A field fire occurred north of Islay, in the early afternoon of April 20. Islay Fire Department was the first to arrive on scene and made the decision to call Clandonald Fire Department for back-up.

After arriving on scene a third call went out to Dewberry Fire & Rescue to help contain the fire. A request for the County of Vermilion River Community Peace Officers was also dispatched to provide traffic management and safeguard responding emergency vehicles. A fourth alarm was assigned to Vermilion Fire and Rescue for additional wildland units and water.

Public Works, local farmers, and nearby industrial heavy equipment operators joined the fight and cut fire breaks

around the perimeter while firefighters gained headway on the flames.

Over the span of five hours, four departments/stations, and over 31 firefighters later, the fire was contained and extinguished.

“The fire was investigated and the cause of the fire was actually a previous burn (with permit) that occurred in November 2020. The pile had sat for the entire winter, but yesterday it just flared up under the pile and managed to get tossed around by the wind before landing on nearby grass that caught fire. The wind pushed the fire to the northeast. Due to the wind and the absolute dry conditions, it ate up 581,413 sq m of land before we could get it stopped,” stated Kirk Hughes, Firefighters on scene. Town Of Vermilion Council Update

The Town Council held a very busy regular meeting the evening of April 20, here are some of the highlights.

Mayor Caroline McAuley declared April 18 - 24, as National Volunteer Week, acknowledging the incredible contributions that volunteers make, which enhances Vermilion’s strengths as a community. Mayor McAuley also declared May 16-22, as National Public Works Week, a motion put forward by

Councillor McCullough.

Several Manager reports were delivered this week, including the Chief Administrative Officer. Thanks to funding from the federal government, Community Futures of Lloydminster and Region was able to help 21 Vermilion businesses get through some of the financial difficulties the pandemic has caused. The Regional Relief and Recovery Funds were designated as tailored small business loans to help rural businesses that did not qualify for other federal business support programs.

Lakeland College Welcomes New Bison Calf

Lakeland College Vermilion is establishing a Bison Program as a result of a $4 million donation from Armin & Rita Mueller that was announced February of last year. The donation allows Lakeland College to establish a bison ranch and develop a curriculum which will be delivered to students in the Animal Science Technology program where students will learn about a livestock production system that many have never been exposed to. As stated on the Lakeland College website, the college will become the only postsecondary institution in Canada where students, with mentorship from faculty, manage commercial-sized bison, beef, crop, dairy, and sheep enterprises.

The new bison calf has sparked excite-

ment for both students and staff for the upcoming bison program.

“Course development is already in progress and plans are to deliver a bison production course in the upcoming academic year as well as embed other bison competencies in multi-species courses such as Animal Handling, Welfare & Ethics and Diseases and Treatments,” stated Geoff Brown, Dean of Lakeland College.

There will be a Student Managed Farm bison unit formed when the Animal Science Technology program students enter into their second year of study in the fall of 2022, at that point the students will be taking part in all activities that relate to running a bison herd to gain hands-on skills and knowledge that will give them a full picture on how a bison operation is

managed for optimum profitability.

“So far the college has seen only a handful of calves born from their 200 head of bison, which are currently residing on two different ranches while the College sources the land base for the enterprise.

An 85 per cent weaning rate is common for a commercial bison herd once it is

established, although we are expecting a lower number of calves this year due to the fact that we have a higher proportion of heifers than an average herd. Most of the calves will be sold but replacement heifers will be held back to keep the herd numbers at the level that can be sustained by our land base,” commented Brown.

Eulogy of Steve Ewanec On April 15, 2021, Mr. Steve Ewanec of Myrnam passed away suddenly at the age of 82 years. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Adeline; son, Kurt (Samantha); 2 daughters, Tammy (Morris) Beeks & Shelley (John) Neumann; 8 grandchildren, Holly, Cory (Gina), Ryan (Wendy), Landin (Kelby), Joe (Renea), Daralea, Tanisha & Amanda in Heaven; 1 great-grandchild, Sloan & one on the way; special family members, Sandra Homeniuk & Sherry (Cory) Cormier & their daughters, Shana & Emily; 3 brothers & 1 sister, Bill (Hilda), Henry (Shirley), Nadia (Jan) Sumyk & Nick (Linda); 2 sisters-in-law, Sylvia & Liz Ewanik; aunt, Mary Kitt; numerous nieces & nephews.

Mr. Ewanec was predeceased by his granddaughter, Amanda Bruneau; parents, Stanley & Nancy; 3 sisters, Lillian (Joe) Bilyk, Mary (John) Yarmuch & Julie (Bill) Shpeley; 2 brothers, Mike & Harry.

Steve was cherished for his love, generosity, and leadership. He was not only a pillar in his family but was a pillar of the community.

Steve started his path with humble beginnings, born in the Pathfinder district on January 29, 1939 to Stanley and Nancy Ewanec. You would not find a harder working family, being homesteaders from the former Galacia area, which is now known as Ukraine. But Steve and his 9 brothers and sisters still found the time to get themselves into mischief. In the snowy winter fields, Steve and his siblings would hop on their sleigh and hold onto the family milk cow’s tail to pull them around the yard. Well, it was all fun and games until they pulled that cow’s tail right off! When they weren’t dismantling the cows in winter, in the summer they often would steal the fresh cream their mother intended to sell to make crow pies in the field, we can only imagine the lickens they got from their mothers’ broom when they got home.

It was also in childhood that Steve’s love for music was born. Playing in a band with his brothers, Harry and Henry, and his neighbours, Harry and Pete, they would tour around the countryside entertaining family and folks alike. Steve was a master on the harmonica and accordion, and was still very talented until his last days. His grandson Cory was fortunate to listen and watch in wonder as he turned a dusty old relic of an accordion he found in an antique store into a beautiful music that friends and family danced and sang along to, a memory which will always be cherished. He loved Ukrainian polka music, we can still hear him singing and sometimes yodelling along to his favourite tunes on CFCW’s Ukrainian hour while cruising along the backroads in his van. Well at least it better have been in his van because Adeline wouldn’t hack it hearing that in the house! Now when anyone goes for a drive to check the cows or to look at the wildlife, we will be singing along with you, Steve.

Steve had a work ethic surpassed by no one. He left home as a young man to make his mark in Edmonton, working construction, but very quickly returned to his passion in the countryside.

Steve and Adeline married on June 3, 1961, and hand in hand they worked the land and animals together, forging a beautiful life from the ground up, and welcomed their three children, Kurt, Tammy and Shelley into the world. But their clan wasn’t quite fulfilled until Sandra and Sherry joined the home a few years later to complete their family.

With his new farm hands in tow, Steve raised his family and his farm. As the family grew, so did the farm, and the family recalls Steve keeping a multitude of different livestock over the years in every nook and cranny he could fit them. Whether it was cattle, turkeys, pigs, chickens, goats, pheasants, the family pet goose, goosey lucy, and even Shetland ponies, Steve raised them all. But one Shetland pony in particular gave him extra grief. That’s because he once purchased a specialty bore pig, one with big floppy ears, and he had it sent all the way from Ontario by train to Wainwright, where he excitedly picked it up and brought it home to join the farm family. Well, that Shetland pony wasn’t too happy about the new addition, and ate those big floppy ears right off of the bore!

And it wasn’t just animals, Steve liked to try all kinds of new things. Crops, recipes, homebrew, garden vegetables, and fruits. He had the most impressive orchard, he’s the only person we know in Alberta to have successfully grown grapes, or to have an Oak tree in his yard. An agrologist somehow caught wind of this and even came to Steve’s yard to verify it was an Oak since those aren’t even supposed to grow here.

Steve had a true pioneering family, they grew multiple gardens, picked fruit by hand, smoked their game meats, and drank their homebrew. Everything they had was made from the land.

Despite all of the hard work and dedication to his family and farm, Steve always made time to contribute to his community. Working with local neighbours as a young man, Steve was instrumental in the establishment of Pathfinder Community Hall, a place which became his second home and the people which, if they weren’t already, became family. For decades it brought Steve a sense of joy and pride to volunteer, creating events that brought people together from far and wide to share in food, dancing, laughter and stories. A task his son, Kurt now carries on in honour of Steve, with an equal sense of joy and pride.

Steve was remembered as a hunting enthusiast. So much so that Adeline said he was away on a hunting trip before the birth of his daughter, Tammy. Well Steve quickly popped by to meet the newborn, and carried on back into the hunt 2 days later. His son Kurt shared in this passion, with Steve taking him on his first big trip when Kurt was 14 years old. Kurt missed 2 whole weeks of school to go up north with his dad, and they didn’t bag a single animal. But not all their trips where a complete shut-out, Kurt got a little better, and the family remembers one trip which produced 9 moose in one day. Steve’s hunting pursuits continued for many decades and generations, and his grandsons Landin and Joe have fond memories or their hunting trips with Steve, including the trip where Joe shot his first buck. It’s a wonder Joe was even awake enough to make that shot since Kurt kept everyone up with his snoring, even Steve wanted his own room after the first night.

Steve was also an avid trapper. His daughter Tammy lovingly recalls riding on the on the back of her dad’s orange ski-doo, checking up and down the trap lines for fresh catches. Skinning their finds in the old house, and rubbing the muskrat pelts together until they shined, to get extra profits. With the extra pelt money in hand, Steve proudly drove around the 3 three kids in his blue single cab truck he purchased with the money, each in their specific assigned spot of course.

Steve was a natural story-teller, who captivated anyone listening. He would make you laugh, make you cry, but would always leave you with the finest advice to guide your own life. This is how his youngest daughter, Shelley remembers her dad. The wisest man she ever knew, he instilled in her the understanding of how to make something out of nothing, and it’s not money you need in life to be rich.

Just as Steve always welcomed anyone into his home to sit with him at the kitchen table for a drink, we know he will be waiting for us, with a chair and a glass when we meet again, and will always be watching over us, just as he always did.

The 1930 Blizzard

Snowstorms a r e n o t h i n g n ew fo r Ver m i l i o n, o r any where else in Alberta. Even this year we have dealt with plenty of them but today we have modern technology and proper roads to help us get through them.

Back in 1930, when the worst blizzard in 20 years hit, there was none of that and the storm literally ground the community to a halt.

It was on Oct. 16 when the snow began to fall, and it did not stop. Farmers in the middle of threshing the fields were forced to stop, and it was not known if they would get

back to it for the next six months as winter seemed to have settled in for Vermilion and district.

One of the worst aspects of the blizzard was that it took out 60 kilometres of telephone lines from Vermilion towards Edmonton, and the only line that was still working was by way of St. Paul into the northern sections of the province and then down into Edmonton.

Due to the high winds, drifts two to three feet high were reported on the roads, making it impossible for any vehicle to drive through.

The blizzard was described by the Edmonton Journal as, “the worst experience the district has had in the last 20 years.”

With recent headsets becoming very user friendly anyone could find themselves at home, in a world of their wildest dreams.

virtual reality headset is like looking through a pair of ski goggles into another world. First-time users are prompted to set a boundary in their physical space. This is done quite simply by drawing out an area with the provided hand tracked controllers. Once enabled you are ready to walk, skip and jump around in virtual reality (just be careful not to trip over the cat).

There are countless amazing experiences to download and try, from sitting under the sea with whales, to shooting zombies in a post-apocalyptic hellscape. Even the most mundane things while in Virtual Reality can reveal new excitement. In the Job Simulator game, the user is tasked with performing a variety of jobs. The beauty of virtual reality is if you intentionally fail these jobs there are no realworld consequences, so something like replacing a client’s washer fluid with gasoline is a perfectly viable way to play.

Although these experiences are great alone, there is something amazing about jumping into the Gorilla Tag game with a bunch of friends and chasing each other through the treetops. When shared, VR becomes the perfect way to connect with people from a distance. With social apps like VR chat, connecting with family and friends feels more interactive than something like Facetime.

Another issue was the rail lines, which were completely blocked, which ground northern Prairie traffic to a halt for several days. One CPR train was delayed for 36 hours in reaching Edmonton. Originally, the train was going to arrive in the city at 6:50 a.m. on the Friday, but it would not arrive until 7:25 p.m. on the Saturday. Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the middle of the cake comes out clean. Allow the cake to completely cool before icing with cream cheese icing. If you use 9 inch round baking pans the cooking time may be shorter.

Weekly online sessions began in M ar c h a s N e s t Pr o j e c t e d u c ato r s opened conversations and provided tips surrounding mindfulness, journaling for wellness, and will wrap up the series of sessions with the topic of

“The response has been wonderful,” said Nest Project educator and c o -founder Kerri Lorenson. The sessions have a max of 40 participants to foster a more intimate space where m o r e c o nve r s at i o n s c a n h a p p e n .

According to Lorenson, each session has 20-40 participants.

Choosing joy sessions began via ZOOM on April 20 at 7 p.m. and will c on c lud e on M ay 4. Ses sions are recorded and registration will be open

Chairman of the Board Annual Report: “As I prepared my report for this AGM, I looked back to where we were one short year ago. The pandemic was relatively new and we facilitated an unusual format for our AGM to satisfy government requirements and not rely on technology that not all our Board members were comfortable using.

One year later we are able to meet but are still dealing with the pandemic and things appear not to be returning to “normal” for some time. Our facilitators have faced difficult challenges this past year to keep connected with clients. Our Board has been able to meet regularly once again with masking and social distancing protocols in place. Technology has allowed us to access more training opportunities and we are looking into how technology might enable us to broaden our groups outreach into new areas. I wish to thank all the agencies that support us and our work in their communities. Thank you to each and every one of the board members for your commitment to continuing this work. I am especially thankful for the work of our facilitators who are our frontline people and the face of our group Thank you.

2021 Outdoor Soccer Season Update

The Vermilion Soccer Association (VSA) Executive met on April 18, to review and discuss the operations for the upcoming 2021 Outdoor Soccer season. When the information was gathered and reviewed, it was the decision of the Executive to suspend the opening and operation of the 2021 Outdoor Season for the following reasons: As result of the Alberta Health order (CMOH Order 10-2021: Section 8.15)

requiring all coaching staff to be trained for sporting organizations, VSA was required to have volunteer coaches be in process of or completing age groups specific training, this requirement resulted in lower than expected volunteers and therefore we have not been able to acquire the sufficient quota of coaches.

The numbers of volunteers required to successfully operate a sporting club like VSA were not attainable this season to assist with the needed work such as field preparation and all related COVID-19

protocols to be managed during soccer sessions twice a week.

The COVID-19 case numbers in our local area have risen in the recent weeks and have impacted the planning and operation of many clubs/organizations, businesses and everyday events. Families are worried and are feeling uncertain, VSA acknowledges this and wishes to support families by reducing stress and worry related to participating in soccer events (return to train).

VSA president, Kristin Ward, acknowl-

edged the families who continue to support soccer and VSA saying, “On behalf of the VSA Executive, we wish to thank our families for their patience and ongoing support.

We are hopeful that life will settle soon and that we may reopen soccer and return to play as we know and love it! We hope to see you all on the pitch spring 2022. Take care and stay safe.”

Tunes & Tailgates Fundraiser Rescheduled

Due to the latest provincial travel restrictions and COVID-19 concerns, the Tunes and Tailgates Drive-In Concert has been rescheduled to July 10, in Elk Point. The Annual Trail Ride event is still going ahead as planned on May 8, starting at 11 a.m.

Drive-In Events have been permitted in Alberta throughout the pandemic and considered safe because it is something many people can enjoy together with plenty of physical distance. However, with the latest COVID-19 concerns and travel restrictions out of British Columbia where the performers reside, it was decided to reschedule the event.

“While we are disappointed with the rescheduling of the event, the decision was made with the health and safety of all participants and the community at large as the top priority. And moving the event to July may bring more sunshine,

and less COVID-19 restrictions.

Either way, it is going to be a great event!” commented Sheila Moore, Morcomm PR & Events.

While this decision comes at a time of collective uncertainty, 2nd Chance Trail Ride Society and Mussell Records take the safety and health of their guests, performers, volunteers, and community very seriously.

Rescheduling the event will enable the performers to safely travel out of province, and hopefully in the coming weeks we will see restrictions lift to provide the experience that our guests and partners deserve in a safe environment.

All proceeds from the drive-in concert will support the 2nd Chance Trail Ride

Society and their mission to raise awareness and continue supporting transplant patients through their journey.

At the age of four, Lloydminster resident, Jarrod Russell was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor.

“In 1980, I was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor. With hope, faith and determination, I battled it with my friends and family at my side. This is an important part of my journey and the experience has helped me develop into the person I am today. I am a survivor and even though I was left with a weak right side and I developed epilepsy, I am here today,” stated Russell.

Russell went on to express that he wants to use his strengths to fight for great kids that should be living life and not fighting for it.

“I am raising funds to help support the SickKids Foundation in its work to develop treatments and finally find a cure for childhood cancer,” Russell explained. “Some-

times the greatest inspirations come from the smallest people. Your support will change little lives.”

Jamie Lamon, Director of Special Events at SickKids Foundation states that cancer is the largest killer of Canadian children from disease and over 1,400 Canadian children are diagnosed with cancer every year.

“Thanks to riders like Jarrod, we’re fueling groundbreaking research to save lives and give kids the brighter future they deserve,” said Lamon.

Russell also added that approximately three children die of cancer every week in Canada.

“That sucks, and cancer has robbed too many children of their childhoods. Stories like this are why I ride!” exclaimed Russell.

As an adult in his 40’s, Russell will be participating in the Great Cycle Challenge in August and he will be riding for nine-yearold Braxton Weidman from Birmingham,

We are one step closer to the installation of the new Ice Plant with the demolition of the old plant that has been keeping the arena, stadium and curling rink in service for almost 60 years.

Cimco Refrigeration has completed the demolition and decommissioning of the old facility, and the project is presently on target for an August 2021 installation date of the new equipment. The hope is to be ready for next winter’s activity season.

The Vermilion Facility Enhancement Board, the volunteer group raising funds for the project has been able to secure funding from several sources, including many communit y families, The County of Vermilion River, The Vermilion Curling Club through the “Grow the Ice Plant” harvest, and The Vermilion Rotary Club. Shawn O’Shea who resides east of Edmonton was given the honour of having his Non-Typical American Elk examined by Pope & Young and awarded the title of World Record Non-Typical American Elk on March 20.

Ac c o r d i n g to Po p e & Yo u n g a n i nter n at i o n ally recognized archery only trophy organization, O’Shea bow-har vested the impressive elk in the Minburn county which scored an incredible 449 4/8” on September 14, 2020. Apparently, O’Shea first located the bull in 2017 while examining trail cameras which had snapshots of the nocturnal bull elk. On September 13, O’Shea heard the bull fighting with another bull and tried to harvest him on that day but due to the sun going down he was unable to take the shot. The next day O’Shea was

Even under those circumstances the spike in deaths from Covid 19 are not historically unusual, certainly nothing comparable to the Spanish flu where at least 3% of the world population died. So far Covid 19 deaths are 0.04% of the world population. (See Graph 2) I fail to understand why Denis Rancourt’s article is poor quality and misinformation when he references peer reviewed papers of randomized, controlled trials which found the masks are ineffective in stopping contagion of viral infections. He also explains the facts about the size of virons relative to the mesh of surgical and cloth masks. The virons are simply too small to be contained by these masks which explains the results of the trials.

You then list a number of things that will slow the spread of the virus. I don’t know anyone who is opposed to washing hands, or staying home when sick or vulnerable.

What many of us object to is mandated masks, social distancing, and lock downs none of which has been shown the stop the

spread of a virus. There are many comparisons between jurisdictions that had no restrictions to others that mandated masks and restricted gatherings. Here is one: (See Graph 3) The federal government has microbiology centres with labs for highly contagious diseases. Workers do not enter these

labs with masks. They use full body suits with a self contained breathing apparatus which maintains positive pressure in the suits. I would suggest that anyone who is concerned about being infected with Covid 19 use one of these suits and leave the rest of us alone.

Shannon Stubbs Blasts Irresponsible Liberal Budget

Submitted On Monday, the Liberal Government released a budget with $354 billion in new federal debt since 2020, and $154 billion in deficit projected for 2021-22 alone. The federal debt will hit $1.2 trillion within the year, meaning every man, woman, and child in Canada is now responsible for $33,000 in federal debt.

“It’s almost incomprehensible that it’s been more than two years since the last budget, and that the Liberals have only seen fit to give Canadians two brief fiscal snapshots during a time

of historic economic challenges, and unprecedented government spending. The country’s rising cost of living, job losses, and tax hikes means, for most Lakelanders, their savings are stretched thin and their futures are uncertain,” said Member of Parliament, Shannon Stubbs.

Stubbs also pointed out that there was no plan for reopening or to secure Canada’s economic future.

“This budget needed to include a concrete plan for the private sector and for entrepreneurs to do what they do

best: create jobs and provide for their families. Instead, Canadians got the rude wakeup call that this Government will be saddling their grandchildren with more deficits and more debt,” said Stubbs.

The budget includes $101.4 billion in new spending, but spending on Liberal par tisan priorities, using ta xpayer dollars to promote the Liberal re-election campaign. This spending was not stimulus spending focused on creating jobs, and did not cut taxes or reduce red tape for Canadians or Canadian

businesses.

“I personally believe that all workers and all businesses are essential to Canada’s economy,” Stubbs stated.

“People in Lakeland want to know that if they work hard, they can do better, and for government to remember that it doesn’t have its own money. It all comes out of Canadians’ pockets. This Liberal budget doesn’t help the constituents I represent. It means inevitably higher taxes, higher costs, fewer jobs, and future generations left to pay the bills.”

We are proud to be a vital force in the economic recovery for Canada. By educating our local and regional students, Lakeland College plays a large role in rural sustainability and economic development. A rural community that is vibrant and sustainable is instrumental to the growth, prosperity and quality of life of all Canadians.

Our recent student survey indicated that 89 per cent of students were satisfied with their program of study and 96 per cent said they’d recommend Lakeland College to others. Enrollment numbers look good for the fall semester and applications are up from the same time last year.

The results of our recent Economic Impact

report are as follows: Lakeland adds $130.6 million to the local economy each year.

John, a single parent, finally found the courage to call the number on a card he had picked up at the mall. He’d had the card for awhile, but today realized he had to do this for his two kids. He’d had a job for three years and recently got laid off. He worked on commission and just had enough to pay his bills, but not for the unexpected stuff.

He had to work and went out looking every day after walking his kids to school. He had earned a few dollars shoveling snow and helping a friend move, and did use the food bank. It helped a little. Then three days ago, his daughter lost her glasses and without insurance, he had little choice but

The Superintendent’s Public Speaking Contest has been held for several years now. This year it is still

to reach out for help. Jennie was in grade 5 and needed her glasses for school.

Today when he walked the kids to school, he told the school staff about the glasses and having a tough time. They asked if he had heard of Hearts and Hands and suggested he call us...which he did.

His call went to message but he didn’t leave one. A little later his phone rang. When he answered, he was asked if he had called Hearts and Hands. He said he had. There were some questions but he was told he need answer only those he was comfortable with. The delivery process began.

He was offered fresh fruit and vegetables; meat, dairy and eggs: basics such as flour, sugar, can goods and dry goods;

condiments; laundry and cleaning needs; personal products such as deodorant, shampoo, toothbrushes and toilet paper; personal hygiene products for Jennie, as well as a basic cookbook and a local services directory. What his family received could not pay his bills or for Jennie’s glasses replacement, but would hopefully keep them going for a month. That evening a volunteer driver delivered the boxes needed to John’s home. Wearing masks because of COVID like the driver, John and the kids helped carry them in.

Just as importantly, John was introduced to other resources and some assistance in navigating them. He learned that there are people who care, and it gave him HOPE.

John’s story is loosely based on one of the over 200 deliveries that have been made by Hearts and Hands since 2016.

With the communities support, we are able to help single individuals, families, seniors, and those homeless in our community and surrounding area. If you are interested in learning more, or would like to be an occasional driver please call 780-581-0521.

ROADSIDE MOWING & HAYING The County of Vermilion River will be mowing all developed roads between July 15 and August 31, 2021. Mowing will start in the NE third of the County (Islay, Kitscoty and Blackfoot) and proceed North and West, finishing in the SE third of the County.

A permit is not required to hay County roadsides, however, all work must be completed (hay cut, baled and bales removed) before July 15 to allow for mowing.

The Grade 4 winner was Autumn Jaremco, the Grade 5 representative was Aariez Khan and in Grade 6 it was Jalynn Westman. These three students spoke before Mr. Anhorn and Mrs. Doherty, and they determined that Jalynn would go on to represent VES in the contest. We congratulate Jalynn and wish her the best when she competes on April 28.

VIBE is hosting the annual Mental Health Art Celebration within our school. All students from kindergarten to Grade 6 are encouraged to enter a piece of art, painting, drawing, collage, sculpture, etc. that showcases what mental health means to them.

Every student who enters will receive a prize and their art work will be displayed in the school during the month of May. The deadline to enter is April 26.

With many events not happening at our school this year, as well as many people not going to events as they would have in the past, our spending at school has been somewhat different as well. As a result, we have some extra funds available that we wouldn’t normally have. With the extra funds, we have purchased some additional resources, some furniture and some interactive panels. The interactive panels will begin to replace our aging Smartboards.

We expect more Smartboard replacements over the next few years.

2021 Lloydminster Region Health Foundation Muck Run Cancelled

We are sad to announce that the 2021 Muck Run has been cancelled. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic the Lloydminster Region Health Foundation is unable to safely run the even this year.

raised over $100,000. The Muck Run is a 5km route with mud, slime, and water. In 2019, the Health Foundation introduced the very popular Mini Muckers, a Muck Run made for kids five years old and up.

Malcolm Radke, CEO of the Health Foundation stated, “We know it’s a really fun event and would have been great this year with a

nice and early spring but we have to consider the participants safety first. We appreciated the support received last year when we went digital, but feel it’s best to use our time to support our healthcare community right now.

We know there is a bright future for lots of fun events in our community and know everyone looks forward to returning to the run next

The St. Paul Agricultural Society successfully kicked off the spring High School Rodeo Season last weekend, hosting the Junior and High School Rodeo at the St. Paul Corral for the 23rd year.

This rodeo, one of the first ones of the spring season, saw over 200 students from grades 6 to 12 participate in the annual event April 16 - 18.

Like so many typical events and sport seasons, rodeos in Alberta have had to make some changes as to how they operate. After receiving an exemption from Alberta Health Services (AHS) on April 10, the rodeo followed some very strict guidelines to allow competitors and their coaches to safely participate inside the arena. On April 14, AHS released a seven page guideline reference for rodeo organizers to follow to ensure health regulations around COVID are the same throughout the province.

New Fire Truck for Paradise Valley Coming Soon

After many years of planning and fundraising, Paradise Valley’s Fire Department has successfully secured a new rescue truck that will arrive later this spring. This 4 x 4 truck, which will provide the department with the tools and resources needed to perform emergency auto extractions will be arriving from Fort Garry Industries in Manitoba hopefully in June, with an anticipated ready to use date of September 1.

Paradise Valley Fire Chief, Nicholas Dobson explained that to prepare for the arrival of this unit, the volunteer firefighters have undergone training for heavy extractions, as well as grain extractions.

With an average of 50 call outs a year, this training and equipment will prove invaluable to the department’s ability to respond to calls within their area.

Acquiring this truck did not happen overnight; the department has been fundraising and planning for this type of

rescue vehicle for over a decade. Dobson stated “We fundraised the money over the years with our community supporting our fundraising over the past ten years because our long term goal was this project of a rescue truck.”

Paradise Valley’s residents have supported the department’s fundraising efforts very generously. Not only has the community contributed to the fundraising, the firefighters themselves have too.

Since 2010, 93 per cent of firefighter’s wages have been donated back to the department, which has helped in the purchase of a Suburban fully equipped with medical equipment, and a Pick up truck with a skid unit attached to it.

These generous efforts by the community and the firefighters, in combination with money from the Village of Paradise Valley and the County of Vermilion River’s Protective Services have led to the accomplishment of a vital long term goal! Watch for a follow up story once the truck arrives later this year!

Roadside spraying will focus in Spray Area 3, but we will be selectively spraying noxious weeds and brush throughout the County.

If you want to control weeds and brush in front of your property rather than have the County spray, complete the annual No-Spray Agreement by May 31, 2021. Agreements are available at www.vermilion-river.com or by phoning the County Office.

The Vermilion Fair just would not feel complete without the parade. The pancake breakfast and fanciful floats are a sure-fire way to get into the fair spirit. These events don’t just happen on their own however and The Vermilion Ag Society would like to thank the committees and volunteers that allow these events to run so smoothly each year. I know I have many fond memories of bringing my lawn chair out to sit on the curbside and collect candy and see the floats, tractors, and performers go by. We want to thank the parade committee for all they do for the community. Thank you to the volun-

teers who organize and support the parade throughout the year, as well as on parade day, committee members, street directors, judges, police department, town workers.

There would be no parade without the hard work of all these people. The parade is considered town tradition, and it is important to keep tradition alive. Another time we see tradition being kept alive is during the threshing demo.

The threshing demonstration is a great way to celebrate farming traditions. The threshing machine is widely thought to be a key advancement in agriculture, which allowed for large scale farming on the prairies. Although it was quite labour intensive

it allowed for larger amounts of grain to be harvested at one time than ever before.

Many who attend the event remember the days where it took many days with lots of volunteers to do 100 acres and the suppers that followed were always the best after a hard day’s work. For others, the demonstration is something they have never seen before but acts as a history lesson in the way farms used to operate. Whichever side of the board you fall on there is always something to learn at the threshing demonstration. Border City Connects’ Polar Bear Splash announced that the 2021 Virtual Polar Bear Splash was another great success! The 24 participants were able to raise a grand total of $20,000, meeting the fundraising goal.

Participants were entered into three contest categories; Highest Donation Amount Raised, Best Video/Best Splash, and Best Costume. The winner of Best Splash was Jason Whiting, featuring the snow making cannon. Synergy Credit Union won Best Costume after their staff dressed up and poured water from the top of a ladder. Cathy Kinsmen won the Highest Donation Amount Raised, as well as the local Lloydminster Co-op Cup. Each winner won a custom private dinner by a red seal chef for a party of eight.
