January 27 the Lloydminster Public Library hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the grand opening of its new location at the LloydMall.

The Lloydminster Public Library has been serving the community since 1929 and services over 14,000 patrons each year with 14 dedicated staff. The library has 60,000 titles in its physical collection and patrons also have free access to over 500,000 digital items through Hoopla and Overdrive apps. In addition to traditional offerings, the library now has a new space that features a makerspace, meeting rooms and, an area dedicated to teenagers and children.

“The dedication and determination exhibited by the Lloydminster Public

Library’s board and staff to bring the move to fruition and its support in building a stronger community are paramount.

Everyone involved in this project, including the community, has many reasons to celebrate. On behalf of the City of Lloydminster, we’re excited to watch the new Lloydminster Public Library inspire the next generation by providing safe spaces that foster youth appreciation for literacy and creative growth through the various programming, workshops and events,” commented Mayor Gerald Aalbers.

Kristine Knourek, Chair of the Lloydminster Public Library Board also noted that public libraries are community gathering spaces where people come together on equal ground, and that the volunteer Board of Directors, alongside their dedicated library staff was honoured to unveil

“Our vision is to work together to create unlimited frontiers for our community, and the new Lloydminster Public Library is the place this will occur. We invite residents and their families to create, be inspired and connect in this space,” said Knourek.

Construction of the free-to-access amenity began in January 2021 after Library staff revealed the new visual identity and concepts of how Lloydminster’s new public library would look. The facility soft-opened to the public earlier in January 2022 after months of delay caused by a water main break in August 2021 and other circumstances caused by the pandemic.

“Our new Lloydminster Public Library brings together all members of our community and provides a modern

and accessible space to connect with friends, family and community groups.

We look forward to providing exciting new programming and bookable spaces that will facilitate learning and connection,” commented Michele Duczek and Sarah Snihurowych, Interim Co-Directors, Lloydminster Public Library.

Patrons and newcomers wanting to attend the new 12,000 sq. ft. facility can experience all the Library’s offerings during its weeklong virtual grand opening celebrations with events such as a storybook walk, virtual book readings and an anime club kickoff.

Town Of Vermilion Welcomes New Fire Chief

With over 200 calls last year, and the retirement of Fire Chief Bill Roth, Vermilion needed a Chief who was capable of handling a very busy Fire Department.

Fortunately, 24 year veteran and Deputy Chief Anton Krys agreed to step into the role of Chief.

Curiosity began Krys’ volunteer firefighting career. One night three houses under construction near his home were on fire and while watching the fire depart-

ment work, he was grabbed by a firefighter and asked if he could help fill the self contained breathing apparatus bottles (SCBA). A spark in Krys was ignited that night, he recognized the need to help in himself and the need for members on the department, and volunteered the next day.

He has been an integral part of the Vermilion Fire Crew ever since.

Firefighting and emergency calls have seen some changes over the last two decades, and Krys believes that the department needs to continue to adjust to how emergency services respond in the future.

“My goal is to keep the department m ov i n g for war d,” says Krys, “we need to keep up with training, and equipment

advances. The town is changing and we can’t stand still, we need to change with it.”

One of the ways the department has adapted is using some extra technology to respond to calls. Everyone in the department now uses an phone app called “I Am Responding”, this app allows Krys to see where his members are in relation to a call out, where hydrants are, and keeps a history of calls and fire permits in the area.

Like his predecessor, Krys knows it isn’t him that makes the department strong, it’s the people who work tirelessly as firefighters and those that support it.

“I am very fortunate that everyone of my fighters stayed on, they are the reason I look good,” stated Krys.

This doesn’t just mean the firefighters, this includes the Town of Vermilion council and administrators, as well as the people of Vermilion. Krys is thankful for all the businesses in town who let their staff be volunteer firefighters at a moment’s notice.

department.” states Krys.

Looking at the future of the department, Krys is hoping to also focus on some maintenance and upgrades that the fire hall will need in the near future, as well as planning for a new rescue unit that will need to be purchased in 2026.

The planning for that needs to start now, as the unit has to suit and be equipped for the types of emergencies and situations seen in the County. He is also keen to have the insight of the younger generation of firefighters. Krys believes that the younger perspectives are needed to keep up with changes in emergency response techniques. With the continued growth of the community the department will need to grow, and Krys believes that at some point in the next few years, the role of Fire Chief will need to become a full time position. Meanwhile, Krys is going to support his firefighters, the community and the county in his new role as Chief, to the best of his ability. The Vermilion Fire department would like to thank Bill Roth for all his years of service and dedication to the department.

Alberta Health Services Rolling Out Ten Point Plan For Emergency Services

H e a l t h M i n i s ter J a s o n C o p p i n g announced January 24 that the Alberta government is launching a provincial emergency medical services advisory committee. The committee’s purpose is to provide immediate and long-term recommendations that will highlight an updated provincial EMS service plan. The advisory committee will be co-chaired by United Conservative Party (UCP) Highwood MLA, R.J. Sigurdson, and Tracy Allard, MLA for Grande Prairie, by the end of May the committee will provide recommendations to the Health Minister.

The committee will include contracted ambulance operators, unions representing paramedics, municipal representatives and Indigenous community representatives. According to Minister Copping, members will collaborate, identify concerns, provide advice and inform a new provincial EMS service plan.

In a press release on January 24, Copping stated, “Alberta’s government has been supportive of EMS throughout the pandemic. As we approach the peak of Omicron cases, we know the EMS system is seeing significant strain, which impacts service. We recognize this is a challenge and are taking immediate steps to improve emergency care access while we explore longer-term solutions.”

“Responding to medical emergencies is a critical need for all Albertans.

I am honoured to have this opportunity to make a difference and improve the system for the long term. I look forward to working as co-chair on this committee and taking swift action on this matter,” stated Tracy Allard, co-chair, Provincial EMS Advisory Committee, and MLA for

Grande Prairie.

“Thank you to the remarkable group of leaders who have agreed to serve on the advisory committee. They genuinely care about EMS staff and every Albertan and the communities they serve.

Albertans expect that when they call 911 in their time of greatest need, EMS will always answer. The committee’s goal will be focused around ensuring and improving service to Albertans while supporting the most critical piece of that equation: our EMS staff across all of Alberta.

I look forward to rolling up my sleeves and getting to work,” said R.J. Sigurdson, co-chair, Provincial EMS Advisory Committee, and MLA for Highwood.

In a follow up statement to Monday’s announcement, Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA) President, Mike Parker commented, “It is long past time an Alberta government got to work on solving the EMS crisis in Alberta. Our advocacy to expose the state of EMS by reporting red alerts has made the need for action clear. HSAA has been asked to come to the table to come up with solutions. As the experts in the delivery of emergency medical services we are more than willing to get to work. However, to be clear, HSAA will not be recommending or supportive of any privatization efforts.

My focus throughout this process will be the health of Albertans and ensuring care is there when they need it. Every dollar needs to be spent on patient care – not profits for private contractors.”

While the fo cus of the advisor y committee is to create a sustainable long term EMS service plan, Alberta Health Services (AHS) will be rolling out a 10-point plan that will be implemented throughout the province in the short term.

Of the ten points, five have already

been implemented or star ted, they are; hiring more paramedics, launching pilot projects to manage non-emergency inter-facility transfers, initiating an ‘hours of work’ project to help ease staff fatigue, transferring low priority calls to other agencies in consultation with EMS physicians, and stopping the automatic dispatch of ambulances to motor vehicle collisions that don’t have injuries.

Five additional actions are coming in the future; creating a new integrated operations centre in Calgary, bringing paramedic leads and hospital staff together to improve integration, movement of resources and flow of patients, evaluation by an emergency communications officer to determine if an ambulance from out of area, though it may be closest to a 911 call, is most appropriate to respond, implementing a pilot project in Red Deer that will manage most patient transfers between facilities with dedicated transfer units, freeing up ambulances to handle emergency calls, allowing ambulances to be preempted from assignments, instead of being automatically dispatched when a 911 call is received, to ensure more ambulances are available for critical patients, and developing a strategic provincial service plan for EMS delivery in the province.

The province will be putting out a request for proposals to conduct a third party review of Alberta’s provincewide EMS dispatch system in February. The purpose of an objective review by external health system experts will be to give insights on how to address ongoing pressures, and improve effectiveness and efficiency through best practises. How to provide the best outcomes for Albertans who call 911 during a medical event is the final goal.

Dwaine Marvin Parr passed away at home, Lloydminster, Alberta at the age of 79 years.

Dwaine is survived by: his partner of 40 years, May Rahn; children, Murray (Candace), Wanda (Tracy) and Geraldine; stepchildren, Darlene (Bob), Larry, Val (Clinton) and Dale (Gloria); numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; brothers, Lynn (Eleanor) and Grant (Deb); sister, Sandra (Roger); and many nieces, nephews and extended family.

Dwaine was predeceased by: his parents, Francis and Laura Parr; sister-in-law, Ann; nephew, Grant; and stepdaughter, Shirley.

The Celebration of Life in memory of Dwaine will be held at a later date.

Donations in memory of Dwaine may be made to donor's charity of choice.

Freedom Convoy 2022

It has been such a n exc i t i n g we e k , watching the Freedom Convey 2022, as it left BC and traveled across the country to Ottawa. While there has been very little coverage of it on the main stream media, there are thousands of first-hand accounts to be found on the internet by independent media. When the main stream media does cover it, but, they seem to be looking for the negative, to minimize it and miss the opportunity to tell the thousand stories of this moment in history.

It is a story of unity right across the country, with no regard to race, province, language

or religion. There is only one goal, to set Canada free of all the COVID 19 mandates.

I have heard of heart-warming stories of a Hutterite group in Manitoba, that cooked a feast for the truckers, but were not able to deliver it because of police barricades, so they followed the truckers for three hours to be able to serve them. I have witnessed massive groups of people on the sides of the road and gathered on overpass after overpass with Canadian flags and signs cheering the truckers on. I have seen tough grown men truckers moved to tears, because of all the support and positive energy they are receiving on route. One trucker, who traveled with his three children, was wondering how he would feed his family, but as they slow rolled into a town, people ran up to them with large bagged

lunches for the whole family. Even farmers came out with their tractors and parked on the side of the road as a show of support for the truckers. Several Ottawa churches have opened their doors to feed and house the protesters. Everyone traveling to be part of this historical time in Canadas’s history, will have more amazing stories.

The Freedom Convey 2022 has not been without problems to overcome. Their Go Fund Me page was frozen twice, linked to a tweet of Gerald Butts, claiming that the truckers were terrorists. The fund is now at over nine million dollars. Their Facebook page, Freedom Convey 2022 with 600,000 followers was taken down, and a new one was started, but then they experienced it taken down again, and are finding that many of their posts go missing. There

The Hard Days Of Travel

It was back in 19 0 2 t h a t Ve r m i l ion was founded as a small community in the middle of nowhere. From that small community, a vibrant town would grow that now has over 4,000 people within it.

Those early years were dif ficult for many, considering the distances between the communities. In 1901, Hugh Evans and Lance Playne began to freight goods down the North Saskatchewan River from Edmonton, which was

the most efficient way to bring supplies to the Vermilion area. P.G. Pilkie would bring a large load of lumber by raft along the river. The trip by water took four days from Edmonton. If you wanted to do the trip by cart, then you needed to give yourself 10 to 12 days to get to Vermilion from Edmonton.

If you wanted to receive mail in Vermilion, then you needed to travel about seven kilometres to the east to Breade, which is where the post office was. Traveling by cart or on the river, just to get the mail, wasn’t easy and accidents could leave you stranded with a long way to walk. Often, cargo was left

where it was until another cart could be found to load up the items and continue on the journey.

A stopping house nearby was a good place to stop if you wanted a meal, or a place to stay overnight as you journeyed to your homestead. Often, these homesteads were the start of early communities.

In 1905, things got much better when the Canadian Northern Railway arrived in Vermilion, giving a quick and easy way to get from Edmonton to the community.

This would fundamentally change the history of Vermilion and it would result in rapid growth. Within two years, Vermil-

are reports that only a fraction of the trucks are in Ottawa, as many are blocked from getting close by barricades, so there are a lot of truckers all around the peripheral of Ottawa. As I write this on Sunday, the Western Convey is trapped by a blockade of a police car, a grater and snow plow 2.5 kilometers away from Parliament Hill. Many protesters have walked the distance to go out and greet them. It is unknown how long they will be trapped there. Organizers are reassuring everyone that this is a peaceful protest, filled with an amazing energy and unity from all across Canada. A recent poll by 800 AM CKLW Radio showed that 90 per cent of the people support the truckers protest against the vaccine mandates and COVID 19 restrictions, and 10 per cent are against the truckers’ protest.

It was a cute poem, all about a cat and his well-dressed friend. For the final line the kids were expected to fill in the missing word. It went something like this: Little Fluffy is a cat.

With her friend, a great big rat, Who wears a floppy, purple…

“Coat!” she screamed with delight. “Can we read it again?”

Did it matter that the picture clearly depicted a portly rat, squatting with a cat on a mat while wearing a hat? Nope. Ah children, they bring smiles to each and every day.

The Evolution Of Video Games

Today video games are large productions made by hundreds of people and funded by corporations.

These games range widely in their content from immersive storytelling adventures to combat-oriented fastpaced online shooters. Though games didn’t begin this way, in fact, the first video game was nothing more than a table tennis simulator.

You may know this game as “Pong”, it featured a flatscreen with just a black background, a white pixel for the ball and two long rectangles on the sides to act as paddles.

This game was incredibly rudimentary in its design however it was the inspiration that would fuel many future innovations.

This first early era of games ran on computers that were not capable of displaying anything more than a small grid of pixels, so consequently the complex highly rendered graphics we come to expect today were not yet feasible. In fact, game makers were even limited in how many colours they could display at one time, some could only display shades of black or green.

The first game consoles suffered from this issue, as they had very limited memory and could not store much information for textures. This required developers to be creative when designing their games. The Atari was one of the first gaming consoles; its games were very simple in their form. Games such as Pacman, Adventure, and Asteroids are all classic examples of these early pixelbased games.

For years the gaming market was largely made up of these 2-dimensional pixel-based games. However, silently while these games were being produced a Computer Software Engineer by the name of Edwin Catmull was developing a way to display 3D graphics. His method would become the standard practice for displaying any 3D image on a computer. By using a series of polygons in a virtually coded 3D environment he was able to build any shape imaginable. These triangles could then be coloured and even display images.

This enabled a new generation of games with environments and characters made out of these polygonal shapes.

The first successful 3D game was called Battlezone, a 3D first person game where you played as a tank in ‘tank on tank combat’. Though the graphics were not realistic, in fact this game featured a wireframe aesthetic meaning its polygonal shapes were hollow and looked as though they were made out of glowing wire.

Since then video games have undergone decades of gradual iteration. Through this the amount of triangles used in these polygonal games have increased from less than 100 used in an entire game, to more than 40 thousand used in just one character. This major increase in polygon count allowed for the resolution of in game graphics to reach a level required to achieve near true to life fidelity. Though the increased polygons alone were not enough, as a new technology called “ray tracing” allowed materials of these polygons to be lit in a way that is true to how real light works.

National Police Federation Launches Campaign To Keep RCMP In Alberta

As stated on their website, the National Police Federation (NPF) represents 20,000 RCMP Members serving across Canada and internationally. It is the largest police labour relations organization in Canada; the second largest in North America and is the first independent national association to represent RCMP Members.

The Focus of the NPF is on improving public safety in Canada by focusing on increasing resources, equipment, training, and other supports for Members who have been under-funded for far too long. Better resourcing and supports for the RCMP will enhance community safety and livability in the communities we serve, large and small, across Canada.

County Holds Virtual Town Hall Meeting About Clandonald School

In December of 2021, Buffalo Trail Public Schools (BTPS) contacted the County of Vermilion River regarding the future of the Clandonald School Building. Since the closure of the school in June of 2021, the building has been empty and needing to find a new purpose. BTPS has no need to keep the property or structure, and has offered the County and the community of Clandonald the opportunity to acquire the ownership of it.

In a virtual Town Hall meeting on January 24, Reeve Stacey Hryciuk, County Chief Administrative (CAO) Officer Harold Northcott, Councilor Jason Stelmaschuk

and Executive Assistant Susan Hodges Marlowe were joined by BTPS Director of Facilities Services Randy Huxley and approximately twenty Clandonald community members, some representing local community groups and organizations who may be interested in acquiring the structure.

Reeve Hryciuk started the meeting off with a brief timeline for those in attendance, BTPS would like an answer from the County

by February 28 of this year, and are hoping to be done with any transactions regarding the building by the end of June 2022.

Participants were then given a breakdown by Huxley of the building’s maintenance and renovation history since the fire

of 2001. People were also given the opportunity to ask Huxley questions regarding things like utilities, possible problems or upgrades needed in the future, and the condition of things like the floors, furnaces, water heaters, and roofs.

Potential uses of the building were brainstormed by participants, as well as a good discussion with the County officials regarding the support the County can provide if a local community group were to purchase it.

Alison talked about perseverance and grit. We loved the stories of her riding in close and bumping into other riders, falling in the mud and getting up, and stopping to get the bee out of her helmet. Alison shared that to be chosen to be on the Olympic Team, you have to be one of the top athletes, and you also have to have specific skills the team needs. But even more than those skills,

you need to be a team player, kind, fun, and have a positive attitude. Without a doubt, this is exactly why Alison was chosen to be on the Olympic Team for the Tokyo Summer Olympics that took place in 2021. Alison’s favourite part of the Olympics was seeing all the other athletes who worked so hard to get there, and getting to meet new people and hear their stories. Very year, she races in 50-60 races. Alison is a VES hometown hero, teaching our students through her stories and success to be the best we can be. Thank you, Alison. We wish

World Wetlands Day, celebrated annually on February 2, is an opportunity to learn about the value and importance of wetlands. This year, it also serves as an opportunity to increase efforts to protect these vital natural spaces that are disappearing before our eyes.

In a rapidly changing world, the more wetlands we lose, the more valuable the ones that remain.

Swamps, freshwater and saltwater marshes, fens and bogs all play vital roles in our day-to-day lives, providing ecological services, such as flood control and carbon storage, while also Photos submitted supporting food production. But these life-sustaining ecosystems are disappearing very quickly due to urbanization and land use practices.

The loss and degradation of wetlands NUG 12J is especially high in southern Canada, where most people live. Some estimate we’ve lost 70 per cent of our country’s wetlands in settled areas.

W i t h t h e dr o u g ht s, fl o o d s, h eat waves and storm surges experienced in many parts of Canada last year, the impacts of climate change are more NUG 13J apparent than ever, and the more reliant we become on wetlands for our own protection. Like giant sponges, wetlands absorb, hold and replenish water, trap and store carbon and help buffer our properties, farms and local infrastructure from the harmful NUG 16J effects of climate change. As wetlands continue to disappear, so too do the many benefits they provide.

About a third of all of Canada’s plant and wildlife species at risk live in wetlands, and in some cases, rely on them as their only habitat type. Wetlands NUG 33J are vital nesting and feeding grounds for waterfowl. At least half of the wildlife in North America rely on wetlands for part of their life cycle.

Within Alberta, the Nature Conservancy of Canada has conserved roughly 300 projects on private land, representNUG 51J ing over 230,000 acres of Alberta’s landscapes. Within these projects, NCC has protected close to 10,000 acres of wetlands and riparian areas home to the species that rely on these habitats. We also support wetland restoration through improved fencing and grazNUG 64J ing efforts, offsite watering systems to reduce the impact of cattle on wetlands, infrastruc ture to improve passage across creeks and streams that flow between wetlands, and planting efforts to physically restore wetlands under stress from past land uses.Nationally, NCC recently surpassed a milestone, NUG 74J helping conserve over 15 million hectares of lands and waters, 1 million in the last two years alone, doubling the pace of conservation. Thousands of wetland protection and restoration projects are included in that total.

Chronic Wasting Disease Oral Vaccine Research

Alberta Environment and Parks in collaboration with Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Environment and Alberta Conservation Association will head a project led by researchers from four universities in Western Canada will examine five potential antigens and two different oral delivery platforms to help prevent the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD).

CWD i s a pr i o n d i s e a s e af fe c ting cervids-commonly referred to as members of the deer family, such as deer, elk, moose and, caribou and is similar to bovine spongiform encephalitis (BSE) in cattle. Without being treated or managed, CWD reduces overall populations of deer, is always fatal to infected animals and, results in prions contaminating the environment over long periods.

“The ongoing spread of CWD through wildlife populations threatens a natural resource of considerable economic, ecological and social importance. An effective oral vaccine for CWD would c o m p l e m e nt ot h er s c i e n c e - b a s e d strategies to limit the prevalence and spread of CWD in wildlife populations in Alberta and beyond,” stated Minister of Environment and Parks, Jason Nixon.

Environment and Parks will be providing $381,000 over the next two years to support CWD vaccine management research at the University of Calgary and the University of Alberta.

“Environment and Parks is pleased

to provide ongoing support for CWD research and monitoring to help address what many biologists consider as the most significant disease-related wildlife conser vation issue in North America. An effective oral vaccine for CWD has the potential to significantly reduce prevalence and geographic spread of this disease in wild cervids, and consequently reduce the risk of environmental contamination from prion shed,” said Chief scientist Dr. Jonathan Thompson.

The Alberta Conservation Association is providing $500,000 over the five years through their research fund.

“CWD poses a significant risk to the future of wildlife resources across Alberta, Saskatchewan and other jurisdictions. With this funding commitment, the Alberta Conservation Association, on behalf of the hunters and anglers of Alberta, has drawn together the top researchers in the field of CWD vaccine development. Through this collaboration, we are optimistic that this project can make significant strides toward providing a new management option for controlling CWD in wild cervid populations,” commented president and CEO of the Alberta Conservation Association, Todd Zimmerling.

Saskatchewan is committing $400,000 over five years through their Fish and Wildlife Development Fund. “ This shared funding agreement between Alberta and Saskatchewan has the potential to yield an effective tool to protect our cervid populations across the Prairies. A vaccine could

assist in reducing challenges faced with premature fatalities in the animals as well as offering a reduction in transmission across more than just our two provinces,” stated Saskatchewan Minister of Environment, Warren Kaeding.

It was also said that Alberta monitors CWD more extensively than any other jurisdiction and that Environment and Parks annually invests $500,000 to its CWD monitoring and testing programs.

Every year there are approximately 11,000 heads of cervids harvested by hunters which are tested to track the prevalence and rate of geographic spread of CWD. In addition to informing Alberta’s wildlife management strategies, the data and specimens collected through this program support nearly all of the CWD research conducted by the academic community in Western Canada.

Besides developing an oral vaccine for CWD there has to be additional research to investigate how to administer an oral form that a wild deer could consume. To date, most of the CWD vaccines that have been developed are delivered through injection, and while this is an effective approach for the comparative evaluation of antigens and may provide a tool for the farmed cervid industry, control of CWD in wildlife depends on the development of an oral vaccine that can be broadly and efficiently distributed in the environment via forage.

It was said that CWD is endemic in the deer population throughout southern Alberta and, if not managed, threatens cervids throughout the province,

including at-risk population of woodland caribou.

Alberta Health, Health Canada and the World Health Organizations all advise that any deer harvested in a jurisdiction affected by CWD be tested for the disease and, if positive, that the animal not be consumed.

The site also states, “It is hard to believe we have been tracking this disease in wild deer in Alberta for over 20 years. Alberta began CWD hunter surveillance in 1998 and has one of the best continuous datasets documenting the occurrence and patterns of CWD in wild cervids, specifically in prairie / parkland ecosystems.”

Alberta Beef Producers Commission Holds Producers Meetings

In preparation for the 2022 Annual General Meeting in March, the Alberta Beef Producers (ABP) has been conducting their yearly producer meetings throughout the province. The meeting for the NorthEast (NE) zone, which encompasses the County of Vermilion River, was on Thursday, January 27. The NE zone is from the top of the province to the southern end of the M.D. of Provost, Flagstaff and Camrose, the East

side of Edmonton, and all of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.

The ABP works very hard to keep Alberta’s roughly 18 000 beef producers connected to changes and opportunities in the industry. Working with such groups as the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association, as well as provincial and federal governments, the ABP is focusing on rebuilding engagement and communication with the province’s beef producers. Services Corporation (AFSC) was on hand to discuss the various financial programs they offer.

Attendees were also given the opportunity to discuss their concerns within the industry and to present any resolutions that they would like to be carried forward to the Annual General Meeting. Budget Officer Predicts $1 Billion Orphan Well Clean Up Cost

With the release of the report ‘Estimated Cost of Cleaning Canada’s Orphan Oil and Gas Wells, ’PBO Yves Giroux stated, “As the number of orphan wells increase, so does the expected cost for cleaning up environmental liabilities. Many in the industry however believe

that Giroux is greatly underestimating the actual totals, “It’s a great disappointment,” said Regan Boychuk of the Alberta Liabilities Disclosure Project, a group whose research was cited in Giroux’s report.

The report does not include the costs of cleaning up pipelines or the oilsands.

It also does not take into account the roughly 7,400 wells that are considered abandoned but not yet orphaned. The report stated that including those would more than double the cost to $801 million.

It also did not incorporate the inactive or plugged wells in the two provinces, which totals 225, 000 wells.

23 The report only considers the cost of 23 cleaning up the land surface, and removing the equipment on a lease, it does not

consider the full clean up costs. It doesn’t look at the costs of remediating ongoing contamination from underground chemicals or leakage.

The main sources of data used for Giroux’s estimate comes from the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER), Alber ta’s Orphan Well Association (OWA), and the Government of Saskatchewan.

According to the Orphan Well Association (OWA) 2020-21 annual report, the average cost of plugging a well was $23,000 and the average cost of reclaiming a site was $22,500. Choosing Your Garden’s Annual Flowers

With all the topsy turvy weather Alberta has had in January, little portions of my flower beds have started to poke out, which brought thoughts of what to put in them this year. While I am a bit of a lazy gardener, and have several perennials in them, which require very little effort on my part to thrive, I do have some staple annual flower varieties that go in every year.

Annuals are plants that only live through one growing cycle, unlike perennials they do not hibernate underground in the winter and pop back up in the spring, they need

to be replanted every year. One of the benefits of planting annuals is that you can experiment a little with them. If the area you choose one year doesn’t seem to suit the plant, you can try a different spot the next year.

Like vegetable seeds, a couple of factors can affect which annuals you choose to grow in your yard. Look for plants that thrive in the lighting your garden receives.

Planting on the north side of your house?

Pick plants that like the shade. Full sun most of the day on your flower bed? Look for plants that like the heat. Alberta’s colder climate also dictates what grows well here,

These annuals can give any garden the stunning kaleidoscope of colours gardeners often try to achieve. These annuals can be planted outside in early spring or late summer, a time when more tender annuals can’t survive. Calendula, Dianthus, English Daisies, Forget Me Not, Clarkia Pansies, Snapdragons, Sweet Alyssum, Sweet Peas, and Violas. Some cold-tolerant annuals can be sown directly in the ground as seeds before the last frost of the spring.

These flowering plants include: Marigold,

Bachelor’s Button, Larkspur, Sunflower, Sweet Pea and Black-Eyed Susans.

Many Alberta gardeners will also sing the praises of Geraniums, as they are tough and are available in a wide range of colours. Nasturtiums tolerate full sun and can be mounding, trailing of climbing. Best of all, these easy to grow plants are edible.

Petunias, one the most trustworthy of all of the annuals, can be found in many gardens also.
