Vermilion Legion Thanks Local Businesses For Cemetery Enhancement

On March 9, the Royal Canadian Legion Field Marshal Alexander Branch #11 took some time to thank some local community members for their support of the rejuvanation of the Soldiers Plots at the Vermilion Cemetary. Initiated before the pandemic arrived, the project will continue this spring and summer.

Between a small government grant, support from the Town of Vermilion, and the hard work of several Legion volunteers and local businesses the work done at the cemetary includes the building of a gazebo, cleaning up and righting the headstones, and the placement of the sign honouring The 151st Battalion. This summer, there is some landscaping in the plans, some seating will be placed in the gazebo, and there is a goal to create some walkways and paths.

The Legion has also been able to acquire some land on the north side of the cemetary for more plots. A veteren’s spouse is now able to be buried next to them, and the Legion would like to make

sure the veterans and the families in the community are able to access space to do so.

Dear Editor Solidarity with Ukraine On World Tuberculosis Day Solidarity with Ukraine on World Tuberculosis Day World Tuberculosis Day is on March 24: an opportunity to reflect and raise awareness about the devastating global impacts of tuberculosis (TB). According to the World Health Organization, Ukraine is among the top countries with the highest rates of drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB).

As the current war escalates in Ukraine, we must consider the devastating impacts of war on prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and care for people with TB. Before COVID-19, tuberculosis (TB) was the world’s leading infectious disease killer. The disease causes around 1.4 million deaths globally each year, and 95% of TB deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused disruptions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of ending TB by 2030, and there is an urgent need to get back on track.

While responding to the invasion of Ukraine and the COVID-19 pandemic, we must not forget about infectious respiratory diseases like TB. Canada must reaffirm its commitments to ending TB by investing in research and development, TB Reach, and the Global Fund.

Seppala Siberians Ready And Waiting To Race

Dale Swan was glad that the turbulent weather the area had been experiencing settled down a little so that he and his team of Seppala Huskies could try something new this year. Dogsled racing for 15 years now, Swan and his team were ready to partake in the 4th

Annual Tom Ouellette Memorial Sled Dog Races put on by the Meadow Lake Sled Dog Club the weekend of February 11.

Postponed until March 5 and 6 due to trail conditions, the event is having a 5 dogs Trapper Race, something Swan had not at tempted yet. This race begins with the dogs not being

harnessed, and then after hooking the team up, the first goal is to reach the ‘line’ (100 yards) to win $1000, then race to the five-mile mark.

Swan, first introduced by the Voice in March of 2020, continues to raise and train his Seppala Huskies himself, at present he has a team of seven dogs, all of which race. Through his

company Seppala Siberian Tours just outside of Kitscoty, he continues to educate students and groups in the area about this unique breed of dog and the sport of dog sledding.

Karen Lee Lovell February 1, 1952 – February 26, 2022

Karen Lovell passed away on February 26, 2022 in Vermilion at the age of 70 years. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 46 years Charlie Lovell; daughters Sandra (Ian) Shaw, Lori West, Tracy (Keith) Maygard, and Shauna (Chris) Sikora; grandchildren Joanne Shaw, Kyle Shaw, Amanda Shaw (Shane Thorsteinnson), Tanner Shaw, Jesse (Jessica) West, Jetta Maygard, Kort Maygard, Jordan (Kyle) Lysons, and Madison Sikora; great granddaughters Staci and Karaline West; sister Gladys Holman; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

She was predeceased by her parents Edward & Vera Eklund; and brother Melvin Eklund.

A Public Funeral Service was held on Saturday, March 5, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at the Vermilion Elks Hall. Video of the service can be viewed within her online obituary (www.reflectionsfuneral.com) or Reflection’s Funeral Services Facebook Page. Memorial Donations may be made to the ALS Society.

It i s m i d M ar c h, and we are nearing the end of winter and anticipating spring. It has been a very windy year and winter since Januar y. The wind has seemed to make the winter yet colder. Perhaps it is the winds of change. We have certainty seen positive change in both Alberta and Saskatchewan with our provincial governments removing many of the COVID restrictions. It is so nice to see smiling faces again. It is wonderful to begin returning to normal. In spite of all the damage that has been done there are things we can all do to overcome. It begins with taking our lives

back, and once again enjoying time spent with family and friends. Perhaps now we will hug a lit tle tighter and laugh a little harder, fully appreciating what is behind us. As a community it is also important to support locally owned small businesses to protect these services in our towns, villages and cities. It has been such a cold winter that even some bank accounts bec ame frozen. Again, suppor ting locally owned banks, puts more power back into our forward movement. As we recover, thinking to support smaller has a bigger effect in truly returning to normal. We have all been through a lot together. Some may still have to deal with fear, anxiety and depression. That’s to be expected, considering we have all experienced living inside a science fiction psy-op movie

with a non-stop script of doom and gloom. We can help each other. We can show people a little more love and understanding. We can take time to talk, to listen and to pray. Most importantly, we can celebrate and we can choose to be happy. Every celebration needs a cake. This is a vintage recipe from happier times that my mom used to make. It’s the perfect little cake to have with someone over coffee. It is simple to make, and uses basic ingredients, I hope you enjoy it, are happy and take time to celebrate a little every day.

Raisin Spice Cake 1/2 cup raisins 1/2 cup water 1 1/2 cups flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup butter (room temperature) 1 cup sugar (scant) 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla 2/3 cup milk In a small pot boil the raisins and water for 5 minutes, and set to cool.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Into a bowl add the flour baking powder and salt, stir to blend. In a separate bowl beat the sugar into the butter until light and fluffy. Add the eggs and vanilla to the butter mixture and beat until well blended. To this bowl add by thirds the flour mixture and milk beating until just blended, stir in the drained raisins Pour into the pre-buttered 8 x 8-inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Ice with a basic buttercream icing, or add cinnamon to taste for a cinnamon spice icing.

In 1911, only six years af ter Alber ta became a provi n c e, t h e r e w a s a concentrated effort to promote the northern part of the province. For some communities like Vermilion, this was not greeted with enthusiasm.

The Secretary of the Board of Trade, J.W.G. Morrison, in Vermilion launched a protest for the community stating that even though the community was connected to Edmonton by rail, it was being neglected.

Morrison would write quote: “You will no doubt have observed that there is a persistent campaign of advertising in connection with the Peace River

and Grande Prairie countries. Speaking personally, I have nothing against this but I do know that people have come out of both districts thoroughly disgusted with them.”

The protest letter added that the government was promoting the merits of those districts, but at the same time there was a sever lack of roads in the Vermilion area for settlers to come and settle along.

Morrison would write quote: “Let me point out to you that 40 or 50 miles north of the Town of Vermilion we have a stretch of country the equal of which is not to be found in either the Peace River or Grande Prairie districts.”

It was felt that the North could take care of itself and that the building up of the area of Vermilion would benefit Edmonton as immigrants poured into the

Vermilion Soccer Association Is Recruiting Volunteers

It is time to get ready for spring and summer outdoor sports, and the Vermilion Soccer Association (VSA) is ready to get their 2022 season going.

Af ter a t wo year hiatus due to the pandemic, the VSA is in the process of planning a full soccer season starting with their Annual General Meeting on March 21.

Did you play soccer as a kid and want to keep your skills up? Or just

have a pas si o n for t he s p or t an d want to stay actively involved? Then volunteering to help on the pitch just might be suited for you. Like most youth sports groups, the VSA relies o n vo l u n t e e r s t o h ave a f u n a n d successful season. We welcome podcasters interested in using the space for recordings and it can be booked as a photo shoot and film location. I am also keen to work with other local businesses to offer stay and play package with for example any of the local golf courses. Zeta and Dominic Hickey moved from the UK to Cochrane, Alberta in 2009, while living there they owned and operated two daycares, a coffee shop, a bar/restaurant at a golf course and a business centre.

The couple also ran an AirBnB in their home.

In October of 2021 they moved to Mannville where they purchased an old church for sale in the community, and turned it into a AirBnB known as Church Stay AirBnB. “We offer a luxury BnB experience, quirky and fun. There are a lot of the original church features still here for guests to see including the vintage red carpet, original windows,the altar, pulpit, several pews and of course a church organ for the guests to play,” commented Dominic Hickey.

The BnB also has a Lil Shoppe that carries a lot of giftware, a full DVD movie library and a wide variety of books for guest to enjoy, and the Tiniest Titanic Museum in the world that is located in the main floor washroom that includes a fish tank.

The AirBnB can accomadate up to six guests at a time, as it has two bedrooms each with a queen bed and the couple states that they have a luxury inflatable queen bed which can be set up on the altar to accomadate the fifth and sixth guests. A continental style breakfast is included in the price which features the couples family recipe for the fresh baked scones,

Who Says Cows are Dull?

Are cattle merely large, docile animals lounging contentedly in a field? Do those who raise and care for them live out their days in boredom and lackluster years of dullness? Certainly not! And I’ll prove it.

The incident I present took place a long time ago with my father and a well-known veterinarian in Lloydminster. Back then Dad was establishing a herd of purebred Charolais cattle and each live calf was pretty important.

There were no fancy stock trailers in those days. The only way to transport livestock was to run them up a chute and into the back of a truck fitted with stock racks. A precarious situation at best.

On this particular day, Dad motored into town with a cow in need of a caesarean. She was forced, against her better judgement, into the confines of his pickup, where she stomped suspiciously about with a wild look in her eyes. Two large feet protruded from her hind end; the calf too large for dad to deal with.

However, giving birth was secondary in her mind as Dad slowly backed up to the chute behind the clinic. She watched warily for a means of escape. Two men stood ready to guide the beast as Dad began to raise the end gate. One minute he was joking with the gang and the next he was flat on his back in the gravel as the cow lunged heavily over him and bolted off across the parking lot.

The young men and my father lustily gave chase and were able, with some difficulty and a lot of heavy breathing, to bring the crazed bovine back to the clinic.

The wide back doors had been flung

open and a gathering of roughly twenty men had assembled in a semi-circle to prevent her fleeing again.

She took one look at them, her eyes rolled back in her head, and she rushed, with renewed fortitude, right through the middle of them and out the other side, scattering men like bowling pins as she galloped onto the Yellowhead Highway.

Cars screeched to a halt, horns blared, curses rose upon the afternoon air and the large contingent of men turned of one accord and raced across the highway after her.

There was a hotel across the road at that time and the cow dashed toward their office with a clattering of hooves, her eyes wide and glaring, nostrils flared and sides heaving. Dad’s friend, the veterinarian, who’d been watching these proceedings from the quiet repose of his window, now saw a glorious opportunity for a laugh.

spoke to the girl behind the desk.

“Do you have a room ready for Miss Bossy?” he asked. “She’s waiting at the window.” The woman screamed as she turned and beheld the demented beast lurch to a halt inches from the glass.

It all ended well. Several of her pursuers held lassoes and they deftly caught the now exhausted cow. With a few men pulling and a few more pushing, they made their way once again across the highway, amid much fanfare from passing motorists and assorted onlookers, and into the clinic where a live calf was born.

Docile? Cattle? I think not.

The Vermilion Regional Waste Management Services Commission is a regional solid waste management organization and a consortium consisting of elected members from the municipalities in the County of Vermilion River and Town of Vermilion region.

This position reports directly to a Commission Board consisting of locally elected municipal councillors within the region.

program’s goal is to add high-throughput genotyping tools to expand screening of this breeding material. In addition, the AAFC program under Graf’s leadership has built a robust germplasm pipeline Sidhu said will serve his research goals well. Breeders must provide farmers the best possible options, said Sidhu. While breeding timelines often exceed shortterm growing trends, he said farmers help target their efforts. Breeders also look at long-term agronomics, disease concerns and market trends to determine variety development goals.

“With the focus on sustainability, winter wheat may become even more interesting to growers a decade from now,” said Sidhu. “If harsh summers continue, winter wheat will fit well as a risk and drought management tool. Our goal is to be prepared with options.”

This has shif ted over the past two decades. “ When I star ted as a winter wheat breeder in 1999 the focus was primarily on how we could improve yield by focusing on agronomic characteristics and better disease resistance, particularly for the eastern Prairies,” he said. As more winter wheat acres were seeded and breeding efforts evolved, the emphasis moved to broad disease resistance packages and improved end-use quality.

Graf has focused on reducing the risk and cost of production and to increase return per acre. These goals overlap with improvement of yield, agronomic qualities, disease resistance and end-user characteristics. “ T h e var i et i e s we’ve d eve l o p e d should allow winter wheat to compete in many of the same wheat markets as spring wheat,” said Graf. “I would really like to see Canada Prairie Spring Red and Canada Western Red Winter wheat binned and marketed together, as the quality is now very similar, and it generally isn’t differentiated by the

end-user.”

Next for breeders will be to pyramid, or stack, several effective genes for each disease into new varieties, he said. This will be particularly important in beating newly evolved forms of rust. Such development takes time. It will likely be five years or more until these new varieties are commercially available. “ We have always had to improve the value proposition and make winter wheat compelling to grow,” said Graf.

“In recent years, wet falls or dry growing conditions have challenged even the most committed growers, altering the perceived value proposition and resulting in lower winter wheat acres.”

A NEW TEAM Curt McCartney joined the University of Manitoba Department of Plant Science as an associate professor of plant breeding and genetics in November of 2020. He took over the winter wheat program following the retirement of winter wheat breeder, Anita Brûlé-Babel. Most recently, McCartney has worked on the University of Manitoba breeding lines to meet the quality profile expected for the Canadian Western Red Winter Wheat class.

“For winter wheat to be competitive we have to develop milling variet-

ies,” said McCartney. “There is very little market for general purpose winter wheat, so we focus on improving grain quality.”

The university’s well-established FHB nursery benefits its winter wheat disease research. McCartney’s team works with A AFC in Manitoba and

Alber ta to share data on leaf rust, stem rusts and common bunt while collaborating with other universit y research programs in Alberta and British Columbia to exchange material in advance of registration of new varieties.

Maneka Malalgoda, who joined the U of M a few months prior to McCartney, is an assistant professor in the university’s Department of Food and Human Nutritional Sciences. Her research into how grain proteins and starch affect the use of wheat in food processing will allow the winter wheat breeding program to begin a wide range of grain quality tests at a much earlier stage of the breeding cycle than previously possible.

It will be important to make high-quality winter wheat varieties available to farmers, said McCartney. These could benefit risk management. As winter wheat generally matures three to four weeks ahead of spring wheat, this could allow it to escape damage caused by hotter, drier summers. While this may be the case, it is unknown whether mild winters work to winter wheat’s advantage, he said. They may improve survival, but mild winters could reduce snow cover and increase winterkill.

“We will continue improving winter hardiness, including researching frost tolerance genes,” said McCartney. “The key will be to

create new genetic combinations and see how they perform.”

McCartney will also compare alternative dwarfing genes to so-called “green revolution genes” widely in use. Existing dwarfing genes reduce lodging risk but also increase FHB susceptibility. Alternative dwarfing genes have reduced FHB susceptibility and should have deeper root systems. In theory they could be seeded deeper, making these varieties better for areas of low moisture.

“But these are all genetic ideas rather than breeding efforts,” said McCartney. “We look forward to seeing how they will work.”

McCartney and Sidhu are at work to map important winter wheat traits now in the wheat registration system. They aim to

catalogue available genetic material so they can focus on genetic diversity when making selections. The project will take five or more years to complete.

Sidhu said he looks forward to carrying out further work with McCartney and for the two breeding programs to grow together. He added this collaboration will produce better breeding results as the growing conditions at his Lethbridge test plots contrast with those at McCartney’s Winnipeg, MB plots.

The leaders of the western Canadian winter wheat breeding programs may have changed, but their intent remains steady.

With the assistance of new breeding technologies, Sidhu and McCartney hope to bring the crop back to into prominence.

Funding Again Up For Grabs-New Wheat Research Cluster Proposal In The Works

The Canadian Wheat Research Coalition (CWRC) is neck deep in the preparation of a fund ing application in hopes of securing another round of Canadian National Wheat Cluster funding under Canada’s agricultural policy framework, known in its inaugural term as the Canadian Agricultural Partnership (CAP).

A $3 billion, five-year federal–provincial funding program, CAP concludes in March of 2023. While the 2021 federal election delayed the release of details about the next agricultural policy framework, which will run from 2023 to 2028, the government has indicated dollars will again be distributed as part of the AgriScience Clusters program.

If approved, cluster proposals are subsequently managed by industryled administrators. Whether a wheatspecific cluster will again capture funding is far from guaranteed, however.

“I anticipate there being more cluster submissions this time around from

These include: climate change and the environment; science, research and innovation; market development and trade; building sector capacity and growth; and resiliency and public trust.

“We’re trying to find that sweet spot where the two priority areas overlap in order to meet the government’s goals as well as our goals as wheat produc-

ers,” said Comin.

With priorities set, the working group made a request for research proposals. A wide range of agricultural scientists submitted 64 in total. Multiple reviews, adjustments and selections later, CWRC will collate the best project applications and submit a complete funding application to government by the fall of 2022.

“It’s a very intense process. This is important funding and you don’t want to make a mistake,” said Comin. “There can be some really great outcomes from this research and it’s going to affect the wheat industry across Canada. We

take it very seriously.”

Comin expects some of the projects put forward, particularly those related to genetics, will build on previously funded projects. Others will be brand new and tailored to meet the evolution of both agricultural reality and government policy focus.

If the CWRC is successful in its second-round bid, a renewed cluster will ultimately benefit farmers. “Even though this is a government program and we’re trying to abide by government priorities, we always consider farmers,” said Comin. “We’re looking to fund what is in their best interest.”

Feed And Forage Breeding Project Produces Genetic Database

A research project now underway at the Field Crop Development Centre (FCDC) at Olds College employs next-generation genotyping technologies to accelerate the improvement of feed and forage barley varieties and triticale forages. The work will also produce a genetic database that will be used in future breeding work.

Led by barley breeder Flavio Capettini and molecular cereal geneticist Jennifer Zantinge, the work is aided by several additional Prairie crop researchers. Zantinge will apply marker assisted selection to improve the creation of breeding linesby identifying desirable DNA segments for traits such as yield, nutritional quality, lodging resistance, disease resistance and nitrogen- and water-use efficiency.

The process will concentrate these desirable genetics into elite breeding lines, which in turn will reduce the time required to develop superior varieties.

Whereas new variety development once took 12 to 14 years, it now takes between eight and 10. Capettini expects initiatives such as this will continue to shrink this window.

Submitted Grain silos are large, cylindrical tanks used to store livestock feed and grain high in moisture content like corn and barley.

There are two main types of silos: bunkers and towers. On both models, grain can be added to the silo using a grain elevator or auger through a hole in the top. The

fan must be turned on as soon as there’s one metre of grain in the silo. This will ensure the grain doesn’t overheat.

The temperature and humidity of the grain must be checked as soon as it’s placed in the silo. It should also be frequently recorded throughout the storage period using a moisture meter or temperature probe. Once the

silo is full, the surface of the grain should be levelled with a spreader or shovel. This helps improve ventilation and stabilizes the temperature and humidity of the grain more quickly.

There’s little to no oxygen inside silos.

This allows the grain and plant materials to ferment, a process that’s called ensil-

ing. It preserves the value of the grain until it comes into contact with oxygen.

On tower silos, grain can be unloaded directly from the bottom. However, with bunker silos, you must use a loader. If you have enough space, you can open one side of the silo so livestock can help themselves to feed.

Albertans Will See Lower Fuel And Utility Bills

Alberta’s government will stop the collection of the provincial fuel tax to offer Albertans relief from current high fuel prices.

Currently, Albertans pay 13 cents per litre in fuel tax. This change will come into effect April 1.

The federal carbon tax rate on gasoline is set to increase again on April 1, from just under nine cents per litre to just over 11 cents per litre.

“We’ve heard Albertans’ concerns about the rising cost of living loud and clear. While the federal government is set to increase the carbon tax April 1, Alberta’s government is taking the opposite approach and stepping up to offer relief. Stopping the provincial fuel tax puts money back in the pockets of Albertans when they need it most.” stated Premier, Jason Kenney.

Alberta’s government will also provide $150 electricity rebates to help Albertans pay for the high bills they faced this winter.

More than one million homes, farms and businesses are expected to receive a $50 monthly rebate for three months. These retroactive rebates will help defray the high costs that many families and businesses paid in recent months.

Alberta’s government will work with utilities and regulators to determine exact details, including rebate timing. This includes working to have the rebates applied directly to consumers’ bills.

This rebate will combine with the Natural Gas Rebate program announced in Budget

2022 to provide real relief for Albertans.

Dale Nally, Associate Minister of Natural Gas and Electricity added that, “Utility prices are in part due to market conditions, and in part due to punishing policies from the former provincial government and the federal government. As our government works hard to responsibly manage system costs, we are also working tirelessly to increase generation investments to bring new supply on to the market. As this long-term work continues, a rebate to help offset these costs for Alberta families and small businesses will help provide support when they need it most.”

Collection of the fuel tax will be paused for: gasoline – $0.13 per litre, diesel – $0.13 per litre, marked gasoline and marked diesel – $0.04.

Because the GST also applies to provincial fuel taxes, the 13-cent reduction will also reduce the GST by 0.65 cents per litre, for total tax savings of about 13.6 cents per litre of gasoline and diesel.

The government will review the collection of the fuel tax on a quarterly basis and, if required, consider reinstating collection in stages, based on the average price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) over a number of weeks. The government will not start to reinstate collection before July 1.

Alberta’s fuel tax is reported and remitted by refiners and large wholesalers and included in the price Albertans pay at the pump. The government will provide information for stakeholders, including fuel retailers, on the fuel tax pause.

Stratification is also the best way to germinate the seeds, which is creating a cold environment for the seed to lie dormant through before planting, basically, making a seed think it has gone through winter. At almost 100 years old, the LCol W.C. Craig Armory is one of Vermilion’s most familiar landmarks. Situated almost in the heart of the town, it has served community members of all ages and been home to many activity groups.

At present, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #11 owns the building, but they have come to the difficult decision that it is no longer viable to keep it.

The Legion has asked the Vermilion Voice to help share the following letter with the community; To Ve r m i l i o n a n d S u r r o u n d i n g Communities: The LCol W.C. Craig Armory opened in 1940. As a nation at war, the Armory served an essential purpose and continues to embody historical significance in the town of Vermilion today. The building was taken over in 1992 by the Branch 11 Legion; it was a fitting responsibility accorded on to the Legion. The building acted as the Legion Hall for our Veterans. It has seen many tenants; it was offered to the community as a service, and it continues to be utilized by groups like our Local Cadets and the Archery Club.

It is with profound difficulty that the Vermilion Branch 11 Legion must announce its inability to continue maintaining this property. Ongoing expenses have exceeded Legion revenue and with the rising costs of utilities and insurance, maintaining this property is no longer sustainable for the Legion.

At t h i s t i m e a n d i n a n ef fo r t to preserve history, the Legion would like to explore all options when deciding the future for our historical Armories. We believe the building remains an asset to the community, and we would like to see it continue to be adequately utilized.

This year’s theme is Growing a Climate for Tomorrow, which recognizes the effects of climate change on farming while accepting the industry’s responsibility to reduce its impact on the environment.

Climate-smart agriculture Climate-smart agriculture involves using sustainable farming practices to overcome specific climate-change challenges such as droughts and floods. There are three pillars of climate-smart agriculture: • Improve farmer productivity and livelihoods • Make farms more resilient to the impacts of climate change • Curb greenhouse gas emissions associated with growing food Implementing climate-smart farming There are a number of ways farms can apply climate-smart practices:

Farming And Climate Change Water conservation. Growing food uses up to 70 per cent of the world’s fresh water.

To avoid water shortages, farming communities need to start conserving water and harvesting rainfall by building retention ponds and salvaging rainwater from rooftops. Farms also need to use more efficient, slow-drip irrigation systems.

Soil management. Heavy rains and flooding can wash away fertile topsoil. Planting groundcover and trees, adding mulch to soil and building trenches and drainage systems can help keep soil in place.

Plant trees. Trees have many benefits for crop production. They provide shade during droughts, and their roots prevent soil erosion during floods. Tree fences trap winter snow, which improves soil moisture in spring.

Everyone in agriculture can affect how both conscious and unconscious perceptions of our industry are formed.

Perception can be defined as a way of understanding or interpreting something. It’s how we make sense of the world. Our perception is our reality.

Perceptions turn into opinions, which then turn into action.

Perceptions are formed quickly and constantly. Some are consciously for me d throug h ex per ien c e, while

others are unconscious mental shortcuts to help us deal with the volume of decisions we need to make all the time. Ever y d ay, we group peo ple b a s e d o n s h a r e d c h a r a c te r i s t i c s , including age, gender and occupation. But there is a drawback to this efficiency — it can lead to stereotyping or misperceptions. In the interest of speed, our brains will often use the first or loudest impressions to form perceptions. And it takes a lot of work to reroute those mental shortcuts to a different outcome.

This is certainly a challenge for all of us agriculture, as many of us often aren’t proactively speaking about our industr y first, and rarely are we the loudest. As a result, many people form their opinions about our industry based on someone else’s story or what they hear first. But we can change that. We can stand up for our industr y together. We can speak up with passion, honesty and conviction. We can be a part of the big food conversations, so our point of view is heard.

We can shape people’s relationship with agriculture and the food they eat.

And when we change the experience, we change conscious perceptions and create positive detours for the mental shortcuts.

It can be done. But it’s a big job that takes cooperation, passion, patience and respect for ever y voice in the conversation. We need to build lines of communication, not draw lines in the sand. Changing perceptions is a lot of work. It takes time and is often incremental. But every shift is important.

We need to be relentless. We bring experience, knowledge and passion to the ag conversation. Our point of view is important. People want to hear it. So let’s make, and take, every opportunity to share it.

Remember, perceptions are formed from an instinctual need to understand the world around us. When it comes to agriculture, we need to work together to be the source of that understanding.

BULL BREEDERS 7 Strategies For Talking With Consumers

Agriculture More Than Ever Submitted

All of a sudden you find yourself in a conversation about farming with someone who’s not a farmer — perhaps at a party or a community event. Will you be prepared?

Your approach matters! Having some strategies on hand to have a meaningful discussion will make a big difference.

Think of it as getting to know one of your customers.

Here are some things to keep in mind: Go in with a positive attitude. Most people like farmers and won’t disagree with how you farm. Research shows that, in general, consumers believe that farmers are credible sources of information.

And they also want to know more about farming and how their food is produced.

You are their conduit to learning more about agriculture.

Establish rapport. Start a genuine give-and-take dialogue. Introduce yourself and tell them a bit about what you do. Ask them about themselves. Find common ground, whether that’s where you live, that you are both Saskatchewan Roughriders fans, or have kids the same age.

Be respectful and reserve your

judgements. Remember that this person doesn’t come from a farming background.

Their perspectives and opinions are bound to be different from yours and may very well be influenced by their peers and/ or social media. They believe what they believe for a reason. Here’s a chance to find out why and have an honest discussion about it.

Make it personal. Share your story.

Most farmers farm because they love it.

It’s a passion and a lifestyle, not just a job.

Let them know about your family, your farm and why farming is important to you It ’s about engaging, not educating. This isn’t an opportunity to set someone straight. No one likes to be lectured.

Welcome their questions and answer as genuinely as you can. They’ll appreciate that you are taking the time talk with them and will look to you for more information because of your knowledge and experience.

Be conscious of the language you use. Words you may use every day as someone in the agriculture industry may mean nothing to a non-farming audience. We may take terms like tillage, heifer and crop rotation for granted, but they might not have a clue what you’re

talking about. Invite them to let you know if they don’t understand.

It’s more important to ask questions than provide answers. Find out what they really want to know. Probe for more information by asking questions.

Establish what they are really asking, to zero in on what they have questions or concerns about and why. Perhaps it’s not really GMOs they are concerned

about, but the pesticides associated with GMO crops. Learn to listen and be patient.

Most of all, it’s the conversation that’s important, not necessarily the outcome or whether or not you agree.

You’ve helped someone connect the dots between what it is you do and the food that’s on their table every day — which benefits us all.

7 Tips To Remember This Calving Season

Calving can be an exciting but challenging time. Luckily, there are some key actions you can take to set yourself — and your calves — up for success. Whether you are in the middle of calving season, or planning for the next, the BCRC has several helpful calving resources.

Here are seven tips to remember this

calving season: 1. Do not hang calves upside down if they need help breathing.

If a newborn calf requires resuscitation, put them in the calf recovery position, poke a clean straw in their nose, dribble a few drops of water in their ear or rub them vigorously. Hanging calves upside down actually makes it more difficult for the calf to start breathing. Fluid that drains from

a calf that is hung upside down mostly comes from the stomach, not the lungs, and gravity will make it more difficult for the lungs to expand.

2 . I nte r ve n e if t h e c alf hasn’t received colostrum 2 to 4 hours after birth.

Colostrum not only provides the calf’s first immune system but also has many nutrients to give calves their best start.

Good quality colostrum should be given between two to four hours after birth, but calves are able to absorb some antibodies up to 24 hours. Learn more in the video below.

3. Feed a minimum of 2L when tube feeding colostrum.

Tube feeding will cause fluids to go directly into the rumen rather than the abomasum as it normally does when calves suck. In the rumen, the valuable antibodies (IgGs) from the colostrum are broken down and will become unavailable to the calf. Feeding at least two liters allows the rumen to overflow and the calf to absorb the essential antibodies.

4. Have two tube (esophageal) feeders: one for sick calves and the other for healthy calves.

H av i n g t wo d e s i g n ate d fe e d er s prevents disease and pathogen transmission from sick to healthy calves. Esophageal feeding, also known as “tube feeding” or “stomach feeding,” is essential when a calf is too weak to bottle feed but requires colostrum or dehydration treatment.

5. Look for signs of dehydration so you can intervene early.

Being able to recognize the symptoms of disease and dehydration in baby calves is a simple and effective practice that can make a big mark on your bottom line. Being aware of behavioural cues like drooping ears, sunken eyes, lethargy and using the skin tent test can help you spot a dehydrated calf before serious consequences occur.

6. Provide clean, dry bedding at calving to reduce disease transmission.

Dilution reduces pollution! The biggest percentage of calf loss occurs in the first seven days of life. Reduce the risk of exposure to harmful pathogens by providing animals a clean, dry place to calve, with sufficient space and ensure calves receive adequate, good quality colostrum. This can reduce disease transmission and encourage a healthy immune system.

7. Don’t rely on memory. Keep track of things like calving ease, calf loss and cow temperament at calving to help make better management decisions.

Keeping track of cow behavior and other maternal qualities is important to have an accurate understanding of your herd. Tracking calf loss and aggressive mothers will spotlight a repeat problem cow if it begins to happen multiple years and enables important culling decisions to be made. You can’t improve what you don’t track!
