First Annual Easter Egg Hunt

The Vermilion & District Chamber of Commerce was evaluating current events for their first quarter of the year and as they currently do not have any events in that time frame they decided to host community Easter Egg Hunts that are being sponsored by various local businesses.

The Hunts will be held on separate days with Vermilion’s eggs being hidden on April 2, Mannville’s hidden

on April 3 and Kitscot y ’s on April 4; there will be 200 eggs filled with Candy, goodies, gift certificates, and Chamber Cash in each community. “ We will also have an event on April 6 at Shoppers Drug Mart where visitors will have the opportunity to search for an item that is priced as $0, if they find the item they get to keep it. There is only one item and it is valued at $50,” explained Office Manager Leanne Mar tin, for the Chamber.

Vermilion Chrysler will be hosting an event on April 7 where one winner will also take home a prize valued at $50.

To par ticipate in the Easter Egg Hunt, no pre-registration is required.

Haying In The 30’s

Haying in the 30’s, like countless other fundraising organizations, was challenged over the past year without being able to host our annual event. We are very grateful to have continued to receive donations from businesses, groups and individuals throughout the year. That generosity, combined with the success of our online auction, enabled us to assist 334 people who were undergoing treatment for cancer in 2020.

While we await announcements for the easing of restrictions, the Board has started discussions in anticipation of being able to go ahead with the 2021 event. We have a long list of projects that include finishing construction on the new donation booth and raft, setting up the windmill for operation, and completing the expansion of the kitchen/cooking area. There is also regular maintenance of the existing buildings and weekly grass cutting that needs to be done. Regardless of the decision about the 2021 event, there will be work to do, and weather permitting, we will begin work bees at the site on Wednesday, May 26th at 7pm. All work will be conducted in accordance with any health guidelines for outdoor gatherings that may be in place.

people who have had their lives forever affected by cancer. I want to assure you that Haying in the 30’s will be back for another great event, and we are hopeful that will be this year. The One Room School Houses Of The Area

Throughout the area of Vermilion, one-room schoolhouses dotted the landscape. These buildings were not only about teaching children. They were places for worship, meetings and celebrations. For many places, the one room school house was the most important building in the area.

I am going to look at a few of those buildings today.

Allandale: The name was chosen because trustees had difficulty choosing a name for the building. The school was officially opened on June 1, 1908 by Victoria Clarke, the first teacher for the school, with classes being held at the Holy Trinity Church. The new school was built soon

Fairwood: named for Robert Fairbairn and William Woods, the first teacher was M. Kennedy in 1910. The school would operate until Oct. 23, 1918 when it was closed because of the Spanish flu. It would re-open again on Dec. 2, 1918. The school would continue to operate until 1954 when enrolment fell but the building remained an active community centre.

Green Vale: Originally named Onion Lake, the school was built in 1922, the first teacher was a Mr. Moreham. The school would continue to operate until 1950.

Hughes: Built in 1923 and named for General Sam Hughes, the Minister of the Militia during the First World War. The first teacher would be Jean Horricks. It was closed in 1949.

Koknee: Named by Thomas Elliott, a trustee, who suggested it as an Indigenous name, the building was built in 1909 and was opened in the spring of 1910 with Susan Rogers as the first teacher, overseeing 12 students. The school would burn in a blizzard in 1935, and was replaced with a new building. The school closed in 1953.

Millerdale: Named for H.R. Miller and C.M. Miller, two early settlers, the school opened in 1909. Odd for a one room school house, no dancers were allowed in the school as put down in a motion by the school board. The school would close in 1944 and it became a feed mill in Vermilion soon after.

Park Valley: Built and opened in 1916, with John Cassidy serving as the first teacher, the school would operate until 1947 when it became a community centre.

Thorncliffe: Named for the Ontario home of the trustees of the school, the building was opened in 1910 and would operate as a school for the next four decades.

A new school was built in 1950, when the Paradise Valley High School was moved to the school site. That school stayed open until 1960.

Kirk Hughes, Director of Protective Services for the County of Vermilion reported that the first weekend of spring was a busy one for the County of Vermilion Firefighters.

On March 19 at approximately 3:54 p.m. multiple alarm assignments were sent to Paradise Valley, Blackfoot, Kitscoty as well as mutual aid from Legacy Rural for a large commercial structure fire just north of Rivercourse. A storage facility with numerous farm implements, tractors, motor vehicles and tools was found on fire by the responding crews.

“Crews worked to contain the spread and extinguish the fire, which lasted several hours. Fire crews from Marwayne,

Islay and Vermilion covered the district in case of additional calls. The fire is not suspicious,” commented Hughes.

Additionally, on March 21 at approximately 2:32 a.m. another structure fire in the Blackfoot area was attended by a County Engine, Tender Rescue, Command and County Truck, alongside RCMP, AHS and Utilities. The fire was contained to the garage and not deemed suspicious. “ Working smoke alarms certainly saved property and likely lives this weekend”, said County Fire Chief Kirk Hughes.

“Crews responded quickly which made an impact on the spread of both fires”.

The County of Vermilion River reminds residents to check their smoke alarms and fire smart their properties from wildfires.

With spring here the risk of wildfires and grass fires increase due to the dryer conditions and Hughes comments that the County of Vermilion River is at an increased risk because our villages and homes border on large agricultural and forested lands.

“This is what makes these regions so attractive to most, our accessibility to the outdoors,” said Hughes. He went on to say that historically, we’ve seen large grassfires over the last few years, but certainly nothing that would jeopardize the communities.

to our north, are not the kind of fires we’d expect to see in the County. However, with low precipitation levels received over the winter, we must all be prepared to react to any grassland fire,” explained Huges.

According to Hughes, Protective Services has completed a Fire Risk Assessment for the County of Vermilion River and with the lower amounts of precipitation coupled with a hotter than average summer expected it will put the County at an elevated risk for wildfires.

“The good news is that the CVR Fire Service is working diligently to prepare for any eventualities and contingencies we might encounter. Fire apparatus, equipment, tools and gear have already been ordered and our departments have already prepped for the season,” said Hughes.

There are currently no fire bans in the County, but there are some close to the County.

Wildfires can be caused by a variety of reasons such as natural, but unfortunately according to Hughes many types of fires are usually human caused either by accident or by negligence.

“Often, it’s sometimes something as innocent as a campfire or a hot piece of metal from a running engine to a discarded cigarette or an intentional start. It is important to recognize these sources,” Hughes

explained.

Hughes says that being fire smart is one of the best ways to prevent fires or reduce the risk. These include maintaining your yard, removing debris and flammable materials from near your home, pruning branches to eliminate dead trees and to keep gutters free of leaves. Other ways are to store flammable liquids such as propane and gasoline away from your house and to keep firewood piles at least 10 to 30 meters away from the siding.

“If you are burning, get a burn permit.

Small fires can grow at rapid rates, and we’d never want anyone to be needlessly put in harm’s way,” said Hughes. He went on to say that the public can play a critical role by being Fire Smart and calling 9-1-1 when they see unusual smoke or flames and taking the time to extinguish all fires.

Hughes also mentioned that the County Fire departments are always needing volunteer firefighters and encourages residents to watch albertafirebans.ca or download the APP to their phones to stay up-todate. ”Our website is a good resource, however the websites above and the APP are very useful. Residents can sign up on our Voyent Alert System and receive notifications and check our Facebook page for more information,” said Hughes.

Life And Hockey Career Of The Late Brent Macnab

Local resident Brent Macnab Jr. who was born on January 15, 1931, left home at the age of 14 to play junior hockey with the Wetaskiwin Canadians in the major junior league in 1945. Shortly, thereafter, the Calgary Buffalos wanted Brent to come and play with their team, however, the Wetaskiwin Canadians would not release him from his contract.

“My granddad Brent Macnab Sr. paid the astronomical fee of $1100, which in those days, after the war was a lot of money to have my dad released from the contract with the Wetaskiwin Canadians,” commented Brent’s son Blair Macnab.

After playing for roughly four years with the Calgary Buffalos Brent began his professional hockey career in 1950.

He played with the Calgary Stampede in the Western Canada Senior Hockey League (WCSHL) from 1950 to 1951. The WCHSL was a senior amateur hockey league that played until 1951. Following the 1950-51 season, the Regina Capitals folded. This gave the remaining teams the impetus to petition to join the professional Western Hockey league, effectively

disbanding the WCSHL. In 1951 the American Hockey League (AHL) picked up Macnab and he played with the St. Louis Flyers from 1951 to the end of the 1953 hockey season as a left shooting defensemen. The St. Louis Flyers were a Minor Professional hockey team based in St. Louis, MO playing in the American Hockey League from 1944 to 1953.

In the 1953-1954 hockey season Brent played in the Quebec Hockey League (QHL) and played for the Springfield Indians. According to his son Blair, Macnab also played with the Springfield Indians in the AHL in 1953-54 and 1954-55 seasons. The Springfield Indians were a minor professional hockey team based in Springfield, MA. Blair also mentioned his Father also played with the Chicoutimi Sagueneens a minor professional hockey team based in Chicoutimi, PQ in the 1954-55 season.

Moving on, Brent was with the Quebec Aces in the 1955-56 and the 1956-57 season under the QHL. In the 1957 season, Brent continued his professional hockey career with the Vancouver Canucks in the Western Hockey League

where he stayed until he retired from professional hockey in 1961.

While playing professional hockey Brent Jr. married his first wife Hazel in 1952. They had one daughter Mickey (born 1953) and four sons, Brent (who passed away in 1957), Mike (born 1956), Randy (born 1960), and Blair the youngest born in 1964.

Once retiring from professional hockey Brent moved back to the Buffalo Coulee area and began farming with his dad Brent Macnab Sr. According to Blair his Father Brent Jr. purchased the family ranch known as the Buffalo Creek Ranch in May of 1965 and ran 150 head of cattle and had horses.

“My dad purchased the ranch from Frank Eyben for the whopping sum of $50 per acre, and at the time he also purchased a brand new John Deere combine at the staggering sum of $6200,” commented Blair.

Blair comments that his dad Brent has always been his Dad, best friend, and mentor and that he could never have had

a father better than the one had.

“My parents raised us all on the ranch, supported us in everything we did but never forced us to do anything, unless it was chores,” chuckle Blair. He always told us if we wanted something bad enough no one could stop you from getting it. My dad only had a grade 8 education and he was the best businessman I know.”

With great affection for his father Blair comments that his Dad worked hard every day of his life right up until his passing.

“He loved the farm, cattle and horses.

He wasn’t a big fan of the machinery but it is how he made his living,” explained Blair. He also went on to say that his dad was a neighbour and a friend to all that crossed his path.

“I don’t think I ever introduced him to anybody who didn’t ask about him the next time they saw me. My Dad always had a smile and always had time to talk.

He saw the good side of everyone and everything,” Blair relayed fondly.

Brent Macnab passed away on July 1, 2020 at the age of 89.

The Playhouse Daycare located in the Lakeland Mall opened its doors in 2017.

The daycare like many other businesses was affected by COVID by having to close its doors when instructed to do so by the Alberta Government. Luckily they were able to reopen in October, but have strict guidelines which they must follow.

“Staff must wear masks in the Center, sanitize and wash hands regularly. We have to make sure children are appropriately washing hands and make sure

all proper documentation is posted on doors. We also have to ensure everything is sanitized. We can only have one parent at a time during pick up and drop off and we have to check temperatures and assess symptoms before arrival,” explained owner Jessica Coates-Lingley.

Since reopening, the daycare centre has become a fully licensed facility and can now receive more children for care.

“Before becoming licensed we were not allowed to have more than six children a day and couldn’t offer a subsidy,” explained Coates-Lingley.

At the Vermilion Fair we are incredibly lucky to have the level of competition that we do each summer. Both the light horse and heavy horse competitions see a high level of sportsmanship and competition with competitors coming great distances to compete in this show.

With the way the rodeo circuit plays out we regularly get world class competitors from the Calgary Stampede coming to our fair to compete in our heavy horse competition making it a cannot miss event in the summer.

Heavy horses are the gentle giants of the horse kingdom. Also called draft horses and workhorses, these are horses who love to work. Not only are these gentle giants celebrated for their calm demeanor, but they were also integral to

farm living in the early days of farming in this country. Heavy horses continue to be helpful partners on many farms and are most seen doing farm work, logging, and giving sleigh rides. There are dozens of heavy horse breeds, including Belgian, Clydesdale, Percheron, and Shires. All these breeds are celebrated for their strength and patience making them the perfect helping hand (or hoof) on many farms and ranches. These hard-working animals are a great addition to our fair, so the next time you hear of heavy horses making an appearance in your community, be sure to take the opportunity to meet them up close! And at the same time make sure to meet the committee behind the event and thank them for all the hard work they put into making the event a success each year.

The equine show is another highly

anticipated event each year. Our Equine Show runs all three days of the Fair and we are proud to offer many different classes in English and Western as well as Dressage and Driving. There is a little something for every type of rider at the Vermilion Fair, from beginner to advanced. There are pleasure classes, which are judged on the performance of the horse and how pleasurable the horse is to ride. Equitation classes, where the rider must give commands effectively to their horse. Then there are the timed classes, Western riding has games such as pole bending and barrel racing.

Horse shows are about competition, and sportsmanship. Competing in shows requires a lot of practice and a synchronicity between horse and rider. Spectators will enjoy the beauty of equestrian sports. RCMP Recover $250,000 In Stolen Property And Dismantle Vehicle Chop Shop In Bonnyville

Bonnyville, Alta., - On February 24, 2021, members from the Bonnyville RCMP Detachment and the Lakeland Crime Reduction Unit (LCRU) entered into a stolen property investigation after locating a stolen Ford F350 service truck from Innisfree, AB at a rural property in La Corey, AB. (La Corey is a small hamlet located approximately 20 kilometers north of the Town of Bonnyville).

Upon entering onto the property, Police located

two suspects who were found to be in possession of the stolen vehicle. Upon attempting to arrest one of the suspects, a physical altercation ensued which led to Police deploying their conducted energy weapon (Taser). Both males were subsequently arrested without further incident and the property was held for a Search Warrant. On February 25, 2021, Police executed a Search Warrant at the La Corey property with the assistance from the RCMP’s K Division North Auto Theft Unit (ATU). Police located and recovered a total of 9 stolen vehicles as well as an assortment of additional stolen property. Police then entered into a Trafficking of Property Obtained by Crime investigation after finding that several of the stolen vehicles had received fraudulent vehicle identification numbers.

Police eventually located and recovered 3 additional stolen vehicles as a result of the continuing investigation. An estimated $246,188.00 in stolen property has been recovered to date as a result of this investigation.

Kyle Donovan FLETCHER (33) of Vegreville, AB was charged with the following offences: • Obstruction;

Assault on Police; Attempt to disarm a Police Officer; Fail to comply with Release Order; Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000; • Mischief over $5000.

Dean Peter GAMACHE (31) of La Corey, AB was charged with the following offences: • Trafficking in property obtained by crime over $5000; • Tampering with a vehicle identification number; • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000 x 12; • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000 x 4; • Mischief over $5000; Both FLETCHER and GAMACHE were held for a bail hearing where they were Remanded into Police custody.

FLETCHER and GAMACHE are scheduled to appear in Bonnyville Provincial Court via CCTV on April 6th 2021.

This matter is still under investigation. Police would like to remind the public to be cautious when purchasing vehicles or vehicle parts through private online sales.

The three new programs will feature hands-on learning opportunities and will be offered at the Vermilion campus.

“We’re excited to expand our program offering for September. Each program provides practical training in areas where these industries need qualified professionals ready to put their education into action. We know our students learn best through action, which is why each of our new programs offers experiential learning opportunities that will equip them for success,” says Michael Crowe, Lakeland’s vice president of academic and research.

Agricultural sustainability diploma program Designed for students who’re passionate about agriculture as well as sustainability and stewardship, the two-year agricultural sustainability program is a collaborative offering by two of Lakeland’s academic schools.

This program features courses in common agricultural production practices and foundational plant, soil and livestock sciences, as well as ecology and habitat management technologies. Graduates will be prepared to meet the challenge of global food production while balancing economic, social and environmental sustainability pillars.

This diploma program features a practicum with an industry partner between the first and second year of study. Graduates will have a range of career opportunities including working with various levels of government, regulatory agencies, producer organizations, environmental and agricultural consultants, and more.

“The sustainability of food production value chains is an increasing priority, which means there’s a growing need in the job market. Our agricultural sustainability program will equip students with agricultural backgrounds to excel in sustainable practices, and it will expose students interested in environmental issues to commercial agriculture production,” says Geoff Brown, dean of the School of

Applied environmental sciences certificate Students in the one-year applied environmental sciences certificate can combine their love of the outdoors with employable skills. Within the first month of the program, students will put theory into action in outdoor labs.

Graduates will be ready for entry-level environmental jobs across Canada with skills in aquatic habitat assessments, plant identification, water monitoring and sampling, wetlands and soil classification, and environmental assessment. The certificate allows seamless entry into any of the four environmental sciences diploma program majors.

Family units received 65 point-based tasks via email at noon on the day of the event and completed the tasks in their homes and throughout the community. “ We re c e i ve d ver y p o s i t i ve re s p o n s e s from our par tic ipants who really enjoyed having a day to enjoy being outside, having

family friendly activities, and introduce an element of excitement during these times of restrictions,” commented coordinator, Josh Anderson.

Donna M o on, a Vermilion citizen, is donating the money she gets from bottle returns to VES. She is taking her cans and bottles to the Bottle Depot and asking them to put the money towards VES. Every two weeks, the Bottle Depot will give the money to VES at the

same time that they deliver the homeroom envelopes from the recycling that happens at the school. We thank Donna for her thoughtfulness.

Spring photos (individual and class group) and Kindergarten Grad photos will be on April 19 and 20. Monday will be KA & Gr 1-3 and Tuesday will be KB & Gr 4-6. Group photos will be different this year as we will be doing the class

group photos outside, with students being social distanced to ensure we are following protocols.

The spring concert will proceed this year, only slightly differently. Each class will be performing one song that will be recorded and posted on Facebook. The songs will then be randomly posted (only one per day) near the end of April and the beginning of May. We hope you can tune

in to each and every selection.

Lakeland College Offers New Programs Fall 2021

Lakeland College has developed new courses approved by Alberta Advanced education to be available in the fall 2021 semester.

The first program to be delivered in fall 2021 is the Agricultural Sustainability Diploma, which according to LakelandCollege.ca is a program that “bridges agricultural and environmental science”.

“We used to have a program like this around fifteen years ago,” said Dean of Agricultural and Environmental Science, Geoff Brown, “It was a little ahead of it’s time.”

The original program, called Agriculture Environmental Technology, was offered before there was a general interest in agricultural sustainability. Now that progressions in a sustainable direction have been made and interest has grown with consideration to sustainability organizations such as the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef, the Agricultural Sustainability Diploma will be an innovative and relevant program.

Another new program being offered

by Lakeland College in the fall is the Post-Bachelor Commercial Agriculture Production Certificate.

According to LakelandCollege.ca, this program is for “ag degree holders who want to build their practical skills,” and will include various hands-on competencies, which Brown suggests will be particularly beneficial to the College’s international students.

A shift in environmental sciences occurred last fall semester in which the program was changed to Applied Environmental Sciences to offer more specified courses that would be relevant to the careers students will pursue after their education. In addition to this change, the College will be offering a certificate program in Applied Environmental Sciences for students who are unsure about whether they want to commit two years for the diploma. According to Brown, this program will allow students to get a feel for the diploma program, and once they complete the certificate program, they can carry on to another year with one already under their belt.

Along with these new programs, Lakeland College received a $4 million bison donation earlier this year which the College will incorporate into their Animal Science Technology livestock major this fall.

According to Brown, the College’s s t u d e n t m a n ag e d far m wa s q u i te successful this year. Challenges arose with COVID-19 as restrictions made certain tasks such as har vesting in the fall difficult. Students are often in the combine together. With the help of Lakeland College’s Covid Committee, they were able to work out a system in which students were not allowed to be in the combine together for longer than 15 minutes. Brown confirms that masks were worn as well and sanitization was done often.

“Our crops team has done very well,”

Brown commented, “We had an excellent harvest season this year.”

This year was the first year Animal Science Technology livestock majors had equine prospect geldings, which occurred in an online sale on March 27.

The sale used to be “Beef Day,” a sale exclusive to bulls and heifers, but with the new equine sales, it was renamed the Roundup Sale.

Students in programs involving the participation of the student-managed farm have been doing presentations livestreamed to the public on YouTube as their year comes to a close.

Have you ever had multiple losses in your life that are overwhelming you and you feel like the pain of grief causes you to feel helpless with so many surprising emotions. You are feeling the results of Cumulative Grief. What is Cumulative Grief?

Cumulative grief becomes part of our grief journey when we experience multiple losses and before we have had any time to process that loss we overwhelmed by, yet another loss.

It would be great to think each loss we en d ure i s pro c es se d ( wor ke d through the pain) and we can integrate it into our lives before we are faced with another grief loss. Often this is not the case and we are faced with multiple losses that have piled more pain upon pain and fear upon fear. Called “Cumulative Grief, “Grief Overload.”

Is there a way we can truly know that we have grieved the first loss, processed and integrated it into our lives ? Grief is so individual that there

When It Rains, It Pours

is no time line or check list for everyone, but we know time is a factor. If we don’t have the time to process or deal with and give the attention needed, it becomes emotionally more that we can handle.

When our brain is over whelmed with anything our defence mechanism becomes “Avoidance.”

We experience this in a death loss but it can grow with multiple losses.

Denial and shock can be negative if never resolved and avoidance cannot continue indefinitely.

Be aware of the risk of cumulated loss/grief overload. Being aware of the multiple losses in a short period poses unique challenges, this can put you at risk for a grief process that is especially complicated.

Be sensitive to other friends or family member who have suffered multiple losses and are at risk for cumulative grief. We can become absorbed in our own way of grieving when we experience a loss and find dealing with others who grieve differently may be difficult as they may have multiple losses.

Be aware of increased possibility

of avoidance or denial in instances of cumulative grief. To make it through one day at a time you may find you are more prone to avoidance than before and may increase the risk of more use of Alcohol and other drugs. Be aware that you must ultimately grief all of those recent losses.

Keep in mind that time is not the only factor in cumulative grief. Though assuming that grief overload occurs only with immediate succession of losses this is not the case. A loss that occurred years before that was not successfully attended to may be brought forward by a new loss and can be overwhelming.

Substance abuse can increase the risk for cumulative grief. When abusing drugs and alcohol people are prone to avoid grieving and going through the pain of grief. This avoidance can leave grief unattended (cumulated) and possibly be re -addressed at another loss years later when no longer using substances.

Age can increase the risk for cumulative grief. Those aging 70,80 or 90ies experience multiple losses of friends,

family, more often than in earlier life.

They also experience losses of home, independence and identit y. These losses and grief felt are often minimized by society but are cumulated losses to be dealt with. Often the aging population is not as apt to seek out professional help to get through this time of grief they are living with, “Grief Overload.”

Grief is as unique as each person we lose, so we cannot rush grieving multiple losses. Each loss must be grieved individually and cannot be lumped together to be dealt with at once. Attention must be spent on each loss in order to integrate them into our lives.

Cumulative grief can put more stress on our faith. When suffering multiple losses our faith can leave us questioning our Higher Power. “Why bad things happen to good people”, but is not always the case. Know it is normal if your faith shakes as a result of cumulative grief overload.

this question can change the variety of corn that producers should select. For example, if the silage will be used as a winter feed source for the cow herd, a higher energy corn variety may be better suited than a high fibre variety that would be used in a feeder ration where corn silage is used as a fibre source.

Much of Canada is suited to coolseason plants, but plant breeding companies have developed corn hybrids that require fewer corn heat units (CHU) during the growing season. The minimum CHU rating for corn hybrids has fallen from 2300 to 2000 over the past 40 years.

Once the end use is established, a corn hybrid may then be selected based on the available CHU for a specific location. CHUs indicate the number of accumulated thermal units over the growing season. CHU zones in Canada are mapped according to the growing season and long-term weather data. Silage corn hybrids can have grain maturity ratings 100 to 200 CHU less than corn grain varieties because corn silage is harvested at a lower dry matter content before the grain is fully mature.

The following are tips and tricks for selecting corn hybrids for regions across Canada from east to west.

scientist who studies ruminant nutrition and the environment at the Agriculture Agri-Food Canada research station in Lethbridge, Alber ta. She has studied CHUs extensively and has noticed a shift over time.

A CHU map is an average of the heat units that can be expected for a region and is not a guarantee for each year. During a recent hybrid trial, Dr. Beauchemin’s research suggested that the CHUs were higher than what was previously indicated for the Canadian prairies. Unlike the previous CHU map developed in 1976, this new map reveals that the growing season may be longer on average than previously thought. This doesn’t suggest that the growing season is warmer, but there are more warm days than in years past.

Selecting a hybrid that will reach the desired maturity during the growing season in your area is key. Dr. B e au c h e m i n s ays p l a n t s t h at a r e immature at the first heavy frost can result in a crop with ver y high dr y mat ter content. This can make the corn difficult to turn into silage since the optimum moisture content is around 60 to 68%.

Determining the CHU rating for a corn hybrid is not an easy or quick process. Dr. Beauchemin suggests that producers ask their seed company for trial data closest to their location for the varieties they are interested in to help make a decision.

expected ranges in CHU. It is important to understand that these are long term averages, and year to year differences in actual CHUs obtained can vary tremendously. Most years vary from the average by 200 CHU. For example, Saskatoon (YXE) can anticipate 2300 to 2500 CHU for the growing season on average, but to ensure maximum yield as well as quality, a producer could select hybrids with a rating of 2100 to 2300 CHU. In Saskatoon, there is an 80% probability of obtaining 2100 CHU in a given year, but only a 55% probability of obtaining 2300 CHU. In the Edmonton (YEG) region with a long-term average of 2000 to 2200 CHU, a producer could consider hybrids with 2000 CHU. Thank you to BCRC for permission to reprint this article. Alberta’s Elm Pruning Ban Starts April 1

To help keep Alberta Dutch elm disease (DED) free, the Society to Prevent Dutch Elm Disease (STOPDED) encourages ever yone to pay attention to the provincial elm pruning ban between April 1 and September 30, 2021.

Cover Crop Research Reaching Out To Farmers

A PhD Student from the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of Manitoba, Callum Morrison, is running the first ever Cover Crop Survey to take place across three Prairie Provinces - Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.

“I wanted something that was going to be in the prairies with the potential to really benefit the prairies, and here was an internet research that was needing to be expanded. There was an appetite to know more about cover crops on the prairies, and it was also a great project for me to be able to connect with farmers all over the prairies in all different types of agriculture whether they have livestock, or inorganic or organic, whether they are all different types of crop species,” commented Morrison.

A cover crop is grown to provide cover for the soil, typically growing at a time when a cash crop would not be planted. A cash crop is any crop that is grown to provide income for the farmer. There are two types of cover crops that are popular in the prairies; the first kind is a shoulder season cover crop, which is grown in between two cash crops that will be providing coverage to soil in the fall, and then there is a second type of cover crop which is called the full season cover crop that is to provide cover to the soil over the entirety of the growing season. These two types of cover crops are very popular for things that try to reduce salinity or build nitrogen for organic farmers, and they can be grazed by cattle.

“The goal of the survey is to create more information for farmers. There has

not really been very much information on how farmers on the prairies, can integrate cover crops into their system, and also how successful cover cropping has been. So, what I am really hoping to do is to show farmers this is how farmers near you have been using cover crops, this is how they have been able to do it, and then this is what benefits other farmers have actually seen. I will be able to tell farmers in what timeframe they have seen these benefits to be able to show them what challenges they face. This will allow not only the farmers to see what they can do to try and avoid these challenges, but also will allow government policy makers, researchers, and extension staff, to look at ways that they could assist farmers growing cover crops in the future if they so choose,” said Morrison.

The information for the research is still pouring in, according to Morrison. They have heard from over 400 farmers from across the provinces and have spoken to over 650 from Ontario. Morrison stated that one of the major things the organization has found is just how diverse cover crop farmers and their crops really are.

“People are using cover crops across all these different regions with all of the different number of growing degree days, all of different team units, and all of the different moisture levels. So, farmers are being able to adapt cover crops with all these conditions and it is just amazing how innovative the farmers are,” said Morrison.

Morrison notes it is important to hear from farmers who grow cover crops, as well as farmers who do not, and are both encouraged to participate in the survey.
