Joseph James “Jim” Brown Jim passed away at the Harvest Home Continuing Care Centre in Vermilion, Alberta, leaving behind family and many friends.

He was born in 1936 on the farm in Tofield, Alberta.

Jim graduated from Ontario Veterinary College in May of 1959 and opened a Veterinary Clinic in Vermilion. In 1972, he sold the clinic and farmed northwest of Vermilion where he raised cattle, sheep, and other livestock. He showed his purebred Hereford cattle at many shows, including the Calgary Bull Sale.

Jim taught veterinary medicine at the Vermilion School of Agriculture for four years and enjoyed organizing the Vermilion 4H Sheep Club. He always had a soft spot in his heart and generously supported the 4H Club.

From 1983 until 1989, he had the opportunity to teach at the Veterinary College at King Faisel University inHofuf, Saudi Arabia. There he found the work very interesting and challenging. He also experienced the Saudi Arabian culture and enjoyed travelling to many countries.

December of 2010 was a very difficult time for Jim. He suffered a stroke which left him with hearing and speech impairments. Special family and friends helped him, particularly Lynda Moses.

A love for nature, stewardship of the land and a “Big Heart”, we all miss you.

Educator School Supply Tax Credit – To support teachers and early childhood educators in Canada, the government proposes to expand and enrich the Eligible Educator School Supply Tax Credit. The expansion of this credit will allow teachers and early childhood educators to claim a 25 per cent refundable tax credit, an increase from the previous 15 percent, for purchases up to $1,000 on eligible teaching supplies bought during the tax year. The government also proposes to expand the list of eligible teaching supplies to include electronic devices such as graphing calculators, digital timers, and tools for remote learning. These enhancements would take effect starting in the 2021 tax year.

Northern residents deductions – As a resident of Alberta, you may live in a prescribed zone and be eligible to claim a residency deduction and a travel deduction. To find out if you live in a prescribed zone, visit Line 25500 - Places located in prescribed zones. The northern residents deductions are available to those who permanently live in one or more prescribed zones for a continuous period of at least six consecutive months, beginning or ending in the tax year. Eligible individuals living in a prescribed northern zone can claim the full amount of these deductions, and those living in a prescribed intermediate zone can claim 50% of these deductions. The residency deduction is based on how many days you lived in a prescribed zone during the tax year. The government has proposed changes to the travel deduction. Under proposed changes, the travel deduction will be expanded and be available to eligible northern residents, including eligible family members, who take a personal trip even if no taxable travel benefit was received for that trip. Lakeland College Welcomes Prospective Students With Tours And Information Sessions

Trying something new this year, Lakeland College gave interested students the opportunity to have personal tours of both the Lloydminster and Vermilion campuses. During the week of February 21-25, the College’s Recruitment and Enrollment staff met with over 30 potential students and their families to show them around and highlight some of the specific areas on campus that students will want to be familiar with when attending Lakeland.

As well as a general tour of the common buildings all students access regularly, like the cafeteria, the learning commons, health services, student services, the campus bookstores and the recreational facilities, tours also consist of the buildings, classrooms and areas that pertain to the program a student is interested in.

Students interested in entering the Agricultural Sciences department will look at the student managed farm buildings, including the dairy barn, equine center, and animal health clinic. Fire and Emergency Services students will head over to Fire Etc. to check it out.

The Vermilion campus also offers tours of the Human Services classes, including the Early Childhood Center and the Interior Design department and labs. In Lloydminster, potential students can tour the Energy building, and learn in more detail about the Health and Wellness programs, including the Esthetics courses, University Transfer and the Business classes available.

Tours are available at both campuses all year, but this was the first year that the College offered a week devoted to tours, trying something new through the school’s Reading Week break. Virtual tours are always available through the College’s website also.

During the weekend of March 10, the College is offering Program Info Sessions at both campuses.

The Lloydminster campus will be holding their sessions on March 10, and Vermilion on March 11. These sessions are an opportunity to explore a chosen program more in depth. They will take place on campus, and they let students connect with present and former students and instructors, so that they can have questions about student

support services and financial aid answered, as well as learn about career opportunities and how Lakeland prepares graduates for them. They will also find out more about Lakeland’s supportive campus community, and discover some of the hands-on opportunities that deliver real-world results. Those who attend sessions will also receive a promo code to apply for free on campus.

Lenora Hannah Brown

Lenora Hannah Brown passed away on February 19, 2022 in Vermilion at the age of 78 years.

She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 58 years Tom Brown; children Jim Brown, Rick (Darla) Brown, Mary Ann (Brian) Kosinski, and Kevin Brown; grandchildren Kristine Brown and Joel Brown; siblings Eunice (Gerald) Roth, Jim (Susan) Wilkinson, and Ken (Judy) Wilkinson; siblings in law Arthur (Helen) Brown, Wendy Greber, Mary Halls, and Shirley Brown; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was predeceased by her parents Bert & Mary Wilkinson; parents in law Arnot & Vera Brown; and siblings in law John Brown, Larry Greber, Wayne Hooper, and Howard Halls.

A Celebration of Life will be taking place in the July of 2022.

Whitney Weston has been the owner and operator of Flatlands Kennels located in Maidstone, Saskatchewan for the past 15 years. Weston was raised on a beef farm and it was there she began her journey of learning animal behaviour, husbandry and, care. Through-

out her life, she has had the opportunity to show cattle professionally all over Canada, as well as participate in 4H Beef and Veterinary projects. She continued learning about nutrition and exercise performance of animals when she spent time with her granddad who raised Thoroughbred racehorses. When Weston was 17 years old she acquired a dog that displayed aggressive behavi o u r a n d We s t o n knew she had to learn in greater d e pt h t he b ehaviours and management of dogs.

In October 1936, Vermilion was dealing with several store break-ins and it was up to the town constable F.G. Harrington to find out who was doing it.

On three consecutive nights, two men broke into Vermilion stores by drilling through the locks at the doors. On Wednesday, Harrington, who had been looking for the two men, saw an automobile in the area of a robbery and he made a note of the licence plate.

Later in the night, he was notified that the store of Craig Brothers had been drilled. Rather than going to the store, Harrington instead went to where he had seen the automobile but it was gone. He would then notify Constable Harrison of the RCMP and was able to get the name of the owner of the car. He then laid down a containment area in the surrounding

Blueberry Muffins 2 cups flour 2 teaspoons baking powder

3/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup butter (room temperature) 1 cup sugar 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla 2/3 cup milk 2 1/4 cups blueberries Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Into a bowl add the flour baking powder and salt, stir to blend. In a separate bowl beat the sugar into the butter until light and fluffy. Add the eggs and vanilla to the butter mixture and beat until well blended. To this bowl add by thirds the flour mixture and milk beating until just blended, stir in the blueberries.

Spoon into paper-lined muffin tins. Makes 12 muffins. Bake at 375 degrees for 30 minutes.

How One Company Uses Lava Lamps To Secure The Internet

Online securit y has always been something to struggle towards, as creating a secure password, and being able to remember it, is not always easy.

Typically users will opt to write down a long string of random numbers and letters if they value the security of the account they are using. Many even let Google or other companies generate a random password for them, and link it to the new account. Although all these work quite well, they still do have some shor tcomings; especially when you move onto systems that require even

more security.

Randomness is not something that computers are especially fond of. In fact, computers really cannot handle randomness at all on their own. This is because a computer, at its core, is just a calculator on steroids. A calculation goes in and the correct answer always comes out. This can make something like randomness a ver y interesting problem to solve, as there is no calculation that will inherently give a different answer every time. The solution to this problem is that programmers will often use a series of user impacted parameters to influence the outcome of the calculation. the exact position of the mouse cursor on the screen to the precise timing between keystrokes. And although this method works for most cases there are some situations that require even more complex and unpredictable means.

Cloudflare is an internet security company that specializes in these ex traordinar y means, as they use video feed of lava lamps to generate their random numbers. Though this may sound extravagant, and even a bit unnecessary, they do actually provide a very useful service. By using these random numbers Cloudflare secures websites so that the traffic going in and out only reac hes its intended

user. Because of this, they need to be sure that the random numbers they generate cannot be synthesized by any program, as if they could be, the encryption would be useless. Simple randomness or even mouse positionbased randomness can in theory be replicated. However, a video stream of this wall of lava lamps, with hundreds of thousands of pixels is easily more challenging to synthesize than trying to guess what the encryption key would be. This is especially useful when it comes to online shopping or banking as this information simply should not be viewed by anyone other than you and the distributor.

Finally, on my first trip to Ireland, I took horrid clothing. I was gifted a raincoat that had belonged to a recently deceased woman of 96 years. I purchased brown, serviceable, and highly unattractive cargo pants with extra pockets, and I packed two shirts that had seen better days. Why? I ask myself that same question. It had something to do with thrift and the fact no one would ever know me over there, so what did it matter if I looked frumpy. However, I found myself sitting by a lady, at least thirty years my elder, who wore the very same outfit as I was.

Problem was she looked better. Next day, I left the coat, the pants, and the shirts not a very long, long way from Tipperary.

So, while I haven’t been able to travel these last few years, I feel as though part of me, however strange, still lives on in Europe. Maybe even a piece of my heart.

Emergency Services Responses Still A Province-Wide Issue

Calls for immediate support for a shortage in emergency service personnel in the Province have not been answered, and statistics put out by the Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA) for the first half of February

show some of the impacts of this.

Between January 25 and February 19, province-wide there were 74 incidents that Alberta Health Services identified as Red Alerts (when no ambulance is available to respond to a call in a jurisdiction). Roughly 166 long response calls were recorded, and over

100 occurrences of a shift being down an ambulance due to a staff shortage were reported.

In the Vermilion/Wainwright/Lloydminster area, the numbers were a little better than before the New Year, but are still concerning. On January 29, a Vermilion ambulance was dispatched

For a second year, the Lloydminster and District Fish and Game Association has made the difficult decision to provide their regular Family banquet and award presentation, which usually serves 425 to 485 guests by drive-thru only, due to the COVID-19 restrictions which were in place when the banquet was planned.

The Drive-Thru banquet will be held on March 6 at the Lloydminster Agricultural Exhibition Association from 4 to 7 p.m. at 5521 49 Avenue in Lloydminster with a wild boar/roast beef supper with all the trimmings and dessert. There are many strengths that the Vermilion and area communities can brag about, and the plethora of volunteers and volunteer organizations is o n e t hat m any re s i d e nt s are ver y proud of. Volunteer groups in Vermilion date as far back as 1900, and a few have histories of over 70 years of service.

Volunteers and volunteer ser vice clubs have accomplished some great t h i n g s i n n o t o n l y Ve r m i l i o n , b u t throughout the area that now encompasses the County of Vermilion River and the County of Minburn. Service clubs and volunteers have assisted or supported everything from building

recreation sites (curling arenas, pools, playgrounds, ice rinks, tennis courts, the spray park) to supplying food for the food bank and school breakfast and lunch programs. Fundraising for major projects, like the War Memorial in the center of Vermilion, the Regional Center, and the recent Vermilion Valley Lodge expansion, were accomplished in part due to the hard work of volunteers and local service clubs.

Many yearly activities that people e n j oy i n t h e ar e a , l i ke t h e s p o r t s seasons for youth, dance and music festivals, plays and musical per formances, and Vermilion’s Fair at the end of July would not be possible without the huge contributions of volunteers of all ages.

St Jerome’s School 60th Anniversary

My thoughts have been wandering toward Vermilion the past while. Sixty years ago, the Vermilion Catholic School District had been organizing for the first school to be opened in September, 1962. Trustees Champion, Herzog, Mireault, Payment, MacMillan, sect/treas Barber, along with Father Keenan, Pastor of Holy Name Parish, had already given much time and effort along with a cooperative community to be at the point in the process where a principal had been hired, Anthony Reghelini, and interviews for staffing were begun.

That spring, all of us newly hired staff members were invited to meet the trustees and they us, probably both had a little trepidation. I still today hear the whispers to each other. “So, what do you think?”

Well, mostly businessmen who had the wherewithal to see the project to completion, while the new staff was a mixture of mostly experienced, proven professionals, Like Laurence, Maltais, Kennedy, Ross, McCaughey, Ganton, Mrs. Reghelini,and two newbies, Herb Weinmeyer and myself.

There was also Mr. Schmidt, the janitor, the one who really ran the school.

Angus MacMillan (Chairperson), a kind, sincere, principled person stands out more than anyone, as does Anthony Reghelini, (taught in Marwayne but trained by Jesuits in the Punjab, later involved in India with the teachers’ Federation), the first principal, a no-nonsense, by-the-book mentor, as it turned out. Being, not even twenty-one, hardly older than the students, we newly minted were energetic, eager to please.

As I think back to those four years, and getting involved in all aspects of

school life: from teaching, directing drama productions, Physical Education classes and coaching, I was blessed to experience student growth in so many ways.

Language Arts still remains my favourite subject; with the Grade nine departmentals in those days, it was so satisfying to coach students and see their wonderment after doing better than they thought.

Anyway all that for another time, as I would like to pay tribute to the Town of Vermilion and its people for being so welcoming. Even as busy as we were, we did curl, golf, bowl at the new Zazula lanes; the Mistals, Rose and Joe, took us under their wing, so we became part of their family. Also the Mayowski’s, Wally and Darlene, who I have never thanked enough for their letting me live with them.

I will leave it at that, to give you a sense of how important both the school and town community were in shaping a life. Hope-

Hint Of Spring – In Our Garden Of Grief

There is a change in the season and there are changes on our grief journey.

Changes and good-byes care painful and times of fear of what the future will be like. The feeling of life “out of control” and fears of adjusting to a new and different course in our lives. Acceptance is not an overnight happening but a gradual change, just as the seasons. It can be a time of an emotional roller- coaster.

When in this time in our lives we need to look at how we are going to cope. We need some coping tools for our emotional grief garden.

LOOKING AT LIFE’S ALTERNATIVES: Acceptance of life as it is now and having

the courage and ability to look at choices and changes that will happen for the tomorrows. Life is like a river ever-changing and moving. We cannot stay rooted in the pain of today or a fixed picture of what life “is”, we have to be open to there being an alternative to where we are now.

USING OUR MEMORIES:(sum total of what we can remember). Persons and relationships never die but become memories. We can take back some control of our lives and our grief journey when we are in charge of our memories and can recall good ones and shut out bad ones. Sometimes those memories will cause tears but later on our journey we will be able to laugh and cry too. Embrace the past but hold it gently as you move forward.

VERBALIZE FEELINGS AND THOUGHTS TO A SUPPORT PERSON: Finding and utilizing that support person or group is a vital tool to healing and moving forward. Sharing without shame or fear, feelings of “crazy”, anger, sadness, joy or relief, all apart of the grief journey. “No man is an island unto himself” We need people to talk to, to heal and become a new wholeness. Do not forget the children and other members of the family who are all on their own journey, too. We can share the gift of honesty, with ourselves and the others in our family and have a concern with where they are on their journey. We can encourage and listen to their

feelings and emotions and help them find supportive people.

BEGIN THE USE OF PROBLEM SOLVING: a) Look at what problem you are facing and state it. (b) begin to express how you feel about it. (c) Find a trustworthy person to share what you are experiencing. (d) Seek support and insight from others who are in similar situations. (e) Realize you are the only person you can change. Get out those coping tools, take courage, you are in charge of tending your grief garden.

Dear Editor On social media it has been reported that people who contributed to the Truckers Convoy to Ottawa have had their bank accounts frozen.

Under provisions of the Emergencies Measures Act that allows the government to freeze bank accounts.

This is absolutely ridiculous!! This is just not right!!!

The bankers for their part were just more than willing to comply and the bank accounts were frozen within hours.

I have dealt with many bankers over my lifetime and most of them I hold in very low regard. I have met a few

good ones but they are few and far between. I have a saying about bankers: they produce nothing, they are just parasites living off the work and efforts of others.

Don’t trust the banks people!!! Move your money, folks!!! Enough said!!!

Expertise with internet-based research, social media channels and Microsoft Excel and Word is essential.

Vermilion Tigers Win Round One Of Playoffs

The Vermilion Jr. B Tigers have come out victorious in the first round of playoffs after beating out Cold Lake four games to one on February 19.

“We had crowds at the stadium to cheer the team on Thursday and Saturday night that we haven’t seen for years! It was a packed house with so much energy and excitement for the home team ! It was 2009 the last time a play off round was won!” commented Carla Protsch.

The first playoffs game had the Tigers take the win with no competition, leaving the game with a 4-0 lead. In game 2 Cold Lake pulled off a nice win with an action packed game. In this game the Cold Lake team was behind until the final period, however they made a few quick goals, and with not enough time left on the clock for the Tigers to recover they

took the win. This game ended with a 3-2 lead for the Cold Lake team. In the 3rd game of the Cold Lake playoffs the Vermilion Tigers flipped the script and took a 3-2 win of their own. In Game 4 both teams were energetic and sunk the puck often, the score was close, but ultimately the Vermilion Tigers won with 5 points, vs the Cold Lakes 4 points. In the final game of the series the Tigers made their fans proud by taking the win for not just the game, but the entire Cold Lake playoffs, in a close game ending in a score of 3-4.

The next round of playoffs starts this week with home games on March 3 at 8:30 p.m., March 5 at 7:30 p.m. and March 7 at 8 p.m. against the Wainwright Bison, unless the four games are met before that date. Fans can check out the Tigers Facebook page for the Wainwright game times and there will also be a guaranteed 50/50 draw for the home games.

The County is sold out of strychnine and will not be receiving any more.

No Spray Agreements are available to those ratepayers who don’t want herbicides applied to the municipal road right of ways adjacent to their property and agree to themselves control weeds and vegetation within the County ROW. Since joining the Foundation in 2018, Stephanie has continued to add to her resume completing her certification in Grant Writing from the University of Alberta, finished her certificate in Leadership Development from the University of Saskatchewan, and is currently completing her Certified Fund-Raising Executive designation from CFRE International.

Malcolm has been an excellent mentor, I hope to continue to build on that success and wish him the best in his future endeavours. As reported in January, the National Police Federation (NPF) launched their Keep Alberta RCMP campaign to bring information and awareness of the proposal to the communities that will be impacted by a change in policing services. Touring the province until the end of March, they are presenting a breakdown of the costs presented in the APPS Transition Study regarding switching to and establishing a provincially operated police service. These costs include starting up, recruiting, training and establishing facilities to house the police. The NPF also argues that in establishing a provincial service, the federal funds that are contributed to the RCMP policing costs in the province will no longer be available to help cover 30% of the costs of that service.

Using other provincial police services like Ontario’s OPP and Quebec’s Surete du Quebec as examples, as well Surrey BC’s present transition to a municipal service, the presentation focuses on unexpected cost increases and concerns regarding recruitment and retention of members.

Their presentations give community members an opportunity to gather and ask questions, not only of the NPF, but also of local law enforcement and politicians as some have attended the sessions. Like the government, the NPF agrees that some changes in rural policing in Alberta needs to change to accommodate the unique crime issues that communites face. One of the perspectives that the NPF presents is that these changes are more likely to be achieved if the current policing model and funding remain in place. They also point out that where the funds for any additional costs incurred will come from is not in the transition study.

Whether or not this plan comes to be, the conversation impacts all rural communities. Changes to policing in Alberta will need to be created to accommodate every community’s unique needs and issues.

These topics are covered in the recordkeeping modules that are designed to be used by a wide range of producers and management systems, targeting different levels of experience: Level 1 is a good starting point for beginners, and contains many of the parameters of the Cow-Calf Production Indicators Calculator; Level 2 is for someone that has started some records but would like to expand their data collection; and Level 3 builds upon the first two levels to dig deeper into analysis and application.

An example from Level 2 looks at mature cow weight and the industry target of a cow weaning a calf that is 45% of her body weight.

Producers need to know their weaning weights and cow weights, which can typically be found from sale tickets. For example, if the average cow weight on a farm is 1250lb and the average weaning weight for calves is 578lb, that herd is weaning calves that are 46. 2% of the cows’ body weight, which is above the target.

Producers could take this information to Level 3 to look at how cow size impacts forage demand and carrying capacity of pastures. For example, a 100-head cow herd that weighs an average of 1000lb will eat less (i.e., demand less forage) than a 100-cow herd that weighs 1250lb. Both herds

would demand less forage than a 10 0 - head c ow herd c omprised of 1500lb cows.

There are a lot of different options for keeping records, ranging from paper records, such as calving books, to computerized records like Excel or Google Sheets, or herd management software programs. Some management programs are free, while others require a subscription fee.

Computerized formats may allow for quicker analysis or for multiple users to access information, however the type of system producers implement will vary by personal preference.

Collecting, maintaining and analyzing records takes a commitment, but the payoffs are worth it. Research shows that record-keeping and setting goals increases weaning weights which

translates to greater profit. There is also benefit to building a greater awareness of how your farm operates.

Extra time and in some cases additional equipment and tools, such as a weigh scale or herd software, may be needed however this infrastructure may be a worthwhile investment toward increased efficiency and profitability.

There is a familiar saying “the best time to start was yesterday, and the next best time is now.” Think about how the changes you make right now, including the time you invest in collecting and understanding your farm data, can impact your production and profits in the coming years.

Calving distribution is the percentage of calves born in each 21-day cycle throughout the calving season. Each time a cow is not bred during a 21-day heat cycle, it can cost up to 39 lbs of weaning weight (assuming an average daily gain

on calves of 1.85 lbs/day).

The benefits of a shortened calving season are numerous: Having more calves born in the first 21 days of the calving season allows producers to market larger, more uniform groups of calves and increase their profit potential.

Herd vaccinations are easier to time.

Increased uniformity allows easier

comparison between calves.

The industry recommendation for calving season length is 63 days for cows and 42 days for heifers. This shines light on breeding management beyond a pregnancy rate. While high pregnancy rate is desired, there are potential economic losses if producers don’t have 60% of their cows calving in the first 21 days.

Value of Calving Distribution Calculator The BCRC’s Value of Calving Distribution Calculator allows producers to see what their current calving distribution is and what the short-term economic benefit would be if they move to the industry target of 60-25-10-5, or a condensed breeding season of three cycles.

0 -25 -10 -5: 60% of females calving within the first cycle, followed by 25% calving between 21-42 days, 10% between 42-63 days and the remaining 5% calving in the fourth and final cycle.

It is important to remember that any increase in revenue from having more calves born earlier in the calving season (and therefore heavier weaning weights) needs to take into account the cost of achieving that outcome. Some examples of cost factors are: Pre-partum nutrition management to reach desired body condition score.

Increased risk of open cows Time, labour and facility if estrus synchronization or artificial insemination is used.

The cost of implementing any of these options will vary based on a farm’s set up.

Lakeland Board Of Governors Welcomes New Public Members OBITUARY Lakeland College Submitted

Headley Dennill February 3, 2022

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Headley Dennill, of Dewberry, on February 3, 2022. Headley passed away at the Elk Point Healthcare Centre, with his family by his side, at the age of 89 years.

Headley will be forever missed and remembered by his loving wife of almost 70 years – Annie Dennill; Children – Debbie (Gary)Hansen; Linda (Robin) Sherwood; Roland (Leslie) Dennill; Morley (Arnell) Dennill; and Janine (Todd) Hames; 12 Grandchildren and 7 Great Grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life, for Headley, was held on Friday, February 11, 2022, at the Dewberry Hall. Interment followed at the Dewberry Cemetery.

(Vermilion/Lloydminster, Alta.) Lakeland College is pleased to welcome two new public members to the Board of Governors – Dr. Sean Lessard and Dean Fahselt.

“Our board of governors is a tremendous resource for all of us at Lakeland,” says Dr. Alice Wainwright-Stewart, president and CEO of Lakeland College. “They bring together a wealth of knowledge and experience, and we are privileged to have them as part of the Lakeland family. I am excited to welcome Sean and Dean to the board. With the addition of their unique perspectives and expertise, our board is definitely well positioned to help guide the future of Lakeland College.”

Dr. Sean Lessard Dr. Lessard was born on the Montreal Lake Cree Nation and later adopted by a family in North Battleford, Sask. He graduated from Lakeland’s rehabilitation services program in 1994 and later earned a bachelor of education, a master of educational psychology, and a doctorate of elementary education and teaching from the University of Alberta.

Dr. Lessard has worked as a respite worker, social worker, teacher, counsellor an d c o nsult ant fo c using o n Indigenous education. He’s also had faculty positions at the University of Regina in Education and the University of Alberta in teacher education.

His passion for Indigenous youth takes him across the country for research, speaking engagements and program development. He’s also the CEO of his own company – Name to Place Educational and Community Consulting.

“I am honoured to be par t of the Lakeland College family,” says Dr. Lessard. “As a First Nations person, I have watched closely the strate gic steps that Lakeland College has under taken to create a diverse and safe space for both students and staff.

I am hoping to bring my positive energy to growing and sharing the Lakeland College experience.”

Dean Fahselt Fahselt has been involved in the management and ownership of a nu m b er of su c c e s sful bu s in e s se s within the agriculture sector throughout his career, spending the last 24 of those years in the Vermilion area. He is presently the CEO of AgLink Canada, an organization focused on supporting Canadian Ag Businesses. Dean and his wife also operate a small 150 cow/ calf cattle operation that provides a high level of personal satisfaction and a tight connection to the local ag community. Fahselt is a life-long learner and has taken numerous courses to progress his skills and knowledge.

“Lakeland College has been a very integral part of the development of my career as well as in the success of the businesses I have been associated with,” Fahselt says. “I take great pride

in the quality of education offered at the Lakeland College and the alumni working within the industry. It is vital that the next generation of employees, entrepreneurs and business owners are able to critically think, develop robust soft skills and remain life-long learners.

I strongly suppor t the methods utilized at Lakeland College to immerse students in active roles and situations for real-life learning and feel it has placed those students with a recognizable advantage for their future. Lakeland College is an important institution in Canada. Contributing to the vision, mission and long-term strategies of Lakeland is truly an honor and something I am looking forward to very much.”

Dr. Lessard and Fahselt join the board which includes Adam Waterman, chair, Jo-Ann Hall, vice chair, public members Brent Fischer, Dianne Harder, Doreen McCaw, academic staff member Chris Thompson, nonacademic staf f member Greg Barr, and students Amelia Magee and Mary Janice Novick. Dr. Wainwright-Stewart serves as an Ex Officio member.

“It’s a sincere pleasure to welcome Mr. Fahselt and Dr. Lessard to the board of governors,” says Waterman.

“Their combined knowledge, perspective and experience will bring valuable contributions to our board as we continue to work towards driving Lakeland’s growth and development.”

The family of Headley Dennill would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our friends and family for the love and support that was shown to us during our time of grief. We would like to say thank you for the meals brought to the hospital and to the house. As well, thank you for the visits, food trays, baking, flowers, cards, prayers, phone calls and messages. There were many donations made in memory of Headley which were thoughtful beyond words. We want to say thank you for your generosity.

The care and attention that Headley received while in the Elk Point Health Care Centre was delivered with much kindness and professionalism. We will always be grateful for this.

Thank you to Deacon Michael Hall and Pastor Kevin Nelson for your personal and comforting words during a difficult time. We want to thank the Dewberry Fire Department for organizing an honor guard in Headley’s memory. We know this would have meant a lot to Dad. To Creech’s Funeral Home, we thank you for your compassion, professionalism, attention to detail and fulfilling our every request to make Dad’s “Celebration of Life” very personal. This allowed us to honor Dad in a way that we felt he was deserving of.

Community meant everything to Headley/Dad/Grandpa. The support that our community showed to our family, during our time of loss, was a testament to the great people who live here. It was appreciated more than words could ever express. As Headley/Dad always said, “I live in the best place on earth.”

Innisfree Minburn 4H Beef Club – February Report

We had our monthly meeting on February 9 at Innisfree Millennium Building. We have a very busy month ahead. Our public speaking is set for Feb 18 at Minburn. Members have been busy preparing and prepping for

it. Our leader tour to check up on calves and just give any tips leading into the second half of our year is scheduled for Feb 13. Some members are attending Oil Kings game on Feb. 21 at Rogers Place for 4H night. We are going to Quarter Cuts to see their great facility and learn about processing beef,

pork and wild game on Feb 25 at 7 p.m.

Next meeting is scheduled for March 9, 2022 in Minburn at 7 p.m.

What mineral supplementation do I need and when do I need it?

Beef producers might know they should supplement their herds with mineral, but trying to wade through all the choices at the livestock supply store can be overwhelming.

Commercial suppliers seem to make claims and offer something different, but with tubs and bags of every colour and price available, how to you know which one is right for your herd? What minerals do your cattle actually need and how is it best delivered?

Megan Van Schaik, a Beef Cattle Specialist with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) says there are some key things producers want to look at. In general, producers should be supplementing mineral to their herds whether they are grazing or being fed a winter ration.

Van Schaik says there are a host of variables that impact mineral nutrition and deficiencies in beef herds. “They present in many different ways and alarm bells usually go off when we see reproductive issues,” she says, but adds that mineral status can be linked to general health problems and even calf abnormalities. Mineral deficiencies can also cause less obvious production losses that can be easily avoided with proper supplementation.

A new collaborative project is getting underway between the drought, with collaboration from OMAFRA and the University of Guelph, to track and monitor the mineral status of a sample of beef cattle herds in that province. A similar project tracked trace mineral status of herds across Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba and identified

some key gaps, noting that up to 43% of cows sampled were deficient in copper.

Why do cattle need mineral supplementation?

Beef cattle rely on at least seventeen minerals which are categorized as macrominerals and microminerals (also known as trace minerals).

Macrominerals include calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), sodium (Na), chlorine (Cl) and sulphur (S) and are needed in relatively large quantities of more than 100 parts per million (ppm). Macromineral requirements are usually expressed on a percent dry matter (% DM) basis in an animal’s ration.

Beef cattle also need ten microminerals, also referred to as trace minerals, which include chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), iodine (I), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), selenium (Se) and zinc (Zn). These are needed in small quantities, and as such are often expressed on labels as ppm (parts per million), or mg/kg.

Minerals are required for several functions including skeletal development, immunity, production, nervous system maintenance and overall metabolism. Perhaps even more importantly, minerals interact with other minerals, vitamins and water or feed sources. This can limit absorption or availability.

The concentration of minerals in forages and feeds varies depending on soil, plant and management factors. While spring pasture growth looks lush, the reality is that few pastures — regardless of plant species — fully meet the mineral requirements of a lactating cow. Both macrominerals, such as calcium, phosphorus and magnesium, and trace minerals, such as copper and zinc, are

in short supply in tame and native pastures and therefore require supplementation.

Also, as a cow goes through gestation, calving and then attempts to breed back, her mineral requirements fluctuate. Supplementation is necessary to keep her on track.

Drought conditions and water quality can complicate mineral nutrition, and different anti-quality factors will impact certain minerals and their absorption. “The only real way to find if you have mineral deficiencies and antagonistic factors is to test feeds and water,” explains Van Schaik.

Include mineral analysis of forages and feed ingredients as part of regular feed testing. Testing for calcium and phosphorus will show the ratio present in the feed. The ratio of calcium to phosphorus in a diet should be between 2:1 and 6:1. Analysing magnesium, potassium and calcium in feeds is important to ensure the ratio of potassium relative to calcium and magnesium combined is below 2.2, which will prevent tetany.

Feed testing is particularly important when producers may be feeding alternative feeds such as drought-stressed crops or canola forage, or when cattle may be drinking stock water that is high in Total Dissolved Solids (TDS). For example, copper deficiency is a standard concern for many areas of Canada but in a drought situation, elevated sulfate levels in stock water can make a bad problem worse by tying up available copper. This can lead to a reproductive wreck which could be prevented with mineral supplementation containing appropriate levels of copper.

Too much sulphur can also cause sulphur toxicity and should be analysed in both water and feed samples. Cumulative sulphur levels from water and feed should be less

than between 0.3 and 0.4 percent to prevent toxicity which can result in polioencephalomalacia.

Molybdenum also ties up copper, so testing forages for molybdenum will help producers understand of they have higher levels and are at risk for copper deficiency.

Not all supplements are created equal Van Schaik says it’s important for producers to note that minerals come in different forms and modes of action which impacts the “bioavailability” of that mineral, which is the animal’s ability to absorb it. “There’s value in assessing whether your mineral requirements benefit from enhanced bioavailability,” she says, particularly for a trace mineral deficiency like copper.

Minerals come in two main forms, inorganic or organic (i.e., chelated) forms. Most supplements are a combination of inorganic and organic forms and are priced accordingly. Inorganic mineral supplements are the most affordable, however they are typically the least absorptive and can even break down in a feeder before they are consumed.

Organic, or chelated, minerals are bound to proteins, organic acids or yeasts. Supplements containing organic minerals are more expensive however they are much more effective, particularly if producers are looking to quickly eliminate a deficiency during periods of stress.

In spite of whatever claim commercial mineral suppliers make, there is no one product that will meet the need of every farm or herd. Mineral needs change by season (i.e., grazing compared to winter feeding) and whether cattle are growing or finishing or what stage of gestation or lactation they are at. Continued on page 23

Veterinarians can analyse blood or liver samples from a herd to determine a farm’s unique mineral needs. “A blood sample can be used as a snapshot to see if there are any deficiencies,” Van Schaik says, but adds that some deficiencies are best detected through liver biopsies since those samples tell you the most about stored trace mineral levels.

Methods of supplementation Mineral can be delivered through a complete diet where minerals are part of a total mixed ration (TMR), or they can be offered in block form, lick tubs or loose mineral. Some products also contain protein and energy supplements, which will affect intake.

Offering mineral as part of a complete feed delivered in a feed bunk is ideal because it allows for more controlled consumption. Data shows that cows fed trace minerals in a ration were six times less likely to be copper deficient at calving and experienced less delay coming back into heat compared to their counterparts fed trace minerals free-choice. method requires management, however.

“Pay attention to things like consistent intake across the herd, ensuring adequate bunk space for cows. In any supplementation scenario, it’s important to pay attention to other factors to prevent exposure of mineral to the elements like rain or wind,” explains Van Schaik.

Not every production system is suited to daily mineral supplementation, however, and many herds spend the majority of their time out grazing. While a general rule of thumb is that forage-based diets benefit from a 1:1 calcium-to-phosphorus ratio supplement, and grain-based rations (including greenfeed) benefit from 2:1 or even 3:1 calcium-to-phosphorus supplement, the best way to determine that is to do a mineral profile on your pasture.

Salt can be mixed in with loose mineral supplements to increase or limit the amount of intake. Because cattle crave salt, it can be a useful additive to encourage cattle to consume the required amount of mineral, however there are limits to how much salt they will eat, which also prevents overconsumption. Van Schaik cautions producers when it comes to offering both loose mineral and salt separately and side by side, however. “There is a higher risk of reducing mineral intake if the salt is

provided separately beside the mineral,” she explains.

Van Schaik adds that mineral placement in pastures is key. “If you’re grazing cattle, you want to have your mineral supplementation in close proximity to where cattle are gathering,” she says. “Water is a good place to offer mineral supplementation,” Van Schaik explains, and adds you want to put your mineral in a feeder so that it is protected from the elements. Producers have created some unique portable mineral feeders that move along with cattle in rotational grazing set-ups. Depending on the design of the mineral feeder, a general rule of thumb is having one mineral feeder placed for every 30 to 40 head.

Read the label and do the math “It’s really important to make sure producers are reading label instructions for adequate intake,” says Van Schaik. “The label will typically provide intake on a per head per day basis – that’s a big thing. It can be tempting to add a bag of mineral to a feeder and walk away, but routine monitoring of mineral intake is really important,” she adds.

As well, the label will indicate how much of which type of mineral is found in the product. Trace mineral intake levels are usually described in parts per million

(ppm) or milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg).

Whether a commercial product meets the mineral needs of an animal depends on how much is in the product and how much the animal needs to consume. As an example, a producer might review the labels of two mineral supplements: one contains 1,500 mg/kg of copper and the other contains 3,000 mg/kg of copper. If the label indicated animals are expected to consume 80 grams of mineral per day of the first supplement, that product will provide 120 mg of copper (1,500mg/kg x 0.08 kg). The second product label indicates that intake should be 90 grams per day, which would mean the second supplement provides 270 mg of copper.

Mineral supplements are an effective way to ensure beef cattle are meeting their requirements and optimizing production, whether they are grazing or being fed a total mixed ration. Paying attention to labels, the type and bioavailability of the product, being aware of potential antagonistic factors and monitoring intake will ensure producers provide adequate and effective macro and microminerals for their herd.
