The Ice Plant Has Arrived

It was a slow moving journey, taking many months to accomplish. On August 5, one of the final steps in the construction of a new ice plant for the Vermilion Stadium and Arena happened. The actual “ice plant” arrived in Vermilion. Taking roughly 8.5 hours to get to town, the plant left Edmonton around 3 a.m. and arrived in Vermilion at noon. Under hot, 28 degree skies, Mammoet Crane Service workers quickly took to placing the plant in its new home on the North Side of the building. By 12:50

p.m. the plant was unloaded, moved and settled onto the freshly poured cement pad it will now call home. Kevin Lucas, Director of Community Services for the Town of Vermilion was very excited about the delivery of the plant, and was one of many people who eagerly waited for its arrival.

“A great day for Vermilion ice users!

Words cannot capture the commitment made by the Town of Vermilion and the County of Vermilion River councils. This support combined with individual and group donations have brought the ice plant project to the final stages. So proud!” said Lucas.

Caroline McAuley, Mayor for the Town of Vermilion was delighted with the arrival of the new Ice Plant and commented that it was a very exciting day for Vermilion and for everyone who has worked so hard to make the new ice plant a reality.

“We will have ice!!! Today is a very exciting day as we bring our new ice plant into Vermilion! With all things going smoothly we plan to see this running the stadium, arena and curling rink by September. This has been a real community partnership with the town, county, and many user groups, community organizations and individuals

pulling together to make this happen, in true Vermilion style,” exclaimed Mayor McAuley.

Mayor McAuley also stated that the previous 60-year-old ice plant was a hazard as it reached the end of its life and that the new ice plant will leave less of a carbon footprint.

“The new plant will be safer, more efficient and cost effective. It will use less water, power and ammonia and sits outside of the current facility. This has been a $2 million investment for our town and it was a long couple of years getting there but it will be very beneficial to all of us” said Mayor McAuley.

Old School Cheesery Coming To Town

Thanks in part to an initiative spearheaded by Peavey Industries, The Old School Cheesery will soon be calling the Town of Vermilion home. In an effort to support and enhance the communities their stores are in, Peavey Industries, the parent company of Mainstreet Hardware, Peavey Mart, and ACE Hardware Stores, approached local communities looking to see what members felt their community’s economic needs and wants were. They began speaking to community members here in Vermilion in September of 2020 and Patrick Dupuis, owner of the cheesery, was in attendance. It was suggested at that meeting that Peavey work with him and

his company as they need to grow and the cheesery being in town would be a huge step for the community. This led to Vermilion becoming one of the first pilot projects of the initiative and helped in the creation of the Vermilion Community Development Cooperative (VCDC), a group of 20 local business and community members whose goal is to enhance local economic development.

Peavey Industries contributes up to $150,000 on a matching basis (subject to various allowable exemptions and co-operative rules) to the project. The financial contribution and bringing the Alberta Community Cooperative Association (ACCA) is Peavey’s way of building momentum, credibility and legitimacy to the co-op.

Doug Anderson, President and CEO of Peavey Industries stated this week “We are rooted in our communities and continuously seek to further strengthen our connection with our valued customers, who we see and serve every day in our stores across the country. It ’s ras p berr y season. These little prairie gems are full of flavour, and even more so this year, as it has been so dr y. We have a raspberr y patch that has been very prolific. Dozens of containers of raspberry freezer jam have been made, and given away to family. I recently enjoyed all my family, coming home, and large amounts of raspberries being ready. The timing was perfect for them to help eat them.

I made a raspberr y cake, modeled after my fruit cocktail recipe, and to my surprise it worked out beautifully, and was an instant hit. I ended up making

this cake three times, by family request in 5 days, with the last pan being a double batch in a 9 x 13-inch pan. This is a moist, flavor filled cake that is sure to please.

Raspberries are a great source of vitamin C which is a power ful antioxidant that strengthens the immune system. Raspberries contain many b e n ef i c i a l a nt i ox i d a nt s , v i t a m i n s , minerals and flavonoids. Raspberries are very low in sugar, with 1 cup having only 5 grams of sugar. Raspberries contain compounds that help to protect from heart disease, cancer, arthritis, obesity and diabetes. In a study, at the Illinois Institute of Technology they found that eating 2 cups of raspberries a day reduced the amount of insulin needed and produced better

When the Canadian National Railway was built through, and with the decision to make that spot on the prairie the divisional headquarters of the railway, Vermilion sprang to life.

In almost no time at all, the community had two streets, four blocks long and was quickly growing. In September, the land was not even surveyed, but by the end of November, it was prospering. George Gall, the manger

for Canada Lumberman in Alber ta and British Columbia would state, quote: “ T h e d e c i s i o n of t h e C a n ad i a n Northern Railway to make a divisional point in that locality having become known, numbers of people camped on the ground near the siding awaiting the sur veying of a townsite. As soon as the surveyors had completed their labors a scramble was made for lots and building operations began with a rush.”

By Nov. 1, a temporary station was built, followed by the roundhouse that would be needed. The Canadian Bank of Commerce soon arrived and built a one-story permanent building. By the end of November, there were already over 30 buildings in the community, including two first-class livery stables filled with horses, a two-storey drug-

blood sugar control. Raspberries, with their powerful antioxidants, boost brain health and memory, and help sweep out unhealthy toxic proteins in the brain. Another amazing benefit is that raspberries are a very high fiber food, with a whopping 8 grams of fiber per cup. Imagine have a cake that tastes so amazing, yet it is filled with so many healthy benefits.

Raspberry Cake 1 1/2 cup flour – unbleached 3/4 cup sugar 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup melted butter 1 egg 1 teaspoon vanilla 3/4 cup milk 2 cups fresh raspberries.

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. In a mixing bowl combine the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Stir the dry ingredients to blend. In a small bowl combine the milk, vanilla and butter and microwave to melt the butter, be sure the mixture is warm and not hot and stir in the egg. To the bowl of dry ingredients add the butter mixture and stir to combine, do not over stir. Add the fresh raspberries and stir to combine. Do not over stir or you cake will be tough. Pour into a 9 x 9-inch cake pan and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool and ice with a vanilla butter cream icing, and ser ve with a side or garnish of raspberries. It is also good to add ice cream or whipped cream when serving.

Store cake in the refrigerator.

store and two lumber yards. A water tower was built to supply water for the railway which used steam power at the time.

By 1906, Vermilion was a village and later that same year, it became a town.

One of the first businesses to operate in the community was also a brick factory, which opened in early 1906.

It used the red clay found in the river valley and it is from that clay that the name Vermilion would be applied to the community. The brick factory is long gone, having closed in 1914 but if you look around the community today, you can still see several buildings that were built with the brick from that factory, early in the history of Vermilion during its booming years.

What This Dolphin Means For The Future Of Theme Parks

Theme parks have used animatronics for their attractions for decades, and for the most part, they have been successful at doing what they are designed to do. However, a change is coming to the way animatronics are perceived.

The days of stiff unrealistic robots in theme parks are almost at their end. A company that has specialized in highquality realistic animatronics in Hollywood has since branched out into a new industry. Edge Innovations hope to offer theme parks new options to

create a unique and memorable experience.

Beginning with their animatronic dolphin, which is capable of swimming and realistically interacting with guests. Edge Innovations plan to offer these aquatic robots to places like SeaWorld, which are already having problems with people protesting their use of live animals. Edge innovations hope to create a sea world where all the animals are indistinguishable robot replicas capable of putting on shows and entertaining the crowds in a way that the real thing could never live up to. As an animal can get tired, hungry, or sad about the circumstances in

which it lives, a robot would not even be capable of caring, and thus it could work continuously.

C u r r e n t l y, t h e y p l a n t o o f f e r SeaWorld and other aquatic parks the opportunity to replace some of their live animals with robots. This is something that would please many people who have been against captive whales a n d d o l p h i n s fo r ye ar s . W i t h t h i s change, SeaWorld will be able to put on its famous whale show once more, this time with robotic performers.

Edge innovations have no plans to stop their work and are capable of offering unique experiences that are truly not possible to recreate. One example is their plan to revive longextinct dinosaur species by creating

robotic doppelgangers. Even allowing these robots to roam freely in an environment where people can come to see the prehistoric beasts as they once were. Essentially Edge robotics wants to work with amusement parks like universal studios to create a robotic Jurassic park. They will be able to have these animatronics roaming free within enclosures or even have them put on a show by allowing the robots to ‘escape’ their cells and recreate the ending of the original Jurassic Park film. Of course, these robots won’t be eating people as the dinosaurs in the movie do. They are much more likely to give a good scare than put anyone in danger as they are remote-controlled by professionals behind the scenes.

Alberta Open Farm Days

August 14- 15 will mark the 9th annual Alberta Open Farm Days. Open Farm Days started in the Maritimes and have taken place for over 10 years. This year, the Alberta Open Farm Days two-day event is showcasing over 100 farms, ranches and Ag tourism operators throughout the province which provides Albertans and visitors the opportunity to experience farms and to understand and explore where their food comes from. It gives attendees a backstage pass to meet farmers, taste local foods direct from the producer and to experience Agricultural tourism. It also gives attendees the opportunity to hear local stories, attend on-farm demonstrations and purchase locally grown, crafted and produced products from the owners.

While Open Farm Days does mean the sites are open to the public it is asked for

attendees not to show up without scheduling their visit prior to going. By scheduling a visit it provides the farmers and producers the opportunity to know who is coming and how many so they can plan their day and prepare for the number of guests they are expecting. By scheduling your visit it also helps with COVID contact tracing if the necessity arises.

A few tips to keep in mind when planning your visit to the open farms: make sure you bring money, some participating farms and sites maybe offering paid activities or you may see some fresh products you would like to purchase (make sure to bring a cooler) or a lunch may be offered that you could purchase. While it is always nice to bring family pets on day or weekend trips no pets will be allowed to enter the farms, so it is best to leave them with family or board them for the day/weekend.

A couple of other very important health

and safety tips to remember are that these farms are working farms so always pay strict attention to the signs and rules and do not wander off from the approved areas on each farm. Be prepared for any type of weather, as we all know, Alberta weather can be unpredictable and remember to bring bug spray and appropriate footwear.

Another great tip is to make sure you have your phones and cameras charged so you can take photos of your visits; if you decide to post them use the #ABFarmDays.

Drought-Stricken Livestock Producers Will Be Eligible For Financial Relief

Drought-stricken livestock producers will be eligible for millions of dollars in financial relief and will benefit from new rangeland initiatives that will improve access to water grazing.

The Government of Alberta is making $136 million available under the AgriRecovery program, a joint program between the governments of Alberta and Canada, and has asked the federal government to

provide an additional $204 million for a total relief package of $340 million.

The federal government is currently evaluating this request and earlier today announced $100 million in immediate relief for Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, British Columbia and Alberta. Programming costs are split 60-40 between the provincial and federal governments.

In addition, Alberta Environment and Parks has approved several temporary changes to grazing and water regulations to open new sources of feed for livestock.

They have endured an exceptionally difficult year because of drought conditions and I am pleased that we are able to provide this relief and support to help them get through this time. These hard-working Albertans are always there for us. We owe it to them to be there when they need us.”

Devin Dreeshen, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry commented, “We’re supporting our livestock sector during this drought. We secured a commitment from Ottawa to initiate an AgriRecovery program, and now we’re calling on them to fully cover their share of a $340-million program. Agriculture built Alberta and we will ensure our agriculture sector has a level playing field so it can continue to feed Alberta families, and families around the world.”

Jason Nixon, Minister of Environment and Parks said, "Farmers and ranchers are facing a prolonged dry, hot growing season, which has impacted access to water and feed for livestock producers.

Alberta’s government is committed to providing essential supports for farmers and ranchers across the province that

have been affected by severe drought conditions.”

Nate Horner, Associate Minister of Rural Economic Development added, “The hard work and resiliency of Alberta’s livestock producers ensure that Alberta families continue to have access to high-quality locally sourced food.

After being impacted by extreme dry conditions, this new AgriRecovery relief funding will provide producers with the support they need to get through these challenging times.”

AgriRecovery falls under the joint federal-provincial Canadian Agricultural Par tnership. It is designed to cover extraordinary costs not covered by existing business risk management programs, such as those incurred due to extreme drought conditions or other natural disasters.

If approved, the total amount would be $340 million split 60-40 between the federal and provincial governments.

Alberta’s contribution is $136 million.

Under a new AgriRecovery program, it will provide an immediate payment of $94 per head to help cover feed and water access costs for breeding females across the province.

Taking a receipt-based approach, a second payment of $106 per head will be allocated later in the year, for a total of $200. This will help level the playing field against a U.S. feed subsidy and maintain our livestock herds in Alberta.

Rangeland initiatives Alberta Environment and Parks will now accept applications from existing grazing disposition holders, including leases, licences and permits, with additional grazing capacity to allow livestock from other producers who are in need of additional feed. Grazing disposition holders are encouraged to work with their neighbours and community to support each other where they can. Applications for temporary grazing or haying are also available on vacant public lands. Alberta Environment and Parks will also permit grazers in the forest reserve to extend the time for grazing where there is sufficient forage to do so.

Minister Nixon has signed off on the creation of a new temporary streamlined program to allow the quick provision of water to livestock and poultry producers in drought areas.

Environment and Parks agrologists are available to meet with producers and to help provide more region-specific information about available support and best management practices, including how they can access potential water and feed sources.

Livestock producers interested in looking at these measures are encouraged to reach out to their local agrologist.

Producers can call 310-FARM (3276) to be connected with a local agrologist and discuss options to support them during these tough drought conditions.

• To date, Alberta’s government has offered the following supports to help farmers and ranchers through extreme drought conditions: ºº The governments of Canada and Alberta, through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, recently doubled the low yield threshold to encourage Alberta grain farmers to divert additional cereal or pulse crops to be salvaged for livestock feed. ºº A l b e r t a ’ s W a t e r P u m p i n g Program provides assistance to producers in securing adequate water supplies for domestic, livestock or agricultural purposes. ºº Alberta announced a 20 per cent reduction in premium costs for crop, pasture and forage insurance earlier this year, which protects against weather-related production loss. This passed $70 million in savings back to farmers and led 400 additional farmers and ranchers to enrol, almost 1,400 farmers and ranchers to increase their level of coverage, and almost 230 clients to re-enroll after cancelling their insurance in 2020 or prior years. ºº Alberta’s Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC) hired an additional 21 adjustment team members in December 2020 and April 2021, bringing the total number of active adjustment team members to 119. The government has advised crop adjusters to be flexible and complete early assessments to convert crops to livestock feed. ºº The federal Livestock Tax Deferral allows farmers who sell part of their breeding herd due to drought or flooding in prescribed drought or flood regions to defer a portion of sale proceeds to the following year.

FCC Supports Western Canadian Producers Impacted By Hot, Dry Weather

Regina, Saskatchewan, July 20, 2021 – Farm Credit Canada (FCC) is offering a customer support program to farmers and ranchers across western Canada who are facing production challenges due to adverse growing conditions.

Many par ts of Western Canada haven’t received any significant rainfall through the spring and summer

months. Extreme heat and dry weather have already reduced the potential yield of many crops. The unfavourable weather has also stifled pastures and hay production in many areas.

“We are watching the weather situation very closely and are talking to customers daily,” said Michael Hoffort, FCC President and CEO. “We already know that several ranchers are feeling the impact, while grain and oilseed producers are watching

their crops deteriorate in the fields,” he said. “If these conditions persist, many operations could face cash flow challenges, so we want our customers to know we’re ready to support them and find solutions.”

“Our customers work hard to grow high- qualit y food for consumers at home and abroad, so they deserve our support when facing circumstances beyond their control,” Hoffort added.

FCC will work with customers to come up with solutions for their operations and will consider additional short term credit options, deferral of principal payments and/or other loan payment schedule amendments to reduce financial pressures on those impacted by unfavourable weather.

“Producers across Western Canada are doing their best during difficult circumstances. Our government is work ing ver y c losely with FCC, provincial partners and stakeholders to respond as quickly as possible to the drought in Western Canada,” said Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. “During these challenging times, Farm Credit Canada is rolling out their customer support program to help farmers with solutions that address their unique financial challenges.”

Customers in Western Canada are encouraged to contact their FCC relationship manager sooner rather than later to allow for the most flexibility in

discussing options available to them.

Customers can do this by contacting their local office or the FCC Customer Service Centre at 1-888-332-3301.

Lakeland College’s Ag Research Receives $1 Million Federal Investment

Lakeland College Submitted

(Vermilion, Alta.) Lakeland College will receive $1 million in federal research infrastructure funding through the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) in support of smart agriculture technology.

The CFI’s College-Industry Innovation Fund investment will support the development of Lakeland’s new Agriculture Technology Centre, the central repository for all data collected on the Student-Managed Farm – Powered by New Holland (SMF) at the Vermilion campus.

“With the CFI’s support, we’ll continue to move forward with establishing our new Agriculture Technology Centre as the ‘nerve centre’ for the research, collection and analysis of data collected from new ag technologies we use on our SMF. We are very fortunate to receive this funding and are excited for how it will enable our research team to support producers and agriculture companies to increase productivity, efficiency, quality and sustainability of livestock and crop production,” says Michael Crowe, Lakeland’s vice president of academic and applied research.

The CFI funding will go towards the construction of a new Livestock Reproductive Technology Laboratory and on-farm connectivity infrastructure, enabling the SMF to become a fully connected, data-driven, commercial-scale smart farm. Lakeland’s agriculture technology and equipment will grow to include the following inventory thanks to the CFI investment: • specialized sensors and monitoring

technology • livestock reproductive equipment • emission detection equipment for livestock • mobile imagery for phenotypic trait capture in cattle • optical spot-spraying technology for crops; and • an unmanned aerial vehicle (drone) fitted with two multispectral cameras for crops and livestock research applications.

“The CFI’s investment champions Lakeland’s innovation and producer-led research priorities,” says Dr. Alice Wainwright-Stewart, president and CEO of Lakeland. “We look forward to opening the Agriculture Technology Centre – an advanced space for our research team to produce results of value for commercial agriculture producers. Our students will

also benefit, gaining the skills required for their future careers in a transforming sector.”

Slated to officially open this fall, the Agriculture Technology Centre project is valued at $2.6 million. It will serve as the home for Lakeland’s new degree in agriculture technology, which launches in September.

Smart agriculture integrates technologies such as automation, robotics, artificial intelligence, remote sensing, hyperspectral imaging and blockchain applications into the agricultural product supply chain allowing seamless and timely data collection and interpretation. Prior to adoption, ag technologies require development, rigorous field testing at the commercial scale and verification of return on investment for producers.

Lakeland currently has 52 active livestock and crop research projects underway.

A total of $12.8 million worth of CFI funding

through the College-Industry Innovation Fund was awarded to 15 colleges, cégeps and polytechnics across the country, as announced by the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, minister of innovation, science and industry on July 26. An additional $3,861,072 was awarded under the Infrastructure Operating Fund.

It can save you time and money Not tilling every year saves money in labour and fuel. It also reduces the amount of wear and tear on your equipment.

It promotes healthier soil Zero-till farming leaves soil organisms that are essential for grow th u n d i s tur b e d, w h i c h h e l p s t h e s o il retain vital nutrients.

It causes less soil compaction

Tilling requires heavy equipment to repeatedly drive over the soil, causing it to compact. This can increase flooding and prevent roots from get ting nutrients, water and air. With zero-till farming, this isn’t an issue.

It reduces soil erosion Zero-till farming involves leaving unharvested crops on the field at the end of the season instead of working them into the soil, which helps reduce soil erosion.

Alberta Amputee Expresses Gratitude As War Amps Key Tag Service Marks 75th Anniversary

ALBERTA – AUGUST 3, 2021 – This year, The War Amps Key Tag Service is celebrating 75 years of returning lost keys to their owners.

Donations to the Key Tag Service provide vital support to amputees across the country including Chris Koch, of Calgary, Alberta.

Chris was born a quadruple amputee and grew up with The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program, which provides financial assistance for artificial limbs and adaptive devices, as well as peer support.

“The support The War Amps has provided me is immeasurable and impossible to put into words,” says Chris. “From emotional and

moral support, to simply just knowing I wasn't the only one dealing with some of the challenges that come with being an amputee.

They gave me the confidence to set my sights high and have helped me to be the person I am today.”

The Key Tag Service was launched in 1946 so that returning war amputee veterans could not only work for competitive wages, but also provide a service to Canadians that would generate funds for the Association’s many programs. The service continues to employ amputees and people with disabilities and has returned more than 1.5 million sets of lost keys to their owners.

Acceleware’s Marwayne RF XL Pilot On Track

Acceleware, an innovator of cleantech oil and gas technologies announced that it has secured two new partners and a test site for its commercial scale pilot of the Company’s transformative RF XL clean technology (the “Project”). The Pilot project will farm-in to Broadview’s Marwayne asset near Lloydminster in the Cold Lake Oil Sands area and Broadview and Cenovus Energy will be added as consortium partners for the Project.

The agreement with Broadview grants Acceleware certain access rights to the Marwayne asset to complete the Project and provide the terms for future RF XL purchases by Broadview from Acceleware (the “Broadview Partnership”). With favourable operating conditions that support accelerated timelines, Broadview’s Marwayne asset is expected to be highly suitable for the RF XL commercial-scale test — offering numerous attractive features including all-weather access, existing roads and well sites, and close proximity to key services and trades. Acceleware believes that testing at Marwayne offers the most compelling heavy oil operating environment with an expedited path to commercialization of Acceleware’s RF XL clean technology.

Key anticipated benefits of the Broadview Partnership includes immediate access to a viable and high-quality test site targeting the GP formation anywhere within the Marwayne asset, an option to conduct a subsequent test at a second location within the Marwayne asset at any time within five years of the spud date of Acceleware’s first test wells, and ownership and economic benefit from all petroleum substances produced in both the first and second tests subject to a gross overriding royalty of up to 7.5% payable to Broadview.

“We are extremely pleased with the Broadview Partnership, which enables Acceleware to benefit from Broadview’s experience and agility while being able to access an optimal test site at Marwayne” said Geoff Clark, CEO of Acceleware.

“The extensive engineering and de-risking work that we have completed over the past two years will be instrumental in validating the performance and potential of our RF XL clean technology. We greatly appreciate the continued support of our funding partners, SDTC and ERA, as we continue to advance commercialization of this clean-tech innovation.”

and the environment in opening up a new era of growth within the heavy oil sector,” said John Festival, Broadview’s CEO. “Broadview is excited to have a front row seat at the Marwayne test site where we will support Acceleware’s efforts to validate their RF XL technology. Over the past 30+ years, Broadview’s personnel have trialed and closely monitored a number of different heavy oil recovery technologies. Broadview recognizes Acceleware’s RF XL technology as one of the biggest potential game-changers in heavy oil and bitumen recovery since SAGD (steam assisted gravity drainage) was commercialized over 20 years ago.”

The agreement with Cenovus will see the company provide funding of up to $2 million and technical expertise in support of the Pilot under the terms of an agreement with Acceleware. In exchange for the funding, Cenovus will be able to provide input into Pilot designs and test specifications prior to completion, and will receive, along with the other Pilot participants, exclusive access to the full set of detailed technical data and test results for one year following completion of the Pilot. Acceleware has granted Cenovus prioritized rights to host a subsequent test of Acceleware’s RF XL technology, preferred pricing on pre-commercial products, and preferred access to RF XL products over operators who do not participate in the Pilot.

“Getting to a low-carbon energy future is complex and will require a multitude of solutions, a realization that this will be a transition over time, and a lot of players who are willing to actively participate. We are very pleased that Cenovus is coming on board as a third major oil sands partner in our Marwayne RF XL commercial pilot – particularly in light of their participation in the recently announced Oil Sands Pathways to Net Zero collaborative initiative,” said Geoff Clark, CEO of Acceleware. “While carbon capture technologies are a terrific and necessary innovation, it’s heartening to also see support for commercialization efforts for next generation technologies such as ours – one that is capable of near zero scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions.”

Cenovus joins two other major oil sands companies who have each agreed to provide technical assistance and up to $2 million in funding for the Pilot. In aggregate, Acceleware’s oil sands partners represent well over one million barrels of oil sands and heavy oil production per day. Acceleware has also received commitments for a total of $15.5 million in funding from Sustainable Development Technology Canada, Emissions Reduc-

tion Alberta, and Alberta Innovates.

Although situated within the Cold Lake Oil Sands region, the reservoir at the test site is classified as a heavy oil deposit and oil produced from the area has lower viscosity than a typical oil sands reservoir. As such, the results gleaned from the Project are expected to be more analogous to, and relevant for, conventional heavy oil operators in Alberta and Saskatchewan as well as operators developing heavy oil deposits in the Middle East, California, and Latin America. In addition, the depth of this test site is anticipated to allow Acceleware to demonstrate that the RF XL clean technology can be successfully deployed to heat reservoirs at depths consistent with both heavy oil and oil sands reservoirs.

The Company believes that positive test results from the reservoir at Marwayne will open up a much larger addressable market for its RF XL clean technology upon commercialization, including the potential to reinvigorate the many CHOPs fields that have been shut-in and neglected in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

The Marwayne site was cleared in early 2021, and barring unforeseen delays, construction at the site is scheduled to be complete in Q3 2021, with power up and heating following shortly thereafter. While the initial heating phase is planned for approximately six months, this period may be extended to allow Acceleware to capture additional information on the efficiency and operation of the technology.

RF XL is Acceleware’s patented and patent-pending Radio Frequency Heating technology, designed to improve the extraction of heavy oil and bitumen, with the possibility of saving significant production costs. When applied, RF XL has the potential to reduce both capital and operating costs, while offering significant environmental benefits, which include: (a) immediateGHG emission reductions; (b) a substantial decrease in land use; (c) the elimination of external water use; (d) no requirement for solvents; and (e) no need for water treatment facilities or tailings ponds. The Company believes that its RF XL Heating technology, as an electrically-driven process, can provide a clear pathway to zero-GHG production of heavy oil and oil sands and provide optimal alignment with industry and government goals to recognize innovation as a meaningful solution in the oil and gas industry’s overall emission reduction plans. Chugging Across The Prairie: Westman Family Reunion 2021 Heather MacMillan Submitted

Every five years for 70 years, Westman family members convene in either Alberta or Saskatchewan to visit, eat and laugh with their cousins.

The first reunion was held in Kenaston, SK in 1951 with matriarch Myrtle Westman (center with corsage) and her

11 of 12 children in attendance. Myrtle and her husband Phil settled in Kenaston around 1915 originally and then around 1934 Myrtle married Frank Davies of Dewberry/Vermilion where she raised her four youngest children - Walden and Jack Westman, Thelma Hunter & Phyllis Webb, who raised their families in the area.

The next reunion was hosted in Vermilion in 1971 and started the tradition of alternating locations every five years.

This year marks the 7th Westman Reunion hosted in Vermilion and 12th overall.

Reaching numbers close to 350 relatives some years, a smaller family crowd

of 150 reunited this year due to shortened planning time.

Activities included horseshoes, card playing, and music, as well as connecting the current generation to their roots with a complete family tree on display.

In five years, the Family treks back to Kenaston and in 2031, Vermilion once again plays host.
