Unique Natural Gas Utility Projects In The County Of Vermilion River

On top of independently distributing natural gas to homes and buildings in the county for the last 40 years, the County of Vermilion River’s Natural Gas Utility department has been gathering excess methane from oilfield sites for domestic use for over 20 years.

In 2019, gathering and utilization of natural gas emissions in the oilfield reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 133,000 tonnes. Excess oilfield gas supplies 57 per cent of the total volume of natural gas in the county.

The utilization of natural gas collected and distributed by the county is not only for homes, but has also been used for barbecues, grain dryers,

and as of 2016- for county fleet vehicles as well.

In 2016, the County launched a pilot project to convert county vehicles to natural gas. As of today, 11 vehicles are now bi-fuel, meaning they can run off of both gasoline and natural gas. Over the next five years, the county hopes to have 40 fleet vehicles converted to natural gas.

The process of fuel conversion is relatively simple according to Natural Gas Utility Director Louis Genest.

It involves the installation of an additional gas tank, and the installation of equipment on the vehicle engine so the engine allows natural gas into it.

cot y, where despite being a public station, the county will be the primary customer. With it’s location, the station has gotten some traffic from Highway 16. “ If there was a market for it, we would build more refuelling stations in the county,” Genest said.

Genest also mentioned that the county also has some potential c o m m er c i a l c u s to m er s l o o k i n g to convert their fleet to natural gas.

While the construction of natural gas refuelling stations is costly, natural gas is much cheaper and prices do not fluctuate nearly as much as gasoline prices do. Currently, the county is charging 60 cents a litre to refuel at their natural gas station. The conversion project has reduced fuel cost for the county fleet by $105,000.

“Natural gas prices haven’t changed significantly in 15 years,” according to Genest.

As well as the economic benefits, the conversion of vehicles to natural gas has environmental benefits.

In 15 years, the county’s conversion to natural gas vehicles has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by just under 13,000 tonnes.

The use of natural gas for grain dryers has also become quite popular in the last year. “ We’ ve a l ways h ad 15 - 3 0 g r a i n dryers,” said Genest. This year, the county added 20 more, which resulted in the installation of 60 kilometres of pipeline in the county.

Typical grain dryers burn up to 61 million BTUs, which is equivalent to a b out 20 - 3 0 h o m e s, ac c or d in g to Genest. Since grain dryers can only run on propane or natural gas, and propane can be up to six times more expensive than natural gas, natural gas is the typical route to fuelling grain dryers.

In her retirement, Boehr and her husband will be moving. They look forward to settling down into a new home. Once moved, Boehr will be focusing on taking care of her mother and may explore some volunteering opportunities in her new community.

“Thank you to Vermilion and area for such an amazing six years,” Boehr said, “It’s been such a lovely community to end my career in.”

Jean was born on July 9, 1924 to Wendell and Flora Landells in Islay, Alberta. She was the middle child of seven. Along with her siblings, she attended Bridstow School. Growing up on the farm, Jean loved rural life and often spent time with her dad as he trained and worked with his Percheron draft horse stock. Jean loved to ride and had a favorite saddlehorse named Shamrock, which she helped her dad break. On November 26, 1947, at Holy Name Parish in Vermilion, Jean married a local farm boy, Henry (Harry) Joseph Butler, who took over his family farm along the river north east of Vermilion. As their children, Gloria, Lyle and Gwen, reached school age, they relocated to the Allendale District. Here they joined in community events such as ball tournaments, skating parties, card parties, Christmas parties and potlucks at the community halls. Jean loved to sew and was soon sewing for neighbours as well as her own family. Her artistic talents also included writing poetry, painting, drawing, needle point, knitting, crocheting, and making diamond willow lamp stands. Jean loved gardening and berry picking made necessary by a growing family. Her pantry was always full of homemade soups, jams, pickles and jellies. Arriving home on the bus, her children could smell the aroma of fresh baked buns, pies or pastries which sent them dashing to the kitchen. Jean had every range cow on the farm named, including a favourite milk cow, Shiny, who would come to the house when she needed to be milked. Turkeys on the other hand, were not Jean’s favourite.

With her family grown, Jean began working in Vermilion, first at Robinson’s Store and later in the butcher shop at the Co-op. Her love of being with people made these years truly enjoyable for Jean. She loved the camaraderie and playful bantering each workplace offered. It also marked the beginning of a succession of new vehicles, driving being one of her true passions.

In their retirement years, Jean and Harry travelled much of Western Canada which often included many of the fairs and rodeos as Harry loved to play horseshoes. During this time, Jean also frequented the Farmers Markets where she sold many sewing and knitting crafts as well as baking. Grandma Jean and Grandpa loved spending time with their grandson, Lee who lived close. After the loss of her husband, Harry, on November 7, 1999, Jean moved to Rimbey to be closer to the mountains and her daughter, Gwen, and her family. She has enjoyed many family gatherings with her own children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. GiGi’s house was where the grandchildren enjoyed buns and chocolate cake while the great grandchildren could always count on a cookie! Jean also enjoyed getting to know many good folks in Rimbey as she frequented the local Farmers Market, dances, courses, exercises, walking trail, floor curling and other events at the Seniors Drop-in Center. Jean was an avid reader and often exchanged books, jokes and stories with friends. Jean was a very compassionate intuitive person who was an attentive listener. She understood people and cared about them deeply.

Her curious nature kept her learning new things, and her witty sense of humour was with her to the end. Jean, Mom, Grandma Jean, Gigi will be sorely missed.

Jean is survived by her sisters Mildred Umbarger from Surrey B.C. and Nellie Pettit, her loving children, Sr. Gloria Butler from Peru, Lyle (Lynn Butler) from Vermilion and Gwen (Olsen) from Rimbey, grandchildren Lee Butler, Rebecca Olsen, Megan (Brad Reis) and Einar (Jocelyn Olsen), great grandchildren Lilly, Dax, Mathias, Everitt, Hazell, and Thorsten as well as several nieces, nephews, great nephews and a great niece.

Jean is predeceased by her loving husband, Henry (Harry) Joseph Butler, parents Wendell and Flora Landells, brothers Jack and George, and sisters Alice (Cambridge) and Edith (Lees).

Due to Covid restrictions, we will be waiting until summer of 2021 for the family to have a celebration of Jean’s life and interment of ashes at the Islay Community Cemetery.

Special thanks to the hospital staff at Rimbey Hospital and the Home Care Aids and staff from FCSS who were exceptionally supportive these past months.

Getting ready for Christmas is going to be very different this year. It is hard to know if family will be able to gather, and if only ten people are allowed, how do you navigate a schedule? While I wonder how that will play out, I am also concerned about Christmas shopping.

Amazon is doing just fine with their billions of dollars of profit. They do not need my money during this extremely difficult season in Canada. There are many local crafters and artisans that are offering unique gifts, and supporting them is another way to give back to your community. With many people unemployed, and doing small businesses ventures to make ends meet, nothing could be more in keeping with the Christmas Spirit than supporting someone in this situation. We are in a silent war that has been waged against Since 1969 our economy and our small community businesses. It is vitally important to support

them, so that we can keep them. You may be surprised to know that many times a small business has a better price than Amazon or a big foreign owned box store. That is because they do not spend hundreds of thousands of dollars weekly on marketing, so local businesses are able to pass savings onto their customer. Studies show that when you support your own local businesses the money is recirculated many times over in your own local community. When you support foreign owned box stores, and foreign owned online shopping, the money has left your community forever.

In the spirit of Christmas, I want to share with you an easy Confetti Square recipe that can be made ahead and even frozen.

You can also do a Chocolate Confetti square, by omitting the butterscotch chips and using chocolate chips instead. There

are even white chocolate chips that you can use instead of the butterscotch chips, and you can use white coconut oil instead of the peanut butter, for a lovely white confetti square that would be perfect for a bridal shower, when we are once again allowed to gather.

Confetti Squares 1/4 cup butter 1/2 cup peanut or almond butter 1 6-ounce package of butterscotch baking chips 1 bag of multi colored mini marshmallows In a heavy bottomed pot, low heat, melt the butter, nut butter and baking chips, stirring until smooth. Allow to cool slightly, and then stir in the marshmallows, and pour into a buttered or lined 8 x 8 inch or 9 x 9-inch square pan. Chill before slicing.

Near Mannville, you will find a community hall that has a long history going back over 100 years. It was in the early 1900s when a post office was erected at Chailey and was operated by C.H. Brown who had come to the area from Sussex. One year later, the St. Alban’s Anglican Chailey Church was built on the land donated

by Percy Richards. By 1910, the population of the area was growing to the point where a school district needed to be built. L.C. Minard was chosen as the chair of the new district while Reverend

Chailey School

Webb became the secretary-treasurer.

A quarter section of land was bought from the CPR for $20 and work began in getting a school built. The school was built as a wood-frame school that measured 18 x 24 feet under the direction of C.H. Croft.

By the end of August, the school was completed and it was ready for students to start attending. H.C. Jackson out of Fort Saskatchewan was hired as the first teacher at a salary of $50 to each the students from grade one to eight.

The local mill rate to pay for the school fees was 6.5 cents on the tax dollar.

The Chailey School would operate as a social center for the entire area.

It was not just school events that were

held at the school. There were political rallies and the religious services of the Methodist congregation were held there. The school would be expanded

by C.H. Croft in 1922 to provide for a playground area and an increase in students. More improvements would come over the years including a teacherage in 1947.

In 1953, the school would officially close and the children would be bused elsewhere but that was not the end of the building. It would eventually be acquired by the community in 1955 and became a community hall.

In addition to its role in education, the school is one of the oldest standing rural schools in the province and it

was a standard bearer of British culture when in 1939, children from the school were bused into Edmonton to see King George and Queen Elizabeth visit the city.

On Aug. 8, 2000, the school was made a Provincial Registered Historic Resource.

Letter To The Editor

Dear Sirs, Lord, I am tired of this COVID thing!! I am also tired of Trudeau and His fear mongering Dr. Theresa Tam on television. There is no news anymore, just COVID crap. At first, Dr. Theresa Tam said don’t wear masks. Now she has done a three-sixty and said everybody wear masks. Hard to have any credibility when you change your story like that.

Now the cases of COVID are spiking up in Alberta, up to 1500 cases per day. 80 per cent of the cases are of an unknown origin. Okay, I get the people to people spread but

common sense tells me that there are way too many new cases for just be that. There has to be a second cause of infection!!! Is it in your corn flakes or drinking water or sushi wine or whatever? I don’t know!!!

Someone is testing the sewage coming out of Edmonton and they have COVID in that. Strikes me that testing sewage is like locking the barn door after the horses have escaped.

They are testing the wrong end. Better get out there and test what we are eating. Look for another cause of infection.

Alberta Government Imposes Restrictions

Premier Jason Kenney addressed the province regarding the steep rise in COVID-19 cases on November 24. He also declared a state of public health emergency and imposed some province-wide restrictions as well as extra restrictions for areas of the province with enhanced status.

“Today Alberta’s government is announcing bold and targeted new measures to protect both lives and livelihoods by limiting the spread of COVID-19. This pandemic is a once-in-a-century public health challenge and it has impacted every one of us in many different ways,” said Kenney during the announcement.

He went on to say that he has received heartbreaking and heartfelt letters and emails from thousands of Albertans in recent days and gave examples of such emails during his speech including, a letter from a grieving family member who had lost a loved one from COVID-19, a business owner who is worried that if another shut down happens she will lose her business. A letter from a grieving widow whose husband had taken his own life due to the extreme stress and uncertainty and loss back in the spring, etc.

“I read out some of these letters to my colleagues during yesterdays extremely challenging eight-hour-long meeting of the COVID Cabinet Committee, and I did so to remind myself and all of us who carry the burden of leadership at this time of the profound human impact of this crisis and of our decisions,” Kenney said.

Kenney went on to explain why the new measures and restrictions had to be put in place.

“We have to protect our vulnerable, these are our grandparents, our parents, our aunts, and uncles, our friends and mentors, these are people who built our province!!

We need to do everything we can to protect them and remain safe...

Here is today’s urgent reality! If we do not slow the sharp rise of both hospitalizations and ICU admissions they will threaten our ability to continue delivering health services that we all rely on, and it has already started,” explained Kenney.

Kenney went on to say that as cases continue to rise other surgeries and services will have to be put on hold to make sure there are hospital beds and staff are available to care for COVID and all critically ill patients.

“We have 8400 acute care beds, and we are working night and day to increase capacity for the current and expected COVID surge; but as we increase that capacity, it comes as a real cost. A cost to people’s health and I fear a cost of people’s lives. If we do not take the right measures a growing number of Albertans will have to wait longer and longer for important surgery, many of them in pain and suffering,” explained Kenney.

Kenney also reminded people that these steps are not being taken lightly and reiterated that he did not go into public service to impose restrictions on how people live their lives and that they believe these are the minimum restrictions that can put in place to safeguard the health care system while avoiding widespread damage to people’s livelihoods and says that social gatherings are the main cause of spread.

“The first set of restrictions will target social gatherings throughout the province. Let me be absolutely clear about this, social gatherings are the largest problem... many people think that family gathering or dinner with friends is no big deal...it’s just normal, but it is the key reason why COVID-19 is winning, these gatherings are the largest source of transmission and that is why they must stop now! Effective immediately no indoor social gathering will be permitted and outdoor social gatherings are limited to 10,” Kenney stated with firmness.

PUBLIC SALE OF LAND

In regards to indoor gatherings, there are some exceptions, such as, people who live alone can have the same two nonhousehold contacts, service visits from caregivers, health or child care providers and co-parenting arrangements. Support group meetings aren’t considered social gatherings but must follow public health measures and limit attendance.

The outdoor gathering of 10 restriction also states that movement in and out of homes aren’t permitted at backyard gatherings, so there is no going inside to use the washroom, to gather snacks, or to warm up. If you are having an outdoor gathering everyone must remain outdoors and everyone must remain distanced and follow public health measures.

Festivals and events are prohibited both inside and outdoors.

Weddings and funerals have been limited to a maximum of 10 and receptions are not permitted province-wide.

“I know this is a terrible sacrifice for many... I know for those grieving this a particular sacrifice to make but we have learned here and around the world that weddings and funerals given their intimate and emotional nature are some of the largest causes for widespread transmission,” stated Kenney.

The restrictions on places of worship and mask restrictions are currently only applied to areas with the enhanced status for three weeks and will be re-evaluated.

There is a province-wide restriction for the schooling of grades 7-12 and schooling will be moved to at-home learning starting November 30 until January 8 with in-person classes resuming on Jan 11.

Diploma exams are optional for the rest of the school year. Students and families can choose to write an exam or receive an exemption for the January, April, June and August 2021 exams. Grades K-6 students (including Early Childhood Services) continue in-person learning until their scheduled winter break, move to at-home

The archery Club formally started in 1984 as a bowhunting club, but over the years, it became specifically the Archery Club with the addition of new members who do archery for recreation rather than for sport.

Depending on the year, the Archery club has had approximately 40 -70 members of all ages starting at about five years old. The club meets each Monday and have different time slots for each age group (children, teens, and adults). Enacting COVID-19 protocol is rather simple for the Archery Club, as

participants typically shoot spaced out from others. Masks are only mandatory for those instructing youth in the club, and mask wearing for others remains optional.

While the club shoots indoor for the winter months, they also have an outdoor range for the spring.

Unfortunately, the club had its last meet of the year on November 23, as they predicted new COVID-19 measures would prevent them from meeting. They hope to restart the club on January 4.

Partnership Provides Students With Beyond The Classroom Business Opportunities

(Lloydminster, Alta.) Lakeland College is providing new opportunities for business administration students to collaborate on industry projects and gain valuable work experience thanks to its partnership with Riipen and RBC Future Launch.

Riipen – an online work-integrated learning platform – connects students with industry partners and brings real projects into their online classroom. These projects are embedded into the curriculum, allowing students to develop the skills they need to excel in their future careers, which aligns with Lakeland’s belief that students learn best through action.

“We are excited that we have found amazing workintegrated opportunities through Riipen to work with Canadian and international companies on innovative projects,” says Ben Acquaye, School of Business chair. “This will enhance student resumes and employability, and allow our students to show leadership on an international scale.”

Business administration diploma students taking E-commerce this semester are using the platform to complete projects for businesses from St. Albert, Alta., and California. Students will present their work, which ties into their coursework, to both their instructor and a representative from the selected business.

“Riipen is a great opportunity to have a real working experience with a business on many levels. It’s a chance to introduce yourself as a professional, improve your interpersonal abilities and understand businesses in real time,” says Fernanda Martinelli, a second-year business administration student in the general business major. “This also gave us a taste of real job experience.”

Martinelli and her peers have been working with Renovate Organics, from St. Albert, which offers custom soaps, shampoos and conditioners, as well as bodyworks services. As the COVID-19 pandemic remains a prevalent part of day-to-day life, the owners of business sought to improve their online and 3”the wide version social media presence, and turned to Riipen. “ Working with Riipen has allowed me to learn more about how local businesses work and their culture,” says Martinelli. “We put our technical knowledge from class to work, but that’s not the only skill. Working as a team to find the best way for a business to succeed, we had many points of view and strategies to consider, which is why communication and organization are essential skills. We were able to network together and benefit from our instructor’s guidance.”

The partnership with Lakeland and 15 other post-secondary institutions in Canada is part of Phase II of Riipen’s initiative with RBC Future Launch. In the second part of the initiative, Lake-

land’s E-commerce students are among 6,000 students who will benefit from collaborating with businesses through this platform, joining the more than 5,400 students who participated in Phase I. “By partnering with real businesses on real problems, our students have the opportunity to develop critical skills in leadership, problem solving and collaboration. These projects 3” wide version will have an immediate impact on their confidence and self-awareness that will benefit them beyond the classroom,” says Acquaye, noting Riipen may be integrated into additional business courses and other Lakeland programs next semester.

Vermilion Hold Reverse Christmas Parade

T h e Ve r m i l i o n C h a m b e r h o s te d the Vermilion Night Light Stationary Parade on November 27, instead of a traditional parade due to COVID. The parade floats from local busi-

nesses and organizations were assembled on the south side of Railway avenue at 7 p.m. and hundreds of attendees traveled west to east in their vehicles to view.

Due to COVID rules and regulations, float participants were asked to

remain by their float or in their vehicle and they were not allowed to pass out candy.

The first 150 vehicles to view the parade were also provided the opportunity to receive a candy gift bag as well as a bag from the Western Insti-

tute of Emergency Education once they finished viewing the parade floats.

“We would like to thank the Cornerstone Co-op for their generous donation of candy for the parade,” stated a post on the Vermilion Alberta Chamber Facebook page.

Karen Harris Wins Gold International Award For Student Support Services

The most popular tool Harris uses to destress students and get them in the right mindset for learning is poi balls. The poi ball routine she uses addresses a condition known as homolateral repatterning. The routine gets the right and left hemispheres of the brain working more seamlessly together, says Diachuk, resulting in improved focus and concentration.

Harris has worked with almost 1,000 Lakeland students in individual and group sessions since becoming the college’s learner success strategist in 2017.

Students who’ve benefitted from her help often tell others to connect with her. It’s very common for new students to reach out to her when they arrive at Lakeland because their sibling or friend told them to contact her.

“I love working with students and helping them identify who they are as learners.

Learning is very instinctual for each person.

By knowing more about ourselves and how we react to situations, not only does learning become easier, so too does life,” says Harris,

Finding innovative ways to help students become better learners has earned Karen Harris a 2020 Gold Award of Excellence from the World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics (WFCP).

Harris, the learner success strategist at Lakeland College, won gold in the Student Support Services category earlier today (Nov. 27) during the WFCP’s online awards ceremony. The category celebrates excellence in provision of services that support students throughout their college experience.

“Karen’s work with students is renowned throughout Lakeland. Rather than a cookiecutter approach, she pulls from her extensive tool kit of strategies and techniques to meet the needs of students and help them succeed,” says Dr. Alice Wainwright-Stewart, president and CEO of Lakeland College.

“I’m very proud of Karen and all she’s done for our students and thrilled that her contributions are being recognized by the WFCP.” Other finalists in the Student Support Services category were from institutions in China and the United Kingdom.

Michael Diachuk, chair of Teaching and Learning at Lakeland, nominated Harris for the award. He was delighted, but not surprised, that Harris was selected as the gold award recipient.

“I’m so impressed with the difference Karen makes in the lives of our students.

Each student has a unique learning pattern, and through discussions and observations, she’s able to determine the person’s sensory style, learning style and personality type. She processes that information and then creates an individualized strategy to enhance their learning. That she’s often able to do this during one session is truly remarkable,” says Diachuk.

During the online ceremony, recipients were recognized in eight categories, based on the international value of the award-winning institutions, individuals, and programs, as well as their achievements, benefits to students, and innovation.

WFCP received 113 award nominations from across the world. Of the finalists, only four were from Canada. Harris was Canada’s lone gold recipient.

Unwrapping Red Tape On Christmas

Albertans can now get their own Christmas trees and firewood from Crown land for free!

The holiday season is here and families across Alberta are looking forward to the time-honoured tradition of visiting their local forests to gather firewood and to cut down their own Christmas tree.

But this year, things are going to be a little different.

During the 2019 election, we promised to cut red tape and we have done exactly that. In fact, in our first update, the government announced that we have cut red tape by more than 6 per cent.

This year, we are unwrapping the red tape around harvesting Christmas trees and firewood.

Albertans can now enjoy this fun family tradition with their families for free. We’ve eliminated the $5 cost for the permit, saving Albertans $100,000 a year in unnecessary fees.

Alberta’s 87 million acres of forest belong

to us all, and spending time with family while picking the perfect Christmas tree is an important part of our province’s culture.

That’s why we’re making it easier for Albertans to enjoy it.

For those that are considering this for the first time this year, your Personal Use Forest Products Permit is valid for 30 days and allows you to harvest up to: three Christmas trees; five cubic metres of firewood (approximately 3 full regular truck beds); five cubic metres of round wood (often used for fence posts and rails); or 20 tree transplants.

With these changes, you’ll still need a permit to harvest Crown timber for personal use. If you’re caught without a permit or reselling Crown timber, you could face a fine, and possibly end up on Santa’s naughty list.

You can get your permit online or at your local forest area office. After accepting the terms and conditions, you’ll receive a map that shows you exactly where you can harvest Crown timber.

Amid a general rise in fraud and cybercrimes associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, RBC Direct Investing offers a few simple guidelines to help you stay safe.

Be aware of unsolicited calls, emails and texts Emails or texts can sometimes appear to be from a legitimate source, but contain infected attachments or malicious links.

Don’t enter login information or credit card details unless you are certain a site is legitimate.

Use strong, unique passwords Strong passwords can help ensure you’re protecting your devices and information. Avoid using the same password for multiple applications or services, and don’t opt for obvious passwords like family or pet names, birthdays and street names.

Tips: Use a combination of letters, numbers and special characters with a minimum of eight characters, change passwords regularly and create a new password for every application or service

you use.

Keep software and browsers up to date The operating systems on your devices have built-in security features, but they need to be kept up to date to help avoid breaches of your personal information. The browser you use to search the internet also has its own security settings and requires updating. Though they may be bothersome, don’t ignore prompts to update your operating system or browser.

Tip: Consider enabling automatic updates or try setting a reminder to update your device when you won’t be using it.

Buffalo Trail Public Schools News Release – Mid November Update

We are proud to share that BTPS won a Canadian Schools of the Future Spirit Award from Mindshare Schools. In February 2020, BTPS partnered with Hapara to begin a collaborative project referred to as Sharing is Caring. The project began by encouraging educators in BTPS to share their personally created Workspaces publicly with other educators from across Alberta. Sharing is Caring evolved quickly, extending to include the alignment of public Workspace content from around the world with Alberta’s curriculum standards.

From there, a dedicated team of educators from BTPS and Horizon school division began the process of creating curated resources ranging from Grade K-12, accessible to all Alberta teachers using Hapara Workspace. This award is kudos to the hard work, dedication, and sharing culture evident throughout Buffalo Trail Public Schools.

We hosted our annual BTPS Bus Safety Poster Contest. This year’s theme was My Driver, My Hero. We had posters from artists in all of our elementary schools.

BTPS is very appreciative of the work that our bus drivers are doing to bring our

students to and from school safely. This year there is additional enhanced cleaning between each of the bus runs.

So far this year, COVID-19 individual cases have been identified in three of our schools (EH Walter, Mannville, Wainwright High School). As with any person diagnosed with illness, our thoughts are with them and we wish them a safe and speedy recovery. BTPS has been proactive in starting our isolation processes after parents have informed us that their student had tested positive for COVID-19. When we get this information, we immediately contact AHS and they have been supportive of us following our procedures immediately until they are able to get confirmation and start their own contact tracing.

We thank parents/guardians for completing the daily AHS checklist and keeping students home when they are sick.

Our facilities team and custodians have done a great job making our schools a safe place for staff and students during the pandemic. Since March 15, our custodians have been focused on enhanced cleaning in our facilities. We use the twowipe disinfection process on all high touch surfaces. Custodial staff are disinfecting all high touch surfaces in the entrances, halls

and common areas including all washrooms at least three times per day, as well as in the evening before school resumes the next day. We have purchased electrostatic cleaning units for a third step in disinfecting. Hand sanitizer is available at all entrances and in classrooms.

We have also adjusted our shifts to

include more daytime hours while students are in the building. When there is a positive COVID-19 case within a school there are additional enhanced cleaning measures that take place. BTPS is grateful to have such a dedicated facilities team and custodians keeping our students and staff safe and buildings clean.

Mr. & Mrs. Moir worked tirelessly to provide each classroom with a tree that was set up and ready to be decorated. We feel very blessed and greatly appreciate the gift of their time and effort each year at Christmas. St. Jerome’s students and their families were also incredibly generous this year, with their donations of Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes. This project, headed up by the FIAT (Faith in Action Team) and VIBE, managed to collect 79 Christmas shoeboxes to send to children in need around the world.

This 40-minute presentation was geared toward reinforcing positive behavior, developing character education and building a growth mindset for students.

NED stands for: Never give up, Encourage others, and Do your best. Some magic components and terrific yo-yoing skills thoroughly captivated the students.

This past Friday’s STEAM challenge was to build the slowest falling snowflake. Fridays are FriYAY in Grade 6.

Grade 1 students had so much fun making “Calm Jars’ with our VIBE coach, Ramona. The students talked about working through emotions and how to calm their minds. Then they took water bottles and filled them with glitter, glue and water. After the lids were glued shut, the students could shake their bottled to calm themselves.

Creative Kids Club is a lunch hour club for Grade 6 students at VES this year.

It offers students the opportunity to try different ways of expressing themselves through the arts. About 25 students are

Buffalo Trail Public Schools News Release - November Update

On November 24, 2020, the government announced new measures to help minimize the spread of COVID-19. For Buffalo Trail Public Schools, that means students in Grades 7 -12 will move to at-home learning Monday, November 30

- December 18, 2020; students in ECS to Grade 6 will continue learning at school in-person until December 18, 2020. From January 4 - 8th, 2021 all ECS to Grade 12 students will be learning at-home and will return to at school in-person learning (Scenario 1) on January 11, 2021. As well, Diploma Exams for the remainder of the

2020-21 school year will be optional. The decision to write diploma exams resides with students and their families. Students will receive an exemption if they choose not to write an exam, however if an exam is written it will continue to be worth 30% of their final mark.

Schools are preparing to support our

students with these transitions. Parents will be receiving communication from their student’s teachers and schools to provide additional information on what the expectations are for at home learning. BTPS staff did amazing at-home learning in the spring and are prepared for these transitions at this time.

Whether a winter feed system uses a silage bunk or pit, baled forage, or swath grazing, significant feed waste losses can happen. Spoilage, mould, trampling, and weather are just a few examples of how losses can occur.

In addition to the expense of the feed lost, cow-calf operations can experience significant reproductive losses from spoiled or low-quality feed such as cows failing to rebreed the following breeding

season and poor calf performance.

Feed testing can be the first step toward using stored feed efficiently. Once a plan is in place based on the feed test results, optimizing the consumption of the feed by limiting spoilage and wastage is a logical next step.

How to Limit Silage Waste Reducing waste in silage starts in the field says Les Halliday, PhD, Beef Specialist at PEI Department of Agriculture and Land. Here are Les’ top tips to reduce silage waste: • Use balers with knives. Les says coarse chopping allows for tighter packing of the forage in the bale resulting in less air and 10 -15% higher density which means less bales to wrap. Chopped grass in baled silage

will also undergo a faster, more efficient fermentation than in regular baled silage. At feed out, cattle are able to access chopped silage more easily resulting in higher intake and less waste, however, Les cautions that if bales are too tight it can hinder cattle from physically eating the forage, and cause them to tire out.

When wrapping silage bales in rows, ensure bales are consistent in size and shape. Wrapping bales that are the same size will reduce large air pockets that can form when bales are not consistent. He also strongly suggests, “if you’re going to try to cut your costs anywhere, don’t let it be your plastic.” The plastic wrap around silage bales creates a barrier from oxygen that is critical for

good silage production. Without proper coverage, even a tiny hole (such as from rodents or barn cats) can lead to spoilage from mould.

• If storing chopped silage in a bunker system, packing density and a tight air seal is key. Les says higher packing density can be accomplished using a silage compaction roller which can increase packing density by as much as an additional 2 pounds of dry matter per cubic foot.

Maintaining a smooth bunk face can reduce additional losses. Double seal bunks or use oxygen barriers. Double sealing or oxygen barrier plastic have shown positive results to reduce spoilage in bunks.

An uneven bunk face, caused by feed removal, can result in a significant amount of air (oxygen) infiltration which wakes up the microbes that begin to use up nutrients (sugars, silage acids, and proteins) which leads to the production of carbon dioxide, ammonia and other gases. This can also lead to the growth of moulds, yeasts and certain pathogenic bacteria.

How to Reduce Waste in Dry Hay According to Duane McCartney, a retired forage-beef systems research scientist at Lacombe, AB, limiting waste in dry hay also starts in the field.

• When cutting hay, set your mower on the widest setting. This will enable shorter

drying time, lower respiration losses, higher sugar content, and more digestible energy. It also improves fermentation and reduces the likelihood of rain damage.

• When storing bales, arrange them to allow sufficient air flow. Where the bales touch, moisture can accumulate which can lead to spoilage losses. Duane also suggests that bales are stored in a welldrained area.

• Assess any leftover hay and straw bales that may need to be rearranged to ensure there is adequate air space around all the bales. Otherwise the summer rain will creep into the bales and spoilage will result.

• When feeding forages in round bale feeders, ensure each cow has enough

space at the feeder to reduce competition and minimize trampled feed. Duane says he has observed the least waste in tapered cone style round bale feeders.

Avoid feeding stored forages directly on the ground if possible. Whether it is chopped silage or round bales rolled onto snow, feed losses can range from 23-26%.

Duane suggests a portable feed bunk can be a better option to reduce wasted feed.

• Swath grazing can be an effective method of feeding cattle; however, it requires planning to minimize feed waste. Duane suggests cattle be fenced into a small section that can be cleaned up ideally within three days. Not fencing off sections for swath grazing can result in an unbalanced diet and risk of acidosis. The accessibility of the swaths

for the cattle may also need to be addressed. To open up areas in times of heavy snow, a tractor may be driven down the swath or a blade used to move snow off the swath. It is also important to provide adequate shelter, either through natural shelter or portable windbreaks, to prevent cattle from bedding down in the feed.

Regardless of the style of winter feeding, continually working to reduce feed waste and minimize the loss of nutrients protects your farm’s large investment in stored forage.

Vermilion RCMP Welcomes New Member

The Vermilion RCMP acquired a new member for their detachment on September 14.

Constable Olivia Skillings graduated Depot on September 7 and is originally from a rural community just outside Woodstock, Ontario. Skillings career path began when she was in high school and really enjoyed law class.

“When trying to decide what career I wanted to pursue, I decided to take a two year Community and Justice Services program. This program taught me about the Criminal Justice system as a whole, covering topics such as, victim services, policing, corrections, as well as many others. During that program I realized that I enjoyed the diverse working environment policing provides.” explained Skillings.

Once Skillings completed her program she decided to also obtain a degree that would make her a more competitive applicant for the RCMP. She enrolled in the Honours Criminal Justice degree program at Nipissing University which focused more exclusively on policing and took three years to complete.

“In June of 2019 I graduated from Nipissing University and the following month I received my troop number and arrival date to Depot,” said Skillings.

During her time away from schooling in the summer months Skillings worked for the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority as a Park Operation Technician.

“My job consisted of motoring watercrafts on the reservoir, operating dam gates and overseeing the security staff.” said Skillings.

When Skillings was informed that her posting would be in Vermilion she investigated Vermilion to discover what was in store for her as she had never been to Alberta prior to joining the RCMP. She was happy to discover she was being posted in a familiar environment as her own hometown.

“Once I found out I was posted in Vermilion, Alberta I honestly had no idea where I was going. I immediately went to my troop mates and Google to figure out

where I was headed,” stated Skillings.

Since arriving in Vermilion she has had the opportunity to attend a vast array of calls and states that she had a steep learning curve at the detachment and is appreciative for all the support she has received from the other members. She also said that the community has been supportive.

“I am grateful for the community

support and their response to my arrival.

Whether I am chatting with community members at the market, or they give me a wave while passing by, the support has been remarkable,” explained Skillings.

During her down time Constable Skillings enjoys the outdoors, running, baking and catching up with her friends and family. She also loves dogs and is hoping to get one in the near future.
