NE Regional 4-H Horse Camp

The NE Regional 4-H Horse Camp was held at the Vermilion Ag Grounds from August 25-27. The camp provides participants the opportunity to learn and develop their horsemanship skills .

“The members had 11 classes to chose from, but English or Western Equitation was a mandatory course for all participants. The most popular choices were cattle work, followed by gymkhana and then roping. After that, it was jumping, groundwork, and drills, so we then dropped the remaining courses,” explained Melissa Wright, representative for the 3 Cities Multi club.

Each year a different region hosts the event and this year it was hosted with representatives from Vermilion River District: 3 Cities Multi club, Vermilion 4-H Light horse club and Hidden Creek. While the three-day event focuses on learning, attendees also had the chance to enjoy swimming, horse portrait painting, and an outdoor movie, providing members

the chance to meet up with fellow 4-H members and make lifelong friendships.

The camp was successful with 30 members ranging in age from 9-18 from 3 Cities Multi, Vermilion 4-H Light Horse Club, Vegreville 4-H Multi, Chipman 4-H Beef & Multi Club, Viking Equine Outriders, Wainwright-Lucky 13 4-H Light Horse Club, Wainwright 4-H Multi Club, St. Paul 4-H Multi Club, and Hidden Creek 4-H Multi Club.

Braden Bash from Sherwood Park instructed cattle working and roping for the event and Makayla Wowk from Beauvallon, AB who is very strong in roping and training young horses and President of the College Intercollegiate Rodeo Association taught cattle work and gymkhana. Carole Poche from Viking provided instruction in the reigning session. Leaders from Hidden Creek Kathy Dunsmore, Rebecca Studer and Erica Catlos supported the Western Equitation and groundwork, while Barb Fox from Marwayne supported English Equitation and jumping and Janice Saville

also from Marwayne supported the drill that performed in the closing ceremonies.

All attendees were impressed with the Vermilion Ag Society grounds throughout the event.

“We are so appreciative to the Vermilion Ag Society. They allowed us to use the grounds and the facilities such as the barns for free. This is a top notch organi-

zation and their grounds and facilities are very well maintained. It has been a pleasure to use this facility and we thank them for everything,” said Wright.

“I was very impressed with everyone and how well the camp went over the three days. Thanks to all the people who helped put this event together and how successful it was,” said Rick Allen.

Vermilion Wastewater Treatment Facility Grand Opening

The Vermilion Wastewater Treatment Facility held its grand opening on August 27, which was a celebration of the collaboration between the three levels of government involved.

The infrastructure will serve both the Town of Vermilion and the environment for many years and without the support from the Federal and Provincial governments the project would have been difficult to fund.

“We are excited to commission our state-of-the-art wastewater treatment facility, which has been funded collaboratively by the federal, provincial and municipal governments. This plant will service the needs of the Town of Vermilion while protecting our environment for many years to come,” said Vermilion Mayor, Caroline McAuley.

The preliminary Engineering for the facil-

ity finished in June of 2017 with the detailed Lakeland MP Shannon Stubbs and Transportation and other dignitaries were design beginning in August of 2018. The Honourable Rajan Sawhney-Minister of also in attendance. construction began in May of 2019 with the project cost of $20 million. Vermilion received $8,083,680 through the Clean Water Wastewater Fund (Government of Canada) and $3,400,000 from the Alberta Municipal Water Wastewater program (Government of Alberta), and according to the Government of Alberta Vermilion contributed 7.5 million, with another $1,000,000 coming from the Municipal Sustainability Initiative.

Vermilion-Lloydminster-Wainwright, MLA Garth Rowswell was in attendance and said, “Vermilion’s new wastewater plant was built on time and on budget. As part of Alberta’s Recovery Plan, this investment has created well-paying jobs and got Albertans back to work in our region. This summer, my sons, daughters in law and grandchildren came home on the farm for several days. It reminded me of times I spent during the summer with my grandparents. I remember my Baba cooking, the smell of dill and garlic, a chicken boiling with a pickling spice bag and some bay leaves, or the fragrant aroma of a pot of borscht on the stove. I remember making endless perogies and home-made egg noodles with her. Some of the perogies were potato with onion and bacon or cottage cheese, and some were filled with saskatoon berries. It happened to be that one of my sons, had brought a big bag of fresh saskatoons home to the farm, in

hopes of getting some pie. This was during our heat wave, so I would wait until late at night for the house to cool off, to bake the pies.

It was this summer that I taught my oldest granddaughter to make saskatoon perogies. We mixed up the dough and then rolled it out very thin, cut it into squares, and then we took turns rolling each square out a little thinner, before filling it. I told her about learning to make perogies with my grandmother, about all the delightful smells in my grandmother house from cooking.

We worked together, and in addition to some premade potato perogies, we added our homemade saskatoon perogies with pride to the meal. It was a rite of passage in passing the baton to the next generation.

You may wonder if saskatoon perogies are eaten as a dessert, but in my experience growing up, they were served right along all

This dough recipe made a delicious and tender perogy, that kept its integrity during the boiling. Many people cut the perogy round, and then reroll the remaining dough, but cutting them square, saves time and gives them a rustic home made look. The key to success is rolling the dough very thin, as the dough thickens up when it cooks.

Polish Perogy Dough 1/3 cup warm water 2 eggs 2 cups flour 1/2 teaspoon salt Wisk or beat the eggs and water together, add the flour and salt, and knead together into a ball. Cover the ball in the bowl with plastic wrap and allow to rest for 30 minutes – 1 hour for the gluten to relax, to make rolli-

Cook in boiling water, until the perogy floats to the top. Toss lightly in butter to keep the perogies from sticking together.

Serve hot. Toppings are any or all of the following: butter melted on, fried onions, cooked bacon bits, and sour cream.

How Programmers Bend Computers To Their Will

When the first computer was c r e a t e d i n 19 74 programs were written in binary, a system of numbers built with only ones and zeros. These simple digits were sent to the computer t h r o u g h sw i t c h e s o r p u n c h c a r d s and were enough to make computers perform basic tasks. Luckily today worrying about what's happening with the computer on a hardware level is no longer required for the modern programmer. Instead of thinking about ones and zeros people now worr y about logical arguments or “if statements”.

What in the world is an if statement?

Well, it can be as complicated or as

simple as it needs to be. For example, a simple if statement could be “if Tony pays, give him ice cream”. Fundamentally an if statement is just saying if one thing happens then the computer should do something about it. Okay, but how do you tell the computer what it should be doing in the first place? Well, that's kinda where variables come in.

To understand this next part you might want to pull out that high school algebra textbook. A variable is a word that is used to keep track of some information that could be used later. For example, a variable could be a name, or someone's age or even all the digits of PI. Using age as an example explains this best, “Age” would be the name of the variable and “20” would be the content saved in the variable. So imagine we created an if statement “when the year changes, set Age to Age + one” this

As long as you can master problemsolving as a programmer, learning complex math and fancy techniques can come later. With just basic knowledge of programming, most things can be programmed. Of course with more experience, people will find better ways to achieve the same thing. Lego Building Contest

The Vermilion Library recently hosted a Lego building competition. In order to enter, children were asked to send photos of their creations to the event organizers.

The event was deemed a huge success with over 40 pictures submitted by children before the deadline of August 24.

By sending a photo of a Lego creation children were entered into a draw with a chance to win prizes. Out of all these submissions six won prizes in the draw, including a Lego kit, deck of cards, and some summer reading.

The Vermilion library wanted to give a

huge “shout out” to Cornerstone Co-op for subsidizing the cost of one of the prizes. In addition to the Lego building contest the Vermilion Library also had other programs this summer, they had a reading program, with children taking home a summer kit with crafts, puzzles, and activities. They also had the opportunity to read for over 100 children this summer as well as host multiple outdoor activities.

And thanks to donors like their recent anonymous contributor who provided $100 to the reading program so children will continue to have the opportunity to One of the Lego creations submitted for the contest. Photo Submitted participate in these activities.

Torrent Tae Kwon-do Coming To Vermilion

Starting September 7, Torrent Tae Kwon-do Martial Arts School will be offering a class in Vermilion at Lakeland College’s Recreation Centre. One of the most practiced and well-known martial arts in the world, Tae Kwon-do is a striking art, with a focus on kicking and punching. Teaching the International style of Tae Kwon-do, 5th degree Head Instructor Mr. Chris Feeley has over 20 years of experience teaching, and is a former Canadian National Team Member, and competed with the team at the World Championships in Germany in 2019. The school successfully branched out to Paradise

Hill last year, and is looking forward to expanding Torrent’s horizons in Vermilion.

Striker Lanes Mini Summer Fun Bowlspiel

Striker Lanes Bowling Alley held a Mini Summer Fun Bowlspiel the weekend of August 20-22. Abrams usually holds the bowlspiel in June but due to the short notice it was held later. The event was considered a success as 10 teams showed up to bowl.

“Normally I do this one in the beginning of

June and I normally have about 24 teams, but I knew there were people going to be at golf tournaments, baseball tournaments and on vacation because they had their summer plans already,” explained owner Kim Abrams.

With the cash games such as this bowlspiel Abrams explained that she would normally have teams from Edmonton, Sher-

“It was a good turn out and we all shed some tears of happiness this weekend as we haven’t seen each other since the preCOVID days,” stated Abrams.

All the teams that made it to the finals would have bowled 15 games over the

weekend event. In the A division 1st went to the Klle Team with a score of 2268 allowing them to win $700, while team Gulash obtained 2nd place with a score of 2262 just 6 points short of winning or tying for 1st, they won $400. In the B division the King team won 1st with a score of 2272 and a $500 cash prize, while the McAra team came in 2nd with a score of 2090 winning $260.

Vermilion Richardson Pioneer Location Commits To Think Ice Plant Project

In a statement released on August 18, Richardson Pioneer announced a commitment of $60,000 to the Think Ice Plant Campaign. Mike Schmidt, Location Manager of the Vermilion Location stated in the announcement, “These ice surfaces are extremely important facilities for the local community and provide a recreational outlet for people of all ages. It has been amazing to see this community come together to raise capital for this project.

Vermilion Chrysler Changes Hands

The Vermilion Chrysler dealership which was owned and operated by Wes Campbell changed ownership in August of 2021. The current owner Mike Koch currently resides in Cranbrook, B.C. and began his career in cars sales over 20 plus years ago with the Dodge brand. Koch has been looking for the right opportunity ever since to bring the Dodge brand into his group of stores which currently include Nissan, Volkswagen, and Mitsubishi brands.

Koch grew up in St. Albert but moved to Cranbrook about a decade ago to start his Dealer group journey.

“I had the oppor tunity to operate Arrow Volkswagen, Cranbrook Mitsubishi, and to recently add Sun Valley Nissan to the family! When the opportunity arose to add Vermilion Dodge to the family, that was a cherry on top,” explained Koch.

Koch states that they are a dealer group that prides itself on an open and transparent business, which likes to execute their dealings where both the customer and the dealership win.

“Before, the customers were the only

ones winning and a business cannot survive under that model, where your expenses exceed your income. Profit is not a bad word,” said Koch.

He went on to explain that being a profitable, healthy business should not be a point of contention, but an opportunity to forge relationships over time of trust and sincerity.

“We understand that everything in life nowadays is getting more expensive, both goods and services. There is a fine line between what is possible and what is not, and we hope that quality service and good relationships will carry us forward! We believe in investing in the community. We love to support local groups and associations. Growing the business allows us to be able to do these kind of charitable things.” explained Koch.

While Koch did grandfather almost all of the previous staff, some changes in staffing were necessary and in the coming months, Koch plans to have the consistent new staff in place including the General Manager. Koch also explained that owning and managing a growing dealer group take up most of his time and that often it pulls his

time in many different directions, and says, “We do have a wonderful team of local employees that will remain and grow with us, and that will be available day-to-day to assist all of our wonderful

customers!”

The new owner and management team is looking forward to serving the residents of Vermilion and surrounding areas.

The essential duties of this position include working to support a variety of students with their educational programming. Experience and/or training as an Educational Assistant and experience working with children with special needs including Down Syndrome would be considered an asset.

East/West Chapter Horse Driving Event

T h e E a s t / We s t C h a p t e r o f t h e Alberta Carriage Driving Association held an event at the Ag grounds on August 29th. The day included multiple activities for the horses as they were judged on speed, looks, and form.

The day was organized by the Chapter president, Lorraine Dibben, who said “I couldn’t be happier with the turnout today, since we all had a bad few years, but today everyone is having a great time”.

n o r t hwe s ter n S a s k atc h ewa n. T h e association provides carriage driver enthusiasts hands-on seminars, driving competitions, clinics, a pleasure show and many fun activities each year.

The East / West Chapter is now in its 31st year and holds annual events such as a Clinic in May, an Open Driving show on July 10 in Vermilion, a Fun Day in August, a Fall drive in September, Sleigh rides in December, and the Cutter Rally for cancer in Lloydminster in February. This day began in 2003, to be a world action of prevention and awareness in community and country.

Stats indicate there are 3000 completed suicides a day world wide. One in every 100 deaths worldwide is the result of suicide. One million completed suicides a year worldwide. That is 1 million too many.

It can affect every one of us. Each and every suicide is devastating and has a profound impact on those around them. However, by raising awareness, reducing the stigma around suicide and encouraging well- informed action, we can reduce instances of suicide around the world. By recognizing this day set aside, raises awareness, and will promote action through proven means that will reduce the number of suicides and suicide attempts globally.

‘Creating Hope Through Action’ is a reminder that there is an alternative to suicide and aims to inspire confidence and light in all of us; that our actions, do matter how big or small, may provide hope to those who are struggling.

Preventing suicide is often possible and you are a key player in its prevention. Through action you can make a difference to someone in their darkest moments – as a member of society, as a child, a parent, as a friend, as a colleague or neighbour. We can all play a role in supporting those experiencing a suicidal crisis or those bereaved by suicide.

Suicidal thoughts are complex. The factors and causes that lead to suicide are complex and many. No single approach works for everyone. What we do know is that there are certain factors and life events that may make someone more vulnerable to suicide and mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression can also be a contributing factor. People who are suicidal may feel trapped or like a burden to their friends, family and those around them and thus feel like they are alone and have no other options. The COVID -19 Pandemic has contributed to increased feelings of isolation and vulnerability.

By crating hope through action, we can signal to people experiencing suicidal thought that there is hope and that we care and want to support them.

REACH IN- You can help give hope by showing that you care. All of us can play a role, no matter how small.

We may never know what we do that makes a difference.

We all can reach in and ask somebody. You do not need to tell them what to do or have solutions, but simply making the time and space to listen to someone about their experiences of distress and suicidal thoughts can help. Small talk can save lives and create a sense of connection and hope in somebody who may be struggling.

ENCOURAGE UNDERSTANDING –Stigma is a main barrier to help-seeking. Changing the narrative around suicide through the promotion of hope can create a more compassionate society where those in need feel more comfortable in coming forward to seek help. We can all do something to live in a world where suicide is recognised and we can all do something to help prevent it.

SHARE EXPEREINCES – The insights and stories of people with a lived experience of suicide .

Personal stories of an individual’s experiences of significant emotional distress, suicidal thoughts or attempt, and their experiences of recovery can inspire hope in others that they too can move through the period of distress or crisis and their insights can help others understand what it means to feel suicidal and how they can support others.

In sharing the person sharing their story knows how to do so in a way that is safe for them and for those who hear their story. For individuals sharing experiences of being bereaved through suicide and how they came to live their ‘new normal,” can help others experiencing suicidal loss make sense of the devastation of suicide and believe they will be able to live through and with the loss.

By encouraging understanding, reaching in and sharing experiences, we want to give people the confidence to take action. To prevent suicide requires us to become a beacon of light to those in pain.
