Halloween is once again upon us this Sunday, and as usual, there are many tips and tricks out there to help keep kids (and parents) safe while trick or treating. While COVID-19 has resulted in new ways to interact with kids when they come to the door, it hasn’t changed some of the traditional safety measures that families and candy givers have been using for decades to keep Halloween fun and memorable.

The first tip; Ensure that your children are dressed appropriately for the weather (this is Alberta, you never know what season could arrive while you are out trick or treating), look for costumes that can have layers underneath, or that come with padding.

Health Canada has some tips that have

proven effective through the years: Costumes with flowing skirts, capes or baggy sleeves, costumes that are oversized, and costume accessories such as beards, wigs, wings and tails, can all be hazardous around candles or other ignition sources.

Choose costumes and accessories that are less likely to catch on fire, such as those made of nylon or heavyweight polyester.

Some costumes may be labelled flameresistant, but remember, flame-resistant does not mean fire-proof.

Pick brightly coloured costumes that can be clearly seen by motorists. Add reflective tape to the costume to increase visibility.

Use make-up or face paint instead of masks - improperly fitted masks can inter-

fere with your child's vision or breathing.

Before using face paint or make-up, do a patch test to see if your child is sensitive or allergic to something in the cosmetic.

Even products labelled as “hypoallergenic” can still cause allergic reactions.

If you do choose a mask, make sure it fits properly and allows them to see and breathe easily.

Do not use contact lenses that change eye colour or create special effects because they can cause injury to a child's eyes.

Avoid costumes that are too big or have long dangling pieces that children can trip over. Ensure that toy weapons and similar accessories are made of soft or flexible material. Hard or rigid costume accessories can cause accidents.

It is important to make your home safe for little ghouls and goblins.

Remove objects around the outside of your house that could cause children to trip or fall. Turn on your outdoor lights to increase visibility and let trick-or-treaters know they can visit.

Keep your children safe by teaching them to stay visible and to be aware of their surroundings. Go trick or treating with your children each year until they are old enough to go with a friend.

Give each child a flashlight to carry, to make them more visible to motorists and others. Tell your children to stay in well-lit areas and only visit homes that have their outside lights turned on. Make sure they know never to go inside homes or cars.

Always examine the treats and toys that are brought home before giving them to your children.

Tell your children not to eat any treats until you have looked them over.

Be careful when giving children any treats that could be potential choking hazards such as chewy candies, peanuts and hard candies.

Check toys or novelty items for small parts and do not let children under three years of age play with them.

With COVID-19 around, new innovative ways to hand out treats have had to be devised. The Alberta Government has provided some safe ideas to help people enjoy the day.

Don't go trick-ortreating if feeling ill, even if symptoms are minor.

Choose costumes that allow a non September 29, 1948 – October 31, 2015 medical mask to be worn underneath.

Make sure you can see and breathe comfortably.

Trick-or-treat with your household. If you run into friends or family, stay 2 metres apart.

Wash or sanitize hands frequently, and before eating or handling candy.

Don't hand out candy if you are feeling ill or isolating.

Ask trick-or-treaters to knock or call out instead of ringing the doorbell. Don't invite trick-or-treaters indoors.

Use tongs to hand out pre-packaged candy or consider an alternative way.

Find creative ways to maintain distance from trick-or-treaters: Hand out treats from your driveway or front lawn, if weather permits.

Set up a table or desk to help keep yourself distanced.

Space treats out on a table or blanket.

Don't leave out self-serve bowls of bulk candy.

Build a candy slide, candy catapult or other fun, non-touch delivery methods.

If you plan to hold a gathering for Halloween, review current gathering restrictions before participating in Halloween-themed gatherings or parties.

Stay home if feeling ill, even if symptoms are mild. Limit close contact with people outside your household. The smaller the group the better.

Host your party outdoors, if weather permits. Maximum of 20 people (vaccinated or unvaccinated) with 2 metres between households.

Indoor gatherings are limited to 10 fully vaccinated people from 2 households you interact with regularly (yours and one other). Children too young to be vaccinated don’t count towards total.

Tips for all gatherings: Hold your party in a space where people can spread out and keep their distance from one another.

Choose games and activities that don't use shared items and allow people to stay 2 metres apart.

Provide hand sanitizer or a place for your guests to wash their hands with soap.

Municipal Election Brings New Faces To Councils

Last week’s municipal election brought some new faces to the Council Chambers for both the Town of Vermilion and the County of Vermilion River. The Voice was able to catch up with some of the candidates throughout the County, all of whom were grateful to be chosen to serve their constituents for the next four years.

In the County race, George Kuneff managed to unseat Lonnie Wolgien in Division 4. Incumbent Jason Stelmaschuck in Division 5 was successful in maintaining his seat, “I’d like to thank our former Reeve Lonnie Wolgien for his dedication to serving the County, I am looking forward to working with our newly elected Councillors as well as the other Council members who were re-elected through the voting process or Acclamation. Congratulations to our Deputy Reeve, Clint Murray, who will continue his role to lead and a big congratulations to our newly elected Reeve, Stacey Hrychuk. Her transparent and common sense approach to collaborating with all stakeholders within the region will lead us forward to new success and achievements. Most importantly I am humbled and honoured of the strong mandate provided to me in Division 5 and will do my absolute best to serve my Community and Lead the CVR to the best of my ability. Stanley M. Kaziechko passed away on October 21, 2021 in Vermilion at the age of 96 years.

He will be lovingly remembered by his children Shirley Brown, Allen (Joan) Kaziechko, Bev (Jan) Vinslovas, Mike Kaziechko, and Connie (Eric Wagner) Kaziechko; grandchildren Murray (Danielle) Brown, Renee (Harm) Tjardes, Ryan Wilson, Ken “Bud” (Holly) Kaziechko, Kyle (Rhonda) Kaziechko, Dean (Patricia) Kaziechko, Troy Robinson, Tara (Marvin) Garnier, and Reid Wagner; as well as numerous great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was predeceased by his wife Pauline Kaziechko; child Kenneth Kaziechko; grandson Blake Wagner; parents Michael & Anna Kazieczko; and sisters Kassie (John) Badach and Jean (Roney) Bodurka.

A private family graveside service will be taking place.

A celebration of life will also take place in the spring of 2022.

Even though we have had a bit of frost, we recently harvested all of our carrots from the garden. A little light frost can make carrots sweeter. While there are several ways to keep your carrots over winter, one of my favourite methods is to wash them, let them dry, and then bag them in plastic bags, which have been perforated with holes and stored in refrigeration. I learned a great tip many years ago to wash a lot of carrots fast from a seasoned older farm wife. She told me to put them in the washing machine on the shortest cycle. I put about 3 plastic grocery bags full of carrots in at a time (avoiding the really large oversized ones) , and them lay the washed

carrots on clean tea towels for about half an hour and then bag they in plastic freezer bags with a square of paper towel placed inside, and then twist tie them shut. I poke holes in the bags with a fork, and store them in a refrigerator. We will have carrots until January or February.

You do have to check the bags every 3 weeks or so, in case there is a bad one so you can remove it from the bag.

I love home grown carrots, as I know that they have not been chemically sprayed. Carrots have several health benefits including being an excellent source of vitamin A, with 1/2 cup providing 210 percent of our daily need. Nutrients naturally found in carrots also have been found to reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, lung and colon cancer.

Carrots are protective of vision, our liver and brain. An interesting study has also

discovered that carrots have anti-inflammatory effects that have been found to be significant when compared to asprin and Ibuprofin. While many vegetables are best eaten raw, carrots are one food that benefits you to cook. If you are buying your carrots at the store, be aware that unfortunately “baby carrots” are processed in a chlorine bath; making them a less healthy choice that regular bagged carrots, so always be sure to wash the baby carrots well. The cinnamon and whole grain flour in this recipe help to control blood sugar, ginger boosts metabolism, and raisins have fibre and antioxidants. Here is a great muffin to enjoy at breakfast, or on the go.

Carrot and Raisin Muffins 1 cup canola oil 3 eggs 1/2 cup apple sauce or 1 apple grated

3/4 cup sugar 2 cups flour, you can use whole wheat, whole barley, all purpose or a mixture 1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon baking powder 2 teaspoons cinnamon 1 teaspoon ginger 1/4 teaspoon cloves 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 3 cups grated raw carrots 1/2 cup raisins Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Beat the eggs until frothy; slowly add the oil, beating it into the eggs. Add the apple sauce and stir well. Add all the remaining ingredients and then blend well. Spoon the batter into 12 paper lined muffin tins and bake @ 375 degrees for 20 - 22 minutes or until done. You can eat them as is or frost the muffins with cream cheese icing when cooled.

Mental Health: A Priority Issue

One of the most important elements of formal education from a development standpoint is the opportunity to socialize in a friendly and open environment. For many school-aged children, the schoolyard is their main source of building relationships with peers. Group projects. Middle-school plays. Lunchtime in the cafeteria.

And yet, as with many of our day-to-day routines, the pandemic has altered the structure through which children get to see and interact with one another. This year, to mark National School Safety Week, the Canada Safety Council is calling attention to the mental health crisis that looms because of fewer opportunities to socialize.

It’s through these moments of interaction with classmates and friends that

students learn to trust, cooperate with, and support one another. But with the pandemic still casting its shadow over our lives, these students have faced school closures, re-openings, distance learning, more isolation in the classroom, and an increased reliance on social media to communicate — whether that’s by actively participating in conversations or passively consuming content and merely being aware of their friends’ lives.

“Isolation and a lack of safe social connections are issues that have only been exacerbated by the pandemic,” said Gareth Jones, President and CEO of the Canada Safety Council. “Between the importance of these issues and a growing recognition that social media channels often exist to promote engagement over mental health, it’s all the more important that we check in with children more

frequently and help them to connect with friends and the people most important to them.”

School-aged children, much like the population at large, must stay connected with the world around them. Especially at such a seminal age, it’s vital that these social skills continue to be developed. That’s why, even when it’s not in a student’s nature to reach out to a friend and converse, we must encourage them to do so.

Children need safe and supportive figures in their lives. Even through children are extremely resilient, it’s easy to forget at times that there are limits to that resiliency.

Encourage your children to reach out to friends, have conversations and share experiences in limited-risk environments while still safely distancing and, where appropriate, wearing masks. Even conver-

sations held over text or on the phone can be more effective at maintaining one’s mental wellbeing than scrolling through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or TikTok. Loneliness is but a short step away from isolation and it can bring about a whole host of mental health issues including depression, anxiety and eating disorders. Stress about not feeling connected and being socially isolated can lead to mood swings, extreme variations in sleep patterns and more.

As adults, staying connected with children and maintain an open channel of communication can make all the difference. While social restrictions are now lifting, we are not yet through the pandemic.

At this time, it is important to help each other along where we can. When it comes to children, let’s remain connected, understanding, and supportive.

The Depression Ends In Vermilion

T he 19 3 0 s were a tough time for the residents of Vermilion. While they had good times, such as fairs and big events to raise spirits, the poor crops, poor prices and more made it tough for many people.

It could be hard to say exactly when The Great Depression ended for Vermilion, but I think it came on Dec. 26, 1939 when the community got a great Christmas present.

It was on that day that it was announced that the Franco Company had signed a contract to start a new project in the spring at Vermilion, injecting $100,000 into the community. That was no small amount back then, amounting to nearly $2 million today.

Using the New Discover Well located about 20 kilometres southeast of Vermilion, the pipe would run into town and supply businesses and households with natural gas, something many did without during The Great Depression.

The cost of putting the line into Vermilion brought with it several jobs for residents of the area. It was also announced that the company would also start a vigorous drilling program looking for new oil.

This would bring in even more employment for residents of the area. The president of the company would say, quote: “We are confident that our program for the development of both gas and oil in this vicinity will have striking advantages to the town.”

The president of the company also stated that the reason to ship in gas from the well was because the principal user of the gas would be the electric light and

power plant in Vermilion.

The well had a gas flow of about 4.2 million cubic feet with a rock pressure of 540 pounds per square inch, which showed that the Vermilion area was a proven area for drilling.

For Vermilion, it was a sign The Great Depression was over, but also that the modern world was coming to the community with ample electricity and natural gas for everyone in town.

Halloween Hullabaloo. For many generations Canadian children have eagerly anticipated October 31st and all the excitement it entails. For kids, the fun of Halloween can’t be beat and we grownups enjoy the carefree, playful aspect of it too. I for one, have many fond memories of Halloweens past.

When kids live in the country, such as I did, the job of getting from house to house requires a parent and a vehicle. There’s a lot to be said for knowing the folks you visit on Halloween night, and in sharing special memories with family, friends and neighbours.

I remember my brother and me making the seven mile trek to a neighbour’s farm each year. Our parents waited in the truck as we rustled noisily up the walk in plastic costumes, our hot breath escaping through ill-fitting masks. (Sort of like Darth

Vader during his epic battle against ObiWan Kenobi.) Other times we tripped over bedsheets that trailed along behind us as we struggled to see out of hastily cut eye holes.

One year my massive sheet/costume was held in place with dad’s Western belt.

Honestly! Would any self-respecting ghost be caught dead (okay, bad example) cinching itself together with a brown leather strap and the head of a Charolais bull?

But I digress. The lady of this house always baked up the same delicacy; oatmeal cookies sandwiched together with date filling and decorated with orange icing to resemble pumpkins. I hate date filling. Nevertheless, the warm homey atmosphere flooding out to greet us at the door was wonderful, and we knew she had made them especially for us and other neighbour kids. I cherish those memories.

Jumping ahead a few decades, I can tell you I always dress up in some outlandish getup for my job as school EA. Two years ago I donned a witches’ garb (which you

may or may not think appropriate depending on whether or not you’re my ex-husband).

I had worn the flowing black robes and large peaked hat all day and saw no reason to remove them as I drove kids home in the bus after school. Exiting town, we eventually lumbered up to speed. Nothing is ever done too quickly in a bus. After attaining the modest speed of 75k, we began advancing upon an old half-ton truck meandering along the road in front of us. An elderly man slouched behind the wheel, one arm slung out the window as he trundled through the countryside in no particular hurry.

While I am, for the most part, a patient person, I couldn’t follow this fellow at the turtle pace of 30k for long. Taking a moment to secure my trusty headpiece, and ensure the road ahead was clear, I accelerated and pulled out to pass. As we drew nigh, the man glanced at me through the long windows of the school bus door.

First, his face registered bored indifference and then, after an exaggerated double take, shock and alarm. I turned, and nodded

courteously as we motored briskly past in a cloud of dust, but slack jawed, eyes bulging, the man gaped out the window in response.

His eyes flitted to the back of the bus looking, no doubt, for the innocent children who were riding helplessly off to their doom. I’s sure he was unaware it was Halloween.

What a hair-raising tale he’d later tell.

“I was in town for cultivator shovels today Mabel, and you’ll never believe what I saw.

A WITCH! I tell you, it was an honest to goodness witch, with the hat and everything. And get this—she was driving a school bus—full of little kids!”

Across our land children will once again enjoy this thrilling day. Kids know a good thing when they see it. A million sticky fingers can’t be wrong. Happy Halloween.

Enhanced COVID-19 Protection For Continuing Care

With COVID cases slowly declining in Alberta, and vaccines preventing fewer outbreaks in continuing care facilities some of the most vulnerable Alberta citizens are still experiencing severe outcomes including hospitalizations and death. On October 19 Premier Jason Kenney, along with Chief Medical Officer Dr. Deena Hinshaw and Minister of Health Jason Copping implemented further temporary health measures for continuing care facilities in an attempt to help protect those vulnerable Albertans.

Effective Oct. 25, masking will be required for visitors at continuing care

facilities at all times, including while in residents rooms. However, residents are not required to be masked at this time. The only exception to the mandatory masking measure will be in cases where there are communication challenges with residents who may be hard of hearing or have dementia, and any exception will be determined by the facility staff.

Residents will be required to quarantine after being admitted to the facility or returning from a hospital stay which was longer than 24 hours until they test negative for COVID-19. A PCR test must be used, with testing conducted by Alberta Health Services.

aging unvaccinated family and friends to not visit residents in person at this time, and facility operators are also able to implement additional rules, such as requiring visitors to show proof of vaccination or undergo rapid testing, as appropriate.

Premier Kenney says that protecting vulnerable Albertans is always their top priority. “ Even with remarkably ef fective vaccines, residents in these facilities remain at risk, which is why we are increasing the protection around them. We will continue doing whatever it takes to protect vulnerable Albertans and slow the spread of COVID-19,” commented Kenney.

on to say that by protecting continuing care facilities they are protecting the health-care system and all of our communities.

“These measures will make residents safer while still supporting their quality of life during this difficult time. ,” stated Copping.

Hinshaw also commented that the changes are necessary and that they will closely monitor the spread of COVID-19 in the province.

“We continue to balance the need to protect residents and staff from COVID19 with ensuring that these residents enjoy a meaningful quality of life. We will continue watching closely and adapt these measures as needed in the months ahead,” added Hinshaw.

Happenings In The Town Of Vermilion

Where did the Lily bed go? The Lily bed located on the tourist information grounds on Highway 41 was moved to a better location near the Heritage Park and Seniors Centre. This location is more visible and easier to look after. In July the lilies were marked to the type of Lily and colour. In October a small group of dedicated people and former members of the Vermilion and Area Horticultural Society, Alice Stafinski, Lil Eyben, Albertha van Wageningen, Sylvia Petreau, and Joyce and Rex Cunningham took on this project. After the digging process they were sorted

and the best ones relocated to the new location by the Heritage Park. The Town moved the large rock with the plaque – the plaque reads ‘For excellence in Lily breeding Fred Fellner and Alex Burnett – July 2003.’ We the Vermilion and Area Horticultural Society were honoured to have Fred Fellner and Alex Burnett in our community. Fred’s family farm is northwest of Vermilion and Alex Burnett’s property was south of Vermilion. Fred Fellner dedicated his life developing and improving Asiatic Lilies due to their sheer beauty. At one time Fred grew 10,000 Lily seedlings annually, from his select Lilies he searched for beautiful trouble free Lilies that aver-

age gardeners could easily grow.

Alex Burnett learned from Fred Fellner and started his own cross-breeding program. Both received several awards from the ‘North American Lily Society’ and the ‘Alberta Lily Society.’ From the

Alberta Horticultural Association Fred received the centennial gold medal.

Fred has Lilies registered at the ‘Royal Hor ticultural Society’ in England.

Hybridizing is a long term process, it’s an art and you need patience.

Vermilion 4-H Sheep Club Looks Forward To Starting Another Year!

The Vermilion 4-H Sheep Club is looking forward to our first meeting of the year this coming Friday, October 29. We had a very successful year last year, with 14 members showing their projects at our Achievement Day this summer. We held meetings and workshops each month, and only had to have a few on-line Zoom meetings last year. We were able to finish our year off strong with lots of fun and informative in-person workshops where we all learned more about sheep husbandry and showing. A big par t of 4 - H is volunteering, and our members also had fun working together as volun-

teers to prepare for the Heavy Horse Show.

For our projects, members enjoyed preparing and showing seven different types of 4-H Sheep & Goat Projects! It was awesome to be able to h ave a n o r m a l A c h i e ve m e n t D ay ag a i n a n d d i s p l ay a l l o f o u r h ar d w o r k t o t h e c o m m u n i t y. O u r s a l e was a tremendous success and we sincerely THANK all of our buyers and community members for generously supporting our 4-H members. Generosity was further extended with four 4-H market lambs being purchased for a combined value of $3,320 and then donated to the FOODBANK by Rock Solid Nitrogen Services Ltd. and

Southview Trucking Ltd. The cost of meat processing was then donated

by Vermilion Packers (2 lambs); Brett and Jessica Flanders family (1 lamb); and Shelly ’s Window Coverings (1 lamb). Delicious lamb meat was very much appreciated by the Foodbank!

Being a 4-H Sheep Club member is a lot of fun and we would love to invite any new families that are interested to join our club. Our club just purchased some NEW equipment including a digital sheep scale and a trimming chute to assist all new and existing members in our club. Only basic facilities are needed to raise a 4-H lamb -- a small pen and minimal supplies! And lambs have a short feeding period of only 10

weeks, starting after weigh day in May and finishing at Achievement Day at the end of July. This is all the time you need to halter break and feed a lamb, all when the weather is great to be working outside with your lamb.

Our organizational meeting will be held on Friday, October 29 at 7:30 p.m. at the Ag Societ y Boardroom. This kicks off our full 4-H year of FUN and EDUCATIONAL activities. New families and anyone interested are ver y welcome to come and explore our amazing club. Cleaver Members can start 4-H at 6 years of age and Junior Members start at 9 years of age.

A Very Brief History Of The County of Vermilion River

L i ke m a ny d i s tr i c t s i n t h e pr ovince, the County of Vermilion River came together through the growth of multiple Local Improvement Districts as the province's population grew in the early part of the 20th century. For many r ural areas, s c ho ol d istr i c ts we r e c r e ate d , s o m e b e fo r e 19 0 5, and municipal governing bodies we r e e s t a b l i s h e d b a s e d o n t h o s e divisions. In 1912, in the area that would become the County, ten Local Improvement Districts were created to govern the area. By 1913, these had been converted into six municipalities with nine townships each.

In 1943, the Municipal District of Vermilion No. 450 was created. This district consisted of the six municipalities formed in 1913, as well as a substantial stretch of land nor th of

the North Saskatchewan River. This g e o gr a p hi c al area in c lu d e d tow n ships 53, 54 and 55 and ranges 1, 2 and 3 west of the 4th meridian, which established the count y borders as we k n ow t h e m to d ay. T h e d i s t r i c t became #71 in 1945, and the county office was located in Vermilion until 1953, when it moved to Kitscoty.

I n 19 6 3 , t h e c o u n c i l o f s e v e n m e m b e r s a p p l i e d t o t h e p r ov i n c e to become a County. By Januar y of 19 6 4, t h e M.D. of Ver m ili o n R i ver No. 71 and the Board of Vermilion School Division No. 25 became The Count y of Ver milion River N o. 24.

The goal of this government creation was to bring the educational body and municipal functions under one governing council. Presently, a council of seven councillors who ser ve the residents of the county in seven divisions for a four year term sit in

the council of fice in Kitscot y. Four boards in Wainwright. All are elected school trustees for the t wo school i n M u n i c i p a l e l e c t i o n s eve r y fo u r divisions in the county sit with their years.

We will be assembling at the Cenotaph at 10:45 a.m. Ceremony to start at 10:55 a.m.

Please remember we must practice social distancing during the ceremony and follow all AHS guidelines.

We will only be placing the Federal Government, Provincial Government, Town of Vermilion and the Vermilion Legion Branch #11 Wreaths at the Cenotaph ceremony.

There will be short program at the Cenotaph to conclude the Ceremony Unfortunately, we will not be able to host a lunch at the Legion Branch this year.

New Myrnam Students Present Encouraging Artwork

On October 1, students and staff at New Myrnam School celebrated Orange Shirt Day. To honour the day, Cliff Cardinal, St. Paul Education’s Cultural Advisor, visited the school and shared a presentation with the students on his own experiences and the impacts of residential schools. Following the presentations, students were invited to hang a ribbon and/or a message of encouragement and support on the trees in front of the school.

Miss Hildebrandt, Mennonite Liaison at New Myrnam School, said she and her German classes wanted to show that they as a class care for the Indigenous Peoples and that what happened to them was not right. Miss Hildebrandt’s German classes at the time were learning about

geese and how they support each other throughout their lives and during their travels.

“In class, we had been learning about geese and all the different things we can learn from them, for example, they stick together as a flock, and together they are stronger. If one falls out of formation and they are sick or hurt that goose is never left alone, one goose is always by its side until it is better or until it dies. Geese always honk to encourage each other and encourage the one in front of them to keep going and that is what we had been learning about in class so we decided we would do something in regards to that and also related to Orange Shirt Day,” commented Miss Hildebrandt.

The children in the class used chalk pastels to write encouraging messages

and colour the geese artwork which they presented to Cardinal after the presentation on Orange Shirt Day. They each also brought an item from home such as banana bread, or carrots or potatoes etc. which was placed in a basket that was

also presented to Cardinal on behalf of the students and their families.

“The Children were excited to present the artwork with the encouraging messages as well as the basket,” Miss Hildebrandt shared.

Norah’s Logo – National Day For Truth and Reconciliation – September 30

September 30th, 2021 marked the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Buffalo Trail Public Schools began planning for Orange Shirt Day (previously the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation was known as this) in the spring of 2021. BTPS and the Diversity, Equity and Human Rights Committee facilitated a division-wide Orange Shirt Day logo contest to coincide with discussions in the classrooms about the legacy of residential schools and the importance of knowing Canada’s history. The winner of our Orange Shirt Day Logo contest was Norah Melnyk, a grade 8 student from Delnorte-Innisfree.

Norah, now a grade 9 student, spoke to other students that day about the symbolism behind her logo. The true meaning of the symbols and colours are described by Norah below. Here is her speech to our students. We share this as she was amazingly brave to speak to other students across BTPS and shared a very impactful message.

The Shadow of a Child - by Norah Melnyk Hello, good day everybody.

First of all, I’d like to thank Katrin Heim from BTPS for presenting this amazing opportunity to me. I am so b eyo n d h o n o u r e d to b e s p e a k i n g today, and to be a part of something

so important with all of these extraordinary people.

I am so touched by all the responses I ’ve b e e n re c e i v i n g over t h e p a s t months from viewers of my piece. It is a tremendous honour, and very important to me as an artist that my piece evoked real emotion in many people’s hearts, especially about such an emotional and troubling topic in Canada’s history.

I cannot describe the amount of sympathy, respect, and pain I feel for residential school survivors, and the hundreds of Indigenous Canadian children buried in unmarked graves on former residential school grounds across Canada.

Another thanks to BTPS for choosing my logo to be on the orange shirts of our school district this year. Having my art represent such an important day this year is something that I will keep close to my heart for the rest of my life.

I was invited today to speak a bit about the symbolism behind my logo, and what led to its creation.

Last Spring, about a week after the reports of the 215 Indigenous children found buried at the Kamloops residential school surfaced, me and my classmates who were interested, were asked to create and submit Orange Shirt Day logos early for Orange Shirt Day in the coming fall in light of the discovery of the “missing” children.

As I am never one to pass up an artistic opportunity, I began deliberating ideas for my logo. Being unfamiliar with creating logos, I researched already existing logos that had been on orange shirts in the past, and found that they almost all included the words “EVERY CHILD MATTERS”. I researched the phrase, and I began building my logo

around those three words.

The two feathers forming the “A” in the word “MATTERS”, is meant to be a symbol generally reflecting Indigenous culture in a way that many people, including those who aren’t too familiar with the culture are able to recognize as such. I thought that the feathers were a perfect compositional element that ended up conveying my message perfectly, which leads me to my next element: The shadow reflecting from the feathers is obviously that of an Indigenous child, which the feathers show, as well as emphasize the importance of their culture to them as a person. Although it is only one shadow, of one child, it is meant to symbolize all the residential school survivors, and the hundreds of deceased children who sadly never made it home.

When I first heard of the discovery of the 215 children in Kamloops, I was absolutely speechless. I had an overwhelming amount of sympathy for these children, their families, and the survivors who grieved when they heard the news. I was in a state of horror and disbelief for the next few days, silently thinking about this atrocity.

When we were assigned this project, all I had on my mind was the 215 children, and I built my logo with the focus solely on them and memoriam for them. The reason I decided to depict an Indigenous child as a shadow rather than the child themselves, is because it is meant to symbolize children who died in residential schools. A shadow, because they are now no more than a memory, to grieve and to respect and to remember.

After my logo was chosen, I was contacted by Mr. Kevin John of the They Build Bridges Association to organize a meeting between us to discuss my logo, and his interest in using my logo and adding his association’s logo as well. As we were discussing the symbolism behind the logo, he talked about how it affected him emotionally, and he explained to me what meaning he found in the shadow of the child. In the shadow, Mr. John saw the impact residential schools left on survivor’s lives. To him, it symbolized how survivors are now a shadow of who they were before their time at residential schools. Before being stripped of most, to all of their culture and identity. He brought another very important meaning to my logo, and made it equally about survivors and non-survivors. I thank him for further opening my mind to new perspectives, even in the art that I created myself, and for taking the time to speak with me that day.

I’m ver y proud to be wearing this shirt that is so much more than a piece of orange cotton, and with my own art displayed on the front. I am so grateful that I was able to be a part of this, the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, it means so much to me and my family that I was granted this opportunity. Thank you all so much for being here and for taking the time to listen to me speak, thank you for inviting me today, and thank you for putting time into this extremely important cause.

Have a wonderful Truth and Reconciliation day, and I hope that you take part in commemoration of all the lives affected and taken by the residential school system. Thank you.

As October nears its end, St. Jerome’s staff and students have kicked things into high gear! Our Book Fair wrapped up this week. Students enjoyed shopping during their library periods and many showed their support on Family Night as well. Thank you to Mrs. Jackson & Mrs. Belich for all of their hard work. And a special thanks to all who supported it, the proceeds go towards purchasing new books for our school library! Our Grade 12 students are selling Mom’s Pantry as a Grad Fundraiser. Our Awards night celebration for high school students had to be postponed again this year due to COVID. In lieu of the awards evening celebration, Mr. Chase and Mr. Whelan visited the classrooms of students in grades 10-12 to recognize these students and all of their achievements.

Father Joy came for another round of classroom visits to our school. The students in Ms. Svenungard’s Grade 1 class loved learning all about his name, there are a lot of letters in it! Also, in Grade 1 we are learning about the days of the week. Father Joy told us all about why Sunday is such an important day of the week, to renew and reflect

on our relationship with God. Father Joy also visited Miss Hebert’s Grade 4 class as well. There he answered their questions, such as “Which came first, dinosaurs or Adam and Eve?”, and discussed the Seven Sacraments of our Catholic Faith. On October 15, all of our Grade 4 students received their Bibles at a special Bible ceremony at the Church. Students will use these Bibles as they continue on their personal faith journey over the next few years.

St. Jerome’s students have been appreciating the chance to take swimming lessons at the Lakeland College as part of their physical education. Many children have missed out on opportunities to learn water safety over the past couple of years

with COVID causing many pool closures.

We are very blessed to have such talented swim instructors working with our kids, thank you so much Jackie Good and Carmen Haslehurst! Last week, it was Mrs. Schmidt’s Grade 2’s classes turn to swim!

There were smiles and splashes all around!

Lastly, we’d like to thank St. Saviours Anglican Church for donating the proceeds from their garage sale to our Hot Lunch Program. In addition, Dr. Moneo at Vermilion Eye Centre also made a generous donation to our Hot Lunch program. Helping fuel our students to learn at their best is something that we all appreciate!

Three Detachments Respond To A Fire At Tank Farm

RCMP from Two Hills, Elk Point and Vermilion Detachments in conjunction with Emergency Services Personnel and paramedics from several regional fire d epar tments res p ond ed to an industrial explosion and fire at a crude oil tank farm Saturday afternoon north of highway 640 in the County of Two Hills.

The fire was contained to the tank farm and there was no report of casualties. The highway was blocked and c losed for a por tion of the day on Satur d ay, to let emerg en cy c rews access the site and to prevent further incidents due to poor visibility caused by smoke. At the time of print, the cause of the fire was not thought to be criminal, but the investigation is still ongoing.

VES got to enjoy virtual Farm Safety on October 18 and 21. Grade 1 students learned some important safety rules: one seat one rider, stay away from large farm animals, don't play on grain or go in grain carts or trucks as grain is like quicksand, wear a life jacket if on water. These students enjoyed the stor ybook, videos and demonstrations. The Grade 4/5 class learned about farm safety during their 40 minute presentation. They identified some dangers around equipment and animals. Students also learned the appropriate safety gear to be used during fun activities such as quading or horse riding. They continued learning about making safe choices after the presentation through the ex tra resources and videos provided. 5B learned how dangerous a PTO can be,

and really enjoyed the new game called Splat, which was like Jeopardy where the questions were all about farm equipment and animal safety. VES would like to thank Cate McKevitt for her virtual presentations and her fun sheets and games.

On October 22, both teachers and support staff had a professional development day. The teachers gathered as a group to discuss inclusion with Shelley Moore. Our goal was to align students’ needs to make our school more inclusive of all students. We also discussed mathology as well as literacy kits.

Support staff has three session times where they got to choose what most applied to them. Topics ranged from self care to storytelling to google add-ons to augmentative and alternative communication. Their day ended with keynote speaker, Christina Marlett, discussing the art of courageous self-care.

Vermilion Curling Club

After 20 months of uncertainty the Vermilion Curling is happy to be back on the ice as their new 2021-2022 season will start on November 9 with after-school junior curling and Ladies’ curling that evening.

“The board is very excited to get back to business mostly as usual. We are following the restrictions exemption program, which will mean some changes to our operations. However, to have the prospect of being on the ice this year is something we are all looking forward to. We also have a new ice plant, which should make life easier for our amazing ice manager, Rick Mackenzie and his family,” commented Danielle Eriksen.

Eriksen also mentioned that there will be a meeting on Tuesday, November 2 at 7 p.m. for any parents that would like to register their children for the after-school junior curling program.

“Please use the back door of the Reunion Hall. It is an entrance which faces the grandstands on the fairgrounds,” said Eriksen.

Eriksen also went on to explain that generally curlers register for a league for the season as a member, but that there are drop-in afternoon leagues on Monday and Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. that can be an option for curlers.

“Players can pay a yearly membership fee and attend as many afternoons as they like for the season 3” wide version or pay a drop-in fee of $10 per day. Curlers register as

individuals and teams are made up of whomever shows up each afternoon,” explained Erkison.

The club offers various leagues which people can register for which includes Junior Superleague for curlers 18 and under and is a unique opportunity to curl against other active youth curlers. On Tuesday afternoon there is junior curling from grades 4-12 which provides them the opportunity to curl and get coaching.

Erkison also says that Tuesday night there is generally one Ladies’ League draw. Wednesday night there are two draws where men’s and mixed teams can register.

Thursday night is their Superleague where the “cream of the crop” curlers can be found duking it out.

A Busy Week For The Tigers

The Vermilion Tigers have had three games in the past five days, and started the weekend with their first win of the season. Thursday evening they were victorious on the road over the Lloydminster Bandits, beating them 8 - 3.

Devon Culford opened the scoring four minutes into the first period, the first of his two goals in the period, and paved the way for two more goals by the Tigers in the first period with a power play goal from Andrew Beres and Ethan Nelson also scoring in the first 20 minutes of play. The Bandits only goals were scored during the first period.

Four unanswered goals finished the game off in the last two periods with Conner Roscoe scoring the only points for period two, and Ryan Nelson and a power play goal by Dalton Irvine finalizing the win.

Friday night action saw the Tigers square off at home against the Cold Lake Ice. An early power play goal at 1:19 by Cold Lake, created a bit of concern, but Dalton Irvine, Caius Quist and Deven Culford put fears to rest with strong offense play for the next nineteen minutes of play. Cold Lake made the Tigers work for the win, scoring six goals themselves during the game, but it wasn’t enough against the four remaining goals scored by Ethan Nelson and Jared Fischer in period two. Dalton Irvine, Caius Quist and Landon Petiot finished things off during the last 20 minutes giving a final score of 8 - 6 for the Tigers.

The Tigers ended their busy weekend with an at home game that went into overtime against the Wainwright Bisons.

The first period saw no scoring until Conner Roscoe’s first goal of the game at 14 minutes. A goal eight minutes into the second period from Dalton Irvine

answered Wainwright’s six minute goal which was the only scoring during the middle 20 minutes. After Wainwright took the lead in the third period, Evan Cooke tied the game up with a powerplay goal with only seven minutes of regular play left. Wainwright’s Drake Rennie scored the game winning goal part way through the overtime period to give the Bison’s the 4 - 3 win over the Tigers.
