Lakeland College Fire School Grad

Fire School graduates from the P3 Program.

Lakeland College Fire School held a graduation for their 12-week P3 program on October 16.

The Fire School has encountered many interruptions in their programming due to COVID-19, as they were only able to run two programs this year rather than the usual three or four.

Lakeland’s blended program, which consists of some online classes and in-person classes, began in January.

Despite COVID-19, students were able to complete the online portion of their course, and completed the in-person portion later in the year.

The P3 program was able to run fully throughout their course with no interruptions, with a full class of 27 students.

“We managed to run both programs without anyone getting sick,” Fire School Dean Chris Senaratne proudly reported.

Kneaded Relief Grand Opening

On O ctober 3 0, Kneaded Relief massage therapy clinic had its grand opening, in collaboration with Northern Lights Realty broker owner Wendy Unrau.

Kneaded Relief opened on February 1 this year, and due to COVID-19, had to shut down on March 20. On June 18, the clinic reopened. The grand opening was held in collaboration with Northern Lights Realty as Unrau took over the business on October 1. Unrau had been an associate broker at Northern Lights Realty since August 25, and wanted to make the community aware that the business had changed hands.

The grand opening consisted of numerous giveaways as well as some desserts and coffee. Kneaded Relief held draws throughout the day on Friday and two draws on Thursday. Giveaways included massages, products sold in the shop, face

and scalp treatments, and more. oils diffuser, and furniture refurbished by Kneaded Relief owner Brooke Wasyl- SHESHOP. ishen has been a massage therapist for 15 years after taking a massage therapy course through Lakeland College.

She looks forward to serving Vermilion’s community and hopes to hire more therapists to accommodate for night massages.

Wasylishen hopes that one day she can be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays.

“November and December are the busiest times for massage therapy,” Wasylishen commented.

Kneaded Relief consists of two treatment rooms and an infrared sauna, which helps detoxify and aids in weight loss. The sauna also helps in warming up muscles so they are easier to treat in massage.

Greek ribs are an excellent way to use pork ribs. Serve with oven roasted potatoes or rice, a cooked ve g e t a b l e s u c h a s carrots and a side salad with Greek or ranch dressing. I cannot describe how wonderful this smell as it is cooking.

Once you taste these, this recipe is sure to become one of your favorites for both family meals and company entertaining.

Greek Ribs

2 racks of pork ribs, with about 12 ribs per side 1/4 cup olive oil 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice 1 tablespoon of honey 2 tablespoons teaspoon dried oregano leaves 1 teaspoon sea salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 2 teaspoons lemon zest 5 cloves garlic pressed 1 onion grated Optional 2 tablespoons red wine or red wine vinegar.

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Cut

the meat into individual ribs and place in a glass or stainless-steel bowl. Stir the olive oil into the cubed meat. In a small bowl prepare the marinade by combining the olive oil, lemon juice, lemon zest, oregano, salt, pepper, honey, garlic, onion and the optional red wine.

Stir all the ingredients together. Tip: To release a full aroma from the oregano crush the dried herbs in your hands or use a mortar and pestle before adding them to the marinade or use a mortar and pestle. There is a piece of small kitchen equipment called a garlic press that does wonders with the garlic for this

recipe. If you do not have garlic press then mince the garlic very finely. I have a mini food processor that I finely chop the onion and garlic up in. Place each rib into the coating mixture, and place on a cookie sheet. The olive oil draws out the pro inflammatory arachidonic acid from the meat, while the lemon tenderizes the meat. If you are opposed to red wine you can substitute red wine vinegar. Many of the flavonoids in the oregano are wonderful antioxidants.

Bake at 400 degree for 20 minutes, and then reduce the heat and bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.

While most school districts in the area were organized in the early-1900s, some schools came into being later in life. One such school was Canyon View, whose school district was organized in 1936 with C.W. Hayes of Onion Lake serving as the secretary for the district. naming it after a place he loved in British Columbia.

Many felt that the name was appropriate as the school district stretched along the North Saskatchewan River valley for eight miles.

With the district organized, classes soon started but at the time there was no school.

Until the school was built, classes were held in a log house once owned by Allen Flemming, with Anne Kuziw serving as the first teacher to six students. That student count would not get much higher, reaching as low as four students in the 1940s.

In the fall of 1937, Since 1969 logs were cut on the river and taken to the site of the new school, which was built that same year.

For the next several years the school would operate with a small group of students. In 1943, Canyon View and St. Margaret school joined together with

classes being held at the Canyon View.

By the last year that the school operated, 1945, there were only four students in the school, from three families in the area.

While the school only operated from 1936 to 1945, a very brief period for any school, those who attended school there will always remember the memories. Some of the things related by those who attended the school included: A poster on the north wall of a boy blowing his nose.

Innisfree, Alta – In the early evening hours of October 18, 2020 Vermilion RCMP were notified of a theft at a restaurant in Innisfree. The onsite video surveillance captured the 2 suspects leaving in a grey Dodge pickup truck with several items in the box of the truck, including a numerous folding tables. The truck was last seen travelling East on Highway 16 from Highway 870.

Vermilion RCMP are asking the public who may have been travelling in that area, at approximately 7:15 P.M. if they have any information including dash cam footage of this notable truck, to contact police.

Newcomers Welcomed To Lakeland Board Of Governors

Submitted Lakeland College Board of Governors welcomes four new public members. “ We are pleased to welcome our new members to our Board of Governors. They bring a wealth of expert i s e, ex p e r i e n c e, k n o w l e d g e a n d connections with them and our Lakeland community is enriched with their presence,” says Scott Webb, chair of the Lakeland College Board of Governors.

The four new public members are Brent Fischer, Jessica Kelly, Lloyd Snelgrove and Adam Waterman.

Brent Fischer is the co - owner of Pleasantview Farms Ltd. He has been involved with many local community organizations, including chairing the Irma and District School Enhancem e n t S o c i e t y. H e h a s a l s o b e e n involved with the local Minor Hockey program, Irma Summerspiel, Alberta Charolais Association, Hardisty Feeder Association and the MD of Wainwright Ag Service Board. Fischer received the Senators’ Contribution Awar d for Vo lunte er i s m an d Civ i c Engagement in 2017. He is a graduate of Olds College’s Agriculture Mechan-

Jessica Kelly grew up on a grain farm just outside of Lloydminster and is an alumna of Lakeland’s University Transfer program. She obtained a Bachelor Of Arts Degree in Political Science from the Universit y of Lethbridge in 2012, and a Juris Doctor Degree from the Universit y Of Saskatchewan College Of Law in 2017. She completed her articles with PSM Lawyers and has been an associate with the firm ever since.

Lloyd Snelgrove was born on a farm in the Vermilion area and worked with his family ’s construction company until 2000, when he was elected as the MLA representing the VermilionLloydminster riding. He served three terms with the Government of Alberta in many capacities, including as Minister of Service Alberta, Treasury Board President and Minister of Finance and Enterprise. Snelgrove and his wife currently operate a campground resort on Muriel Lake.

Adam Waterman has worked in the oil and gas industry for 15 years, and currently works in operations management for a mid-sized producer. He is the current president of the Lloydmin-

What’s The Plan For The Arena?

Submitted I’m writing this because I’m confused.

I’m not sure if this should be directed to our town council or to the citizens in and around Vermilion. This year with Covid, Vermilion minor hockey, figure skating, rec leagues, and the Jr. B Tigers have finally started, with lots of obstacles and hoops to go through. With many volunteers and hard work things have finally progressed and associations have begun. We are a month in and games are about to start. For weeks the rumour mill has gone around about when the second ice surface will open (the arena). I’ve been told a few different stories, AHS have regulations that’s why we are unable to open, it’s not feasible if there are no games. I get it, but now games are starting, and ice time is a hot commodity. Now as a parent, tax payer, volunteer in this community I am confused, now we are being told its not feasible financially for the town. Typically, minor hockey kids, get two practices per week and games on weekends. With there only being one ice surface available only one practice a week can be offered on average. Figure skating has been asked to cut back their hours to help accommodate minor hockey’s demands. Also, rec teams that would normally fill a game slot per week are now having to share that spot with another team and are sourcing ice time in other communities to get games played. This year it was a suggestion that kids pick one cohort sport to be in, so numbers are down a touch. However, most did choose hockey. Their passion. If

they had known they would be dealt ½ the ice time they have known for years, would this have been their number 1 choice?

So, with that being said there are 207 kids in minor hockey that choose to play this year. We have 14 teams in minor hockey which means 28 practices a week, plus Jr. B, figure skating, rec teams and commercial hockey league teams. Seems like a lot. Some people would disagree. Minor hockey was told we need to use 50 hours a week to make ends meet, they use 31.5 hours per week for practices alone. This year with Covid rules there will be no tournaments which usually fills our weekends.

But between, boys league games and girls league games most hours will be filled. To full capacity I, nor anyone can guarantee this. How ever is it our job as a community to deny youth from what is normal? If any thing our community should be offering extra things for our families to do since we are being asked to stick close to home and remain within cohorts. If we need to save money as a town is our youth activities the way to cut back. Good to see our town employees took a wage freeze for two years. Did our council? Maybe this isn’t the best time to bring up the new highspeed internet our town invested in, that only seems to service the businesses on 47th Ave. The money spent on this venture alone is for another day and another time.

All I’m trying to say is spending money has to be done right. As a business owner I know a lot of businesses down town are struggling through Covid, people have wages lost. Lots of business kept chugging

along not making any money to better our to work together I hope our town council community. I just believe it’s time for coun- makes the right decision and opens our cil to step up and start putting the commu- arena. nity interests first. Adventures And Reinvention Of A Vermilion ‘Home Girl’

Is it possible that growing up a Vermilion prairie girl and a career in the entertainment industry are the best training for surviving a global pandemic?

Who would’ve thought that the little girl from small town Vermilion would take the resilience and resolved instilled by her rural upbringing and turn it into a veritable ‘how to’ lesson for not only surviving but thriving in a business that is known, at the best of times, for eating it’s young? (Laterally!

Take note; the average career for a dancer comes to an abrupt end at about age 30).

But Wasylik-Clarke is anything but average. She has turned her skills, earned by decades as a self employed performer, wardrobe mistress, producer, wife, mother, avid volunteer and casting director into a life lesson, a perfect life lesson for 2020.

Never dreaming you could make a career out of what she was witnessing or imagining herself one day being celebrated for her talent and versatility as both performer and producer.

It all started when she and her sister, Kym Wasylik-Nicoll, barely more than toddlers trotted off to dance lessons. Their parents, Irene & John, were determined to give the girls the opportunity no matter how challenging it was to fit dance classes into a full family life that included running the family business (J. Wasylik and Sons Construction). A long list of teachers and mentors followed as Wasylik-Clarke advanced: Georgina Tillipaugh, (from Veg), and later Alison Lamont (Alison Lamont School of Dance in Lloydminster), and Dominique Gauvin who both inspired Kerri to consider continuing her training at their alma matter: Toronto’s Ryerson Polytechnic. With no fear of hard work, courage, and determination, Kerri packed her bags, and with her family’s blessing, headed to the big city.

When reached in her kitchen in Toronto’s Beaches neighborhood recently, Kerri was baking cinnamon buns and making freezer meals for her youngest son’s gymnastics coach, whose wife had just given birth, (it appears that the small-town girl is still there under the accomplished businesswoman and showbiz veteran). She laughed off the next steps in her career as ‘luck’ but anyone with half a brain knows that her success is due 90% to hard work and only 10% to being in the right place at the right time.

Finding her niche in musical theatre Wasylik-Clarke performed with numerous regional theatre companies before getting what she calls her big break: her eventual role as Bombellurina in the Toronto production (and Canadian Touring Company) of the hit musical CATS. CATS opened doors for Kerri and she was smart enough to know how to take the opportunity and run with it. It also provided

a lot of great memories and connections that have lasted a lifetime. Kerri explained: “in our business it’s often as much about who you know as what you know. When you are first starting out it is so easy to be intimidated by everyone and everything but thankfully, I started building relationships and keeping track of people. That ability to maintain connections continues to serve me because as a performer and self employed person I have reinvented myself over and over again.” Kerri went on to say: “CATS was an exceptionally gruelling show and it took it’s toll on our bodies, but I loved every second of it; it provided the foundation for my career and so many great moments.

Two memories really stand out. When we were on tour, we played Edmonton and finally my friends and family were able to see what it was that I left home for- that was really important to me and my family! The other memory was meeting and getting to dance at a gala with HRH Prince Edward as he, like me, was employed by part of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s empire.

As soon as CATS ‘wrapped’ Kerri was asked to join the cast of the highly acclaimed musical ‘DURANTE, then on tour in the US. “I had a vague memory of seeing Jimmy Durante on those old variety shows and in black and white movies. I knew he was a movie star, musical performer and comedian but never dreamt that I would find myself touring the USA in a musical that told his life’s story”. Like CATS and every other production Kerri has appeared in, there are stories. Kerri had the misfortune of being with the show in 1989 when it appeared in San Francisco. If you remember your history that was the year of the big earth quake. “It was a terrifying, surreal time.” Kerri says: “The theatre we were playing was condemned because of structural damage.

After having to hang out in a devastated San Fran, we were finally able to then move the tour to L.A. We enjoyed a lavish starstudded opening in LA, only to close shortly after. Ultimately the earth quake played a big part in the show’s premature closing.

But as a performer you have to learn to be adaptable, and so, we were all scrambling for work again. It reminds me a lot of what is going on now with theatres being closed because of the pandemic. But at least then there were other theatres open and we could come home to Toronto and find jobs.

So, I went home and hit the audition circuit.

Thankfully I landed a job at Canada’s celebrated Stratford Festival. And if there was anyone in the theatre world in Canada that I had not met yet I certainty had the opportunity to with a Stratford connection! Again, I don’t think I realized it at the time but this was all setting me up for the future; connections, the ability to pivot quickly, to not have a melt down but to change direction and adapt. Those are skills that I began learning from my parents and refined through a life in show biz.”

who of North American theatre: two productions of Show Boat for Tony Award winning director/choreographer Susan Stroman and New York theatre legend Hal Prince, Brian Macdonald’s Tony award winning production of The Mikado, the original Canadian production of Crazy For You, produced by the Mirvish theatre empire and countless ‘industrial or corporate shows, which have allowed her to travel around the world.

Somehow in the middle of this busy career Kerri met and married her actor/ business man husband Shaun Clarke, eventually adding two sons to the family, Owen now 21, (at Western University studying Business Management) and Ryan 18, recently graduated and following his parent’s into the entertainment industry, but as a stunt performer).

Any working mother will tell you that it is always a balance but if your work has you doing eight shows a week, sometimes hundreds of miles from home it gets complicated! “Thankfully, I have an amazing family. My mom Irene and my sister Kym have many times traveled to wherever I was performing to help out with child care.

Sometimes both Shaun and I were performing at the same time and we literally learned to juggle kids! We have had to adjust to everything from taking the kids on the road to handing off kids in parking lots between auditions and rehearsals. But at the same time, we began to see that our talents and contacts could turn into a business.”

Eventually Kerri and Shaun began their own business, a corporate talent brokerage company- providing talent to, among other things, corporations for live events. Having grown up in a family business this was not an uninformed decision for Wasylik-Clarke.

She knew what she was getting into was more hard work and more scrambling, But listening to her describe her adventures like traveling by Hercules to Alert, to entertain Canadian Armed Forces in minus 40 degrees and doing everything from playing a dancing lightbulb to a dancing cop for Kurt Russell as Santa, in ‘Christmas Chronicles’, you have no doubt that this woman is well equipped to do whatever it takes to get things done, no matter what those ‘things’ are!

Over the last two decades her adventures continue although, for the most part she has retired her dancing shoes Kerri still performs in everything from commercials and TV shows to feature films. Watch for her in Warehouse 13, Murdoch Mysteries, Amelia, Janek. But if you ask her what her biggest skill is, she will tell you: “it is knowing what you have to offer and what the ‘audience’ wants. Sometimes the audience is a director, a choreographer or the audience sitting across the footlights. Sometimes the audience is a corporate client. I have had to reinvent myself so many times over the years, as do all freelancers; I have had to learn to bounce not break. The biggest skill Shaun and I have to offer in our business;

All was going along swimmingly until March 12, 2020. That was the date that all events, theatre and production entered a state of COVID induced suspended animation. And, as Kerri says: “we know the date it started but we have yet to identify the end date, so it’s time for another reinvention”.

Wasylik-Clarke goes onto explain: “For years because of the all-encompassing nature our business it’s not unusual for my friends in the industry and I to work 12 hour days for weeks on end so we find ourselves almost having to walk away from our ‘regular lives’. This leaves your world in shambles! Home maintenance doesn’t happen, dry cleaning never gets picked up, birthdays are missed, emails not returned, calls unanswered, you get the picture. And this happens to a lot of people in a lot of different businesses. So, for years a good friend of mine and I (she also a former dancer turned media professional), have talked about starting an executive concierge business. And that’s just what we’ve done, and it’s more than just our ‘pandemic project’, it’s a viable pivot using all the skills we have learned over the years: figuring out what the audience wants and delivering.”

This new business; SOMEBODY SOMETIME is already flourishing. It appears that the adventures of small-town girl turned entertainer, turned producer, turned casting directing is taking yet another turn. If Kerri did not know when she was watching variety shows on TV as a child growing up in Vermilion that she would spend a big part of her life on the stage then she most definitely did not know that the training that life would provide would turn her into a living example of pandemic survivalist. And she is not just surviving, she’s thriving because it turns out that a freelancer’s skills, a performer’s skill are just what’s needed in 2020. We can all take a lesson!

Changes In Legion’s Poppy Campaign

“We’ve had big changes this year,” said Poppy campaign chairman, Marcel Lefebvre.

The Legion’s annual poppy campaign is typically quite a widespread event throughout Canada and in Vermilion’s community, with poppies available at various locations around town. However, this year, Lefebvre reports the Legion has been told “we have to scale it back.”

This year, poppy trays will only be available in high-traffic areas, such as convenience stores and liquor stores. The annual wreath campaign also looks vastly different, as this year, the legion will not be able to go door to door selling wreaths.

Instead, individuals are encouraged to call the legion at 780-853-5867 and pick up the wreaths.

The annual Remembrance Day cere-

mony is a go this year, however, those interested in laying their wreaths at the Cenotaph will have to lay them either a day early or before the ceremony. The ceremony will be live-streamed on Zoom by the Town of Vermilion; however, as long as social distance measures are met, in-person attendance is permitted. Masks will be mandatory for the ceremony. The Legion also hopes to have RCMP and Fire Department attendees at the event.

“As far as I’m concerned, we have plenty of room for social distancing around the Cenotaph,” commented Lefebvre.

Unfortunately, the parade following the ceremony will only consist of Legion members as health guidelines will be strict.

As the Legion is an entirely volunteer-based organization, donations to the poppy campaign are not to benefit

the Legion. In the past, the Legion has used funds from the poppy campaign to put towards community projects. Last year, the Legion provided wheelchairs to the hospital, and slings to Vermilion’s

Extended Care unit.

“Any money donated to the poppy campaign goes right back into the c o m m u n i t y o n e w ay o r a n o t h e r,” explained Lefebvre.

COVID Community Roots Program Providing Funding Across Rural Alberta

Submitted Alber ta Blue Cross is calling on organizations across rural Alber ta that are ser ving their communities through the pandemic to apply for grant funding through its COVID Communit y Roots Program, whic h runs through to the end of 2020.

As par t of its $ 50 0,0 0 0 c ommitment to suppor ting communities through the impact of the pandemic and the impact of low oil prices on the provincial economy, Alberta Blue Cross launched its COVID Commun i t y R o o t s Pr o g r a m i n m i d - J u n e.

The program is funded through its community foundation. “ Through this program, we are

of fering grants of up to $5,0 0 0 for g r a s s r o o t s , c o m m u n i t y- l e d i n i t i a tives serving vulnerable populations during the pandemic specifically to s u p p o r t s e r v i c e s r u n i n r ur a l a n d r e m o t e c o m m u n i t i e s ,” s ay s B r i a n Geislinger, vice-president of Corporate Relations with Alber ta Blue Cross.

Alberta Blue Cross has partnered on the program with the Alber ta Recreation and Parks Asso c iation and Communities Choosewell, who are helping to promote the program and review applications.

“We’ve had a great response to this program so far, with more than 100 applic ations re c eived from across

the province,” says Geislinger.

Some of the initiatives being funded to date include the For t McKay Women’s Association, which requested help to purchase supplies including spor ts equipment, tables, chairs, hand sanitizer and gloves to eliminate sharing equipment during its summer recreation programs for k i d s; B u i l d i n g B r a i n s To g e t h e r, a charit y in Lethbridge that provides mental health programs for newcomers and refugees —this funding will cover the cost of creating 200 takehome weekly activity kits for program participants; the Boys and Girls Club of Leduc, ser ving high risk children and youth, asked for funding to help

retrofit the club by installing acrylic barriers, social distancing markers, signage and sanitation stations so that it could reopen; and the Town of Westlock, which requested support to cover expenses for a program through which it is partnering up with Alberta Health Services to conduct wellness calls, visits and grocery deliveries to isolated rural seniors.

Ghost Signs

With Vermilion being a historic town, it tends to show its age. When taking a tour of our town you might notice old signs from past businesses on some of the older buildings. These are called Ghost Signs.

While many of the present day business owners preserve the signs by repainting them, many keep them as is in order to reserve the nostalgic appeal to the look of the building.

Hooper’s originally was built as a

car wash and later transformed into a mechanic shop. Although the years of the transformation are unknown at this time, it is said that a gentleman named Wayne Hooper had owned the building.

Vermilion Valley Fertilizers was started

by Harold Geislinger and a partner around 1975. They built a bulk fertilizer plant and installed an anhydrous ammonia facilit y as well.

and the business from Rowswell. After a number of mergers in the grain business Agricore United purchased the site.

Rally To Protect Public Health Care

A group of concerned citizens of Vermilion held a rally in front of the hospital to voice concerns about the privatization of health care on October 30.

The group, called the Vermilion Community Public Action Team, has reportedly been meeting informally for nine months to discuss their concerns and take action. They have been proactive in voicing their concerns via letters, social media, in marches with United Nurses of Alberta (UNA) and Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE), and in phone campaigns.

As the group has a great appreciation for public health care workers, they hope to voice the concerns of health care workers as well. Despite previous associations with organizations such as UNA and AUPE, the rally was an independent event, and is The Vermilion Community Public Action Team rallying on October 30. Canadian Soldier Killed While Training In Wainwright, Alta.

Submitted Canadian Armed Forces Identifies Soldier Killed While Training In Wainwright, Alta.

November 1, 2020 – Edmonton, Alta. – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces Corporal (Cpl) James Choi, a member of the Royal Westminster Regiment, based in New Westminster, B.C., died on October 31, 2020 as the result of a gunshot wound sustained while training at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright.

Cpl Choi joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 2016 and was a trained infantry soldier. At the time of the incident, Cpl Choi had augmented 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry for a fall continuation training exercise that focuses on core light infantry skills. He was 29 years old.

Cpl Choi and his fellow soldiers were conducting a live-fire training exercise when the incident occurred. The incident remains

under investigation.

While many people hunt wildlife to fill their freezers and provide food for their family, others hunt for sport. No matter what type of hunting you are doing, common courtesy and respect are essential.

Land owners want to know who is on their property and what they are doing there. Hunting on another person’s land is a privilege, not a right. Every year it seems

Hunting Season Has Arrived! like more and more areas are being posted with “no trespassing” and “no hunting”.

While some land owners post their land so they can hunt on it themselves, they often post it because hunters have been disrespectful in previous years by creating ruts with a vehicle, cutting fences, leaving gates open, driving on an un-harvested crop, or agitating live-stock.

After the hunt, it is best to show your appreciation by stopping by and thanking

the land owner for allowing access to their land. Some even give thank you cards, a portion of the meat they have harvested, or other forms of gratitude.

For young people and children, hunting is encouraged to get involved in the outdoors and develop natural senses and skills. They get to learn about survival skills and animal behavior. Also building stealth, stamina and concentration. Seasoned hunters get a chance to pass on their

knowledge about techniques used for generations, and respect to the land and animals, thus shaping an ethical hunter.

Many environmentalists oppose hunting because they consider the killing of animals for sport to be inhumane and a persisting remnant of barbaric human history. However, to achieve ecological sustainability, controlled/regulated hunting is proven to be the most effective form of wildlife management.

Crisis comes to most people at some time and we especially think of crisis experienced during times of family violence. November’s focus is on family violence and crisis. Crisis that is experienced is responded to differently by each person in their unique situation and with what coping skills they know.

Crisis brings forth various emotions such as fear, anger, anxie t y, h e l p l e s s n e s s a n d t h e n a t u ral “ fight-flight” response. If experienced for an extended period of time, those emotions mentioned, affect our mental health and how we cope on a daily basis. As well as having mental health needs we all have physical needs as well; safet y, food, shelter and we need love and a sense of belonging to counter the Crisis

Whenever we experience crisis we experience losses in our life, too.

Crisis changes our lives, our trust, our security, and our world assumptions are challenged. What is safe and what is normal? Vermilion Curling Club Returns

On October 22, the Vermilion Curling Club had its first Super League game.

The Curling Club is returning with only a few COVID -19 guidelines to enforce social distancing and sanitization. The Club is operating on one sweeper per rock, and rocks and touch points around the building are sani-

tized. The lounge is also open, with social distancing measures in effect.

“We’re glad we’re able to curl this year with all the uncer taint y in the world,” commented Curling Club President Andrew McCrae.

The Afternoon League started on November 2, which runs Mondays and Wednesdays starting at 1 p.m. While the main demographic of the after-

noon league is seniors and retirees, everyone is welcome to join in. The Women’s League is ever y Tuesday starting November 3, the Men’s League is every Wednesday starting November 4, and Junior Leagues are Monday and Tuesdays. On October 26, we received a credit of $1800 from Cornerstone Co-op as a donation. This was a result of the Bags for Breakfast program from last year. We will be directing this money to the breakfast program at our school.

The Scholastic Book Fair took place virtually this year. As such, the sales were below those from last year. Any money made from the book fair will be used to buy more books for our learning commons, as well as hosting author visits when they are allowed again.

All staff at V.E.S had a professional development day on October 23. Barbara Wright from St. Louis, Missouri, came to us virtually to talk with teachers about the accelerated reading program. Tom Hierck virtually talked to teachers about staff wellness during the pandemic. Brandon Tupper visited our school to give our whole staff a presentation on the future of our hot lunch program. Support staff were involved in sessions regarding corona, curriculum and connection.

Throughout the week of October 26-30, each V.E.S class took part in some fun Halloween activities, such as eye spy, words puzzles, dance movement and writing assignments. Then on October 30, each cohort (K-3 and 4-6) had a costume

parade and a mini dance. It was nice to have some sort of normalcy even though many things were different from how we usually celebrate Halloween.

We will be selling Mom’s Pantry Products as a fundraiser for Kindergarten again this year. The money that is earned will directly benefit the Kindergarten students. In the past, the money has been used to purchase a wide range of learning resources, such as puzzles, games, toys and manipulatives, as well as a variety of materials for fun classroom activities. It also provides funds to cover some of the field trip expenses. This is the only Kindergarten fundraiser for the year. All of the orders will be gathered at school, sent in, and will be delivered back to the school by the beginning of December.

V.E.S will have their Remembrance Day Gr. 4A Halloween customes. ceremony virtually on November 6. Each class will be making a wreath to put up in their classroom during the ceremony. We feel fortunate to have been sent videos from Canadian Armed Forces members to play during our ceremony. It is very sad to think that our veterans and military personnel are unable to join us this year. We will hold them in our thoughts as we remember the sacrifices they made, and continue to make, for us.

New Chiropractic Services Offered In Vermilion

been interested in the human body and health care, but didn’t fully know how it would become a career.

“During my studies in Winnipeg, I met several experienced chiropractors, from whom I learned quite a bit about the intricacies of the profession. The unique nature of the career and the very hands-on approach to patient care sparked my interest, and so I pursued my doctorate of chiropractic in Sydney. I chose Australia as a destination for university as their approach to training chiropractors is very much a blended one, consisting of not only adjusting the joints of the body, but using muscle release techniques, rehab, supplements and nutrition and various other adjunctive modalities to provide the best patient care possible,” explained Dr. Stoyko.

Dr. Stoyko began practicing in Winnipeg in the beginning of 2012, but moved to the

Battlefords, and then to Kelowna for a short period of time before settling in Lloydminster.

“I knew after graduating I wanted to end up in a smaller community, rather than a bigger city,” explained Dr. Stoyko, who went on to say that most of his family still resides in Winnipeg and he makes an effort to go back home several times a year to visit. He also has one sister who works as a clinical psychologist.

Dr. Stoyko is well praised on the medical rating site ratemds.com for his use of various techniques. “Dr. Stoyko is amazing! He’s the only chiropractor who has actually fixed me! His technique is amazing, he works on your muscles and not just ‘cracking,’” stated a reviewer. According to his bio on the PHotential Health website, Stoyko is a “well-rounded chiropractor who believes that treating ailments of the

In his spare time Dr. Stoyko enjoys weight training, skiing and hiking in the mountains, playing guitar, cooking and anything outdoors. He is also fond of carpentry work and landscaping. He enjoys animals and has had several bulldog-breed dogs.

PHotential Health in Vermilion is now offering Chiropractic services from Dr. Ryan Stoyko.

Dr. Stoyko is originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba, and currently lives on a small acreage just outside Lloydminster.

Dr. Stoyko completed most of his undergrad studies in Winnipeg but completed the remainder of his studies where he received a Bachelor of Science as well as a doctorate in Sydney, Australia, from Macquarie University, and was awarded for obtaining the highest GPA for the year in which he studied.

“I received an award for earning the highest GPA of my class for the first portion of the chiropractic program in Sydney,” said Stoyko.
