Excitement and nerves filled the backstage of the Alumni Theater as the Vermilion Dance Association (VDA) students got ready to put on their year end recital on Saturday afternoon. With the valued leadership of the Association’s instructors the dancers were all smiles once they hit the stage. The audience was treated to a variety of dance styles, including Hip-Hop,

Ballet, Acro, Tap, Jazz and even Musical Theatre. VDA is a non for profit organization that is committed to offering enjoyment and quality dance experiences to its dancers.

Association President Kyla Smith is very thankful for the successful year, “It was so exciting to get these kids back on a local stage. Some of these dancers have been waiting their whole dance career to get on stage. Each dancer put their heart

Town Council Declares Volunteer Week

Vermilion Town Council began the second half of its first year together with a regular council meeting on April 19.

The Council proclaimed the week of April 24 - 30, 2022 as National Volunteer Week.

Councillor Joshua Rayment took the Oath of Office as Deputy Mayor for the months of May and June 2022.

The Orphan Well Association also presented to the council regarding Tenwell Site #1, the orphan well in Brennan Subdivision. A brief history of the well, the work that has been done to date and the planned work commencing this spring were given to council.

Council meetings can now be attended in person at the Town Office, or watched through the town’s YouTube channel.

The next regular council meeting is May 3 at 6 p.m.

Rotary Club Aims To Serve Community utives, Committees and Club Members.

Members are encouraged to participate in any way that they feel comfortable, whether that be just helping out on projects that they are able to, or being part of the executive of a club, or the chair of a project committee.

Rotary allows clubs to build their clubs in ways that best serve their organization, so not every club’s structure looks the same.

The Vermilion club has a yearly Executive, including a President, Past-President, President Elect, Treasurer, Secretary, Youth Chair, Foundation Chair and a Sergeant at Arms. Many people serve on the executive for more than one year (which runs from July 1 to June 30). In the case of the Vermilion Club they have had the same Treasurer for over three decades, as the club’s longest serving member, Eugene Wasylik (1974) has filled the role since the 1980’s.

While the Vermilion club has contributed to Vermilion’s growth and community spirit in many ways over the years, they have not done it alone. On many projects, the club

has had the benefit of outside ‘Friends of Rotary’ helping make events successful.

Friends and family members donate their time to help get things done along with other community groups.

Perhaps one of the most well known endeavors of Rotar y is the International Youth Exchange program.

Established in Chicago Ills. in 1905, Rotary International consists of over 46, 000 clubs throughout the world. The Rotary Club of Vermilion has been serving the community for 67 years. Chartered in April of 1955 the club has participated in numerous local community enhancement projects as well as many International initiatives.

Not only do Rotary clubs look to engage in serving their local communities, the organization has a priority of fellowship and goodwill. Clubs are encouraged to connect with fellow Rotarians worldwide, through collaboration on international projects and district, zone and international conventions and gatherings. Working together worldwide with projects like End Polio Now has allowed Rotary to make a difference throughout the globe. Like many service clubs, Rotary partners with other organizations to get projects accomplished, both Internationally and locally.

Rotary has seven areas of focus in their aid efforts, peace and conflict prevention, disease prevention and treatment, water and sanitation, maternal and child health, basic education and literacy, economic and community development, and sustaining the environment. When clubs are initiating a local project, or joining into an international one, they will look at which areas are being served by the project’s goals.

Clubs meet weekly, and many members are also part of district committees and projects. Vermilion is part of Rotary International District 5370, which covers a geographical area covering three provinces and two territories. There are ample opportunities to get to know members from Vermilion’s Curling Team of 2019 at District Event in Grande other clubs all over the world.

This spring has been slow in coming.

It seems we are experiencing a dr y and cold fourth winter. We have all been through a lot, so baking up a treat seems perfectly justified. Enjoying Banana Cream Pie is both decadent and comforting. When you make it yourself, there is far less sugar than commercially prepared products. To

reduce sugar, all of the sugar can be substituted for monk fruit sweetener, which has many healthful benefits. Here is a yummy recipe. For best results use 2% milk. Using a graham crust is easy, but you could also use a regular pastry crust as well.

Musk made it clear that this robot is not a household unit, but they will sell to anyone who wants one. “It’s intended to be friendly, of course, and navigate through a world of humans, and eliminate dangerous, repetitive and boring tasks,” said Musk during an interview with CNBC reporters. Currently, the complete list of tasks that this robot will be able to perform at launch has not been made available to the public. However, through speculation, one could infer that it might be able to clean up clutter around the house or do dishes, make food, even go pick up groceries.

Of course, it is highly unlikely that this robot will have all the functionality that users will inevitably want, however it will be a very solid first step towards a world with robot assistants.

It was nearly a ver y bad day for Ve r m i l i o n w h e n a fire broke out at a l i ve r y b a r n i n t h e early hours of Sept. 29, 1922. The fire was discovered at 1:30 a.m. by Norman Ganton, an employee of the CNR who was on his way home from work.

He quickly entered the barn and woke up William Johnston who had fallen asleep at the premises and then the two men found their way out of the barn amid the thick smoke. Johnston would lose $40 in cash and three

Two Wheels That Move the Soul My brother recently purchased a handsome Harley Davidson. It’s his pride and joy. He keeps it safely tucked away under lock and key until he needs to slip away from everyday toil and send the cares and worries of life tumbling into the breeze that whistles past his ears. I understand. There are few things better than swinging onto a motorbike and hitting the open road on a hot summer afternoon.

Back in the day, I used to ride one myself.

Surprised? Well, it’s quite true. There was a 250 Suzuki trail bike that took me on many grand adventures, and then, for a while, I owned a street bike. A black leather jacket and sparkly, red, full-face helmet were part of my constant attire. It came complete with a black visor that, when opened for conversation’s sake, looked for all the world as though I survived, somewhat like Darth

The wind was calm but within three minutes of the alarm being raised, the barn was a mass of flames and the roof collapsed to the ground as flames began to leap into the air.

Fire Chief O. Burns and his men began to fight the fire to the best as they could, while rescuing the nine horses inside. Unfortunately, none of the horses would make it out alive.

One of the horses belonged to the barn owner A.H. Iverson, while the other eight belonged to farmers in the area.

The fire soon began to spread to other buildings and with the Alberta Hotel only 40 feet away, it began to

become scorched by the flames. The fire brigade worked for an hour to save the hotel as if it caught fire, the rest of Vermilion would have been at risk of destruction. Thankfully, the fire was put under control before it could, saving Vermilion from a terrible fire that would have been devastating.

Many old men in the commun i t y c o m m e nte d o n t h e o d d c o i n cidence that the first Alber ta liver y barn that stood on the same spot as the destroyed liver y barn was also destroyed by fire 14 years previous.

In all, there would be about $13,500, or $218,500 today. Most of the cost of the damage was focused on the

barn and its occupants, but the Barr a n d Wo t h e r s p o o n ’s m a c h i n e a n d blacksmith shop was also destroyed.

The home of Iverson was par tially destroyed in the fire, and the Alberta H o t e l s u f f e r e d a b o u t $ 1,1 0 0 i n damages because of scorching and broken windows. Most of the fire loss was covered by insurance.

What are the symptoms?

They usually aren’t serious, but they can sometimes lead to other problems.

What causes varicose veins?

Varicose veins are caused by weakened valves and veins in your legs.

Normally, one-way valves in your veins keep blood flowing from your legs up

April Showers Bring May Flowers

Did you know that the saying “April Showers Bring May Flowers” is almost 500 years old? Thomas Tusser lists it as advice to farmers in the book A Hundred Good Points of Husbandry in 1557. It is actually a message about patience and is a reminder that even unpleasant experiences (heavy April rains or snow as the case in Alberta this year) can have enjoyable results (May flowers).

Here are a few flowers to start watching for next month. Daffodils which are fairly hardy and pest and disease free flowers. They require little care and will

Five Tips For Taking Care Of Rose Bushes

Submitted Roses can easily become the star of your garden. While the climbing varieties are tricky to care for, rose bushes present less of a challenge. Here are some tips for taking care of them.

1. WATER THEM SUFFICIENTLY Roses need to be watered on a regular basis, especially in the spring. Do so early in the morning and apply mulch to help the soil retain moisture. Water the base of the plant to avoid getting the leaves wet.

2. FERTILIZE THEM SPARINGLY Rose bushes don’t need to be fertilized every year. However, if the soil is lacking in nutrients, you can apply a natural, nitrogenrich fertilizer in the spring to stimulate new growth. In July, opt for a phosphorus mixture to promote flowering.

3. PRUNE THEM ANNUALLY In spring, remove branches that are diseased, damaged or growing inward before the

buds open. Keep healthy canes, but cut them back by about a third of their length.

Always prune just above a bud that’s pointing outward from the plant.

4. REJUVENATE THEM PERIODICALLY Rose bushes benefit from being severely pruned back every five years or so. This is an effective way to rejuvenate the plant and encourage new growth.

Identify a few older canes and cut them just above ground level.

5. CHECK THEM FREQUENTLY Rose bushes are susceptible to diseases such as powder y mildew, rust and black spot. They also attract a number of harmful insects including aphids, caterpillars and beetles. Inspect your plants regularly and treat them as needed. Find everything you need to care for your rose bushes at your local nursery or garden centre.

More and more men are filling these positions, so think outside the box when celebrating them.

I think most people do not expect a huge party or get together, and I think the most important part of the day is just to say thank you. The Benefits Of Volunteering In Schools

The nation takes a week every year to acknowledge the thousands of volunteers in Canada who spend time giving back to their communities. Often the word volunteer brings images of citizens helping those less fortunate, like people in third world countries, perhaps community members who struggle to make ends meet, or who have been faced with a catastrophic event, like a flood, or a fire.

But not all volunteering is done in response to a negative situation or event, a great portion of the volunteering that takes place is done to support a community event or organization in an effort to build community cohesion and spirit.

Whether they be parents or community members, volunteers in schools definitely contribute to the building and strength of school families. Most volunteers at schools are parents, siblings or grandparents of a student or staff member, or staff members themselves, but there are some who just like to give their time to a local school, maybe it was their alma mater, or they just like spending time with kids, whatever their reasons, schools appreciate their time and effort.

For a parent, how they volunteer for their school communities will change over the twelve years they are in the education system. From classroom helping (photocopying, reading to children, helping with lunches, field trips, and class parties), and track and field day help in the younger years, to coaching sports teams, and helping organize graduation celebrations, awards nights and other school wide events as children get older, the roles for parent volunteers are endless. Parents often

are the main organizers and workers at concessions for sport tournaments in rural schools, and do fill every required role, from the scheduling and volunteer recruitment, food preparation and serving, to the clean up, grocery shopping and assurance that food is being served within provincial health regulations.

Many graduation celebrations wouldn’t happen without the extra unpaid time and effort of not only the teaching staff but several of the graduating classes’ parents also.

So why volunteer in a school? Well, first as a parent, think of the valuable lessons you are instilling in your children when they see you being a part of their school family. When working in elementary schools, I can remember how excited students would be when it was their parent’s turn to come do things in the classroom, or go on a field trip with them. Not only were they proud to show their mom or dad off, but excited for the time they got with them.

When a parent is able to be par t of their child’s school community, they are showing their child they are a priority in their life, and it contributes to their well being and their school.

At the higher grade levels, some students might not be as excited to have their parents in the building interacting with their teachers and their friends (fears of embarrassment and ‘checking up’ on them), but they do know that without parent involvement in tournaments, field trips and major events like hosting Provincial sports finals would not be possible. They might not say thank you or even admit they know their parents in public, but those important lessons of priority and caring are still being instilled.

Volunteering also benefits a parent or family member on personal levels too.

Many parents who take on projects and roles in a school discover strengths and talents they may not know they have had. For some parents through the school year, school events are important social interaction oppor tunities, the time with adults can prove invaluable. Spending time in a child’s school community can help build connections with their teachers and support staff and lets families build strong ties and relationships with other school community members.

One local principal is very grateful for the volunteers in his school. “Volunteers are essential in not only the operation of our school but in creating a sense of community. Our parents are involved not only in classroom situations as volunteers (pre-covid) but as coaches, picture day helpers, parent council members, concession workers, and fundraisers. The connection between student-parent and the school is much deeper when stakeholders are invested with their time and passion.

Our school is incredibly for tunate to have such a dedicated and suppor tive group of parents that have always gone above and beyond any expectations, we could have. It fills our hearts when we are having an event where alumni often come back to cheer on

the students and the moment there is a need for someone to stack chairs or fold mats, we see alumni, parents and students volunteering without being asked to help make the event get done.

That is what community looks like and we are blessed with an abundance of it in our building.”

The onset of the pandemic of course changed the face of volunteering in most settings, including schools. In conversations with parents who had to take a hiatus from being able to help in the school through the home learning phases, many are grateful to be able to be back in the school interacting with the students, staff and other parents. While things like concessions at sporting events are not happening anymore (for the present time anyway), there are not as many roles for parents of the older students to fill. For some school communities, the volunteer base has also unfortunately shrunk due to the pandemic and some families are unable to help out anymore, but for others there are parents with a renewed energy for school spirit, community and growth. While the schools in this area did their best to help students and families feel connected and stay informed through the pandemic, sometimes the best connection is in person.

Farming Frontiers ‘70 Did you see this race? It was called the Great Combine Race- Farming Frontiers ‘70 and was held by John Deere on February 12th back in the 70’s. An advertisement for it was discovered earlier this year, and the Voice would like to hear from anyone who remembers it. Judging by the date of the event, it is believed to have occurred during the Winter Carnival that year. If anyone has any recollection of the race or the films, please contact Dawn at the Voice office.

Perhaps you volunteer because others set that example for you and stated that being a volunteer was an act of good citizenship and essential for living in community.

Perhaps it was a friend who asked for your help with a community project. Perhaps you

Whatever the reason you volunteer for, our community is better for it. It also benefits your own health and wellbeing, as well as your sense of belonging to something greater than yourself.

Remember a time you volunteered and how you felt when the project was completed? I recall helping to build a new playground structure in this community.

How exciting it was to see the people come forward to participate on the day of construction. How satisfying it was to see our work at the end of the two days with the structure in place. We all walked away knowing we had a part in improving our community and a play area that children would spend many

Another group I volunteered with in the past, assisted with the grounds clean-up each day during the Vermilion Agricultural Fair in exchange for a donation for our own projects. As a result of this partnership, over 60 volunteers in the community were recruited to assist with grounds clean-up at our largest community event and both organizations benefited by the collaboration of the efforts. From that experience, I still cannot walk past a piece of garbage!

When we volunteer, there is a sense of community belonging and community ownership that builds up within us. We are genetically wired for human connection and belonging, and volunteering helps us build on that as well. During this month of April in recognition of our volunteers, thank a volunteer and look for the places you can assist through volunteering, even if it is for a limited time. The efforts from many volunteers makes the load lighter for all, and our community a better place to live, work and play.

I had a National Geographic poster of “Ice Age Mammals of the Alaskan Tundra” on my bedroom wall when I was a kid. It showed herds of prehistoric muskoxen, horses, wolves, lemmings, bears, lions, mammoths, camels, saber-toothed tigers, mastodons and humans marauding across a vast, grassy expanse 12,000 years ago. The muskoxen, bears, wolves and lemmings still live in Alaska. The lions, camels and horses moved to other parts of the world where the climate suited

them better. The saber-toothed tigers, mammoths and mastodons went extinct.

When archaeologists found the frozen remains of these animals, they dug deeper and uncovered the fossils of duckbilled dinosaurs from millions of years earlier when conditions were hot and tropical.

Ear th’s climate is always changing. Volcanoes, bogs, soil and animals exhale greenhouse gases, and plants and the oceans absorb them. Since industrialization, human burning of fossil fuels has emitted greenhouse gases faster than the natural environment can sequester them.

Climate models predict how changing greenhouse gas levels will impact future global temperature and precipitation patterns.

Climate models resemble economic models – both are constantly being tweaked and improved as better data becomes available, and both are subject to “noise” that temporarily obscures long-term trends. Economic forecasters consider historical and current data about an industry and the larger economy to predict future trends. Unforeseen shocks like BSE or a pandemic cause significant short- to medium-term disruptions that might make people think the economic model is broken. But over time, long-term trends shine through (e.g., trends towards agricultural consolidation with fewer and larger pharmaceutical and equipment companies, farms, feedlots, packers and retailers). Similarly, volcanoes, solar dimming or cyclical El Nino or La Nina weather patterns can temporarily obscure long-term climate trends. Even if we don’t like where trends are pointing, understanding them can help us respond appropriately.

In 2020, Agriculture and Agri-Food C a n a d a r e s e a r c h e r s Ve r n B a r o n (Lacombe) and Gilles Bélanger (retired) co-authored the “Climate, ClimateChange and Forage Adaptation” chapter in a book called “Forages: The Science of Grassland Agriculture, Volume II (Seventh Edition).” This chapter covered a lot of ground, but here’s what stood out for me.

By the middle of this century, climate models predict that Canadian provinces will

average 1 to 3oC warmer than now. That doesn’t sound like much, but there’s more.

Warmer air will mean warmer soil, which may benefit some plants but stress others.

Weather variability will also increase.

Warmer air and ocean currents can alter jetstreams and precipitation patterns. B.C., Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada are predicted to generally become wetter, with more of their precipitation coming in heavy rainfall events during the growing season. The prairies are expected to see less precipitation, with most of it falling in winter and spring. The growing season will be hotter and drier, with perhaps two weeks of temperatures over 28oC instead of one. Canada will have more frost-free days, and grassland areas are predicted to gradually expand further north and east into areas of the prairies and Ontario that are currently forested.

Carbon dioxide is a nutrient for plants, so higher CO2 levels can help plants grow and use water more efficiently. But if temperatures are too high, and/or moisture is limiting, plants won’t be able to take advantage of the elevated CO2. Overall, forage productivity is predicted to increase in Eastern Canada and decline on the prairies.

But in an ironic twist, “global warming” may increase the risk of winterkill. Take alfalfa as an example. While having proportionally more spring moisture may improve alfalfa germination in Western Canada, a warmer, drier growing season may make it harder for those seedlings to establish healthy roots and survive long-term.

BULL BREEDERS Continued from page 14 This will make it more important to ensure that alfalfa persists well in established forage stands. But if warmer, drier conditions mean alfalfa is the only green forage remaining in late summer and fall, grazing pressure may increase.

Overgrazing weakens alfalfa and makes it more prone to disease and winterkill.

Less snowfall across the country could leave the crown of the plant unprotected, and further increase the risk that alfalfa will die out of the stand. Periodic warm spells in winter may cause alfalfa plants to lose their dormancy and then fatally freeze if colder winter weather resumes.

These aren’t new problems, but climate change will make them bigger, and will

also make appropriate harvest and grazing management practices even more important than they already are.

I had hoped that these challenges could be solved by taking forages that already grow in warm, dry places (like the southwestern US) seeding them in Western Canada, or by seeding forages from warm, damp places (like the southeastern US) in Eastern Canada. But that won’t work. Plants are highly sensitive to daylength. Perennial plants that grow well further south where daylength is more uniform throughout the year may not survive further north, where days rapidly become much longer in summer and shorter in fall. Instead, we’ll need to genetically improve the
