February: Approximately 60 people attended an Information Rally held by the local 55 United Nurses of Alberta in front of the Vermilion Health Centre and Midtown Medical Clinic on February 13. March: A Citizenship Ceremony was hosted at the Lloydminster Centennial Civic Centre by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada – Edmonton Office, and the City of Lloydminster on March 12. April: A senior citizen (86-years-old) at Horizon Place in Vermilion painted this piece to help her pass the time while she is self isolating due to COVID-19. May: The Vermilion Curling Club’s Grow The Ice Plant Fund Committee began seeding the land previously donated by the Ferbey family on May 14. The Vermilion River Naturalist Society Holds Christmas Bird Count

COVID-19 and extremely windy weather conditions didn’t deter birdwatchers from participating in the 121st Audubon Christmas Bird Count on December 19.

Twenty-three birders participated in the count and covered a 24 kilometer diameter circle around Vermilion.

“We had 10 feeder watchers and 13 field observers. Some went through the park, and two separate groups did inside the town and we had the four quadrants of the area covered. They were all separate groups due to COVID and they were members of the same household due to the restrictions that are place,” commented Iris Davies.

According to Davies there are quite a few birds who don’t migrate each year such as Black-Capped Chickadees, all

woodpeckers etc.

“We have birds from up north that actually come down here, like Snowy Owls and Red Polls and they consider that as migrating, we are like their winter vacation area, so keep your feeders full, the birds that belong here will be really grateful,” Davies said with a chuckle.

Due to the windy conditions birds seen were not as plentiful during the count as it has been in past years, but it was still a successful day.

“We did see some flock type birds like Bohemian Waxwings and some Whitewinged Crossbills. There were four Mallards on the open water by the dam, so hopefully the water stays open. In total we recorded 26 species with a total of 1,282 individual birds. W h e n 2019 wa s ringing out and 2020 was ringing in so many people were hopeful for a better year, but that was not in the cards.

Twenty-twenty turned out to be the worst hand in the deck for so many. Every New Year one of the biggest wishes from everyone is the wish of good health, well we all know how that panned out; we got hit with the Corona Virus when it reared its ugly head in Canada.

It was in February of 1908 that the Millerdale School District was organ ize d w i t h Fr an k Buck serving as the chairman and Charles Buck taking on the role of secretary at a salary of $40 per year. The fact that the district was named Millerdale comes down to the fact that the original settlers in the area were of the names H.R. Miller and C.M. Miller, giving the district their name.

In May of 1908, $1,000 was borrowed by a debenture sale in order to build a new school for the children, with W.H. Buck and T. Campbell being hired to build the school, using lumber provided by a Mr. McPhee.

It would be almost a year before the building was complete, with it officially being finished on April 21, 1909.

The school would open that September and operate until Christmas. The first teacher at the school was John Corrigall, who was a medical student from

Goodbye 2020 And Good Riddance

Hundreds of thousands of Canadians have contracted COVID and thousands have reportedly lost their life. Many businesses have folded due to mandated shutdowns and the Alberta economy has been the worst it has been in years, hopes for a better economic year was ripped away from all of us and while it may follow us into 2021 I am hoping it will be short-lived and businesses can start recovering.

This year has been a year filled with trials and tribulations and I am completely sick of the constant arguing on Facebook between the believers and non-believ-

ers. I am tired of people being insulted and called names if they didn’t follow the same beliefs as the other person. I am tired of the conspiracy theories whether they are true or not. I am just tired of it all, what happened to being ‘In This Together?’ I remember when it all started the sense of solidarity in Alberta, it was strong and now it has turned into bashing each other on social forums. There is no support for each other and above all no empathy from many, it’s all for one and one for all out there! Our province has become one filled with quarreling causing mass dissension, why not just

agree to disagree on the subject. If you believe it is all a hoax then fine, but you don’t have to make your ‘conversation starter’ post and then bash someone because they do believe in the severity of the pandemic! The conversations I have read are just plain pathetic and demoralizing.

I am glad to say goodbye and good riddance to 2020 and I am hoping beyond belief that 2021 is a better year as I can’t see it being worse than 2020.

Millerdale School

Kingston and wanted to try teaching as a summer job to earn some extra money. At the time, he made $60 per month. The inspector at this time was James Loucks and tuition fees for nonresident students was four cents per day attended.

In 1910, Susie Robinson took over as a teacher at $60 a month and in 1911, a well was dug at the school. During those early years, the attendance at the school was quite small and one year there were only six students. In 1914, the school was struck by lightning resulting in repairs on the building and an insurance policy being taken out that cost $20 for three years.

The school may have been small but it also boasted a library with several classic works of literature in the library.

Additions to the library would happen on an annual basis and many people in the area enjoyed getting books to read, especially during the colder months of the year.

I learned that you can live in a Sci-Fi movie, to wash our hands for 20 seconds, stay home if we are sick and support small locally owned businesses. I wondered if there were more people that didn’t understand one of the wars that we are in? Let me explain with recent data, 97.9 percent of people employed in the private sector are employed by small business, 1.9 percent in mediums sized business, and .02 percent in large business. Interestingly, approximately 30 percent of Canadians are employed in the public sector, Since 1969 government, health, education, and infrastructure. Of those the 97.9 percent of

private sector small business employees, taxes are paid to pay for the public sector. Shocking isn’t it. Whether we like it or not, COVID has created a war against small business, the very people who collectively pay for the majority of our public sector. Canada, your province and your community needs people awake enough to understand the importance of supporting your locally owned small businesses. Rise and shine.

The over 99 percent of Canadian private sector businesses that are small and medium make up over 53.3 percent of Canada’s Gross Domestic Product.

Small businesses can sometimes grow to medium sized business, which can be bought out and absorbed into big business. The big fish eating the little fish for increased market share, to kill competition, own patents, control price and increase profits is a common practice.

In these types of scenarios indirectly the hard work of small and medium sized businesses can often be part of the big business’s contribution to the GDP. All figures are the latest posted of the Government of Canada webpage.

During COVID our GDP dropped at total of negative 13.2 in the first two quarters, and rebounded by 8.9 in the third quarter for an overall loss of negative 4.3. So, did that money leave Canada and small businesses through American owned Amazon purchases, or did it just evaporate forever, because of the forced closure and reduced production of so many Canadian owned small busi-

nesses? What is clear is that we need to suppor t Canadian business, and our local small businesses. During the COVID shutdown of my small business in March, I went to the post office to try and get my mail, only to hear about how they were so overrun, trying to deliver an insane number of packages from Amazon. A sad day for locally owned brick and mortar small businesses. I have no idea of how many of the packages were from Canada, and how many from the United States & China, via Amazon, but either way our GDP sank to its lowest levels ever, when Canadian owned local small businesses were forced largely out of the picture by law.

Numerous studies show that money that is made from small business is recirculated back into your community many times more than profits from large foreign owned box stores and franchises. More importantly, local small business, spend in their community.

Locally owned small businesses invest in the communities they are in, supporting hospital foundations, youth sports, and various other community groups. If that is gone it is doubtful that American Amazon businesses or big companies that are foreign owned with shareholders will have any authority or interest to contribute to your community, but they will take your money, and have it leave your country for good. Even though small business is the largest employer collectively in the public sector recent data shows that only 26 percent of those businesses are doing the same as before COVID. If you choose to shop with foreign owned businesses because their million-dollar advertising budget tells you that they are the best price over Canadian owned, it will not end well.

Going into 2021, we can choose to be victoriours in the fight to keep Canada’s largest employer.

Farmstead Market & More Opens In Kitscoty

Farmstead Market & More opened on December 1 in Kitscoty. Owner Angie McLean wanted to bring a business to the community that would bring excitement and unique shopping. “Kitscoty is such a small town and so close to Lloyd that our main street has been dying out and we need to be able to support our locals and bring people into the community and offer things to those that do not go to Lloyd often. Kitscoty just needs something to help our small economy and even more with the year we have had with COVID,� commented

McLean. All of the products at Farmstead Market & More come from Canadian companies and most vendors are local to Alberta.

There is a wide variety of products, such as; food, produce, bath and body, home dĂŠcor, and clothing. McLean stated, “To date we currently have 92 vendors with 30 more coming the first days of January and more all the time.â€?

Farmstead Market & More is located on Main Street Kitscoty, 4908 50th street - the white shop. The hours in January will be Tuesday-Friday 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Saturdays 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., and are closed Sundays and Mondays.

Kitscoty RCMP Seeking Dash Cam Footage To Assist In Armed Robbery Investigation

Blackfoot, Alta. – On Dec. 28, 2020, Kitscoty RCMP received a complaint of a carjacking that had occurred at approximately 9 p.m. in the area of the intersection of Township 494 and Range Road 20 in the County of Vermilion River, Alta.

Fur ther investigation indicates a male wearing a red winter jacket and a face covering allegedly blocked the highway, causing the victim to stop their vehicle. The male suspect is alleged to have pointed a firearm and forced the two occupants from the vehicle before fleeing in the victim’s vehicle—a 2019 Kia Soul with a Saskatchewan license plate.

The 2019 Kia Soul, grey in color and

bearing a Saskatchewan license plate of 291LZZ, has not been located.

Kitscoty RCMP are requesting dash cam footage from anyone who may have been travelling in the area of the intersection of Township Road 494 and Range Road 20 in the County of Vermilion River (also described as being south of Blackfoot, Alta.) between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Dec. 28, 2020.

Possible Partial-Regionalization For County Of Minburn Fire Services

Recently, Behr Integrated Solutions were contracted by the County of Minburn to submit a report on how the County can improve their fire services.

Dear Editor: I was appalled by the recent news reports indicating the several Alberta MLA’s including at least two cabinet ministers travelled to locations such as Hawaii,

a report recommending the partial regionalization of fire services throughout the County.

“We’re still in the preliminary phases of the process,” said County of Minburn Fire Chief Mike Fundytus.

One of the reasons partial regionalization was recommended is to increase efficiencies on the administrative side.

With the county’s current system, a lot of processing is done at both the town and county level, and partial regionalization would make the county a managing partner so that paper work only has to be done once.

The report was rather timely as the fire services agreement with Vegreville is up for renewal in December of 2021.

These people do not seem to realize that many Albertans had to forgo their traditions this year because of COVID. Clearly she did not feel the rules applied to her.

Any of the MLA’s who chose to travel demonstrated extremely poor leadership.

What was even more disturbing was Premier Kenney’s reaction when the news broke. While he claimed to be upset he did not take any action because he had not “explicitly directed” these individuals not to travel. It seems that Kenney was

Glad Tidings Pentecostal Assembly in Vermilion presented ‘The Reason for the Season, It Came Upon a Midnight Clear’ a live nativity scene on Christmas Eve where residents could drive by to view the scene. Kitscoty 4-H Beef Club

Jake Tremmel, Kitscoty 4H Club Reporter ary 20, 2021. We are all hoping that the Submitted COVID restrictions will be lifted so we can The Kitscoty 4H beef club started the get together and see everyone again in 2020/2021 program with a meeting on person.

October 21, 2020. This year our club has 24 members: one Clever, 12 Junior, two Intermediate, and eight Senior members. Everyone is excited for the 4H year to get started again.

Our weigh in day was held on November 11th at Hiltz Land and Livestock. The weather was nice and warm and all the calves’ looked great. Following the weigh in, we held a socially distanced meeting at the Kitscoty hall.

Our third meeting was on December 16, 2020 via Zoom due to the latest Covid-19 restrictions. At the meeting the members opened their secret Santa gifts that were delivered earlier in the week.

Vermilion RCMP Seek To Identify Suspect

Vermilion RCMP Submitted

Vermilion, Alta – Vermilion RCMP are investigating a mischief and theft from a vehicle parked overnight within the town of Vermilion. On December 20, 2020 items stolen from the vehicle included a debit card. This card was used at multiple locations in Vermilion, by an unknown male.

Vermilion RCMP are seeking to iden-

tify this male in the attached surveillance photos.

Alberta RCMP Police Dog Services Had Busy Year Responding To 2,800 Calls

Edmonton West Police Dog Services Submitted

Edmonton – Alberta RCMP Police Dog Services (PDS) had a busy 2020.

They responded to 2,80 0 calls for service and captured over 900 criminals. Of these 2,800 calls: • Approximately 650 involved firearms or other weapons • 5 7 0 i n v o l v e d v i o l e n c e - r e l a t e d offences • 450 calls were for missing people • Over 950 calls were for proper ty crime related offences • PDS deployed in a tracking profile over 700 times which resulted in 400 captures The majorit y of 2020 was spent with Alber tans experiencing some stage of lockdown due to the COVID19 pandemic. Despite these unique circumstances, there was no shor tage of work for our Police Dog Service teams. Part of why they are so busy is their key role in rural property crime

initiatives. PDS teams are used in a primar y role in locating and apprehending rural property crime suspects.

The Alberta RCMP PDS is comprised o f 18 t e a m s s t r a t e g i c a l l y p l a c e d throughout the province. These teams are trained to track, as well as search for, suspects/missing persons, crime scene evidence, firearms, as well as controlled substances or explosives.

Helping Manage Anxiety After Loss

Loss is difficult--even more so during a pandemic.

Worry and anxiety can develop after a major loss. Anxiety is a general feeling of tenseness or uneasiness. Anxiety can cause physical symptoms, such as an upset stomach or a headache. It can also cause you to act in ways that are unusual for you, such as being more demanding, less patient, or more irritable.

Worries and anxiety can sometimes seem to take over your life, making you feel like everything is falling apart at the

same time. You may need to slow down and take things one at a time. If you are feeling overwhelmed, ask for help from someone you trust.

You can manage your worry and anxiety by: Talking or writing about the things that are bothering you. Even if you are not sure what is bothering you, finding words for your feelings often helps you figure out what is causing your anxiety.

Taking charge of whatever you can.

Making plans to deal with your day-today activities and concerns helps relieve the worry and anxiety that springs from

a sense of insecurity. However, resist the urge to make major life decisions when you are anxious or worried.

Allowing other people to do some things for you that you would normally do yourself. This may be difficult. If worries and concerns are interfering with your ability to take care of personal needs such as getting groceries and other responsibilities, ask for help from others. Allowing other people to help you, such as dropping off groceries, also helps them, because it gives them an opportunity to show their care and concern for you.

CPCA Partners With Lloyd Ex

Recently the Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association announced a partnership with the Lloydminster Agricultural Exhibition Hall in which Lloyd Ex will be hosting a nine-day racing event from July 9-17.

The event will hopefully become an annual partnership.

“We’re looking at hosting for three years, and are hoping to make it permanent,” said Lloyd Ex General Manager Jenelle Saskiw.

The CPCA has a history with Lloyd Ex. For 25 years, the Lloyd Ex hosted CPCA Finals in conjunction with the Colonial Days. According to Chuck Driver Director DJ King, the Calgary Stampede cancelled 27 wagons, which opened this opportu-

nity with the CPCA and Lloyd Ex. “We’ve been trying to have a big show for people that don’t go to Calgary,” commented King, “The main idea is to sustain chuckwagon driving and western heritage.”

The show will consist of eight days of aggregate racing in which the winner wins a truck and on the ninth day, there will be a $100,000 dash.

The CPCA has 36 spots they hope to fill for the event, with nine heats each night.

“We’re thrilled to be working with such a great partner,” commented Saskiw.

While the COVID-19 guidelines or public health conditions are unpredictable at this time, Lloyd Ex will be working closely with SaskHealth to determine what guidelines should be in place for the event.

A life-long animal lover, McCabe was interested in exploring more about the ways animals can contribute to wellness after she graduated from Lakeland’s child and youth care program in 2012. When Lakeland announced

an animal assisted wellness certificate program in collaboration with the Dreamcatcher Animal Assisted Wellness Academy in 2018, she was quick to enrol. “ I really think that animals help people in amazing ways,” McCabe

It also helps with engagement, especially with clients who struggle to open up and talk or have anxiety. It doesn’t minimize those issues but it helps with that anxiety, helps the client engage and makes them more comfortable.”

B u i l d i n g o n a p r ev i o u s c r e d e n tial, the program teaches students about the human-animal bond, animal assisted interventions, and the ethics of animal integration into settings, as well as animal welfare, health and wellness.

Though the program is designed to be completed in one year, McCabe completed the program over two years while working full-time as a family school liaison. She finished the practicum por tion of the program at the Dreamcatcher Academy last summer, which proved to be a life- changing experience.

“It was amazing to learn about things I hadn’t even thought about before, like the laws and legalities around animal wellness, as well as the ethics that are involved,” McCabe says. “To experience what clients would experience and to be able to see exactly how you would fit animal assisted wellness into your practice was amazing. It was all so natural and I learned about how important it is to be mindful of what the animal is experiencing and communicating, the same way I’m mindful of the client’s feelings too.”

The entire experience has inspired McCabe to pursue further studies in the field of animal behavior and wellness. “ Before, I thought I could get an animal and bring it into work and that would be fine but it ’s ac tually not ver y ethical for anybody,” McCabe explains. “If anybody wants to incorporate animals into their practice, this course is the way to go and definitely the first step you want to take.”
