Vermilion’s Alison Jackson Has Dream Come True

Jackson (32) has been back in Canada since April after her race with the Liv Racing trade team at Fleche Wallonne and has spent the past few months in the Vancouver area which will help her acclimate to the hot, humid weather in Toyko.

“We had some 44 C days and it’s mostly just right around 30 C to 32 C so basically, that’s on par with what Japan has. It might be a little more humid in Tokyo than here but yeah, I think that actually I will be fine in the heat. I’ve been doing all my training in the middle of the day here,” said Jackson.

According to Jackson’s sister, Alison has always been very active in the sport

“Her entire family is so proud of her accomplishment as this has been a lifelong dream of hers. We wish we could be there in person to cheer her on but due to COVID no spectators are able to attend the Olympics,” said Alison’s sister Nicole.

Jackson will be joining her teammates Leah Kirchmann and Karol Ann Canuel in Tokyo, Japan on the Canadian Olympic Womens Cycling Road Team. Jackson was the first alternate for the team and due to a last-minute change, Canada received the third spot for the Womens Road Race after another nation pulled out.

“I’m basically just in shock! I think Canada found out about being able to get another spot just hours before they contacted me.

You never hope that anyone gets injured.

But basically, that was the only possibility I thought that I would have in order to go.

And so this is just like nothing I could have imagined that would happen. I think it’s a very special circumstance,” stated Jackson.

Last week I had a very sweet senior lady stop by the office with a letter that she wished to publish as a letter to the Editor, however, she did not want to have her name published and unfortunately, we cannot publish anonymous letters to the Editors. After chatting with the lady for a while and reading the letter she presented to me, I quickly discovered the severity of the situation

in the early morning hours, only to find her granddaughter was not there. This situation could have turned sideways quickly and the grandmother could have been attacked or worse killed. The other possibility is that the perpetrators could have been luring her away from her house to break-in.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone, especially the seniors of our communities to never take a call blindly and leave your house to go to an empty parking lot or any other location. If you are concerned you can always call

she encountered. With that said I want to take the time to advise residents of what can be referred to as the Grandparent Scam. This scam can happen in several different scenarios where a grandparent is called supposedly by a grandchild in a frantic state claiming to be in trouble, and is usually used to defraud the grandparent of money. In this case, however, the caller impersonating her granddaughter lured the grandma to an empty parking lot by pleading that she needed her grandma to pick her up. As I write this, it has been very smoky for several days, as the wind brings us the smoke from British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan wild fires. The crops are desperate for rain, and constant prayer for rain is needed for both the crops and to put out the wild fires. The good news is that there are lots of get togethers happening with families, now that Covid restrictions are lifted. This is coinciding with new potatoes being ready in the garden.

There is nothing like a potato salad made with fresh dill and new potatoes, fresh out of the garden. Fresh new potatoes from the garden make the best potato salad.

If you don’t have a garden, you can get new potatoes at the farmers market or at

some grocery stores. Red potatoes have a nice firm texture for potato salad. If the potatoes are new, you do not need to peel them, only scrub them with a vegetable brush. Potatoes can be boiled with the peel either on or off for salad. Retaining the potato peel will provide more nutrients, as the peel and the area just below the skin are the highest in nutrients. The potato peel on store bought potatoes should be removed, as they are usually sprayed with a chemical to prevent them from sprouting. Do not over boil the potatoes or your salad will be mushy. Cold potatoes have a lower glycemic index than hot potatoes and do not spike blood sugar the same as hot potatoes. Cold potatoes also have the effect of lowering triglycerides, while hot potatoes raise them. Surprisingly, when selecting eggs, very fresh eggs are not the best, as they will be too difficult to peel. Older eggs will peel much

easier. To hard boil eggs with an electric stove place eggs in a pot of water, with 1 tablespoon vinegar and 1/2 teaspoon salt, and bring to boil. When the water has come to a boil, shut the heat off and cover the pot, leaving the eggs in the pot for 15 minutes. Cool the eggs by running cold water on them before you peel them. If the eggs are left to cool in the hot water the yolks will become blacken around the outer edge. This is caused by a reaction between the sulfur and iron in the egg and it does not affect the eat ability, but it is not very pretty for your salad. This recipe can be cut in half or doubled to suit your needs. This year, our salad will taste extra good, because we can share it with those we love, that we have not been allowed to see.

Potato Salad (8 servings) 8 cups cooked, cooled and cubed Potatoes

Boil, cool and peel the eggs. Cut the potatoes and eggs into cubes. Stir in the mayonnaise, dill, onion, salt and pepper. Taste to see if you need more mayonnaise, salt or pepper. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Potato salad can be garnished with paprika.

Variations include omitting the radish and adding 1/2 - 1 cup any of the following: radish, diced celery, cooked peas, apple, cooked beet, and cooked corn. Some cooks like to stir a little mustard into the dressing, for additional flavor and color.

To d ay, Ve r m i l ion Provincial Park is one of the most beautiful provincial parks in the area, and a great place to spend a summer day. This year, the park turns 51, specifically on July 22 so I thought it would be interesting to look back on the day that the park officially opened.

The Vermilion Lake Park opened on July 22, 1960 when 4,000 people came out in 900 cars for the big day. While there were two heavy showers in the afternoon, that did not deter those who came out for

the event, ready to enjoy the many picnic spots available in the park. It wasn’t just people of the area who went out to enjoy the day and the park opening.

Dan Campbell, the director of the Alber ta Tourist Bureau spoke and suggested that July 22 be known as Apple Pie Day from now on in Vermilion Park. He suggested that Vermilion housewives could make apple pie and give it to a tourist who was staying in the park on that day each year.

Other speakers included C.J. McCormick, the vice president of the Chamber of Commerce, Vermilion Mayor Melvin Hill, Ashley Cooper, the MLA for the area and Ken Urquhart, who was part of the Vermilion Parks Committee. All of these

individuals spoke at the opening of the Ehx on all podcast platforms or at www. park. canadaehx.ca Next up was Len MacDonald and his choir of eight who sang and played instruments to entertain the park visitors. The day also included a water safety display in the swim area, two ladies’ fastball games and a horseshoe tournament.

It’s a fascinating idea, and surely there are multiple ways it could be done, a massive rotor like a helicopter, or even use some sci-fi hover wheels like in Back to the Future. The idea of what a flying car could be has been featured in media such as novels and films countless times over the last few decades. However, these dreams may be more than just fantasies and could become reality sooner than people realize.

Recently a flying car created by the company Klein Vision achieved something no other flying automotive has before, an intercity flight. The flight took about 35 minutes from take-off to landing and once grounded only took a few minutes to transform the vehicle back into a road-ready machine. The Klein flying car features wings that automati- Klein Vision AirCar.

In the future, we could see a sky full of flying cars and services like uber adopt the technology bringing rideshare options as well. It could be years though still before flying cars become anywhere near mainstream in their adoption. Only time will tell how this new technology shakes up the industry.

Federal And Provincial Governments Support Alberta Hemp Alliance

In a press release on July 7, Alberta Agriculture announced that in an effort to support the Alberta Hemp Alliance (AHA) a one-time grant from both the federal and provincial governments is being given to establish a provincial industr y association for hemp processing with more than $300,000 over two years (2021-2023) through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership.

The Alberta Hemp Alliance (AHA) is a

non-profit association of stakeholders collaborating to create a strong, competitive and diversified hemp industry in Alberta. AHA promotes market development and provides networking, tools and resources for Alberta hemp producers and processors.This grant will help the AHA fulfil its mandate as the provincial association for the hemp industry in Alberta. The intention is for the association to be self-sustainable beyond its first years of operation by creating revenue streams from membership fees, an

In the past three years, the Canadian Agricultural Partnership has also provided more than $950,000 in grants to BioComposites Group Inc. (BCG) to support industry growth in the hemp fibre market in Alberta. The company has plans to build a new facility to decorticate hemp and flax, and to manufacture insulation and green building products. The project will create 100 full time jobs, with a $30 million investment, and

utilize straw currently wasted by farmers as well as employ crop diversification.

(Vermilion, Alta.) Students interested in a rewarding career as a registered veterinary technologist will have more options this fall to pursue their goals with Lakeland College.

Lakeland’s School of Agricultural Sciences is expanding its animal health technology (AHT) program to include a blended delivery model that enables students to complete their lectures online and their labs on campus.

Starting this October, blended AHT students will participate in lectures and non-lab course work online. They will practice their practical skills in Lakeland’s Animal Health Clinic at the Vermilion campus, completing five comprehensive lab residencies and two practicums during the two-year program.

“With the support of our advisory committee, we created a blended AHT option to help meet the need for qualified veterinary technologists within the animal health industry. Our blended

AHT students will participate in full-time, online learning and put theory into action in our state-of-the-art Animal Health Clinic,” says Geoff Brown, dean of agricultural sciences and environmental sciences. “We’re excited to provide a second program option for students who’re eager to provide life-saving care in the veterinary field.”

According to the Government of Alberta, there is a veterinary technologist shortage in the province. In the last two years, 75 per cent of employers recruited for veterinary technologist positions (alis.alberta.ca).

Taught by experienced veterinarians and vet tech professionals, blended AHT students will complete their online lectures and assignments, exams and classroom discussions through a virtual learning management system.

They’ll complete on-campus labs in Lakeland’s 14,531 sq. ft. Animal Health Clinic, which includes practical teaching spaces, a modern surgical suite, exam and treatment rooms, equine treatment area, bovine handling system and the latest equipment used by veterinary clinics.

Application for Lakeland’s blended AHT program is open.

Lakeland also offers an in-person, on-campus AHT program option that starts in September, however, it is waitlisted at this time.

The 108th Bruce Stampede is set to go ahead from July 31- August 1. The Stampede has been in existence since 1914 and is classified as Canada’s oldest one day pro rodeo. Since its inception the Bruce Stampede has hosted riders, ropers, and racers. According to their website http://www.brucestampede.ca it has hosted the bravest cowboys and cowgirls the Rodeo World has to offer. The site also states that “not only does it offer an action packed day of CPRA Pro Rodeo events, it also offers fun rodeo events and stampede activities that locals, amateurs, and families can participate in all weekend long.”

On July 30 at 5 p.m. the ABRA Jackpot will providing attendees the opportunity to watch competitors Turn & Burn as they run patterns around the barrels and aim for the fastest time. Moving to the next day July 31, Rodeo goers can cheer on the local amateur kids and adults as they compete in various rodeo events. Children 12 and under can enter

the grounds for free, while 12 and over with a $10 admission. This event will start at 12:30 p.m. and after the local rodeo, the Mule Races will begin.

If the CPRA is what tickles ones fancy, you can get a sneak peek at the time events and cheer on the slack per formance at 6 p.m. free of charge.

Adult only entertainment will start at 9 p.m. where attendees can enjoy a dance and cash bar, admission is $10.

On August 1st, the day will start with a pancake breakfast at both the Rodeo Grounds and the Bruce Community Centre, which is located on the north side of Bruce from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. With full tummies you can move on for the Grand Parade which will be showcased starting at the community centre at 10 a.m. moving its way through Mainstreet.

A gospel Christian Cowboys service will also be held at the Rodeo ground at 11 a.m. and a Horseshoe Tournament will start at 11 a.m.

Steve grew up on a farm north of Derwent as one of ten children to Sam and Anne Zaharko. Sam passed away in 1944, leaving the children to attend to all the farm duties. Entertainment on the farm was learning to play the fiddle, saxophone, guitar, and accordion, with the fiddle being his favorite instrument throughout his lifetime.

Winning various fiddle contest, it was more than a hobby. Steve formed his own band and played at numerous weddings, dances, and parade floats.

Steve married Ruth in 1954 and had two children. He started his own business in Mannville after acquiring his barber license and running a four-table pool hall. The family lived in a house attached to the business until 1969 when they moved to Vermilion and Steve started working for Lakeland College. He retired from the College in 1989.

Summertime always meant trips to the mountains, Banff & Miette being his favorites. After many years of the tenting the family moved up to a small trailer. After his wife Ruth passed away in 1990, he maintained his own household, doing the shopping, cooking, cleaning, and planting his garden of at least 100 hills of potatoes as well as carrots and beets. The family would always get together to help dig potatoes and end the day with a wiener roast.

He loved to drive his tractor and quad to visit the pond and watch the birds, beavers and the occasional moose or bear. This was his resort.

Steve was always a loving grandpa to all his grandchildren.

Vermilion Ag Society Hosting Alberta Draft Horse Classic

The Vermilion Ag Society was unable to hold the Fair this year due to the lack of time the Society had to organize the many moving parts involved in holding a Fair; the spirit will be kept alive with one of the most adored events.

From July 23 -25 the Ag Societ y will be hosting the Alberta Draft Horse Classic, which has always been a hit.

During the three - day event attendees will have the opportunity to watch halter classes in the morning, and hitch

classes in the afternoon. The 4 horse hitch will open the hitch show Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. The famous 6 horse hitches will open the hitch show on Saturday and Sunday beginning at 2:30 p.m. in front of the Grandstands. “ We are ver y exc ite d to have the same five 6 horse hitches that competed at the Calgary Stampede this year. Many of the hor ses and hitches at this show compete at many of the major shows in Canada and the United States,” explained Doug Stewart, member of the heavy horse

committee.

Stewart also mentioned that due to the tremendous support of their donors and volunteers the Ag Society is able to hold the Alberta Draft Horse Classic as well as complete various maintenance and upgrade projects that were required. “ We are so grateful for the financial support our donors have continued to provide which gave us the ability to hold the Heavy Horse Show this year. Hopefully, the show will help keep the s pir it of

Support For Alberta’s Farmers And Ranchers Affected By Drought

Farmers have been hit hard with the drought conditions that has plagued Alberta since the beginning of the growing season. Many crops are starting to burn and wither away due to the lack of moisture.

Alberta’s Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Devin Dresshen has recognized the difficult situation they are experiencing and has provided an update on what Alberta’s government is planning.

July 15, Dressen stated, “Alberta’s government recognizes the significant impacts that extreme dry weather has on the province’s producers. Our government is standing up for Alberta farmers and ranchers to ensure they are supported through these extreme conditions.”

According to Dreeshen with a federal election looming, Alberta has received a verbal commitment from Ottawa that a joint AgriRecovery program will be initiated to support Prairie producers affected by drought conditions prior to an election.

“The details of an AgriRecovery program are still being developed with industry and we will work with our provincial and federal counterparts to ensure that Alberta’s farmers and ranchers are supported,”

stated Dreeshen.

Dreeshen says that he has advised crop adjusters to be flexible and complete early assessments with affected crop and hay land, “for example offering alternative use of crops to address forecasted feed shortages in the livestock industry.”

He also said that Alberta has announced a 20 per cent reduction in insurance premiums this year, which has allowed almost 400 additional farmers and ranchers to enroll in crop, pasture and forage insurance that protects against weather-related production loss.

“Alberta also has a Water Pumping Program that provides assistance to producers for the emergency filling of dugouts for livestock. Producers can rent pipe and pumping equipment from the province to fill dugouts or other suitable catch basins from nearby water sources for their animals,” said Minister Dreeshen.

The Minister acknowledged the current weather conditions and expressed his support by saying, “I want to assure producers across Alberta that we understand the severity of this prolonged period of extreme dry weather and we are doing everything we can to ensure you receive the support you need.”

Stan Garnier a 3rd generation rancher and past Rodeo champion from Dewberry bought his 20-year-old cow 19 years ago as a yearling Heifer. Since Stan has owned the cow she has produced 11 calves and six sets of twins making her have 23 calves in total. This year she still produced a calf and Garnier states that she is a wonderful Mom and that she has the biggest calves in the fall.

“The good story of this cow is I gave this cow to my daughter Danele as a birthday present and Danele says that the cow will die on our ranch,” stated Garnier.

The cow currently weighs 1900 lbs and according to Garnier she is always in good shape, and that she leads all the cows out to pasture. Garnier has 550 head of cattle on grass this year and he says, “I hope they all Cow #2 with her calf this year. Photo Lorna Hamilton pay their way later as this good cow does.”

report provides details of the costs to both taxpayers and the government in cleaning up abandoned wells as well as those that are about to reach their ‘best before’ date. This is the point where a well no longer produces enough income to fund its own cleanup. According to the report, four out of five unreclaimed wells in Alberta have already passed this date.

The repor t, written by Regan Boychuk, Mark Anielski, John Snow Jr., and Brad Stelfox highlights how the financial burden of cleaning up orphan wells has fallen onto Canadian taxpayers in projected amounts of over $55 billion. By law, these costs are to be incurred by the companies that own or operate the wells, something the Alber ta Energy Regulator (AER) is responsible for enforcing.

This report illustrates how the AER has struggled to enforce the Polluter Pay principle especially after a company has become insolvent or the well is sold off. The principle, established in 1999 as one of the guiding factors in the Canadian Environmental Protection Act “embodies the principle that

users and producers of pollutants and wastes should bear the responsibility for their actions. Companies or people that pollute should pay the costs they impose on society.” Drilling companies are not given permission to build wells in Alber ta without submit ting a reclamation plan with their applications to the AER. After a well has run its course however, or a company becomes insolvent, the enforcement of the plans is continually failing to happen.

In the repor t, the ALDP presents 13 re c ommend ations to aid in the enforcement of the Polluter Pay principle, including a suggestion to reform the AER and exercise the power it possesses to enforce clean-ups. It also proposes a collection of the clean-up costs before a company is allowed to drill, a move that could save billions of dollars for rural municipalities in Alberta. In February of this year, Alberta’s rural municipalities stated that they are owed $245 million in unpaid property taxes by oil and gas companies. In a previous inter view, Paul McLaughlin of the Rural Municipalities of Alberta stated “We are seeing 57 per cent of those non-paying companies are still operating, making no gestures to enter into payment plans or any other mechanisms that can be used to pay those taxes.” These taxes include land that oil and gas wells are sitting on, payment of taxes, in combination of prepayment of cleanup costs for wells, would be nothing but beneficial to rural communities.

However, this does not include the most recent promise from the Government of Alberta’s Site Rehabilitation Program, which was primarily funded by the federal government’s COVID19 Economic Response Plan. Up to $1 billion in funding to Alberta’s oilfield service contractors to perform well, pipeline, and oil and gas site reclamation work had been commit ted, but a recent report from the Parkland Institute, a research group headquartered at the Univer sit y of Alber ta, discloses that the money did very little to increase oil and gas clean up. In an interview with the CBC, Megan Egler, the report’s author discussed how the majority of the funding went to only five companies that operate in the province, all of which have considerable profit margins.

Vermilion 4-H Sheep Club Achievement Day

The Vermilion 4-H Sheep Club’s 46th Annual Achievement Day is just around the corner. It is scheduled to be held in person on July 27 this year, unlike last year when they were forced to hold a virtual Achievement Day due to COVID. “The members are very ecstatic to be able to have a live show and share their hard work with the public,” said club leader, Jessica Flanders.

Throughout the year, members learned how to communicate with each other in different ways, completed workshops both virtually and in-person on grooming, nutrition, parasite management, pathology etc.

Two months before Achievement Day, the members get their market lambs and work their projects caring for them, feeding and training them for the show. A few days before the show the members are busy washing, grooming and working with their project animals.

“This preparation helps the member and their proj-

ect animal practice the skills they will need to be successful and have fun. It will help them to be more prepared to listen to the directions the ring master and judge will ask them, and make it a little less stressful for the members and the animals,” stated Flanders.

The day provides club members the opportunity to show their market lambs and goats at 1 p.m. at the Vermilion Ag Society Sheep Barn. Final market lamb and goat show classes will be held at 5 p.m. with the sale to follow at 6 p.m. at the same location.

“In addition to market lambs/goats there are also ewe lambs, yearling ewe etc.,” said Flanders.

Flanders also says that Achievement Day provides a good opportunity for anyone that is considering joining the Club to come and see what is involved, have the chance to lead a sheep around the ring and to ask questions they may have.
