On November 29 The Beauty Hive was officially recognized by the Town of Vermilion through an official ribbon-cutting ceremony. They were gifted a plaque by council members to display in their business. This is part of a long-running tradition of welcoming new businesses to the town, as well as the greater sentiment of supporting small businesses. Councillor Robert Pulyk welcomed the new business on behalf of the council.

“The town is certainly very happy to have the Beauty Hive in downtown Vermilion, it is another great way to attract more people into our community,” commented

Councillor Pulyk.

This new salon has taken on an older building in town and given it new life.

The interior feels welcoming and homely upon the first visit, with staff even offering beverages to those who enter. The Beauty Hive started with just one person a few years ago and has since expanded to have a pretty large team. Bailey Brotzel commented, “we’ve been open here in Vermilion for about three weeks now, and the support that we’ve had from the community has been outstanding. I came from the city four years ago and since being in Vermilion, it has been nice having a community that gives back so The Beauty Hive sign in front of the building. Photos Braxton Hoare much.”

FOCUS Has New Executive Director

After two decades serving Vermilion and the surrounding communities as a paramedic, Rob Snow has made a big change and have become the new Executive Director of FOCUS. Taking over the lead p osit i o n o n N ovem ber 1, Snow is responsible for overseeing both the Disabilities program in the Vermilion area and the Family and Child Support Services (FCSS) program in the Lloydminster region.

With two very able Program Directors and their teams managing the day to day operations of the programs, Snow is able to concentrate on the organizations dealings with the two provincial ministries that fund their programs, and find new opportunities where the services FOCUS provides can benefit the communities in the area.

After serving on the FOCUS Board for a number of years, Snow was very familiar with the organization and its strengths and struggles. The combination of this knowledge and his experience of writing policy and procedure and guidelines while in his former occupation, it has allowed him to step into his new position with the confidence that the positive changes he has in mind will be successful.

Bliss Dickson Bliss Dickson passed away on November 30, 2021 in Camrose at the age of 87 years.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 64 years Betty; children Carol (Keith) Farkash, Joanne Dickson (Karine Larochelle), and Laurie (Greg) MacKinnon; grandchildren Craig Farkash (Matana), Cole Farkash, Joseph Dickson, Ashley (Donny) Cruz, and Haley (Tyler) Kerr; great grandchildren Emma, Hunter, Harper, Ethyn, Zakery, Greysen, and Reid; sister Annabelle Johnson; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was predeceased by his parents Henderson & Rena Dickson; and siblings Campbell Dickson, Marion Featherstone, and Ethel Hodgson.

A Public Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at the First United Church, Vermilion.

Paradise Valley’s Rescue Truck Is Hard At Work.

With the continued unwavering support of their community, the Paradise Valley Fire Department finally saw the arrival of their new rescue truck this fall. The truck, which arrived in September, has been utilized on calls, and has proven to be an invaluable tool. As reported earlier this year, the department had already had the training needed to safely and efficiently

operate the truck, so once it was here they were able to put it to work fairly quickly.

Nicholas Dobson, Paradise Valley’s Fire Chief emphasizes not only the community’s, but also the firefighters contributions to achieving the goal of attaining the truck this year, after a decade of planning and saving.

“We have had continued great community support throughout our fundraising efforts,” Dobson stated, “our firefighters saw the need for this truck, and wanted to

give back to the community so this is how they did that.”

Twenty-seven percent of the funds raised to cover the cost of the truck came from the department, and half of that from the firefighters themselves, as they have been donating their firefighting wages back to the department to use towards

purchasing needed equipment. This money, in combination with funding from the County of Vermilion Rivers Protective Services, the Village of Paradise Valley, Farm Credit Canada (who provided funds for equipment for the truck) and local fundraising from the community, raised the funds needed.

In our November 23rd issue, we ran a photo of the old Coal Train in Vermilion asking for information or who is in the photo although we had one name; John Nolyk, it should be John Holyk. The Voice received a phone call about the photo with the name correction and that the photo was taken in 1915 and John Holyk is Nellie Charchun’s father.

With Christmas coming up, it’s nice to have a bit of Christmas bak ing d o ne.

Here is an easy bar to make for lovers of Eat More chocolate bars. I make it with salted peanuts for a sweet and salty flavour.

Peanuts have many health benefits.

They are a very good source of antioxidants. The mono-saturated fat in peanuts includes oleic acid, the kind found in olive oil. Monosaturated fat is heart protective by being associated with lowering bad cholesterol, while protecting good cholesterol. Peanuts are also a source of resveratrol. Reveratrol is the beneficial substance

found in red wine. In the nurses’ health study, which involved 86,000 women, it was found that there was a correlation between nut consumption and a reduced risk of cardio-vascular disease. Many of the nutrients found in peanuts have anticancer properties. Studies have shown peanuts to reduce the risk of colon cancer, gall stones, weight gain and Alzheimer’s.

Peanut butter is an excellent source of biotin, which is good for better blood sugar balance, lowering cholesterol and healthy hair and nails.

Chocolate is full of the beneficial antioxidants and nutrients that have caused heart doctors to advise their patients to eat dark chocolate. Studies have shown dark chocolate to be heart healthy by reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke. Choc-

A compound in chocolate called anandamide delivers feel good bliss, reducing depression, while also stimulating areas of the brain responsible for memory, a positive mood and higher thought processes.

Scientists at Harvard Medical School recommend drinking 2 cups of cocoa a day to help preserve memory and keep the brain healthy, so go ahead and enjoy your favourite chocolate. When selecting corn syrup, be sure to read the label that is does not contain the words “high fructose corn syrup”, as it is a form known to damage the liver. As you are making these bars, be sure not to overcook the syrup or you will end up with Eat More peanut brittle. These bars are easy to make, and are not overly

sweet. They are sure to be a hit this holiday season.

Eat More Bars 1 cup corn syrup 3/4 cup peanut butter 1 1/2 cup semi sweet chocolate chips 2 cups of shelled and chopped peanuts (salted or unsalted) Line a 9 x 9 pan with parchment paper or oiled wax paper and oil the sides. Chop the peanuts and have them measured out.

In a heavy bottomed pot bring the corn syrup to just beginning to boil on medium heat and then stir in the peanut butter and cook on medium heat for 2 minutes, stir in the chocolate chips, until melted. Stir in the peanuts. Pour and press the mixture into a pan. Chill in the refrigerator. Cut into bars or squares.

While looking through my various resources to find a story to write about for this week, I came along two words I knew but put into a context I didn’t know. It was auto camp, and initially I didn’t know what that was but with a bit of research I found it was something that was very popular in the 1920s and it was something that Vermilion even took part in.

In fact, auto camps were so popular in the

1920s that President Warren G. Hardin even did one in the summer of 1921, where he was joined by Henry Ford and Thomas Edison.

Auto camps, which essentially meant driving a car deep into the wilderness and then camping had begun in 1914 as people started to explore the continent. As the 1920s dawned and more and more people had vehicles, these camps became very popular.

In June of 1926, Vermilion would host an auto camp due to the urging of town council to have a site selected and to bring in tourists to the area. The camp was established and over the course of the spring and summer, 200 tourists passed through the camp and

visited Vermilion. The Edmonton Journal would report quote: “Very favourable comments both as to the camp and district were expressed on the register by very many of those who availed themselves of its advantages. In this connection there were placed at conspicuous points east and west, sign boards indicating distance and direction to Vermilion and location of auto camps.”

At the camp, the Board of Trade arranged to have a lecture on diversified farming by J.G. Haney, the superintendent of the International Harvester Company Demonstration farms.

As well, the Board of Trade produced 3,000 pamphlets that described the advantages and merits of the town and district.

About 1,500 of those were distributed to visitors through the auto camp.

As the 1930s began and money became tight, auto camps faded away and the cars were turned into Bennett Buggies as people tried to make ends meet.

The lives of farmers are about to get a lot easier. Over the next decade, many aspects of farming life will completely change as traditional methods are replaced with automated machines. From robots capable of picking fruit to drones that can map out the quality of a crop, the foundational identity of what it means to be a farmer will be shifting.

Agriculture Will Never Be The Same

It uses software very similar to facial recognition software to properly identify weeds and perfectly spray pesticides only when needed. This allows the farmers to use less than 10 per cent of the herbicides that would be used by a current generation sprayer.

Another impressive innovation that is making its way into the agricultural industry will come from drones. These quadcopters will be able to use their onboard cameras along with specialized lidar sensors to gather information about a crop’s health, size and even get an estimate on how many plants you can expect for harvest. Many of these new farming

machines rely heavily on the recent innovations in the artificial intelligence field. It is now possible to teach a computer how to recognize more complex things such as plants, animals and people.

Most readers will have heard of selfdriving cars, and how impactful they will be in other industries. However, one area that is not often explored is how self-driving technologies can be applied to regular combines, bailers and tractors. Once this is available it will greatly impact farmers’ lives, as the monotonous work of driving up and down a field for harvest can be offset from labourers to machines. Your farming vehicles will only require you to press a button and they will do the rest, working day and night to follow the path that you define for them. Imagine watching a fleet of intelligent

I was converted to the charms of good coffee while visiting Italy. Every day I’d indulge in a cappuccino—or two. Sure the cups were tiny, but they were deliciously packed with rich aroma. There was nothing better than to sit on a cobblestone lane amid the hustle and bustle of a busy weekday morning and sip the frothy beverage.

This pleasant memory is not shared by my husband. In vain he searched for a “decent” cup of java. By that he meant a 14-ounce, disposable container of drip coffee, stuffed into a cardboard tray and thrust into his outstretched hand through a small hole cut into the side of a building.

“Bah!” he’d say with disgust, watching as I sipped my caffè latte near the Roman Colosseum. “I want a real cup of coffee.”

While abroad, he was so desperate for coffee prepared his own way, he purchased a small Bialetti espresso maker. Then, he

pondered which variety of grounds to buy, finally accosting three elderly Italian women in a supermarket to ask their advice. While initially, they were wary of this strange babbling man, they warmed up as he smiled, performed exaggerated simulations of someone guzzling a hot drink, and expressed his utter helplessness. Happily chattering in Italian, they pointed to a brand of coffee they liked best.

This is a serious business for Tom and not to be trifled with. Several years ago he underwent an operation at the University Hospital in Edmonton. After two days of confinement, and miserable, watery coffee, he rose from his bed to peer out the window.

“Well, whadya know…” he said, his eyes narrowing in thought. Shortly thereafter, a man could be seen exiting the front doors

Livestock automation for example is still many years away, and these machines will likely create a new type of farmer. The next generation farmer will likely need more technical experience as learning how to use these machines and even fix them when they break will be imperative. The next era of agriculture will experience a major shift in operation as it begins to be made more automated. Some of these new technologies could begin to trickle into the consumer market in as little as a year from now.

Considering there are already this many new machines in the works only time will tell what the future will hold for agriculture.

Shirley Scott Honoured For Her Volunteer Work

On Thursday December 2, I had the privilege of watching the 2021 Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards Online Ceremony where nine outstanding Albertans were honoured for their volunteer contributions. One of our own, Shirley Scott from Kitscoty was one of those recipients. Shirley Scott exemplifies the spirit of a true volunteer. In 1982 when her sixteen-yearold daughter Audra was killed in a car accident Shirley found there was no support for

her family as they grieved. Shirley told a friend she remembers sitting in a field feeling lost and walking around the field alone.

Some people may have become bitter or sad for a long time but Shirley decided that no one should walk alone. Her vision was that all people should have support as they experience grief. In 1991 she got a group of like minded individuals together at a restaurant and started a conversation about grief.

It was the beginning of Walking Through Grief. For the past 30 years Shirley has volunteered for the organization. She facilitates and runs the group with a board.

She has brought the organization from its humble beginnings to a program that has expanded and provides grief suppor t groups to s e n i or s, p ar e nt s, special needs, infant loss, and adults. Shirley has worked one on one with adults and children through

the years. The most recent support group she initiated was for children experiencing grief due to their loss. Her daughter Audra had a passion for caring for children and at her death her siblings did not have the benefit of support. Feb 2, 2015 launched the beginning of Shirley’s dream of having Children Support Groups. They currently run for children in the area, and they have continued through the pandemic with some modifications. Walking Through Grief is in Vermilion, Lloydminster and Wainwright with outreach to surrounding communities.

Shirley provides resources and materials to any individuals or groups who ask and she has had requests from all over Alberta.

The organization is entirely run by volunteer facilitators and a volunteer board. Shirley has trained over two hundred volunteer facilitators over the past 30 years.

She believes it is important to develop the skills of volunteers so that the organization continues to grow beyond her. County Of Vermilion River Council Approves Community Enhancement Grants

At the November 9 Regular Council meeting, the County council passed the motions required to approve the Fall 2021 Community Enhancement Funding Grants. There is $20,000 allocated towards these grants, and two application deadlines in the year. No applications were submitted this past spring, so the full amount of money was available this fall for grants. The grants are divided into two categories, Programs and Events, and New Initiatives. Eight applications were received this fall, four in each category, and all eight were awarded the monetary amount they requested.

Programs and Events funding requests: • Clandonald Ag Society $1,000 towards offsetting expenses for the Clandonald Country Fair.

• Clandonald & District Rec Association $1,000 towards offsetting the expenses of the Clandonald Fall supper.

County Of Vermilion River Protective Services Update

The month of November was a slower month for the County of Vermilion River Protective Services.

According to their site, the County of Vermilion Protective services were called out to approximately 45 calls for service. The numbers totaled does not include calls received within the Town of Vermilion, Villages of Kitscoty, Marwayne and Paradise Valley. While fire calls were down in November, medical calls did jump back up.

It was reported that the County of Vermilion Protective Services received one structure, three wildland, and one vehicle fire calls in the month of November. As well, there was one gas-electrical hazmat, two smoke investigations, four alarms, nine motor vehicle collisions, one mutual aid requests-CVR, one regional assistance, eight public assistance and one fire investigations call for service, and 13 medical calls.

Despite their already busy schedules the County of Vermilion River Protective Services also finds time to do extensive training courses and community involvement events.

On November 20 and 21 County firefighters participated in a two day Advanced Vehicle Extrication Heavy Rescue course hosted by the Lloydminster Fire Department. Throughout the two day course participants received hands-on training with simulated heavy accidents including ones with transport trucks, fuel trucks and school buses on the first day. On day two of the course participants had the opportunity to build their skills from the prior day training while teams of firefighters were assigned complex scenarios based on actual previous experience of the course

Ron Moses Community Christmas Dinner

For 25 years our family has shared their Christmas dinner with the community. This was Ron’s dream back in the nineties, so for Christmas, 1996 we invited people to join us in the Legion hall for a free turkey meal.

Fifty people came and we have continued ever since.

Restaurants were closed and taxis didn’t run so we provided meals, rides if needed or deliveries to shut-ins. The day started with entertainment at noon with a meal following. We soon learnt that not everyone likes turkey so added ham, then meatballs and later a different wild meat (goose, wild boar, deer, moose, elk or bison) each year. Different individuals and groups provided baking, desserts, cabbage rolls, pyrogies or cooked turkeys. The most meals we served were 235 in 2015 with 177 in the hall as well as 58 deliverers to towns, some 40 miles away.

Vermilion is a very giving community, so menu consisted to whatever was offered like squash but always include turnips.

One couple looked forward to their Christmas dinner with turnips like the old days.

People wanted to be a part of the dinner so they would come to help and enjoyed the meal and fellowship. One family came one year to show the boys what an ‘’old fashioned Christmas ‘’ was like and brought a Christmas carrot pudding to cook for us. For Mark Your Calendar

3 years a group of young people (Katimavik) from across Canada who were in our community for the year came to help, be together and have a Christmas meal. There was a children’s table to keep the young ones busy coloring, doing puzzles or icing cookies during the entertainment hour. All left with a bag of candy. Many people entertained over the years, one man led it for 7 years, one widow showed up the year her husband passed away to play piano and stayed for 15 years. Another lady was faithful to play piano for our singing Christmas carols. Young musicians would come play their instruments or sing for us. A couple did puppets one year as well as many families came to entertain during this time. Some of the needs that were met over the 25 years were A BC. Man was traveling to Ontario when his car broke down and while it was being fixed, he went to work for an oil company. He hadn’t been paid or eaten in 2 days when he saw our poster in the hotel so he joined us.

He was so grateful for the meal, stayed to mop floors after.

Another lady whose husband passed away in May didn’t know how she would get through the holidays as their anniversary was the 24th and Christmas was the 25th.

She offered to wash dishes so she wouldn’t be alone, staying for another 8 years to help.

Another lady had a son die that year so

was grateful for the fellowship and dinner.

One man who attended for a few years met us walking on May 25th and reminded us that the best meal of the year was only 7 months away.

One friend wanted her family to come home for the holidays but wasn’t able to do the cooking so brought the family to our dinner.

Another family came because the husband had just had a hernia surgery and was unable to lift the turkey in and out of the oven so they brought a sweet potato dish to share with us.

In August of 2005, Ron passed away. I wasn’t sure about continuing as Ron had said this was the last supper. It was for him!

Members of the local Rotary club came to me and offered to help if I would organize it.

The answer was obvious as it was a chance to honor Ron and the community was willing to help to keep his dream alive. So we contin-

ued for 24 years. Then in 2020, because of the virus, a local caterer phoned to say she would do the cooking in her kitchen if we would do the organizing to make sure all on our list got a Cristmas dinner. We supplied the food, she did the cooking and with the help of 11 teams, we delivered 129 meals to people in Innisfree, Minburn, Mannville, Islay, Clandonald, Dewberry, Elk Point as well as Vermilion.

Thanks to Vermilion for your generous giving and all the volunteers over the years to keep Ron’s dream alive. Only GOD could have arranged to bless this many people.

We are so grateful to have been a part in this adventure.

The first was Common Sense Media, where you can find books, movies, and games reviews for children of a variety of ages. It talks about the content, the age level, and both the positive and negative aspects of each movie, book or game. You can also see what parents and children are saying about the movie, book or game. Parents can search movies, books, and games prior to using them with their child. The second was Common Sense Media YouTube Channel, where you will find videos relating to reviews about games, movies, and books. You can also find some parenting videos about how to talk to your child about technology use.

There are a variety of webinars and parent videos around questions about technology use, safety and conversations with your child.

Thank you to everyone for supporting our Virtual Book Fair. The proceeds of this fundraiser will go directly towards our Learning Commons for new books and author visits.

It will be exciting for students to see all the new books. As well, our AR Wall of Fame is looking great. Students who have reached their half year goal, get their picture on the Wall of Fame. All students who reach their year end goal prior to January 31, get the reward to order a new book for our Learning Commons.
