mrs. Moses will be back in the fall
to deliver our Roots of Empathy program. And lastly, we say goodbye to Mrs. Tomkins as she is retiring after over 30 years of teaching. We wish the best to all three ladies as they pursue future endeavors. The Grade 6 students have been learning all about air and flight and got the opportunity to go to our local Vermilion Airport. Thank you to Shawn Jacula, Larry Bingham, Jim Bristow, Erwin Warkentin, and Darcy Balaneski for taking the time to share their knowledge and stories with our Grade 6 students. Grade 6 learned an array of new things that included, being able to have a flying license at the age of 14, to all the different types of controls in an airplane. They also got the opportunity to go and explore in the trees with two Lakeland college instructors. Students learned all about how to identify different types of trees and plants, different characteristics each plant had and so much more. Thank you so much to Robin McLean and Jennifer McGuinness for
making it such a fun adventure for the students. Congratulations to the students on their reading success this year. 144 students have reached their AR (Accelerated Reader) year end goal and several others are getting very close. 109 students earned the reward to pick a new book for the Learning Commons. They get recognition by having their name inside the book, and then they are the first to read the new book. On June 24, we will have an AR Celebration for all the students to reward them for their efforts. We are so thankful for your support with our Scholastic Book Fairs in the fall and
spring and for the Vermilion Credit Union donation towards our Accelerated Reading program which allowed us to purchase new books for our Learning Commons. St. Jerome’s Catholic School News

Graduation season is upon us, and this past week we honoured the hard work and achievements of the Graduating Class of 2022! It all started with our in-school grad ceremony on Thursday, May 26 at 2pm. Our whole St. Jerome’s school family gathered in the gym for the celebration. The tradition of the in-school grad was started by Mrs. McCormack as a way for the graduates past teachers to pay tribute to all of their students’ hard work over the years. For many graduates, they have attended St. Jerome’s for their entire academic career and have built strong and lasting bonds to our school. Grads dressed up in their cap and gowns for the service, which started with student’s biography being read as they entered the gym through a tunnel of high-fives from all of the staff.
After walking across the stage to receive their diplomas, graduates had the opportunity to pray and reflect on their time at St. Jerome’s. We all watched a PowerPoint presentation, showing images from the students as babies, and pictures of them as a class as they progressed through the grades with us. What an amazing opportunity to see how much they have grown since they started their school careers. The ceremony ended with the cap-toss, which was the highlight to watch for many of the younger Spartans. Saturday, May 28th was the formal graduation ceremony. The magic began exactly where it should… at the Church. Mass was given in honour of our graduating class with prayers and a Homily from Father about achieving success within multiple aspects of our being, spiritual, academic, and emotional wellbeing.

There was an energy of hope and joy as Mass ended and St. Jerome’s traditional candle ceremony began. The candle ceremony happens every year at the end of Mass. A song entitled “Go Light Your World” is performed, while Mr. Chase speaks using the analogy of candle light as a symbol of our spiritual connection to God. During the song, the graduates come to the front of the Church. The first candle is lit and passed down the line until all of the graduates are standing with a single flame. Then, a younger member of the St. J family is asked to step forward to receive “the light” and keep it burning bright for future generations. It is always a very special service to witness and be a part of. A big thank you to Corinne Theiss for accompanying us on the piano. Following Mass, the graduates and their families gathered at
the school for the formal graduation ceremony. The young men looked terrifically handsome in their suits and the young women were gorgeous in their gowns. Indeed, even Mr. Chase and Mr. Whelan looked striking in their Masters of Ceremony gowns! One line, that was said over and over throughout the course of this multi-day event was “Once a Spartan… Always a Spartan!” We hope you come back to visit us and say hello. We are so very proud of you!
