Farm Curl was back on the ice for the 69th time this past weekend at the Vermilion Curling Club. Twenty teams took to the ice Friday and Saturday, enjoying some great curling and reconnecting with friends and fellow athletes. Each team played three games, and ended the event Saturday night with a dinner prepared by Anthony’s Classic Grill.

Farm Curl Committee Chair Jason Zayac would like to acknowledge and thank all the volunteers that helped make the event a success, “Rick Mackenzie and his crew for taking such good care of the ice, Nicole and her staff upstairs Hurry hard during the first draw Friday night at Farm curl 2022. in the bar, Sharlene Moses and Kelly Bykowski for handling the registration table. Cornerstone Co-op Recognizes Years Of Service

To make any business successful, service professionals are the heart of the organization and Vermilion Cornerstone Co-op has recognized each of their valued employees at significant milestones throughout their employment.

During 2021 and into the first month of 2022 Vermilion Cornerstone Co-op recognized seven of their employees for their years of service with the organization.

In March Christie Warawa was recognized for her 15 years of service with Co-op at the Cardlock/Bulk Station. Christie began her career with Co-op as a Petroleum Clerk. What makes a great Co-op day for Christie is the interaction with her Team Members and customers and has a goal of putting a smile on the customer’s face before they walk out the door!

Sean MacLellan was recognized in July for his 10 years of service with Co-op. Sean began his Co-op career in the Deli service and has since moved into the Grocery department. Congratulations to Sean MacLellan on 10 years with the Co-op! A great Co-op day for Sean is made by the Team he works with. He enjoys coaching

others and truly enjoys working with all Team Members and seeing the successes his Team achieves.

In September Linda Elsenheimer was recognized for 30 years of service with Cornerstone Co-op. Linda began her Co-op journey as a cashier and transitioned to the grocer y of fice.

It was said that after 30 years of working the front end, Linda still loves talking with the customers. A great Co-op day for Linda is having customers leave the store happy without concerns!

Also in September Roy Telpo was recognized for his 5 years with Co-op.

Roy began his Co-op career as a pump attendant, he has advanced to become a supervisor. What makes a great Co-op day for Roy is chatting with the customers and helping them with whatever they need from the gas bar.

During December two more employees were recognized for their years of service with Cornerstone Co-op.

Jeniffer Telpo who works at the Vermilion Gas Bar was recognized for five years of service in December and says what she enjoys most is meeting people and what makes a great Co-op day is helping the

customers and sharing stories with them.

Jeniffer says a Brand Moment that she is proud of is Teamwork, “We help each other, and if you have Teamwork, Commitment will follow.”

Ken who has been a meat cutter for 20 years and working with Vermilion Co-op for 10 years was recognized for his years of service. Ken noted that, “a clean saw is a happy saw!” and says he enjoys helping to make the customers happy and getting to know them.

The new year has also seen 5 year service employee Emerson Badajos recognized for his contribution to the Vermilion Cornerstone Co-op Gas Bar. It was noted that Emerson began working Linda Elsenheimer. at the Vermilion Gas bar in November of 2016 as a pump attendant and sometimes works the till. Emerson enjoys the variety of the job as well as the people.

“I am proud to have taken part in several Brand Moments, especially when it involves the Town and the community. It always feels good giving back,” said Badajos.

Cornerstone Co-op has also recognized several other employees in their other locations during 2021.

City Of Lloydminster Approves New Event Arena Site

On January 6 during a special council meeting, the City of Lloydminster approved a location for a new event arena.

The proposed facility will be constructed on city-owned land just east of 40th avenue south of the Gold Horse Casino. Choosing the new location for the arena has moved the project into the design stage which the City Administration needed so they could apply for grant funding of an estimated $33 million through federal and provincial grant opportunities.

“The new arena proposal represents a transformational development for Lloydminster. Therefore, a great deal of consideration has gone into identifying a site that makes good logistical sense for residents and generates long-term economic benefits. Recent studies have shown us, beyond a doubt, that the usable life of the Centennial Civic Centre is nearly at its end, which creates a level of urgency for the City to replace that popular recreational asset,” said Mayor Gerald Aalbers.

“With the site now confirmed, we’ll turn our attention to securing the federal and provincial funding required to advance this exciting endeavour.”

The project cost is estimated is $51 million and without the funding from the two governments, it would put the project in a difficult financial position. The first cut-

off for the grant application was on January 11.

“Without it (funding) we are in a very difficult financial position, which is why we’ll examine all possibilities before we turn to the taxpayers. We don’t have the money in the bank right now to build the facility, so we need to engage the community, help them understand how we’re going to pay for it, what we’re looking for, and that we’re open to sponsorship,” commented Mayor Aalbers.

Still, in the conceptual stage, the current facility proposal includes plans for an event arena and community arena, while the larger site proposal allows for slo-pitch amenities and supports potential future leisure-focused development and commercial business space. Later this year, a stormwater pond will be developed on the site, which will be integrated into the design of the district, including potentially incorporating a trail system. The City is currently planning a large-scale community engagement campaign for early 2022.

The two additional locations brought forward for consideration were: 1. North Site: north of 57 Street, south of 62 Street and east of the LloydEx grounds 2. West Site: west of 75 Avenue, north of the rail line and south of 67 Avenue Background

In 2019, the City of Lloydminster completed a high-level analysis of cityowned facilities. The study analyzed 17 buildings based on factors such as age, condition and capital cost for rehabilitation or renovation and much more. Study results have helped guide budget considerations and community planning.

Each facility report was combined to create a comparative analysis based on

the year of construction, building condition rating, estimated costs to maintain and operate, assessment findings and action plan recommendations within the Community Facilities Assessment Report, More information about the study is available at yourvoicelloyd.ca/CFAR. Town Council Appoints New Fire Chief

Vermilion’s Town Council held a regular meeting on January 18, here are some of the highlights. After a couple of technical hiccups with the Youtube channel, viewers were able to get caught up on the meeting.

Council appointed interim Fire Chief

Anton Krys as Fire Chief for the Town of Vermilion. Krys was filling the role with the retirement of Bill Roth last October.

The position of Director of Infrastructure has been filled, and Mr. Ben McPhee will be starting on January 24, 2022.

After being presented with a proposed green space development, council

voted to table the motion until after their strategic planning sessions in February.

Council approved the Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) recommendations of the FCSS funds for 2022. Visit the Town of Vermilion website under council highlights for a complete listing of the allocations.

Cabbage Soup

I love making home made soups during the winter months. A big pot of soup, with do our family for a couple of meals. To make life easy, I buy a bag of shredded cabbage to use for this soup. Home made soup is a good way to get a lot of servings of vegetables, dished up in a delicious broth. Not only that, these vegetables are packed with lots of healthy advantages for you. Both cabbage and onions have major health benefits.

Research has shown that compounds in cabbage are converted to isothiocyanates that provide protection in our bodies from breast, bladder, prostate and colon cancer. A University of Otago study in New

Zealand found that the isothiocyanates in cruciferous vegetable such as cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts and cauliflower can even cause cancer cells to destruct.

A study in Poland found that women that consumed 4 servings a week of cabbage had significantly lower breast cancer rates than women who consumed only one serving a week. Regularly eating raw or lightly steamed cabbage helps lower cholesterol.

Cabbage is rich in antioxidants and exhibits anti-inflammatory properties in our bodies.

Cabbage juice aids in the healing of stomach ulcers and improves digestive health.

While we don’t usually think of cabbage as a source of vitamin C, it is interesting to note that 1 cup of cabbage provides 50 % of the daily recommended value of vitamin C and 91% of DRV of vitamin K. Amazingly cabbage also has omega 3 in the form of alpha linolenic acid. Cabbage scores low

on the glycemic index, is low in carbohydrate and is a good choice to prevent blood sugar spikes. Cabbage has only 33 calories per cup, making it a perfect diet food that is packed with healthy vitamins.

Red cabbage is a nutrient powerhouse with 6 to 8 times more antioxidant abilities than green cabbage. Onions are a natural source of quercetin and chromium, which both assist in blood sugar control. Onions like garlic contain sulfur compounds that work to detox our bodies by binding to heavy metals such as lead, mercury and cadmium and then escorting them out of the body.

Tomatoes contain many important vitamins and antioxidants including lots of lycopene, vitamin C and vitamin A. Lycopene is what gives the tomato its red color.

Lycopene helps prevent prostate, lung and stomach cancer. The lycopene in toma-

toes retains its potency and benefits, even when cooked. I hope you enjoy this healthy and heart-warming soup.

Cabbage Soup 8 cups of chicken or vegetable broth 1 can of stewed tomatoes, 14 ounce 1 large yellow onion, chopped 2 cloves of garlic, minced 3 tablespoons olive oil 4 carrots, sliced into coins 6 cups cabbage, shredded or finely cut 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon dill weed or 1/2 teaspoon thyme.

In a heavy bottomed pot sauté, the onions and garlic until half are golden brown. Add the broth, and the remaining ingredients. Cook until the carrots are tender. Taste, and add any additional seasoning to suit your taste.

Electing The First Overseer Of Vermilion

W h e n Ver m i l i o n was just beginning in 1906, there was a need to elect someone who would lead the community. As Vermilion was not a town yet, there was no mayor but instead there was an overseer.

In order to continue in the process of incorporation, a meeting of the electors of the Village of Vermilion was ordered by the

PET OF THE WEEK HANK

Hank is the sweetest lil’ boy that loves to play with kitties and pooches as well! He is beyond friendly and ready to make friends with anything that will come and say hello to him. Sometimes we are amazed at the resilience of animals and the love they still show even when they are in the worst condition imaginable.

Hank came into the shelter with his tail still intact but completely de-gloved, meaning all the skin was taken off of his tail. He needed a tail amputation immediately. He went straight into foster after that, and he didn’t even act like he just went through a traumatic event. He was so happy to have food in his belly and a foster momma and poppa that loved him and animals to play with.

With think Hank would do well in any home, with children of all ages and other friendly animals. As long as he is getting his much-needed attention then he is happy. At the end of 2021, two internet celebrities decided to start their own charity. The purpose of this charity was to help clean up the seas. Mark Rober, a previous NASA engineer gone mad scientist, and Jimmy Donaldson aka “Mr. Beast” a creator on the popular platform Youtube whose fame came from giving away generous amounts of money to strangers in various videos.

The Ocean Cleanup plan to remove 30 million pounds of garbage from the ocean’s coastal regions. Their campaign asks people to donate one dollar to remove one pound of trash. They plan to accomplish this task in a couple of different ways.

The first way in which they will be removing the trash is quite simple; manual labour.

Their team will be travelling to different coasts and beaches all over the world to help clean some of the plastic and garbage from the coast. They will also entrust a professional team to remove some of the lost fishing equipment floating around in the ocean.

A fork in the road Do you have certain items that br in g you ha p p i ness and contentment? They could be anything. A favourite sweater that envelopes you with warmth and love when you pull it on, a cozy chair, some worn-in slippers, a blanket, or maybe a comfort food.

Alternatively, you could be like my husband, Tom, and his son Todd, who feel that same thrill of pleasure and well-being when holding good cutlery.

Yes, you heard me—cutlery. We heard the whole tableware lecture over Christmas when Todd and his family joined us for a meal. In fact, when Tom launched into his familiar refrain on the benefits of a properly constructed fork, I stopped him and advised the man to save us all a lot of time by penning his silverware rant onto paper and leaving it on my desk, where I could run-off a few duplicates.

Then, before we sat down to the next meal, he and Todd could just issue us

each a copy that we might be enlightened at length. There could be a question and answer period, followed by notetaking wherein we could highlight critical points of the address for later reference. This would ensure the appropriate measures were adhered to and the correct utensils dispensed. This would eliminate a need for the speech at all.

But no. We were treated to the full-length version.

Are you aware that all cutlery is not made equal? Take it from me, it’s not. First, you need a stalwart, no-nonsense fork that would never bend under the pressure of a resistant potato or the repeated jabbing of innocent lettuce leaves. Its tines must be aligned perfectly, allowing it to slide off the tongue effortlessly. Furthermore, it must be sturdy; created of quality metal. None of this flimsy thin crap.

Also, a good knife must be provided. A substantial implement you could count on when sawing a side of beef, or a well-done steak, as the case may be. It needs to have a handle that gives a man “somethin’ to hang onto,” and the weight and sharpness must be balanced, allowing ease of use.

The second way in which the team plans to remove garbage is a little more interesting. They plan to use a large robot that will sit in the water where the rivers connect to the ocean. This robot collects the garbage before it can get lost in the ocean while also leaving the sea life unaffected. According to The Team Sea’s team, “Rivers are one of the primary sources of ocean plastic pollution: they are the arteries that carry waste from land to the ocean. The Ocean Cleanup’s research has found that 1000 rivers are responsible for nearly 80% of pollution entering the ocean from rivers.”

Vermilion Tigers vs. The Lloydminster Bandits

In the Vermilion Tigers’ latest game on Saturday, January 22, they opposed the Lloydminster Bandits on the ice. The game started off with both teams getting a point back to back, by the Lloydminster bandits’ Lindsay Gibbons and Vermilion Tigers’ Lyndon Fadden. The pressure was on as it was clear from the start both teams were playing at the same level. The first period continued until about the midway point when the Lloydminster Bandits’ own Drew Harty scored another point for the team.

The second period began with the Lloyd team hammering in their lead. Their players Nate Crookedneck and Lindsay Gibbons proceeded to get two pucks in the net within 30 seconds of each other. The Vermilion team was suddenly in a tough spot with a lot of ground to recover. To the Tigers’ dismay, the Bandits yet again

scored a point. This left the Tigers way behind at a score of 1-5, though they were not going to give up yet.

Out of nowhere, the team seemed to get another jolt of confidence as Deven Culford finished off the period with a goal for the Tigers. The team took that same energy into the 3rd period ready to do what it takes to take back the lead. Their players scored point after point until Landon Petiot, Deven Culford, and Max Quist each scored and balanced up the scoreboard.

No one was able to sink another shot before the end of this final period meaning the game was taken into overtime.

Although this could have made a perfect comeback story, the Vermilion Tigers were not the ones to take the final shot.

The Lloydminster Bandits’ player Peter Willier made the final goal. With this, the game concluded 6-5 for the Lloydminster Bandits.

Dance Performances Shine At Malanka To Go

The Vermilion Ukrainian Cultural Association celebrated the New Year with a wonder ful Malanka event on J anu ar y 2 2 . M al anka To G o g ave community members the opportunity to not only enjoy a delicious Ukrainian meal and partake in a fabulous dance performance, but to also support the cultural asso c iation. The Malanka dinner is usually one of the Association’s major fundraisers, and while ticket sales fell short of the roughly 500 meals they usually serve, the funds raised will help the association with the costs of the dance classes and other events held every year. Unable to hold their traditional sit down dinner and dance event, the group had dinner

ready ‘To Go’. People were invited to watch a dance performance, then take their pre-packaged meal home with them. Holubchi donated by Mrs. J’s Catering and Kutia donated by Ray Wynnyk rounded out a delicious ham dinner with Pyrohy and Nachynka that was well worth the wait until people got home.

Twenty five dancers performed seven lively, energetic dances with kids as young as four showing off the vibrant, colourful costumes that highlight Ukrainian dancing. From the elaborate Volyn dance by Miss Cassandra’s group two class to Kayla Stelmaschuk ’s solo performance in her last year of dancing here, everyone in the audience was treated to a lovely evening of entertaining dance and delicious food.

Stan Hartwell was born January 20, 1944 in Vermilion and was a prominent figure in the community, especially in the Vermilion Minor Hockey family. Stan was known as a rink rat because he was always at the rink even before his four sons were involved with the sport.

Stan was known for his eagerness to help the hockey community in any way whether it was coaching or driving the children to games, it was said that hockey was his life, and he Mark was also on the Vermilion Minor Your Hockey executive.

Calendar February 2003 Stan passed away and the following year his family established the Stan Hartwell Memorial Award, that has been presented yearly ever since.

The award (trophy) is awarded annually to the most dedicated volunteer in the Vermilion Minor Hockey Association. The recipient is to be nominated by the commu-

nity and or minor hockey participants. The executive committee determines each year’s winner. Acceptable nominations will include; coaches, assistant coaches, managers, parents, fans or other volunteers. Nominations will not be accepted for current minor hockey executive and board, businesses or individuals who are paid for their services. A member of the Hartwell family, or approved designate, presents the trophy and plaque each season. The Memorial Trophy remains at the Stadium for public viewing, and a Memorial Plaque is given to each winner.

Mrs. Dewing started as an Educational Assistant at our school in 2013. For many years she worked to support the learning of students in Kindergarten to Grade 6. Her warm smile and

great sense of humour make her a favourite among students. A couple of years ago, Mrs. Dewing decided to push herself towards an exciting new challenge… she took over the role as our school’s resident chef! Mrs. Dewing prepares over 100 hot lunch trays per day to our elementary students in K-6. The younger students have the opportunity to enjoy a hot lunch 3 days per week. They love it when she makes pizza and hot dogs! In addition to preparing hot lunch, Mrs. Dewing also serves approximately 60 junior high and

high school Spartans at the cafeteria!

Fan favourites among the older Spartans include poutine and her famous BBQ chicken wraps. Mrs. Dewing has to be prepared in order to feed the masses! She plans out our hot lunch menu a month in advance and weekly specials at the cafeteria are posted in the school newsletter and on a board outside the kitchen. When I asked what her favourite part of running the kitchen was, the answer was one that was sweet for all: “Baking the desserts!” she exclaimed. All great heroes need their

sidekicks! Mrs. Dewing has two young gentlemen join to help her portion and distribute the lunch trays to the elementary students. Mrs. Dewing also has help everyday in the cafeteria. Mr. Chase and Mr. Whelan are always on the front lines, taking cash and giving smiles and delicious food to students. A new year means time for reflection, and boy are we grateful to those that help our students have full bellies so that they are ready to learn.

Thank you Mrs. Dewing, and all your sous chefs, for the delicious hot meals!

U11 Tournament

On January 22nd and 23rd, the U11 Hockey tournament took place. Young players from the U11 age group were given the opportunity to participate in a fun and competitive local tournament. The tournament lasted two days with the majority of the games taking place on Saturday, with the final two concluding the weekend on Sunday.

The games were hosted in the Vermilion stadium

and friends and family gathered to watch the young players duke it out. Parents and players alike could be heard shouting words of encouragement from the sidelines to their players on the ice.

The Vermilion team achieved the ‘runner up’ status in the ‘B’ Group and were presented with metal when the tournament concluded. This tournament was the final game for the U11 players. For more information on the 2022/23 season please visit vermilionminorhockey.com.

Well, the last couple of weeks have reminded everyone how temperamental Canadian winters can be. Being stuck inside through the cold has provided plenty of opportunities to dream about the summer and gardening. It has also provided lots of time to do a little surfing looking for other northerner gardeners.

A very interesting blog/website, created by a couple who homestead at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, has some very valuable insight into gardening in cold climates. Many longtime gardeners in this area know the ups and downs of gardening in a colder climate, but for those people who are new to the adventures of short growing seasons, here are some tips for picking out your seeds for the season.

Start with organizing the seeds you have left from last year. If you can save

your seeds, you are looking at saving a little money to start your season off.

WHAT SEEDS TO CHOOSE To pick the right type of seeds, it is best to know the number of frost-free days this area has. This part of Alberta is growing zone 3b, and according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the last frost in the Vermilion area can occur as late as June 14, with the first frost of the fall coming as early as August 22. Now these dates are not set in stone, but it never hurts to be ready for a short 69 day outdoor growing season. There are years where over a hundred days can fall between frosts, and years where snow has dampered the August long weekend.

Aim for vegetables that have a 50-70 day maturity length. Anything with longer timelines will need to be started indoors.

Keep in mind that days to maturity are counted from the time a seedling is trans-

planted, not the seed starting. Many seeds are started indoors long before the last frost-free day. That time is not included in the time to maturity.

Plan to grow what you will eat. Also plan to grow what accomplishes your gardening goals. Want vegetables to last through next winter? Then look for vegetables that will keep in cold storage or freeze or can well. Just experimenting with gardening or new at it? Ask questions and use the advice from other experienced gardeners, they will know which species and varieties of seeds are easy to grow and maintain.

WHERE TO GET SEEDS Seeds can be ordered from a seed catalog or online as well as bought from local suppliers. Remember it is good to choose a seed grower close to you or at least similar in climate. Take note of where seed companies get their seeds from.

Extended Deadline On Livestock Water Project Application

After last summer’s drought, many farmers had trouble providing water for their livestock, as well as difficulty sourcing resources for projects. Both the Canadian government and the Saskatchewan government decided to offer some financial assistance for those contracting for livestock water projects. Minister David Marit said in Tuesday’s statement,

“It is important to provide more time for producers to complete their water projects so they can take advantage of additional funding to develop secure and sustainable water sources to meet the needs of their operation and help them mitigate the impacts of future dry conditions.”

The changes to the program were announced on January 18, 2022, and may now require a preliminary appli-

cation submission by Mar. 31, 2022, in order to receive additional funding for the completion of projects.

“The past year has been a harsh reminder of how important water reliability is to agricultural producers,” said Marie-Claude Bibeau, federal minister of agriculture and agri-food. Health Sciences Association Appeals To Alberta Government For Help Ensuring Care For Albertans

In a press release on January 17, Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA) President, Mike Parker asked the Alberta Government for three things to help ensure health care is there for Albertans in this fifth wave and beyond.

The Health Sciences Association of Alberta is a trade union representing over 27,000 paramedical technical, professional and general support employees in the

public and private health-care sectors of Alberta. HSAA professionals’ mandate is to always be there when Albertans need care.

But without proper government support, this is a struggle to achieve.

During the week of January 10 - 16, there were 266 unfilled paramedic shifts throughout the province, and three labs in Edmonton are closed indefinitely due to there not being enough staff. There are over 1000 health care vacancies in Alberta, and the HSAA states that steps must be

taken to support the health-care professionals already working diligently everyday.
