One of the par ts of visiting Mau Lam’s Restaurant for the past 35 years is watc hing Duc and Anh Phung’s family grow up on the wall behind the cash register, and at the same time getting to share in their customers memories and special occasions on the bulletin board inside the restaurant. Checking the wall for a glimpse of a new baby, or wedding picture has been many customers delight when picking up their dinner. While the pictures may have changed over the past three decades, Mau Lam
owners are proud that their food hasn’t over the last 35 years. To celebrate their anniversary, Mau Lam’s had a special Saturday night smorg on the 26th, and served a very full house of communit y member s some of their most popular dishes. While Anh and Duc cooked up a storm in the kitchen, the next generation of Phung’s (and in-laws) greeted people with smiles and thank you’s for the years of support. Learning About Volunteerism

Volunteering can provide so many rewards in life, and the Grade 10 Career and Technology Studies class at E.H. Walter in Paradise Valley are currently experiencing the personal rewards as they learn about volunteerism. The students are currently participating in their first project of action and are partnering with the Lloydminster Interval Home. “At the beginning of the course we created a list for possible activities we could do to help out our community, including Lloydminster, and we felt the Lloydminster Interval Home was one on our list that we felt was important to support,” commented Grade 10 Project Manager Jane Willerton. Throughout the course of the project the class is also honouring and continuing the good deeds of a woman that passed away in the community of Lloydminster. To do so, the class has been sewing and knitting bags just as the lady would and is collecting donated items to go inside the bags to distribute

to the Interval Home. “She would place the items she was donating in bags she had sewn herself, and that is what inspired us to start sewing our own bags. We are continuing her work of supporting others in need,” commented Willerton. To receive donated items to place in their newly sewn or knitted bags the class’ Public Relations’ person wrote a newsletter to send home with each of the students. They have been promoting their project on the morning school announcements and have placed bins in every classroom to collect the donations which they pick up on a bi-weekly basis. The students also called upon their local communit y to help with donations and placed bins at the P.V. Farm Service and ATB Bank. The items the students have collected will assist clients of the Interval Home when they transition into their new homes such as, personal hygiene items, as well as socks, undergarments, tea towels, hangers, notebooks, lunch kits and much more according to Willerton. Willerton stated that through this activity they have recognized the importance of volunteering to help others and that through their actions they are helping many people by giving. “ Knowing our small par t to help others makes us feel good, it makes us feel very happy for the people who are receiving our donations,” stated Willerton. The class’ teacher Kerri Nutbrown echoed the sentiment and is proud of the class’s success throughout the project, as well as the students for the effort they have put into the project. “All the students have done such a great job with this project, and it is great for them to get some sort of recognition for all the hard work. The project has been so well supported by the commu-

Vermilion Curling Club Season Ends With Mixed Bonspiel

T h e 2 0 21-2 0 2 2 Cur l i n g S e a s o n wrapped up this past weekend with the fun filled Mixed Curling Bonspiel. Twenty two teams spent three days on the ice showing off their skills, enjoying some laughs, and enjoying some good old fashioned curling fun. Saturday’s games were followed by a delicious dinner provided by Mrs. J’s Catering and some entertainment, with the event ending on Sunday with
Team Cookson taking the A Final over Team DeRoo. Curling Club President Andrew McCrae stated that even with the circumstances surrounding the beginning of the winter, the curling season was fairly successful. “Thanks to Rick McKenzie and his crew for their excellent care of the ice and also to bar manager Nicole and her staff. And of course all the volunteers who made the season successful.”

Spring is here!!! Or so the calendar says. The Vermilion Senior Citizen Centre is now open for almost everything - birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, meetings, funeral services, etc. Our membership is $20 for the year. We would like for our members to attend the Annual Meeting scheduled for April 12 at 1 p.m. Floor curling is in full swing, the play days are Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 9:30 a.m. It is a great way for meeting friends, having some fun, and share a coffee after. Bridge is also meeting on Mondays at 1 p.m. Pool players are gathering every afternoon at 1 p.m. Floor curling was a site for the Race of Vermilion, thank you to the volunteers who worked at the event. Thanks for all the racers who came to participate. It was nice to have them enjoying our facilities. Bingos are also happening at our centre, the 1st and 3rd Thursdays. Everyone is All rocks in play. One such event was a jumping sweepstakes, involving some of the top horses and riders in the entire country. Some of the horses had taken part in the recent Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. The 1960 Vermilion Fair
was the parade, which was described as the biggest the community had ever seen. At the time, Vermilion had 2,300 people but on the day that the fair came, 3,500 people lined the streets of the community. The sky was clear and the weather was warm as a record 44 floats took part, along with two bands and 100 children riding decorated bicycles down the street. The procession began at the fair grounds and moved through the streets with the Saskatoon Pony Club bringing up the rear of the parade. The Saskatoon Pony Club had 112 members taking part, and would also put on a performance later in the evening for Vermilion residents.

The dog ate it,” I heard myself answering offhandedly, to test its believability, but we didn’t have a dog. Then I tried, “Good grief! We’ve been robbed!” It was no use. Hurriedly I baked and iced another cake. With minutes to spare I hacked off the identical wedge, bolted it down and smiled a smile of pure criminal greed as he walked through the door. This last tale may have had more to do with purging a guilty conscience than a discussion of early cake baking, but it shall remain as a warning for all who hope to keep baked goods safe in my presence. The secret lies in raisins.

The increased sunshine and warmer weather are especially welcome this year. It has been a mentally brutal time for the last couple of years. For some people, it has been a time of faith growing. For others, it has been a very fearful time. Many people have experienced the pain of division created, sadly even among families. Now is the time of healing. Forgiveness is at the root of healing. While we move together in the repair of our provinces, local economy and our very souls, may we do so in the celebration of the victory over the past darkness.

When Martin Shkreli became CEO of Daraprim, he raised the price of the Daraprim drug (treats parasitic diseases) overnight. He was able to do this because Daraprim was the only drug that could fulfill its particular function at the time, and for those people who needed it, it was life saving. Brown materials include, dried grass clippings, dried leaves, shredded newspaper or paper, shredded cardboard, hay or straw (make sure it isn’t sprayed), used animal bedding, wood chips, shavings or sawdust, bread, chips, crackers, rice, pasta, dryer lint from natural materials, dust, dirt and pet hair from vacuum. There are several materials that should not go in your compost pile, including; Items made out of non-natural or synthetic materials, cardboard or paper that has a shiny or wax coating, plastics that are compostable at municipal facilities only (most home composts don’t get hot enough to break these down), pet waste from dogs and cats, meats, oils, dairy, and items from garden waste from diseased or
pest-ridden plants. Once you have your initial pile set up, don’t forget to keep it moist, not dripping wet, but a good moisture base throughout the pile. A few helpful tips will keep your compost pile healthy all season; break items into small pieces before adding them to the pile. (they will break down faster), always top your green layer with a layer of brown material to reduce the risk of pests, you can inoculate your pile by adding a shovel of fresh living soil to the mix, once your pile is finished, leave a bit of the finished compost behind to start the next pile, cover the pile to keep moisture even and deter animals, and the ideal size of a pile is between 3-4 feet high and wide.

Farmers Market Season Is Underway
The 2022 Farmers Market Season kicked off on March 15 at the Elk’s Hall, with some enthusiastic vendors and customers getting together after the season break. There are some new vendors this year as well as many returning familiar faces with homemade crafts,
food and unique home decor products. Markets run on Tuesday’s from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This year there will be a once a month Saturday market from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the hall. The first Saturday market will be on April 9.

Dear Editor “We made a commitment to Alberta parents that we would have strong foundational knowledge presented to our children, that we would have rigour in the curriculum, and we make no apologies for that.” Adrianna LaGrange, December 13, 2021. B ut L aGr ang e s h oul d d efinitely apologize for what passes as “foundational knowledge” in the draft curriculum. She should apologize, withdraw the curriculum and restart the process. The content in the Knowledge columns of the draft curriculum is not important “foundational knowledge.” Too often the content is not develo p m e n t a l l y a p p r o p r i at e. I n s o m e cases, high school topics have been pushed down into elementary. When the content is meaningless for young c hil dren, t hey will b e m em or izing nonsense for the test and then forgetting it. Pointless and stressful. Critics point out that what is deemed “essential knowledge” is too often just trivia. There are many documented factual errors, especially in Music and Social Studies. This is to be our curriculum for the next 20 or 30 years? Shameful. In addition, some of the content in the Knowledge column seems to be background information for teachers. In ELAL do students really have to memorize the criteria that define Tier 2 sight words? Teachers have been asking for clarification on how to use
the “Knowledge” columns since March 2021. Do they have to wait for the newly mandated standardized tests in grade 1 and 2 to arrive before they know what has to be taught? Time and again critics have said that there is too much “knowledge” content. To test that one must pilot the curriculum for at least a full school year in many classrooms. Instead, most School Boards declined to pilot any of it, and those that did were limited to six months of piloting. Six months! There

must be a full year of piloting to determine what is reasonable and do-able when it comes to the amount of content to be covered. This curriculum is a disaster that will harm our children, not educate them. Minister LaGrange should most definitely apologize. The rest of us should show up at, or create, a protest April 2. Lakeland Livestock Research Scientist Wins AFAC Award Of Distinction

Dr. Brenda Ralston, a livestock research scientist at Lakeland College, is the recipient of Alberta Farm Animal Care (AFAC) 2022 Award of Distinction. The announcement was made Thursday, March 17 by AFAC. The annual Award of Distinction recognizes one individual or group who has made exceptional contributions to the field of livestock welfare, through either leadership, innovation or communication. “I am honoured and humbled to be the 2022 recipient of AFAC's Award of Distinction. AFAC continues to be a strong champion of animal welfare and wellness for food producing livestock as witnessed by their continued support of this award,” said Dr. Ralston. Dear Lil After reading your letter to the editor, I felt I should reply and say I agree with you. Here at the Vermilion Voice we also feel your frustration, many times we miss events because we are unaware of them before they happen and no one lets us know. We then get calls asking why we were not a specific event, unfortunately, our response is, “we are sorry, but we were unaware it was happening.” The Vermilion Voice has always done our best to cover our community events
no matter how big or small, as we feel they are important to our community. I understand why people utilize social media as it is free (in some aspects), but like I have said to many clients while conversing with them regarding advertising their event or sale, social media such as Facebook or Google will not come and cover your event. I have also vocalized to clients that many individuals (both young and seniors) in our communities do not always have computers and do not always have social media accounts. I have tried

What a thrill it was, to have all of our students and staff gathered together for a good old- fashioned St. J pep rally!! Our Spring Pep Rally was held on Friday, March 18th in the afternoon. Students from K-12 and all staff gathered together in the gymnasium. The student council organized the event, and it was very well organized! They even made sure to stop by all of the elementary classrooms, in advance, to teach them the cheers. During the rally we prayed together, we cheered together, and we took the time to celebrate our amazing St. Jerome’s School Family! Individual students were recognized for their contributions to St.Jerome’s. There was the golf club, running club, volleyball teams, basketball teams, the yearbook committee, of course the student council, and Chase and Levi were recognized for their hard work in the lunchroom each day. It
was heartwarming to celebrate our awesome school together! Again, it seemed like a gift last week to be able to hold our elementary parent teacher interviews in person! Parents were able to come in and see their child's classroom and visit with the teachers. It's that time of year again!! It is time to start recruiting our newest Spartans!! Kindergarten Registration is right around the corner and we are excited to offer an in-person registration night. Come to St.Jerome's school on April 12th from 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. for a short presentation, tour of the school, and an opportunity to meet some of the Elementary school teachers. Registration is now open and forms can be found on our website https://stj.ecacs.ca/ or by calling the school office at 780-853-5251. Your child is eligible to attend if he/she is 5 years of age prior to December 31, 2022. Kindergarten aged students are welcome to accompany their parents on this night and check out the

The Vermilion Regional Waste Management Services Commission is a regional solid waste management organization and a consortium consisting of elected members from the municipalities in the County of Vermilion River and Town of Vermilion region. This position reports directly to a Commission Board consisting of locally elected municipal councillors within the region.

The 3 Cities 4-H Beef is actively planning for their upcoming Achievement Day on Saturday May 28th and the 897 Beef Show and Sale on June 1st. Both events will be hosted in Paradise Valley, at the 3 Cities Arena. The 897 show is an interclub event between the Kitscoty and 3 Cities beef clubs. Following the interclub show, there will be on offer 33 market steers. We welcome all to enjoy the show and appreciate your consideration for the steer sale. It is a great way to fill your deep freeze with good quality beef while supporting 4-H.
The anticipation of the year started at the Jones family farm on November 8 with the weighing in of 16 steers that averaged 770 lbs. This was followed by election of officers: President, Catherine Jones; Vice President, Dominic Bilous; Secretary, Brooklyn Paul; Treasurer, Will Teasdale; District Representative, Chloe Jones; and Club Reporter, Hannah Wright. New leaders Nevin Purser and Dean Miller were added to existing leaders Glen Jones (general leader), Tracy Demarais, Tyler Eggen, and Derek Wright. The club was responsible for hosting the Vermilion River District Communication event on February 26th. Thankyou to PV Church of God for providing the perfect venue for the event. Hayden Wright placed 3rd for intermediate behind Hannah Wright, also a beef member but representing 3 Cities Multi. In seniors, Holly Wright, tied for 3rd. Good luck to 3 Cities Multi member, Kenzie Byrne, who placed 1st in juniors and will be representing the district at regionals on March 26th in St. Paul. District curling, at the Vermilion Curling rink on March 19, provided members with an opportunity to try their skill at curling while meeting members from other clubs.
A highlight for Hannah Wright was being on the first-place team which will find her name on the 52-year-old district curling trophy. It is pretty neat to look back and see community members with their name on the trophy from back in the 70s. The pressure is on for the members to have their steers halter broke and leading for a wash and clip day at the Lloydminster Exhibition on April 23. This will be followed by participating in an all species judging competition on April 24. As a final thought, save the date for the 897 Show and Sale on Wednesday June 1.

Crop Technology Student-Managed Farm Presentations

In front of an audience consisting of fellow students, family, friends and special guests, Second-year Crop Technology students gave their final presentations highlighting the Student Managed Farm – Powered by New Holland (SMF) Unit on March 25. Presentations gave a recap of the 2021 harvest, as well as marketing crops, and the seeding plans for 2022, the Student Managed Farm projects, and field demonstration results and plan. Presentations involved information about harvest yield results, products

utilized, including seed types, pesticides, and financial summaries. Research and special projects were also presented, with the audience having the opportunity to ask questions after each presentation. The afternoon began with a special announcement from Lakeland College and the University of Alberta’s (U of A) Faculty of Agricultural, Life & Environmental Sciences (ALES). The two institutions signed a letter of agreement for graduates of Lakeland’s Animal Science Technology (AST) diploma program to be able to transfer to the Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Agriculture program offered by U
of A’s ALES. Starting in the fall of 2022, will be able to transfer their two years of graduates of any one of the AST diploma study to the BSc in Agriculture program at majors at Lakeland’s Vermilion campus the U of A in Edmonton.

Roundup Sale

Attended by buyers both in person and online, the Roundup Sale was held at Lakeland College on Saturday. Secondyear equine, purebred and commercial beef Student Managed Farm units organized the event, which saw the sale of both cattle and horses.
Cattle sold included 15 selected black and red selected bulls, as well as 7 females and three pens of commercial heifers. The equine unit sold four geldings and for the first time, two yearlings. Commercial coordinator Tom Clayton stated that they were excited with the turnout, and happy with the results of the sale.
