The Good Life Institute began the annual Race of Vermilion event in 2015 which grew into 50 teams registering and two different race circuits. Last year the event was nearly cancelled because of the COVID-19 restrictions, but the organization was able to do the event virtually.

With the COVID-19 restrictions still in place this year, Race of Vermilion will be done virtually this year as well. People who are interested in registering are only allowed to sign up family units. The cost has been lowered to $50 per team.

What is the Climate Action Incentive? Here’s how it affects your taxes.

Alberta, Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan have a federal carbon tax- it’s called a fuel charge. Rather than being 21033AA6 sent to you as a separate bill the fuel charge is added directly to the cost of your gas when you fill up at the pumps and to your home heating bills. The fuel charge gives us the incentive to make cleaner choices and encourages businesses to find clean solutions- which benefit us all as it protects the environment and helps grow the econ-

omy. The goal of the CAI is to offset the cost of the fuel charge and put some money back in your pocket.

If you are a resident of either of the provinces listed above you can apply for the CAI rebate on your 2020 tax return. You’re only allowed one credit per household, so you’ll have to decide which member of your family will apply for the credit (you’ll receive the same rebate no matter who applies). The amount you’re entitled to will be added directly to your tax refund.

How much can I expect to get back when I file?

Your CAI rebate amount will depend on the province you live in, your marital status, and the number of children in your family. Unlike other tax credits, it won’t be based on income-every household has the same rebate available.

The average family of four will receive an incentive of $981 in Alberta. People who live in rural areas will get 10 per cent more than those in cities to account for the fact that they likely use more energy and they don’t have as many public transportation options to reduce their fuel consumption.

Winter Fish Kill Spotted In Vermilion River

A winter fish kill was spotted recently in the Vermilion River, which was asserted by park officials and fishermen to be a natural and common process.

According to local Fish and Wildlife Officer Mitch Visser, winter fish kills caused by oxygen depletion in the water are common in shallow bodies of water and can also be caused by heavy ice or snow cover. While Vermilion’s recent fish kill was caused by an oxygen depletion, fish kills can be caused

by a wide range of natural and unnatural processes, such as age, stress, pollution, or disease.

“Most of the fish in this fish kill were suckers,” Visser said, “so they aren’t a highdemand fish like pike or pickerel.”

Fish kills can happen at any time of year and can also be caused due to high temperatures, dry seasons, and more. Fish populations - depending on cause and severity of the fish kill - usually regenerate.

Aaron Pritchett & Ray Mussell Bring Live Music To Elk Point Charity

2nd Chance Trail Ride Society is hosting a fundraiser in Elk Point on May 8, 2021 along with their annual trail ride.

Due to COVID-19 the trail ride will look a bit different this year with a staggered start and social distancing.

2nd Chance Trail Ride Society is an organization that raises funds and awareness about organ and tissue donation.

They host multiple types of fundraisers throughout the year such as, a golf tournament and trail rides.

This year along with the annual trail ride, the 2nd Chance Trail Ride Society is hosting a drive-in live music concert called Tunes and Tailgates, featuring a guest Canadian country singer, Aaron Pritchett. The event will include performances by Ray Mussell of Paradise

Motel, Cross Parallel, as well a musical duo from British Columbia with Jordan Pritchett, and Alberta born-and-bred Danielle Marie King. The event will also include a performance from another Albertan and rising country singer, Chantelle Mussell.

“We are excited about the event and to be a part of the event, and we are looking forward to bringing this live drive-in experience to the people in the surrounding communities to get out and enjoy some live music in a safe manner,” commented founder of Morcomm PR & Events, Sheila Moore.

All proceeds from the drive-in concert will go towards suppor ting the 2nd Chance Trail Ride Society raising awareness about organ and tissue donation, and to continue to support transplant patients through their challenging times.

Guests can bring as many people as there are seat belts in their vehicle, and watch from either inside their car or sit outside of their car to enjoy the live music.

“If the weather is good you will be able to get out of your car, of course wearing your mask, staying in your area beside your car. We are going to set up the parking to make that work. The show is live but it will also play through your radio through your FM transmitter. No food or drink, we won’t be providing any of that in order to make the event COVID safe. So, we want to make sure people are staying safe and staying distanced.

Who passed away March 15,2020 and leaves to cherish his memory and miss him terribly: His wife of 49 years May Rybchinsky, His son Rick Rybchinsky, His daughter-in-law Patricia Rybchinsky and their children Darrian Rybchinsky and Abby Rybchinsky.

His son Stacey Rybchinsky, His son J.R Rybchinsky, His daughter-in-law Melissa Rybchinsky, and their children Colton McLean and Matthew Rybchinsky and Allyson Rybchinsky. His daughter Tara Rybchinsky. All of Elk Point, AB. Orest was born March 23,1949 in the Elk Point hospital to Dan and Rose Rybchinsky. He grew up on the family farm south of Elk Point and attended school in Derwent then Clandonald and finally high school in Vermilion. He played on the high school basketball team. He also loved to play ball and did so whenever there was a community team that he could join.

He often told stories of the mischievous things that he and his older brother did which usually resulted in some form of punishment from their father. But he always seemed to feel that the frustration he caused was worth the punishment.

Orest and May met in school. They dated from a very young age and married in January of 1971. Orest worked at several different jobs including the Co-op furniture and hardware in Vermilion for 10 years. He returned to farming in 1980 and by 1992 while continuing to farm he enjoyed a few years as a realtor. By 1995 he bought his first oil hauling truck and began a career in the oil patch that spanned 20 years. He enjoyed the time he spent in his truck and often remarked that it wasn't like a real job he so enjoyed the wildlife he saw in his travels and this was evident in the many beautiful photos of all the different animals he kept in his phone to share with anyone he could. He also looked forward to the visits on the pits and in the scale house with the many friends he made over the years.

Second to oil hauling was the excitement of a good field of straw to bale which he did even when it meant carrying his chemo infusion with him in the tractor to avoid any disruption in his treatment. Making sure his cows were comfortable was a top priority. He loved calving season even though it meant long days and sleepless nights. And when his illness prevented him from being in the corrals the last 3 seasons he had binoculars in the kitchen and those of us that were still out there were reminded regularly to check certain cows.

Orest loved his work but he loved his family most of all. He was so proud of each one of his children and their accomplishments. And when they were teenagers and they smashed a vehicle as they so often did he would tell them vehicles can be replaced as long as they were not hurt.

He loved his grandchildren, he spent hours teaching Darrian to run equipment. Darrian learned to pull a bale trailor.

Grandpa pulled loaded and Darrian pulled empty.

Colton joined the family when he was 6 years old and Papa soon found him a fork with a shorter handle and he was hired immediately.

Grandpa loved nothing more than taking Abby on a trip to UFA for supplies some needed ,some not so much. Then a quick stop somewhere for all the goodies they could share on the way home.

Matthew and Papa loved to sit out on the back deck and have a good cup of coffee and a visit. They built the best gates and patched fences just for fun.

And Allyson was instrumental in helping Papa with getting the kitty that showed up in the shop on Christmas morning moved to the house when she marched into the kitchen and informed Nana that Puddy is Papas cat and he lives in the house now.

Orest was loved and cherished by all his family and he will be missed more than words can say.

He faced life head on and never backed away from a challenge. He fought the disease that finally took him with the same determination. And when he realized this was a battle he couldn't win he handled it with grace and dignity.

And with that he left his family a legacy of strength and courage to carry on in his absence.

Orest loved the Lord Jesus. And although he was not one to speak openly about his faith those who knew him best know that it was his faith that carried him each and every day of a life well lived.

MNP Donates $90,000 To Lakeland College’s Leading, Learning, The Lakeland Campaign

MNP which is a leading national accounting, tax and business firm for agricultural services in Canada have donated $90,000 to Lakeland College’s Leading.

Campaign is the largest fundraising initiative in Lakeland’s history. Launched in 2016, the $11-million campaign is focused on three priorities: expanding student success, empowering the next leaders in agriculture, and results-oriented research.

The campaign concludes June 30.

The Agriculture Technology Centre at the Vermilion Campus will receive a portion of the donation to help fund equipment.

The facility will be home to the college’s new bachelor of agriculture technology program that starts in the fall. The postcredential program, which is the first of its kind in Canada is designed to bridge t h e g a p b et we e n emerging technologies and agricultural manag ement and production systems.

“We are excited to help educate students in this program, who will play a critical role in the digital transformation of our Canadian farms,” says Stuart Person, Senior Vice President, Agriculture at MNP. A c c o r d i n g to a release Applied research will also benefit from the donation with half of the funding going to support research projects that will help producers bet ter

understand and use agriculture technologies.

“MNP recognizes the contributions of Lakeland College to the education of people in the agriculture industry, especially those alumni who are the next generation of producers and advocates, and those that we work with now as they continue to take on bigger roles in their own operations and within the industry,” said Scott Dickson, Director, Livestock Services and VP Hutterite Services at MNP. He also went on to say, that Lakeland has always been acknowledged as a staple across the prairies and given MNP’s history in agriculture and our prairie roots, this is a natural fit.

It’s been a challenging year, with the government providing financial support to many Canadians during the pandemic. As you prepare to do your taxes this year, it’s important to take these new income sources into account.

If you received COVID-related emergency benefit payments, you may owe taxes on this money. While the thought of owing money may be scary, if you delay filing you can miss out on helpful benefits and credits.

For example, by filing ever y year and regularly updating your personal information, the Canada Revenue Agency can determine if you’re eligible for things

like the Canada child benefit, the GST/ HST credit, or related provincial and territorial payments.

If they don’t have this info, your benefit and credit payments could stop. So, even if you have no income, are tax exempt or owe some money, not doing your taxes means you could lose out on cash you may rely on for rent or to help support your family.

And if you still haven’t filed your 2019 tax return, you could already be missing out on benefit payments.

If you owe taxes and cannot pay the full amount now, the CRA will help you to find a way to pay. If you need help doing your taxes, you may be able to get them done for free by a volunteer at a virtual tax clinic.

It is delicious eaten un-iced or finished with a chocolate butter cream icing.

Chocolate Fudge Icing 1 cup sugar 1/4 cup milk 1/4 cup butter 1/4 cup cocoa powder 1 teaspoon vanilla Combine all ingredients except vanilla in a heavy bottomed pot and bring to a boil stirring, allow to boil gently on low for three minutes. Remove from heat, stir in the vanilla and allow to cool. Pour on the cake and spread before it turns into fudge in the pot.

Fire is an ever p r e s e n t d a n g e r, especially in small communities that were made mostly of wood during the early 20th century. In those towns, one small spark could burn down an entire area of a town, and even lead to deaths.

For Vermilion, the worst fire in its history was the fire of 1918 that wiped out a large

On April 11, 1918, a fire began in the business district of Vermilion and due to high winds, it quickly began to spread through the community. It is believed that the fire started at the Elks Hall, before spreading.

As was mentioned, high winds swept the flames at a quick pace and firefighters were unable to battle the blaze due to the intense heat. Without water and with the winds, the fire spread through the centre and east end of town. By the time the fire was under control, 28 stores in the business block of

the community were gone, with 38 firms losing nearly everything in the process. In total, it was estimated that the losses due to the fire were $350,000, which would be over $5 million today.

By the end of the day, only two buildings remained standing in the downtown core.

As was common at the time, the people in the community quickly got back together to rebuild the community. One of the biggest changes seen was that the buildings were rebuilt with brick instead of wood, thanks to the contributions of the Vermilion brick company, one of the first businesses that operated in the commu-

nity from 1906 to 1914. That old building was restarted and bricks once again began to be produced in the community.

Today, many of those buildings built with brick using locally-made bricks continue to stand to this very day.

Fifteen students presented their projects. New this year, some students chose to present their experiments in a google slide presentation. All students earned a ribbon for completing a project with eleven projects being recognized for receiving a score of excellence.

Once again, there were a variety of great questions and discoveries at this year’s Science Fair.

Research topics included dolphins, flowers, space and the solar system. Experiments had to test a scientific question. Topics and materials involved shuffling playing cards, oil and water, eggs, paper towels, melting ice, soap bubbles, computer passwords, growing cr ystals and coloring flowers.

Eko-Terre Searching For Hemp Producers

Eko -Te r r e, a t ex t i l e s c o m p a ny based out of Sherbrooke, Quebec, is establishing a hemp processing facility in northeast Alberta and the City of Lloydminster has been short-listed as one-of-two final locations for a future decortication facility.

“Currently in the final stages of site selection the opportunity would also bring potentials of employment for up to 40 individuals, enhanced regional economic diversit y, and a unique growing/manufacturing opportunities for their region,” said Wendy Wagner, Land Sales Coordinator for the City of Lloydminster.

contracts for 10,000 to 12,000 acres of hemp production for the coming 2021 growing season, ideally within a 150 km radius of the facility and for any grower that is interested in growing hemp.

“This is an annual acreage requirement growing with additional phases in future years. Commitment to this level would secure the facility for the Lloydminster community,” and she added, “currently, Eko-Terre is looking for an additional 3,000 acres of hemp production in the region.”

Taking Action To Prevent The Spread Of Invasive Zebra Mussels

Alber ta’s g overnment is ask ing anyone who purchased moss balls after Jan. 1 to destroy and dispose of them.

Live zebra mussels, which are an invasive species, have been discovered in moss (marimo) balls, a spherical, plant-like algae commonly sold at pet and garden stores throughout North America, including in Alberta.

Alber tans should destroy moss balls by freezing or boiling them, then placing the moss balls in a sealed plastic bag and disposing of them with their household trash. Moss balls, and any water they were in, should not be flushed down the toilet, put down a drain or placed in a compost.

During the open water season, Alber ta operates watercraft inspection stations to prevent the spread of invasive mussels. The province’s watercraft inspection teams are assisted by three dogs trained to detect invasive zebra and quagga mussels. In addition, we encourage all Albertans to clean, drain and dry their watercraft and gear upon entr y into the province.

Ewald Brokop December 30, 1936 – March 9, 2021 On the afternoon of Tuesday, March 9, 2021 Ewald Brokop passed away at Drayton Valley Hospital and Care Centre at the age of 84 years.

Though our hearts are broken and we are filled with sadness, we rejoice that he was welcomed with open arms by his precious Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. UFA Co-operative Announces $14.2 Million Patronage Dividend

During their virtual Annual General meeting on March 11 United Farmers of Alberta Co-operative Ltd approved a patronage dividend of $14.2 million to its membership.

The payment is for 2020 purchases from Ag Gas (1.3 per cent), Ag Diesel (6.6 per cent), Canola and Corn Seed (1.6 per cent) as well as for lubri cants such as 18.9L pails of Rotella T4 15W40 and Rotella T6 5W40 and Spirax S4 TXM (5 per cent).

“As a member-owned agricultural co-operative, it is our responsibility to suppor t the members who continue to get the job done, even during a pandemic. The business of agriculture cannot stop,” says Scott Bolton, UFA President and Chief Executive Officer.

Organic Collection Coming To Vermilion

T h e To w n o f V e r m i l i o n a n d contracted waste collection company Integrity Waste Solutions have added a n o t h e r s e r v i c e fo r s i n g l e - f a m i l y homes, organic waste curbside pick up. The new service is in addition to the current recycling collection and will star t on April 27. The pic k- up day will be every Tuesday during the summer months and on a bi-weekly schedule during the winter months. At this point in time the organic collection will not be offered to multi-family units or commercial business.

“Collection day for the entire Town will be on Tuesdays with garbage and recycle collection completed on either Wednesday or Thursday depending

on which side of Town reside. There is no change to the garbage or recycling collection schedule. The full schedule is available on the Town website community calendar,” explained Derek Young, Director of Transportation & Utilities for the Town of Vermilion.

The Town will be d elivering the required green rollout bins and kitchen bins the week of April 12-16.

“Roughly half the Town had a green cart that was used for garbage collection prior to 2017. Residents will use the green cart they have been storing in their yard for the upcoming organics collection. The remaining half of Town that never had a green cart for garbage will be provided one,” Young stated.

He added that if material is collected in a bag, that bag would

have to be compostable.

“There are compostable bags on the market but residents will have to look closely before purchasing to ensure the bag is compostable,” said Young.

According to Young due to the fact that there is no processing facilities near Vermilion, the organic material which is collected will be transported to Integrity Waste Solutions facility in Edmonton in which it will be brought to an Alberta Environment approved composting facility in the Edmonton area.

On March 9, V.E.S held its 22nd annual science f a i r. F i f t e e n s t u d e n t s p r e s e n t e d their projects. New this year, some students chose to present their experiments in a google slide presentation. All students earned a ribbon for completing a project, with eleven projects being recognized for receiving a score of excellence. Once again, there were a variety of great questions and discoveries at this year’s science fair. Research topics included dolphins, flowers, space and the solar system. Experiments had to test a scientific question. Topics and materials involved shuffling playing cards, oil and water, eggs, paper towels, melt-

Parent Teacher Inter views will be coming up on March 23 and 24. Typically, for spring parent teacher interviews, we have had one night of interviews that are booked by parent or

teacher request only. This year, in lieu of canceling our Celebration of Learning in Februar y, we will be adding another night of inter views, as we would like to connect with all families.

Interviews will be conducted over the phone and we will be using School Conference Manager for parents to book a time that is convenient for their family.

The Seed Is Falling – Aerial Seeding Alfalfa Was Worth A Shot For One Operation

Aerial seeding crops is not a new idea for many farmers, particularly those in floodprone regions. However, most producers that are experienced with seeding by plane typically plant canola or other annual cash crops, not forages. While there have been a few examples where producers or organizations have experimented with aerial seeding forages, results have been variable, due in part to weather, timing of activities, and seedbed contact.

Arron Nerbas, of Nerbas Brothers Angus, was trying to figure out a way to rejuvenate some of their farm’s old forage stands that were located in the floodplain of the Assiniboine River Valley. These one-time hay fields became subjected to extended periods of flooding for many years, with floodwaters lasting for six to eight weeks. “What came back was primarily quack grass and reed canary, not productive forage species,” Nerbas explains. “In past years we would spray it out then seed a companion oat crop under-seeded to forage,” Nerbas says.

“Because of the flooding, we didn’t want to take the risk of spending a lot of money.”

In an effort to come up with a solution that was cost effective and flexible, they turned an eye to the sky and decided to investigate aerial seeding. “We thought instead of completely re-establishing a forage stand, why don’t we try and fly out alfalfa and see if that would work.”

The Nerbas family contracted a tradi-

tional spray plane operator that placed seed into the tank area where chemical or fertilizer would typically go. “Instead of being distributed through a nozzle, there’s a slide gate at the bottom where a manifold fits under the plane. The seeds spread out, blowing out by force,” Nerbas describes.

They flew over the field, planting inoculated alfalfa at a rate of approximately 10 pounds per acre.

The first year they seeded 400 acres, and the following year they planted approximately 300 acres, both times flying during the third week of May. “We wanted to wait until spring and work around the applicator’s busy season,” Nerbas explained. “We had average moisture at time of seeding and both times we had good rain two to three weeks following seeding,” Nerbas says, and attributes the success of the project to those timely rains. While prices will vary by farm, suppliers, and area, Nerbas estimates he was able to improve his forage stand with an investment of around $25/ acre for seed and application costs.

Many farmers who aerial or broadcast seed try to improve seed-to-soil contact by harrowing, however Nerbas likes to let his cattle do that job for him. After seeding, they split the field into parcels ranging in size from 100 acres to 150 acres, and immediately grazed a herd of 250 pairs for about a week to allow the cattle to punch the seeds in with their hooves. They followed up with additional grazing that season about thirty days later but Nerbas adds management

should be tailored according to the year and the producer’s goals. “In hindsight we probably shouldn’t have grazed again for the rest of the year if we wanted the alfalfa to thrive sooner. It doesn’t really look like it hurt it, but it did delay it,” he adds.

While this may not be a mainstream practice, there are some key points to remember when aerial seeding forages: Species selection: consider the seed size and weight, which are important factors for aerial calibration and metering. In Nerbas’ case, legumes made the most sense for providing an economical boost in forage production. Also, alfalfa is a small, dense, uniform seed, that flows easily in the seed tank and is less likely to Patience: “To rejuvenate forages this way, you have to be prepared to be patient,” Nerbas says. In the first year, he admits that the alfalfa seedlings looked spindly and unlikely to amount to much compared to a traditional break-and-re-seed experience, but the idea, and the economics, paid off in the end.

Know your costs: sourcing quality seed that is economical, as well as finding a willing contractor able to seed during a reasonable time frame are key elements producers need to factor in.

Seed to soil contact: have a plan in place that includes any fencing or stock water infrastructure necessary so that grazing animals can be moved into the area for necessary hoof action when the time is right.

The Nerbas family is continuing to experiment with aerial seeding and have expanded beyond their flood-prone land and are now testing the idea on their top lands as well. They flew some extra alfalfa seed onto these drier, sandy areas and found some promising results. They are also potentially considering trying other legume species.

Nerbas is careful to point out that his experience with aerial seeding may not be the same for everyone. “The stars aligned for us for it to work that well,” Nerbas says.

Flexibility, out-of-the-box thinking, and persistence helped create a successful outcome too.

Alberta Cow Market And Cow Slaughter Update

Cow prices are gaining and cattle slaughter continues to outpace year ago levels.

‘Seasonally, cow prices typically strengthen in late winter, peaking in late spring, then decline before peaking a second time in late summer,’ says Jason Wood provincial livestock market analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘The average D2 cow price was just under $87 per cwt the last week of February, up over $11 per cwt since mid-February.’

Year-to-date, the western Canada cow market is averaging $77 per cwt, 11% below

2020 and the 3-year average.

The long-term seasonal price increase between January/February and May averages near 29%. In the last few years cattle markets have traded in tighter ranges, softening seasonal price movements.

‘For D2 cows, the seasonal price change in the last 10 years has averaged closer to 18% between the January/February low and the spring high. Based on historical price moves and assuming the market low has been put in, the D2 cow price for spring 2021 could be in the range of $88 per cwt to $96 per cwt,’ explains Wood.

Cattle Slaughter Western Canada cattle slaughter was 2.4 million head in 2020, down 2.6% from 2019.

Fed cattle slaughter was up 2% in 2020, while non-fed was down 24% compared to 2019. In the first half of 2020, total western Canada cattle slaughter was down 10% compared to 2019 following COVID-19 plant disruptions. In the second half of 2020, total western Canada cattle slaughter was 5% higher than the same period in 2019.

Year-to-date, western Canada cattle slaughter is just over 335,000 head, 9% above 2020 and 22% above the 5-year average. Nationally, cattle slaughter is just under 429,000 head in 2021, up 9% from 2020 and 18% higher than the 5-year average.

2021 Grains, Oilseeds And Pulses Sector Outlook

FCC Economics helps you make sense of the top economic trends and issues likely to affect your operation in 2021. The three major trends to monitor for grain, oilseed and pulse operations include: Limited supplies and tight projected stocks-to-use ratios China’s influence on markets COVID’s hangover: currency fluctuations in a year of economic re-stabilization 2020 was a year unlike any other for so many reasons. In Canada, the overall production of grains, oilseeds and pulses was a record high, with most crops (except canola) seeing year-over-year (yoy) production gains. We project that most Canadian grain, oilseed and pulse prices will continue to benefit from tight global supplies and strong world demand (Table 1).

The year-to-date crop prices (except

for durum) are better than the annual 20-21 forecast. It’s a strong reflection of the major surge in commodity prices that started early in the fall of 2020. For the most part, prices for the 21-22 marketing year crop are projected lower, but still expected to be higher than their respective 5-year averages.

Farm input prices on the rise With higher crop prices expected in 2021, each crop supply is forecast to increase in most cases. That will drive higher demand for fertilizer, causing a surge in prices for urea, ammonia phosphate and potash.

Other crop input prices (e.g., seeds and pesticides) will also likely increase ahead of planting in the spring, softening crop margins. The 2021 soybeancorn ratio, based on November 2021 soybean to December 2021 corn futures prices, suggests U.S. farmers will favour soybean over corn acres. That competi-

tion for acres will directly influence nitrogen demand and fertilizer prices.

Farmland values are expected to stay elevated throughout 2021 due to the low interest rate environment and strong 20-21 crop receipts. Check back with us in March for the 2020 FCC Farmland Values Report results and our expectations about trends in rental rates and land affordability.

Wheat Argentina’s 20-21 wheat crop, estimated to be the smallest in five years, will help keep the 20-21 global wheat production forecast to 773.4 million metric tons, a slight 1.2% yoy growth. Those lowered forecasts offset Russian wheat production, expected to be a record high. Global wheat ending stocks are expected to be 304.2 million metric tons, 1.4% higher yoy and the highest in 5 years (Figure 1).

Bullish corn and soybean markets

have helped push wheat prices higher early in 2021, as has news of wheat ex p o r t r e s tr i c t i o n s i n Ru s s i a a n d rumoured export taxes in Argentina.

Elevated stocks won’t necessarily hurt further price projections (Table 1). First, the U.S. wheat stocks-to-use ratio is falling. Second, Canada’s export pace of the 20-21 crop remains strong. It’s a reassuring trend given Canadian production rose 7.7% yoy (to 35.2 million MT) – the second-largest volume in the last 10 years).

Higher prices suggest positive profit margins in the current and next marketing year. Despite that, we believe that the large upside for canola production may result in no growth of Canadian wheat acres in 2021. Yields returning to trend would result in a smaller 2021 crop and support prices.

BULL BREEDERS Continued from page 17 Corn Global corn production for the 20-21 MY is estimated to increase 1.6% to 1.13 billion MT. Although La Nina has already landed in South America, Argentinian corn production is still expected to be near a record high, and in Brazil, the largest ever recorded.

The global corn stocks-to-use ratio is declining, and so is the U.S. ratio (Figure 2). China’s growing use of corn as they rebuild their hog herd drives much of the expected demand (see Trend #2 below).

The USDA is now projecting a whopping 216% yoy increase in China’s corn imports for the 20-21 MY, on top of a 70% increase in Chinese imports during the 2019-20 MY. And there are reasons to believe these projections are conservative!

Strengthening export demand for U.S. corn will continue, but utilization projections face multiple wildcards. Total red meat and poultry production is projected up slightly in 2021, which should maintain feed demand. As well, the ethanol industry may rebound after a bumpy 2020.

At the worst point last spring, ethanol production was at half of pre-pandemic industry capacity. It now appears to have stabilized at a pace that’s 10% under the pace of early 2020. Resuming steady ethanol production equivalent to the 2018-19 MY could easily push corn’s stocks-to-use ratio under 10%.

Rising corn prices ( Table 1) are expected to trigger an increase in seeded acres. If yields in 2021 follow the expected trend, we would likely record an increase in supply for the 21-22 MY, putting a lid on the possible

appreciation in the domestic corn price.

Overall, however, margins will be well supported.

Soybeans In 2021, the soybean story is one of higher overall yoy production and even stronger demand that will, in some cases, pressure or break records.

Brazil, the world’s largest soy producer, is expected to harvest a record or nearrecord crop despite La Nina’s threat, and all major producers are up from 19-20 MY production. Argentina is the big unknown. Dryness there may hinder further crop development, and current labour disputes make loading and deliveries uncertain.

Total demand for soybeans is also up for the 20-21 MY, with China well in the lead. Successfully rebuilding their hog herd, China’s need for feed has cata-

pulted from 2018 when demand fell due to African Swine Fever, and it has grown beyond pre-ASF levels. Strengthening demand has resulted in a U.S. 20-21 MY stocks-to-use ratio (Figure 3) that’s lower than the 2012-13 ratio, the year with the last major drought.

Regardless of supply or demand shocks, prices are more volatile when stocks-to-use ratios are low. However, while elevated prices may continue throughout the next marketing year, large volumes of soybeans will come to market. Prices could also drift lower if Chinese purchases slow.

Overall, projected strong returns for soybean production are expected to lead to more seeded acres overall in 2021, and to reversing three consecutive years of decline in Prairie acres.

BULL BREEDERS Continued from page 18 Canola Canada’s canola producers are set to have an excellent year, with prospects for demand growth primarily limited by available supplies. The Chinese-led demand growth has helped push prices for oilseed markets overall, with demand for protein meals and vegetable oils also very strong.

With a 5-year average stocks-to-use ratio of 14% and a 2019-20 average of 15%, Canada’s ratio is expected to fall to 6% in 2021, a record low. Strong domestic demand and export growth will drive the shifting balance. With that support, we project seeded acres to grow yoy and production to increase with expected trend yields.

Should China slow their pace of oilseed purchases or the South American soybean harvest go better than expected, prices will weaken. But if Europe sees another hot, dry summer that limits their rapeseed production, prices could further strengthen. The March contract settled in late January at $717.80 per tonne, marking the first close above the $700 per tonne level since March 2008.

Lentils and peas Canada’s supply of dry peas in the 20-21 MY is expected to be 6% higher, with 8.4% production growth. Even with increased Chinese imports of Canadian peas, carry out stocks will rise to 450,000 tonnes, according to AAFC. Prices of the current crop year will be higher than the 5-year average but will fall with the arrival of the 2021 crop, pressuring margins.

India’s tariffs will continue to limit exports, as will lower demand elsewhere, increasing the 21-22 MY carry out stocks.

Lentil stocks will be higher at the end

of the 20-21 MY because of its greater production, placing some pressure on prices for the 21-22 MY. Production growth in other exporting countries will further pressure them. However, trend yields suggest that production won’t grow yoy despite a small rise in seeded acres this spring. Even though prices for the new crop are projected lower yoy, they’ll still support positive margins.

Trends to watch in 2021 Limited supplies, tight stocks-to-use ratios: a recipe for volatility The quality and volumes of South American crops over the next six months will determine if the high prices at the start of 2021 remain elevated through the North American marketing year. Russia has also added uncertainty to the mix by imposing export quotas to combat high domestic prices on numerous 20-21 MY crops, including wheat.

Export restrictions like these amplify price movements in the short-term, especially given these countries’ respective market shares and when stocks-to-use ratios are low, as they are now. Volatility may spike throughout 2021.

In a song about global ag, “China, China” is the chorus It’s now clear that market fundamentals drive U.S.-China agriculture trade, and not necessarily the hostilities of trade conflicts.

In 2021, those fundamentals are tied to China’s hog herd rebuild. African Swine Fever has put a permanent stamp on China’s future hog and pork market structure, with enormous investments being made in pig production sites designed to be the largest in the world. With the shift to major commercial production has come an unrelenting need for feed imports and an

increasingly interdependent relationship between the U.S. and China. Measured by the bushel, the U.S.-China relationship has never been stronger.

Despite that, China’s commitment under the terms of the Phase 1 deal with the U.S. was to buy US$36.6 billion worth of ag commodities in 2020, a commitment they didn’t keep. While President Biden is waiting to address any changes to the deal his administration may deem necessary, the China–Australia trade wars continue to escalate. They may grow to include more tariffs applied to Australia’s ag commodities, offering further opportunities to step up North American exports to China.

COVID’s hangover: currency fluctuations in a year of economic re-stabilization It was a roller coaster ride for many currencies in 2020, and the loonie was no exception. The current strength in the Canadian dollar is mostly the result of weakness in the U.S. dollar, which has now lost around 12% from its peak in March 2020 when measured by a trade-

weighted index.

A weak U.S. dollar is usually positive for commodity prices as it raises the purchasing power of major importers. But a relatively stronger loonie/weaker USD also hurts Canadian exporters’ competitive advantage and tighten profit margins of farming operations.

U.S. monetary policy is expected to remain very accommodating, and we’ll see low interest rates for the foreseeable future. Those two factors may inhibit growth in the USD. On the other hand, stimulus could lead the U.S. economy to gain strength. It could then revert the weakening trend - and place a ceiling on the strength of the loonie.

Midge tolerance in all varieties originates from a single gene called Sm1, which increases the level of phenolic acids in the wheat kernel and discourages feeding by the pest. As a result, the midge starve and die.

All varieties are sold as a blend of midge tolerant and midge susceptible wheat, providing an “interspersed refuge system” that disrupts the midge’s ability to produce resistant offspring, preventing a build-up of a resistant midge population. As Sm1 is the one and only midge tolerant gene,

growers must do their part to protect the technology. All growers sign a stewardship agreement and commit to maintaining the refuge by limiting the use of farm-saved seed to one generation past certified.

Planning for 2021 Given the right conditions, such as consecutive wet springs, midge populations can build quickly.

“This year could be a building year for the midge population…with trouble coming next year,” says Wist. “ We’ll know better once the midge survey is complete.”

In the meantime, as growers plan for 2021, ensuring stewardship protocols are being followed or purchasing certified midge tolerant wheat are solid steps to prevent midge outbreaks and to protect future yield and quality.
