A Personal Best In Pumpkin Growing

Stephania and Bill Jacula are no strangers to the agricultural world as they farm just north of Vermilion. Stephania has had an interest in pumpkins for awhile and have been growing all different brands for

about 10 to 15 years. She enjoys bringing her pumpkins to the Smoky Lake Pumpkin Fest but was unable to do so this year due to COVID, which was unfortunate because she reached a personal best in growing the Dill Giant pumpkin.

“This year was my personal best with my

If I had learned of the Pumpkin Fest in Lloydminster early enough I would have taken this one there,” commented Stephania.

According to Jacula, she started the seed process in April and by October 4 she had harvested the pumpkins. She also planted

Meet The Candidates Running For Buffalo Trail Public Schools Trustee Positions

When voters within the County of Vermilion River receive their ballots next week, they will be casting their vote for a Buffalo Trail Public School Trustee in their Division. These important positions represent residents on the Public School Board along with five other Trustees from around the school division. Ten people are vying for the opportunity to support the students and families of the public schools in the County of Vermilion River. The county is divided into four subdivisions for school board representation.

Trustees were asked the same three questions as councillor candidates: What do you want voters to know about you when they go to vote on October 18?

Why did you choose to run for trustee?

If elected, what is something you would like to see accomplished in your four year term?

In Electoral Subdivision #1 (Town of Vermilion), four candidates are running. Candidate Marty Pawlak wants voters to know that his first priority is the children attending Buffalo Trail Public School (BTPS). With three children in the public system right now, he is very familiar with some of the obstacles facing both students and teachers these days.

“I would like to see a budget that allocates more money to support classroom learning, not just the students, but the classroom staff too,” stated Pawlak.

He is running for trustee as he believes this polarized world has emphasized how important representation for the children in the buildings are, they need a safe environment to learn and need to have their voices heard too. If elected, Pawlak would like to address the curriculum that is being presented and add a voice to the opposition of the changes they want to implement.

Incumbent Bruce Marriott for Subdivision #1 believes that every student deserves the best education possible.

“I have seen the hard work that teachers and staff put into ensuring this,” states Marriott, adding that, “I am running for trustee again to continue to fight for rural schools in Alberta.

Funding for schools continues to go down affecting not only classroom needs but also transportation, staffing and resources for students and staff well being.”

If re-elected Bruce says that he will continue to fight for additional mental health funding in schools. Fiscal responsibility is key to ensure that funding is directed to schools and classrooms. Developing honest and trusting relationships between teachers, administration, board members and the community is essential.

“I will continue to serve students, families and provide good governance ensuring the safety and wellbeing Buffalo Trail Public Schools provide,” commented Marriott.

“Students are our future leaders and education is crucial!” said Darla Rae Yonkman who is running for a Trustee in Subdivision #1, Town of Vermilion. Darla has lived in Vermilion for over 21 years, she is a proud mother of three and grandmother of five, who all have and/or currently are attending the Vermilion Elementary School and J.R. Robson High School. Yonkman states she is very aware of what has been happening within the education system, and what has changed in the past 20 years. Darla is an active community member and volunteer and strongly believes she needs to do her part to help make the community successful. She has volunteered for the very successful Vermilion Elementary Hot Lunch Program. This program ensures all students have a nutritious meal at school, no matter what their situation. As a town committee member, Darla has worked to bring the Regional Centre and Splash Park to reality. Currently, she is the Chair of the Family and

Community Support Services Committee (FCSS), which supports many programs for adults and children. She has volunteered for the Heart, Stroke, and Diabetes Campaigns and implemented the “Work-Stress-Life: Striking a Balance Conference” in Vermilion. During the past 21 years, Darla has worked within the education sector and fully understands how strong quality education from kindergarten to grade 12 impacts the rest of a student’s life, no matter what path they may choose.

Yonkman has put her name forward to be a trustee believing she can be a strong advocate for students and will always put students’ and parents’ needs first. Darla says she has the administrative skills and experience to be a goal setter, planner, organizer, evaluator, financial planner, policy maker, legislator, communicator, advocate for education, and experienced adjudicator. As a lobbyist, Yonkman has communicated with all levels of government to ensure that her voice was heard by those who have the power to make decisions.

Yonkman stresses that we must continue to lobby the government to keep education high on the list of public priorities.

“If elected my top priority would be to promote and support 2-way communication with all stakeholders, students, parents, teachers, and community members,” said Yonkman.

Darla stated that she would use her leadership skills as a team member to establish priorities, set goals, measure progress, allocate resources, establish a respectful, caring, professional climate, create collaborative relationships, and promote continuous improvement. She believes positive, open discussions between parents and teachers would build a relationship of trust and this collaboration will help ensure the students are provided with safe and healthy learning environments. She would assist in creating educational policies in terms of what is best for the development of all students, while being transparent and accountable to the public.

With the new curriculum currently being piloted, Yonkman says she will be checking in to view the findings and communicate with parents to find out their concerns.

She also has seen some curriculum that is concerning to her.

“I have the passion, dedication, and work ethic to put towards quality education that all students deserve. Let me be “YOUR VOICE” and TOGETHER we can make education the best that it can be and ensure our schools have a positive image in the community that we can celebrate together and be PROUD OF!” said Yonkman.

Nicole Hauck is running for Subdivision #1. She loves living in Vermilion, and has a vested interest in public education as she has two children who will be entering school soon. She wants voters to know that she supports parents health decisions for their children. Helping everyone to be courageous and brave through this pandemic is a goal of Hauck’s, she would like to see all students have access to school, sports, and extra- curricular activities regardless of their COVID vaccination status.

Hauck is running as she saw a need for the community to have strong individuals stepping up to act as a voice for parents and to provide better transparency to board decisions.

“We haven’t had an election in this subdivision in a decade, so I felt there was a need for a trustee who was elected and could be held accountable by voters,” stated Hauck.

If elected, Nicole would like to help establish some stability for everyone in the division, she stated that we need to step forward together to provide the best educational expe-

rience for our students.

The second candidate for Subdivision #3 is Jessica Kaastrup.

“I am honoured to have the opportunity to run for this position,” states Kaastrup.

Before starting a family, she was an elementary teacher for five years with the Buffalo Trail Public School Division.

During that time, she worked at Vermilion Elementary School and Kitscoty Elementary School, teaching grades one, five, and six.

“My experience as a teacher and the initiatives I was involved in within the division lend a unique perspective on how to best support our teachers and how to support students to be successful and robust lifelong learners,” states Kaastrup.

Having been a teacher with Buffalo Trail Public Schools, education is a passion of Jessica’s.

“I feel that this is an incredible opportunity to make a positive impact within our school division in another way,” stated Kassstrup.

A key reason for her interest in running for Trustee is her concerns with the draft of the Kindergarten to Grade 6 Curriculum.

Continued from page 3 “I strongly feel that what was presented was developmentally inappropriate and sets very unrealistic expectations for students,” commented Kaastrup, “the learning outcomes were not relatable nor inclusive to the students.

Our curriculum should result in excited and engaged learners making connections from their own lives to what they’re learning. That is how active and engaged learning happens. The K-6 students of our division (and the province) deserve and need a better K-6 curriculum to encourage successful lifelong learning.”

If elected Jessica would love to create a consistent program of Standardized Literacy Assessment throughout the school division. Currently, this is a practice that occurs in some schools - but, she believes consistency is important, so she would like to advocate for a common literacy tool to give teachers an understanding and ability to share experience and intervention strategies to further support and engage students. She wants to foster successful, enthusiastic, and lifelong readers in Buffalo Trail Public Schools, and believes a consistent program of Standardized Literacy Assessment would do that.

Running in Subdivision #4 (Marwayne/Dewberry area)

The Vermilion Voice | October 12, 2021 Cameron Stevenson wants voters to know his concerns about rural education including the centralization of things happening, and how funding from the province has focused on urban schools. The proposed curriculum changes for elementary students also greatly concerns him, and he is running as he felt it was the best way he could contribute to ensuring quality education is provided in the division.

“I am running a campaign of honesty, integrity and transparency,” states Stevenson.

He has spent the past 11 years on the county fire department, and is their chief training officer at present. He noted that he is very familiar with the teaching process through his past volunteer experience coaching volleyball and teaching at fire etc, he mentioned that he has a wealth of knowledge working with students. With a wife who teaches in BTPS, and two children in school, Cameron has been exposed to many different perspectives of education in Alberta.

If elected, Stevenson would like to see the rural schools be given the opportunity to have an academy school, perhaps a rodeo or chuckwagon option for students to partake in. He would like to look at ways to bring students

back to his communities after they graduate.

Also running for Subdivision #4, David Bensmiller wants voters to know that he, “believes in hard work and that strong family values are what is needed in the world we live in today.” His family has been in this area for four generations and he is an active community volunteer.

“I decided to run in this election to help the children in my area. I went to Dewberry school and loved the rural lifestyle and that’s why I chose to move my family back to Dewberry ten years ago from Calgary. I believe rural schools are the heartbeat of our communities and I worry about the survival of our communities without them,” says Bensmiller.

His main goal if elected is to help with the children’s mental health.

“COVID has stolen so much from the children and they are struggling daily with the world they live in,” stated Bensmiller. “The kids help phone received 1.9 million calls in 2019 and over doubled to 4 million calls in 2020, ten of these are suicide calls per day in Canada and these numbers are unacceptable.” He commented he will fight to get more sporting options, drama clubs, school dances, counselling etc. to help with youth mental health issues.

Retiring paramedic of 22 years, Robert Snow wants to continue serving the community and he feels town council is a way to do that while helping to address concerns he has heard over the years.

“I have had lots of interactions over the years with citizens, and I believe I can be a good voice of reason on council,” commented Snow.

He feels his background in health care supervision, and sitting on both the disaster planning and public safety committees will further enhance his contribution to council. Snow was part of an initiative that spoke to seniors in town every three months to hear and help address their concerns, and if elected he would like to support programs like that to continue. “ We need to build on health and wellness support for our seniors,” states Snow, “I would like to see more support for the services and programs that are already in place supporting our citizens.”

“If elected, I would like to create a more flexible and manageable five year plan for the community,” states Rayment.

He also wants to focus on a stronger residential development plan, as well as more internal promotion of the community, encouraging people in Vermilion and the surrounding area to stay in town to shop and do business.

The Vermilion Voice | October 12, 2021 Continued from page 4 A resident of Vermilion since 1983, incumbent Richard Yaceyko is looking to represent the citizens of Vermilion for another four years. He states that he feels he has a good understanding of the community, and that sitting on the various committees and projects over the years has provided him with lots of experience to pass on to new council members.

“I am here to represent the community,” says Yaceyko, “ I want to create a place where my children will want to raise their children.”

Yaceyko was asked by community members to run again, and it is a commitment he is more than willing to make again.

He would like to share his experience and be a mentor to new councillors, he had that opportunity when he started, and found it very beneficial.

If re-elected, Yaceyko will continue his work on bringing the Senior Level Four (SL4) supports to Vermilion, so that people can stay in the community as their long term care needs change. He would also like to see the Broadband Initiative to its completion. Finally, the residential lot expansion in North Brennan is a focus of Yaceyko’s, as he believes there is a good plan in place for future development there.

“I love this community, I grew up here and want to give back to it,” declares candidate Paul Conlon, “I have chosen to live and work in Vermilion, and am raising my family here.”

As an almost four year member fire department member and a partner in a local business, Conlon is an active community member.

Conlon states that “the best way to get a job done right is to do it yourself,” and this is his motivation to join the council. He is planning on staying in the community, and wants to become fully involved in Vermilion’s growth. He enjoys talking to community members and hearing people’s varying perspectives on Vermilion.

If elected, Conlon is planning on focusing on several things, including advocating

for an assessment of the town’s taxes, and how those dollars are spent. He would also like to be part of some long-term planning for the town, one that takes future expansion into play as well as road repairs and improvements, and enhancement of places for youth activities (for example, lights at the skatepark lights at the skatepark and a possible new outdoor pool to name a few).

Safer pedestrian access to the businesses on the east side of Highway 41 on the south side of town is something Conlon would like to address while on council.

Tourism is also something Paul is interested in promoting, with the town looking at innovative ways to attract people to visit, like e-scooters or e-bikes.

Former Councilor Richard Lavoie is running again in this year’s election. He wants voters to know that he feels he is very successful at dealing with solving problems, and coming up with tangible solutions.

“When it comes to decision making, I like to gather as many puzzle pieces as possible before deciding on any matter,” states Lavoie, “if I lack the expertise or am missing information, I will seek it out before I vote on any resolution.”

Lavoie declares he is a realist and visionary, and gets the job done. Lavoie feels that 30 years of banking experience lends to his understanding of budgets and financial statements, and he plans to address concerns with the town's budget if elected on October 18.

He chose to run again after being asked by some community members, and he and his family decided that yes this was a good time to give back to the community.

“I am disappointed with the current financial statement for the Town of Vermilion,” states Lavoie, “it appears that we have taken on too much debt and our operating expenses continue to escalate year over year. If elected I feel as councillors we need to get our financial affairs back in order.”

He is also concerned about the senior population in Vermilion, especially those who live in their own homes and the cost of living increases they continually face.

As we harvest our gardens this time of year, there is usually an abundance of c u c um ber s, tomatoes, dill, parsley and onions. Here are a few recipes to enjoy this seasonal produce. If you are prone to allergies in the fall, this might be the perfect salad for you, as both cucumbers and onions contain the nutrient quercetin, which is a natural anti-histamine. Jerusalem salad is made with the ingredients chopped into approximately 1/4-inch cubes. To do this quickly and easily, I cut a grid into the cucumber, onion, and tomato and then slice it, that way it falls diced onto the cutting board with each slice.

This salad can be served as a side, and it can be used to fill a pita. It is only called an Israeli salad outside of the Middle East, where in Hebrew it is simply referred to as a chopped salad or a vegetable salad. It is

It was in 1951 that the decision was made not to destroy history, but to simply move it, in Vermilion.

In order to make way for, what was described as a “ultra-modern coffee shop”, an old two-storey frame building was moved off of the main street of Vermilion and into the east end of town where it would be granted new life as a residence.

The property itself had been purchased

by Roy Watkins of Wadena, Saskatchewan and he had plans to build the coffee shop, and a confectionary store, on the lad.

This is actually a popular salad all through the Mediterranean. There are variations that add one of the following: chopped mint, dill, oregano, basil, sage, chopped olives, radishes, chickpeas or omit the red pepper. Eating this salad is a great way to add several servings of vegetables as well as many vitamins, micro nutrients and anti-oxidants. Raw vegetables have natural enzymes. Enzymes are catalysts to the many chemical reactions that take place in the body that give us vitality. Alive active enzymes in our food boost our metabolism and our health.

Both cucumbers and onions contain the nutrient quercetin, which is a natural anti-histamine which may provide relief to allergy suffers. Cucumbers also contain nutrients that nourish the pancreas and plant sterols that may help regulate cholesterol. Other nutrients in cucumbers such as silica promote healthy connective tissue and hair growth. Tomatoes have many anti-oxidants, most notable the carotenoid

lycopene. Lycopene is known to help with bone and heart health. Phytonutrients in tomatoes have been found to decrease LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol and triglycerides levels. Research studies have found that a substance in tomatoes called alpha-tomatine helps to prevent cancer of the prostate. Current research has shown that alpha-tomatine causes apoptosis (cell death) of prostate cancer cells and nonsmall lung cancer cells. Further studies have shown that a diet rich in tomatoes correlated with a lower risk of Alzheimer’s and obesity. They are also a good source of vitamin K, vitamin E manganese and many other nutrients.

Jerusalem ( Israeli) Salad 3 roma tomatoes 1 English cucumber, half peeled1 red pepper 1/2cup chopped red onion 1/2 cup chopped parsley 3 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons lemon or lime juice freshly squeezed

3/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper Chop the cucumber, tomato, onion and red pepper into approximately 1 inch pieces. (read above for a easy trick to do this). Chop the parsley finely, lightly toss the ingredients together, and then drizzle with the olive oil first, then the lemon or lime juice and then the salt and pepper.

Toss to coat and serve fresh. It does store well in the refrigerator, but they is a softening of the cucumber.

Cucumber Salad 1 1/2 cups natural Greek yogurt or sour cream or mixture 1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill 1 teaspoon sea salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 2 1/2 teaspoons lemon 2 – 3 teaspoons honey 1 long English cucumber sliced 1/2 onion thinly sliced Mix together the yogurt, dill, salt, pepper, lemon and honey. Stir in the cucumber and onion. This salad is best served fresh.

Moving History For A Coffee Shop

As for the frame building, its history went back to the very founding of Vermilion itself.

It was built in 1905 and served as both the home and office for Dr. H.L. Burris. Burris would eventually leave the community to live and work in Kamloops.

The history of the building continues after that point through. It was the first building in the town to be used as a school, when classes were held there in January of 1906.

Classes would be conducted into the building for three months until the increasing number of pupils necessitated a move for the students to larger premises at the Methodist Church.

The building would continue its history from that point where it once again became

a doctor’s office. Unusual for the time, the doctor was a Dr. Head-Patrick, one of the first female doctors in the history of Alberta.

The story of Dr. Christina Head-Patrick is an interesting one. She had previously worked as a school teacher and after marrying druggist Richard Patrick, the couple lived in Yorkton. Then, she suddenly decided to accomplish her dream and she left her husband, auctioned off everything she owned and studied at the New York Post Graduate Medical School and LyingIn Hospital. At the time, she was 44-yearsold. She would find her way to Vermilion after graduation, where she also served as the medical officer for the area. She would remain in Vermilion for 15 years. She even-

tually became the resident physician at the Women’s College Hospital in Toronto and would pass away at the age of 70 on May 17, 1933.

As time went on, its life would continue to adjust and it would eventually serve as a barber shop that was operated first by Victor Duncan, and then by Lloyd Harris.

Google Lens is an app released in the last few years by major t e c h c o n g l o m e rate Google. Those who have not yet heard of the app may confuse its technology with magic. By simply pointing the phone's camera at any object, Google will be able to find the appropriate information related to what it sees through the phone camera and offer a list of topical resources to the user. Even though it may seem

too good to be true it is indeed a real functioning app, and the technology behind it is at the leading edge of AI research.

Google’s Lens is capable of identifying items of multiple categories, it allows c o pying and pasting tex t from images, finding physical objects online, and identifying locations and landmarks. When pointing the phone's camera towards a product Google’s app will give results for where to buy the product, how much it costs and what it is exactly called. This means that even if you're at a friend's house and you want to know where they got a sofa for example all you would do is point your phone's camera, and like magic be redirected to the online store selling that product. However this app isn't limited to merchandise, in fact it is even capable of scanning plants and animals and identifying the breed or species for you.

This means no more guessing if that berr y is poisonous and knowing for certain what breed your cat or dog is.

Google Lens isn' t exactly a new te c hn o l o g y, it has b e en around since 2018. Of course, three years isn't exactly old, but with how fast technology gets iterated these days that's equivalent to about three generations of new phones. So, why does it matter how old the technology is? Well, it doesn’t really, but considering how useful the app is it's surprising that almost no-one has heard of it, and if they have they almost certainly d o n' t u se it . T h e m o st like ly reason for the slower adoption of the app is that it really wasn't t h at g o o d at l au n c h. Lu c k i l y

since its release Google has made some improvements. When the app was first released it wasn' t entirely accurate, it would often be relatively close, but not always. Today however, Google Lens was able to successfully give me the exact item I scanned every time (excluding situations with bad lighting conditions).

So, if it's not magic then how does it all work? Well, it's using one main technological advancement of the last five years, AI, also known as ar tificial intelligence. Essentially, this AI is a very advanced pattern recognition software. Using something called a learning algorithm the scientists over at Google were able to create a piece of software that would “learn” how to identify items in pictures. They did this by having the software make essentially random guesses at first for what

they thought they were being shown.

All this was happening while researchers were giving the AI abstract scores based on how well they did at guessing the object. Multiple variations of these AI’s would be tested at once so researchers could see which performed the most accurately. Once the best AI is chosen this process is then continued with the team creating variants of the most proficient AI. They can then repeat testing them to see which is the most successful once more. That new AI will then become the base for the next version of the sof tware. This process is repeated hundreds of thousands of times until eventually an extremely effective AI is created. Now we just get to reap the reward for all that effort and take advantage of a ver y good piece of software.

Seven Candidates Running For County Council

Within the County of Vermilion River, seven people are running for positions on the County Council. Divisions four, five and seven will have candidates on the ballot on October 18.

The contenders took a few minutes to answer three questions and get their message out to the voters.

Candidates were asked three questions: What do you want voters to know about you when they go to vote on October 18?

Why did you choose to run for County Councillor?

If elected, what is something you would like to see accomplished in your four year term?

Division 4 has three nominees, Lonnie Wolgien, the incumbent wants voters to know that he has lived in the County of Vermilion River for 25 plus years and raised a family of three boys, who are now on their own. Wolgien’s experience within the agricultural industry includes 25 years in the grain and agro business and today he, his wife and one son currently operate a bale hauling business along with a small farming operation, south of Vermilion.

“With this I feel that I have a good understanding of the importance of the county infrastructure, financial needs and future planning required to serve future generations of residents in the County of Vermilion River,” commented Wolgien.

Wolgien decided to stay on as councillor for another term on the basis that he can see further improvements within the infrastructure and the importance of this to agriculture and to the county Hamlets.

“There are large challenges coming forward with the loss of revenue from our oil industry, our Provincial and Federal governments reducing funding to the municipal governments,” stated Lonnie, “ this is a challenge I look forward to while keeping tax increases to a minimum.”

If re-elected Wolgien would like to see the completion of the Road Rehabilitation Project (it is currently in year 2 of the 5 year plan). In the next term he also plans to assist in the planning and development of the County Fire Services to improve resident safety along with their properties. Last but not least, Wolgien would like to see the completion of the Freshwater Project supplying water to Islay, Dewberry and Clandonald.

Wolgien commented that, “Due to COVID I will not be going door to door campaigning, I don't know what residents thoughts on the risks of further spreading phase 4 COVID. Please feel free to contact myself via phone (780-787-4991) or email (div4@county24. com).”

George Kuneff is also running for Councillor in Division 4, and wants to make sure voters know that he intends to work hard to represent the residents in his community, while being responsible with taxpayers money. George says he is passionate about the County, with 24 years of employment with them, he has kept abreast of the concerns and issues that County residents face.

“I want to see both the gas and oil and agricultural industries do well in the area,” states Kuneff.

He is running as he saw Councillor as the, “opportunity to represent my community and be the voice they need,” he declared.

Kuneff discussed that county politics can affect people’s daily lives, and he intends to follow the majority of his constituents' needs and wants on issues if elected. The needs for road improvements will be a focus of Kuneff’s, particularly the arterial

roads in all the communities. He will also focus on how tax dollars are spent, and if there is a way to curb tax increases in the county.

Murray Brown feels his career as an electrician in the County area and being a member of Vermilion’s Fire Department for 16 years has exposed him to the concerns and cares of all divisions in the County, not just Division 4. He wants voters to know he is a straightforward person, who believes in, “saying what you mean and meaning what you say,” and states that, “If I can’t answer a question, I will do the work to find out the answer.”

Brown believes there is a disconnect between the County and the communities in it, which was his motivation to run for council. He wants to be a part of the process in steering the County to grow and expand in the future.

“Community involvement is so important to growth,” states Brown, “and if elected I want to enhance cooperation and collaborative communication between the county and the towns they deal with, including Lloydminster.” He will strive to see enhancements and improvements in this area.

Jason Stelmaschuk, incumbent for Division 5 wants voters to know that he believes in leading by serving, he was elected four years ago to serve his division, and listen and collaborate with his ratepayers and fellow Councillors to make the best decisions possible for the County’s residents. He feels that his previous employment experiences in finance, municipal government, oil and agriculture provided a wide range of skills that he has drawn upon to be the best candidate for the job.

“There have been so many positive changes and improvements in the four year term. I have a great team of council and staff who share the same vision as I do and see the same opportunities to further improve, develop and strenghten the County of Vermilion River,” stated Stelmaschuk.

If re-elected, Stelmaschuk will focus on the continuation of road improvements, and some drainage concerns in the division, particularly in the Blackfoot area. He is presently proactive with the economic development initiative, and wants to continue working on that. He is wanting to reduce the red tape for development to retain and attract new growth while focusing on the current business entrepeneurs in the community. Stemaschuk stated the best way to achieve this goal is with consultation and collaboration with the business leaders throughout the County.

Running against Stelmaschuk is Jacob Mohrbutter. Mohrbutter wants voters to know that he believes smart decisions need to be made in the county, and the community needs a strong voice to be heard.

“I am very invested in the community and want to be involved and give a voice to the residents,” declared Jacob.

If elected, Mohrbutter would like to work on getting more local production businesses in the area, such as greenhouses, meat processing ser vices to enhance local small business markets.

“Let’s encourage and support these businesses to start in the area,” states Mohrbutter, “let’s sell the county as a place to grow a business.”

Mohrbutter believes the county is well taken care of, and wants to work to maintain this level of quality.

He feels that it is important that the County be smart about how it spends the money in the budget. His slogan is “A voice for efficient cost effective growth.”

In Division 7 incumbent Leslie Cusack commented that the first term provided learning everyday, and he knows that the councillors working together is what

Born and raised in the area, Cusack is an avid community volunteer. If re-elected, he would like to finish the work that has been done to attract urbanites who are looking for a change to the rural municipalities.

“I am proud to live in a rural hamlet, and want people to enjoy Clandonald and Dewberry.” stated Cusack.

For the next four years, he will focus on the roads in the County that will be utilized by the oil companies in the area, and their upkeep and maintenance by the companies.

“We need to keep on them to keep them in usable conditions,” Cusack says.

He also wants to focus on educating constituents on rural crime prevention for everyone’s safety.

National Day For Truth And Reconciliation

Earlier this year the unmarked graves of countless first nations children were uncovered around Canada's residential schools. To commemorate the horrific legacy of residential schools a national holiday was created “National Day for Truth and Reconciliation”. This is one of the first times a country has publicly acknowledged a mistake it made in its past and chose to give a day for remembrance of that.

After decades of abuse from residential schools, people who were affected may finally be able to find some solace.

Earlier this year students at J.R Robson School volunteered to commemorate someone who was

lost. They chose to do this by tying orange r ib b ons along the fen c e at J.R Ro bson School. Now after calls from all over the country, Canada decided to realize its wrongdoings with the National Day For Truth And Reconciliation. People country-wide wore orange with respect for those children who were harmed by residential schools. This day also gave many First Nations Peoples the platform to voice their concerns and tell their stories through Zoom conferences.

Hopefully, this day is just one more step in the right direction towards making right the wrongs that have been done to first nations peoples in the past.

Update On Energy Savings For Businesses

On Energy Ef ficiency Day 2021, Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) announced it has extended the completion date for projects funded through its Energy Savings for Business (ESB) program until March 31, 2023. The goal of this program is to help Alberta businesses obtain financial assistance

needed to replace old technologies and to go net zero on emissions. The incentive limit for parent companies has been doubled, from $500,000 to $1 million, allowing $250,000 to be given to each individual project.

“Alberta businesses now have even more opportunity to invest in energyand cost-saving technologies that will improve their operational efficiency

and reduce their emissions,” said Steve MacDonald, CEO, ERA. The program is designed to support the more than 16 0,0 0 0 small and medium-scale enterprises in Alberta.

The Growing Industry Of Local Bison

The Bison industry has been steadily growing over the last 20 or so years. With the price per pound for a Grade ‘A’ bull going from $1.60 in 2004 to about $6.20 on average in the last couple years. That's more than doubled and it isn't due to inflation considering inflation would only have risen the price about 80 cents since 2004. No, it's because of the growing demand for bison meat. Many restaurant owners have been looking for that extra something to give them an edge over competitors. And many found that using bison in their burgers and other menu items was that perfect thing.

Bison farming is similar to farming cattle in a lot of ways. However, it does vary in a few important ways.

“The main difference would be that bison are less hands on and lower maintenance overall,” said Justin and Shaelyn from Irish Creek Bison.

This is because bison are less domesticated than cattle, and still have strong natural instincts. Something that many might find interesting is that rather than being chased like c at t l e, b i s o n follow much better.

Bison are also much bigger animals and according to Justin, “ bison will take 6 months to a year longer than a beef animal to finish.”

Bison is also a much healthier option, as a bison burger only contains about 6g of fat, compared to a beef burger’s 28 grams. This along with the fact that it's nearly unheard of to castrate bison or to give them growth hor m o nes m akes them a ver y good alternative to beef.

The day-to - day

task of running a bison farm looks very similar to raising cattle, with chores including checking water, feed, mineral and overall herd health. Irish Creek Bison stated they also move the herd to new pastures twice a week as well as keep the fences in good shape. Justin and Shaelyn also said, “on our ranch we only handle the bison herds once a year and that is at weaning time and when they are processed and sorted.” Once processed and sorted bison can be distributed in a few different ways, at Irish Creek Bison they send the finished animals to the states, sell bison meat straight off the farm and sell breeding stock off the farm.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic the bison indus- File Photo try has been affected slightly by the closing of restaurants. Since people are closing and reopening their foodservice businesses they are trying to cut down on the food waste. However, Irish Creek Bison does sell right off the farm, and if you're interested in helping out local businesses or just want to try bison for the first time it is a great opportunity.

PANDEMIC-INSPIRED BUSINESS TRENDS: How Small Businesses Have Adapted

BDC Small Business Week, which takes place from October 17 to 23, is an ideal occasion to celebrate Canada’s small businesses and recognize their critical role in the country’s economy. Although they were particularly hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent economic crisis, many small business owners demonstrated resilience and ingenuity. Here are a few ways these entrepreneurs have adapted to new business realities.

Transforming their offerings W h i l e m a ny C a n ad i a n s we r e e ag e r to support local businesses during the pandemic, owners still had to figure out how to get their products into the hands of consumers despite lockdowns and public health restrictions.

Some restaurants, for example, created new dining experiences with ready-to-cook meal kits or take-out picnic baskets.

Companies of all sizes had to adapt to having a remote work forc e during the pandemic. For certain small business owners, however, this required them to think outside the box. 5 Tips To Help Boost Your Resiliency

(NC) After facing a challenging year and half, many of us feel like we’re running on empty. But as the world slowly reopens, you may feel like you still need to do some recovering and boost your strength. Here are some ways to spring you back into shape, one day at a time.

1. Have a break.

Shake off that voice telling you this is a selfish thing to do. Anything that brings joy may be what you need to tackle whatever is coming your way.

Rotary Club Honours Art Boggs

Members of the Vermilion Rotar y Club honoured lifetime member Ar t Boggs on October 9 at the Rotar y Lookout. The club placed a plaque on a bench where his wife was also memorialized af ter her passing in 2006. The plaque placed for Art says, ‘In recognition of our fellow Rotarian for his vision, devotion, and leadership in the creation of the Rotary Lookout, 2005.’

Boggs was an active Rotarian from 1979 until he retired from the organization in 2013, but remained an honorary Rotarian until his passing in 2020.

Ar t wa s k n ow n for hi s c o m munit y involvement in many volunteer positions, but the bulk of Boggs’ work in

the community was through his time with the Rotary. As an active Rotarian Boggs was instrumental in the development and design of the Rotary Lookout, as well he served in many leadership capacities, chaired committees, canvassed, sold tickets, and participated in several international missions.

Rotarian Bruce MacDuff spoke on behalf of the club.

“Art was instrumental in me becoming a Rotarian and it gives me much pleasure to do this on Arts’ behalf. Art was part of Rotary since he joined in ’79 and when we decided on a project in 2005 to celebrate the anniversary of Rotary being 100 years old, Vermilion being 50 years old this project came to light,” said MacDuff.

He also went on to say that Art was

instrumental in doing a lot of the things that needed to get done to have the Rotary Lookout to be where it is today, for many to enjoy including himself and his wife who often walk the trail and come up to the Lookout for a rest.

“Art did a lot of the things that got d o n e i n c l u d i n g d o i n g t h e d e s i g n, getting the plaques put together, and finding the history to do all of those things. Art worked with the Town, he worked with Alberta Transportation to find the location and get the permission for the lo c ation and he worked on the budget to make sure ever ything came in on time and on dollars.

More Than $13 Million Raised As Fundraising Campaign Successfully Reaches Finish Line

Lakeland College Submitted

(Vermilion, Alta.) The generosity of more than 1,100 donors throughout Canada and beyond has made Leading. Learning. The Lakeland Campaign. the most successful fundraising campaign in Lakeland College’s history.

The campaign began in 2016 and concluded on June 30. A total of $13,374,066

was raised, surpassing the campaign goal of $11 million.

“Our thanks to everyone for supporting Lakeland and our current and future students through their gifts to this campaign.

We’re thrilled that the enthusiastic support of donors made it possible for us to exceed our campaign goal. This support enables Lakeland to do what it does best: graduate jobready leaders equipped for success in

their careers and lives,” says Mike Kotelko, campaign leadership team chair and a member of Lakeland’s Class of 1982.

Expanding student success, empowering the next leaders in agriculture, and growing resultsoriented research were the campaign priorities, says Dr. Alice Wainwright-Stewart, president and CEO of Lakeland College.

While the total is impressive, WainwrightStewart said the number will slip from

Gifts also supported our growing applied research efforts. We are increasing our capacity to produce results of value to industry and producers plus providing new student learning opportunities,” says Wainwright-Stewart.

Supporters of Leading. Learning. The Lakeland Campaign. reside in nine different Canadian provinces and three American states. Individuals, families, businesses, foundations, and organizations made gifts that ranged from $5 to $4 million.

Alumni, students, community members and Lakeland employees are among the 1,131 donors.

Collectively they gave 3,077 gifts to the campaign. They gave gifts of cash, land, buildings, equipment, livestock, securities and life insurance. Some left a legacy by including Lakeland in their estate plans.

Many contributed by participating in fundraising events such as the Rustlers Golf Tournament, President’s Gala and Feast on the Farm.

“My heartfelt thanks to everyone who played a leading role during this exciting time of transformation for Lakeland College,” says Wainwright-Stewart. “Despite the challenges brought forth by COVID-19, the support of donors, our campaign leadership team and our employees never wavered, ensuring Leading. Lakeland Trades To Expand With Pre-Employment Automotive

Lakeland College Submitted

(Vermilion, Alta.) Students looking for a jumpstart in the automotive industry will have another option to consider with the launch of Lakeland College’s preemployment automotive service technician program. Launching in fall 2022, this program will be offered at Lakeland’s Vermilion campus.

“Lakeland works hand-in-hand with industry, ensuring our programming meets their evolving needs,” says Dave King, dean of trades and technology at Lakeland. “One thing we have heard over and over again is the need for an educational program for students who are interested in the automotive indus-

try but are looking for more experience before committing to an apprenticeship, or perhaps wanting to broaden their skills before accepting one. This program will meet that need.”

Students can apply without having first secured employment, unlike the apprenticeship program. They’ll learn the same material as a first-year apprentice, growing their skills and knowledge through twelve weeks of classroom work and a four-week practicum.

Technical training will include basic maintenance, brake and electrical systems, as well as steering and suspension. The program also includes safety training, including Standard First Aid and CPR. Graduates of the program may be

eligible to write their 1st year apprenticeship exam.

The pre- employment automotive service technician program joins Lakeland’s pre-employment electrician and welder programs, part of Lakeland’s School of Trades and Technology.

The college also offers apprenticeship programs in automotive service technician, carpentry, electrician, heavy equipment technician, parts technician and welding.

lost enthusiasm! Students had to navigate a fun obstacle course in a relay race, with fun had by all. This year’s student council was sworn in and Ms. Hebert was welcomed in typical St. J style. Overall, it was an amazing day!

Grade 5 students in Miss Frankiw’s class were sorted into “houses'' this week as well. But not St. J houses, Harry Potter ones! After reading about how Harry was sorted into his house, Miss Frankiw sorted her students into Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin houses as well.

These lucky grade 5 students also got to put their fine motor skills to the test by sewing little pumpkins! Miss. Frankiw, we appreciate your patience, bravery, and of course your enthusiasm!

Mrs. Lysons’ class was tr ying to make sure that this year’s Thanksgiving turkey was hidden in plain sight. Grade 2 students had to come up with a disguise for their turkey and write about why their turkey should be spared from becoming

Thanksgiving dinner. There were turkeys disguised as cows, dogs, there was even a flamingo! Looks like more people will be eating ham this year!

Students were busy learning with their “buddies” this week as well. Mrs. Despins grade 4 class and their Kindergarten buddies shared a Thanksgiving brunch, with food provided by the families of students. Thank you so much to

the parents who made sure this lovely gesture was possible. Mrs. Zayac’s grade 4 buddies were busy crafting pinecone Thanksgiving turkeys with their grade 1 buddies. Each buddy used a giant pine cone, with the big buddies working the glue gun and the little buddies manning the feathers. As you can imagine, it was a wonderfully sticky and messy learning opportunity!

Grade 1 had such a great field trip to the Vermilion Provincial Park on October 1. It was an awesome learning experience that connected to their science curriculum, “Seasonal Changes”. They went on a fall walk, had a nature scavenger hunt, did leaf rubbings, jumped in leaf piles, and had some playground fun.

We had our second assembly of this school year on October 5. Mrs. Tomkins talked with us about AR and how we have made some changes and kept other things the same. The top reader for division 1 was Gideon Williams, and for division 2, it was Douglas Romeo. The VES AR total for September was 1652.3 points.

Mr. Anhorn told the students that he would be leaving VES in a few weeks.

Mrs. Moses talked about compassion, which is October’s virtue, and then we watched a compassion video. Mrs. Joa complimented students and staff on their super participation in crazy hat/ hair day, and mentioned that the hat that Mrs. Page was wearing was over 100 years old and found in the walls of her house. We concluded the assembly with a chair activity.

Leighton Bates. He will be working on his teacher practicum with Mr. Haslehurst in Grade 4/5 and Mr. Beecroft in Grade 5. He will begin on October 12.

VES participated in the beverage container recycling program that is available to Alberta schools. The goal of the program is to help encourage youth to get involved in this important recycling initiative within an educational environment. VES was one of the top 10 schools in Alberta to collect and report the most containers/student. We reported 15 149 containers which was 53.72/student. This qualified us to win a cash prize of $1000. Way to go VES. This money will be put towards Grade level field trip accounts. We want to thank Mrs. Baldwin for keeping such a terrific record keeping system to allow us this opportunity to place in the top 10 schools.

A Regular Town Council Meeting was held on O c to ber 5. This was the last meeting for the present Town Council, with the election on October 18, there will be several new faces in chambers on October 26. Here are some of the highlights: Derek Young will be leaving the position of Director of Infrastruc ture an d Planning Ser vi c es with the Town of Vermilion shortly, and Mayor McAuley took a few minutes to thank Young for all of his hard work while in the position.

Mayor McAuley also gave thanks to Fire Chief Bill Roth for all the

years of service to the community.

Chief Roth will be retiring at the end of October, af ter 35 years of ser vice. A gif t was presented on behalf of the Council to show their appreciation of his ser vice. Chief Roth expressed that it has been an honour and privilege to ser ve the residents of Vermilion and appreciated the support from Council.

Councillor Justin Thompson moved that Council for the Town of Ver m ili o n ac c e pt t h e c o m m ittee recommendation of $1,000 to support the Vermilion Vipers Swim Club from the community grant

allocation. This money is needed for new lane marking ropes, a vitally important part of swim meets and practices for the club. Motion carried.

Meetings can now occur in person at the Town office, with members of the public invited to join the council. You can also continue to watch Council meetings through the Town’s YouTube channel which you can access through their website.

The next regular Council meeting is October 26, at 7 p.m. This meeting will consist of the new Council for the next term.

Warder (Rita Barr) of St. Saviours Anglican Church, along with the Rector, Rev. Elizabeth Metcalfe, presented cheques totaling $2,546. to the School Lunch Programs at Vermilion Elementary School and St. Jerome’s School. This amount represents the total of the funds raised at the churches recent Community Garage Sale.

“This is the 3rd year in a row that we have been able to offer support to the school lunch program”, said Rev. Metcalfe, “and we would like to thank the community of Vermilion for their overwhelming support of this fundraiser. She went on to say that making the decision to hold the event (which was cancelled last year because of COVID restrictions) was a difficult one.

“We went ahead because we recognized that the need was likely greater than ever,” she explained, and “it is one of the ways that we as a largely senior congregation can show our care and support for the families in our community. As it turned out, on the Thursday before opening, word came down from the Government of increased health restrictions, and we had a few anxious moments until we realized that the protocols we had already put in place would meet the new requirements for gathering.”

As a result of the stiffer standards, the sale was extended so that everyone would have the opportunity to attend. On the Friday night, a line-up formed, as the capacity of the church hall was quickly met, but everyone was understanding and patient with the wait. Due to the generosity

of the community, at the end of the sale on Saturday, there was still a large number of items unsold, so a quick decision to extend the sale was made, and Tuesday night was a “Post Election, No Tax, Everything Free” event. Over $500 was donated on that evening alone.

The event will be hosted by students and faculty and provides the oppor tunit y to connect with s t u d e n t s a n d i n s t r u c t o r s i n l i ve sessions demonstrating how Lakeland’s hands-on approach to education delivers real-world results according to a press release.

Some Albertans Are Now Eligible For A Third COVID-19 Vaccine Dose

On October 6 Premier Jason Kenney along with Minister of Health Jason Copping, and Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw held a press conference on the ongoing situation with COVID-19 in the province.

During the press conference Minister of Health Jason Copping announced that any Albertan aged 75 and older, First Nations, Inuit and Metis people age 65 who have had six months pass since their second vaccine shot are now eligible to receive a third dose.

According to the press release Alberta is one of the first provinces in Canada to of fer a third d ose to these ag e groups because those who are immu-

nocompromised or in seniors supportive living, are at an increased risk of hospitalization, death or other severe outcomes from COVID-19. If you have an immunocompromising condition you can find out if you are eligible for an additional dose eight weeks after your second dose at alberta.ca/vaccine.

Kenney stated that they are pleased to offer additional protection for those Albertans who are most at risk of serious illness from COVID-19.

“Getting fully vaccinated is not only important to help protect yourself and others, but is also vital to protecting our health-care system,” commented Premier Kenney. He also stated that Health officials will continue to monitor all emerging evidence on vaccine

Minister of Health Jason Copping stated that they know COVID-19 can be especially dangerous for the older populations and says that over threequarters of eligible Albertans are now fully vaccinated and encourages everyone to think of their family, friends and neighbours to get fully vaccinated as soon as possible.

Dr. Hinshaw stated that, “data shows seniors may experience waning immunity approximately six months after their second dose and that a third dose will be beneficial for our elder population to ensure they have the best protections from COVID-19 as we move through this fourth wave.” She

also commented that at this point in time the evidence does not support a need for additional doses for the general population, but that they will monitor the data and will adapt as new evidence emerges.

During the news conference further COVID-19 restrictions were put in place regarding private outdoor social gatherings. Effective October 6, outdoor private social gatherings are limited to a maximum of 20 people, with twometer physical distancing between households at all times, this is reduced from the previous limit of 200.

With in - sc hool COVID c ases on the rise, it was also announced that contact tracing will again be implemented in school cases.

Museum Treasure: Pilkieville Estates

This week’s Museum find made this reporter smile a little as the subject of the Brennan north subdivision has come up often while talking to candidates. Tucked away in the southwest corner of Vermilion is the neighbourhood affectionately referred to as “Pilkieville”, a term that many new to Vermilion assume is a nickname given to the area for some incident or event. In fact, Pilkieville’s original title was The R.A. Pilkie Estate, and was considered to be prime property off the centre of town.

The area is named after one of the first

families in the area, the Pilkies. As illustrated in the picture, a clear view to the south from the area shows the C.N. Station and Vermilion’s business section. According to the flyer, not only was Vermilion flourishing at the time, but was considered “The Railway Centre of Upper Saskatchewan Valley”, so it is possible that this flyer predates the creation of Alberta as a province.

Buyers are encouraged to “don’t delay, but buy!” and a selling feature for the lots that ranged from $150 to $250 was the two wells on the estate, providing buyers with “the purest spring water at ten feet”.
