Due to COVID-19, some adjustments have been made to Santa’s Anonymous this year.

Santa’s Anonymous will be unable to accept their usual donations of gifts and

food baskets this year due to COVID-19 restrictions and safety concerns. Santa’s Anonymous is accepting monetary donations such as cash, cheques, and gift cards, and they have opened up their donations early this year to allow for families they support to complete Christmas

shopping for themselves. Donations will be mailed out to families by December 7.

To become a recipient of Santa’s Anonymous, one must complete a registration form including a reference from Human resources, Children Services, School staff, Clergy, Counsellors, Munici-

pal administration or councillors, FCSS, nurses, or RCMP members. Donation boxes for Santa’s Anonymous can be found in Vermilion drugstores, grocery stores, banks, The Bargain Shop, or in Mannville at the Mannville Beauty salon or Mannville Co-op.

Af ter ap proximately 50 year s of practicing in Vermilion, Dr. Stewar t Hunter retired last week.

Dr. Hunter embarked on his journey in studying and practicing medicine in Liverpool, England. Since the age of eight, Dr. Hunter had dreamed of being a surgeon. He studied at the Univer sit y of Liver p o o l, ac hieving four graduate degrees with a distinction in Public Health, and First Prize in Clinical Surgical Competency. He worked with world-famous professor Sir Norman Jef fc oate at Liver pool University as a Research Fellow in Gynecology.

Despite his desire to pursue surger y, at various times in his life, Stewart Hunter was pointed to obstetrics and gynecology.

Stewar t Hunter was conscripted into the Royal Armed Forces and got a job as junior surgeon. His senior surgeon, which he knew from Liverp o o l U n i v e r s i t y, h e l p e d h i m g e t accredited as a specialist surgeon.

arrival, he learned that the position was already filled; however, there was a need for an obstetrician. With only three weeks of experience in obstetrics and gynecology, Stewart Hunter took on the role.

He was sent to one of the world’s busiest maternity hospitals, Kandang Kerbau Hospital in Singapore to gain more experience in the field. On his first day, he was directed to deliver a baby almost immediately upon entering the hospital, after hospital personnel saw his dog tags and learned he was a doctor. Stewar t Hunter delivered 10 babies that day.

“Every day it was the same,” Stewart Hunter said, “That was my introduction to obstetrics.”

Stewart Hunter became an appointed lecturer at the University of Malaya during his time in Singapore.

Stewar t Hunter travelled various p lac es prac t i c ing an d le c tur ing in obstetrics and gynecology, including England, Wales, Africa, and Australia. The most impactful place of pract i c e fo r S t ewa r t H u n t e r wa s E a s t Africa, where with a job at a maternity hospital came a house and a garden within the hospital. He notes that this

job was also very busy.

“I had done four emergency caesareans in one night,” he mentioned.

D r. S tewa r t H u n te r e n j oye d h i s time in East Africa, but felt the need to relocate due to political tensions and issues with violence. He arrived in Canada in 1968, where he worked for a short period of time at two locations before settling in Vermilion in approximately 1970. “ T h e p e o p l e i n Ve r m i l i o n w e r e welcoming and polite on the whole; a n d h e l p f u l,” c o m m e nte d S tewar t Hunter, “They seemed to care about each other.”

Stewart Hunter recalls flying from N o r t h e r n A l b e r t a t o Ed m o n t o n t o Vermilion, where much of his travel was cloud cover, but once he got to Vermilion, he got a clear view of the town.

“It was like magic!” he said.

He ponders the possibility of the clear skies being “a sign from above”.

“I’ve enjoyed my life, and I enjoy medicine,” Stewart Hunter concludes.

Stewart Hunter spent the last few years of his career working at Vermilion’s Hospital in the Long Term Care unit.

Celebrator y well wishes were shared with him at the Health Centre, but due to the present COVID pandemic, no community wide celebration was initiated.

University Of Manitoba Study Seeks Input From Albertan Farmers

Dr. Yvonne Lawley and PhD Student Callum Morrison of the University of Manitoba are amidst a three-year study to examine the effectiveness of cover-cropping in the Canadian prairies.

Despite studies on the subject being completed in the United States, Dr. Lawley and Morrison set out to gain representation and gather data as it may vary due to the differences between climate and soil conditions in Canada and the United States.

“We really need more local data,” explained Morrison.

Cover crops are crops grown in between the planting of cash crops to

reintroduce and enrich the soil with nutrients to improve the next cash crop. Cover crops are not popular in the Canadian prairies due to the lack of local data.

The purpose of the study and survey Lawley and Morrison are working on is to gather relevant, unbiased data to help Canadian farmers weigh the pros and cons of cover cropping. According to Morrison, the United States is 15 years ahead of Canadian farmers in cover crop adoption.

“It’s still a niche practice in the prairies,” according to Morrison.

Last year, Lawley and Morrison gathered responses from 211 farmers, however the representation in Alberta has been particularly limited in the survey.

“This year we’re really interested in hearing from farmers who’ve never grown cover crops,” said Morrison.

Along with the survey, Lawley and

Morrison also have field experiments in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, to observe differences in the consistent growing of cash crops and the practice of cover crops between cash crops. In these experimental sites, they study differences in nutrients, chemicals, and accessibility of water in the soil.

Data collected from the survey will be readily available for survey participants, and publically accessible on the Prairies Cover Crop Survey website.

“This is for the benefit of farmers, allowing them to have their voice, and allowing them to shape the future of cover cropping,” Morrison said.

The story of the Battleview School begins with the establishment of the Auburndale School District in November of 1907, with E.C. Symes serving as the chairman of the new district. As soon as the school district was created, it was decided that a school needed to be built. The school would be built on land that had been purchased for $12 for one acre, and the school would be built for $1,200 by J. Lipsey and Stan Harper.

In 1908, the school was closed for several reasons including teacher illness, cold weather and fire danger.

Resident families would pay the school taxes at a cost of five cents per

acre. This system was continued until the end of 1913 when the Municipality of Grizzly Bear took over collecting taxes.

The municipality would choose to work on grants, beginning in 1914, ranging in size from $600 to $1,000 per year. In 1913, money had also been borrowed from the Merchant’s Bank, but that loan was paid off in 1915. The government also provided a grant of $200 per year.

In 1917, it was decided to change the name of the district and the name became Battleview. Some items from that year that made it into the minutes of the school board include: “I make a motion that the teacher stay at the school house during noon and have the children bring fresh water every day and have the children take turns doing the sweeping, those that are large enough.”

In 1920, the school was the location for voting on a prohibition poll.

The school would continue to operate for several decades but by 1946, the school would close due to a lack of teachers and students and would remain closed until 1948. In that year, the school would reopen and stay open until 1954 when enrolment was again

falling. At that point, it was decided that the school should close and the students would attend Preston Central School. The school building itself would become the Preston Community Hall.

Lloydminster RCMP Recover Stolen Items After Search Warrant Executed

Lloydminster RCMP Submitted

Lloydminster, Alta. - As part of a crime reduction initiative that began in July 2020, a search warrant was executed on a Lloydminster property on Oct. 1, 2020 in relation to a property crime investigation.

As a re sul t of t h e inve st i g at i o n and executed warrant, Lloydminster RCMP with assistance from the RCMP Auto Theft Unit recovered a variety of stolen items with an estimated value of

$120,000. The items included: RV travel trailers, enclosed hauling trailers, ATV’s, a flat deck trailer, a firearm, and numerous other items deemed to be obtained by the commission of a crime.

Trevor Tessmer (41) of Lloydminster has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime (x14), altering vehicle identification numbers (x2), firearms offences (x4), uttering forged documents (x6) and possession of methamphetamine.

Tessmer was also wanted at the time of his arrest for failing to comply with conditions of a release document from a previous charge of theft. He was released after a judicial hearing and is set to appear in Lloydminster Provincial Court on Nov. 3, 2020.

Lloydminster RCMP will continue this crime reduction initiative to target those who victimize the citizens of our city.

The People Behind Canada’s Small Business Resurgence Af ter nearly 20 years of stagnation, entrepreneurial ac tivit y in C anada is making a comeback. In fact, more Canadians launched small businesses in 2018 than any other year in the previous dec ade. To f ind out more ab out the people leading this resurgence, the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) conducted two national surveys on entrepreneurship in 2018. Here’s what they found.

preneurs. Over the previous four years, the number of Canadians under 35 years old starting a business jumped by 80 per cent.

Four times more women are entrepreneurs now than they were 40 years ago, accounting for about 28 per cent of all Canadian small business owners. The growth in female entrepreneurship was about three times f as ter than that of male entrepreneurship.

Halloween 2020 During COVID-19

Every day on Facebook you see the eager adults wondering what Halloween will be like this year during COVID 19. They wonder about the regulations/ restrictions and even if Halloween will be going ahead! Well the good news is, Halloween will absolutely happen!!

Yay!!, as it is one of my favourite times of year.

I have decided to look things up and hopefully answer some of the questions for all of you. I jumped on the https://www. alberta.ca/halloween-during-covid19. aspx website and found a vast amount of information; they even have posters which you can print and place in your window or door to let the trick-or-treaters know whether or not you are participating.

So, according to the website here are some guidelines you can follow: If you are a Trick- or-Treater 1) Don’t go trick-or-treating if feeling ill, even if symptoms are minor.

2) Choose costumes that allow a nonmedical mask to be worn underneath - make sure you can see and breathe comfortably.

3) Minimize contact with others: trickor-treat with your family or cohort, remain within your community, and stay 2 metres apart.

4) Avoid touching doorbells or railings: call “trick or treat” from 2 metres away,

knock instead of using doorbells, use hand sanitizer after touching surfaces 5) Wash hands and disinfect packages before eating candy.

These all seem to me like a pretty reasonable way of helping everyone stay safe.

If you are Handing Out Candy you can follow these pretty simple guidelines: 1) Don’t hand out candy if you are feeling ill or isolating.

2) Wear a non-medical mask that fully covers your nose and mouth.

3) Ask trick-or-treaters to knock or call out instead of ringing the doorbell.

4) Use tongs to hand out pre-packaged candy to avoid handling treats.

5) Find creative ways to maintain distance from trick-or-treaters.

6) Set up a table or desk to help keep yourself distanced.

7) Make candy bags and space them out on a table or blanket; don’t leave out self-serve bowls of bulk candy.

8) Build a candy slide, candy catapult or other fun, non-touch delivery methods.

This one makes me wish I had kept my children’s catapults they had to build while they were in school. I think it would be fun!. Maybe we could all get slingshots!

If you want to hold a Halloween Party they suggest pretty much the same as they have for every other event we are allowed to hold.

Flèche Wallonne has a final circuit of three hard climbs and finishes on the to p of the famous Mur d e Huy (here is the information on the climb)- https://www.cyclinglocations. com /mur- de -huy- climb -belgium / it is a ver y hard climb, built for a specific type of rider who is a punchy c lim ber, we say pun c hy be c ause they are able to accelerate quickly on uphill sections. My main job was to m ove t he team into fir st p o s i tion coming into each of the climbs so they could attack over top. This

means that my job was to use my energy early so that my teammates could save energy for later in the race. We did a good job and our best rider finished 8th on top of the Mur de Huy. Due to a teammate getting sick, I was also asked to race in Sunday›s rac e Lieg e - Bastog ne - Lieg e - the oldest Monument one-race still on today for the men although only the 4th edition for the women. The day was windy, 30 -50kph winds, rainy and cold. We had 2 riders finish in the top 10. All races can be watched back on flobikes.com.

On September 30th, Spar tans of all ages participated in the Terry Fox Run. Students ran the loop with peers in their own grade. The Grade One students had a blast and even had time to stop to play at the end to celebrate all their hard work! On October 2, our school recognized Orange Shirt Day. Students read many stories about residential school survivors, such as Phyllis Webstad’s “The Orange Shirt Story”.

This book describes many of Phyllis’ experiences in residential school in Canada. Namely, the impact of having her brand-new orange shirt taken away on her first day of residential school.

What a tremendous learning opportunity for our young Spartans.

L ast week also marked the fir st Happigram celebration for elementary students. Not being able to gather for an assembly meant that things had to look a little bit different this year. Teach-

ers presented these awards to their students in front of their classes and sent videos and pictures to parents of the winners to showcase their achievements.

There will be no school for students on October 23 as teachers engage in important professional development and planning to ensure that we keep students safely learning.

This year’s AR total to date is 2124.8 points. The top readers for September were Josiah Williams at 38.6 points and Alli Crowe at 137.9 points. The 2/3 class and Grade 6A were the top reading classes this month.

Also at our virtual assembly, Mrs. Moses discussed our October virtue, which is compassion. We watched a video related to compassion. Mrs. Moses drew Caris Unland’s name as the September virtue winner. Caris received a wellness bag full of a number of items, such as pencils, a skipping rope, and healthy snacks.

In October, 2004, an FCC (Farm Credit Canada) employee hooked his tractor up to a flat-bed trailer and set out to collect donations for the local foodbank.

He spent eight days on the road and collected 60,000 pounds of food. This was the beginning of FCC’s Drive Away Hunger campaign. Because of his initiative, FCC has partnered with over 300

industry partners and over 400 schools annually to collect donations for the local food banks. In 2019 FCC collected over 16 million meals worth of food and since the program began, has collected over 50 million meals for the local food banks. The COVID-19 pandemic forced a pivot. They no longer can ask schools to collect food donations. Without this, and other food drives, we know our local food banks will be struggling. To compound

the problem, we are keenly aware of the struggles that many families and individuals in our community face. VES has done their part. We asked for students to bring a loonie to help support the Vermilion Food Bank. Students did this from October 5-7. Thanks to those who helped us support our local food bank.

Clayton Mack - THE MAN FROM BELLA COOLA

Submitted I only ever met Clayton MACK one time as I remember. It was many years ago at A.C. CHRISTENSEN & SON General Store. It was in the Old Store for sure and long before it burned down.

I wa s out at A nahim L ake v i s iting D’Arcy in the Store and D’Arcy introduces me to Clayton. I was very familiar with the man as he was a very highly respected Man from Bella Coola. Clayton asked me what relation I was to Slim BRECKNOCK and I replied that he is my eldest brother.

Clayton informs me that he and Slim are Best Friends. At the time I was still probably a very young member of the Mounted Police. It must have been late fall or early spring because that old 45 Gallon Barrel wood stove was really puttin’ out the BTU’s.

I do believe that Clay ton was an honorary member of the Safari Club out of California and was a guest of theirs on a trip to Africa one time.

I also believe he guided Ronald Reagan once and Fess Parker (Davey CROCKET T) and countless others.

He was “Mr. Grizzly Bear!”

Anyways… I was fortunate enough to visit with Clayton what seemed like for hours. He had soooo many stories to tell and I had a million questions.

We sat around the old wood stove and swapped stories ‘till one of us had to go hours later. I was so privileged that he took the time to BS with me and truly gave me an education on Bears, culture and his general experience in Bella Coola and the Anahim Lake area.

Clayton was one of the most famous Guides on the West Coast. Seems like every one of these “Old Timers” has some sort of “Schtick” they like to play on their hunters. Certainly Lester

DORSEY, Pan PHILLIPS ET AL were all known for one thing or another and each had their “Schtick”. Floyd elaborates on Lester’s somewhat in previous stories.

Clay ton was a ver y modest man.

Not prone to be flashy or in any way ostentatious. He was a “Man’s Man” to my way of thinking and I wish I could have gotten to know him better.

Clay ton told me of his “ Schtick ” he use to like to play on some of his hunters. Now most all his clients were wealthy and mostly American. They came up countr y with the ver y best of equipment, rifles and “ KNIVES”.

Clayton would take a bead on one or more of a Client’s knives and it was his “Schtick” to get that Client to give that knife to him.

Where and whenever a client bagged a big Bear (hell, any bear) Clayton would pull out what I would r efe r to a s a “ $1. 9 5 B a c o n k n i fe ” you might purchase at A.C. CHRISTENSEN & Sons. This would be a honkin’ big bladed thing all stained up with an old wooden handle on it riveted to the shank. An “ugly knife” to be sure.

Now the Hunter would be “aghast” that a famous Guide and man of “Renown Fame” would go about skinning out his Bear with a “Bacon Knife”.

Clayton would go into his “Schtick ” about how good a knife it was he was using and good enough and that it was the only knife he needed or even possessed. He had a complete repertoire that he had down pat. Almost without exception, Clayton would end up with the Client giving up his knife to Clayton and damn proud to be able to do it. Clayton informed me he had a whole trunk full of these knives down in Bella Coola. “Real expensive good looking knives too ya know.” He let out

Clayton use to always get my brother Slim a couple of Big Spring Salmon when the season was right and it would be the biggest salmon he could lay hands on out of Bella Coola. I do think Clayton did some Commercial Salmon Fishing on top of everything else he did. Usually something over 50 pounds or so. I remember one that I brought home one time, half a fish, from the anus back and it weighed about 30 pounds or more. That’s Big Salmon” Especially for the “Stubble Jumpers” around Vermilion, Alberta. My Fatherin-law took “Huge Pride” in taking this fish to the Packing plant and putting it into the “Freezer locker” or cut up into “salmon steaks”. He would show that fish to as many people he could and brag about his connections to Bella Coola and Clayton Mack.

Beat Costs And Boost Yields With Bale Grazing

M any Canadian producer s have taken steps to extend their grazing period and provide forage for cattle outside of confinement and away from corrals. Well planned extensive wintering systems have obvious benefits for reducing on-farm labour and yardage costs, but extended grazing also has environmental advantages for nutrient management and potential forage yield improvements.

Different methods of extended winter grazing may include annual forages for swath grazing, corn grazing, and grazing crop residue or cereals. Perennial forages can also be stockpiled for later grazing.

Bale gra zing is another metho d of extensive wintering that is proving popular with farmers. Cattle graze

bales on pastures and hay fields, typically through controlled access by electric fence. Bales can be purchased or grown on-farm and placed strategically in cells or “bale pods.” In some cases, cattle feed on bales directly where they are dropped from the baler but in most situations, bales are placed on preselected sites that need additional fertility or are located adjacent to stock water or natural or man-made shelter.

Producers typically set bales on their round sides, 35 to 40 feet apart, and remove twine or netwrap prior to allowing cattle access to the area. Some farmers try to source bales that are wrapped in sisal twine, which breaks down over time making follow-up twine management easy.

When producers place bales, they are importing nutrients onto a site not just from the forage itself but also from the

urine and manure of grazing cattle. This reduces manure handling and hauling costs and also allows farmers to target areas in need of soil improvements.

Any residual forage left ungrazed after cattle have moved to the next area isn’t a waste, but rather a source of nutrients for subsequent forage crops, litter to help increase water holding capacity and water infiltration of the soil, and a forage species seedbank.

T h e n u m b e r o f d ay s p r o d u c e r s choose to allow their cattle access to a pod of bales will depend on how many bales are placed, quality of the feed, body condition score of the c at tle, weather, and the far m e r ’s p e r s o n a l g o a l s a n d m a n ag e ment st yle. Some producers will move cattle ever y two to five days, while other producers will allow cattle access for 20 or 30 days of feed at a time, or even longer.

It’s important to feed test and weigh bales placed in grazing areas to ensure cattle have a relatively level plane of nutrition and avoid a “rumen roller coaster” caused by too much or too little feed. Producers may use hay, greenfeed, or even straw with supplementation, however feed testing is the key to ensuring a balanced ration is achieved and potential toxicity issues are avoided.

Bale grazing can improve perennial pastures and even be used to reduce brush encroachment; however, it is not

suited for all sites. Avoid placing bales on environmentally sensitive sites such as wetlands or creeks. Do not bale graze on native rangeland to prevent introduction of invasive or weedy species that can upset the balance of natural biodiversity or reduce the overall ecological integrity of a site.

Monitor snow conditions closely.

Snow should not be used as the sole water source for lactating cows, freshly weaned calves, or cattle with a body condition score of 2.5 or lower. A dwindling snow pack can cause animals’ stock water demands to spike, even when other water is available. Excess snow can cause cattle to expend extra energy to access feed, something that should be avoided for cattle groups that require higher levels of management such as calves, young cows, or thin cattle.

It’s always important to have a backup plan with any extensive wintering system and bale grazing is no different.

A prolonged harsh winter can increase the need for additional shelter and better-quality forage or supplementation for animals in any condition. Producers must manage and closely monitor cattle to ensure they stay healthy, remain in good body condition, and have access to forage that is of adequate quality, as well as access to water and shelter.

Producers are finding forage management success and cost savings by trying new methods of extensive wintering, but like any beef cattle production practice, bale grazing requires planning and management.
