LandView Ag Drone School

On April 6 and 7 Robin Harrison and Bianca Weber from LandView Drones presented a two day drone school in Innisfree that was hosted by the Innisfree Agricultural Society at the Innisfree & District Recreation Centre.

The two-day school appeared to be a success with 15 attendees. Attendees had the opportunity to learn every aspect of drone management including safe, and legal use of remotely piloted aerial systems (RPAS). This included a presentation on 101 uses for farm drones, an intro to air law, site survey and pre-flight planning, best practices for emergency management, maintenance, storage, and travel on the first the day.

The second day of instruction provided attendees further detail with mapping

workflows, data processing and analysis, livestock uses of drones, and an introduction to spraying by drone, and test preparation, and their online Transport Canada Test for their Basic Certificate. The students also had a morning of fly time, where they had the opportunity to operate several different RPAS models outdoors and experience different scenarios that allowed them to gain experience and to understand both site survey and emergency procedures while they took turns as pilots and observers. ”I was struck by how much local attendance we had at this event. I give the credit largely to Carmen and Carson Kassian, on behalf of the Ag Society, who really did an amazing job of hosting our event. They were great to work with and it really shows that there are many progressive farmers in the area,”

commented Markus Weber, president of LandView.

Mother and son duo Carmen and Carson Kassian from Innisfree were impressed with the two-day course and how being drone certified will be an integral part of their farm operations.

“I thought the course was pretty good, I learned a lot and learned how to fly drones and all the rules and everything and now I can use a drone to check cows

and crops,” said Carson.

Carmen echoed the same as Carson and said, “We learned so many new applications you can do with drones, such as checking cattle, checking your fencing and your fields. You can check spray drift, assess hail damage. Depending on the type of drone you buy and the type of camera is on it, you have you can check types of vegetation,” commented Carmen.

Alberta Government Develop Wild Boar Control Program

When not being raised as livestock, wild boar are considered to be ‘at large.’

In the province of Alberta wild boar are considered an invasive species and is provincially regulated as agricultural pest when at large. Wild boar at large has been documented in 28 rural municipalities.

Wild boar can damage property, agricultural crops, pastures and the environment and can also endanger people and animals if not controlled. According to the Alberta government website, under the Agricultural Pest Act and Pest and Nuisance Control Regulation, landowners are required to control or destroy pests and prevent them from becoming established on their land.

The Alberta government announced last week that it has developed the Wild Boar Control Program to eliminate the destructive pest’s threat to crops, livestock and the environment.

Nate Horner, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Economic Development explained that wild boar at large is a threat to the animal and environ-

ment, as well as a vector for diseases such as African swine fever. He noted that the government is taking action to get rid of the menace wild boar and to help those who are affected with them before it gets worse.

It is noted on the website that landowners can help with the problem by learning about wild boar at large and the dangers they pose as well as learning how to recognize the signs of wild boar activity, and that surveillance is key to eliminating the threat of invasive wild boar in Alberta. They ask Albertans’ to repor t wild boar activity or signs of their activity.

passed away at Vermilion Health Centre, Vermilion, Alberta, March 23, 2022 at the age of 94 years.

This weekend is the celebration of Easter.

In both Alberta and Saskatchewan, we are so grateful that all the COVID restrictions have been lifted, and families can gather in both churches and homes. On the Prairies, our spring is still looking like winter, but we know that soon the suns heat will come and the dead ground will be reborn with life and new growth. Seeds that seem lifeless will be planted and spring forth into life.

What a miracle it is that each seed, plant and tree, though it appears dead now, will burst into life from an invisible life source that is stored within it. As we enter into the Easter holy week, it is a time to contemplate the reason that we have Easter. It

is that Jesus, the very son of God, died a painful death on a cross as the ultimate sacrifice for the forgiveness of sin, and in three days he rose back to life so that anyone who truly believes this miraculous event, is seeking new life and the forgiveness from sin will go to heaven. For the believer, that is filled with the Holy Spirt, is like the seed, and they will become an eternal unending life after this earthly life.

We celebrate that our ticket to heaven has been bought and paid for, we only need to receive it by believing it in our heart and speaking it out with our mouth.

Easter week comes with many traditions. There are the traditions of the church, such as Lent, Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday and Good Friday that cumulate in the Sunday morning Easter worship service. For children, coloring eggs, chocolate bunnies, jelly beans and candy hunts are often part of the Easter tradition.

Decorating with daffodils, tulips and pussy willows are favourites to welcome spring and Easter. There are also food traditions that may include hot cross buns, deviled eggs, ham or lamb with mint. Potatoes are often served in such recipes as scalloped potatoes, baked potatoes; ovenroasted cubed potatoes or potato salad.

Asparagus is in season and it is a great vegetable to serve for Easter brunches or dinners. Yellow-coloured desserts such as lemon meringue pie, sponge cake, cheesecake and angel food cake with a buttercream icing come to mind when I think of Easter.

Asparagus is low in calories but filled with nutrients. It is high in vitamin K, folate, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, pantothenic acid, and selenium. Asparagus also contains a good amount of many other nutrients such as vitamin A, vitamin C, many other B vitamins, potassium, vitamin E and

zinc. Asparagus contains fiber and the prebiotic, inulin, which is important to gut health. Asparagus contains several health promoting antioxidants. Asparagus has been highly valued as a food and medicinal plant for over 2000 years. I love that asparagus is a perennial, that regrows back every spring.

Roasted Asparagus 1 – 2 pounds of asparagus Lemon zest from half a lemon Drizzle of olive oil Salt and pepper Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Spread the asparagus spears on baking sheet or a cookie sheet. Drizzle lightly with olive oil.

Sprinkle with lemon zest, salt and pepper.

Roast for 9 – 20 minutes, depending on the thickness of the asparagus. As an alternate, the lemon can be eliminated, or the asparagus can be sprinkled with 2 tablespoons of parmesan cheese.

threaded her way into the group of sleeping animals and found the perfect spot to rest her weary bones. We watched as she flopped onto her side with a huff of air.

However, on the way down she bumped into an older bovine. The mature cow lumbered to her feet with irritation. She towered over the young heifer. Then, cocking her tail with perfect, unconscious aim, she ejected a torrent of liquid manure that spewed into the evening air and splattered thick upon the face of the young beast at her feet.

The heifer accepted this indictment on her choice of sleeping arrangements with good grace. She flapped her ears against the flow, batted long lashes to clear her vision and shook her head as the muck oozed over her forehead like lava edging down Mount St. Helen’s. Now, that’s bad luck.

“Bleah!” I muttered with revulsion—and a story was born.

My own tale of woe involved wet socks, an oven door, and an unexpected visitor.

The times when I ’ ve ex p e r i e n c e d bad luck could fill volumes. We can all

relate.

This column was hatched while walking with my brother to check on the cows. Mind you, it’s not the most pleasant of story openers. In fact, the tale borders on revolting, but it was the precipitating factor in my thought process and must be included. Hang on.

The cattle were settled for the night in a shed of deep straw. It’s calving season on the farm, and regular checks are always made. Bill shone his flashlight into their midst as we walked past the Charolais cows.

He sighed with relief. “Well, that’s the lot.

“Bye!” I yelled and slammed the door.

Then, amid a piercing fire alarm and a chorus of shrill shrieks, I rushed to save the sizzling socks.

In hindsight, this last tale is more about dumb ideas than bad luck, but so be it.

The Vermilion Public Library is home to the Traveling Exhibition (TREX) display “Figured” until the first week of May. This group exhibition of 12 works focused on the study of the figure in artwork, and features Canadian artists.

“We are incredibly grateful to AFA (Alberta Foundation of the Arts) and AGA (Art Gallery of Alberta) for funding and producing these exhibitions, allowing the library to showcase Alberta art for our local community.” stated Sheila Heit, programs coordinator for the Library.

Pickleball Becoming More Popular

Growing in popularity worldwide, Pickleball is a sport that offers year round enjoyment to it’s players. In Vermilion, a group of players meet almost every weekday morning at Lakeland College in the fall and winter and the tennis courts on the east end of town in the warmer seasons.

For those who don’t know, pickleball is a court sport that combines badminton, tennis and ping pong. It follows the playing dimensions of a badminton court, with a net a little lower than the tennis regulation height, and paddles and balls that are similar to ping pong’s. Games are

The Wild Rose Draft Horse Association (WRDHA) is a group of Draft Horse enthusiasts who banded together in 1994 with the goal of giving all Draft Horse enthusiasts in Alberta a strong presence. The Association has been holding Draft Horse sales annually but over the past two and a half years the sale had been cancelled, but the association is proud to announce that the 27th sale will go ahead this year on May 13 and 14.

Vermilion’s local pickleball players have been getting together for roughly seven years, and whomever is available to play meet at 9:30 a.m. for two hours of exercise, community interaction, and lots of laughter. During the cold months, when play happens at the college, participants pay each time they play (unless they have a college membership) and when they move to the tennis courts in the spring,

playing is free of charge. The group loves to have new people join them, and will gladly welcome people of all ages to the court. If you would like to check the game out, drop in one morning, all you need is some loose fitting clothing and clean indoor running shoes.

This past weekend six of the Vermilion players participated in the Alberta 55 plus Winter Games in Edmonton with six players from Lloydminster also.

Wild Rose Draft Horse Association member Bruce Roy is known all over North America and is what some call an

icon in the world of Draft horses. Roy was celebrated for being the longest serving volunteer for the Calgary Stampede where he was an announcer for the Draft horses for 60 years.

Roy says the Draft horse is making a comeback.

“The market for Draft horses is above and beyond, I know of a Percheron mare that sold for $90,000 and a Belgian gelding that sold for $137,500 in the United States. This sale will also offer online bidding because there will be breeders from across the continent,” stated Roy. “The future of the Draft horse has never looked better, who would have thought

they would make such a comeback, how the world turns!”

There are many flowers that will attract bees to your garden. These include, allium, cornflowers, plume thistle, cosmos, daisies, geraniums, straw flowers, sunflowers and nasturtiums. All of these flowers can do quite well in the Zone 3b growing area.

Mr. Zorniak’s shop classes and Ms. Plain’s Art classes are working together to make t-shirts that are for sale for $20.00, and sticker decals that are for sale for $5.00/ for two stickers. The t-shirts come in sizes small, medium, large, XL, and XXL. All proceeds are going

to Humanitarian Aid, for the war that is currently going on in Ukraine. Mr. Curtis Zorniak has strong ties to the Ukraine as he has family and friends still in Ukraine. He is on the committee ‘Vegreville Stand with Ukraine’ and knows firsthand, with the help of the Former Premier of Alberta the Honorable Ed Stelmach being a part of committee, the money is going to the right place.

If you wish to make a donation, the Vegreville Chamber of Commerce is also working with the ‘Vegreville Stand with Ukraine’ and can provide you with a charitable tax receipt. Mr. Zorniak is also the president of the Vegreville Cultural Association Vegreville Pysanka Festival and they have a 50/50 raffle going on right now with 100 per cent of all proceeds going to Ukraine Humanitarian needs. Town Council Changes Meeting Times

Vermilion’s Town Council held a regular meeting on April 5, here are some of the highlights.

It was moved by Councillor Paul Conlon, “That Council for the Town of Vermilion accept the proposed change to Regular Council Meetings start time and approve the amendment to change the time to 6:00 p.m.” A recorded vote was called for by Councillor Robert Pulyk, and the motion was carried.

Council also welcomed the new Director of Community Services Ms. Sarah Paterson.

MLA Garth Rowswell attended the meeting to provide a few updates to the Town. In the 5 Big Initiatives Ideas that were presented to the province, two of Vermilion’s were at the top of the list. A

land swap agreement with Emcon/Alberta transportation site to develop retail and the dredging/redevelopment of a dam on the river for recreation/tourism were put forward.

Rowswell also gave an update to the Council on ambulance response in the region, and the issues that are faced specifically when transfers from rural to urban centers happen. A concern regarding ultrasound services was sent to the MLA and the Town, the MLA has issued his response, and the Town will be preparing one on behalf of Council. Updates were also given on several issues including SL4 Housing support for Vermilion, and an issue raised by Council regarding a referendum around the Provincial Police taking over the RCMP. Congratulations to Raidyn Forsyth for being top Division 1 reader with 17.9 points and to Logan Freeman with 31.5 points in Division 2. Mrs. Moses informed us that our virtue of the month is self-control, and she sent out videos to watch on that subject. Mr. Beecroft spun the computer wheel and determined that KB won the party rocker this month. We ended the assembly with some physical activity.

Teaching Profession Commissioner Possible If Bill 15 Passes

On March 31 Education Minister Adriana LaGrange announced the introduction of Bill 15, the Education (Reforming Teacher Profession Discipline) Amendment Act. If passed the Act will create the Alber ta Teaching Profession Commission, appointing an arm’s-length commissioner to oversee teacher and teacher leader conduct and competency complaints for t h e profe s s i o n. Teac h er s an d teacher leaders will be encompassed under the process whether they are members of the Alber ta Teachers’ Association (ATA) or not.

In the press release, Minister LaGrange stated, “Alberta’s government is committed to ensuring student safety is at the centre of our disciplinar y processes. I want parents and the public to have peace of mind and know that we are improving accountability in the process, enhancing the

reputation of the teaching profession and increasing public assurance when it comes to oversight of discipline matters.”

At present, the ATA is responsible for overseeing complaints made against its active members and the registrar at Alberta Education is responsible for non-ATA teachers and teacher leaders.

Alber ta is the only province that has a dual system for dealing with c om plaints and c on c er ns reg ard ing teachers and teacher leaders.

If passed, the Reforming Teacher Profession Discipline Act will create an Office of the Commissioner which will have the authorit y to oversee the complaints received against any Alberta certified teacher. The registrar will become responsible for receiving all complaints, and the commissioner will have the authority to investigate c omplaints and take the required course of action. The teacher and

teacher leader registry, which will be starting in September 2022 will include consent resolution agreements and all decisions where there is a finding of unprofessional conduct or professional incompetence.

Minister LaGrange says the proposed approach will remove any perception of conflict of interest where a union could both advocate for and oversee disciplinar y matters for its members. This approach will not affect the Alberta Teachers’ Association’s (ATA) or the College of Alberta School Superintendents’ roles in professional development, or the ATA’s role as it pertains to collective bargaining for its members.

The Alberta Teachers Association (ATA) does not agree with the Minister’s decision however. The organization, which represents forty eight thousand teachers and leaders in Alberta has serious concerns regarding what they say are fundamental flaws.

ATA p r e s i d e n t J a s o n S c h i l l i n g states Bill 15 has three fundamental flaws. The ATA argues that The bill is a massive power grab for the minister and the government, the minister has full authority and all final say in outcomes. It removes self-governance for teachers, and no other profession in Alberta has a commissioner to govern them. Finally, Schilling points out that the model this Legislation is based on is from a province that has a history of poor relations with its teachers.

These are not the only features of the bill that the ATA has issues with, there are concerns from the organization regarding the registr y being put in place in September, and Schilling wants the public to know that he believes it is the government’s way to punish the teaching profession for not accepting the curriculum plan and distract the public from the government’s infighting.

Summer Camps Ready For Summer Season Post Pandemic

Submitted Alberta families are looking forward to a summer of outdoor fun. After two years of closed or limited programming due to the pandemic, Alberta summer camps are reopening. The Alberta Camping Association (ACA) works with camps to ensure they offer high quality programming while maintaining safety standards.

“Everyone we’ve talked to is excited to go back to camp, though with a little caution,” said Jessica Miller Switzer, Executive Director of the ACA. “Parents can ensure the highest quality camp experience by looking

for an ACA accredited camp. It’s one less thing they have to worry about.”

Since 1971, the Alberta Camping Association, a non-profit organization, has run accreditation inspections of summer camps. To earn ACA accreditation, camps must undergo a year-long audit of their paperwork, policies, financial operations, programs, and facilities. A stringent set of standards must be met to become accredited.

Lakeland College’s Neonatal Calf Research Receives Federal Funding Boost

Lakeland College’s research team is receiving a $641,800 grant from the Government of Canada. The Applied Research and Technology Par tnership grant (ARTP) is part of the federal g over nment ’s 2021 bud g et, whi c h provided $46.9 million over two years to the College and Community Innovation program (CCI). The CCI is managed by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) in collaboration with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.

“The extra funds provided by the ARTP grant will go a long way to supporting our research teams,” says Tanya McDonald, Lakeland’s interim vice president of academic and research. “We are so appreciative that the federal government recognizes the importance of our research division, both in researching efficient and sustainable agricultural practices to enhance the industry, and providing students with real-world opportunities to develop the skills they will need to graduate job-ready.”

At Lakeland, the funds will support a research project examining the effectiveness of a supplement in calves to improve neonatal health, immunity and hopefully reduce the need for antibiotics

later in life. Vitaferst will provide calves with iron, selenium, and vitamins A, D3, E and B12 at one to three days of age. Milk is a poor source of iron, and the levels of vitamins A, E and selenium supplied in colostrum may be very low so Vitaferst looks to increase these levels in calves. This project is being conducted collaboratively with industry partners: Alberta Veterinary Laboratories/Solvet, Chinook Contract Research and Vermilion area cow-calf producers.

“We are investigating whether an oral neonatal supplement will address the deficiencies proactively and lessen the need for antibiotics,” says Dr. Brenda Ralston, livestock research scientist at Lakeland and recent recipient of the Alberta Farm Animal Care 2022 Award of Distinction. “Depending on the results of our trials, we are hoping to offer producers information on the best management practices to increase profitability, animal health and welfare by increasing the neonatal health of their calves. Members of our research team and students studying agricultural sciences at Lakeland are involved in the research project.”

Their investment will also enhance Indigenous cultural services at each campus and fund Lakeland’s employment skills enhancement certificate, which bridges the gap for those needing to get their first fulltime job or move toward addi-

tional post-secondary programming.
