The U13 Minor Hockey tournament took place from January 14th to the 16th.

Young players from the U13 age group were given the opportunity to participate in a fun and competitive local tournament.

In addition to the home players, teams travelled from Cold Lake and Lacombe as well for this tournament.

The games were hosted in the Vermilion stadium and were filled with quite the crowd (by Covid standards). Friends and family gathered to watch the young players duke it out and show what they have learned while playing the last season.

These up-and-comers gave it their all as they shot around the ice trying to get the upper hand on their opponents. From the

crowd, you could hear the enthusiastic coaches giving tips to their players from the sidelines. The players used this time to experiment with their plays and try to find out what works and what doesn’t in a game of hockey.

By the end of the tournament, the players had surely shown off their skills in play. Dashing on the ice with grace and shooting the puck with determination.

But ultimately at the end of the day, the kids were able to enjoy a fun time playing hockey with their friends. These games mark the end of the 2021 season, but not to despair as a new 2022 season is just around the corner. Vermilion’s Economic Development Department: Enhancing Growth And Expansion

All municipalities depend on economic development to not only grow, but to survive. Without business opportunities and activities to attract tourists and new residents, a community faces some very strong struggles to survive.

What is Economic Development? It is developing, diversifying and maintaining suitable economic, social and political environments in a community.

This allows balanced growth to be realized, thereby increasing the wealth of the community. Most municipalities have an Economic Development Officer or Manager to oversee this vitality important component of Town Administration. In Vermilion, Mary Lee Prior is the Town’s Economic Development Manager.

Just the above definition is a full-time occupation, and like many small towns, in Vermilion this position has many more roles, all of which help enhance the town’s grow th. Unlike an urban centre, whose Economic Development Departments consist of teams of staff for several different branches, Rural Economic Development Departments are often one person with an assistant.

This is the case in Vermilion, Prior has an assistant (whom she shares with the Mayor and Chief Administration Officer) to help her cover all the areas that Economic Development encompasses.

Foremost, the Economic Development department takes care of Business Retention, Expansion and Investment (BREI). When a new enterprise wants to expand into Vermilion, the economic officer is the first point of contact for information regarding the Town’s needs and wants, as well as

available real estate. They must be able to act as a liaison with the community, as well as be knowledgeable on everything going on in the area. New businesses and developers are looking to deal with someone who is trustworthy and can maintain confidentiality.

One of Prior’s main focuses is the retention of existing businesses in Vermilion along with assisting in expansion of those businesses. She must be aware of potential land available for expansion, as well as being responsible for knowing which programs and incentives a business might qualify for to encourage this growth.

Another substantial part of the job is business investment. Prior is the first contact for new business or development inquiries, she is responsible for promoting incentives available (for example, the retail development incentive program and the industrial development incentive program) and needs to be aware of potential promising sites and land for sale (retail, industrial and residential).

New Ideas for Living, the Town’s brand falls under Economic Development’s umbrella. Promoting all, of the positives of Vermilion, and why people should come to Vermilion, to shop, visit, invest in, and live here encompasses a significant part of Prior’s work. Economic Development also establishes partnerships that create BREI and Tourism Opportunities. These may be with local businesses to offer specials to visitors, like local hotels (hotel business deals get overnight stays), or regional partnerships (#take it to the Lake, #SkiNorth AB, Communit y Futures, Regional Collaboration Alberta HUB) to promote campaigns like Explore and Play at

vermilion.ca which showcases Vermilion through stories and videos.

Attracting tourists and visitors to Vermilion are all part of the economic development marketing role. Through outlets like #explorevermilion, GO EAST RTO, Invest in Alberta Magazine, Travel AB, and Vermilion Magazine, Prior’s Social Media Reporter and Visitor Information Centre (VIC) Summer Students promote all Vermilion has to offer. Vermilion has 1 of only 5 accredited VIC’s in northeast Alberta.

One of the more successful campaigns they have undertaken is the Best Of series highlighting some of the boutiques, dining, places to stay, and home decor retailers in Town. Prior also does Friday radio spots promoting Vermilion. The Town utilizes social media, has a website and a phone app too. Locally there is a community events calendar and Visitor Information Centre, and regionally Prior has established partnerships with several organizations, like Economic Developers Alberta (EDA), International Economic Development Council (IEDC), Alberta Municipalities and Travel AB to promote Vermilion worldwide. Locally, the Good Life Institute (another branch under Prior’s d epar tment) promotes Ver milion’s brand and is a provincially recognized tourism draw for Vermilion with their annual events that bring the community together.

Prior also deals with a large portion of how the Town communicates also hosting the communications department role. Economic Development takes care of the Town’s press releases and external communications, some of the Town’s website content, all of the Town’s social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter,

Youtube), and participates in many of Town council’s engagements (meetings and presentations).

Prior also acts as the Town’s Emergency Public Information Officer (EPIO), if a major disaster were to hit the community and has a role in the Town’s Disaster Master Plan if it ever needs to be implemented.

Under Prior’s leadership, Vermilion’s Economic Development Department has been honoured 17 times since 2013 including Prior being named the 2021 Alberta Economic Development Officer of the Year. These accomplishments acknowledging the successful campaigns that promote Vermilion and build its economic base in all sectors of business. These well-deserved recognitions are a testament to the central role of Economic Development; helping Vermilion grow and expand.

I love French onion soup and January is always a great month for warming soups.

Onions are a great source of the nutrient quercetin, and the good news is that cooked onions retain this beneficial nutrient, undamaged by the heat, plus cooked onions are easier on the breath than raw onions. Quercetin is a flavonoid that may inhibit the growth of certain cancers. Quercetin has been shown to lower bad cholesterol, raise good cholesterol and be protective of the cardio-vascu-

lar system. Onions are a natural source of both quercetin and chromium, which both assist in blood sugar control. Onions and garlic contain sulfur compounds that work to detox our bodies by binding to heavy metals such as lead, mercury and cadmium and then escorting them out of the body. With all of these great benefits it is no wonder that some researchers are wondering if it is actually the onion, which is responsible for the French paradox, which allows the French to indulge in so many rich foods while remaining heart healthy. Onions are one of Julia Child’s favorite ingredients and are a staple in French cookery. Onions add a lot a flavour and health benefits to so many dishes, making it a favored ingredi-

ent in Canadian prairie cooking as well. I have oven proof French Onion soup bowls, but if you don’t have any, this recipe can be modified for regular soup bowls.

French Onion Soup 4 yellow onions (chopped) 2 cloves of garlic (finely minced) 2 Tablespoons olive oil or butter 8 cups beef stock (approx. 2 liters) 2 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce Salt and pepper to taste Cheese ( mozzarella, or gruyere) Bread (baguette, or bread) Chop the onions, season with a sprinkle of salt and pepper and fry with garlic in the oil until half are golden brown. In a stock pot heat the beef broth, add the Worces-

tershire sauce and the onions, and cook for 15 – 30 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Cut the baguette into thick slices, 2 per bowl and toast in the broiler on both sides, then cover one per bowl with grated cheese and broil until the cheese melts and bubbles and just starts to brown.

To assemble, put one slice of plain toasted baguette in the bowl, top with a few slices of cheese, ladle in the hot soup, and then top with the broiled cheese toasted baguette.

Serve Alternatively, you can at the last step top the soup with a plain toasted baguette, top with grated cheese and broil in the oven, until the cheese is melted, bubbling and starting to brown.

The Great Depression was not an easy time for many, but through initiatives like this in Vermilion, it helped to make the Dirty Thirties a bit more festive and a bit more profitable for those who were seeing their bank accounts begin to dry up.

The simple truth of the modern age is that most people spend at least some t i m e o n li n e. T h e average person spends about 3 and a half hours a day connected. So it’s clear that the internet has some impact on our lives, but you may not realize just how big an impact it has. In fact many of the decisions we make come from what we see when we are browsing on social media apps. Simple things like what to eat, what movie to watch next, or even personal and foundational pieces of identity like our hobbies, political ideas, and beliefs.

This all might seem obvious to some, but what might be a little less obvious is how little you control what you see when you browse on these apps.

Is it just me?

Is it just me, or do you find teenagers these days often have a better vehicle than you? I mean, great if their parents can afford one, but there’s just some element of it all which irks me. When a young man, barely able to see over the steering wheel, sweeps past me in an enormous new truck on his way to school, I’m vaguely irritated. Of course, all young people don’t have new vehicles.

Take my son Justin for instance.

Although not a teen any longer, he’s a fine example of starting out with very little, and building up from there. He motors about the countryside in a car which qualifies for antique status; a 1982 Firebird. Unfortunately, it would also qualify for the junkyard. I asked him to take my vehicle into town for repairs a few weeks back, which left me to drive his. Mistake!

what they will show a user. These algorithms are complex conjunctions of what the platform thinks you want to see, and what they would like to show you. This gives these companies a lot of power when it comes to influencing someone’s opinions. These systems are used in everything from recommended sections, viral pages and are even used in search feeds. If you are shown something over and over again, even if you are not aware of it, on a sub-conscience level you will still remember it. This makes it more likely that you will interact with this type of content in the future. Companies know this and love to take advantage of this principle.

This kind of subliminal messaging could be quite a dangerous issue if people are not made aware of it. Of course, companies probably don’t intend to brainwash you, and that’s not quite what’s happening. Rather the algorithms they build clearly favour certain topics over others, and when the user trusts “Google” or “Facebook” to give accurate

wheel. Hunkering low to the ground, I shuffled my feet out well past any reasonable center of gravity, sidled up to the open door, and flung myself within.

You’ve heard people say their vehicle has low clearance? They have no flippin idea. I swear I felt gravel crunch directly beneath my posterior. Swinging the door shut, I glanced up for a brief moment at the dog, who stood outside licking the glass, before leaning back and passing from view onto the flattened seat.

Where were the controls to move it forward, and upright? Great, there were none. I lay recumbent, staring at the bare, metal roof. “Good—bloody— grief!” I texted to my son, holding the phone over my face as I typed these words of incredulity.

Stretching out a hesitant toe I could just reach the pedals, and if I gripped the steering wheel hard, whilst leveraging myself upright, it was possible to get it in gear and make out the dim outline of a road through the frosty window. Mercifully, I only had to drive it two miles.

Nonetheless, the trip was made safely, as I’m sure you’ve surmised. It was an interesting journey, as I can’t say I’ve ever operated a motor vehicle lying down before. My passage through town was uneventful too, although a few interested bystanders did pause to stare as a seemingly driverless car rumbled past.

They might also have wondered why it endlessly signaled a left turn. I wasn’t aware, but once on, the light failed to cancel, soundlessly indicating my intention to exit the road for a mile and a half.

In hindsight, this may not have been the right incident to cite in order to prove

Canadian Red Cross Ending Involvement In Swimming

In a public announcement on Janua r y 12 , t h e C a n a d i a n R e d C r o s s informed the public that after 76 years in the field of water safety, they will be stepping away from the swim and life g u ar d pro gr am s to fo c u s m ore resources towards their already established humanitarian efforts.

Ac c or d ing to the Canad ian Re d Cross CEO Conrad Sauvé this decision was driven by regular assessments the organization conducts of all its services that consider evolving humanitarian needs, the evolution of the marketplace, and alignment with its strategic direction. “We are enormously proud of what we have accomplished in providing water safety training and we are truly grateful to entire

generations of staff and volunteers who dedicated themselves to creating a program of the highest standard,” he said. “ We continue to believe in the importance of water safety training, but no longer saw that we offered unique ex per tise in that area. We also believe the relative humanitarian need for water safety training has been surpassed by demands in other areas in which we are well positioned to make a difference.”

The organization has established a partnership with the Lifesaving Society Canada to allow their training partners to transition their certifications to the Society’s guidelines and programs in the least disruptive way possible.

This collaboration gives training partners until December 31, 2022 to transition all their current cer tifications

Keeping Carbon Monoxide Out In The Winter

With the combination of mild, melting conditions last week, and the predicted return of cold temperatures this week, it is not a bad idea to make sure your home is safe from carbon monoxide leaks.

Labelled as the “silent killer”, carbon monoxide is an odorless gas that cannot be smelt or tasted that has the capability to kill. Even minimal exposure to it can make you feel sick, often like you have the flu. Headaches, nausea, dizziness and shortness of breath are signs of carbon monoxide in your home, and people most at risk are infants, small children, pregnant women, elderly people, and people with heart or lung problems.

Carbon monoxide gas is produced

by the incomplete burning of fuels, and faulty burners or clogged chimneys are often a cause. Gas furnaces, hot water heaters, cars, fireplaces, wood stoves and kerosene heaters are all sources of carbon monoxide. The Canadian Safety Council (CSC) recommends having chimneys, furnace and gas fired appliances checked by a professional every year for leaks.

To reduce the chances of carbon monoxide in your home, follow these tips: • Eliminate CO at the source. Make the maintenance of your furnace, fireplace, and all fuel-burning appliances an absolute priority. Have them checked and cleaned each year.

• Install a certified carbon monoxide

alarm in your home and check it regularly to make sure the battery is working.

• Know the symptoms of CO poisoning.

If they appear, it is important to get everyone, including pets, outside to fresh air immediately.

• Never heat your home with a gas stove.

• Never use a barbeque, charcoal or hibachi grill in the home or in an enclosed area.

• Never use a gas-powered generator inside your home.

• Before and after a snowfall, make sure vents for the dr yer, furnace, stove and fire place are clear of

Even though it is the middle of winter, many gardening enthusiasts are already gearing up for the 2022 gardening season. For some, planning and preparing for their garden is the therapy they need to get through the last long months of winter. For others, planning now saves them time during the busy spring season.

There are lots of things you can do to start getting ready.

1. Take stock of what you have. Do you need some new tools or supplies? Start watching for bargains and sales.

2. Get organized. Plan your gardening goals for the season.

3. Clean and repair the tools you have, sharpen blades, oil moving parts.

4. January is the month to check out your seed catalogs. Order your tried and true standards and favourites, and pick out a few new ones to try this year.

5. Check your seed inventory, and put any that are too old in the compost.

6. Make a master plan of your garden, including any new spaces you want to expand into.

snow. After a snowstorm or when the temperatures are extremely low, you should go out and visually inspect the vents. If there’s a lot of snow, clear a path of 2 to 3 feet around each vent and if ice is forming, gently knock it off without damaging the pipes.

A carbon monoxide detector is the best protection from this dangerous gas.

The CSC suggests installing them where they can be easily heard, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installation, and test them at least once a month.

since it was my first Christmas without Len. We would always enjoy seeing the Christmas lights. Once again thank you to the efforts of everyone for their Christmas light displays whether it was a smaller amount or the fence with so many pretty ideas, or the

beautiful nativity scene with the north star or the trees that had such colourful lighting ideas, or the unique colour combos on the straight roofline lighting and such a variety of outdoor characters. It was all great.

clean, and safe for us all. The floors are still gleaming after all of their hard work over the holidays. Thank you both for keeping our school beautiful, it does not go unnoticed!

Our school would like to extend our gratitude once again to the staff at the Lakeland Aquatic Centre. Jackie and Carmen did a phenomenal job teaching students of various age and ability levels to swim.

The Kindergarten classes had the opportunity to go for a fun swim before Christmas with their friends. Don Doherty, our OHS coordinator, spent this past Thursday teaching first aid to our grade 10 students.

They learned CPR, how to use an AED, and many other life saving safety techniques. “It takes a village to raise a child” and lucky for us we have amazing community members that work together with us to support our Spartans.

Many classes took advantage of the warm winter weather to go skating at the Town of Vermilion’s outdoor skating rink.

There was laughter, a few slips, and lots of fun! The other exciting outdoor activity that has begun again on our small hill is “crazy carpeting”. The smiles have been contagious as zip down and trudge back up the

hill for another go!

Our junior girls and boys basketball teams were both victorious in games played against Provost Catholic school last week. They were big wins for both teams, the boys defeated Provost with a score of 52-30 and the girls a 41-12 victory. Way to go Spartans!

that if they reach their year end goal by the end of January, they will get to order a new book for the library. We are also planning a special AR day near the end of January. In the month of December, students read 1288 points for a total of 6155 school wide AR points to date. The division 1 top reader is Liam McKinnon (14.5 points) and in division 2, it is Autumn Jaremco with 48 points. Congratulations to each of those students and to all the students who fit in a lot of reading time over the break. Mrs. Joa discussed the January virtue of fairness, telling students that fairness is about everyone getting what 3” theywide need version to be success-

ful. Then she showed students a wonderful video to represent this virtue. Mr. Haslehurst discussed science fair and then performed a virtual experiment on color mixing. Mrs. Joa recognized the students who dressed up for Dress to Impress or Career Day. We ended the assembly with a movement activity.

The 23rd annual science fair will take place on February 4. Students in Grades 4-6 will perform an experiment and students in Grades 1-3 have a choice of an experiment or a research project. All students will work on individual projects and all the experimentation and research will be done at home.
