On November 3, the Town Council held a regular meeting, in which major changes for the Vermilion RCMP was discussed, as well as Vermilion & District Housing Foundation updates, funding, and more.

The meeting began with an oath of office for Councillor Clint McCullough for his role as Deputy Mayor. The Council then moved onto schedule dates for regular Town Council meetings for the remainder of 2020 and 2021. Regular meetings will be held every second Tuesday for the remainder of 2020 ending on December 15. In 2021, regular meetings will continue every second Tuesday starting on January 5.

Some adjustments are being made for the Vermilion & District Housing Foundation, as the foundation has recently taken over manors in Wainwright, Irma, Dewberry, and Chauvin. Seniors manors in Wainwright were previously managed by the Lions Club, however, the club is dissolving as there are no longer enough members. This left the manors without management, and the Vermilion & District Housing Foundation was approached by the government to take on the units. As a result, the housing foundation is looking for a new board member to represent the Wainwright area. The takeover will take place in the new year.

CAO George Rogers and Economic Development Officer Mary Lee Prior met with K-division to discuss possible locations for another small RCMP detachment in Vermilion. There were many parameters set by K-division to consider, however, they successfully determined a suitable area for the detachment.

“It was agreed that the site that best suited the needs of the RCMP is a four-lot area within the Junction 16 and 41 development,” commented CAO George Rogers.

An offer was made by the Minister of Public Works and Government Services

which was a 90 day purchase of three lots in the Junction 16 and 41 area for $1.1 million. The transaction would close on the February 15, 2021, and construction would take approximately two years.

“The earliest would be sometime towards the end of 2022,” said CAO Rogers.

The movement was made by Councillor Justin Thompson to accept the Option to Purchase offer, which was carried.

“This will solidify RCMP presence in our community, which is crucial,” commented Mayor Caroline McAuley, “so I think this is a great move.”

RCMP statistics for the Vermilion Area were presented by Corporal Mike Dunsmore, who also commented on the shift in staffing the Vermilion detachment is currently undergoing.

The Vermilion RCMP is currently fully staffed, however will have some changes with the retirement of Sergeant Jane Boehr.

“This will bring to a conclusion 32 years of service for Sergeant Boehr,” mentioned Dunsmore.

Boehr will be working into the new year, retiring in the second week of January. A competition for RCMP members to apply for the position will be closing on November 11. Until the new Sergeant is named, Dunsmore will be filling the role.

Mayor McAuley reported to Dunsmore of an instance of theft in a local business down main street. She suggested that the RCMP do a stroll down main street to build connections and security for local businesses, “Just to remind them that reporting these instances is important,” she said.

“Feedback from the business community in one way or another is really quite invaluable,” Dunsmore responded, “that’s something you will probably see in the future.”

Dunsmore hopes to be more involved in the business community while he is acting in Boehr’s capacity as sergeant, and if he

is successful in attaining the permanent position as sergeant.

A motion was put forward by Director of Finance and Administration Brian Liebel to continue to use Bellamy Software for financial transactions, which the town is under a one year license to expire on December 31 of this year. The motion was carried for the license to be renewed for a three year contract.

The Town’s capital budget for computer printers in 2019 was $46,000, of which the Town has currently used $25,000. A proposal was made for a scope change, to use the capital budget for office technology, such as security systems, and other technology that would be useful for mitigating the difficulties COVID-19 has brought to meetings and networking. This scope change may also be supported by $21,000 from the Municipal Operating Support Transfer (MOST) grant, which the town is waiting to hear more details about.

The motion was carried to include other office technology in the computer printer budget, with the remainder of the fund going towards administration equipment and furnishing reserve.

Community Services Director Kevin Lucas reported that minor hockey in Vermilion will not start until January due to COVID-19. All current users of the arena and other ice facilities are being accommodated. After further discussing ice times, Lucas made an acknowledgement to ice movers; “I would just like to say the year would be as successful as it has been without the cooperation of the ice movers,” Lucas said.

An update on the Vermilion & District Housing Foundation was presented by Mayor McAuley. The Housing Foundation is still working on getting Senior Level 4 care in Vermilion, and the Mayor will be meeting with the Minister of Public Health to discuss the matter. Mayor McAuley also mentioned a recent power outage at the lodge, in which they discovered that the backup generator was doing minimal work and was not hooked up to the life call system, which is crucial for the care of residents. As reported by Mayor McAuley, the Vermilion & District Housing Foundation will be working on updating the backup generator to include the life call system, which will likely be an approximately $250,000 fix.

“It’s a safety issue and we need to be moving forward with it,” said Mayor McAuley.

Round table discussions started with a congratulatory acknowledgement by Councillor Richard Yaceyko to Councillor Thompson as he recently attained a new role as an executive chair at the library.

Councillor McCullough provided an update for a major break in pipes in Marwayne under Highway 897.

“We’ve got great people looking after it, but we’ve been trucking water since Saturday,” Councillor McCullough reported.

MLA Rowswell plans on making a member statement in Legislature regarding V-net.

“We’re looking forward to see what will be presented in legislature,” Councillor Pulyk said.

Councillor Pulyk also had a Community Futures update. Round 2 of the Regional Relief and Recovery Fund (RRRF) for businesses was announced in October.

Businesses that did not previously quality for RRRF or Canada Emergency Businesses Account (CEBA) can apply to Community Futures. Community Futures is giving loans of up to $40,000 for those who qualify, and businesses can apply on AlbertaCF.com.

Community Futures has various projects on the go, including the Project Gazelle program for women entrepreneurs. CF also plans on setting up a town coffee shop in Vermilion.

CF works with Vermilion’s Chamber of Commerce on business recovery by being a part of a local holiday initiative, which will be detailed further later in the year.

Pulyk reminded Mayor and Council that the Good Life Institute will be facilitating it’s annual SAVOUR event on November 20 and 21. The event will have 75 seats for each night, strictly following COVID-19 guidelines.

“Tickets are selling very well,” Pulyk commented.

Councillor Thompson provided a brief update about his week, acknowledging his new role as executive chair of the library, as well as his new involvement in the Parks and Recreation committee, in which he was sworn in on November 2. Thompson also thanked Mayor McAuley and Economic Development Officer Mary Lee Prior for their attendance of the Kneaded Relief and Northern Lights Realty Grand Reopening.

Mayor McAuley concluded round table discussions with her own report, reminding the council of the Remembrance Day Ceremony, which will be a limited event this year. McAuley also mentioned new administration at the Vermilion Chamber of Commerce, including new chamber President Kory Kralkay, Vice President Alice Skolarchuk, and Secretary Treasurer Janine Lange. She also met with new county reeve Lonnie Wolgien.

Mayor McAuley mentioned her attendance at a Women in Politics session with a senator from Calgary and a local MLA Minister.

“We are still underrepresented at the municipal level,” McAuley stated.

Lastly, Mayor McAuley thanked the town for the lack of COVID-19 cases in the county, and mentioned that residents at the lodge have been able to experience more freedom as a result of the lack of cases.

“Hopefully, we can stay safe for them,” McAuley commented.

Meeting In Dewberry Discusses Democratic Equality And Independence

A meeting was held in Dewberry on October 28 to discuss Alberta’s role and representation in Ottawa.

“It’s with resolve and without malice that we move forward to build a country that reflects the values of Albertans,” it stated in a pamphlet given out at the event.

volleyball. Due to COVID-19 precautions, cross- countr y running was cancelled this fall, rowing only trained and are looking at virtual competitions in the winter semester. The Canadian Intercollegiate Rodeo Association suspended fall rodeo competition, however, Lakeland’s rodeo studentathletes continue to train on campus.

The ACAC previously decided to cancel the fall 2020 season of competition.

A Fall Into Hallow

In Derwent, Halloween festivities consisted of goodie bags, a maze, and an art gallery, all held at Hardcastle’s Store on October 31.

The event was orchestrated by store owner Gladys Hardcastle, who sought to bring together the community and uplift spirits in the troubling times COVID-19 has brought this year.

“It was a wonderful turnout,” commented Hardcastle.

Contents of goodie bags were provided by community donations, which Hardcastle reports amounted to approximately $700. Goodie bags with candy, toys, and party favours were made for the event and only two remained when the event was over.

Not only did Hardcastle have donors and volunteers help with the setup, but

also had volunteers working in the maze to enhance the experience. They set up the maze and gallery the night previous, and woke up to winds which blew the setup down. Luckily, Hardcastle was able to pull the event back together with the help of the community.

“I sincerely would love to tell the community that without them it wouldn’t have been possible,” Hardcastle stated, “the community really went the extra mile.”

War is the most horrible of all human endeavours and is not to be entered into lightly and only when there is absolutely no other options to be had.

War is not filled with glory! If you were to speak with any of our veterans I am positive they will tell you it is a personal hell on earth. War does not only affect the thousands of men and women who serve it also affects their families and

friends who technically serve back at home. The families of every service member live with the uncertainty of war, they have to live with the possibility of serious injury or death of their loved one.

Remembrance Day is an important day to honour those who serve and continue to serve, but this year due to COVID Remembrance Day may not take on its normal form. Parades, ceremonies, and other events may have to be held differently to allow for social

I love bananas, but I occasionally end up with some that start to overripen before they are eaten. Save this recipe for the perfect banana muffin that has a nice muffin top, rising up and spreading over the pan. Molasses, cinnamon and allspice are unique ingredients in this recipe.

It is what adds that special baker y flavor. These banana muffins are great to enjoy for breakfast, your morning coffee break, to take to work or when you need a little something-something to get you through the day. This muffin recipe makes 12 muffins. As you may already know from my other articles,

oats contain a special fiber called betaglucan, which has been proven to have the beneficial effect of removing cholesterol from the digestive track, before it can enter the blood stream. The oat bran, ground flax seed and cinnamon are great sources of fiber and help to stabilize blood sugar, which may be beneficial for people with diabetes, insulin resistant metabolic syndrome and obesity. I like using unbleached flour instead of white bleached wheat flour because then the immune system in our gut does not have to deal with the b leac hing ag ent s in t he fl our.

Bananas are high in pectin fiber and aid in movement through the digestive system. Bananas are a good source of vitamin B6, vitamin C and potassium.

that the high potassium content found in foods such as bananas help reduce blood pressure and the risk of stroke.

You can enjoy these guilt free treats and reap all their benefits from the nutritious ingredients that are in them, and all the chemical and preservatives that are not in them.

Banana Muffins 1/3 cup melted butter 2 tablespoons canola or light olive oil 1 egg 1/2 cup sugar 2 tablespoons fancy molasses 1/2 cup milk or water 3 ripe or overripe bananas mashed 1 cup unbleached flour 1/2 cup oat bran 1/4 cup ground flax seed 1/2 cup ground oat flour

Line 12 muf fin tins with papers, or grease well. In a mixing bowl add all the dry ingredients including the spices.

In a second bowl mix together the wet ingredients including the mashed banana, eggs, butter, water and stir well. Add the wet ingredient mixture to the dry and stir until just mixed, do not over stir or your muffins will be tough.

Spoon in to muffin tins and finish with a pinch of brown sugar, or raw sugar.

Bake at 400 degrees for 20 - 22 minute or when a toothpick inserted into the middle of the muffin comes out dry.

Those Lost In War From Vermilion

With Remembrance Day nearly upon us, I wanted to go through the several individuals who lost their lives in the wars of the 20th century, who never returned home to the Vermilion area.

Many served and lost their lives in the wars, and I sadly can’t cover all but I tried to cover what I could.

Private William Louis Armstrong was serving with the Canadian Infantry in the Manitoba Regiment in the 78th Battalion when he was killed at the age of 20 on April 9, 1917, the first day of combat during the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

Lance Corporal Dalton Henry Bristow was serving with the Manitoba Regiment in the eighth battalion when he was killed by machine gun fire on Aug. 9, 1918. Born on Jan. 23, 1894, his circumstances of casualty states “this non-commissioned officer was killed during the advance on the afternoon of Aug. 9, 1918. The Battalion advanced in the face of stout

opposition from the enemy who placed a heavy barrage at the jumping off place, and from hidden nests poured machine gun fire into the ranks of the troops who pushed forward.”

Private George John Burton was serving with the First Canadian Mounted Rifles in the Saskatchewan Regiment when he was reported missing on June 2, 1916, which was later changed to killed-in-action. Burton had been born in London, England in 1888 and came to the Vermilion area in 1910. He enlisted with the Canadian Army very early on, serving for two years until his unfortunate death.

Private Wilfrid Entwisle Bur y was also ser ving with the First Canadian Mounted Rifles in the Saskatchewan Regiment when he was killed on Nov. 15, 1917 in the Battle of Passchendaele.

He had received shrapnel to his right knee, fracturing it, along with shrapnel to his hand, head and

abdomen. His right arm was amputated in an attempt to save his life at the No. 10 Casualty Clearing Station but he died of his wounds. Bury had been born in England in 1881 and come to Canada in 1909. He enlisted in 1914 and served in both France and Germany.

Pilot Officer Bernard Horace Cooper was 19-year-old when he served with the Royal Canadian Air Force in the 514th Squadron on a bomber crew. His plane was reported missing on July 21, 1944 and he was listed as killed-in-action.

The aircraft had taken off at 11:13 p.m. carrying several bombs for a three hour 23 minute flight that would take it over

Hamburg, Germany on a bombing raid.

Along with Cooper were six other crew members who were killed.

Private Robert Frank Fane was born on April 30, 1897 in England and would enlist on Jan. 7, 1916 in Vermilion with the Canadian Infantry in the Alberta Regiment. Serving with the 10th Battalion, he would be killed-in-action on Nov. 11, 1917.

Private Samuel Roseborough was 44-years-old when he was serving in France with the Canadian Infantry in the 66th Battalion. He would be killed on July 18, 1917.

History Of Agricultural Societies In Canada

Agriculture societies and their fairs have a long, storied history in Canada. First introduced by early settlers, the concept of the “Agriculture Fair” known then primarily as a “Cattle Shows” quickly gained popularity and flourished across North America.

It was only a mere 300 years after Christopher Columbus inadvertently encountered the New World that the first agricultural society was founded, and subsequent fair was held.

In 1765 the first fair in North America was hosted in Windsor, Nova Scotia. A fair which is now the oldest continuously

run agricultural fair in North America. Fairs of this era served as not only a meeting ground for distant neighbors and spread out communities but also as a welcome distraction from everyday hardships that come with developing a new country.

One such community member, Ernest M. Taylor describes in a letter written to his sister his thoughts on the events of the first Vermilion Fair in 1906 he states, “It was the greatest dissipation I have had in this country, which is not saying a great deal… Altogether the whole outing was very successful.” Fairs have continued to stand the test of time here in Canada. While other exhibitions and festivals came and wwent, fairs carried on, eventually becoming ingrained within the very culture of Canadian life.

In line with Canadian culture, agricultural societies are based on the hard work of volunteers and are not-for-

profit organizations whose purpose is to support improvements in rural living and to provide means to educational opportunities in agriculture. In 1811 agricultural societies took the concept of the cattle show and changed things up. Adding an element of competition and prize money fairs would be forever changed and a new legacy was born.

Today that legacy continues with thousands of fairs across Canada and many more around the world. Fairs and agricultural societies continue to provide communities with fun and excitement, education, and all the best in competition of both agricultural and domestic products. Not to mention the food! Fairs bring us together year after year and if you have never made it to the Vermilion Fair, we look forward to seeing you soon.

Brooker plans on being in Vermilion for approximately three years, before moving onto another cadet corps. Al Deschambault Betty Deschambault Submitted

Al Deschambault was born at Dundee, Quebec. In 1954, when he was 18 years old, he enlisted in the Air Force in Montreal. His basic training was at St. John’s, Quebec. Al chose to be a Crash Rescue and Structure Fire Fighter and instructor working with

young, eager recruits for heavy equipment fire fighting at Borden, Ontario.

Then he was transferred to McDonald, Manitoba; then to Portage La Prairie where he met and married Helen and over the next few years, they had two sons.

Now, with their young family, Al was transferred to One Wing, Marville in France. In 1964, Al’s wife was admitted to a US hospital in Germany where she had their baby girl.

One Wing was closing in 1966. Al refused to move to Four Wing. Soellingen in Germany where they would have to live in a tent until the PMQ Barracks were provided so he was moved back to Canada to Moisey, Quebec.

When they arrived, they found out they had to live in a tent for a few weeks until the married quarters were completed. The children thought they were just camping.

In 1968, he was transferred to Cold

Lake, Alber ta. They were posted to Goose Bay, Labrador and then back to Cold Lake, Alberta in 1974 where they remained until he retired in 1980.

Al realized he could never get so many of these men out safely as more than half of the active Fire Fighters had been moved to Lahr, Germany.

Only the Pumper Operator and Al worked to put the fire out. An excited fellow kept climbing the ladder to see what was going on and later they found out that the guy was the one who had set the fire.

Commonwealth War Graves Commission Invites Canadians To Honour Their War Dead In Digital Remembrance Campaign Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC)

year, CWGC is launching #ShineOn, a digital remembrance campaign. Do your part in honouring Canada’s fallen by Encouraging Canadians to remember from home this participating in this powerful moment.

Ottawa (November 4, 2020) – This year, Remembrance Day will take a on a different form for the first time since Canadians observed it on November 11th, 1931. On the 75th Anniversary of the end of the Second World War, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission is committed to honouring fallen Canadians despite restrictions on traditional Remembrance Day gatherings due to COVID-19.

Remembrance Day is going to be different this year. There won’t be mass gatherings at the Cenotaph and war memorials, and many of us won’t be at our usual places of work to hold a communal two minutes silence. That’s why we are launching #ShineOn- an inclusive, accessible, digital Remembrance event.

We need the help of Canadians across the country to cast the net far and wide, and take a few self-

less minutes to remember those who fought so we can live today. To heighten awareness & increase involvement this Remembrance Day, Canadians can take to social media using the hashtag #ShineOn to share memories about fallen family members or friends. There is also a virtual experience on our website to allow people to name stars after commonwealth war dead.

“This Remembrance Day, we honour those who made the greatest sacrifice to secure a peaceful future for generations of Canadians,” said David Loveridge, CWGC’s Director for the Canada and the Americas Area. “In a year in which many of our Remembrance traditions sadly cannot take place as usual, we hope that Canadians come together virtually to pay tribute to Canada’s fallen.”

On Remembrance Day, CWGC encourages Canadians to take a moment at 7:00pm (EST) and look up to the stars to remember the fallen. CWGC will be shining searchlights into the sky at key locations during this special moment, and we hope everyone will take part.

John Karwandy

Air Force Veteran John Karwandy Veteran John Karwandy joined the Canadian Air Force in 1943.

Based mostly in Eastern Canada, Karwandy didn’t have to go to World War II. “I was 17 and a half years - old when I joined the Force in 1943 and the war was ending then so they didn’t send me, maybe they didn’t send me because I was too young. I missed all the fun stuff. I trained as an aerial photographer and I did a lot of dark room work,” said Karwandy.

Karwandy, 91, moved to Vermilion after he left the Air Force in 1967.

Unfortunately Karwandy has since passed, March 4, 2019.

Walter Emmuel Carlson was born in the Watrous, SK area December 27, 1912. After schooling, he worked in lumber camps. Walter enlisted in the army May 9, 1941 at Regina, SK in Support Group Ordnance Corp.

R.C.O.C 4th Canadian Armed Forces. 10th Canadian Inf. Bde. Workshop.

He was sent to Chatham, Ontario for training and later to Sussex, New Brunswick, and arrived in England August 24, 1942. They were sent to France, Belgium, Holland and Germany.

He came home September 12, 1945 and was discharged October 17, 1945. Photo Submitted

Remembrance Day November 11, 2020

During the early days of the Second Battle of Ypres a young Canadian artillery officer, Lieutenant Alexis Helmer, was killed on 2nd May, 1915 in the gun positions near Ypres. An exploding German artillery shell landed near him. He was serving in the same Canadian artillery unit as a friend of his, the Canadian military doctor and artillery commander Major John McCrae.

As the brigade doctor, John McCrae was asked to conduct the burial service for Alexis because the chaplain had been called away somewhere else on duty that evening. It is believed that later that evening, after the burial, John began the draft for his now famous poem “In Flanders Fields”.

William (Bill) Robinson wrote this poem in 1930 at the age of 20 years. He had immigrated to Canada in June 1929.

It was written as a Memorial to his father, George Robinson, who fought in the 36th Ulster Division and died on July 1, 1916 at the Battle of Somme in WW 1. George’s brother, William Robinson, served with the 36th Ulster Division of the British Expeditionary Force and as well died in 1917.

Bill Robinson is the father of Hilda Bell of Vermilion and Helen Taylor of Toronto.

Call To Remembrance (And Your Young Men Shall Dream Dreams Of Peace) With Reverence we bare our head In memory of the Honoured Dead Though they fell several years ago We still feel the grief and woe.

Second World War Veteran Shares Story Of Service, Loss Of Limb War Amps Submitted

On Remembrance Day this year, many Canadians will be reflecting on the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. Among those will be war amputee veteran Bob Gondek, of Toronto, who also carries a physical reminder of that pivotal time in history.

At the age of 96, Bob can still vividly recall serving alongside the Allied Forces with the 2nd Polish Corps during the Italian Campaign.

“We were climbing a hill, heavily laden with equipment carried by mules,” says Bob. “Germans were above and could easily see us. Their machine gun fire pinned us to the ground. We had to deal with completely unknown terrain and extreme darkness. Finally, I found a soft spot where I could seek temporary shelter.

In the morning, I realized I was laying on corpses, buried in shallow graves.”

In 1944, Bob was based outside Loretto, Italy, when heavy gun fire broke out.

“Without any order, I crawled up to them [the enemy] and threw a grenade,” says Bob. “I acted instinctively.” After a short period of silence, the enemy began firing mortars. “I remember an explosion and the smell of gunpowder,” he says. “I then realized that my weapon was gone and, in the place where my hand held the machine gun, there was nothing – I had lost part

of my left arm below the elbow. He was awarded the Virtuti Militari, the Polish equivalent of the Victoria Cross, for his valour in destroying two enemy machine gun nests. He also received the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restitua from Poland, the Cross of Valour, Merit Cross, Second Corps Army Medal and Monte Cassino Commemorative Cross.

In 1954, Bob immigrated to Canada where he became a member of The War Amps, an Association originally started by amputee veterans returning from the First World War to help each other adapt to their new reality as amputees.

Bob has dedicated a lifetime of service to The War Amps, holding various positions within the Association. He also became an inspiration to other amputees, showing them that an amputation is not a barrier to living a full and active life.

“You have to teach by example,” says Bob. “I don’t have an arm, but I enjoyed playing golf.”

Over the years, Bob has helped educate the younger generation about the horrors of war by going to schools and giving speeches to students. For the last 50 years on Remembrance Day, he has also laid a Second World War veteran Bob Gondek. Photo submitted

“I took a trip to a dentist in the University and thought, ‘I could do this’,” Radasic explained.

Radasic has been practicing dentistry for over 5 years now, and is coming to Vermilion Dental after working in Wainwright.

Radasic enjoys living rurally, and found it attractive to live close to home to get family support while starting her own family. Radasic’s first child is eight months old.

Another aspect of rural living that Radasic enjoys is the strong sense of community.

Dear Editor On October 28 2020 Garth Rowswell MLA for Vermilion, Lloydminster, Wainwright spoke in the legislature on the importance of the fossil fuel industry. In the process he also expressed skepticism about the effects of climate change and suggested that climate change is not a problem. He attempted to offer some evidence such as an increase in crop yields.

The sad fact is that climate change is occurring and is associated with increased carbon dioxide emissions connected with the use of fossil fuels. There is absolutely no doubt that the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has increased and that the greenhouse effect is real. One needs only to look at the increase in severe weather

such as hurricanes, wildfires, severe hailstorms and severe flooding to know that climate change is a problem. Several Alberta communities such as Slave Lake and Fort MacMurray have been affected.

In truth climate change is accepted science and cannot be intelligently denied.

I agree that the oil and gas industry is important to Alberta’s economic well being.

However, it is irresponsible to deny that it is associated with global warming and climate change. It might be prudent to outline the steps the industry has taken to mitigate the impact.

Does our MLA also believe that the earth is flat?

Buffalo Trail Public School- Staff, Students, Families, And Board Working Together!

Submitted NEWS RELEASE - November 2nd, 2020 There has been a lot for us to celebrate as we complete another month of school. This year, the BTPS Celebration Day looked different since we were unable to get together and our Staff Service Recognition Awards were presented at the individual schools.Board members also received service recognition awards in October. Trustee Eddleston received a PSBAA Long Service Award for 16 years of service and Board Chair Parr and Trustee Archibald received their Long Service awards for 10 years of service.

We are grateful to our staff and our Board members who dedicate so much time and effort to serve our students.

BTPS schools continue to engage students and families within the guidelines of the Re-entry Plan. Schools continued to have activities throughout the month of October to celebrate Awards, Thanksgiving, Fall, and Halloween. Our Board also engages with students and October’s student engagement session’s topic was “Working Together to Support Diversity and Promote Inclusion’. Classrooms and schools are busy preparing for virtual Remembrance Day Celebrations and virtual holiday celebrations in December.

Schools have been posting many pictures to share with their families on their school websites and social media sites to keep everyone informed of the amazing ways our staff engage students.

With only essential visitors allowed into buildings, schools have set up our parent/teacher conferences using google hangouts or phone calls. Some BTPS

schools reported more parents/guardians have been part of these conferences than in previous years. Schools continue to engage their families with emails and newsletters along with some videos and live streamed events. It is amazing to see the creative ways that schools and classrooms are connecting with our families.

Our Parent Councils have been meeting online and we thank the parents/guardians for volunteering their time to support our schools.

BTPS continues to update re-entry guidelines and ensures alignment of our regulations with AHS. Effective Nov. 2, Alberta removed runny nose and sore throat from the list of core symptoms requiring mandatory isolation for those under the age of 18. There is a new AHS daily checklist used for school and child care settings which is posted on our website.

Our BTPS guidelines continue to have only essential visitors to our buildings; no live performances or events; and sports teams are able to practice. This weekend, BTPS had confirmation that one student had tested positive for COVID-19. This is our first COVID-19 case within our schools.

When this occurs, we are not allowed to share student information with people out of respect and in accordance with Alberta Health Services privacy guidelines. As per the AHS regulations, all close contacts were notified and are in isolation.

The government’s Occupational, Health and Safety audits were completed at 3 BTPS schools and no deficiencies were reported. We are fortunate to have such an amazing team taking care of each other and our students.

November 9-12 there is no school for

students as there will be professional learning days for staff on November 9 and 10, Remembrance Day on November 11 and then two staff Days in Lieu on November 12th and 13th. For Remembrance Day, we have a video message which is posted on our website. November 11th is a time that we set aside to remember those

who fought for our freedom. BTPS sends condolences to the family of Corporal James Choi who died October 31 following an incident at the Wainwright military base.

On November 18 , we will be handing out our academic student awards for last year. Unfortunately, we are not able to celebrate as usual, and so cannot invite parents and guests to this celebration. We do plan to video the presentations and make them available on our website for parents to watch.

Halloween Dress Up Day saw creative costumes with many students working together to create group costumes. As we were not able to do our usual group activities at the end of the day, teachers decided to host in-class activities and Pirate Crews provided candy to each of their students.

November 4 should have been “Take Your Kids to Work” day for grade 9 students.

Unfortunately, this activity has been suspended this year due to the COVID19 situation.

Remembrance Day Ceremonies were held on Friday, November 6 during block 3 & 4 in our individual classrooms. Pirate Crews also made it a Formal Dress Up Day. Mr. Maier put together a 20 minute video presentation to be shown and it was an opportunity to time the act of remembrance with eleven o’clock for the first time ever at our school. May we take this opportunity to reflect and thank those who have sacrificed their time so we may live the life we enjoy in Canada today.

Thank you to all the VES families who participated in our VES Fit Family Challenge. We enjoyed seeing, and took inspiration from, all the fun and different ways families found to be active together. What a great way to stay connected with our families when we don’t get to see them as often in our hallways. We made the draw for the Fit Family Fun Basket at our November assembly and the winning entry was Emma Chapman and her family.

The Vermilion Elementary School Lunch Program Society are excited to be able to offer a pilot project of hot lunch meal delivery. They will start with just one meal per week, with half of the classes receiving lunch on Wednesdays (KA and Grades 1, 2, 3), and the other half on

To begin, they will be partnering up with Cornerstone Co-op and their Homestyle Meal Program options. Meals will be delivered to classrooms instead of students lining up to the kitchen. To meet BTPS COVID19 requirements, they unfortunately cannot have all of the lovely community and parent volunteers they have had in the past. Karen and Donna will be doing some prep work and portioning of the food, delivering to classrooms at specific times, and then collecting the garbage and cleaning afterwards.

From 4:30-7:30 on both the evenings of November 4 and 5, VES held their parent teacher interviews. Unfortunately, we could not do this as we had in the past.

This year, every teacher phoned parents and the interview was held over the phone.

We would like to thank parents for their flexibility with this option.

During the week of November 9-13, students have five days off from school.

November 9 is a School Learning Day, November 10 is an ATA Professional Development Day, Remembrance Day is on November 11, and November 12 and 13 are days in lieu.

Photo retake day is the morning of November 19. Any students who did not get their photo taken or want to have a different photo taken, will have an opportunity to do so on this day.

Another month has flown by, and what a fun-filled month October was! Halloween looked a little different this year, but staff and students still had a blast! Students enjoyed Halloween celebrations and activities with their individual classes. Grade 1, 2, & 3 students enjoyed many pumpkin activities, thanks to the kind donation of pumpkins from Irene Rochford, Morgan Richards, and Kris Jacula. Grade 1 students painted their pumpkins, some had beautiful designs, while others got turned into spooky monsters like Frankenstein.

Grade 2 & 2/3 students sharpened their carving skills and carved jack-o-lanterns to bring home. Halloween Bingo, freeze dance, and a costume competition in high school brought smiles and some amazing costumes to our halls. The elementary students wore masks, and spaced themselves out throughout the hallways for a

St. Jerome’s School News

Halloween parade. There were Spartan warriors, plague doctors, knights in shining armor and many beautiful princesses!

Some St. Jerome’s staff members played a game of “Guess Who” dressing up as various staff members from throughout the school. Students and staff had fun trying to figure out “who was who!” October 31 was also the Happigram celebration for elementary students. Teachers presented students their Happigram in front of their peers and some sent parents a video so they could celebrate with their child as well.

The last few weeks of October have been filled with generosity and giving as well. St. Jerome’s wrapped up their Socktober sock drive, which was a house competition in which students brought new socks in to go to those in need this winter. MacKenzie was the winning house, and the school collected an astounding 532 pairs of socks in total. Way to go Spartans! On October 28, we participated in the FCC Scare Away Hunger Loonie Drive, to raise money for the Vermilion Food Bank. This was also a house competition, with Fraser bringing in the most money. Overall, the school raised $440 to help support our local food bank.

In the next couple of weeks, St. Jerome’s Faith in Action Team and VIBE will be collaborating to participate in the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child shoebox campaign. Due to COVID restrictions we will be doing things a little bit differently this year. Instead of just sending in items as donations, we ask that you send in pre-packed shoebox with a $10 donation accompanying it, to help pay for transport and logistics costs. Our Grade 8 students had the wonderful opportunity to attend Mass on Wednesday, November 4. Accompanied by Mr. Whelan and Mrs. Fillier, students enjoyed a beautiful fall walk to church. Father Joy was very excited to see us back at Mass! Despite some slight changes, everything went well.

The students said they missed the music and singing the most, but that overall it was really nice to get back to church!

Although it won’t be a grand production at the college this year, the elementary staff are still planning a “12 Days of Christmas” digital Christmas Concert. Starting with Kindergarten on December 7, we will release one class Christmas performance video every school day leading up to Christmas break. These videos will be prerecorded and your child’s teacher will be in contact with you to give you more information soon. We can’t wait to celebrate the birth of Jesus and the Christmas season with you!
