Balairus Fuels Plaque Presentation

On February 11 Balairus Fuels was the recipient of the Industrial Development Incentive Program through Economic Development – therefore receiving two plaques. One was to show they were part of the program and one was the standard New Business Plaque. Councilors Kirby Whitlock, Kevin Martin, Robert Snow, and Economic Development Coordinator Mary Lee Prior attended to present the plaques.

Lloydminster Archives Week

The Lloydminster Museum and Archives held their annual Archives Week from February 7 to February 11. Archives week celebrates archive institutions throughout Saskatchewan and the hard work of archives, their staff and to bring awareness to the need to preserve documented history of their regions.

On February 7 the week was kicked off with the unveiling of the Archives Research Room which was also renamed to the Dr. Don Duncan Research Room in honour of its longstanding champion Dr. Don Duncan.

“It’s such an honour. We are so happy for Don that we could have this opportunity to name our research room after him. He’s been such an integral part of our organization, a really great leader and a cornerstone of our organization,” commented Archivist Corine Price.

February 8 attendees who registered could attend the workshop for a preservation tutorial, with the option to purchase a preservation kit.

February 9 the Archives held an informal open house and on February 10 a Digitization tutorial workshop was held which taught registered guests how to back up their family history. On the last day the door prize was drawn.

County Of Vermilion River Protective Services Update

The month of January was a slower month for the County of Vermilion River Protective Services.

According to their site, the County of Vermilion Protective Services were called out to approximately 44 calls for service.

The numbers totaled does not include calls received within the Town of Vermilion, Villages of Kitscoty, Marwayne and Paradise Valley. While fire calls were down in January with only one structure fire, repeated weather warnings, winter storms, freezing rain and rapid changing temperatures made road conditions extreme across the County several times in January. This caused a spike in Motor Vehicle Collisions.

Medical calls continued their upward climb It was reported that the County of Vermilion Protective Services received two vehicle fire calls, and three fire investigation calls in the month of January. As well there were one gas-electrical hazmat, one smoke investigation, three alarms, 11 motor vehicle collisions, four mutual aid requests- CVR, three regional assistance, three public assistance and 14 medical calls.

So far in the first two weeks of February it appears to be a little slower for the departments.

On Feb 2, tones dropped for a reported vehicle on fire and crews responded alongside RCMP to a vehicle south of Range Road 14, that had left the road and went into the ditch and was on fire. Firefighters extinguished the flames and searched for the driver who was not located. The RCMP were following up on the file. The same day a stranded motorist who ran into some trouble in the extreme cold weather called

911, firefighters responded and performed a medical assessment on the patients and kept them warm until they could be turned over to family.

February 3, the report of a possible structure fire sent Vermilion Fire & Rescue south of town and located the seat of the fire in the walls and floors near a fire place which was extinguished quickly. Fire Chief Anton Krys declared the scene under control at 11:02 p.m.

February 5, Marwayne Fire, Blackfoot Fire and Rescue, Kitscoty Fire Department, EMS and Kitscoty RCMP were called out in the early morning for a devasting house fire that left a family homeless in Sandy Beach.

Fire Chief Brad Parkinson (Blackfoot) was first on the scene and called for mutual aid from Britannia Fire Department and Legacy Regional Protective Services.

February 8, brought Vermlion Fire and Rescue, County #9-1 (Chief Hughes), RCMP, EMS, ATCO and CVR Gas out for a reported house fire south of Vermilion at 6:59 p.m. According to the County of Protective Services site, Chief Krys was first on-scene and reported a fully involved structure fire.

A water shuttle was established and crew worked quickly to bring the blaze under control. After confirming no one was inside, firefighters took a defensive posture while utility workers shut off gas and power to the building. Firefighters continued salvage and overhaul operations well into the night. Stop loss was declared around 12 a.m.

February 9, a semi truck carrying oil mats struck a light standard and spilled its load south of highway #16 and #897 at the Kitscoty corner closing traffic for a few hours and Kitscoty Fire, County 9-1, RCMP and Action Towing were called to the seen

On February 11, a single vehicle roll over sent Vermilion Fire & Rescue Society, EMS, RCMP and County #9-1 out the door at 11:26 a.m.

Crews arrived to a vehicle in the meridian on highway 16. Firefighters stabilized the scene and provided medical care until the arrival of EMS. One patient was transported to Vermilion Hospital with minor injuries.

On Feburary 11, “The County of Vermilion River Fire Services were mourning the loss of retired Fire Chief Headley Dennill of the Dewberry Fire Department.

On a brighter note, “The County of Vermilion River Protective Services Department received formal notification from the Governor General, on behalf of the Queen, advising of the awarding of the Peace Officer Exemplary Service Medals (POESM) has been approved for two of our County Peace Officers serving in our Public Safety Division: Sgt. Roland Feist (Ret’d) – Peace Officer Sgt. Christopher Garner, CD – Peace Officer.

The Peace Officer Exemplary Service Medal, created on June 22, 2004, recognizes peace officers who have served in an exemplary manner, characterized by good conduct, industry and efficiency.

Recipients of the Peace Officer Exemplary Service Medal (POESM) must have completed at least 20 years of exemplary service protecting the safety and security of the Canadian public with one or more organizations (federal, provincial or municipal).

We extend our congratulations to both officers. Medal ceremonies will be announced in the near future.”

Vermilion Tigers Present Coach With Award During Cold Lake Game

During the February 10 game, the Vermilion Tigers team presented coach Ryan Earl with the coach of the year award voted by the North Eastern Alberta Junior B Hockey League (NEAJBHL).

The award was presented to the coach briefly before the game began.

After the awards concluded it was business as usual, the players were all hyped up a n d r e ad y to p l ay a game of hockey. The first goal was scored by Evan Cooke, unassisted m i d way t h r o u g h t h e first period. The Tigers were absolutely playing their best as they seamlessly stitched their plays together. Though they

were playing fantastic, the other team was doing a good job of holding them back for the remainder of the first period.

In the second period, the players were in the zone, with Connor Roscoe and Max Quist making a great scoring duo. Quist scored the second goal for the Tigers with Roscoe on the assist, then Roscoe scored after with Quist on the assist.

NOWOSAD, Irma We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our Mother and Baba, Irma Nowosad, on February 5, 2022 at the age of 84.

Irma was born on October 5, 1937 in North Battleford , Saskatchewan.

She instilled in each of us her strength, the meaning of unconditional love and an unwavering faith.

Left to cherish her memory are her three children, Richard (Jeanine) Kormysh, Sharon (Louis) Kolla and Donna (Kevin) Cunningham; her seven grandchildren, Robyn, Julia, Jessica, and Randi Kormysh, Louis and Nicholas Kolla and Ashley Cunningham; her brother, Willis (Elfreida) Bossaer; her sister, Irene Rathke (Dave Inkster); four stepchildren; five step grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Predeceased by her first husband and father of her children, Peter Kormysh, her second husband, Anton (Tony) Nowosad; and her parents, Peter and Stefka Bossaer.

The family wishes to thank all of the staff at Lamont Health Care Centre for their kind and compassionate care. The family would also like to thank all who have reached out during this very difficult time.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, those who so wish may make memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society.

she had informed the County and the fire departments in the past of her intentions that one day she would burn the house and that she had planned on doing it last summer but due to the dry conditions it was not possible.

“I had spoken to the County before and they were aware that I had intentions of burning the house, the fire departments were aware that I had planned on burning the house, I explained my plan, I said I was going to walk through the house to make sure there was nobody in it.”

Charlene continued and explained that on the night of the incident, she received a phone call from one of the Constables around 4:15 p.m. inquiring if she knew where Mackenzie was, she said she didn’t know and that if she did know she would tell him.

According to Charlene, “he proceeded to give me heck and asked me why the house was still there and that the farm was going downhill fast!

After I got off the phone with the Constable and he had given me heck, I called one of my friends to drive me because my mind was full, but I was calm, and there was no drugs or alcohol involved. I got a jerry can of fuel, took two rags from the kitchen and three other cloths so I could pour gas on them. I went to the farm, and the RCMP were already on the road looking for my son, they said they couldn’t go in the gate that it was locked, the gate was not locked we opened it and went in, I did have a grinder with me so that if I had to grind the locks off I could. I called the police when I started the fire and I called the fire department, the only thing illegal was I didn’t have a burn permit. I went in with a clear mind, I checked the house, and the main thing on my mind was to make sure that I didn’t do damage to anybody, and that I didn’t hurt anybody. I checked the house, and I checked every bedroom and I yelled out. I went out and brought the jerry can in and put gas in the house and I lit the fire. I want to make it clear that Cory drove me there; he was in no way involved with lighting the fire! When I lit the fire I did not know there was a can of acetone in there, I believe that’s what blew me out of the house. I said I was going to stay until the fire was done so that again there was no liability. On the day of the fire, there was no wind, it wasn’t too cold for firefighters, and I had the fire contained to the best of my knowledge because I had never done anything like this before in my life. It’s probably the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do in my life, my kids grew up in that house, and pictures of my young children went through my head as I was watching this house burn.

The house was not habitable, I don’t know what kind of drugs were in there, so I didn’t want to just bulldoze it, I knew it just had to go, there are too many people in danger for high-speed chases, for guns, the constant traffic of Meth heads and criminal activity on a daily basis. It was our house to burn, there is no monetary value

in it because there was no insurance on the house. I made the right phone calls, I did not lie, and a lawyer would probably tell me not to say anything, but people were going to get hurt there, so I did it, I made sure there was nobody in the house beforehand.”

In a very emotional statement, Charlene said that she doesn’t want a pat on the back for what she did, and that the RCMP is tired and that they are spending our tax dollars chasing them and that one day someone will get shot.

“My son is a Meth head and I can’t and won’t make excuses, but he is still my son and I still love him. It’s hard to hear your child say that there is no way out of this for him, that the only way out is to get shot because he feels hopeless.

They say I’m an arsonist now, but I did what I thought was the best thing to do, but for someone who has never lit a fire like that in my life, they (fire department) say it was a clean fire. It caused zero harm to anyone and that was important to me, I would have sooner died than to hear that I hurt anybody. I don’t want anyone to feel sorry for me, other than my husband, who bought the farm when he was just 21 years old, I don’t regret doing it. I believe I did the right thing. You know my whole family is affected by this, my youngest son; they are trying to pull him into that world. My daughter feels the effects of it every day; my husband is suffering because of it. I did what everybody else said should be done, and said they would do but couldn’t do it, and if anybody thinks that I did that on impulse, I didn’t, this has played through my mind a hundred times since last year, I’m not a criminal.”

There are stories similar to Charlene’s that are not easy to hear or read about, but as Charlene said during our conversation, “COVID is not the pandemic, drugs and the world it entails is a much bigger pandemic that needs to be seriously addressed in society.

This world needs to change, it has to change before my son or someone else’s child gets killed next time. I know many people will judge me for what I did and our lives because our child has a drug problem and have committed crimes, I am not perfect, we all have imperfect lives and I wish as a community we could all open up and start talking seriously about the issues of drug abuse and crime as a community because that is the only way we can help fix this problem,” commented Charlene.

W h e n Ver m i l i o n was formed, it was just a small community that was growing at a good pace thanks to the railroad. As with so many communities of that era, the railroad was the most important employer for the community and the literal lifeblood of Vermilion.

In 1907, the Canadian National Railway linked Vermilion with Edmonton and Lloydminster. The railroad had been built two years previous and as soon as the train was running, people were getting off at Vermilion to set up their lives. Some came to set up businesses, others came to homestead and till the soil. Along the way, construction trains routinely came through to continue to link all the communities in the area with Vermilion, the divisional point.

I often choose to buy the frozen, wild caught salmon, and I put the frozen filet in the pan, and it quickly defrosts and cooks.

Almost ever yone is familiar with photo editing, which has been accessible for more than two decades. But video editing on the other hand has often been something only a select few had the knowledge and talent to successfully pull off.

Often referred to as CGI, it allows people to add objects to videos that did not exist before. Though due to the tedious methods used and unintuitive learning experience for the industry-leading tools very few people know how to create convincing CGI. But now, with advancements from some Artificial Intelligence software, things are beginnig to change.

DeepFake is the name of the aforementioned technology, it is an AI (artificial intelligence) program that creates videos where

This Valentine’s Day morning didn’t find me arranging a dozen red roses, scarfing treats from a heart-shaped box of chocolates, or opening expensive gifts. Nope. I spent it as I do so many others: driving a school bus.

Videos Are Not Tamper Proof

This new software while not exactly the most accessible for those without a pc, is actually quite easy to use for any avid tech user. The program acts mostly autonomously, only requiring images of both the person in the video and the person whom you wish to switch them with.

Once enough images are acquired the program will begin training on the data and start the process of ‘Learning’ the faces. It does this by attempting a face swap that is not expected to actually look good, it then uses the data from that first attempt to make adjustments, iterating throughout the whole process until the output video looks real and accurately depicts the new face in every frame.

This technology is already being used in shows and movies such as the Disney + series the book of Boba Fett. In fact, swapping a face is one of the most difficult things

to do with traditional CGI, most artists are videos of celebrities, and politicians doing not able to create a good-looking swap by and saying things they had never said or hand. Also, weather conditions have lately made the roads somewhat challenging, which further adds to the excitement of each new dawn.

One afternoon, we came over a rise to see that a semi hadn’t made the turn and had hit the ditch on the opposite side of the slippery road. As the trailer completely blocked our path, I was forced to back up about two kilometers before I could turn around. Fun stuff.

This past week my S Endorsement, the license allowing me to drive a school bus, came up for renewal. It expires every five years. There are three written tests to be passed, a circle check completed, and an examiner assesses my driving. This was all managed successfully, despite the bitter cold of the day. I was pleased because five

Others might not be so generous as to call it bundling up. These other people, specifically known as Brandi, my co-worker and friend, openly mock my extra clothing.

But, back to the story. During my examination, when it came time to check the oil, I placed one foot on the bumper for leverage, grasped the hood, and hauled it back. Unfortunately, my movements were restricted (due to the wearing of four pairs

of pants, three sweaters, and an oversized coat belonging to my father). As a result, I lost my balance and went over with the hood to land flat on my back in the street.

Not the best way to impress a driving examiner.

This year the tests went off without a hitch. No nasty tumble onto the pavement, and my husband Tom went along and got his S Endorsement too. In the days before his exam I drilled him on bus checks, safety rules and ordered him about on a practice drive. (Secretly I have to admit to finding a certain satisfaction in telling the man where to go and how to get there.)

Grants To Support First Responders Mental Health Awarded

While staff shortages and long ambulance response times continue to plague the province and take its toll on emergency health-care workers, the provincial government announced 11 recipients of the first round of Supporting Psychological Health in First Responders program funding. The four non-profit organizations and seven researchers will be utilizing $1.48 million in grants to provide support services for first responders and emergency health-care workers living with or at risk of developing post-traumatic stress injuries (PTSI). Peer support and resilience training for workers and caregivers to deal with or prevent PTSIs are the primary services being delivered, and the grants also support applied research to develop and evaluate the most effec-

It didn’t take long before we had come to understand that we shared similar concerns. I was pleased to learn that our shared frustration wasn’t really about “Freedom”, but about the increasing sense of powerlessness; a feeling of being lied to, manipulated, gaslit, and ignored by the elected members of all levels of government, and possibly even the Media. The word “Freedom” never came up, even though the signs they held and the loud truck that was driving up and down Main Street proclaimed it boldly. Two weeks ago, the Voice ran an article discussing the National Police Federation’s KeepAlbertaRCMP campaign.

In this issue, Lloydminster-VermilionWainwright MLA Garth Rowswell, provides some insight about the province’s considerations towards establishing a provincial police service as suggested by the Fair Deal Panel in 2020.

At present, one-third of Alberta’s communities are policed by RCMP detachments, which is 47 communities having municipal policing agreements with the RCMP. The model being researched by the Alberta Provincial Police Service transition study report will primarily be directed toward policing arrangements in these communities.

Many Cities (e.g. Edmonton, Calgary, Lethbridge etc.) already operate and manage their own independent police service.

Some of the potential changes that the model proposes includes the ability for the province to incorporate social and mental health professionals in front line police response, less transferring of officers between detachments/stations, and using a governance model that increases provincial police’s accountability to local priorities and policing needs, including dedicated Indigineous representation.

rural Alberta and what are we going to do about it. This is one option. Our sole aim is to improve policing services for all Albertans. If that can be achieved by improving the existing service we receive from an already stretched RCMP, then we could try to do that. Otherwise, we should not be afraid to examine and ask for a more fundamental change.”

This not an overnight process, the report contains milestones and a timeline to follow, which looks at a mid-2025 implementation of provincial policing.

The government is not determined on any definitive course at present. It acknowledges that the report itself states further research and feedback needs to be gathered. The need for input from municipalities, community organizations, and the

general public still needs to be gathered and discussed. A public survey will be available in 2022 to correspond with the inputs from community stakeholders.

Sage Apparel Opens In The Vermilion RCMP Investigate Craig’s Cornerstone Arson To Rural Property

On February 1, Paige Jaremco opened the doors of Sage Apparel in the back of the Craig’s Cornerstone building. The owner of MACK Clothing for Kids decided to undertake this new business venture when the owner of Fresh Apparel Mel Cusack announced she would be leaving the area this summer.

Sage Apparel offers mens and ladies clothing for all ages, and a great many

of the selections are the same brand names as the clothing in MACK clothing.

All of the staff that worked for Cusak have remained on as well, so there are plenty of familiar faces to help customers with their shopping needs.

Jaremco is very excited for this new adventure, “I grew up here and am invested in the community and I want to see it thrive. I am excited to support the community as they have supported us over the years.”

Vermilion RCMP Submitted

County of Vermilion River, Alta. - On Feb. 8, 2022, at about 6:20 p.m., Vermillion RCMP responded to a call of suspicious activity at a residence on Township Road 490 in the County of Vermilion River. Upon arrival, responding officers observed a male and female suspect exiting the residence. As the suspects were leaving a small explosion occurred and the house became engulfed in flames.

As a result of the explosion one of the suspects was knocked to the ground.

The male and female were immediately arrested. No responding officer or suspects were injured. Vermilion RCMP confirmed there were no occupants in the residence.

Officers at the scene noted several stolen items. Subsequently the Vermilion RCMP obtained a warrant to search the property.

Vermilion RCMP and County of Vermilion River Fire Investigator continue to investigate and remain on the scene.

Vermilion RCMP have charged Charlene Young (55) and Cory Nydokus (50) with: • Arson under Section 434.1 of the Criminal Code Both Young and Nydokus have had a judicial hearing and have been released with conditions. They are scheduled to attend court on Mar. 7, 2022 in Vermilion Provincial Court.

As this matter is before the court not further details can be released.

On February 8 Premier Jason Kenney, Minister of Health Jason Copping took to the podium to explain the layout of the tentative three-step plan for Alberta to return to normal.

Kenney stated that beginning February 8 at 11:59 Step one would come into effect. The Alberta Restriction Exemption Program is no longer in effect, along with most associated restrictions. It was also said entertainment venues would continue with some specific rules in places such as restrictions on closing times, alcohol service, table capacity in restaurants and interactive activities will remain in place but restrictions on sale of food and beverages and consumption while seated in an audience setting was removed. All businesses, venues and facilities whether or not they were eligible for the REP or not capacity limits are removed, except for facilities with capacity of 500 to 1000 they are limited to 500 and those facilities with capacity over 1000 are limited to 50 per cent.

As of 11:59 p.m. on February 13 masking for children aged 12 and under are no longer required to mask in any setting and children and youth in schools are currently not required to wear masks.

Kenney also noted that if hospitalizations continue to trend down as of March 1 step two will be implemented and the following restriction will be removed: any

remaining provincial school requirements, including cohorting will be removed, youth activities will no longer be required to screen prior to the youth activities.

Capacity limits for all venues will be lifted, social gathering limits will be removed, as well as the provincial mask mandates and the mandatory work from home.

The date for Step Three has yet to be announced and will depend on whether the hospitalizations continue to be on a downward trend and will look at removing COVID-specific measures in continuing care and mandatory isolation will become a recommendation only. Details on all restrictions and measures in place will be released prior to each step at Alberta.ca/ CovidMeasures.

Premier Kenney says now that Alberta is through the worst of the fifth wave and have achieved high vaccination rates, it is time to shift to a balanced approach where Albertans are able to live with COVID-19 and return to normal.

“The last two years have taken a significant toll on Albertans’ overall health, social and economic well-being,” said Kenney.

Health Minister Jason Copping echoed Kenney by saying that with a vast majority of Albertans being fully vaccinated it is that which allows them to ease restrictions.

“It’s a major factor… but we will do so only as conditions show that our health system’s capacity is recovering. Albertans can help make that possible by getting every vaccine dose t h ey a r e e l i g i b l e f o r,” c o m m e n t e d Copping.

There is something else that I would like to bring attention to.

I know there have been a lot of comparisons to things happening in terms of current and recent events of cataloging everyone (vax pass), restricting movements, removing freedom of choice and the Holocaust.

That terrible time in history also started somewhere. We as a generation not living at the time can look back at it and say “that’s crazy! Why didn’t anyone do anything? Why didn’t the people stand together? For each other?” We are reliving that time now. Talk to anyone on the street and ask them how they feel, they shrug their shoulders and say “it’s not that bad, what do you do?” This is a response of defeat and simply complying instead of actually taking stock of what is actually happening! Health Canada gives the vaccines full approval and says they are no longer being administered under the emergency measures act. Then why do we still have mandates? Why are we still trying to force something on the people that is proven will not make a substantial difference? Mandates should only be in effect in emergency situations. With serious infections on the decline, the state of emergency is over. The problem of low staffing and hospitals over capacity is an issue that has been brought on over the last 30 yrs with so many hospitals being closed and an increasing population. It’s an infrastructure problem, not a COVID problem!!

The restaurant across the street from us and so many others have been strangled by the same government that expects it to pay taxes and continue to be a source of revenue for it. This is wrong and unjust! We now have a voice on the doorstep of the government that has the grip around our necks.

Now is the time to stand together and speak up against when we witness wrongdoings towards our neighbours, within our communities, provinces and country!

Over the last two years we have seen members of our communities and business communities singled out and shut down with no just cause other than they fell under the Alberta Health regulations. Hair salons, tattoo shops, and restaurants are where COVID spreads apparently, and only if you are standing and the risk increases after 11 p.m.

There will never be a better time to stand with our neighbours and businesses and not allow them to be singled out and crushed. So many small businesses have been forced to close their doors, commercial properties for sale and with that, corresponding residential property also comes up for sale.

This freedom movement is not about vax or not, this is about choice. This is about the

We had our halfway celebration for Accelerated Reading on February 3.

Students and staff showed up dressed as characters from Robert Munsch books.

Students had the opportunity to watch and listen to several Robert Munsch stories, read by various VES staff, BTPS board members and central office staff. There were various activities throughout the day that related to Robert Munsch.

The 2022 VES Science Fair showcased a variety of topics. Projects were very well done and students could confidently explain their projects. Out of 18 projects entered this year, 14 received a mark of excellence (80% or higher). Way to go everyone. A special thank you goes out to Mr. Faull for judging all of these amazing projects.

On February 8, we had our assem-

bly. After the land acknowledgement and the singing of O Canada, Mr. Haslehurst shared that students have read a total of 7141 points to date in AR, with 1027.8 of them coming in January. The division 1 top reader was Gavin Zaharko and in division 2, it was Grace Freeman. Congratulations to both students. Mrs. Moses discussed our February virtue of trustworthiness and Mrs. Doherty showed us a video on that topic. Mrs. Joa acknowledged the students and staff who were wearing all one color or a rainbow of colors for our spirit dress up day. Mrs. Joa also told us about how we are going to be making another community connection by bringing in food items from February 14-25 to be donated to our local food bank. We ended the virtual assembly with an activity break.

Airport Continues To Serve Vermilion Community

Submitted During the past two years of the pandemic, the Vermilion Municipal Airport has served as a vital and life-saving link between Vermilion and other Alberta Health Services. Residents living near the airport have become familiar with the distinctive whine of turboprop engines as Alberta Health Services Medevac planes came in to land. Flights occurred regularly during the height of the Delta variant surge. The distinctive sound of these planes taking off again told of the transfer of another patient to or from Edmonton hospitals. Each patient transferred was immediately in the care of highly trained Aeromedical teams, able to administer care for very ill or just recovering patients. According to Alberta Health records, between April 1, 2019 and September 30, 2021 there were 36 patients transported out for care and 13 patients transported to Vermilion.

While many people think of Air Ambulance as being by STARS Helicopter, there is a fleet of 11 fixed-wing turboprop Beechcraft King Air 250 airplanes serving Alberta as well. These aircraft are crewed

by highly trained Paramedic and Advanced Life Support teams. During COVID, these planes have been used to transfer patients who could not have been safely transferred by other means. These flights provided time for hard-pressed ground ambulances to make other critical patient transfers. Vermilion was very fortunate to have a runway that could accommodate these critical flights.

The Vermilion Airport has been a vital infrastructure for this community since early in the history of the town. An airfield operated from 1931 on. Major improvements were made in 1946, with two grass runways and a Radio Range Station. While its first purpose was to serve navigational services to aircraft travelling to Edmonton, it later served as a depot for air delivery of the mail, and safe transport for bank deposits.

As highways improved and ground travel became more available, these functions were taken up by road transport. The airport is also an important base of operations for agricultural flying for the surrounding farming community.

Interest in the airport as a vital part of community infrastructure was renewed

in the mid-1970’s, with community leaders such as Floyd Sweet and George Daugela actively promoting civic interest.

The current airport, with terminal building and paved, lighted runway was opened in 1976. A number of private hangars were built, and the airport became home to the active Vermilion River Flying Club, which supports local aviation activities. Recent activity at the airport includes a new aviation fuel facility and an aircraft maintenance

and restoration business. This is encouraging activity locally, and bringing planes from other areas, with valuable spin-offs for Vermilion businesses. The Vermilion River Flying Club, revived 2018, promotes recreational and agricultural flying, and has 15 active members. Historically, Vermilion has always been forward-looking with regard to local air access. The town and surrounding area of Vermilion continues to be wellserved by its airport.

Calf 911 – How To Spot Dehydration In Young Or Scouring Calves

It’s a great feeling when a calf arrives on the ground safe and sound. Ideally, things go well, and cows and newborn calves thrive. However, it’s important for producers to take the time to look for signs of early illness in neonatal calves.

Being able to recognize the symptoms of disease and dehydration in baby calves is a simple and effective practice that can make a big mark on your bottom line.

Calves with scours are at a high risk for dehydration and hypothermia. When calves infected with neonatal scours die, it is ultimately because of dehydration, not the pathogens that cause the disease. Having practices in place on your operation to identify, manage and rehydrate calves suffering from scours or other causes of dehydration can increase the chance of recovery and optimize the health and wellbeing of young calves.

Here are some steps producers can use to evaluate the dehydration and health status of young calves: Perform a skin-tent test by pinching the skin over the neck and pulling gently to make a tent, then count how many seconds it takes for the skin to return to normal.

Look for behavior cues in the herd, such as a calf that is not stretching

when rising or a cow bawling for a calf or showing a full udder, indicating the calf is not nursing.

Watch for calves with drooping ears.

Be aware of the link between dehydration and hypothermia or cold exposure; Look for sunken or recessed eyes.

Watch for depression or lethargy in calves.

Be on the lookout for calves that stagger or have poor balance.

Pay attention to calves with weak or unrhythmic suckle reflex.

There are three degrees of dehydration: mild, moderate and severe. In some cases, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance and acidosis may be occurring at once.

The treatment for a dehydrated calf will depend on the severity of dehydration and other variables. Typically, this will be done with oral fluids and an electrolyte solution. Severe cases may call for intravenous (IV) fluids and potentially sodium bicarbonate (delivered through IV or orally depending on the severity of acidosis). Fluids should be given continuously until scouring stops. Even for healthy-looking calves, there is still a risk for dehydration if diarrhea persists.

to consider while evaluating dehydration.

Having the ability to accurately classify the level of dehydration is key to communicating with your veterinarian and developing a successful treatment plan: Early intervention is key!

An in-field test called the “skin tent” can be used to evaluate dehydration.

In healthy calves, the skin will return to normal in two seconds. Anything longer is a sign that the calf is dehydrated and should be treated with electrolytes.

A calf will appear normal until they are about 6% dehydrated.

W h e n c a l ve s a r e m i l d l y d e hy drated, symptoms such as sunken eyes and a skin-tent test of two to four seconds will occur. These calves will still have a suckle reflex, which can be tested by placing two fingers in a calf’s mouth to see if they will suck. Mild dehydration can be treated with oral fluids such as an electrolyte solution and have a high likelihood of a full recovery.

Calves coping with moderate dehydration will spend a lot of time lying down, will not stretch when forced to rise, have a prolonged skin tent test (four to six seconds) and sunken eyes. These calves need to have oral fluids frequently throughout the day, until all symptoms are resolved, and need to be monitored closely.

have a skin-tent test that lasts six or more seconds. These calves will be unable to stand, have extremely su nke n eye s a n d w ill r e q uir e I V fluids with the help of a veterinarian. These calves, if they recover, will be more likely to have health problems such as pneumonia, reoccurring scours and other problems in the future.

Most electroly te solutions are designed to replace the electrolytes that are rapidly leaving the calf’s body due to diarrhea. Be sure to select a product that contains sodium chloride or salt (NaCl), Potassium (K), an energy source like glucose and amino acids like glycine or alanine. Other ingredients may include acetate or propionate to help the calf retain sodium and water, correct electrolyte imbalances and potentially prevent acidosis. Work with your veterinarian to choose an electrolyte product that will work for you.

It is impor tant to alternate feeding fluids and milk throughout the day because electrolyte powders don’t provide the energy that milk does. Milk can come from the dam or from a milk replacer product.

Always keep separate bottles and tube feeders for scouring calves and healthy calves requiring colostrum. Be sure to clean and disinfect all feeding equipment after each use. (cont. page 13)

Monitor this by taking the rectal temperature frequently and provide an alternate source of heat (i.e., hot box and warm fluids) if they are unable to maintain adequate body temperature.

February Gardening: Starting Seeds Indoors

If you look around on your nex t trip to the hardware store, chances are you will notice that the gardening section is star ting to appear in stages. These past couple of weeks has seen the seed stands appear out of nowhere in many stores. Yes it is time to start thinking about starting some plants indoors.

There are several things to keep in mind when starting seedlings for your yard or garden. Not only do you have to plant seeds at the right time - too early, and your plants will be too large before they can go outside, too late and they won’t have enough time in our short season to mature, but you have to use the right container, have an effective amount of natural or artificial sunlight, and the right type of nutrient rich soil for seedlings. Don’t forget to water properly - not too much or too little and then of course there will be the transplanting to bigger containers or outside when the time is right.

While all of that sounds overwhelming to a new gardener, it actually isn’t as complicated as it sounds, and there are tons of resources out there to help even experienced gardening gurus have a successful growing season.

Calf 911 – The Ins And Outs Of Esophageal Feeding

While the goal is to always have vigorous calves that nurse right away, and maternal cows that bring them up right, illness and suckling issues can be a reality. Esophageal feeding, also known as “ tube feeding ” or “stomach feeding,” is essential when a calf requires colostrum or if you are treating dehydration in a sick calf. Knowing how to properly tube feed a calf is critical to help support calves when they are at their most vulnerable. Here are a few tips to consider while tube feeding calves: A l w a ys h av e t w o e s o p h a g e a l f e e d e r s: o n e d e s i g n ate d fo r s i c k calves and the other for feeding colostrum to healthy calves. This will prevent disease and pathogen transmission from sick to healthy calves.

Prevent aspiration (fluid in the lungs) with proper positioning. The calf can be standing, sitting or lying down with the head in a neutral position above the stomach.

Open the mouth and pass the empty tube over the tongue to the back of the

mouth. Allow the calf to swallow the tube so that it easily passes into the esophagus.

NEVER force the tube down. If there is resistance, pull the tube out and try again.

Remember the “Two-Tube Rule”: Once the tube is placed, you should be able to easily palpate both the rigid, enlarged esophagus and the rings of the trachea (windpipe). If both cannot be felt, you do not have proper positioning. Remove the tube and start again.

Liquid being fed should always be at body temperature or 38°C (100°F) to prevent shock in an already weak calf.

Allow the feeder to empty slowly.

This can take upwards of three minutes.

Slow feeding will reduce the risk of regurgitation, preventing aspiration into the lungs.

Clip or kink the tube after feeding to preve nt exc e s s flui d s fro m draining as the tube is being pulled out.

Not doing this could result in aspiration (fluid in the lungs).

Clean and sanitize the tube and feeding apparatus after every feeding.

It can be stressful when a calf needs to be tube fed. However, understanding proper technique and the physiology behind it can not only save lives, but also will improve the overall health

and start breathing. Be careful not to fill the ear with water as this could cause an ear infection.

Consider giving a pain control product, such as meloxicam, to cows and calves after a difficult birth. Recent work at the University of Calgary showed slight statistical improvements in weight gain during the first week of life. Furthermore, without being told which calves had received the pain control product, producers were able to identify calves that had received the pain control product. They noted that these calves appeared brighter, mothered up faster, and were let out of the barn sooner.

When newborn calves don’t get off to a healthy start, it can be stressful. However, these techniques will allow farmers to know how to respond quickly and provide timely care and attention to newborn calves that need resuscitation.

Calf 911 – How To Manage Colostrum To Allow Newborn Calves To Thrive

Calves that are born unassisted and uncompromised will typically stand and nurse from their mothers within one to two hours after birth. However, calves that experience a difficult or prolonged birth, have a swollen tongue, experience hypothermia or are a twin may be less vigorous and unable to stand and nurse during that critical period. A cow with a large udder, poor udder suspension and/ or large teats may also limit a calf’s ability to receive adequate colostrum.

It is crucial for producers to observe newborn calves to make sure they have received colostrum and to intervene if necessary. Look closely to see if any of the cow’s teats have been suckled, feel if the calf’s belly is full and check the hooves to see if the rubbery capsule has been worn off to indicate standing.

Checking a calf’s suckle reflex by sticking your fingers in the calf’s mouth is also a simple indicator to demonstrate whether the suckle reflex is weak and the calf needs to be supplemented with colostrum.

Considerations when feeding a calf colostrum: Early intervention is key. Antibody absorption drops af ter six hours following birth, and by hour 12, the gut capacity to absorb antibodies drops by half. After 24 hours, the calf’s gut will be “closed” and no longer allows passing of antibodies through the gut lining.

Beef calves should receive at l ea st t wo li t r e s (or 8. 5 c u p s; 0. 5 gallons) of colostrum within the first two hours of being born. If feeding colostrum, ensure it is warmed to 38°C (100°F).

Some colostrum is better than none.

If you think a calf has not received c o l o s tr u m a n d yo u ar e w i t h i n t h e 24-hour window, provide it. After 24 hours, any colostrum that is fed will not be absorbed and is a waste of good quality IgG. Always attempt feeding colostrum by bottle first, which allows colostrum to enter the abomasum where antibody absorption is maximized. In contrast, tube feeding first places colostrum in the rumen, where antibody absorption is limited, and colostrum only reaches the abomasum once the rumen overflows.

trum can be milked from the newly calved cow or collected from another cow on-farm and frozen and stored for up to one year. This ensures the colostrum received provides immunity to the calf from diseases that are specific to that farm and the calf’s environment while maintaining a closed herd.

DON’T feed calves colostrum from other farms because of the risk of disease transmission like E. coli, Salmonella spp., Mycoplasma bovis and MAP (Mycobacterium avium paratuberculosis, the precursor to Johne’s disease).

Store by freezing colostrum in a large Ziplock bag, laying it flat. Be sure to label the bags and use within a year of storage.
