Lions Of Alberta Foundation Grants Students Scholarships

The Lions of Alberta Foundation has recently granted two students with scholarships. In order to qualify the students were required to demonstrate a personal commitment to make our world a better place in which to live. The students who were granted the scholarships were particularly determined to help their community through their volunteering.

Jared Gourley and Avery Atkinson were presented each with $1000 schol-

arships from the Lions of Alberta Foundation. Barry Clampitt a Lions Club member, met Jared to present the award in person. Although Avery was unable to attend in person to receive the award, she will receive hers either at a later date or by different means.

Scholarships are a great opportunity for students to alleviate some of the financial stress associated with going to post-secondary education. Barry Clampitt encouraged anyone looking to go to college or university to take the necessary steps to see if they are eligible for a scholarship award.

Meghan Ryan, a first year Bachelor of Science in Nursing Student at Keyano College is this year’s recipient of the Islay Health Centre Auxiliary Society bursary. This bursary, given annually to a local post-secondary student, is a very much appreciated award.

“I would like to thank the Auxiliary for awarding me this fantastic bursary that will assist me in furthering my education in Nursing,” stated Ryan.

Student’s must be enrolled in a health-related field of education, and have grown up in the Islay hospital’s former geographical boundaries.

Ryan, home for the November break, will finish her degree as a Registered Nurse. She has not determined if she will specialize in a particular field in nursing yet as she is still learning all the different opportunities that are available. Add any additional seasoning to taste. Stir the hamburger mixture into the pasta.

Will Lab-Grown Food Replace Agriculture?

For 10,000 years humans have been farming plants and anim al s for t heir food. Agriculture was in many ways the foundation of which societies were built.

However, with a growing population and an increasing demand for food production, we will soon run out of space. This is a problem because traditional agriculture takes up a lot of space. Approximately half of all habitable land is used for agriculture with only one percent used for urban areas.

That means 50 times the amount of space for buildings is being taken up by farmland.

Before heading out, the kids milled restlessly around the foyer as small shoes were tied, coats were zipped, and everyone was issued protective, blue rubber gloves. Then they received carefully enunciated instructions (that 85 percent of them missed since they were too absorbed in applying the gloves).

Once that was taken care of, we moved in a boisterous, energetic crowd to the door, with only one minor casualty. (You can’t get 20 kids out one exit without some sort of disaster). Amid wild cries

Lab-grown foods are one proposed replacement for the current farming methods. Lab-grown foods are built of all the same things that ‘regular’ foods are. A labgrown steak is still steak, it is real meat, not some plant-based alternative. However, when a steak is grown in the lab, it grows in a dish, without the cow attached to it. Scientists are able to achieve this by collecting a very small amount of cells from a cow. They can then provide these cells with the proper nutrients and the environment they need to survive and grow. After a few weeks of care, the dish that once contained only a few microbes from a cow will now hold a full

steak ready for human consumption.

The options for lab-grown meals are not limited to meats. In fact, a commercial lab on the outskirts of Helsinki (Finland), was able to create a rich flour with a yellow colour. They did this by genetically modifying bacteria to produce the components that make-up flour instead of its usual byproducts. Although this flour is not yet licensed for sale, they have already had some people taste test it. According to those who tried this experimental flour in a pancake recipe, it tasted just like regular pancakes.

Many people when asked if they would try lab-grown food will often say “no”, or “that sounds disgusting”. And I can’t say I blame them, there is something that feels

Dear Editor “Who wrote the Alberta Government’s new curriculum?” asks a recent ad from the ATA. I have been adamant that teachers did not write the 2021 K-6 draft curriculum. It is an inadequate, cobbled-together disaster. If teachers had been collaboratively involved, there would be clearly communicated outcomes and engaging sequences of learning where each new skill builds on the ones before. There would be recognition that young children move from concrete to abstract thinking and learn new things by connecting to their own experiences and prior knowledge. There would be recognition of how much can be “covered” in the instructional minutes for each subject. The 2021 draft curriculum fails on all these counts.

in the States. That would explain the references to “reservations” instead of “reserves,” the reference to “Canadian units of measurement” and the Social Studies task where students originally were told to take out a map of Alberta and calculate the distance from Regina to Duck Lake (both in Saskatchewan).

When the UCP came to power, they tore up the memorandum of understanding with the ATA that had teachers working collaboratively with Alberta Education to create curriculum.

Yet the UCP continues to maintain that teachers were involved in the “development” of the curriculum during the 7 months (7 months!!

Source: Alberta Education) that it took to completely rewrite every subject in grades K-6. What might that teacher involvement have looked like?

During a Have Your Say session, when

I asked about teacher input, the presenter referenced 102 selected teachers, labelled a “working group,” who got two days (minus time lost to technical difficulties) on Zoom to give (easily ignored) feedback after the draft was completed. When I asked who wrote the curriculum, I was referred to a web page that said nothing except that the much-publicized, seriously under-qualified “advisors” did not write the curriculum.

Perhaps some of the draft curriculum was written by teachers seconded to Alberta Education? An anonymous post in the Facebook group Albertans Reject Curriculum Draft described a seconded teacher working in isolation from home and being told “Write this. Like this.” Little input. No collaboration.

That teacher was stressing about returning to school in the fall and having to explain his/her

part in the failed curriculum.

Perhaps former teachers, now permanent staff at Alberta Education, were involved in writing the draft curriculum? Wally Bearhead tweeted, “It seems like there’s a lot of stress leaves, retirements, and people leaving for better places. I was told about a lot of situations where people working there cried over some of the stuff being put into the curriculum because they knew it wasn’t for kids.” New job postings for important positions do not require any education background at all. How many teachers are left in Alberta Education?

Teachers and curriculum experts were not involved in any meaningful way in the “development” of the failed draft curriculum. So who wrote this inadequate, cobbled-together disaster?

County Of Vermilion River Protective Services Update

The month of October was a slower month for the County of Vermilion River Protective Services, which was welcomed relief for the crews who had a busy summer season.

According to their site the County of Vermilion Protective services were called out to approximately 60 calls for service.

The numbers totalled does not include calls received within the Town of Vermilion, Villages of Kitscoty, Marwayne and Paradise Valley. It was said that medical calls were the biggest decline with only six calls

in October compared to the 22 medical calls in September. It was also noted that Alarm calls were up probably due to the cooler weather.

It was reported that the County of Vermilion Protective Services received two structure, six wildland, and three vehicle fire calls in the month of October. As well there were two gas-electrical hazmat, three smoke investigation, eight alarm, six motor vehicle collisions, one rescue, seven mutual aid requests- CVR, one regional assistance, 12 public assistance and three fire investigations call for service.

Thus far in November it also appears to

be a slower month with a outside fire call on brance Day ceremonies across the County.
