St. Jerome’s Supports Polio Eradication With Purple Pinkies

On February 24, St. Jerome’s School students and staff were visited by the Vermilion Rotary Club to raise awareness of the fight to end Polio worldwide.

Rotarians visited the school and dyed the students fingers purple with the same Gentian Violet dye used by Rotary International to mark children after they have been immunized from Polio. The dye stays visible for a couple of days, promoting awareness of the students' support of

children’s health worldwide.

Unable to hold this yearly event in 2021 due to COVID, it was a great pleasure for Rotarians to be able to get back out into the community to promote this worldwide initiative. Many of the students remembered participating in previous years and were enthusiastic about being able to be a part of it.

Community Support For Ukraine

With the military invasion on the Ukraine from Russian President Putin, Vermilion residents gathered for a vigil to show their support and solidarity for the people of the country on the evening of March 2, in the Legion parking lot. Approximately 70 people attended the event and prayers for the people of Ukraine were spoken and

participants shared stories and memories of family and friends.

Homeowners in Vermilion are also showing their support for the war torn country by displaying blue and yellow lights on the outside of their houses.

Russia launched its large-scale military assualt on February 24, as of Monday the United Nations has recorded at least 752 civilian casualties so far across Ukraine.

only came close to winning once. In the first game the Wainwright Bisons won 5-1, starting off the 2nd round of playoffs strong. Game two was a little more balanced, both teams fought hard and in the end it came down to a single point difference, 6 points for the Tigers, 7 for the Bisons. After another loss the Tigers were losing hope, and when it came to game 3 they gave the game away, taking a 9 -2 loss. The final score of the last game was 10-2 for Wainwright meaning the Vermilion team was finished with the playoffs, and the Wainwright players made it to

the final round. “ The boys had a great year! We haven’t made it to the second round of playoffs since 2009! WELL DONE BOYS!,” stated the Vermilion JR B Tigers Facebook page.

Banana muffins and banana bread are a great way to use up overripe bananas.

If you don’t have time to use up overripe b anana s, yo u c an simply toss them in the freezer, skin on, to be unthawed, peeled and used later for baking. Bananas have different benefits depending on their degree of ripeness.

Bananas, especially a little on the green side, contain natural prebiotics that help us absorb nutrients, such as calcium, by producing digestive enzymes. Bananas are high in pectin fiber and aid in movement through the digestive system.

Bananas are a good source of vitamin B6, vitamin C and potassium. A four-year research study has shown that the high potassium content found in foods such

as bananas help reduce blood pressure and the risk of stroke. The inside of the banana skin, or a ripe banana can be rubbed on dry skin, let dry and then washed off for a softening and hydrating home spa moisturizing treatment.

Eating very ripe bananas, those with a few brown spots, is a good remedy to help prevent heartburn, naturally. Both very ripe and over ripe bananas can be used for baking with great results. If you are buying organic bananas, then you can wash and blend the whole very ripe banana (with the top and bottom cut off) for smoothies or baking. It turns out that the brown spots on the banana skin contain Tumor Narcosis Factor, which combats cancer cells. A banana and a dairy product, such as a banana cream pie are a good combination to eat together for increased protection from ulcers and increased calcium absorption. Bananas and milk both naturally

contain tryptophan, which the body can convert to the feel-good compound serotonin. Combine them both for more feelgood hormones, such as bananas and milk, banana smoothie, bananas and ice cream, etc. After a long couple of years, eating bananas makes goods sense for both our mental and physical health. If you love chocolate, feel free to stir in 1 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips for a Banana Chocolate Chip Muffin.

Banana Muffins 2 cups flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 3/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup butter (room temperature) 1 cup sugar 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/2 cup milk 3 overripe bananas, mashed Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Into a bowl add the flour baking powder and

salt, stir to blend. In a separate bowl beat the sugar into the butter until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, banana and vanilla to the butter mixture and beat until well blended. To this bowl add by thirds the flour mixture and milk beating until just blended. Spoon into paper-lined muffin tins. Makes 12 muffins. Bake at 375 degrees for 30 minutes.

Oil Booming In Vermilion

During the Second World War, it was a tough time for many families as their loved ones were off fighting overseas. There was some good news for the area though, and it came from the huge oil producing potential of the land.

The Canadian Nor thern Railway controlled about 620 acres in the area of Vermilion and its subsidiary Cannar Oils Limited was doing good business. By October of 1943, a total of 20 wells had been drilled in the area, with another 50 planned. Half of the wells that had already been drilled were producing

350 barrels a day.

This made the area one of the top oil producing areas of the entire provinces. This was four years before Leduc #1 would erupt with an oil strike, starting the massive oil boom that would last decades for Canada.

The abundance of oil in the area was also attracting other companies including the creation of the Vermilion Refinery Company.

The Vermilion oilfield was known in oil circles as a shallow field and its oilproducing sands were located between 1,800 to 1,900 feet below the ground.

J.W. Penney, the manager of Cannar Oils had worked in South America and with his years of experience he saw Vermilion

as a place ready to boom with oil.

Chairman R.C. Vaughn would say quote: “ We are opening the wells as a war time measure of prec aution to secure an adequate supply and reserve of fuel oil for the railway’s western services.”

It wasn’t just oil that was booming in Vermilion at this time though. Apiarists were also doing very well. Vermilion farmers were jumping on the bee bandwagon and District Agriculturalist E.H. Buckingham was busy handing out package bees to farmers, providing enough for 71 hives in the area.

The high price for honey due to war time rationing had many farm -

ers looking to make some money off the relatively new industry in the area.

Barney Klashinsky was the one of the largest beekeepers in the area with seven hives, while A.G. Sinclair, the CNR agent for Vermilion, had 32 hives along the river bank.

It is likely many in Vermilion were licking their lips thinking of the abundance of honey that would be available in 1944.

Perhaps the wordplay started in the 70s when the English Leather Company created soap on a rope. It was founded on the belief that soap, left to its own devices in a dish, would become a slimy soup of sludge. They weren’t wrong. For a time, the abilit y to hang soap on a rope in your shower became quite popular. While, to begin with, it was brown, oval and aimed primarily at men who enjoyed its pleasing “masculine fragrance” it soon took on other forms. There were fruit shapes, cartoon characters, barnyard animals and even one created in the likeness of the Pope. Get it?

These criminals can take advantage of the vehicle's new keyless start systems by collecting the signal created by the key fob at start. The Criminals can then mimic this signal and use it to later unlock and start the vehicles causing

a major security concern for any F-150 owner, as anyone who is both capable and willing to steal these trucks can.

Unfortunately, this method isn't the only security breach possible with this Ford truck. Another tactic popular with tech-savvy criminals involves using a device to hijack into the onboard diagnostics port on the vehicle. Once they have access to this port it only takes a few minutes for the thieves to reprogram the vehicle to think it has been assigned to a new key; a key that the hackers already have access to.

I don’t have much to say about drivethrough vaccines. I suppose it’s no different than all the other times we pull up to a drive-through window to receive some service or other. However, it’s quite rare in Europe. In fact, I was once in France when a new Burger King was opened. People lined up for blocks to try out this unusual form of receiving food: the drive-through window—cool man.

Are you aware of all the amenities available to us from the comfort of our car? I haven’t used a pharmacy drivethrough but it seems like a great idea, especially for people that have mobility issues. However, what about a drivethrough liquor market? The merit of this one seems a bit harder to detect. Fork-

Another alternative is investing in a steering wheel lock to deter the criminals from proceeding with any plans. Hopefully, car manufacturers will be working on a solution to this detrimental flaw, but in the meantime at least these criminals seem to be somewhat limited to targeting the F-150.

Vermilion Skating Club Visits Las Vegas At Carnival

If you were at the Vermilion Arena on the evening of March 4, chances are you had a hard time finding a parking spot. The Vermilion Skating Club took a couple of hundred of their closest family and friends on a whirlwind trip to Fabulous Las Vegas with this year’s skating carnival.

Skaters of all ages showcased their skills on the ice with dazzling costumes and wonderful routines to a wide range

of music from Frank Sinatra to Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson.

With guest skaters from Edmonton and Lloydminster also performing, the carnival let the skaters show off the hard work they have put in this season.

Skating Club President Brooke Wasylishen is very proud and thankful of all the hard work and dedication of the skaters, their families and the coaches for making the carnival a success, “It is great to see so many people here supporting the skaters” she stated.

18th Annual Cutter Rally

The Lloydminster Exhibition Centre along with the Alberta Carriage Driving Association-East-West Chapter held the 18th Annual Cutter Rally to raise funds for local cancer patients, on February 26.

Participants in the event were eligible to win the grand prize, which was a brand new two-seater sleigh, or the winner could decide not to take the sleigh and he/she could choose to take the harness package valued at $2500 or take the cash prize of $2000. The grand prize winner for this year’s event was Atleigh Burzinski and she chose to take the $2000

cash. The event drew in 29 Teamsters, 28 Passengers, 16 Horseback Riders and 129 Ghosthands.

Event organizer Della Wist said, “The day was very pleasant weather-wise, it was quite mild and warm. The atmosphere at the supper was awesome – people were mixing and visiting and just seemed to be glad to be able to meet up with their friends again. Kurt Price and Heather Klages were our MC’s for the night and the people absolutely loved them.”

The Cutter Rally has raised in excess of $120,000 over the past 18 years and this years total amount raised has yet to be released.

Royal Purple Vermilion Lodge #108 73 Years Of Tradition

For decades the Elk’s Hall on 49 Ave was the home of the Order Of The Royal Purple Lodge #108. For over 70 years the ladies of the Royal Purple served the residents of the Vermilion area through fundraising, teas, catering, hosting children’s Christmas parties, and supporting town organizations such as the food bank, Santa’s Anonymous, Friends of the Vermilion Health Care, Vermilion and District Housing for Assisted Living and the school’s hot lunch programs.

Formed in 1947 after Fay Park and Marjorie Logan attended the Elk’s Convention with their husband’s in Vancouver and learned about The Royal Purple. These two ladies came home and recruited 35 other women to join the worthwhile cause, and on November 18, 1947, Lodge #108 was instated. In 1997 at their 50 year celebra-

tion founding members Beth Walsh and Fay Park recalled that they really did not know what the Order was about and what the protocols were, but managed to figure it out all together with some laughs along the way.

The Elk’s were very supportive of the Lodge, and not only helped financially but also joined them in hosting events, bringing the community together with a yearly carnival and some catering functions.

Dues for membership were $1.50 when the group came together, and when the Lodge disbanded in 2020, dues were $60 a year.

For many years the going rate to have the Royal Purple cater your event was $1 for a roast beef dinner with homemade pies.

Apparantly when the ladies had to raise the price to $1.50, there was some grumbling among the community and Lodge members.

are) an important component of the Royal Purple Society, and there are many different roles that members could fill while they were Royal Purple ladies. Honoured Royal Lady, Associate Royal Lady, Loyal Lady, Conductress, Chaplin, Secretary, Treasurer, Historian, Pianist, Outer Guard, Inner Guard and three Trustee’s comprise the Officers of the Lodge and all had important roles to fill both at the monthly meetings and in supporting the fellowship of Lodge members.

Conductress’ were responsible for member induction, and hosting/introducing guests to the lodge. Chaplin’s said the prayers, and would visit ill Lodge members to support them. Outer Guard Lady’s were responsible for making sure protocol was observed, so they were responsible for locking the door when the meeting started, and enforced the password protocol that latecomers had to follow. Every lodge

also has a Historian, a lady responsible for putting the year together in a scrapbook, containing the names and roles of members and highlighting the year’s activities, while also honouring any members who passed away through the year. These scrapbooks are incredible journals of the Lodge’s great work in the communty and comradare that the Royal Purple ladies share amongst themselves.

The Vermilion Royal Purple unfortunately folded in December of 2020, but the last members still cherish the time they spent together. In a short two hour interview, Carol Beecroft and Jan Eriksen provided wonderful memories and stories of some incredible local ladies who served their community selflessly. The enjoyment they experienced of being Royal Purple ladies was evident in their laughs, smiles and enthusiam to share their fond memories of their time as members of Lodge #108.

Lakeland Rowing Club Competes Virtually

With the c hang es in the COVID health guidelines in Alberta, the Lakeland Rowing Club was going to be able to compete at the Alberta Indoor Rowing Championships in person in Blackfalds on March 5. Unfortunately, a dump of snow on March 4 causing highway mayhem throughout the region changed those plans, and the

club determined staying home and competing virtually was a more reasonable idea.

While rowing this way meant that the participants would not qualify for the medals at the competition, it did still give rowers the chance to test their training and compare their times with other racers in their categories. Six rowers participated, competing in the Open Women, Novice Senior Men and

Women, the Open Senior Men, Lightweight Senior Men (all 2 km races) and the Master’s Men (1000 metres) categories.

Lakeland Offers Innovative New Approach To Agribusiness

(Vermilion, Alta.) Starting this fall, Lakeland College will offer a re-imagined agribusiness program, one which has been updated to reflect the evolving world of business and agriculture.

“The world of agribusiness is constantly changing with many new and exciting opportunities presenting themselves,” says Geoff Brown, dean of the School of Agricultural Sciences.

“We are always working with our advisory boards to ensure that our curriculum and programs are providing our students with the latest education, one which sets them up for success in whichever sector they enter after graduating from Lakeland.”

The newly designed program will begin with a common first semester, after which students will have the option of choosing one of five specialties: production, marketing, agri-food and tourism, sustainability or finance. Previously, the agribusiness program only offered three focusses: livestock, crops or marketing. By adding the three addi-

tional streams, students will dive deeper into an area they are passionate about and graduate as well-rounded professionals equipped for diverse work environments.

In production, they will expand their agribusiness knowledge in crop, livestock or mixed farm production, while marketing will give students experience in product, price, placement and promotion. Agri-food and tourism will allow students to develop business ideas using agricultural products in innovative ways. Sustainability will centre on managing economic, social and environmental pillars to leverage long-term success, while the finance stream will have an increased focus on business and financial management.

“Our re-imagined agribusiness program will continue to challenge our traditional students who have a solid agricultural background, but will also appeal to students who have never considered a career in agriculture before. The new agribusiness streams go beyond primarily production, highlighting career opportunities across the

agriculture supply chain,” Brown says.

New oppor tunities for experien tial learning will build upon the existing hands-on opportunities, including Band in the Sand event management, farm management simulations, case competitions, industry practicums, and data driven projects integrated with the Student-Managed Farm – Powered by New Holland.

Graduates of the agribusiness program will be set up to succeed in career paths that include: • Commercial agriculture operations • Financial lending • Agricultural accounting • Feed sales • Grain merchant • Livestock buyer • Sustainability verification • Entrepreneur • Succession planning • Ag marketing • Agri-tourism and more.

They will also have the opportunity to further their studies by taking another year at Lakeland to earn a second diploma or to enrol in Lakeland’s agri-

culture technology degree, the first of its kind in Canada. Agribusiness graduates also have the option to transfer to another post-secondary institute to complete a degree.

The School of Agricultural Sciences relied heavily on industry feedback while creating the new streams and updates to the curriculum, to ensure they would be addressing current trends in the agricultural sector.

Budget 2022 Invests In Natural Resources

“To date, our $1.4 billion investment targeted toward value-added processing has led to 2,128 new jobs and $886 million in new investments,” commented Minister Horner. He added that they anticipate this funding could create more than 2,000 jobs over the entire project. “We are already past that initial estimate,” Minister Homer commented.

In the energy sector Alberta continues to implement the Natural Gas Vision and Strategy, which includes capitalizing on opportunities in liquefied natural gas and petrochemical manufacturing, and creating conditions for developing hydrogen and the plastics circular economy. With the roadmap in place the province says it has a plan to create jobs and reduce emissions and will position Alberta as an international leader in clean hydrogen. The budget provided $41 million over the next three years to the Alberta Energy Regulator to establish new regulatory frameworks for geothermal and mineral resources.

Minister of Energy Sonya Savage says that Alberta is an active player in the world’s transition to cleaner fuels.

“With new minerals and hydrogen strategies and requests for proposals for new carbon capture hubs, we are moving

forward while continuing to remain on solid ground with oil and gas- both with price and production. We are poised to be a leader in emerging fields, which will create jobs and secure our reputation as a responsible developer,” commented Minister Savage.

In the Environment and Parks sector the budget included $19 million over the next three years for continued work on the Digital Regulatory Assurance System, and Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction will receive $698 million in funding over the next three years for projects and programs that will support jobs, reduce emissions and help Albertans adapt to climate change. According to the site this includes continued investment in programs delivered by key partners, including Emissions Reduction Alberta, Alberta Innovates and the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre, plus an additional $305 million over four years will be reserved in the Technology Innovation and Emission Reduction fund for investments in future carbon capture, utilization and storage projects. The budget also allocated $75 million for operating expenses to keep Alberta’s beautiful spaces sustainable and accessible.

Preventing Wildfires Is Always In Season

While winter is a lower risk for wildfires it is not impossible and Derrik Forsythe, information officer with Alberta Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Economic Development states that we should not let snow on the ground fool us.

“Wildfires can start any time of year. In fact, we already recorded our first wildfire of the year in February,” stated Forsythe.

According to Forsythe wildfire danger is based on a number of factors, like the moisture content of fine fuels such as leaves, needles and small twigs and says that in Alberta, the hazard is historically highest in the spring months after

the snow has melted and the moisture is evaporated, and before the trees and grass begin to grow. It also says that the warmer, dryer weather and the increased outdoor activity can cause Alberta to see a spike in human-caused wildfires during the spring months.

‘We’re keeping our eyes on the spring forecast. Rain from March until the end of May can have a big impact on reducing the wildfire hazard. The majority of wildfires are started by humans. In fact last year, over 60 per cent of wildfires in Alberta were human-caused. We all need to do our part in reducing the number of these entirely preventable fires,” says Forsythe.

Wildfire season runs from March 1 to October 31 in Alberta, as such fire permits are required for activities such as residential, industrial or agricultural debris burning. As Albertans we can all help prevent

wildfires by making sure we don’t leave abandoned campfires hot, being cautious with agricultural burning and watching OHV exhausts and never throw down cigarette butts.

There are several aspects of the pandemic that aren’t easily “fixable,” and the best practice for dealing with these issues is connecting with other people experiencing similar challenges.

How can you focus on creating meaningful social connections? A few tips include: • Make time to connect. Think about the types of connections you want to make.

Increase connections with close friends and family members. Schedule time to connect. • Stay grounded. We can learn a lot from those around us. Be respectful to others, open to dialogue, and listen to those around you. • Find people who share a common interest. Start by making a list of things you are interested in or would like to explore more. • Know your boundaries. While it’s important to build

social connections, it’s okay to set boundaries and communicate them. If feeling overwhelmed, it’s okay to step away and take a pause. • Be careful with expectations. Don’t have a specific goal or objective in mind; focus on being present in the experience of connecting.

One of the keys to moving away from loneliness and isolation is to start small.

Keep in mind that starting with small actions can lead to other connections.

Collaboration Enables More Than $3.2 Million In Grower Funded Canola Agronomic Research In 2022

February 24, 2022 – The three Prairie, provincial canola grower associations have evaluated and selected 14 new canola research projects to re c eive fun d ing un d er the Cano la Agronomic Research Program (CARP) in 2022. This investment inc ludes over $1.6 million from Alberta Canola, SaskCanola and Manitoba Canola Growers, as well as matching funds of over $1 million from the Western Grains Research Foundation (WGRF) and $450,000 contributed from Results Driven Agricultural Research (RDAR). The total investment into 2022 CARP projects is over $3.2 million.

-Pollinator impact on yield stability, -Integrated disease management, -Improving nitrogen management and reducing nitrous oxide emissions.

About CARP CARP is funded by the three provincial grower organizations – Alber ta Canola, SaskCanola and the Manitoba Canola Growers, and is administered by the Canola Council of Canada (CCC). Additional funds are provided for some CARP projects by WGRF and other occasional partners. Proposals are reviewed by the grower association research committees, with additional agronomic insight from the CCC’s crop production and innovation team.

Clubroot manages to spread in CVR. The single most important disease strategy is crop rotation (at least 2 years between canola crops), followed by using clubroot resistant varieties. The Canola Council of Canada recommends seeding grass at canola field entry points to provide a non-host area for soil to drop off equipment. CVR Ag Team and ALUS Vermilion River will work with farmers to proactively manage clubroot and to encourage grassing field approaches.

GROUND SQUIRREL CONTROL

Health Canada has cancelled the registration of 2% liquid strychnine used to control Richardson’s Ground Squirrels, with final production ending on March 4, 2021, sales ending March 4, 2022, and the product fully banned from use on March 4, 2023. The County of Vermilion River is sold out of strychnine and will not be receiving any more.

Options to help control gophers: • Consider raptor platforms, nesting boxes, perches, dense groundcover along fences and field margins, and other wildlife habitat to encourage natural predation • Reduce preferred gopher habitat by maintaining healthy pastures and using rotational grazing • Rozol RTU is registered for control of ground squirrels and pocket gophers in rangelands, crop, and non-crop areas. Rozol RTU is available from Agricultural Product Retailers • Rocon is a poison-free rodenticide registered for control of ground squirrels and gophers

Gardening You Can Do At The Beginning Of March

For our growing zone (3b) March is a good time to start some of the longer maturing vegetables indoors. Planting in covered seed trays is the best course of action, and can provide a gardener with the timeline needed for a vegetable to reach maturity before the first frost hits.

There are several options as to the kinds of seed trays to use, take your time and research the ones most suited to the space you have and the moisture content your seeds need to thrive. Things like pumpkins, celery, tomatoes and tomatil-

los can be started this month from seed.

When planting seeds indoors, pay attention to maturity timelines, you do not want your plants too big for the indoor trays and ready for the outdoors too early.

Remember this zone's frost free range begins roughly near the end of May. Start watching for the garden center ads, and specials on gardening tools and equipment. If you are lucky enough that your garden has a southern exposure and some sunny days, you may even be able to see some dirt later this month and do some planning. Kindness was the focus during the month of Februar y at St. Jerome’s. Did you know that February is Random Acts of Kindness Month!

Students in elementary worked to colour pictures depicting random acts of kindness that they can do for others! Older Spartans, in religion class, discussed Almsgiving (acts of charity) and ways that they can exemplify this facet of our Catholic Faith. On February 23, students and staff wore pink and participated in Pink Shirt Day. ​​This week marks the beginning of an important time in our Catholic Faith here

St. Jerome’s School News

at St. Jerome’s. We have begun learning all about Lent and our journey closer towards God during this time of year. On Shrove Tuesday, Mrs. Tina Zayac, Mrs. Dewing, Mr. Chase, and Mr. Whelan volunteered their time and efforts to prepare a pancake feast for students and staff to enjoy. Traditionally, Christians made pancakes on this day as a way to use up their milk, eggs, and sugar before the 40 days of fasting during Lent started.

Spartans also dressed up in their PJ’s to embrace the pancake feast to the fullest.

On Ash Wednesday, we participated in a Zoom Mass, led by Father Joy. During the Homily, Father Joy spoke of Lent and the three pillars of our faith during this time: fasting, almsgiving, and prayer. We received the mark of the cross in ashes,

made from blessed palms from the previous year, on our foreheads to remind us we are dust and unto dust we shall return.

T h e e l e m e nt ar y s tu d e nt s h ad a wonderful time celebrating the 100th day of school on February 28th! Grade one Spartans worked hard on their collections of 100 things and many cool projects were presented. Griffin Betz strung 100 nuts onto a string and attached the saying “Driving my Teacher Nuts for 100 Days!” Nicholas Thorne drew a monster with 10 0 eyes, and Marcus Aguda created a beautiful house scene with 100 buttons. The creativity was terrific and the students' pride shone through as they presented to their classmates about the counting strategies that they used, their favourite part of the building process, and

any challenges or bumps in the road that they faced. Ms. Svenungard brought in 600 red solo cups and students worked in teams to build a 100 cup structure, it was a loud and very exciting venture! Mrs. Lysons and Mrs. Schmidt used an aging app to capture what her students would look like at 100 years old, they then had to write about what their life might be like at 100. Mrs. McCormack’s Grade Threes wrote a bucket list of things they’d like to have done, and people they would like to have met before they turn one hundred.

In addition, Mrs. McCormack and several of her students dressed up like 100 year olds! What an exciting day!

February 17 and 18 was Teachers’ Convention. Once again this year, it was held virtually. One of the wonderful parts about a virtual convention, is that a number of sessions are prerecorded, so if teachers had two sessions they were interested in that were scheduled for the same time, they could watch both.

This also allowed teachers to watch live, but recorded sessions, after the session took place. We were fortunate to have two amazing keynote speakers. We started our convention with Canadian astronaut, Chris Hadfield, and ended with comedian and kindergarten teacher, Joe ‘Mr. D’ Dombrowski.

February 23 was Pink Shirt Day. VES students and staff came to school with an array of pink shirts and other pink paraphernalia. It is amazing to see the support for this

On February 25, we had the amazing opportunity to virtually meet hometown hero, Jolan Brunner Wong, Paralympic Volleyball Champion. She told us stories about her journey to be the best she can be. Jolan filled 45 minutes with stories and answers to questions about her childhood, her love of sports, and all the things she learned to do differently after she lost her leg from cancer. What an amazing opportunity to talk to someone so openly. She explained how her prosthetic leg worked and what it felt like. We loved that one of her legs was painted to look like a mermaid tail.

She explained that this was because, “If you can be anything, you should be a mermaid!”

Jolan told us how important having a positive mindset and perseverance is to accomplishing goals. Her favorite saying is “I will find a way, or I will make one.” We had fun trying to guess what activity Jolan has not been able to master yet. It was “criss-cross

applesauce” sitting. We are all different and unique, and have to find ways to do things we love. VES students and staff can’t wait to continue our connection with Jolan. She is a VES hometown hero, teaching our students through her stories and success to be the best we can be. Jolan is planning to play in the 2024 Paralympics in Paris, and we wish her the best of luck with that.

VES collected food for the food bank from February 14-25. Thank you to students, who brought in boxes and boxes of food. Staff were treated by our amazing School Council to a lunch on February 16 (thank you so much), so staff decided to pay it forward by donating cash to the food bank. VES’s food and cash donations are part of making connections with our community.

We had our assembly on March 2. We would like to congratulate the 18 science fair participants (of which 15 received a medal): Lance Adams, Bentley Buckingham, Hayden Buckingham, Navy Donily,

Penelope Donily, Brynn Ellerton, Grace Freeman, Joy Freeman, Jace Leahy, Gemma Morrison, Kaiel Morritt, Macy Myette, Natalay Nelson, Fiala Ostropolski, Reegan Smart, Beaudon Tupper, Ally Westman, and Walker Westman. Mrs. Tomkins informed us that the February AR points were 1021.5, for a total-to-date of 8158.2 points. Congratulations to Grade 4-6 top reader, Lily McKinnon with 26.5 points, and Grade 2-3 top reader, Macy Myette with 13.6 points. Mrs. Moses spoke about our March virtue, which is sportsmanship. Mrs. Moses also talked with us about March being nutrition month and then we all bit into a piece of celery at the same time for the Great Big Crunch.

Lakeland College’s Vermilion Campus will be hosting the Little Royal Rodeo from March 11 to 13.

The Little Royal, or as it was known Little International for its first two years has been an agricultural event off and on at the college for many years. In 1929, it became known as the Little Royal and expanded to include home economics displays, and was a highlighted activit y for the nex t four decades. Starting in the 1970s, the event according to the Lakeland

Sunday, the Rodeo Slack will be at 9 a.m. and the Rodeo Performance and Beer Gardens starting at 2 p.m. with a $10 admission fee.

The 2022 Balancing Act: Growth, Innovation And Risk Management

Canadian producers are encouraged to lean into their strategic planning skills this year to meet what's ahead. According to the FCC economic outlooks, challenges impacting the food supply chain will continue but the demand for commodities and food means there is opportunity for growth, indicating a need for farms, agribusinesses and food processors to innovate and manage risk.

The latest FCC outlook for the grains, oilseeds and pulses sector suggests prices will remain strong into 2022, due in part to the low national and global supply of these commodities amplified last year by the drought in western Canada.

“There is plenty of optimism for this sector looking at the year ahead; however, two of the biggest economic trends that could impact profitability are rising crop input costs and the impact of global political tensions on trade,” said J.P. Gervais, FCC’s chief economist. “I can’t emphasize enough the value of farm management and strategic thinking. Producers need to continue to plan for disruptions like we’ve seen in the past year.”

These elevated prices mean seeded acres of soybeans and canola are projected to climb in 2022, while corn acres are likely to come down because of the high cost of fertilizer. The price of fertilizer skyrocketed last year and is anticipated to stop increasing at a fast pace, but nonetheless remain elevated.

The cattle market is also signaling strong prices for 2022. The number of fed cattle in 2022 is forecast to decline and because of high feed costs, fed cattle will likely be marketed at lower weights, causing volume by weight to decline. However, given higher prices, cattle receipts should grow. The drought seriously impacted access to feed, resulting in some cattle producers downsizing their operations.

“The pandemic has impacted buying decisions in the grocery aisles. Canadian beef consumption slowed in 2021, but the positive five-year trend in consumption pre-pandemic is expected to resume while export demand remains robust,” Gervais explained.

Consumer appetite for dairy products grew in 2021 but not to the expected level.

With the increasing costs for feed and energy, the Canadian Dairy Commission is increasing the support price for butter.

While the dairy farm price is expected to experience an increase, milk output at the farm level could see only limited growth.

After strong growth in hog receipts in 2021, there is limited growth potential for 2022. Hog prices are projected to decline slightly and with marginal growth in production. High feed prices will challenge profitability and may hinder production growth.

Gervais offers the following tips for producers to build resilience and capitalize on opportunities to advance their operations: Strategy – keep an eye on longterm objectives, including growth. Think about the integration of operational, marketing and financial plans.

Innovation – consider the technological changes, efficiencies and sustainable practices that would provide an edge to your operation.

Risk Management – develop scenarios to determine exposure to unfavourable market trends, interest rate increases, higher input prices, trade impacts or weather events.

Execution – Surround yourself with

skilled resources to help you assess and adjust your financial and marketing plans as the economy and markets evolve.

"While the long-term outlook for Canada's ag and food industry is positive, there are many factors to keep in mind as operations make their plans, including input costs, trade tensions, variable weather and changing consumer behaviour,” Gervais said. “We encourage producers to stay up-to-date on the important topics and trends that will impact them and take action accordingly.”
