COVID Outbreak At Vermilion Continuing Care Center

After a year of dealing with COVID-19 in Alberta, the Vermilion Continuing Care Center (VCCC) remained outbreak free.

Unfortunately, on January 24 the center was listed by AHS as having a COVID-19 outbreak. ”Currently (as of Jan 30) Alberta Health has been notified of 20 cases linked to this outbreak. Of these, 19 are active and, sadly, there has been one death,” said Tom McMillan, Assistant Director, Communications Alberta Health.

In relation to the outbreak response measures in place Melissa Ballantyne Manager, Central Zone AHS Communications & Community Engagement said that

COVID-19 swabbing has been offered to all staff and residents.

“Public health teams are carrying out contact tracing. We continue to closely monitor the situation and site leadership will continue to make sure the necessary enhanced safety protocols are in place to protect residents and staff,” commented Ballantyne.

Also, as part of the response there are regular follow-up meetings as well as enhanced protocols- including continuous masking by staff, enhanced cleaning and daily screening and COVID-19 testing of staff and residents.

“Additionally, some temporary measures have been enacted to help limit the spread of infection. These measures include

isolating all residents to their rooms, temporarily closing the site to new admissions, postponing patient transfers and restricting visitors. No visitors are allowed at this time,” Ballantyne explained.

For AHS to declare the outbreak in a continuing care setting is over, Ballantyne states it must be 28 days after the last person onsite tests positive for COVID19. Outbreak information is updated every Tuesday and Friday at http://www.alberta. ca/covid-19-alberta-data.aspx#p25721s5.

Residents who consented to receive the vaccine were administered their first dose on January 15.

While these important and necessary precautions are in place in the Continuing Care Center families are encouraged to keep in touch with their loved ones.

No Diagnostic Imaging Services Available In Vermilion

tyne went on to say that AHS plans to reopen ultrasound services in Vermilion in spring of 2021 stating, “Our priority is to ensure the community has sustainable access to ultrasound locally so that patients don’t have to travel.”

In late 2020, Mayfair Diagnostics became aware that a local GP, who ran the medical practice in Vermilion was planning to retire and close his clinic at the end of 2020.

“We made detailed inquiries regarding the possibility of taking over the lease for that clinic and offering imagining services.

However, as a result of these inquiries,

it became clear that there is a shortage of ultrasound technologists in the area who would be available to work in this proposed clinic,” said Amber Nason, Content Marketing & Communications Specialist for Mayfair.

Nason went on to comment that the specialist resource is essential for them to be able to offer their services to the community.

“Until that resource is available, we cannot open medical imaging services in Vermilion. However, we remain optimistic that we may be able to do so in the future,” explained Nason via an email interview.

Town Of Vermilion Census 2021

The Census Program provides a statistical portrait of the country every five years that Canadians are encouraged to participate in. The information gathered from the Census of Population is used to make informed decisions about Canada’s communities, provinces and territories, and the country.

“Many of our government grants are based on our population and therefore accurate census data is important. I ask all our residents to participate in the census,” commented Mayor Caroline McAuley.

According to census.gc.ca, starting on May 2, Canadians

can complete the census questionnaire online to follow the current COVID-19 restriction. The online questionnaire will be easy, secure and a convenient option that can be used anywhere and at anytime, with no pre-registration or lengthy download processes required.

“The Town passed support for a proclamation by the Mayor, at the January 19, council meeting, supporting and encouraging our residents to participate in the Census. The Town has also supported the census by including several posts including the Proclamation on our social media pages,” commented Chief Administrative Officer, George Rogers.

Lloydminster Interval Home Celebrates 40 Years

2020 marked 40 years of service provided by the Lloydminster Interval Home.

The idea of an Interval Home started in 1979 by a group of concerned citizens spearheaded by Dolores Cummine and Marjorie Nattress but starting up the Interval Home did not come without some challenges.

Founders of the Interval Home first struggled to receive funding or donations to put their ideas to action.

Today, the Lloydminster Interval Home Society is a 33 bed shelter with numerous programs for women, children, youth and men including a self-empowerment program for women who have suffered from family violence, a strength to change program for men with abusive behaviours, numerous youth programs through the Lloydminster Youth Centre and local schools, a Living Well program for Seniors, and Public Education available for businesses, schools, and more, offering information on healthy relationships, the abuse cycle, and topics related to family violence.

Additionally, the Interval Home runs a 24-hour crisis line, five units of second stage transitional housing program, and the “For the Interval” Store, which is a second-hand store which prioritizes those in need. Surplus from “For the Interval” donations are sold to the public with proceeds going towards the Interval Home and supporting those who utilize the society’s services.

“It’s grown from a very small shelter to a robust multifaceted organization within the region,” stated Leanne Wildeman, Resource Development Manager of the Interval Home.

The Interval Home had hoped to have an in-person celebration to commemorate 40 years of serving the community, however, due to COVID-19, a video was produced instead.

Walter Melnychuk JANUARY 28, 2021 Walter Melnychuk passed away on January 28, 2021 in Vermilion at the age of 87 years.

He will be lovingly remembered by his children Melonia (Robin) Nicol, Myron (Colleen), Marvin (Kim), and Melinda (Jim) Zaharko; grandchildren Trentyn and Chelsey; as well as nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Wally was predeceased by his wife of 56 years RoseMarie Melnychuk; and parents John & Nancy Melnychuk.

A Private Funeral Mass will be taking place at St. Olga Ukrainian Catholic Church, Vermilion.

Town Of Vermilion To Offer Sessions To New Electoral Candidates

This program is available in the Hamlets of Lavoy, Ranfurly, and Minburn. Grief A Hard Journey / Who Will Companion?

For those who are on this grief journey, realize you are on the hardest journey of your life? Often the journey seems too hard to navigate and we want to turn inward and shut out the world. Nothing is familiar.

Your lives have changed forever but you are expected to carry on. How can we do this when it is a new journey, life is changed forever and we feel broken in mind soul and body. Often the journey seems too hard to navigate and we turn inward. Question- Is this where our loved one would want us to be? My challenge has always been: “What we do with the rest of our lives is how we can honour the one we love and value”.

Remember in the hard journey there are some factors that add to the weight of our grief and need to be considered.

In “Understanding Grief, Helping Yourself Heal” Dr. Alan Wolfelt lists factors that have a part to play in our unique journey.

1. The Nature of the relationship with the person who died.

2. Circumstances surrounding the death.

3. Circumstances surrounding your support system.

4. Your unique personality.

5. Unique personality of the person who died.

6. Your own cultural background.

7. Your Religious or Spiritual background.

8. Other Crisis or Stressors in your life.

9. Your biological sex.

10. Ritual of Funeral Experience.

Remember to be gentle with yourself as you work through your grief (You are doing the best that you can at this particular time). Learn all you can about the journey you are on and you will survive, one day at a time.

The other part of our topic and question. WHO WILL BE THERE TO COMPANION US ON THIS JOURNEY THROUGH GRIEF? A command in a very famous book (the Bible) says “Love one Another”. Companioning is love in action.

The question often asked is, what can I do?

From those who journey through this grief are some suggestions: PLEASE DON’T • Ask if I am over it yet.

• Tell me that they are in a” better place”.

• Say God never gives more than I can bear.

• Say “At least they are not suffering”.

• Say “I know how you feel”, unless you have had a loss the same way.

• Ask “Are you feeling better?” grief is not a condition that clears up.

• Suggest to get busy and not to think about my loss.

• Say to grieve alone and not with others as it may upset them.

• Don’t suggest that I find another companion, have a baby or there was a right time to die.

On the other hand: PLEASE DO: • Let me tell you my story and I may need to tell you again and again.

• Understand I am confused and hurting, not stupid.

• Let me cry when I need to, try not to be uncomfortable and fix me. I won’t cry forever.

• Give a hug or touch me or hold my hand. When there are no words a touch says you care.

• Say my loved one’s name. They are alive in the griever’s heart, loved and important.

• Try to be real with me. If you tell me you don’t know what to say we can work on that together.

• Join, if you can, with us to share our pain in the celebration, memorial of my loved one.

• Be willing to share in memory the anniversary, birth date and death date. We have not forgotten.

During these winter months is always nice to turn on the oven to do some baking and warm up the house.

Today it is with a batch of cornbread.

Cornbread is best served hot with butter melted into it. It is also very nice with melted butter and honey or jam. Cornbread is a classic to serve with chili. It is also great served with sloppy joes (instead of the bun), baked beans, salads, barbeque meats and greens. Cornbread is a good side dish for home made soups and stews. It can be part of breakfast or brunch with eggs and bacon, ham or sausage. As a desert cornbread can be broken into a bowl or glass with milk poured over it with a dash of honey or your favorite sweetener.

Corn is full of health benefits. Corn contains the antioxidant carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin which promote eye health and help prevent macular degeneration in the eyes.

While corn contains protein, the protein it contains is not compete as it is missing several essential amino acids. In this recipe, the milk that is added serves to provide the missing amino acids, there by creating a more complete protein. Corn contains a variety of B Vitamins, vitamin A, potassium and insoluble fibre. The fiber in corn feeds your gut microbiome and helps you stay full longer. A healthy gut microbiome is a healthy immune system. Nutrients in corn increase blood flow, lower the absorption of cholesterol and help to regulate insulin. The phenolic phytochemicals in corn help regulate how insulin is absorbed and released in the body in a positive

way according to the British Journal of Nutrition.

Cornbread is an example of classic home goodness that is full of healthy benefits.

Cornbread 1 cup of cornmeal 1 1/2 cup milk (regular or buttermilk) 1/2 cup sugar 1 egg 1/3 cup oil 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 1/3 cup flour 1 tablespoon baking powder Pour the milk on the cornmeal and allow to set for 5 – 10 minutes. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Butter or oil and 8 x 8 pan. Stir in the sugar, the egg and the oil. Add in the salt, the flour and the baking powder, and stir it in until well combined.

Pour into the pan and bake for 25 – 30 minutes. Cut into squares to serve. If you prefer savory cornbread instead of sweet, reduce the sugar to 2 tablespoons.

there was a need for a school that the children could attend during the months when they were not working on the farm. To that end, the district was created and a school was built.

That school was built by two men named Farrel and Walker, who were paid $800 to get the school built. The next task was to find a teacher for the

new school and Mary Webb was hired as she had a teacher’s certificate and accepted the pay of $50 per month, which was quite high for the time.

The building of the school went well, with the cost of building materials being $400 and the labour cost being $14 8. The s c ho ol was also painted for $18.

Unfortunately, the floor in the school was not suitable for dancing. While this may not seem like a major issue, but at the time schools were also a gathering place for concerts, events and dances. Since the school as the only community gathering place in the entire area, a proper dance floor was needed. A stable was built but it was built using lumber that was not very thick and a wind storm came along and tore the entire stable down. A new stable was then built, which survived subsequent storms.

The school would close down soon after it opened, sitting closed from 1912 to 1919 due to a lack of students.

In 1919, Janet Ryan would come along as the new teacher for the school.

From May to October, school would run and teachers would find work to pay the bills from November to April.

As for the children, they would travel to school by walking, or by riding horses or taking a carriage if they were lucky enough to have one.

One issue with the school was its access to water. To provide water for the school, two boys carried a pail of water daily into the school from a distance away.

For many years, the school was an important place for the young people of the area, and several lawyers and do c tor s would graduate from that one-room school. Eventually, as was t h e c a se w it h s o m any o n e ro o m schools, the school would close down as the 20 th centur y moved on. In 1950, the school officially closed, and in 1959 the school was converted to a community hall.

Dean Receives International Award For Commitment To Fire Service

(Vermilion, Alta.) Chris Senaratne, dean of the Emergency Training Centre at Lakeland College, has been presented with the 2021 Johnny G. Wilson Memorial Award in recognition of his lifetime of advocacy and commitment to the fire service.

The international award is presented to a person who has dedicated a significant part of their life to the advocacy of professional qualifications in the fire service through accreditation and certification.

It is one of two awards presented at the ProBoard’s annual conference, held virtually on Jan. 11, 2021.

“It was a surprise and I am truly humbled to be awarded the prestigious Johnny G. Wilson Memorial Award by the ProBoard, an international fire service accreditation body,” says Senaratne. “Demonstrating professionalism through a commitment to the field, maintaining sound working relationships with colleagues, and a consistent

ProBoard and for professionalism in the fire service,” says Estepp. “Chris has served on the committee on accreditation since 2012 and he has consistently contributed at the highest possible level, always taking on additional work and leading many of the task groups and other projects that have been formed by the ProBoard.”

The ETC has three distinct client groups: pre-professional students, municipal fire services and industry. Each year, the ETC serves more than 1,800 students in a range of emergency services courses, including firefighting and fire officer training, emergency services technology and applied business in emergency services.

The ETC is dedicated to taking students beyond the classroom, putting theory into practice with extensive live scenarios using the centre’s state-of-the-art training grounds at the Vermilion campus.

Established in the early 1980s, the ProBoard is a non-profit organization committed to establishing internationally-

recognized means of acknowledging professional qualifications achievement in the fire service.

Hearts and Hands Annual Fundraising Drive

During February 2021, Hearts and Hands donation collection boxes will be left with supportive businesses throughout Vermilion. These donations are used to buy supplies for our program. Hearts and Hands support individuals and families in need that live in Vermilion and surrounding area.

COVID-19 has greatly affected our opportunity to hold fundraising events, especially with the continuing shutdown of our local businesses. Cash donations received in 2020 were about 2/3 that of previous years. Food donations were

steady thanks to those made through drop boxes at Riverside Hair, Shoppers Drug Mart and AG Foods (formerly MacDonald Family Foods), as well as The Bargain Store, UFA, Advent Food Hampers (19 in total) and the Minburn Colony for a generous donation of potatoes.

We saw a significant increase in need once the government CERB ceased, mostly due to the inability for clients to find employment. Though there were fewer calls from outlying areas, there was a slight increase in Mannville and a significant increase in Vermilion. What was very noticeable while speaking to many clients was the increased feeling of desperation

Alongside that role, he has served on the ProBoard’s committee on accreditation since 2012. The committee is responsible for reviewing accreditation applications and site visits for the ProBoard.

Saving Wetlands Is A Resolution Canada Must Keep

Amid all the heartening and hope-filled ways Canadians have resolved to make 2021 a year of positive change, one in particular holds water: the commitment to saving our wetlands.

Leading up to 2021, the Government of Canada promised to make significant investments in our environment—and in the wetlands that underpin its health. Today, this commitment must be among our greatest convictions. Our ability to address the colliding crises of biodiversity loss and climate change depend on it. So does our economic recovery.

Upholding our responsibility to conserve and restore wetlands brings us measurably closer to finding solutions to some of the country’s greatest threats. As floods and fires rage more frequently, as sea levels rise and populations of at-risk species continue

to plummet, we’ve reached a point where addressing these challenges individually won’t work. Wetlands, by their nature, can help us tackle them simultaneously. These amazing ecosystems hold and slow the flow of water, sequester carbon and support biodiversity. The challenge ahead of us—all of us—is to value wetlands enough that we keep our promise to protect them so that they may do their job.

The case for saving Canada’s wetlands becomes even more compelling when you consider the economics. Investing in these highly productive ecosystems generates real financial returns. Research that examined Ducks Unlimited Canada’s conservation and restoration efforts revealed that for every dollar invested in wetlands and natural habitats, society receives $22 in economic benefits. This includes naturebased recreation, tourism, and employment. It’s a sound return on investment.

This past September, Canada joined more than 30 countries from around the world in the “High Ambition Coalition” that pledged to protect 30 per cent of their lands and oceans by 2030. Prime Minister Trudeau said key to Canada’s efforts will be “moving forward on protecting our wetlands.” It was a welcome acknowledgement for conservation organizations like ours.

February 2nd is World Wetlands Day. It’s a celebration marking the 1971 adoption of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance. The treaty was signed by global leaders who acknowledged the vital role of wetlands for people and the planet— and who committed to their conservation and sustainable use. Fifty years later, there’s never been a more critical time to heed their creed.

I believe we’re uniquely positioned to seize this opportunity. Because over the past year, Canadians have found new appreciation for wetlands and our natural world. When the hustle and bustle of human activity slowed, we felt the Earth breathe.

We saw marshes, ponds and forests flourish in the space made by a different pace.

We experienced, in profound and personal ways, nature’s role in our well-being.

So, in 2021, saving wetlands is a resolu-

tion Canada must keep. Let’s find resolve in the science that demonstrates the positive impact they have on fighting climate change and bolstering biodiversity. Let’s lean on their economic value to build up our communities. And let’s find strength in the solution that’s sitting right in our own backyard. Wetlands, coupled with strong environmental stewardship led by all Canadians, are an outstretched hand that will help us all back to our feet.

Karla Guyn, PhD, is chief executive officer for Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) which has some 6.5 million acres of wetlands and associated natural habitat under its care.

Dr. Guyn, was raised in Calgary, Alberta and credits her love for the outdoors to the time spent in southern Alberta. Karla obtained a technical diploma in wildlife from Lethbridge College, a B.Sc. in wildlife biology from the University of Montana, and her M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Biology from the University of Saskatchewan. Karla is one of Canada’s leading conservation scientists and has travelled across North America to support wetland and waterfowl conservation. As CEO for DUC, she leads more than 350 staff across the country to deliver on-the-ground habitat conservation, scientific research, education and public policy efforts.

Alberta’s Government Is Investing $17 Million To Ensure The Stabilization Of Performing Arts, Sports And Rodeo Organizations

Alberta’s live experience organizations have been hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. They have lost a full season of programming and revenue but still have ongoing overhead costs. The Stabilize Program will provide one-time grant funding to support live experience presenting and performing arts, sport and rodeo organizations. The funding will help these organizations continue to operate and reopen when it is safe to do so. “This funding is critical to supporting venues and events that build and sustain vibrant communities and our cultural heritage and our mental well-being. Reinvigorating our live experience sector will also bring back jobs and foster tourism to support our economic recovery. According to Statistics Canada, every $1 million in output from live performance businesses generates about 17 direct and indirect jobs in the province.

Canadian Government Officials Recognize International Holocaust Remembrance Day

In 2005, the United Nations General Assembly declared Januar y 27 as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. This January 27 marked 76 years since the liberation of the Nazi Concentration and Ex termination Camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau, in 1945. During the Holocaust more than six million Jewish men, women and children were brutally murdered by the Nazi Regime and it’s collaborators in the Shoah.

The d ay was c ommemorated by Alber ta Premier Jason Kenney who provided a statement in a broadcast. “ We remember today, and ever y day, that the Shoah was one of the greatest crimes in all of human history, the deliberate effort to exterminate the entire population of European Jewry. It was informed by centuries of anti-Semitism, and reminds us of the uniquely

durable and pernicious nature of this ancient hatred,” commented Kenney.

Kenney also went on to say that the day was to honour the survivors of the Holocaust. “ We rededicate ourselves to the critical ongoing work of Holocaust education and commemoration,” said Premier Kenney.

Minister of Diversity and Inclusion and Youth Bardish Chagger also made a statement where she recognized the strength of Holocaust survivors.

“On this day, we also honour the courage, strength, and resilience of all Holocaust survivors and their descendants, some 40,000 of whom came to Canada. May we never forget the horror endured by millions of Jews- let us never be silent in the face of hatred an d d i s c r im in at i o n. N ever ag ain,” commented Minister Chagger.

Minister of Foreign Affairs says that the Shoah was a period of monstrous injustice and human suffering...but we know that the scourge of antisemitism is still with us today. He also noted that last November Prime Minister Trudeau named Irwin Cotler to lead Canada’s special envoy on preser ving Holo caust remembrance and combatting antisemitism. Cotler leads Canada’s delegation to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance and will work with partner countries to in their words, strengthen and promote Holocaust education, remembrance and research in Canada and around the world.

Minister Garneau also announced a substantial funding amount. “ To d ay, C a n a d a i s a n n o u n c i n g $2 million in funding to su p p or t a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization initia-

tive to prevent genocide. Delivered in conjunction with the United States Holo caust Memorial Museum, this initiative addresses the rise of antisemitism and other forms of hate and discrimination through education and intercultural dialogue,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also made a statement commemorating the International Holocaust Remembrance Day paying tribute to those who lost their lives and honouring the survivors. “ The atrocities of the Holocaust have left an unfathomable stain on our history, yet antismitism, discrimination, xenophobia, and violence remain a lived reality for Jewish communites, both here at home and around the world. That is why the Government of Canada will not waver in its commitment to combat antisemitism and all forms of hatred,” stated Prime Minister Trudeau.

Change In Recyclable Collection Provider

As of December 30, 2020, the Town of Ver milion has ac quire d a new service provider for the residential collection of Recyclables and as of February 1, 2021, for commercial collection. Edmonton based Integ rity Waste Solutions will be the new service provider of the collection. “ I n l at e 2 0 2 0 t h e To w n r e t e n d ered the recycle collection contract whi c h had expired. In ad dition, to recycle collection, curbside residential organics collection was included in the tender process,” said Director of Transportation and Utilities Derek Young for the Town of Vermilion.

During the retendering of the s e r v i c e s , t h e To w n o f Ve r m i l i o n received three complete and competitive quotes.

“Quik Pick did submit a bid during the tender process but after a thorough review council decided to accept the bid from Integrity Waste Solutions as the best option for Vermilion. Price is a main element considered during the evaluation process among many other factors looked at,” explained Young.

Young also went on to say that the Town is anticipating the kick-off for the organics collection to begin in the spring of 2021.

“We will be finalizing the details in the coming days and will be made public in February and there will be no rate increases for both residential and business solid waste fees in 2021,” said Young.

Integrity Waste Solutions has been an entity for one year but purchased Derr i c k D i s p o s al. “ O ur ow ner s hi p group has quite a bit of experience over the last 20 years in Alber ta,” stated owner Chris Guenette.

According to Guenette, they were part of the original group that started recycling programs in Alberta, especially in rural municipalities. They championed recycling programs in all sorts of communities such as the greater Edmonton area, Sher wood Park, St. Albert, Stony Plain, Gibbons etc.

“These areas that didn’t have recycling programs in the early to mid2000s, we were the ones that brought recycling programs to market originally. It is something our ownership group, myself per sonally are ver y pas si o nate a b out ... we ju st like it done a certain way, we like to service communities, we like to develop relationships and ultimately we like to

put for th meaningful programs that make an environmental difference,” explained Guenette.

In terms of tendering a bid to the Tow n of Ver m ili o n a s t h ey are a n Edmonton based company, Guenette says that they don’t consider Vermilion out of their service range and that they were impressed with Vermilions recycling program and that is what really drew them to operating on the edge of their operational range because that is just so important. “ What Vermilion has done in the recycling and waste industry is almost unique where the Town has mandated curbside collection which isn’t uncomm o n b u t a l s o m a n d ate d t h e b u s i nesses participate in a recycling diversion program, so every business in the town has to go through the Town for their recycling services that’s actually not as common as you might think.

This program that Vermilion is championing is a program that I believe will earn them an award from the recycling council this year. I believe it is that significant with the amount of diversion we are planning to take from the waste streams this year with the upcoming organics program, the curbside recycling program, the business recycling p r o g r a m. N o r m a l l y w h at h a p p e n s is a town administrates a recycling program and its for curbside collection residences and the businesses are not mandated to participate, a lot do on their own accord but for municipality kind of forcing businesses to adopt a recycling program it’s fairly unprecedented, it’s not completely, but fairly unprecedented in Alber ta. So, it ’s something Vermilion itself should be very proud of,” stated Guenette.

Because Integrity Waste Solutions is an Edmonton based company their current plan is to travel from Edmonton to do the ser vice, but Guenette mentioned that they run natural gas vehicles which is another part of recycling and environment initiatives and are quite a bit cheaper to operate and they have almost no emissions especially pollutants and that it still supports Alberta’s economy.

“Having natural gas vehicles allowed us to be quite competitive on our bid,” stated Guenette.

Guenette also does not see traveling from Edmonton to Vermilion to provide the service as an issue and has contingenc ies in place if they experience any mechanical issues or weather conditions. The only thing that could disrupt ser vice could be the possibility of a road closure due

to weather.

Guenette commented that they are incredibly excited to be chosen for this program and that they have a real deep commitment to performing recycling programs correctly. They are committed to ensuring the material is disposed of correctly for example, not in landfills.

“We are processing it at our facility, you will not hear about us improperly handling the material. This is a great communit y for us and we are ver y excited to be participating in it and we hope that sentiment is conveyed to the residents,” said Guenette.

At semester break, students received the Friday and Monday off to have a long weekend from January 29 to February 1. On Friday, teachers used that day for meetings, phone calls, planning and marking. As well, a group of staff made a trip to JR Robson School to check out their smart boards. On Monday, teachers were at school for their professional learning day, doing more training on ISPs (Individual Support Plans) and completing them for students.

January 25 and 26 were extremely cold and as a consequence, students had to stay indoors during their recess breaks.

Because students were confined to their classroom all day, both students and staff were happy when students could finally get some fresh air and blow off a little steam by going outside for their recesses.

Our next assembly is on February 2.

When we have our virtual assembly, it is always fun to see what clothing others are sporting.

Starting February 3, we are hosting the VES Great Challenge. Our focus is on kindness, and each day we are proposing that students accept the challenges of being kind to themselves, their family, their friends, their classmates, and the VES staff. We thank Mrs. Joa for organizing this heartfelt event.

VES is always looking for ways to connect with residents in long term care and assisted living. Prior to Christmas, the Grade 5B class made Christmas ornaments and the Grade 4B class made Christmas cards and we sent them to our Vermilion Seniors. Now the Kindergarten children are gearing up to make something for these residents for Valentines’ Day. We sure do miss seeing the residents in person, and we hope the day

comes soon that we can be back in their buildings, sharing and visiting.

Sale Finalized For New RCMP Detachment

Due to the current state and size of Vermilion’s RCMP Detachment, conversation surrounding renovating or building a new detachment have been ongoing since former Mayor Bruce Macduff was in office, according to Mayor Caroline McAuley.

New cell standards already had required a renovation in the current RCMP detac hment, however, the size of the detachment called into question whether the detachment should simply move to a bigger location to improve detachment functionality and to satisfy these standards.

A multi-emergency service building was considered, which would have RCMP and ambulance services in the old Webb’s building

and seemed fitting as the fire hall is across the street. However, the RCMP preferred a larger area with better access to main roads, which led to the sale of the Webb’s building to Ireland Farms.

During the town council meeting on January 19, a motion was approved that would accept a $950,000 offer from Public Services and Procurement Canada for the purchase of four lots in the Junction 16/41 development to build a new detachment. “ We’re extremely happy that it ’s done,” commented Mayor Caroline McAuley, “it will really solidify RCMP presence in the community.”

According to Mayor McAuley, in approximately two years, the RCMP will have moved into the completed RCMP detachment.

When you think of all the things that make Alberta home, it doesn’t take long till Alberta beef enters the conversation. The two are as synonymous as peanut butter and jelly. Every summer at the Vermilion Fair we see some of the finest beef cows in the province on exhibit. We see them in pristine condition, well-groomed and well fed, one could mistakenly think that showing an animal that looks like this comes easy, but that is simply not the case. Cattle showing is a true competition. It takes countless hours in the barn, seemingly endless chores, grooming, and the blood, sweat, and tears of the competitor. All that and more is required to raise a champion animal. For our younger competitors it is a great way to learn skills that will stick with them into adulthood. Leadership, delayed gratification, time-management, and confidence. All these lessons are ingrained in beef showing culture. In my own observation, livestock showing is wholly unique

in its ways of sportsmanship and how competitors are always willing to share helpful tips and lend a hand to one another.

Another one of the standout elements that makes it unique is that success is ultimately determined by effort over experience. Everyone has the same opportunity to win big. In cattle showing you truly get out what you put in. The beef committee is always working hard to ensure a smooth show where every competitor gets their time to shine.

Another highly anticipated event held each summer is the high-octane spectacle, team roping. A true test of skill requiring close cooperation and timing between not only two highly skilled ropers but their horses as well. The reason roping is done in teams stems from the old days of cattle roping where large steers had to be branded and the task would have been impossible for just one man. The team, composed of a “header” and a “healer”, work in unison to accomplish their task.

The header is responsible for roping the

animal around the horns. The healer then moves in and ropes the animal around its hind legs. Accomplishing this requires an incredible amount of cohesion, hard work

and endless practice. Those are the tenets of team roping since its inception and those tenets continue to be upheld today as the sport continues to evolve.

20 Per cent Reduction In Crop Insurance Premiums For 2021

Devin Dreeshan, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry announced that Alberta Farmers will receive a 20 per cent reduction in crop insurance premiums this year.

According to Alberta’s government and Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC), this reduction will save farmers more than $55 million on their crop insurance premiums in 2021, increase the

competitiveness of Alberta farmers, and it will support job creators and boost the rural economy.

A farm with 2,000 insured acres will save about $8,000 this year alone. This puts money back into the pockets of Alberta farmers right away. Agriculture continues to be an economic bright light and Alberta’s government is strengthening the sector even more, commented Dreeshan.

The reduction was put in place to try and alleviate some stress from farmers as the looming 500 per cent increase in the Federal Carbon Tax, a misguided Clean Fuel Standard, and an impending punitive fertilizer limit regulation all imposed by the federal government.

“Reducing insurance premiums by 20 per cent will help our farmers – more federal taxes, increased costs and punitive regulations will not.” Dreeshan also stated, “This

$55 million dollar injection into agriculture is part of Alberta’s Recovery Plan which is a bold, ambitious long-term strategy to build, diversify, and create tens of thousands of jobs now. By building schools, roads and other core infrastructure we are benefiting our communities. By diversifying our economy and attracting investment with Canada’s most competitive tax environment, we are putting Alberta on a path for a generation of growth.”

health and wellness. “For the past several years, UFA has been a supporter of 4-H Canada in the development of their Healthy Living Initiative, providing resources to empower youth in their well-being, including in the area of mental health,” says Kimberly MacDonald, Community Investment Manager at UFA. “At UFA we recognize the unique role 4-H plays supporting youth in the development of leadership skills and resilience, something more important now than ever, and would like to announce an additional $15K donation to help ensure the resources are available when youth need it most.”

UFA will also donate an additional $10K to the Do More Ag Foundation, who continue to champion the well-being of Canadian producers. Their vision includes supporting a culture in agriculture where producers are encouraged, empowered and supported to take care of their mental well-being.

The AgriStability program was once a key program for Alberta farmers, designed to protect them against large declines in farming income. Iconic Albertan cattle ranchers and grain farmers were especially reliant on it as a guaranteed backstop should they face a bad year. It accounted for millions of dollars in the pockets of farmers who needed it the most.

However, farmers were blindsided in 2012 when the previous federal Conservative government cut AgriStability. The cuts included a “Reference Margin Limit”, which limits payments and makes the program too complex. Farmers have become increasingly frustrated that there is no predictability on receiving payment. As a result, most farmers do not even bother signing up for the program any more. They don’t believe it’s worth their time or money.

Recently, the federal Liberal Agriculture Minister proposed to improve the program by removing the “Reference Margin Limit” and increasing the compensation rate back up to 80%. These proposed fixes to AgriStability would produce $170 million in direct support payments to farmers annually. Alberta farmers would enjoy a substantial financial boost by receiving a significant amount of those support dollars.

To make these changes happen, the

federal Liberal Government need provinces to agree to pay their 40% share.

Provinces across Canada are agreeing, and it has come down to the Prairie governments to step up in support of their farmers.

Prairie farmers are urging their provincial governments to accept the deal, but the UCP Government does not seem enthusiastic to repair this broken program.

The UCP Government has created the narrative that the Trudeau administration doesn’t do anything for Albertans. But here is a tangible example of action by the Feds that would provide a huge benefit to Alberta. This precious opportunity for farmers may be sacrificed on the altar of politics.

Proper support programs are vital to the success of farmers and rural Alberta as a whole. I worked with Farm Credit Canada and in agricultural finance, and I know the financial stress farmers can face. The Kenny government must listen to farmers on this one, take the deal, and get this important AgriStability program back on track.

Ronald has had a long career in tax and finance, including at Farm Credit Canada, Canada Revenue Agency and the Government of Alberta. Ron was also the federal Liberal candidate for Sturgeon River-Parkland in the 2019 election.

It’s called calving difficulty for a reason.

They’re difficult to deliver, it’s difficult for the calf to survive, it’s difficult to watch it die, and it’s difficult to lose the $1,250 the calf could have sold for in fall. The Beef Cattle Research Council’s 2019 Adoption Rates of Recommended Practices by Cow-Calf Operators in Canada report indicated that around half of all preweaning death losses occur within 24 hours after birth, with a significant proportion of those attributed to calving difficulties. How you help a calf in the first few hours after a difficult birth is critical to determining whether it will survive to weaning or not.

It’s well known that providing timely calving assistance, effective calf resuscitation and colostrum are critical. But how you do these things is just as important as what you do.

These calves have already been through a lot – providing the wrong kind of help can make it harder for them to survive. Sometimes doing the wrong thing is also harder for you.

In 2019, a research team led by Jennifer Pearson and Claire Windeyer of the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine studied Benchmarking Calving Management Practices on Western Canada Cow-Calf Operations. The report highlighted a few tweaks to common calving management practices that could significantly improve the survival of calves from difficult births.

What They Did: Producers participating in the Western Canadian Cow-Calf Surveillance Network were surveyed about how they managed pregnant cows and heifers through-

out calving. The survey included specific questions about how quickly producers intervened to assist calving, how they resuscitated calves after assisted births, colostrum management and record keeping practices.

What They Learned: Half of the 97 producers that responded to the survey were from Alberta, with 30% from Saskatchewan and 20% from Manitoba. The most common herd size was 226 breeding females and ranged from 37 to 2,615.

Get ‘em out: At least one heifer or cow needed calving assistance on over 90% of operations. Overall, 4.9% of females (3.2% of cows and 13.5% of heifers) required calving assistance. This is a considerable improvement over the 12.2% reported by Dr. Cheryl Waldner in an earlier, larger Western Canadian study conducted in 2002.

Get ‘em up: Over 90% of producers prefer to resuscitate calves by rubbing them vigorously or poking the nasal septum with straw. Those are both very good things to do. Alarmingly, 50% of producers considered hanging a calf upside down to be an effective option to help resuscitate it. Don’t do that. It makes things worse. When a calf is hung upside-down, the fluid that comes out is from the stomach, not the lungs. In fact, if you hang a calf upsidedown, its guts press down on its lungs and make it harder to breathe. Why hurt your back to suffocate the calf?

Get ‘em fed: Ninety-seven per cent of producers checked to see if calves had received colostrum, by observing the calf nursing, observing whether the dam had been nursed, or whether the calf looked full. When

harder time absorbing the antibodies. Properly resuscitating a calf can help it get going faster, but please don’t make things worse by hanging it upside down. Save your back and give it a rubdown instead. Colostrum replacers can be good insurance, but don’t use dairy colostrum. Write problems down when you observe them, before you forget, and use those records to make better decisions in fall. There are no one-size fits-all solutions to guarantee a successful calving season. But some ‘solutions’ never work.

supplemental colostrum was needed, nearly 70% used colostrum from cows in their own herd (ideal). Commercial colostrum replacers (also helpful) were less popular. Fewer than 10% of producers sometimes used colostrum obtained from a dairy. Don’t do that.

Dairy colostrum is dilute and doesn’t contain enough antibodies to protect the calf. Dairy colostrum can also contain costly diseases you don’t want (e.g. Johne’s disease). It’s important to note that commercial colostrum “supplements” are less concentrated than “replacers.” When producers are using powdered products, read the label to determine how many packages are needed to meet the recommended 100 to 200 grams of immunoglobulin G (IgG) required by a newborn calf.

Write ‘em down: Calving records commonly included birth date (95%), calf identification (90%), and calving ease (74%). Aggressive behavior, udder conformation and mismothering were rarely recorded, but were among the most frequent reasons for culling.

Records are much more reliable than your memory, especially with large herds. More complete calving records will help you cull the right cows and select the right replacement heifers in fall.

So What … Does This Mean to Me? The first few hours of a calf’s life had a big impact on whether it survived to weaning and sold for $1,250 last fall. Calves that experience a difficult birth are more likely to get sick and die before weaning. Whether they’re assisted or not, calves that experience a difficult birth are slower to get up, slower to nurse, may consume less colostrum, and have a

The following is part two of a series of three posts featuring calving management practices and intervention strategies to help producers optimize newborn calf health and well-being. Read part one to learn about resuscitation techniques.

Newborn calves are born with virtually no immunity of their own. Unlike other mammals, a cow’s placenta does not allow antibodies to pass from the mother to the calf during pregnancy, which means the calf must receive its initial immunity from the antibody-rich colostrum, or first milk, of the cow. This initial immunity is essential because it provides protective antibodies against many of the diseases that affect newborn calves, such as calf scours, navel abscesses, arthritis and pneumonia. If the calf is at risk of not having adequate colostrum, such as if it had a difficult birth, is a twin, is delivered via c-section, has a weak suckle reflex, or hasn’t sucked in the first few hours of life, supplementation is recommended. If a calf requires colostrum supplementation, here are a few things to consider.

• The ideal intake is two litres of colostrum within the first t wo hours of life and another two litres in the next eight to twelve hours.

• C o l o s t r u m f r o m t h e c a l f ’ s mother is the preferred source.

• Make sure to clean and disinfect bottles or tubes after feeding.

Have separate marked bottles for colostrum for newborns versus electrolytes or medicines for sick calves.

• Thaw frozen colostrum slowly. If it

heats up too fast it will destroy the proteins. Set frozen colostrum in hot (but not boiling) water. Do not use the microwave to thaw colostrum as it breaks down the protein.

At this time of year, industr y and landowners often take advantage of the cooler weather to burn debris and brush on their land. However, under current conditions landowners need to be extremely careful their actions do not start a wildfire.

The majority of wildfires are started by humans. Alberta Wildfire urges anyone doing winter burning to ensure their piles have been fully extinguished.

‘If fires are not properly put out, they can spread and burn underground, even under the snow and ice, all winter.

Under the right conditions, these fires can re-emerge in the spring as wildfires,’ says Story.
