Jim Smith Memorial Bonspiel Brings Youth Curlers To Vermilion

If you are a curling enthusiast then February and March are made just for you. There is normally plenty of curling action this time of year, and even a little extra this season with the Olympics to fill the time between the Scotties Tournament and the Brier. Locally, it is the height of the bonspiel season, and one of Vermilion’s curling highlights is the Jim Smith Memorial Bonspiel.

This past weekend saw teens from all around the area come to Vermilion to have fun and showcase their skills.

On Saturday, which was Curling Day in Canada, the Vermilion Curling Rink saw some fabulous curling with two divisions of curlers hitting the ice. In the

Junior High division, the Kamdyn Bauldic team dominated with 36 points overall, with the two teams from Provost tying for second place. In the Senior High division, the Morgan Ward team from Irma took first place with 32 points narrowly outscoring Vermilion’s Peyton DeRoo team.

The Kamdyn Bauldic team consisting of 3rd Aila Quiring, 2nd Libby Sherbinin, Lead M ar is a Lilienskol d and Sk ip Kamdyn were the overall winners this year.

This year the bonspiel had two prize draws. One for curlers and one for anyone who wanted to participate. The Loonie Broom winner was Shelley Larson, she took home a new broom and half the proceeds from the draw. This year the

Town Council Update

Vermilion’s Town Council held a regular meeting on February 1, here are some of the highlights. At present, council meetings are available to the public by electronic means only as per COVID-19 Recommendations as per Public Meeting Procedures (COVID19 Suppression) Regulation. You can continue to watch Council meetings through the Town’s YouTube channel which you can access through their website. The nex t regular Counc il meeting is February 15, at 7 p.m.

The Town’s new Director of Infrastructure and Planning Services, Mr. Benjamin McPhee was introduced to the council and viewers. He began his new role the week of January 31.

Town Council Begins Strategic Planning

Town Coun c illor s will beg in the process of strategic planning February 10, 11 and 12. Working with Sage Analytics, councillors, along with some town directors and staff, will be drafting and planning their vision for the future of Vermilion as well as identify the goals and objectives for the council while they are in office. Usually this process also includes establishing the priority of those goals so that the council is able to reach its vision and adhere to its mission statement.

All municipalities in Alberta establish and write strategic plans after every municipal election, and often new councils will build on the actions of the previous plan as well as adding new actions

to suit changes in the community that may have occurred.

So what makes a good strategic plan?

Well, that depends a little on the model an organization follows. Some say there are only three steps to follow to create an effective strategic plan, and others believe there are five or even seven things that need to be done.

All templates do agree that an organization must have a vision and mission statement to adhere to in order to establish an effective and achievable strategic plan. The second thing many successful plans also do is get input from those who the plan can impact. In the case of a municipality, that would be the residents of the community.

The Town of Vermilion recognizes the valuable insights that residents have

about the community and its potential for change and growth. Residents are invited to let the council know if there are things they would like them to consider and take into account while working on the plan. This can include things like accessibility to places, safety measures, infrastructure challenges, new businesses they would like to see and even utility expenses. The plan is an ongoing working document, and takes some time to put together, so residents have some time to submit their thoughts.

In order to identify some of the present needs, potential challenges and positives of an organisation or community, a strategic planning session should in c lud e a streng ths, weak nes ses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) analysis. This analysis allows planners to

identify and prioritise what needs to be considered when creating their action plan. Strategic plans are meant to look at all aspects of an organisation, and a SWOT is a concise way to not miss anything.

Municipal strategic plans are not a secret document kept under lock and key, they are public knowledge and accessible to residents of a community. The plan created by the previous council is available for viewing on the Town’s website, showing everything that the last council was looking to accomplish or continue. It is worth checking out if you have things you would like the new council to consider in their planning sessions, as it may have been something the last council had already started looking into.

February Is Black History Month

The first petition to introduce Black History month was presented by the Ontario Black History Society (OBHS) by its founders Dr. Daniel G. Hill and Wilson O. Brooks in 1978 to the City of Toronto. In 1979 the first-ever Canadian proclamation was issued by Toronto. In 1988 Nova Scotia observed its first Black History Month and it was later renamed to African Heritage Month in 1996.

In 1993, the OBHS filed a petition in Ontario to proclaim February as Black History Month and with its success; Rosemary Sadlier who was the president of the OBHS brought forth the idea of having the month recognized across Canada. She presented the idea to the Honourable Jean Augustine, the first Black Canadian woman to be elected to Parliament. Following a motion introduced

by Dr. Augustine, the House of Commons carried the motion unanimously in December of 1995. The first Black man appointed to Senate was Senator Donald Oliver and he introduced the motion to recognize contributions of Black Canadians and February as Black History Month in February 2008. The adoption of the motion completed Canada’s parliamentary position on Black History Month.

It’s about celebrating the resilience, achievements and contributions of Black Canadians and their

communities who have throughout history have done so much to make Canada the culturally diverse, compassionate, and prosperous nation it is today.

The site also says that Black people and their communities have been a part of shaping Canada’s heritage since the arrival of Mathieu Da Costa who was a navigator and interpreter, whose presence in Canada dates back to the early 1600’s, and that there is very little mention of the loyalist who came to Canada after the American Revolution and settled in the Maritimes were of African descent. Many sacrifices made in wartime were soldiers of African descent as far back as the War of 1812. It is also mentioned that many Canadians are not aware that Black people were once enslaved in the territory that is now Canada, and how those that fought enslavement helped lay the foundation of the diverse and inclusive society we now have in Canada.

On the website there is a section that lists 61 other historical Black noteworthy figures who have helped shape Canadian heritage and identity, who have made and continue to make enormous contributions to all sectors of society in Canada.

Premier Jason Kenny also recognized Black History Month and stated, “Alberta’s Black history is a rich tapestry of Alberta’s story, stories of leadership, entrepreneurship and centuries of love and friendship that span our province. It is a story of

men and women of diverse and rich backgrounds who have all joined together to be a part of the province we cherish today. This month is also a time to reflect on the challenges and the progress that needs to be made – of confronting racism, challenging discrimination and strengthening Alberta’s equality of opportunity for all Albertans. But above all, it is a story of strength during adversity, of challenging the status quo and forging new triumphs. The names of the champions are icons of victory; names like Violet King Henry and John Ware, but are numerous beyond counting. On behalf of the Government of Alberta, I invite all Albertans to celebrate their stories and join me in celebrating Black History Month.”

Mason L. Curtis Mason Curtis passed away in Vermilion, Alberta on January 26, 2022 at the age of 85 years.

Mason was born to Alvin and Jessie Curtis in Elk Point, Alberta on August 5, 1936. He grew up on the family farm and went to a country school named Ellsworth. He went to the Vermilion School of Agriculture (now Lakeland College) for a year, then hired on at Mix the Mower in Vermilion working heavy construction.

After ten years with Mix, he went to NAIT and studied to become an auto mechanic. He worked for Chev-Olds dealerships for 35 years.

During his time with Mix the Mower, he met a Grade 6 teacher, Edna Svean. They were married on August 4, 1962. Mason dug the basement for their new home. After 1½ years in a small apartment, they moved into the home they lived in for 58 years. They had two children. Lyle Wade was born February 19, 1967 and Brenda Marlene was born January 1, 1970. They both attended Vermilion Schools through Grade 12. Lyle became a doctor but sadly passed away in 1995. Brenda became an X-ray Technologist and has worked in the profession for over 30 years. She married and has two children, Jeremy Patrick and Logan Anthony. She has since divorced.

Mason was an excellent husband, father and grandfather. As the kids grew up, they spent most weekends at a lake. Mason and the kids rode water skis while Edna drove the boat. They also had two big holidays – Disney World and Disneyland. His grandsons remember trips to the lake and the Rockies, as well as quiet times at home.

After he retired, Mason needed to keep busy so he built himself a little shop. He fixed lawn mowers, roto-tillers, snow blowers, etc. for over 20 years. Mason and Edna had some wonderful trips – Alaska, Australia and New Zealand, Hawaii, and across Canada with the truck and 5th wheel.

Mason leaves to mourn his passing, Edna his wife of 59 years, Brenda his daughter, and two grandsons Jeremy and Logan; sisters Lila Holden and Elaine Gunderson; brothers Al Curtis and Stan (Inez) Curtis; sisters-in-law Irene Knowlson, Gladys Roebuck, and Barbara (Gordon) Brassington; brother-in-law Alan (Dianne) Svean; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his son Lyle; his parents Alvin and Jessie Curtis; his parents-in-law Conrad and Olive Svean; his siblings-in-law Norman Gunderson, Marj Curtis, Archer Holden, Harold Roebuck, and John Knowlson.

A memorial was held at the First United Church in Vermilion on Monday, January 31, 2022 at 2 pm with Reverend Trust Igbekele Oluwayemi and Karen Selte officiating. The organist was Glen Teasdale. Hymns were “In the Garden” and “One Day at a Time”. Recorded solo was “Wind Beneath My Wings”.

Depending on the sport, athletes require different combinations of carbohydrates, proteins and vegetables - the three main nutritional components of a balanced, healthy diet.

Freestyle Skiing Freest yle skiing is a skiing discipline which includes aerial flips and spins, moguls and sliding rails and boxes on their skis. Freestyle skiers need to be strong yet also nimble in the air.

Most freest yle skiers need to consume between 35 and 45 calories per kg of the athlete’s weight. Exper ts recommend that their meal plan is primarily made up of carbohydrates [38%] and vegetables [38%] plus a smaller amount of protein rich foods [24%].

Competition day can affect an athlete’s meal plan too. Martin Fréchette, Sport Dietitian for shor t track speed skating at Speed Skating Canada, advises his athletes to fill their plates differently for standard training days versus competition days.

O n c o m p e t i t i o n d ay s , O l y m p i c at h l e te s should up their carbohydrate intake to 50% and decrease protein to 20%. Protein is difficult to digest and the athletes are in need of a lot of energy, so a higher carb ratio is better.

Both the Premiers of Saskatchewan and Alberta are in discussions of lifting all the mandates and restrictions to do with Covid 19. The MLAs need e-mails of support in lifting the mandates. Now is the time in history to lift a finger, and take a minute to hammer out an email to your MLA. Without the support of the people in their riding and contingency, they are not able to act on your wishes. It is very easy to look up their e-mail address on google, and then send them a polite request, for all covid 19 mandates and restrictions to be lifted. ewan side of Lloydminster your MLA is Colleen Young. Many people have never exercised their right to contact their MLA, but in situations like what our whole country is in, MLAs need us to make the effort.

Canada needs our effort. I am hoping for an end to all the mandates, and that we can celebrate as a country, that they are lifted. Today the truckers are being denied access to fuel in Ottawa, and their Go Fund Me account will not be released.

Many prayers are needed.

In keeping with the theme of the truckers and farmers fighting for the freedom of Canada, and the long distances so many traveled, here is a recipe for wheel shaped cakes! Here are a few tips for successful baked donut making. Only fill the tin 2/3 full, because if you do more, the doughnut raises so much that you lose the hole in the center. The oven must be preheated, and then left for five minutes longer, to really get it hot, before you pop the doughnuts in. If you put the icing on

when they are fresh out of the oven and still hot, it melts into the doughnut, and drip down the sides and looks like the icing at a professional doughnut shop. I used a butter cream icing successfully. If you wait to ice the doughnuts until after they have cooled, the icing looks more like when you ice a cake. If you do this method you can add sprinkles right away, as the icing will set up in 2 – 5 minutes.

You can add some cocoa powder to a basic butter cream icing to create a yummy chocolate fudge icing. It can be great fun to decorate the doughnuts. You can also shake the cooked doughnuts in a cinnamon and sugar mixture, brush the cooked doughnut with a light coat of melted butter and them shake them, one at a time in a plastic or paper bag of sugar and cinnamon. Another doughnut finish is to brush them with the melted butter and then shake in a plastic or paper bag of powdered icing sugar. Store them in a cookie tin, and they will stay moist for

The New Armory Opens

On Oct. 15, 1952, a large crowd of people came out in Vermilion to watch the opening of the new Armory Building, which would be the permanent home of the A Company of the Local Edmonton Regiment under the command of Captain B.C. Ackerman.

The armory was built by the Royal Canadian Engineers and it was expected, due to its excellent design, that it would become a prototype of other buildings that would be built throughout Canada as defense spending increased nationwide.

The armory contained a 25-yard rifle range, shower rooms, a canteen and a large main drill hall for the soldiers. Colonel J.S. Ross, the senior staff officer from Western Command headquarters, came out for the event and officially declared the armory officially open. He would also give a speech where he talked about the importance of the reserve force in the defence of Canada. He also commended the citizens of Vermilion for supporting A Company in their community.

Lt. Col. A. MacDonald, the commanding officer of the Edmonton regiment, gave high praise to Captain E.H. Buckingham and A.E. Kaiser, both of Vermilion, in their work in connection with getting the new armory built.

Beat together the butter, oil and sugars. Beat in the eggs, baking powder, baking soda, salt and spices. Beat in alternating the milk and the flour. Spoon into the donut pan, only fill 2/3 full. Bake for 10 minutes.

A key to success is having the oven really preheated and to use the convection feature if you have it.

Also on hand for the event was Lt. Col. W.G. Stillman, who commanded a regiment during the Second World War. Lt. Col. P.L. Debney, the engineer for the City of Edmonton, was also there for the opening.

After the armory was opened, residents were able to tour the building where they saw a display of war trophies collected by the regiment during the Second World War. The War On Nuclear Energy

Despite all this, today, nuclear energy is actually not very dangerous. In fact, according to statistics from the world nuclear association, nuclear energy is actually about as safe as solar. That statement might be difficult to understand, however even with the very small number of workplace injuries associated with solar panel setups nuclear power has about the same risk. This is because of the many years of improvements made to nuclear power production. These factories have been made both smaller and safer with an additional wall on the outside with the

Fear of Nuclear devices has been a cultural norm since the cold war when nuclear energy was first being developed. This was the time when both nuclear weapons and nuclear energy were being developed, and with the fear caused by the war and nukes naturally, some fear was placed onto nuclear energy as well.

I read one recently. It concerned a plate of flame-grilled mackerel. I mean, I understand the writers need to embellish its description a little, since how exciting can mackerel really be? Nevertheless, when he said the fish was “…suave, refreshing and nonchalantly sensual…” I had to shake my head and ponder what that actually meant.

How does a plate of fish manage to be suave? Have fish achieved some level of sophistication I’m unaware of? Refreshing is alright, but “nonchalantly sensual”?

Was he saying the scaly creature had somehow affected an air of indifference to his plight on the platter? Or was he merely indifferent to his obvious good looks and charm?

Quilting Artwork On Display At Library

Looking for a little colour to get you through the last long days of winter? Head down to the Vermilion Public Library and spend some time appreciating some quilt work that is on display for the month of February.

The Vermilion Quilters Guild has several items on display throughout the library for community members to admire. The guild, which is a nonprofit organization that has been around since 1997, meets twice a month at Red Feather Ridge for a day of camaraderie and sewing. In the past, the

guild has donated several items to charities in need, including the Cross Cancer Hospital, The Lloydminster Interval Home, the Stollery Children’s Hospital and Quilts of Valour.

This year, one of the featured items is a glued collage piece constructed by Sue Kylm, which was accepted into the Quilt Canada National Juried Quilt Show for 2021. Kylm took almost two years to create the artistic quilt, spending weekends, winters and holidays working on it.

Each goose is made from tiny bits of fabric, and then covered in matching tulle to add texture and make the sewing easier.

18th Annual Cutter Rally

The Lloydminster Exhibition Centre along with the Alberta Carriage Driving Association- East-West Chapter will host the 18th Annual Cutter Rally to raise funds for local cancer patients, on February 26.

There are four ways to participate in the event and Event Chairperson, Della Wist explained them in a recent interview.

“Anyone can participate as a teamster, which is driving your own team, bringing your sled and, having whoever you want to on it. The second way is to be a horseback rider and go along the trail as well. The third way to participate is as what we call ghost hands, which means you just purchase a hand, and we will roll your numbers for you or you can roll them in person; you don’t have to go out on the trail but it is still an enjoyable day. The fourth way is called the participant where you will be with a teamster on their rig and have your own ticket so that you are still eligible to win, but you have to know somebody that you can get onto

the wagon with, “ explained Wist.

According to Wist the event will go ahead snow or shine.

“Years before we have had different weather ranges, we’ve had it where its been mild and slushy, and ice-crusted trails and we’ve had it -20 and -25 and we still get people out which is amazing,” said Wist.

Participants in the event are eligible to win the grand prize which is a brand new two-seater sleigh, or if the winner decides to not take the sleigh he/she can choose to take the harness package valued at $2500 or take a cash prize of $2000. In addition to the grand prize the event will also have teamster, participant and horseback rider prizes.

“All four categories have a main prize associated with them, but not as big as the grand prize obviously, we will also have door prizes and we will have a roast beef dinner the night of the event at 5 p.m. where we will hand out all of the prizes and the best hand of the poker rally,” commented Wist.

big thank you to Mrs. Despins, for her role as the Faith Leader in our school, and for putting together such a valuable chance for us to explore our Catholic faith.

January Happigrams were handed out to joyous students in grades 1-5. Children love getting recognized for their individual accomplishments and it is always exciting news to share with proud parents. On February 2nd the littlest spartans waited in anticipation to hear the news about whether or not the groundhog would see his shadow. Many students were predicting that he would, meaning that there would be six more weeks of winter. Luckily for us, the groundhog did NOT see his shadow and we are looking forward to an early spring.

Grade 5’s in Miss. Frankiw’s class had a sweet time learning about states of matter in science! They “solidified” their learning through experimentation with ice cream floats! To wrap up their study of India in social studies, Grade 3 students had the opportunity to sample naan bread, butter chicken, rice, dal makhani, mango, and coconut water. Sounds like a delicious feast and opportunity to break bread and eat together.

I am not sure if this is true for everyone, but at St. Jerome’s Catholic School it feels like this year is flying by!

Wednesday marked the first day of semester 2! Older Spartans were heading to new classes, with new teachers… exciting changes for everyone. Even some brave High School Work Experience students have started learning about life on the other side of the desk (or school in this case).

The grade one classrooms are happy to welcome two lovely young ladies into our rooms to learn more about what it takes to teach and work with young learners. The littles are excited to see the big kids and show them what they can do!

We feel so blessed that students in grades 1 and 3 were able to participate in the “Dog Reading Program” this week. Well trained therapy dogs, who belong to staff and students at Lakeland College, come to our library to spend time listening to the students read. This is hands down a winwin program! Our students love reading to such great (and furry) listeners, the dogs love listening to the stories, and our love for literacy stays at the forefront of our educational values. We are very grateful to the staff and volunteers at Lakeland College for their willingness to share their time, animals, and expertise with our students.

On Monday last week, teachers across the East Central Catholic School Division spent the day learning more about our Catholic faith. After reading Judith Dunlap’s book “When You Teach in a Catholic School” educators gathered virtually within their school groups and discussed ways that we can lead by example in creating faith centered learning environments.

I was thinking as I started this article; what is your journey feeling and looking like as you have and are experiencing losses?

Fractured: Feeling broken by the loss you experienced whether a physical or life loss. A “broken heart.” The grief is deep and heavy. Experiencing this loss and realizing you are a “changed” person and you are on an uncharted journey. Fears, new emotions arise as to how will I navigate such a journey that is new, alone. You don’t have a road map to navigate and this is the worst journey you have ever been on. At Walking Through Grief we supply a booklet that I call our “Road Map” of support. We all need somewhere to start, to gain an understanding, to learn about

emotions, to find skills to help with our fears.

Anxiety : Having experienced such a great loss that has been life changing and left us feeling fractured and full of fears and questions. Anxiety enters in, a new journey, feeling overwhelmed and helpless looking at the ‘Big Picture.’ Our sense of worth and self esteem have been battered and we may feel isolated.

Isolation: I spoke of the overwhelming pain, emotions, fears and helplessness. Frozen, how do we move on in our grief journey?

When we look to the future with the questions of “How will I go on, am I strong enough for this journey, I am fractured. With not having the answer or skills and experiencing the loss of our ability to navigate this journey we may then start to isolate, withdraw, and find we are becoming more depressed. It takes courage, but reach out. I know it has been really difficult during the restrictions we have faced but try a to text, phone, face time with someone you

trust. You are not weak by calling out. You are allowing someone else a blessing by coming along side to support.

Time: Time seems to have stood still for you, you have forgotten times and activities and have robotted through days. Head and heart don’t seem connected. Take time and courage to embrace your pain and grief, accepting a little at a time. Don’t allow others to determine a time line of your grief. This is a huge challenge and one you need to invite a companion to join with you to listen to your story, your fears and your tears. This could be a family member, friend you trust, a support group, a church or a counsellor. You will have acquired skills to help navigate this grief journey and you will begin to see light again and the world around you.

Remember the sun is always shining it is just that the clouds we see are stopping our view.

Hope and faith that you will survive and even thrive again. That the skills you learn and the people you surround yourself with will help

RRSP & TFSA – What You Need To Know

Have you ever thought about getting an Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) or Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA), but you’re not sure if you are old enough or how to go about it?

During tax season banks encourage you to set up a RRSP or a TFSA for tax purposes. The only age restriction to getting an RRSP is if you are over 71 years old. Here is some information to help you understand what these are and why you should get them.

An RRSP is a registered retirement savings plan that you establish through a financial institution such as a bank, credit union, trust, or insurance company to which you, your spouse, or commonlaw partner contribute into. Deductible RRSP contributions can be used to reduce your tax. Income you earn in the RRSP is usually exempt from tax as long as the funds remain in the plan. You have to pay tax when you receive payments from the plan. The benefit of an RRSP is best if the higher-income spouse or partner contributes to an RRSP for a lower-income spouse or partner, because the contributor will receive the benefit of a tax deduction. Setting up a self-directed RRSP is an option as well if you prefer to build and manage your own portfolio by buying and selling different types of investments. Your RRSP has a deduction limit that is often referred to as “contribution room”, and you can find your deduction limit from your previous years notice of assessment, My Account, or MyCRA mobile app. www. canada.ca provides more information on

how to set up your own RRSP. When deciding on participating in RRSP you will have to decide which way you will invest in an RRSP, here are a list of ways you can contribute.

An Individual RRSP- this account is registered in your name and the investments held in the RRSP and the tax advantages associated with them belong to you.

Another way to contribute is through a group RRSP through your employer and do carry benefits, which are: your employer provides matching contributions (that’s free money for you). You may also have lower management fees on the investments you hold in your RRSP and you will have the ability to make automatic contributions straight from your paycheque. A third way is a self-directed RRSP in which you make buy-and-sell decisions yourself.

You can invest in common types of qualified investments including GIC’s, bonds, mutual funds and more, however you will pay commissions on transactions you make-depending on the investments you hold. This is the same as you would in a non-registered brokerage account and there is usually and annual administration fee of about $125 annually, and lastly there are spousal RRSP’s – if you have a spouse and one of you earns significantly more than the other the higher earner can make their RRSP contribution to a spousal RRSP. Then, you can claim the deduction to recover tax paid at a higher rate.

In retirement, the spouse who earned the lower income can withdraw from the spousal RRSP, pay tax at lower rates, and have overal tax savings. There are various rules and exceptions though around withdraw-

ing from spousal RRSP’s and calculating the taxable income you and your spouse or common-law partner must report.

The Tax-Free Savings Account was started in 2009 for individuals +18 years old who have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) to set money aside tax free. There are multiple types of TFSAs; a deposit, an annuity contract, and an arrangement in trust. You can open a TFSA with banks, insurance companies, credit unions, and trust companies. Contributions to a TFSA are not deductible for income tax purposes.

Any amount that is contributed is generally tax-free, including when it is withdrawn. An

individual can have more than one TFSA, however the total amount you contribute to all TFSAs cannot be more than your available TFSA contribution for that year.

Just like the RRSP, you can open a selfdirected TFSA. To open a TFSA contact your financial institution, credit union, or insurance company and provide them with your SIN and date of birth to register your qualifying arrangement as a TFSA. You can also find your contribution room information through the same sources of the My Account or MyCRA mobile app.

Rebuild & Recover – Two Producers Share Their Experiences With Fire And Drought

For many beef producers across Canada, the past year was challenging because of environmental conditions. Many producers experienced and continue to withstand extreme weather, which is testing their production and profit potentials, but also their mental resolve and financial resilience.

When things aren’t going well, farmers may feel like everything is out of their control.

However, thinking strategically, reaching out and building a community of peers and professionals can help producers navigate through tough times and come out stronger in the end.

Finding silver linings in the ashes For Andrea Haywood-Farmer and her husband Ted, last summer they were running from one fire to another — literally.

“Our whole ranch burnt except our homeplace,” Andrea says, yet she remains optimistic. “It was really scary. But we’re going to be okay.”

Wildfire is a primary risk for their multigenerational ranch, located near Savona, BC. The Haywood-Farmers run about 1,200 cow-calf pairs (collectively with a cousin) on fire-prone timber mountain range. “Fire can start anywhere and it can go anywhere, depending on the wind and conditions,” explains Andrea. “Not knowing where it might start or where it’s going is a significant vulnerability for us.”

Where practical, they implement prevention practices. “There are things like your homeplace – you think about fire exposure

and mitigating fire risk,” she says, and adds that they have hay fields strategically located around their yard for protection. When it comes to their range however, the uncertain nature of fire limits pre-planning. “You go and start opening gates and, to the best of your ability, if there are cattle in the pasture, you move them out of harm’s way,” explains Andrea. “And you keep doing it until you don’t have to do it anymore.”

Andrea says the area had experienced 100 years of fire suppression. “A lot of forage had been choked out by forest grasses or trees growing into grasslands because we’ve lost our fire cycles,” she explains. “Ted and I have been saying for a long time that what we need is a low-intensity fire in April or October that could be managed,” she says. Prior to the wildfire, they had discussions with provincial range staff to arrange some prescribed burns. “We had candidate sites selected but the fire beat us to it,” she explains.

“Next year is tricky, there is some sensitive land we don’t want to graze,” she says, and adds they plan to move a portion of the herd to northern BC for the next year. “In the short term, you don’t have any forage. In the long term, it’s going to open up a lot of country for forage,” she says. “That’s an anticipated silver lining.”

Resilience of community Haywood-Farmer said that a bright spot of the crisis was the overwhelming goodwill.

“People are so awesome. We had ranchers, Indigenous communities, neighbours working together, 24 hours a day,” she recalls.

If someone needed a hand, everybody showed up. “I felt like it was one of the most heartwarming things from a human perspective.”

She also said they had a good working relationship in place with public lands staff before the fire. “From Day 1, we were on the phone with range people who were checking in daily,” she adds. Communication remains essential as they work to determine a plan to go forward. “Operations stuff is already a full-time job, and on top of it we have to troubleshoot and figure out how to make the best business decisions,” Andrea explains. “The whole main part and infrastructure, corrals, water systems, those have all burnt,” she describes. Logistics like corral and fence replacement can occur over time but it’s a big effort. “We are grateful there is a path through, but it’s a heck of a lot of work to right the ship.”

To help manage animal health and welfare during the emergency, they leaned on their veterinarian to talk them through scenarios and help them make difficult decisions. “We have an amazing vet that Ted called up at 10:30 at night after a fire had just raked through and said, ‘I need some decision criteria, what is the decision tree on whether I give them a chance or put them down?’” Andrea explains. “It made Ted feel like he had a basis for his decisions,” she adds.

Rebuilding the land and its people is a marathon, not a sprint. Andrea says that support at the height of the crisis was valued and much needed, however the recovery

phase is one of the most challenging times.

“In the acute phase, the emergency phase, people are usually well supported, but during the rebuilding phase, it’s important to support people emotionally and mentally through that too,” Haywood-Farmer explains.

“You don’t have that adrenaline; you don’t have all the people when you’re sitting at the computer and figuring out what the plan is for next year,” she says. “There’s an acute impact but also a lasting impact, and how do you buoy the ag community through that?”

Realizing the resilience of their community was a positive outcome for HaywoodFarmer, however she says looking ahead, beef producers are going to continue to face extreme environmental challenges. “It’s a new reality, it’s going to hit us all one way or another,” she says. “No one is immune to it.”

Planning for drought is planning for recovery Larry Wegner is a beef and forage producer who farms near Virden, Manitoba, in an area he describes as a transitional soil type between parkland, mixed grasslands and tall grass prairie. “It’s basically been a four-year drought,” Wegner says of the past few years. Any moisture the area has received in the past growing seasons has been abnormal, either arriving off-season, or coming all at once and then not again for the rest of the year. “We definitely saw things happen that we hadn’t seen before,” Larry says, pointing out that there haven’t been any indicators that this current drought is done.

BULL BREEDERS Continued from page 12 Wegner has been navigating the challenge by relying on his long-time planned grazing system where his herd grazes a series of smaller paddocks intensively, which are then rested for recovery. He estimates it takes 90 days for some of his tame species to recover, but on native pastures, the recovery period takes a full year or longer.

Wegner started planned grazing fifteen years ago after being prompted by another rough patch his farm sustained. “Back in BSE, we hit a dry year and the grass stopped growing after 45 days. I had a whole season ahead and ran out of moisture,” Larry says.

“Every year we’re learning at it, no two years have been the same,” he says.

With their grazing management system, Wegner was able to increase carrying capacity of their land base prior to the dry years. “It’s about being adaptive and being able to change your herd numbers,” he says, and adds that custom grazing was a flexible way for their farm to increase stock densities and add an additional revenue stream. Part of their action plan to deal with the drought was being prepared to destock if necessary.

“We knew if we didn’t get rain by a certain day, we were liquidating, which in our case was custom cattle,” Wegner says.

Maintaining pasture health is a priority for Larry. “We don’t want to abuse our land so it’s viable for next year. The worse the land suffers from a drought, the longer it takes to recover,” he explains. He adds that heavy grazing reduces residue and decreases the lands’ ability to capture and retain precipitation when it does rain. “Drought is like a bank account gone negative,” he says and, if you’re too far in debt, you’ll find it challenging to bank rainfall. “If you plan to go into a drought, your recovery will be quicker and easier.”

Taking stock of water, feed and genetic resources “Water quality was a big issue in late summer,” Wegner says, and adds that water supply remains a stumbling block for many this winter because the water table has dropped. “We had four dugouts go dry and dams go dry this summer,” he describes. In order to keep his cattle out of poor-quality water, they set up trails and pathways to allow their cows to walk farther home for fresh water. Looking ahead, Larry is considering adding a well system that would increase Larry will supplement his herd in colder winter months with straw and pellets until his herd can head to stockpiled spring grazing in April. Sourcing supplemental feed comes with risk, however. “Every time you move feed you have to worry about what weeds are there to affect you,” Wegner says, and adds transport costs are also critical factors in dry years. “As much as you pay for feed for down the road you have to consider freight.”

Next year, Wegner is planning to convert some low-production pastures to annuals for added flexibility. “We will take two of our paddocks out that are just Kentucky bluegrass and smooth brome and stagnant and put annuals in there for feed or a polycrop that we can graze or supplement with,” Larry says.

Wegner explains that a key part of maintaining a cow herd through the drought is having the right kind of cattle. “Cattle are just a tool to harvest your forage,” he says, adding they carefully select replacement animals that will survive their management.

During challenging years, that long-term focus has paid off. “The animals will tell you which ones adapt and which ones don’t.”

The 2022 Balancing Act: Growth, Innovation And Risk Management

Canadian producers are encouraged to lean into their strategic planning skills this year to meet what’s ahead. According to the FCC economic outlooks, challenges impacting the food supply chain will continue but the demand for commodities and food means there is opportunity for growth, indicating a need for farms, agribusinesses and food processors to innovate and manage risk.

The latest FCC outlook for the grains, oilseeds and pulses sector suggests prices will remain strong into 2022, due in part to the low national and global supply of these commodities amplified last year by the drought in western Canada. “ There is plent y of optimism for this sector looking at the year ahead; however, two of the biggest economic trends that could impact profitability are rising crop input costs and the impact of global political tensions on trade,” said J.P. Gervais, FCC’s chief economist. “I can’t emphasize enough the value of farm management and strategic thinking. Producers need to continue to plan for disruptions like we’ve seen in the past year.”

of fertilizer skyrocketed last year and is anticipated to stop increasing at a fast pace, but nonetheless remain elevated.

The cattle market is also signaling strong prices for 2022. The number of fed cattle in 2022 is forecast to decline and because of high feed costs, fed cattle will likely be marketed at lower weights, causing volume by weight to decline. However, given higher prices, cattle receipts should grow. The drought seriously impacted access to feed, resulting in some cattle producers downsizing their operations.

“The pandemic has impacted buying decisions in the grocery aisles. Canad i a n b e ef c o n s u m pt i o n s l owe d i n 2021, but the positive five-year trend in consumption pre-pandemic is expected to resume while export demand remains robust,” Gervais explained.

Consumer appetite for dairy products grew in 2021 but not to the expected level.

With the increasing costs for feed and energy, the Canadian Dairy Commission is increasing the support price for butter.

While the dairy farm price is expected to experience an increase, milk output at the farm level could see only limited growth.

After strong growth in hog receipts in 2021, there is limited growth potential for 2022. Hog prices are projected to 23 decline slightly and with marginal growth in production. High feed prices 23 will challenge profitability and may hinder

production growth.

Gervais offers the following tips for producers to build resilience and capitalize on opportunities to advance their operations: Strategy – keep an eye on longterm objectives, including growth. Think about the integration of operational, marketing and financial plans.

Innovation – consider the technological changes, efficiencies and sustainable practices that would provide an edge to your operation.

Risk Management – develop scenarios to determine exposure to unfavourable market trends, interest rate increases, higher input prices, trade impacts or weather events.

Execution – Surround yourself with skilled resources to help you assess and adjust your financial and marketing plans as the economy and markets evolve.

While the long-term outlook for Canada’s ag and food industry is positive, there are many factors to keep in mind as operations make their plans, including input costs, trade tensions, variable weather and changing consumer behaviour,” Gervais said. “We encourage producers to stay up-to-date on the important topics and trends that will impact them and take action accordingly.”

Producer surveys suggest that 5 to 8% of calves typically die before weaning. High winter feed costs mean you’ve already invested a lot in the 2022 calf crop. That investment is lost when calves die before weaning. Scours and respiratory disease are two leading causes of preventable disease and death in young calves.

Calves rely on antibodies from the cow’s colostrum to fight off common pathogens. If the cow herd is wellvaccinated and well-fed, and if calves consume adequate amounts of highquality colostrum within the first few hours of life, maternal antibody levels can remain high for several months.

The downside is that maternal antibodies can interfere with injectable vaccines.

Vaccines help the immune system practice, like a fire drill. The first attempt may be awkward, slow and uncoordinated, but repeated practice improves performance next time. Similarly, the immune system responds better each time it’s exposed to a pathogen. The second (booster) vaccination produces a stronger and longer-lasting response than the initial (priming) vaccination. If the calf is given a vaccine injection while high levels of maternal antibody are circulating in the calf’s blood, those antibodies will block the vaccine before the calf’s own immune system gets a chance to practice. That defeats the purpose.

“Mucosal” vaccines given in the nose (intranasal) or mouth (oral) avoid this problem. These vaccines work differ-

ently than injectable vaccines so maternal antibodies do not interfere with them. Nathan Erickson and colleagues at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine demonstrated this in a recent study funded by your Canadian Beef Cattle Check-off (Evaluation of bovine respiratory syncital virus (BRSV) and bovine herpesvirus (BHV) specific antibody responses between heterologous and homologous prime-boost vaccinated western Canadian beef calves; PMID: 33390597).

What They Did: A group of 75 calves from the University of Saskatchewan’s beef herd were either given an intranasal vaccine against respirator y viruses (BRSV, BHV-1 and PI3) or sterile water (control) within 24 hours of birth. At pasture turnout (48 days of age) and weaning (6 months) all calves were injected with a 5-way vaccine against BRSV, BHV-1, PI3 and BVD Types 1 and 2. Blood samples were collected each time calves were vaccinated, as well as two weeks after pasture turnout and weaning to evaluate antibody levels.

What They Learned: Although half the calves had received an intranasal vaccine at bir th, both groups had similar antibody levels at pasture turnout. There are two reasons for that. One is that all the calves still had a lot of maternal antibodies circulating in the blood. Another is that the intranasal vaccine simply primed the calf’s immune system; this was the first practice fire drill, so the immune system didn’t respond by producing high antibody levels.

But two weeks after the calves were given the injectable vaccine at pasture turnout, the calves that had been intranasally vaccinated at birth had higher antibody levels than calves that were not intranasally vaccinated at birth.

The intranasal vaccine given at birth bypassed the maternal antibodies and primed their immune systems, so their immune systems responded strongly to the injected booster vaccine given at pasture turnout. The intranasally vaccinated calves also had higher antibody levels at weaning (when all calves were given the second vaccine injection), and two weeks after weaning.

Calf numbers were too small to detect differences in illness or weaning weight.

Differences in antibody response don’t always equate to better performance or health, but they are a good sign that the vaccines were working.

So What Does This Mean… to Me? Talk to your veterinarian about your calving health plan. Mucosal vaccines are an effective way to strengthen the immune system in newborn calves. The vaccine used here was designed for respiratory viruses, which cause illness in all age classes of cattle. An oral vaccine is also available to protect calves from viral scours which typically occur in the first two to three weeks of life.

Vaccines are an important part of a disease prevention program, but they aren’t a miracle fix. Vaccines can be overwhelmed by disease pressure. Providing adequate bedding and shelter, regularly separating cows into groups of pregnant, newly calved and cows with older

calves, and ensuring calving and nursery pens and pastures are large enough to avoid crowding will help reduce pathogen exposure and spread. The Sandhills and Foothills pasture calving systems are based on this principle. Your veterinarian should be able to help you assess your calving facility and pasture options to help identify animal management and movement options to reduce disease transmission.

No vaccine replaces good mothering, good colostrum and good nutrition.

Good quality colostrum is still essential to protect the calf until its own immune system is up and running. Colostrum quantity and/or quality might be down this year, particularly if cows are thin or calves are weak and slow to nurse.

Energy, vitamins and minerals are essential to support the immune system in both the cow and calf. Drought can affect the levels of these nutrients in the feed. Discuss your feeding program with your vet and nutritionist to identify the most cost-effective ways to supplement what may be lacking.

Vaccinating calves at birth – on top of tagging and banding and pasting – may sound like one more job you don’t have time for. But the time you invest now can certainly pay off at weaning time.

Lakeland Rowing Club Getting Ready For Indoor Competitions

The Lakeland Rowing Club has not been idle throughout the winter m o nt h s. Every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 6 am, you will find a handful of energetic rowers practising for two upcoming indoor rowing events.

At our November meeting, our 4H sheep members were led through an ultrasound pregnancy workshop. Veterinarian Dr. Becky Newman taught us how to identify a pregnancy and how far along it is! This is excellent knowledge for our members to have, as breeding season had just wrapped up for most farms.

For our December meeting, our club

got into the festive spirit by making decorations and carolling. We spent the morning going through donated supplies to create new arrangements for the seniors of Vermillion and Manville. Our parents loaded us up and we delivered these arrangements and sing some carols!

I know that for this member, it definitely filled my Christmas cup to see the smiles and joy that we brought to the seniors that day.

2022 COUNTY OF VERMILION RIVER REQUEST FOR ROADSIDE MOWING PROPOSALS The County of Vermilion River is now accepting price proposals for roadside mowing operations for the 2022 season. The requested price proposal is for a one (1) year contract with a county option to extend for 2023 and 2024.

Mowing operations will include: 1. One pass shoulder cut on a minimum of 1400 miles of municipal roadside.

Additional miles may be added at the County’s discretion. Price proposals for the roadside mowing will be submitted as cost/mile mowed (both sides of road).

Shoulder cuts must be completed between July 15, 2022 and August 31, 2022.

2. Shoulder mowing cuts will include a minimum of 10ft on all identified gravelled roads immediately adjacent to the driving surface on both sides of the roadway and a minimum of 15ft on all identified paved roads immediately adjacent to the driving surface on both sides of the roadway.

3. Mowing shall be done so no debris is deposited on the road surface. Side mount or offset hitch equipment must be used so the tractor remains on the road surface. A minimum of 6 mowers is recommended.

Quality Control Targets: All vegetation including trees up to 1” in diameter must be mowed to a minimum of 6” in height.

A price proposal package including a Request for Proposal (RFP) and Contact specifications may be obtained by contacting the County of Vermilion River Office at (780) 846-2244 or downloading it from www.purchasingconnection.ca. Please ensure that all information required in the RFP is included with the bid summary sheet as the Contact will be awarded based on the evaluation criteria.

Price proposals must be received at the County Administration Office by 12:00 Noon (MST) on Tuesday, February 22, 2022. Please send proposals marked “RFP for Roadside Mowing”.
