‘Growing The Ice Plant’ Continues For Another Season

T he Ver mili o n Cur ling Clu b has secured a parcel of land for the 2021 cropping season to continue to raise funds for the Ice Plant improvement.

Dean Jacula and Shawn Jacula will be providing the use of 70 acres of culti-

vated land for the initiative of raising funds towards Vermilion’s Ice Facility.

“The curling club has been an important facility for my parents and has continued on to our generation, although underutilized during these times, that will change, it is such an important hub for our community both

physically and mentally,” said Shawn Jacula.

A n drew M c Cr ae, Grow t he Ic e Plant Board Member, is excited for another season of this project stating, “ We are happy to have many of last years’ contributors on-board again this year to cover the expenses

which overall maximizes the revenue we can capture from the donation of the land.”

New Detachment Commander In Town

With the retirement of SGT. Boehr in January, the Vermilion RCMP detachment was in need of a new Detachment Commander, and on April 9, SGT. Mike Dunsmore officially stepped into the role. SGT. Dunsmore is no stranger to the Vermilion community; he actually joined the detachment in September of 2018, becoming Vermilion detachment’s Operations NCO, basically the second in command.

SGT. D un s m ore’s RC M P c are er began in 2004 in Cochrane Alber ta where he ser ved until 2010 before transferring to Cold Lake for a t wo year stop there. When he transferred to the Lloydminster detachment, he moved up to the rank of Corporal, and took on the role of Watch Commander.

During his six years in Lloydminster, SGT. Dunsmore also gained experience as a plainclothes officer for two years.

“I am excited to take on this role, I got a good taste of it filling in since SGT. Boehr retired, and have a plan for moving forward. I really quite enjoy this area and the communities we serve here.” SGT. Dunsmore stated.

As Detachment Commander, Sgt Dunsmore is responsible for the daily activities of the detachment, including both administrative and opera-

tional aspects of the unit. The Vermilion Detachment covers the following communities; Auburndale, Borrodaile, Brennan Acreages, Buffalo Coulee, Clandonald, Claysmore, Cloverview Acres, Derwent, Grandview Estates, Indian Lake Meadows, Landonville, Mannville, Minburn, Preston, Rusylvia, Saltaux, Telegraph Creek, Tolland, Vermilion, Wildmere and Innisfree.

If anyone has any information regarding anything suspicious near Range Road 141, contact the RCMP Vermilion Fire and Rescue were sent South of or give anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.

Vermilion on Highway 41 to a rural resident’s property in the early hours of the morning on April 23.

Upon arriving on scene, crews found a fully involved farm building on fire. Firefighters worked to contain the blaze and prevent further damage to nearby structures and grass.

“This call came in at midnight, which again shows the dedication of our volunteers. The fire investigation is complete and this fire is not suspicious,” commented Kirk Hughes, Director of Protective Services.

Fire crews remained on-scene until the early hours.

On May 3 at 9:03 a.m. Blackfoot Fire was toned out for a report of a vehicle on fire.

Village Libraries Get Creative

L i ke s o m a ny o t h e r c o m m u n i t y ser vices, Public Libraries have had to make some adjustments over the past year in how they operate. Many offer curbside pick up and drop off of materials, and all libraries have had to change how they provide programming to their communities. Some of the Village libraries in our area have come up with creative ways to stay connected with their patrons.

Last November in an effort to keep Paradise Valley residents connected through the winter COVID shut down, the Three Cities Librar y sent over 200 wooden pieces home with school kids and community members. Each piece is unique, no two are the same and they were meant to be used to build a community tree on display at the librar y. The tree began growing in Februar y when decorated pieces were returned in all different colours and patterns. The project had the goal to let the community “represent themselves” on their piece as a family or an individual says librarian Xander Adams. So far 150 pieces have come back, to create an amazing display in the library. The library would like to say that not only present Paradise Valley area residents are welcome to participate in the project, former residents who called the PV area home are invited to contact the library and make arrangements to get a piece to decorate.

Road Bans #01-21 is now in place to protect and preserve public safety and County infrastructure. The duration of the ban is unknown at this time. PROTECTIVE SERVICES:

A Partial Fire Ban was implemented in the County on Friday, April 9, 2021. Only recreational and incinerator fires are permitted. All other fires are banned and all previously issued permits are cancelled for the duration of the fire ban.

Conditions of fire permits and fire bans must be followed. Failure to do so will result in a minimum penalty of $500.00. Check our website throughout the summer for fire ban updates.

This year we say thank you to the bus drivers for not only delivering students safely to and from school every day, but for keeping them safe in the midst of a pandemic. COVID-19 has brought about new safety protocols like extra cleaning, ensuring students are wearing their masks, hand sanitizing, and numerous other rules to help keep students safe on the bus where social distancing is not easily accomplished. Not once this year have I heard any bus driver refusing to take on these extra duties, because they know this is just another part of their huge responsibility to transport students. Bus drivers still have to deal with the bumpy roads, inclement weather and kids having bad days, but they do it because they love what they do. We want to thank each and every bus driver for their added diligence and extra care for the students on their buses. WE APPRECIATE YOU!!!

Farmers are busy in the field getting the crops into the ground. It has been a ver y dr y spring.

The dry spring means that the people that suf fer from seasonal allergies are really noticing it right now, as pollen counts are very high. If you have a diffuser, adding a few drops of peppermint and lavender essential oils can really help. I am hoping for rain both for some moisture for the farmers, some relief for the allergy sufferers and for the greening of the prairies.

It was in May of 1932 when a number of boys were swimming in the Vermilion River when suddenly Clive Brown, a six-year-old local boy, fell over the dam that stretched across the river into a deep pool of water below. Nearby was Reider Jensen, a recent arrival to the area with his parents, who saw the boy get carried away into an eddy. He could not reach the boy but Robert Brown, the 16-year-old brother of Clive and a Boy Scout, saw the danger and realizing his

brother was in danger, dove into the water to rescue his brother.

At the same time, another Boy Scout, Bill Stepaniuk, dove in to assist Jensen who was caught in submerged wire netting after he too dove in to save Clive. Jensen was rescued by Stepaniuk through the use of long poles that he was able to grab onto and pull himself to safety.

Long poles were also used to save Clive after his brother swam out to him to help him grab on the pole so he could be pulled to shore. By this point, Robert swam to shore completely exhausted after saving the life of his brother, by putting his own life in danger to do so.

Alberta, W.L. Walsh, awarded Stepaniuk and Brown two silver crosses for their heroics. At the time, this was the first occasion in Canada in which signal honours had been conveyed on so many Scouts for bravery, courage and great presence of mind in connection with one event.

Since the first Moon landing in 1969, humanity as a whole has advanced far beyond what was imagined in the ’60s. Regardless of our other accomplishments, it has been almost 50 years since anyone has set foot on the Moon due to a lack of government funding. This is because space exploration is expensive, and without the competitive incentive of beating the Soviets, the American government has had no interest in returning. Thankfully, in 2021 the space race looks much different now, instead of countries competing for the first to set a flag on the moon, corporations are now competing to be the first to colonize Mars.

The motivation is no longer glory, these space enterprises are in it to make money, and by doing so they are pushing space technology to a new level. A leader in the field, SpaceX, was the first to land and reuse a rocket, thanks to the new Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. Through their cameras and other sensors, the AI is capable of viewing the environment and adjusting the rocket’s falling speed and rotation perfectly, slowing the rockets down until they’re

almost floating in mid-air right before landing softly on the ground. With this technology, SpaceX has made ambitious plans to send a manned space ship to Mars by the year 2026. Something that would have been unfeasible due to the old one-time use of rockets of the past. Regardless billionaire Elon Musk (SpaceX’s CEO) is hopeful that they will reach their targets and beat the competition to colonizing Mars.

Musk proposed his plan for colonizing Mars back in 2017 in which he stated the plan was to create a large rocket big enough to carry 100 metric tons, double that of the average rocket. This rocket would be large enough to carry up to 100 passengers and some cargo to Mars. However, before this becomes practical they would require a way to refuel the rockets outside of the earth’s atmosphere. So how could this be done?

She felt confident during her practicums and now in her full-time position, credits Lakeland’s facilities, hands-on training and quality education for preparing her to succeed in the industry.

“The labs at Lakeland are awesome.

The Cenovus Energy Lab is such an amazing place to learn. I loved that aspects of heavy oil were mixed with the power engineering parts of this program. It meant that when I got on the job, I could recognize the equipment and recognize the different processes. I already knew the chemical reactions that were essential for the job.

My time at Lakeland prepared me so well for this position. It’s the exact job I want, it’s exactly what HOPE prepared me for. My time at Lakeland was so worth the time and investment and I enjoyed it so much. At the end of the day, I ended up getting my dream job,” said Noyce.

Lakeland alumna, Amanda Noyce wasn’t sure what to expect when she enrolled in Heavy Oil Power Engineering (HOPE). Noyce had no experience in the industry, wasn’t sure what exactly a power engineer did and didn’t know if she’d enjoy the program at all.

She ended up falling in love with it, and with the support of her instructors, landed her dream job at the Cenovus Energy Upgrader in Lloydminster.

“I did more research into what a power engineer does and it really interested me to get out of my comfort zone,” Noyce says. “I figured that at least I’d learn about motors and a little bit of plumbing and electrical.

Good life skills. But I ended up really enjoying it.”

Coming to Lakeland with an open mind, Noyce couldn’t help but feel a little anxious on her first day. She credits her instructors for helping her overcome those nerves and excel in her studies.

“I was terrified my first day,” Noyce confesses. “Coming into a program like this, where I had no previous knowledge, and as a woman. I didn’t know if I could do it. But my instructors really helped me to thrive. They were honestly the best part of my Lakeland experience. I could call them if I had questions about an assignment I was working on, even if it was late. They’d drop anything to help me. They’d stay late, come in early, and reach out on weekends. They went out of their way to make me feel like I was important.”

Staggering Gas Prices Hits The Pockets Of Albertans And Canadians

The price at the pump is currently hitting Albertans and all Canadian pockets hard as gas prices are soaring. Unfortunately, there is no end in sight any time soon as it is predicted that by the time summer rolls around it will be even worse.

Currently, as of April 26 gas prices in Vermilion as well as in the cities are sitting at approximately 122.5 L according to CAA. Last week, the price at the pump was 115.4 L so in just one week it has jumped .07 cents and it is expected to get much higher yet.

A year ago, gas prices plummeted to 063.5 L at the beginning of the pandemic, the lowest they have been since the 2008 financial crisis; due to a lower demand as people were not out travelling as much.

Supply and demand is one of the larg-

est reasons for fluctuations in gas prices.

Currently, we are still in the middle-to end of the pandemic, thus still causing a lower demand for gasoline as more people are working from home and have fewer places to travel as some businesses are still in a COVID restricted status.

The second cause of gas prices to plummet last year was the cost of crude oil. When COVID-19 hit, it rocked economies around the world causing OPEC and its allies to reduce the production of oil in an attempt to up the oil prices. Since last year, OPEC has not increased oil production fast enough to move with the increasing demand this year, therefore oil prices are currently sitting at around $60 US a barrel the highest it has been in over a year, and it is expected to climb even higher by summer with some predictions saying it could rise as high as $72 US per barrel.

Canadian oil producers have not helped the situation either. Canada was the world’s 4th largest producer of petroleum and other liquids in 2019, but in the first half of 2020, Canada’s production declined by approximately 20 per cent from its 2019 average of 5.5 million barrels per day. Canada’s production of petroleum and other liquids declined due to the global crude oil price drop, reduced demand for crude oil for refined petroleum products in Canada and the US, as well as the curtailments imposed by the government of Alberta, according to U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Another factor that is causing this hit to Albertans pockets is Trudeau’s carbon tax on fuels, and to top that off Trudeau plans to raise the carbon tax on fuel from $30 per tonne to $170 per tonne by 2030 in the attempt to exceed cutting greenhouse emissions by 30 per cent by 2030; which

could raise gas prices by more than 37.5 a litre by 2030.

Summertime travel as more restrictions let up will also increase the demand of fuel while the supply still lingers behind causing summertime gas prices to jump again.

If gas prices continue to rise as per predictions we might all be forced to find ways to reduce our cost of living so we can afford to drive ourselves to work, or we will be looking for alternate modes of transportation.

ronmental technicians, educational assistants and firefighters, health care aides, design consultants, teachers, and welders who strengthen the workforce and enrich the communities. According to Hanover Research’s analysis, the average Lakeland alumnus earns just over $9000 more per year than people without post-secondary education.

During the 2019-2020 academic year, 3298 people enrolled in credit programs at Lakeland and almost 1,050 students completed their program during the year.

With students spending on housing, food, travel, supplies and entertainment it generated $2.9 million for the region in revenue.

For Lakeland operations it adds $66.7 million to the economy. This amount is attributed to the spending on supplies and services, as well as the employment of more than 400 full-time employees, resulting in $42 million in salaries and benefits, according to Lakeland College. The college has also been named one of Alberta’s Top 70 Employers in January for the fifth consecutive year.

The college also states that it also supports the economy through its applied research efforts, particularly in crop, livestock and agriculture technology. The colleges recreation centres, performing arts theatres, residences, Equine Centre and other buildings and rooms which are used by community members, businesses and organizations are also crucial to the region.

“Lakeland’s value to our region and Alberta is indispensable. We help drive economic growth and rural sustainability,” stated Wainwright-Stewart.

Marwayne’s History

The name Marwayne is a combination of the first syllables of Marfleet and Waynefleet, the former being the family name of some of our original pioneers, the latter that of their native town in Lincolnshire, England. Settlement of our district began around 1903. On a scow built at the old Water’s mill in Edmonton, a number of future residents and their belongings, traveled the 200 mile journey down the Saskatchewan River producing ‘a most novel and interesting experience for these new arrivals from the old land.’

Volunteers Cleaning Up Alberta Highways

The 45th annual Highway Cleanup took place on Saturday, May 1 between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Volunteers wearing bright orange safety vests collected trash along Alberta highways to raise funds for community organizations. The organizations, which include 4-H clubs, Scouts, Girl Guides, schools, church organizations and other non-profit groups, earn $100 per kilometre cleaned. Volunteers took part in a safety training program, and were under adult supervision.

Last year, the Alberta government contributed $925,635 to 463 volunteer organizations involved in the highway cleanup. About 12,000 volunteers collected more than 32,000 bags of garbage while cleaning up more than 9,000 kilometres of Alberta roads.

The Alberta RCMP asked motorists to slow down in marked cleanup areas and to be aware of the added foot-traffic. The RCMP also increased patrols across provincial highways to enforce traffic safety and prevent speeding in these areas.

A Round-Up Of Success, Experience And New Connections

T h e S t u d e n t - M a n a g e d Fa r m a t Ve r m i l i o n ’s L a k e l a n d C o l l e g e – Powered by New Holland purebred, commercial beef, and equine units saw more than 126 bids during The Round-Up sale on March 27.

Previously known as Beef Day, the student-led sale featured 14 yearling Angus bulls, five purebred replacement heifers, 12 commercial Simmental/ Angus cross heifers, which averaged $4,500 per animal, and seven registered quarter horses, which averaged $11,600 per animal.

B o b b i - J o F o s t e r, a s e c o n d year animal science technology (AST) student in the beef major and the purebred unit ’s sales coordinator, says her team is thrilled with this year’s sale outcome despite the COVID-19 restrictions they faced. “ We moved the sale to a vir tual bidding system called DLMS. We also had an appointment booking system for prospective buyers who wanted to see our animals in person. My responsibilit y was creating the sale catalogue with my counterpart Kord Phillips. We promoted the event as much a s we c o u l d, an d t h e n d ur i n g t h e event, we were the ones on the block talking about each purebred animal,” says Foster. Each animal was featured

on the SMF units’ Facebook pages, respectively.

Since September 2020, the purebred and commercial beef units were responsible for developing their herd and selecting the ones to auction for their outstanding qualities, such as structural soundness and exceptional growth performance for the sale.

Also, the equine unit worked hard training their horses under saddle to produce versatile prospects. Their participation in The Round-Up was a welcomed and new dynamic feature. “ We pitched to the purebred and commercial beef units how our involvement in the sale c ould p otentially benefit all of us by attracting buyers interested in both horses and bulls.

We are super happy about our participation in the sale and the averages our horses brought in,” says Haley Ries, a second-year AST student in the equine major. Lakeland introduced the equine major to its AST program in 2019, and in 2020, added a unit to the SMF. Through the SMF and other beyondthe-classroom learning opportunities like The Round-Up, students develop t heir sk ill s an d est a b li s h in d u str y connections. “ The biggest benefit for me was being able to make industry connections with those big in the Black Angus

The owners of Burnt Rock Adventure Co. have been transforming the old Vermilion Standard building into their new outdoor adventure store and are hoping to open their doors in the week leading up to May long weekend.

Burnt Rock Adventure Co. will provide outdoor enthusiasts the opportunity to purchase top of line products such as pedal and electric hybrid bikes from Norco and HARO Bikes, North scooters and accessories, Longboards and skateboards from the GLOBE brand, canoes, kayaks and paddleboards from top manufactures such as Hellman Canoe & Kayak, Old Town Canoes Kayaks, Level Six and KAHUNA Paddleboards, and Aquaglide. Rising Construction Costs No Laughing Matter

You have heard the jokes and probably seen the social media memes about the rising cost of construction materials, particularly plywood and OSB, but as many in the construction industry will tell you, the increase is no laughing matter, and it’s not just lumber getting expensive.

Like so many aspects of the economy, the arrival of a pandemic has caused disruptions and chaos in all areas of the construction industry, from the cost of basic building supplies, to the availability of appliances and finishing materials. Wait times for materials are unpredictable and contribute to what in some cases can equal almost a 50 percent increase in costs since last spring. Many construction basics are seeing weekly price increases, with no end in sight. There can also be up to seven months delay in some appliances.

Do you want to pull out all the stops for Mother’s Day this year? Whether your mom lives nearby or far away, here are a few ways to celebrate the occasion.

National Education Week Striving For Excellence & Providing Choice For Students

If you have a good relationship with your children’s teachers, it can have a positive impact on your kids’ academic performance. Here are three tips to help foster effective communication with your children’s educators.

1. Respect their communication style Some teachers are at ease using text messaging, social networks and email to communicate with parents. Others are more traditional and prefer to rely on phone calls and scheduled meetings to relay important information. As much as possible, respect their preference and avoid inundating them with messages. While they’re invested in helping your child, they need to manage the rest of the class too.

2. Be courteous, calm and clear

Be polite when interacting with teachers and don’t undermine their authority in front of other people, especially your children. If you’re angry or frustrated with the teacher, try to calm down and then explain your position clearly. It’s likely that there’s been a misunderstanding and that a level-headed discussion will ease the situation.

3. Attend parent-teacher meetings Parent-teacher meetings allow you

to find out how your children are doing in school. These meetings, which typically take place once or twice during the school year, are beneficial as some topics are easier to discuss face to face. Plus, attending these meetings lets your children know you’re invested in their schooling.

If you follow these tips, you should be able to establish an open dialogue with your children’s teachers.

Letter To The Editor - COVID-19 And Fake News

It was good of Mr. McFadzean to agree that the world is indeed in the grips of a pandemic. However including diseases like cancer and diabetes under that definition is a bit of a stretch.

Mr. McFadzean makes some statements that don’t stand up to scrutiny. Take Sweden, the country he holds up as an example of why we don’t need lockdowns.

As of April 21, 2021 Sweden has the highest rate of infections of any of its European

neighbours. Were he to check Krisinformation.se the Swedish government website, he would find current restrictions there are more rigid than we currently have in Alberta.

He also conveniently fails to mention countries like New Zealand and Australia that had dramatic lockdowns and travel restrictions and now are back to near normal. The CBC news of April 27 showed a concert in New Zealand with 50,000 people in attendance.

As for Denis Rancourt, all one has to do is a little research, to see many articles debunking his pseudoscience about masks not working. Obviously they not going to be as effective as walking around in a haz-mat suit. Mr. McFadzean also fails to mention that Mr. Rancourt was fired from his position at the University of Ottawa.

I was unsure of what to make of his charts and graphs as the most current one is dated September 16, 2020, and lots has

happened since then.

If COVID 19 is indeed spread through aerosol transmission then it is only common sense that masks, and social distancing, and preventing gatherings of large groups, helps to prevent the spread of the disease.

Hopefully if we all follow the guidelines set out by the Alberta Heath Services and also get vaccinated, we can return to a new normal sometime soon.

To Sell Or Background Calves? – Introducing The BCRC Backgrounding Calculator

Beef Cattle Research Council Submitted

“Should I sell or background my calves?” is a question most cow-calf producers face every year. Producers need to project whether it will be profitable to feed their calves on a backgrounding program rather than sell them at weaning. There are many deciding factors including current calf prices, cost of gain, and projected feeder prices. These variables are all different for each producer, depending on their cattle, and their cost structure, therefore each operation needs to crunch their own numbers.

The Beef Cattle Research Council’s new Backgrounding Calculator can help make the decision. This decision-making tool is designed to identify economic opportunities and risks from backgrounding cattle.

Risks and Rewards Backgrounding Retaining ownership or backgrounding can give cow-calf producers greater market flexibility and additional revenue through heavier marketing weight. By retaining ownership, producers can also reap the benefits of the investments they have made in their calves through genetic selection, as well as other preconditioning-related practices like low-stress weaning. On the other hand, producers will have higher cost through added feed and labour, as well as higher price and performance risks.

Price risk comes from a change in the general price level and slide related to weight gain. A price slide is a phenomenon where cattle prices, often expressed in dollar per hundredweight ($/cwt), tend to decrease as an animal’s weight increases.

The magnitude of the price drop is affected by feed grain prices. In general, when feed grains are relatively inexpensive, cattle feeders see more incentives to turn cheap feed into beef and are willing to pay more for light-weight cattle. When feed grains are expensive, it makes more sense to put as many pounds as possible on the cattle before they reach the feedlot, which supports heavier-feeder prices and encourages backgrounding.

Performance risk comes from the uncertainty of how calves will perform. Average daily gain, total pounds gained, feeding efficiency, and death loss can have a big impact on the cost of gain during the backgrounding period. If the typical performance of calves is unknown, backgrounding can be disappointing with a higher cost of production than planned. Having the facilities, labour and expertise to address the production risk is critical to being successful.

Scenarios and Results The below examples demonstrate how to use the Backgrounding Calculator, and how prices and performance affect backgrounding decisions and results.

The potential net return from backgrounding a steer calf weaned at 550 lbs in mid-October in Western Canada are evaluated for three backgrounding periods (90, 120 and 150 days). With spring upon us, Spartan’s are navigating the ever-changing weather like pros. We come in shorts and teeshirts on Monday, Tuesday we come wearing toques and mitts. The challenge of dressing for spring in Alberta has kept us on our toes this year. April has brought much fun and laughter amongst students and staff as we try to keep our spirits up amid this third wave of Covid. When you can’t take the students to the farm, you bring the farm to the students! Mrs. Rogers brought two baby lambs to school for students to meet.They were very cute, and talkative.

Taylor & Emily Bodurka brought baby chicks into their classroom for students to see. Nothing says spring like freshly hatched baby chicks! On April Fools Day, many of our Spartan pranksters were hard at work! Mrs. L. Martin brought a “delicious mystery treat” (chocolate covered brussel sprouts) for her students to sample.

Turns out the joke was on her, as many of students gobbled them up happily! Mrs. Schmit had her class do a “special” spelling test at warp speed, the kiddos could hardly believe how fast she was going and were relieved that it was all just for fun! Ms. Svenungard took it easy on her students, but did pull a prank on fellow teacher Mrs. Lysons. Ms. Svenungard snuck into school early in the morning on April Fools and completely switched Mrs. Lysons’ display bulletin boards so that everything was

hanging upside down! A good laugh was had by Mrs. Lysons, until it was time to fix it… And finally, leading by example with pranks, Mr. Chase sent an email to staff on April Fools Day informing us that we would all have to complete “accountability” tests to ensure we have a thorough understanding of the content matter we are teaching.

It was a very official looking document, well played Mr. Chase!

Earth Day was on April 22 and Spartans across the grade levels learned and developed their understanding of what it means to care for our earth and ways that we can reduce waste. Kindergarten kids listened to Dr. Suess’ classic the “Lorax” and created “recycled art” using newspapers. Grade 4 students in Mrs. Despins class wrote Earth Day pledges, where they promised to do one small thing that will help our world. Students in Mrs. Schmit’s Grade 2&3 class engaged in a “Litterless Lunch Challenge,” packing their lunch in reusable lunch containers, and Ms. Svenungard’s reinforced good habits like using both sides of the paper and mini-whiteboards daily to minimize paper usage. Finally, a big thank you to Mrs. Moir, who volunteers her time to empty our school and classroom paper and bottle recycling bins weekly. Chief Seattle’s words of wisdom inspire us to continue to educate ourselves about greener practices and sustainability, “Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web we do to ourselves.

All things are bound together...All things connect.”

Elementary Declamation was on April 26 & 27 this year. The students worked hard on learning, memorizing, and presenting their poems. The competition remained at the classroom level this year, as the final presentation was cancelled due to Covid.

Students still had fun performing and watching their friends recite some wonderful poetry.

Lloydminster Pitch-In Week

The City of Lloydminster hosted a community clean up from April 26 to May 2, called Pitch-In Week. Members of the community pitched-in to clean up garbage throughout the community of Lloydminster, and then dispose it properly.

“COVID-19 certainly like everything else affected how this event happened, due to the nature of the number of volunteers and the closeness of working with people. Volunteers sometimes take things out of peoples cars or trunks, or participants are opening their own vehicles, so it is really challenging to maintain social distancing and provide the service and the opportunity that the hazardous waste round-up brings,” commented Mayor of Lloydminster, Gerald Aalbers.

Last year, the City of Lloydminster cancelled the event due to COVID-19.

This year there were 126 registered h ou seh o l d s wit h 5 42 par t i c i pant s reported. As well as, there were also three requests from schools with a reported 575 participants wanting to participate, totaling 1,117 participants.

In an effort to stay within the COVID19 restrictions, the cit y decided to create Pitch-In Kits that include a safety orientation and sharps protocol along with a sharps kit, garbage bags, and nitrile gloves, colouring pages for children and a token of appreciation.

The 90-day option remains profitable, but the net return shrinks significantly to $8/ head. This means any addition price or performance risk could easily put the net return to a negative level.

Backgrounding decisions should be based on current calf prices, cost of gain, and projected feeder prices.

These variables are all different for each producer, depending on their cattle and their cost structure, therefore each operation needs to use their own specific values.

Producers should continually monitor prices and input costs throughout the feeding period as these factors change, to ensure cattle are marketed at the optimum time. In addition, farmers should consider the potential tax and financial implications of retaining ownership and discuss their decision with their accountants. Producers may also consider using price insurance or contracting with a feedlot. By using risk management tools and price projections, producers can try and optimize the rewards of backgrounding cattle while balancing their risks.
