Vermilion Gun Club Open House Coming Soon

Now in its 19th season, the Vermilion Gun Club has developed into a well established club in the Vermilion Area.

To show community members everything they have to offer, the club will be holding an Open House and Member Appreciation Day on August 7.

The club, renamed in 2011, was actually established in 2002 as the Vermilion and District Fish and Game Gun Club on an old gravel pit site. Over time, the club has grown to include roughly 300 members and has built an excellent facility south of Vermilion for members to hone their firearm skills and enjoy time with fellow enthusiasts.

Relying entirely on volunteers for maintenance of the grounds, the shooting range encompasses a covered firing line shelter, clubhouse, five different distance berms, outhouses, a storage shed and several traps for the stand trap field. This year’s summer workbee, held this past Saturday added mesh wind screens to the firing line and clubhouse, providing some much appreciated shelter from bugs and wind. There are plans to enhance the clubhouse, including a fresh-

water tank, and some kitchen features to provide a venue for members to relax in.

Dwayne Gorniak, President of the club is looking forward to all the changes the club has planned over the next few years, including the possibility of a small camping area, and praises all the volunteers the club has relied on to build their facility.

Not only is the range open to members from ‘dawn to dusk’, it also hosts a few weekly themed activities, including Cowboy Action Shoots on Mondays (using replica 1800 firearms), Trap Shoots on Wednesdays and Sundays, and Military Style Rifle shooting on the third Tuesday of every month.

To be part of the club, members must possess a Possession and Acquisition License (PAL), which is renewable every five years. This license is obtained through the federal government.

The club would like to invite the community to an Open House and Member Appreciation Day on Saturday August 7 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. They encourage people to come out and experience a “Fun Day” of Pistol, Rifle and Trap Shooting, watch a Cowboy Action Shooting Demonstration and enjoy a Free BBQ Lunch and Refreshments. This “Free” event is open

to everyone interested in firearms and the World of Sport Shooting. Everyone over 18 years of age attending will have a chance to win one of two draws for a 2022 Regular membership and one draw for a 2022 Family membership to the Vermilion Gun Club.

With Canada day ahead of us, more than ever, it’s a time to reflect on being Canadian in this s e a s o n . F i n a l l y, COVID restrictions are being lifted July 1 in Alber ta, with Saskatchewan to follow on July 11. I hope and pray that COVID is in the rear-view mirror, and we are accelerating with great speed away. For many the fear that has been instilled, will take time to work through.

I hope for a speedy deliverance for all those that are impacted by fear and anxiety. Everyone will have to move at their own pace and comfort level as the province opens up, while respecting those that are still feeling unsure. I pray

for healing of those that have suffered the loss of a loved one, and have had to soldier through with out the usual community support at the funeral, and afterwards. This has been a hard 15 months. Through it all we have learned a lot, to be kinder, to keep our hands clean and to talk a lot more to God. When I think of Canada Day I think of many Canadian foods, but in this season, I want to honour Bannock, as it has it roots in Scotland, but was widely adopted into the Metis and indigenous people of the Canadian prairies and North West Territories as their own. I love this recipe and I love Canada.

Bannock 3 cups white flour 3 tablespoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons sugar

2 cups water Mix all the dry ingredients in a bowl.

Stir in the water. Do not over stir. Allow to sit for 1 hour. The dough is a bit sticky.

Preheat cooking oil at three quarters to one inch depth to 375 degrees in an electric frying pan or deep fryer. Put oil on your hands and form the dough into patties with a hole in the center. When you drop the bannock into the hot oil, the hole in the middle disappears. Cook in the oil until golden brown and then flip the bannock and cook the other side until golden brown. Makes 10. If you are serving bannock at the end of the meal of with coffee or tea, you can sprinkle it with powdered icing sugar through a sieve when the bannock is hot out of the frying pan. Bannock, also called fry bread is a traditional Canadian dish of the native Indian, Inuit and Métis.

The Early Entrepreneurs Of Vermilion

In 1907, Vermilion was a growing community that had sprung up in the Alberta prairie and its success that continues to this day is thanks to its early residents who helped build up the community.

In today’s column, I want to look at those early pioneers who were featured in the Edmonton Journal as Vermilion began to make news for its growth.

WJ Rutherford A native of Stratford, Ontario, he had a ranch located near Vermilion that had 200 head of stock. Until 1905, his nearest post office was Edmonton but when Vermilion came along, he found that suddenly he was near an important community that gave him access to the wider world. Along with being a major ranch owner, he was also a member of the Odd Fellows and the Board of Trade. In 1906, he shipped out five car loads of cattle to Winnipeg, showing his growing renown in the area as a rancher.

Thomas Harris A former resident of Wales, he came to Canada in 1892 and traveled extensively for several years before coming to Vermilion in 1906. In 1907, he served as the

chief of police for the community and was reported to be well-liked by Vermilion residents.

Robert Mitchell Known as Bob around town, he was contracted to build five miles of the Canadian National Railway, which he did between Bordell and Islay. He had a strong desire to help those in the community and he was well liked in Vermilion for his generosity. Arriving in Vermilion in 1906, he owned one of the most successful implement businesses in the area. He would also buy the Hotel Vermilion, which was built in 1905. The hotel was considered to be first class and room rates at the time were one to two dollars per month.

Robert Dunsmore Robert was born in Ontario and in 1880 came out to Manitoba, and in 1906, moved to Vermilion where he started the Alberta Land Company. A major dealer in real estate and agricultural implements, his business quickly succeeded and he became prominent in the community after joining the Independent Order of Foresters and the Odd Fellows.

M.A. Brimacombe Born in Devonshite, England and coming to Canada in 1874 to Ontario, he would remain there until 1899 when he came to Winnipeg. In 1903, he came to Edmonton,

Well, today people are already able to control robotic arms and legs with only the power of their minds. Specialized sensors are placed on the nerve endings of the amputated joint and are sent into a computer to be processed and used for control of the artificial limb. Though not perfect, even with the current versions on the market there has been a clear and profound shift in the way people think about their prosthetics.

While many people used to think of their prosthetics as a tool used to get around, or something that helps make life a little easier, today many people with these new robotic limbs see their prosthetics as an extension of themselves. Thanks to new sensory technology from companies like Atom Touch people can now feel touch through their prosthetic limbs.

Compared to the past lifeless prosthetics of the past, these new bionics will move much more true to their biological counterparts.

All of this makes it possible for those using these new augments to do this previously unreachable for amputees.

They are now able to gently pick up objects such as grapes, eggs and other delicate items that require some aspect of precision. Made possible through the sensors in the fingertips they can regulate their grip strength through the perceived force on the objects. This has historically been a challenge in bionics as controlling a powerful machine to delicately perform a task is complicated.

Atom Touch even demonstrated someone who was able to play the piano using their mind-controlled arm, although impressive, the demonstration was not quite seamless and it is obvious that they still have years of work before these devices could be used with the precision required for something like surgery. It is tough for a bystander to know how well this technology works, as even a minuscule offset from how your brain thinks your fingers should move would create an uncanny feeling.

almost everyone has a unique augment of some sort. It depicts a bizarre world where people with prosthetics have surpassed those without, in terms of strength and utility. People can swap out robotic arms and legs for different tasks whether it be, a leg that lets you run faster and jump higher, or an arm with a weapon build in. Of course, this couldn’t possibly happen in real life though, right?

Well, there are already people taking

this idea into reality, from one man who made himself two feet taller with custom legs, to another who wears a custom drum stick as a hand. The possibilities are endless and who knows what weird things people will think up as technology progresses even further. So, even if bionics aren’t perfect yet, they have already monumentally improved many people’s lives and who knows what comes next next.

Clandonald Celebrates The Last Classes Of Clandonald School

Friday was a beautiful day to recognize and celebrate the last students of Clandonald School. The school, which has been in the Clandonald area in one form or another since the 1920’s and came to reside in the present building in 1960, will be permanently closing on June 30.

full of fun activities that incorporated many places of the Hamlet, including snacks in someone’s yard, games throughout the community, a wagon ride through town and the parade on Friday after the final Grade 6 celebration. The students were also treated on Friday to their last lunch from the “Hot Ladies” as the students affectionately call the seniors who serve their hot lunches.

Vermilion and District Chamber Of Commerce Receives Federal Shop Local Funds

In a press release sent out on June 24, the Vermilion and District Chamber of Commerce informed the community of federal shop local funding in the amount of $20,700 that they will be receiving to continue to promote local patronage of

community businesses.

“The past year and a half has been very challenging, and just like the business community the Chamber has had to make many hard decisions that have had negative financial impacts; due to the loss of revenue many projects had to be put on hold.” says Leanne Martin,

Chamber Office Manager. “Thanks to the funding announcement from the federal government this morning, we will be able to forge ahead with many of our original plans.”

A second round of funding applications is currently being processed.

This funding will help in the develop-

Hi there! I just came across the great Ghost Signs article from the November 3, 2020 issue of the Vermilion Voice that highlighted the Vermilion Valley Fertilizer sign, which asked if anyone had more information about this company to contact the Vermilion Voice.

My dad is Harold Geislinger and as your article mentions, he owned Vermilion Valley Fertilizer from 1976 to 1989.

During that time the company not only sold Sherritt brand fertilizer manufactured in Fort Saskatchewan but also sold Swift and Nutrena animal feeds (as advertised on the ghost sign, on the building that was once the feed shed).

The company also sold Windsor Salt from Lindbergh and farm products ranging from Westeel Rosco grain bins to fencing. During the busy spring and fall

seasons, the company employed more than 20 people, and trucks ran loads of fertilizer and anhydrous ammonia from Fort Saskatchewan 24 hours a day.

Vermilion Valley Fertilizer was recognized as the top Sherritt dealership in Western Canada more than once. Over the years, the company handed out thousands of branded caps, calendars, pens and pom-pom toques to customers. A highlight during the late 1970s and early 1980s was a customer appreciation pit barbeque held each June which featured local 4H beef and locally made salads and pies. This was one of the biggest events in Vermilion at the time, attracting upwards of a thousand customers who brought their lawn chairs and appetites for an evening of food and socializing. It even featured entertain-

ment from a piano player on an improvised stage made from a grain bin floor.

Harold retired after selling the business but stayed in touch with many of his customers over the years. He and his wife Peggy, who worked as the librarian at J.R. Robson School, now reside in West Edmonton.

In an incredible coincidence, in the same issue of the Vermilion Voice where the Ghost Signs article appears on page 8, there is an article on page 7 highlighting the Alberta Blue Cross Community Roots Program that quotes the Vice-President of Corporate Relations for Alberta Blue Cross, Brian Geislinger--who is Harold and Peggy’s son and grew up in Vermilion. Canada has had many flags over the years, evidence of its evolving identity and the origins of those who helped build this country. These symbols can teach us a great deal about our country and what it means to be Canadian.

English explorer John Cabot first declared our land British territory in 1497 by posting the cross of St. George—the British flag at the time. It was depicted by a red cross on a white background.

Then Canada’s First Nations saw the Fleur-de-lis flag flown over their land, as Jacques Cartier declared Canada to now be under French rule. Later, in 1763, Canada returned to the British fold after England won the Seven Years’

Flags That Tell A Story

War. The Union Jack now flew high over our lands. This new British flag combined the red from England’s cross of St. George, the white from Scotland’s St. Andrew’s cross and the diagonal red of Ireland’s St. Patrick’s cross.

Following its Confederation in 1867, Canada naturally wanted to have its own identity, but still continue to pay allegiance to England. As a result, a new flag was created, bearing the Union Jack along with the coat of arms of Canada’s founding provinces (Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick). The coat of arms of Canada’s remaining provinces were gradually added over time. This flag

was called the Canadian Red Ensign.

Our current Canadian flag with its prominent red maple leaf was only created in 1965. The bountiful maple tree has held important meaning for Canada’s Aboriginal people for generations—even long before the first white men arrived on these shores. The two vertical bands represent the two coasts that flank our country. The red and white colours represent France and England, a symbol to unify our nation’s origins.

During Canada Day festivities on July 1, people all across the country will be celebrating their pride in being Canadian. These festivities are also an ideal occasion to remember some of the major events of our history.

1. The name “Canada” was used officially for the first time in 1791. It was created from an ab or ig inal wor d meaning “village”.

2. The British North America Act was adop-ted in 1867, making Canada a dominion of the British Empire.

3. In 19 21, K i n g G e o r g e V decreed red and white to be the colours of Canada.

There is much about Canada to inspire our rich collection of national symbols: we are a country with welcomed cultural diversity, we have four distinct seasons, and we are blessed with stunning landscapes of prairies, forests, mountains, rivers, and lakes. Historical events and our natural heritage have inspired the most famous of our symbols.

Perhaps the most recognizable symbol today is the maple leaf, just like the one that adorns the Canadian flag. The maple leaf image was adopted widely in the HAPPY BIRTHDAY CANADA eighteenth century and has appeared on the uniforms and insignias of the Canadian military since 1850. All Wishing All Of Our Customers a the grave stones of soldiers who have died in combat and are buried overseas or in Canada are engraved with a maple leaf.

Another important symbol is the beaver. This animal’s image was closely linked with the Hudson’s Bay Company many centuries ago, when Europeans first made their way inland. The beaver was later adopted as the logo of the Canadian Pacific Railway and is used today by many other groups and associations across Canada. The image of the beaver is engraved on the five-cent coin, and it appears on the coats of arms of Saskatchewan and Alberta as well as some cities, including Toronto.

The Canadian identity is also partly defined by our history with the British monarchy, highlighted by the image of Queen Elizabeth II on our twenty-dollar bills.

Jumping Clinic Held At the Ag Grounds

R e g i s t e r e d Eq u e s t r i a n C a n a d a c o a c h Q u i n d y Wat t s , w h o i s a l s o registered through the Alberta Equestrian Federation held a jumping clinic at the Vermilion Ag grounds on Saturday, June 26. Watts is originally from the Peterborough area in Ontario, and has resided in Alber ta for the past 15 years. Watts currently resides on a small farm just south of Wainwright and has been involved in the horse industry for 30 years and riding since she was 12 years old.

“I have worked in dif ferent discip l i n e s o f t h e i n d u s t r y, w h i c h h a s helped me quite a bit when it comes t o c r e at i n g s u c c e s s w i t h d i f f i c u l t horse, and rider combinations. I have

pulled skills from the hunter/jumpers, dressage, western pleasure, and the harness racing industr y that I have worked in,” commented Watts.

T h e c lini c Wat t s h e l d o n S aturday provided riders from beginner to advanced levels the oppor tunit y to hone in on their jumping skills on their horses and to also help teach the horses how to read jumps. She also held a class which contained flat riders where no jumps were involved just pole work.

“It is to teach equitation skills to the riders, and to teach the horses how to use their body properly,” explained Watts.

Watts also explained that the clinic is not only educational for riders, but that it provides riders the opportunity

to get out with their horses and to put valuable miles on a horse.

“In time, your horse can become very rideable, and they learn to enjoy road trips. If you create a great learning environment for the horse and riders, it makes it a fun experience for everyone, and there may be one small thing that has been learned by the individual that may stick with them for a long time,” said Watts.

Wat t s s t a r te d w o r k i n g i n b a r n s when she was young which star ted her horsemanship skills and said that she had a pony which liked to keep her humble by letting her hit the ground on a monthly basis. She described her younger self as a ‘barn rat’ as she worked and took on any jobs and rides just so that she could learn.

“I continued working with horses, and my skills, and education evolved

under the tutelage of many professionals in the horse industry,” Watts comments.

Wat ts teaches in the Wainwright area out of her farm and the Wainwright Equine Centre and also teaches some of her clients in Lloydminster one day a week.

Riders enjoyed the clinic and the opportunities it provided under sunny skies and very warm temperatures.

The clinic was organized by the Light Horse Committee at the Vermilion Ag Society. Joining the Light Horse Committee is a way for the younger generation to continue the legacy of the Light Horse Committee. “ Being a par t of the Light Horse Committee is a wonderful way to give back to the community,” stated Dallis Franke, who is a member of the Light Horse Committee.

Indigenous Courses Offered to Help Build Understanding

Lakeland College recently shared links to some free online courses being offered by two Canadian Universities to enhance people’s knowledge of Indigenous history in Canada.

This course from the University of Alber ta’s Faculty of Native Studies explores both Indigenous histories and contemporary issues in Canada. This Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is meant for learners who are not part of the Faculty that would like to enhance their

knowledge and understanding of Indigenous/non-Indigenous relationships.

One of the biggest summer events in the area is back for its 34th year. Beginning July 28 and running until August 2, ‘Western Canada’s Finest Mid-Summer Curling Bonspiel’ is offering all the regular features that attendees enjoy.

Beginning on the July 28 with a BBQ for sponsors and curlers, the weekend is packed full, with curling, a banquet, both live entertainment and a DJ, and the annual slow pitch tournament they offer every year. Four types of curling entry are being offered this year, mixed, mixed doubles, men’s and ladies.

This Is Hearts And Hands

Submitted Several years ago, we approached The Bargain Store to ask if we could leave a box for people to drop off food and other items for our non-profit charity. Instead, they offered to hold a food drive. For the past two falls, we have benefitted from their efforts. The staff marks off items along the store aisles that we are able to use, and seems to really enjoy their part in the endeavor.

Cathy, the manager – approached us this May with the offer of a Spring food drive, which we gratefully accepted. By June 21, the store had collected food, cleaning and personal items. Over $1300 of purchases were made within the store,

as well as a few items brought in and dropped off. The community support for the Bargain Stores drive has been amazing. We are especially grateful during COVID as cash donations have been down significantly, and we have had to limit fresh foods, but have otherwise been able to meet all other needs of clients in crisis.

Regular drop off boxes are in place year-round at Riverside Hair in the Stewart building, Shoppers Drug Mart, and Striker Lanes.

Thank you to the Bargain Store and to our community for your continuing support of Hearts and Hands. It is because of you that we are able to continue.

Curtis Anderson Walks For Brain Injury Awareness Month Sue Chikie

Cur tis Anderson walked from his home to Mannville and back, which is 19.8 miles round trip on May 30th. He made the journey, as June is brain injury awareness month.

It has been 19 years since his injury, but Curtis says, he can still see a lot of progress and recovery.

Curtis has also rode 99 days on a stationary bike, also for Brain Injury Awareness also putting 2510.2 miles on the bike, which would be equivalent to riding from Vancouver to just 7 hours east of Toronto. He plans on riding the equivalent to across Canada on this bike. Anderson said, “The best I did was 19.1 miles in 1 hour.” This exercise also helps with brain function and repair.

Curtis is stilling raising awareness in a different manner this year.

J e r o m e ’s w e h ave taken time to celebrate what will surely be one of the most memorable years in our school history! Over the past few weeks, students have been enjoying the opportunity to go on local field trips. The grade one students walked to the local pollinator garden where they met a microbiologist, and member of the environment committee, Juliane Ollinger. She explained the pollination process as students explored the plants and various features of the garden design. Derek Young, Director of Infrastructure and Planning for the Town of Vermilion, was also present to discuss the building process for the garden. The students had fun learning about ways that our local community is helping our environment and protecting it’s precious pollinators.

Track and field events ran during the week of June 21-25.

Each class had their events during their physical education classes and competed against everyone in their class. No ribbons were handed out, as this form of track and field was more for fun than for competition.

A few events had to be changed to accommodate the Covid rules, but for the most part, students had fun doing what they’ve done for years.

June 24 was our virtual AR Celebration Day. VES would like to thank Mr. Beecroft

Provincial Park for their year end field trip, where they went on a nature walk, played Ultimate Rock, Paper, Scissors, and many other fun games.

The grade 3 class went swimming at the pool, which must have felt like a real vacation! Grade 4 students had a fun day visiting their teacher Mrs. Despins home, where they played badminton, and ran through the sprinkler. Finally, the grade 5 students went for a pond dip in the provincial park, learning all about aquatic ecosystems. It has been a week full of adventures and fun!

Monday, June 21, was National Indigenous Peoples Day. St. Jerome’s staff and students honored this day in many special ways. All of the grade 5’s read about dream catchers and their significance and each had the opportunity to make their own. The grade 4 class made bannock and shared the delicious treat with the other classes in the school. Students read Indigenous legends and learned about the 7 Sacred Teachings. It was a day filled with learning and apprecia-

tion for all of the beauty and wisdom that these teachings have to offer.

Elementary Track & Field Day was held on Friday, June 18. We were happy to still hold the fun-filled day, while making modifications, to make sure everyone was safe as they participated in the various events.

Students competed in the 50 meter, 100 meter, and 300 meter running races.

There was also standing long jump, long jump, and ball kick. The weather was perfect, overcast with a cool breeze. Mr. Chase & Mr. Whelan barbecued hotdogs and there were freezies to help us stay cool.

The last week of school brought with it other fun and celebrations. There was beach day, neon day, pajama day, and even a talent show held by Mrs. Schmidt’s class. Students showcased their various talents, such as singing, dancing, and playing the piano. However, it was Mrs. Schmit’s talent that got everyone’s attention, as she cruised by on her unicycle!

Overall, it was a fun end to such a whirlwind year. Have a safe and wonderful

summer and we look forward to seeing you all back in September!
