The Canadian Army’s largest and most complex annual training exercise is currently happening in and around the Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright. The training exercise began on May 10 and will continue until May 22. Ex Maple Resolve has approximately 3,200 Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), United States of America and United Kingdom personnel. During this time the public could see standard military pattern vehicles (SMP), Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) and other participating aircraft such as jets, helicopters, and drones, outside the Garrison Wainwright training area during the exercise. On May 10, a military convoy travelled through Wainwright to Vermilion, Kitscoty, and Paradise Valley to simulate driving into an operational theatre before they returned to the Garrison Wainwright training area. Throughout the exercises, participating

aircraft were seen flying lower and slower in circular motions to simulate realistic operational scenarios, while adhering to policies and regulations to ensure public safety. “The Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre designs and executes collective training exercises around the world creating realistic challenges and complexities. The amazing support we receive from our local communities enable our success. I ask that as you see our vehicles moving around that you keep a safe distance, but of course, I encourage you to speak with the troops and show them true western hospitality,” commented Colonel Patrick Robichaud, Commander, Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre. Most of the soldiers participating in Ex Maple Resolve 22 are from 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group (2CMBG) that are based in Petawawa, Ontario. The annual exercise is a key event to

practice interoperability with foreign partners, with approximately, 680 U.S. Army, U.S. Army Reserve, and National Guard soldiers, 20 U.S. Marines and 150 members of the British Army participating. This years exercise was the first utilization of the DATE EUROPE scenario, and focused on creating a scenario centred on a deteriorating security situation in Eastern Europe. It theoretically proposed a situation where the Baltic States were invaded from the east by a fictional force (Donovia) in which NATO was required to respond. Throughout the training the Royal Canadian Air Force was to provide an Air Task Force to support Canadian Army training operations during the exercise which included six CH-146 Griffon helicopters and approximately 300 personnel. A CP-140 Aurora also participated in the exercise, along with a detachment of five UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters from the Oregon Army National

Town Celebrates Two New Business Ventures

Town Councillors were on hand to present New Business Plaques to two businesses in the Vermilion Professional Building located at 5125 – 50 Ave, on May 12. Paul Corbiere opened a Real Estate Centre office this past winter and has taken office space at the front of the building. His is one of ten centres in the province, and he is equipped to deal with all types of real estate transactions. Councillors also presented Meagan Balanski with a plaque celebrating her financial planning and investment business Cup of T. Balanski has been in the business for over ten years and she and her staff of three work with Aligned Capital Partners Inc.

Students did research on battery types and configurations and did field testing. Students enjoy working on the projects which makes the world a greener place by preventing waste from ending up in landfills and using clean solar energy instead of fossil fuels. The second cart to be finished was sold on May 9, 2022 to the County of St. Paul for use in their campgrounds.

In the spring of 2020, New Myrnam School and Myrnam Outreach and Homeschool Center were the recipients of A+ for Energy grant of $5000. Their project proposal was to build a renewable energy zero emissions vehicle. The school purchased a fleet of seven electric golf carts that needed a significant amount of work to get them in a running condition. The students were the leaders in the project from design to completion. Students felt that to have longevity of the carts, a frame up restoration was needed. They stripped down the golf carts to the frame, fabricated new battery trays, a steering column, reupholstered the seats, painted the frame, mounted a solar panel on the New Myrnam students with a finished cart. roof, and connected it up to the batteries. Courage Canada Trail Ride Is Back

After a two year hiatus due to COVID, Curtis Anderson and his supporters will hit the trails for the 17th Annual Courage Canada Trail Ride to Support Brain Injury on Saturday, May 28. Anderson is a 20 year Extremely severe Traumatic Brain Injury survivour following a devastating head-on collision with a bull’s head while competing in the bull riding event at the Ponoka Stampede on June 26, 2002. He spent three weeks in a drug induced coma and then spent a week short of a year in therapy learning how to walk, talk, regain the use of his left arm and basic life skills. Over the past years Anderson has continued to make improvements in his recovery, all the while working to help others enduring similar injuries. “After 20 years, I know the bottom line; that there is no such thing as I can’t with anything you want to do in life,” commented Anderson. Anderson also speaks to schools, and various public events throughout the province and Western Canada.

Vermilion Public Library Holds Seed Swap

The Vermilion Public Library hosted a Seed Swap on May 14. Programs Coordinator Sheila Heit created an opportunity for local gardeners to hear a presentation, plant a sample tray and then mix and mingle while they exchanged various seeds to try at home. Ash Morrow, owner of Grower’s Blend seed company near Morinville focuses on sustainable garden seeds, heirloom and open-pollinated varieties grown in the prairies, spoke to the roughly 20 participants about her business and the Northern Seed Library collective for the first portion of the afternoon, then was available to chat with guests while the seed exchange took place. During the swap, participants were given the opportunity to pick some new seed varieties, share their favourites, and connect with other local gardeners. Gardeners were invited to bring vegetable or ornamental seeds, seeds they just purchased, heirloom saved seeds and extra plants from seed, or bulbs, tubers and cuttings. the organization, including several Fathers of Confederation. While its influence has decreased over the past few decades, in the mid-1920s it was still going strong. This was evident in the fact that Vermilion, then only a few hundred people in size, saw its population balloon to 5,0 0 0 people when an Orange Celebration was held on July 12 in the community. Orange Lodges from Lashburn, Saskatoon and throughout northern Alberta were making the trip. Plans were in place for a massive parade that would run through Vermilion to the exhibition grounds. The Vermilion and the Wainwright bands, as well as bands from Edmonton, would be taking part in the parade as well. There would also be several

pr o m i n e nt s p e aker s at t h e eve nt and special trains would carry visiting lodges and their friends over the CNR from the east and the west into the community. Unfor tunately, when the big day c ame it was a d ay of c lou d s an d rain with few breaks of sun coming through. That didn’t seem to stop anyone from enjoying the day, or the massive parade that had been scheduled for everyone’s enjoyment. The parade was headed by “King William” and his white horse, while the bands followed behind. After the parade, a special sports day was held and baseball games were played bet ween the communities with Vermilion dominating on t h e d i a m o n d eve n t h o u g h h e av y downpours halted the games twice.

Vermilion would win 8-3 during one game, and 2-0 in another. The Laing sisters from Edmonton conducted Irish and Scottish dances for the crowds, and Reverend Cross gave an address outlining the aims and objectives of Orangeism before he had to abandon the rest of the program due to rain. Alberta Government Funds College Enrollment Expansion

I n a m e d i a eve nt at L a ke l a n d College, the Alber ta government announced an enrollment expansion program for three nor theastern Alberta colleges. The program will provide funding for roughly 400 seats in seven programs between Lakeland College, Portage College and Keyano College. With fund s totalling almost $ 4 million between the three institutions, the programs benefiting from the funding include healthcare aide training, practical nursing, animal health technology and computer programming. Lakeland College will be receiving $990,000 to enhance the seating available in their Animal Health Technology and Healthcare Aide programs.

The Alberta at Work initiative originally aimed to create 7,0 0 0 new seats in high- demand programs across the province. In c o ll a b or at i o n w i t h p o s t- s e c o n d ar y institutions, the initiative will

exceed this goal, creating almost 10,0 0 0 seats without going over the initial budget of $171 million. In rural areas, the availabilit y of post-secondary education and job opportunities in high demand fields like health care are instrumental in retaining a workforce and sustaining the local economy. “I want to thank the post-secondar y in st itut i o n s for wor k ing wit h our government to make Alber ta at Wor k a su c c e s s. Over 50 people gathered at the Regional Center the morning of May 12 to celebrate the success of the 14th Annual Rotar y Garage Sale. With almost double the donations this year and the help of approxim ate l y 15 0 vo l u n te e r s , t h e s a l e raised $40,600 in three busy, funfilled days. This year’s volunteers included some Friends of the Rotary Club, the Vermilion 4H Outdoor Club, the staff of the Vermilion Outreach School, staff and students from JR Robson High School, the Fire Department, and the Minor Hockey U18 team, who provided over 100 hours of the roughly 1400 hours in volunteer time.

Since the sales began in 2008, the project has raised $232,826 to invest straight back into the community. To those who supported us by shopping and those who made generous financial contributions. To our Rotary members, Honourary Members, Rotary spouses and family members who dedicated so many hours to this project. To the Vermilion Minor Hockey U18 team, under the leadership of Mrs Janice Jackson, who so generously gave us close to 100 hours to assist with venue set-up, donation pickups, sorting, and loading assistance during the sale. To our other youth partners - Vermilion 4H Outdoor Club, JR Staff & Students, Vermilion Outreach School Staff- for assisting with receiving & sorting donations. To our many Community Friends of Rotary for ALL your help with set-up, merchandising, selling and loading during the sale, and assistance with packing-up. In particular, we appreciated partnering with the Vermilion Fire Department to assist us on Opening Night, packing our leftover trailers and returning tables at the end of the sale. To community members for your generous donation of snacks and goodies to feed our volunteers and to Cornerstone Co-op for the donated coffee service. To the Town staff, Vermilion Agricultural Society and Vermilion Curling Club for your support onsite, as well as the many providers of tables for our sale. Thanks to the Vermilion Agricultural Society for allowing us to use the Heritage Pavilion for additional selling space. To RE/MAX Prairie Realty, Christina’s Home Furnishings and the Vermilion Fire Department for the generous use of your trailers. To Lindsay Everest who drove one of our trailers to our Leftover Partners. To our “Leftover Partners” for graciously accepting our unsold items so that they too may benefit from the donations to support their good work in our communities. Our sale proceeds have now exceeded $40,600 before expenses! As this year’s Garage Sale Signature Project, the Vermilion Fire Department has received the first $5000 of sale proceeds toward the purchase of a drone. It has further been agreed the Club will support the full cost of the drone for the Vermilion Fire Department. We are so very grateful to our community for supporting our Rotary Club’s many fundraising efforts!

concerns and ask questions about the five areas of strategic priority that the Town has identified. Councillors spent time with participants explaining the categories and discussing various aspects of each one. People were asked to identify their level of priority

Vermilion Elementary School News

Dental Hygienist, Suzie Walker paid Kindergarten a visit. Through fun and interactive demonstrations, she taught them about how to properly care for their teeth. Suzie brought her skull friend with her to teach about brushing and flossing. He was a big hit. Kindergarten would like to thank Suzie for visiting them. Also, a big thanks to Dr. Joe De Girolamo of Vermilion Dental for providing each student with a dental care kit to take home. Students and staff were very excited to have their first full school assembly in the gym on May 4 (I guess the force was with us). We started with the Land Acknowledgement and the singing of O Canada. Mrs. Tomkins informed us that students read a total of 869.4 AR points in April, for a total-to-date of 10 408.3 points. We congratulate Joy Freeman (division 1) and Maleah Eyben (division 2) on being our top two readers. Mr. Haslehurst shared his

picks from the Golden Book Club. Mrs. Moses spoke with us about our May virtue of citizenship. Mrs. Joa acknowledged those students who dressed up for May the Fourth and Hats on for Mental Health (May 3 at our school) and Global Developmental Delay (May 2) Dress up Days. There were many Star Wars characters as well as other space/alien creatures in attendance for our assembly. The Grade 6 students were excited to finally be able to sit in chairs for this assembly. Ms. King led the students in the finale song for the spring concert. On May 9 and 10, VES had the opportunity to participate in a financial education program through Money Mentors. The program integrates age appropriate money management topics like spending plans, savings, credit with fun activities, and games ensuring students are engaged. With every subsequent grade level, they build on new money management topics, keeping students continually interested while learning the fundamentals of

personal finance. The programs are aligned with the Alberta curriculum and presented by university students. Each class in VES had a Money Matters presentation. Grade 1 students learned about the names of coins and their value. They discussed how they can earn money (chores and jobs), what they can save and spend their money on, and ways they can share money they have earned (donations). Students enjoyed talking about what they were saving their money for. Some are saving for lego, the Vermilion Fair, Nintendo Switch, and many other items. The Grade 2 students learned about the differences between a need and a want. They also learned about Canadian money symbols, coins, and bills, and how they can use these to pay for items that cost a variety of amounts. The Grade 3 students learned about goods and services and how they can be smart shoppers by comparing prices at different types of stores such as grocery stores, convenience stores,

They also learned that there are pros and cons to every payment type available to people today. The Grade 6 students went on a little shopping trip with a $200 budget. They quickly learned how expensive things were and that they have to prioritize what they need to spend money on. Also, they learned that sales are not always better and not to spend money emotionally when being influenced by others. Expensive items do not always mean they are better than others. This week the Grade 3 class, the Grade 4 class, and the two kindergarten classes were fortunate to have their swimming lessons/fun swims. Next week, it is Grade 1 students who have a turn at the pool. Students at VES particularly love getting this opportunity. We thank all the swimming instructors who make this happen. Puddles is 1-year-old domestic shorthair, she is spayed and has the softest fur you will ever feel. Puddles is a sweet, loving, playful and quiet cat who has been in the shelter since Valentines Day. She enjoys getting chin, cheek and but scratches. I am very loving and enjoy receiving attention. I am not a fan of being picked up and held but if you're sitting down I will come over to cuddle you.
